Speaker 3We don't, I don't usually watch the Hall of Fame game. The only reason that I really turned it on, obviously Larry's going to the Hall of Fame and Carson Beck was starting, and so I wanted to see it. Right. Oh, we saw it. But the thing is, is regardless of whether you care about Carson Beck or the Cardinals or, you know, the Colts or the Panthers, whoever, if you watched it, it was a wildly fun game. Like, really fun, back and forth, crazy ending. It was like, it was good football. I mean, last second win.
Speaker 2Yeah. Final play of the game. Like a walk-off. I mean, you don't, you don't get that in football very often.
Speaker 3No, because this was like, and thank goodness, and of course, but it was, you know, they could have kicked a field goal. They could have pulled a tie at the end and go to overtime, which would have been like the play you would have done probably in regular season, but the, you know, you don't need more of the Hall of Fame game. So they just, it's like a timeless, that was, that was really fun.
Speaker 2It was great. It really was football. Carson Beck was awesome. I mean. That's what I hear. Four incompletions. Did you not watch it?
Speaker 5No, I was not able to watch it. Wow.

His full-time job is being a dad to a son who's in high school football. The mandatory meeting thing for parents. Right. They make it, they lay that on thick too. It's like, what are they going to do? Are they going to take your kid and kick them off the team if you don't show up? It's, it's. Where's his father?
Speaker 5It's funny to me. And I like, I understand all these. You got to be informed, but it's funny that, oh, the mandatory meeting. And then we have, um, we got to donate to the snack bar this weekend, but it's a mandatory donation. You get to donate? And I'm like, I don't think that word means what you think it means. I think what you're looking for is a fee. Yeah.
Speaker 3There's a mandatory fee. These clubs are out of control. It's not just sports. You know, my kids. We should start something. We really need to. My kids are in a theater where they're in an outreach. An outreach group. They have to pay to join the group. But then if you're in the group that you pay for, you must participate in all these donation events, which is like, wait, we're paying so that we have to pay more. What are we doing?

Speaker 3That was the number one tip because and this is a good there's a good piece of advice. They care if you were. I've never thought of this. If you were taking the tee out of the ground and putting it in your mouth, there's all sorts of eating chemicals. Yeah, but that wasn't what you were doing. Of course. Because you're not a monster.
Speaker 2No, I mean, this was a regular unused golf tee. Yeah, like. Like you're supposed to consume. And I realize the irony with my tooth problems.
Speaker 3Yeah, you chew on things that you shouldn't chew on. Also, you did just purchase. Maybe they're related. You literally, after this, purchased flavored golf tees. Ridiculous.
Speaker 2With dental grade plastic. Okay. They're safe to consume. But yeah, that that was as humbling. That's a weird idea. To do that. Yeah. It's because people chew on golf tees, whether they should or shouldn't. That happens enough to where there's now a market of me out there.

Speaker 2It's like you shouldn't. But if you do, there were some people that thought I was just lighten up. They thought I smoked.

Speaker 3Yeah, we do this for our listener league, which thank you all. We do this for our listener league, which thank you all. We do this for our listener league, which thank you all. We do this for our listener league, which thank you all. We do this for our listener league, which thank you all. And you get a morbid satisfaction out of it. I do. I really love that you can't truly fully prepare, but you can prepare. I mean, yeah, people get desperate though. They're like, Jason, come on, come on, tell us what I really want to do is like, I want to give them the order so that they prepare and then last second changes so that they prepared wrong. In fact, I'm doing that this year. Can I get agreement? Wait, what do you want to do? I want to tell you, I know, but they might not be listening to this episode right now. I know, but I'm saying if they're in the listener league, they better be listening. Yeah, that's true. They better be listening to all of them. I was saying I should set a draft order now and then completely change it right before the draft. But they'll know. If they're listening. That's, you know, it's a, it's an advantage. Here's, here's the answer to the question because the real trick is do the draft order and then surprise them like 30 seconds later, but don't tell them on this show. Well, sure. But I've already told them when you have a draft like this coming up, mock drafts are incredibly important. That's why we just did it. We just built a mock draft tool. What you do is you do a handful of drafts from the two, the seven and the 11, assuming it's a 12 person team. All you really need to know is what is it like at the beginning, the middle or the end of drafts? You don't have to know your exact draft spot. You just need to know, like when I'm near the back end of the first round, you know, and I'm, I'm near the, you know, the one, two and the three, four turn, what players, what positions really do I like? Like better or worse in the next time I'm on the clock. The next time I'm on the clock, that's pretty much all you have to do. I, I think that's how I would like to prepare.
Speaker 2Yeah. I mean, I think it's the essence of what we do in our rankings as well. It's the tier based drafting strategy puts you in a position where you are able to react to whatever happens just because you know, your draft spot. Okay. Maybe you can project your first round situation perfectly, or, you know, kind of where things are falling. You're. You're going to get surprised no matter whether you know it or not throughout the second, third, fourth, fifth round and beyond. We use tiers to define player groupings so that you can make decisions down the line. And when we did a mock draft show yesterday, there were oftentimes we're looking at the situation saying, look, I, you know, this is, this player is the final one of a group of relevant running backs I like, and there's still five or six wide receivers in that tier I like. So I'm going to move to the running back position. I think tier. base drafting is another key to that. And I agree with the mock draft analysis as well.

Speaker 2I mean, it is news that Carson Beck completed 14 of 18 passes. Two of the misses were drops. One was an intentional throwaway. He was excellent. And these weren't just, you know, dump offs. This was down the field. This was across the middle. It's relevant because we're all sitting here saying, you know, when is Mendoza going to play? When is Carson Beck going to take the field? How is this going to impact Bowers and McBride? If I'm the Arizona Cardinals, and their ex-GM even came out last night and said what we're all thinking, which is, you know you're going to be one of the worst teams in the league. The Cardinals are favored in zero games. So, okay, maybe you outkick your coverage a little bit and you win five. You win six because, what, they're projected for three and a half?
Speaker 3Is it three? I thought it was four and a half.
Speaker 2It might be four and a half. Ooh. I mean, this is...
Speaker 3Whoa, whoa, whoa, buddy. Oh, it is three and a half.
Speaker 2The point is, this is your goal this season. And this is where you've got a rookie head coach. You want to win games. Everybody wants to win games. You want to show your team that you're playing the best players. I get it. But your true agenda this year will be at some point to understand if you have anything in Carson Beck, who was the third quarterback drafted in the NFL draft. You will want to know if you need to use a high pick on a quarterback or not, which means, look, we'll see what the rest of the... Preseason looks like it's one game.
Speaker 3Let me ask you this.
Speaker 4But he started in Canton. He's ending in Canton, baby. Yeah.
Speaker 3Yeah. Max Hall also looked great in preseason once for the Cardinals. Let me ask you this. If this actually moves the needle of Carson Beck to start more games, which I believe it has or will, if you knew that Carson Beck was starting 75% of the season, or let's just say the entire season, you just said recently that you are Trey McBride over Brock Bauer. Would that flip it for you? Would that be a negative for Trey McBride that the rookie will start the whole season? Because he won't be as good as...
Speaker 2It would flip it for me. Yeah, because I just don't think the touchdown totals are going to be anywhere near what Jacoby Reset was able to do. And we just talked about McBride. One of the keys to his dominance was 11 touchdowns, double-digit touchdowns with a rookie I find to be somewhat unrealistic. Bauer still is going to have his challenges at some point in time, but at least it's the number one overall pick. It's exciting.
Speaker 5But it was the Hall of Fame game where this is an audition for guys who may not even get more chances in preseason. I love one of the...

Speaker 2The two should have gotten together and been like, all right. Whoever signs it first will split the difference between what I get above. Like a chop pot? Get them both done like a chop pot. Jalen Knoll coming off the NFI list. Jalen Knoll's got a pale climb. You've got Tank Dell and Jaden Higgins and Xavier Hutchinson. And yeah, Jalen Knoll's probably not going to be relevant.
Speaker 3Jaden Higgins has been getting a lot of positive buzz in camp. So it's a name to pay attention to with Christian Kirk gone. You're too wide receiver for the Texans.
Speaker 2I did watch this. We're talking about Alec Pierce and the return from left ankle surgery. I watched, like it's being reported that Shane Steichen says there's no timetable. I watched the press conference. It was, this is getting blown out of proportion in my opinion. Because all they did was say, is there any update to the timetable? And he said, no, no update. He's doing great. He's working out. He's doing a hell of a job in his rehab process. And you wouldn't even believe he said he's excited.
Speaker 3So then this is great reporting for you, Andy, because you you're in on Alec Pierce this year.
Speaker 2I mean, this is not great. I'd rather have him give a timetable that says tomorrow.
Speaker 3I'm saying great because this will push his ADP down. People will be more and more afraid. And if you're watching past the headline and you see that it's it's really no different than what we already knew was. That's how I'm interpreting.
Speaker 2And now I don't I don't like that. I mean, it's just a weird situation when you have. And we've had this before. I mean, Godwin Godwin is a perfect example of this. Godwin had a major injury, then signed a major contract extension and had to come back from injury. Alec Pierce, just to be under wasn't that good. Just so you understand, he was paid like eighty six million guaranteed. He's twenty seven, twenty eight million a year as a wide receiver. That is. And then they said goodbye, Michael Pittman. So that's their level. That's their level of belief. Now, they can't control outcomes of rehabbing and surgery and things like that or setbacks if those happen. All this to say it's August 7th. We are a month. We're more than a month away from the kickoff of the NFL season and even further from the Sunday in which the Colts play. I'm not going to panic today. But if in if in three weeks from now, Alec Pierce has not been running around at at training camp, I will then be worried. But I'm giving it a three week timer right now because he's the bona fide. Guaranteed number one of this wide receiver room.
Speaker 3Now, don't you think that if he gets back for the first time in three weeks that he will be starting slow?
Speaker 2I don't know. I don't know if he'll be starting slow because you're still going to have almost two weeks to get back into shape. We'll see. I mean, you don't mean you don't go two weeks. OK, I do. I do.

If you've been following what's going on with the training camp, because the offseason was was Kayshaun Booty, who was a very solid player for them. Deep threat last year. He felt like the odd man out like he was.
Speaker 2Well, I mean, he didn't just feel like it. He requested a trade. He continues.
Speaker 5He was he's asking for one now. He was not showing up to some some voluntary stuff. And the talks of a trade. But all the reporting is like Kayshaun Booty is is one of the best wide receivers. There's for the Patriots this entire training camp process. So it's like who who is actually going to be playing for this?
Speaker 2Because you're a Mario Douglas is going to get a lot of snaps because digs with short area targets.
Speaker 5That's the question playing because you have A.J. Brown's a lock. Romeo Dobbs would be insane if you gave him that amount of money and then he's not your two. So then it's the three. Well, then. But should you put are you putting Dobbs in the slot then and putting booty on the outside? Where? Because you have Douglas, who is a great slot. Booty's requested a trade, right? And because he feels like he doesn't have a real opportunity.
Speaker 3A lot of people have assumed he would be traded. I'm surprised he's still a Patriot. Maybe they're waiting for for a higher price. But there's there's some teams out there that could you telling me the Chiefs aren't better with booty? Sure. But yeah, well, we're all better with booty.

We'll be right back. wide receivers it should be said in the in the context of the alec pierce news with a team that's lost michael pittman you know jason's already talked a lot about tyler warren but if alec pierce is limited if it takes some time to get going it's all the more reason to spend an early pick on josh downs and give him a shot because somebody has to catch the ball there he's going to get more opportunities whether he's going to be good enough on the outside is tbd but he he's still going to be on the field and behind him it's ashton doolin which has been the case for a while which you know that's part of the reason i'm not sure about downs being great on the outside it's like why weren't you taking snaps from him before but you had pittman in the slot so yeah um wide receiver rankings countdown let's do it here's some numbers for you what makes a wide receiver we're looking at 20 through 11 today over the last decade among 110 wide receivers finishing in this range 84 percent of them average seven or more targets per game so i mean seven or more is big number 77 percent had a thousand or more receiving yards and 75 percent had six or more receiving touchdowns and when did we switch to 17 games by the way i can we officially remember that day uh no we cannot officially
Speaker 3remember that date okay no one uh but in a 17 game season seven targets a game would be 119 targets 2021 okay so we've had half a decade this is i just think it's
Speaker 2funny when you're like 77 percent of had a thousand or more receiving yards but you got an extra game for half of them so an extra opportunity to do it those thresholds nobody's adjusted properly yeah but numbers are 18 are you just going to keep saying he's a thousand
Speaker 5yard receiver sure we have two bonus games but also production has been down we've talked about
Speaker 2that globally uh t higgins comes in at number 20 guys that feels like a real floor situation for t higgins and we all have them ranked there i think just because we like the upside of a lot of other players i mean a classic situation jason you and i have them higher than mike
Speaker 3yeah look we we love t higgins here yeah is being drafted as the wide receiver 14 that's fine you've why are we all below release me why are we all below adp i think the reason we're below adp is because where t higgins scores his fantasy points and in recent memory is like he was on pace for 12 and a half touchdowns and he can absolutely 100 replicate that but we can't project him right for 12 and a half touchdowns so like i have him projected for nine touchdowns which i have him at 8.2 yeah and so when you do that when you project kind of a good median outcome it's going to it's going to hurt him um whenever there's a guy who is really touchdown heavy on where the fantasy points come from they'll usually be a little lower in like
Speaker 2linear rankings 21 receiving touchdowns over the last two years yeah only chase on monroe and adams have more than that wow um it's just touchdowns aren't a sticky stat i mean but they are for a a few a few people you always have an injury concern with t higgins no question it's been a problem anytime a player has a narrative that involves him running up a hill at practice you know injuries have been part of his story yeah i mean this is also when i look actual
Speaker 3yeah when i look at last year i'm like thank goodness we finally got a full season out of t higgins he still missed two games and was injured but it feels great like that's a full season that's a full season 15 games is a full season for t higgins if you tell me t higgins gets a thousand yards i'll be like wow yeah because per game in 12 games he got a thousand um they i mean they're
Speaker 2in some of the highest over under games of the season i mean the the bangles average i think line is like 49 yes so again this is this comes down to there's two factors for t higgins one is that his quarterback's healthy and that's not always been the case and the other is that higgins is healthy and that's not always been the case if both of those are true the way they pass the football i i mean t
Speaker 3higgins is is really this is the floor for him this is the floor as far as our ranking of 20 he's being drafted a wide receiver 14 i don't have any problem with that take your shots on

Speaker 5who in his career we're going into year four so as a rookie just under 29 uh 2900 passing yards at five and a half yards per attempt the next year 2400 at 6.3 this past year his best season just barely passes 3 000 yards at 6.3 yards per attempt and 23 passing touchdowns last year was 25 of the targets he has to jump to 30 plus yeah he needs to be at 30 if you're getting 25 again of bryce young But a big jump for Bryce Young with the numbers that he's put up so far would be 3,500 yards, which is – like that's not a – That's potentially 1,500 fewer than Burrow with T. Higgins. Right. But if Bryce Young gets to 3,500 and McMillan makes a jump to 30%, which is not impossible based on the talent of the player, then you'll be happy. It's just a big step has to happen for both players.
Speaker 2He's a great player, but he may be stuck a little bit. Bryce Young, 34th in average depth of target, 34th. And in seven games, Tett was three or fewer receptions. So if you combine that kind of an output at low depth of target, that would be scary.

It's just a question of would you rather have the second wide receiver for the Cowboys, for the Bengals, for great offenses, that you know there's just going to be so much points being scored, or would you rather have the number one for an inferior offense? Speaker 2He's finished as wide receiver 10 in 2022. I mean, he feels like an obvious easy pick. And this again, feels like a floor pick in terms of like the worst he's going to finish. I would say if Makai Lemon wasn't dealing with hamstring injuries again, maybe Makai Lemon excitement heading towards the season could keep his ADP in place. I think that the trouble is, is that in this top 20 range, there are a lot of names that are kind of exciting. And we've been around the block with Devante Smith a little bit. There's pessimism around the offense. I'm just trying to think of narratives that could keep him lower. But to me, it seems like one of those things where you, you might, if you pass on him here or you pass on him even a little bit higher, you may just really, really regret it. Cause it might be really obvious about six weeks into the year that this guy is a bona fide wide receiver one in fantasy. I think it is worth. And they're favored in the four of their first six.
Speaker 3Yeah. I think it's worth saying Devante Smith because he's, he has been a wide receiver two in the NFL for his own team, but Devante Smith is fully 100%. Without question in my mind, capable of being an alpha wide receiver one for an NFL team. He is an elite wide receiver. He came in as one of the best prospects ever. If he was just, if he weighed a few more pounds, you know, he was a little too light coming into the NFL, but when he came in, he was one of the best prospects. Statistically. He just was 170 pounds. You don't, that doesn't usually work, but he is so good as an actual wide receiver that, but he's overcome that. And I don't think that there's any fear there personally with whether he can step from the wide receiver to roll to the wide receiver one.
Speaker 2The Eagles have done a really good job of just taking people. Other teams have talked themselves out of for dumb reasons with Jalen Carter. Now the highest paid defensive player in football or whatever. And, and Devante Smith, they just get the Heisman winner. You know?

Speaker 2Well, he's only at 14 over the last three years. And you've heard my, my bear case on Zay flowers before. There are, there are lots of games and this is kind of a Baltimore thing. Yeah. You put that bear to hibernation. Um, there are, there are a lot, a lot of games where, um, where they've not needed him. I mean, this has been part of the, the career of Zay flowers. He, if for whatever reason, there are games that Zay flowers looks dominant and for, and then there are games where, I mean, you had games last year, two for 13. Okay. That's the wide receiver. 89, two for six on 95% of snaps. Like, so there's some elements to the, the game for Zay flowers where he's just at times disappeared over the years. Same thing happened the year before. And it was, it was really frustrating because you basically ping pong between disappearing acts, three points, 1.15, 17, three points, 15, 27, five points. It's not been as consistent for Zay flowers as other players, but last year it was a step up in his points per game. He played all 17 games. He's been very healthy. Something you can't say about T Higgins. Um, I, I do have my questions about, I feel like Lamar, the Lamar situation is basically, does he gel with the head coach and the offensive coordinator? And it seems like, it seems like it's been hard for certain people to connect with him and get him motivated. The reports right now are that he is, but that was lost at times with hardball.
Speaker 3Yeah. This was the undersized wide receiver that I remembered finished as wide receiver seven, which was last year. Right. Um, flowers. One of the stickiest, most predictive stats at wide receiver for future success is simply target share. Yup. That actually sticks around and has a high correlation with being good the following season. His target share in his career has gone up. Each of his three seasons started at a very healthy 24, then 25 last year, 29%.
Speaker 2What about the $104 million they gave him this off season? How does that, what does that say to his target? It's amazing.
Speaker 3If they lock flowers was a guy who was used around the red zone and was a touchdown threat, this would be a guy easily in the second round of fantasy drafts because, you know, he's on a good offense. He's the clear cut one with a high enough, target share. The touchdowns are really, really holding them back. Now you don't project. I mean, Mike does Mike projects, you know, 6.7 touchdowns might be a record. You don't, that would be his record. I'm sure without looking that up on positive, that would be his record. You, you don't project him to have a ton of touchdowns. And I think could he have an outlier season? Sure. But that would be low odds. However, this is an archetype that is usually a really good fantasy football odds. Bet, bet on a guy who's, a target volume is great on a great offense and touchdowns. It's only gone up touchdowns. They bounce around. You, you, they, they, they have, if, if he ends up with seven touchdowns next year, he'll be probably a wide receiver one. And he's not being, he's being drafted pretty late. So I, I like taking a shot on Zay.
Speaker 5Zay flowers. Number one, the talent. He's awesome. If this is a new offense. So I don't know what the, I think that that's what provides, some excitement of, you know, we can look back historically over the first three years, five, four and five touchdowns. This is different. You know, it, there is a, there is an opportunity. There's a chance that Zay flowers scores more touchdown. And this is like,

Speaker 5This is a, a, a, a, of a stretch, but it's just to prove my point. Remember when Trey McBride couldn't catch touchdowns. Yep. Three touchdowns. Remember when Kittle couldn't? Sophomore year, two touchdowns. The year after that, 11. I'm not saying 11 touchdowns are coming for Zay flowers, but it's when, when, when a variable changes, which one changed for Trey McBride last year, the Jacoby came in. This is a different offense for Lamar. And I, he's just a little, yeah, just a little guy. Yeah. But he, he plays, he plays big.
Speaker 2All right. Jalen Waddle comes in at 16. We've talked extensively about Waddle recently. He was on the Monday episode. He was Mike's fire pick. It is, you know, it's hard for me to believe be fully bought in on jaylen waddle as much as i'd like to be simply because it's been a struggle fantasy wise over the last three seasons for jaylen waddle i don't think on a per play basis when you're watching him you're like oh that guy doesn't have the same you know juice the same wiggle but the fantasy production has been slowed and it's not like we didn't have confidence in his offensive coordinator the last three years so part of it's been slowed by his injury situation which is daily yeah as you say it's not a great thing that when we bring him up on the show he's already hurt um it's not a great thing that the only way that you give good numbers for jaylen waddle is to be like when he was healthy and when tua was healthy and when this happens and that happens
