Fall Reset! How to Get Organized, Set End-of-Year Goals & Embrace the Cozy Season

The transcript combines a promotional message for Ernesto’s custom rugs with a deeply personal podcast episode focused on intentional living during the transition to fall. The host reflects on her summer slowdown and sets clear goals for autumn: efficiency, organization, and productivity, which guide her daily habits like consistent morning routines, increased fitness training, and a structured reading plan. She emphasizes creating a cozy home environment through decluttering, seasonal decor, and candle lighting, while also advocating for self-care, mental health, and meaningful social connections through small gatherings. Specific recommendations include reading three targeted books, planning holidays early to reduce stress, and upgrading fitness routines to three times a week. The episode also highlights benefits of mindfulness, therapy, and holistic health tracking, framing seasonal shifts as opportunities for personal growth. Ultimately, the message centers on self-love, intentionality, and aligning one’s lifestyle with natural rhythms—offering listeners actionable, grounded strategies to feel centered, present, and fulfilled as the year winds down.

It's your host Victoria Garrick Brown, and this is the podcast where we hold nothing back. Oh, so we're getting deer, huh? I've really cried for 12 days straight. Why do I want to be perfect? There's nothing in my life that is perfect. Every week I'll bring you honest, unfiltered, and eye-opening conversations to help uncover the real in all of us. I crave the type of content that you're talking about. I actually felt insecure. Oh my god, am I going to cry? Let me just unload everything. New episodes every Wednesday leave those filters at the door, because it's time to get real. Hello, everybody, and welcome back to RealPod. I hope that this episode is finding you well. I am feeling centered, but a little scattered, so I wanted to start this episode with a big deep breath. After all, we are going to be resetting for the fall, transitioning from summer to the new season in this episode together. So I thought, why not? If I was going to take a deep breath, why not press record, and we all do it together? So, here we go. We're going to breathe in, hold at the top, and then let it out, to breathe in through your nose, out through your mouth. One, two, three, relaxing my shoulders, unlocking my hands, and I'm going to do one more breath. Always feels good to take a breath, to take a moment, to slow down. We can all take one moment, one breath, and feel resentered. And that's sort of the perfect warm up for today's episode, because this weekend is September. We are into the fall, transitioning from summer. I know a lot of people are probably sad about that, but it's okay. You know, we lived it. It was great. I posted on Instagram and was like, who else is super excited for fall? And people were like not happy with it, especially my like East coasters, which I get it. You actually have the seasons change over here in California. We sort of just get to like, cosplay the seasons and kind of wear the sweaters and drink the spice lattes, but the sun still shines. So it's not fair. But you know, I sympathize. I still think it's fun to like be in the snow and have the winter season. But of course, once again, just for like a quick trip, but not my whole month, you know what I mean? But hey, that's why I live in California. That's why I live in California. And that's why I pay the insane California taxes for the sunshine, either way, the fall is here. So it's always important to align with what's around us, with the changes and find ways to make it work for us. I've had so many thoughts recently about how I want to approach the fall and the changes I'm going to make. Not a ton of changes, but the little adjustments and the priorities I want to have and the goals I want to get accomplished before the year ends. And so I thought, why not sit down and record a reset with me for fall, real part episode, share what I'm doing with you guys and also provide you with some takeaways, prompts, thought starters so that you can also make the most of your fall as well. So without further ado, shall we dive in? I think so. Let's start with intentions. I decided that I wanted to set some intentions for the fall. Children are pretty tied to work because that is a big priority for me this fall. Yours could be different. But when I thought about the fall, what came to mind was efficient, organized and productive. Those are the three things I want to embody and I want to feel this fall. I think a lot of that stems from having a slower summer. My summer was slow, work was a bit slower. I didn't have as much work travel. I felt like I got to have a lot of play, which was fun. We went to a wedding in Paris. We did so many fun things with our friends. I was able to kind of sleep in later on most days. My wake-up schedule wasn't always the same. And it just felt like I was moving the needle, getting things done, but I know that I have many speeds I can operate at and I was nowhere near my max. If I think of myself like an orange, I don't think I was squeezing out all my juice every single day. And I don't want to squeeze out all my juice every single day and then be totally burned out. So I think for me, it's almost like my pendulum swung so far back into this chill, relaxed, slow your life down state. And now I'm trying to find my happy medium where I actually feel good and it's sustainable. I know we've had lots of conversations on real plot about how I felt like very busy and overwhelmed and stressed and how I kind of undiddle of that. And now I'm realizing I need to find that, yeah, that happy medium because I also don't feel like my best self when my whole life is slower. I think it was necessary to give me a clear mind to think about what I really wanted. And now I'm going to mindfully and intentionally put the pieces together in the way that I want. So as I think about work, I definitely want to be starting work the same time every single morning. If I'm done with my tasks instead of being like, yay, I'm done early. I want to see is there something else that I can do? Just to keep optimizing and to keep growing and feeling creative. So intentions help give you direction before the busyness and the chaos starts pulling you all over the place. I'd like to prompt you to think about what does finishing the year strong look like for you in your life and encourage you to write down your three words that you want to define your fall. And then we can let those words guide us for what we're saying yes to what we're saying no to and also how we're curating our every single day. I mentioned that I wasn't always waking up at the same time. I think for me, if my goal is these words, efficient, organized, productive, that means I want to be waking up at a sharp time every single morning of the week. So my intention words are helping form and shape my habits for the next few months. And with that, I have some personal goals to kind of help my brain start sparking and firing and getting that creativity and that motivation back. And I know that what's going to help me do that is reading. There's two books I've been dying to read that I've heard amazing things about. The first one is called The Slight Edge by Jeff Olsen. Lauren Bostic has talked about this book for so many years. I think it's one of her like must read top books of all time. It's called The Slight Edge. And so I'm finally just going to dive into that. I've always had it on my list. And I feel like that book, that book title is giving me like, you're going to be reading something about how to like optimize your life and your business, which is the energy I want. And along with that, Emmanuel Aucho, who's been on real pot of friend of mine, told me that he just read the hidden habits of a genius by Craig Wright and that it was awesome and it already gave him like all this new juice to think about some exciting idea he's working on. And I was like, yes, that is the energy that I need. So I'm also going to read the hidden habits of a genius. And then on the side, I'm still reading a fiction novel because those are always fun and you just kind of lose yourself in the story. And I'm currently reading The Women. I think it's by Kristen Hannah. It's about the untold stories of the heroic female nurses in the Vietnam War. And I know that that sounds very heavy and intense and that's also why I didn't read the book for such a long time. But it's actually not, I mean, it is, but it's also like a story and it's not real, it's based on real things, but you lose yourself in it the same way you enjoy another fiction read. So I'm excited to kind of have these two books that are more serious. I can pick up when the sun's up, when I'm feeling motivated on a lunch break during the early hours after work. And then I have the women that I'll read kind of at night to help me fall asleep and when I want to kind of like let my brain turn off. So those are the three that I'm reading. Maybe you could choose a book you've been meaning to read and make your fall project, whether you have three books you want to set your sights on or you want to just choose one book. I've adopted the habit of reading this past year and it's been amazing. I love it. It just gives you another hobby, something fun to do that's not scrolling on your phone who are watching TV. I highly recommend it. I love my Kindle. I read with the Kindle paperweight. I've linked it on Amazon. You can just snuggle up. You don't need the lights on. You can turn it on orange light. You can adjust the font. Anytime you want to book, you just download it on the Kindle and it's there to read instantly. It's so easy to travel with. Read by the pool. Read on the couch. I love it. I'm always demanding max to bring you my Kindle because it's always all around the house because I bring it with me wherever I go. But let me encourage you to maybe try to read this fall. I also think that reading goes perfectly with the season because fall is all about the leaves changing on the trees. It's getting a little colder, a little windier. We're going to get those pumpkin spice lattes. We're gearing up for winter. You're just like entering a little bit of a hibernation mode and you're going back into your cave into your home. And I feel like snuggling up with a book just really emulates that vibe. And so that's why I wanted to have three books lined up that I can grab as it gets a little bit more chilly. One of my favorite, favorite places to shop for bedding, towels, pajamas. Pretty much anything I need to keep me cozy and comfortable at home is cozy Earth. It's made from visco from bamboo and they naturally wick away heat and moisture from your body, helping you sleep several degrees cooler. Cozy Earth makes that possible. People will talk about hibernation and how animals all around the world prepare for hibernation, and then they hibernate in winter. And there are obviously similarities between them and us. And as humans, we are also animals. And I think it's important to be in touch with our surroundings and our environment. And if so much of our world is changing around us naturally, I believe that should inform changes for ourselves as well. I was listening to my friend Mary Skinner talk about this on her podcast prologues. And she said that if you think about it, we can just like avoid and ignore all signs from nature in terms of like what we're supposed to be doing to rehabilitate our bodies. So for example, if there was no electricity and it got dark, we would simply have to turn off. We would simply like have to go to bed. But now we're able to just turn our lights on, open our computer and keep simulating this daytime energy. That's not like really what our bodies are supposed to be doing. And I think there's a lot of truth to that. Like when the sun's down, we should be winding down when the sun's up. We should be winding up. It's like our circadian rhythm. And so I'm also making sure that as we approach fall, or I guess we're kind of in and now, setting myself up for success in that area. So I've been really mindful this past month of August to like make sure my home is feeling clean. And then I'm organized. And I've been decluttering. I know it sounds like you guys probably like this girl is always talking about decluttering. Like are you actually decluttering if you're decluttering again two months later? I hate to make excuses. But in this job, the influx of material items that you're receiving, whether it's just because you're getting a gift or it's because you're filming with something or you need items for a certain work thing. Like the consumerism is insane. And I was talking about this with Aubrey the other day. I was like, honestly, sometimes it's just like, like it's just, it's too much. But it's part of this job. And so I have to figure out how to make it work for me. And I feel like I'm finally at a place where I'm like back on top of like not having extra things in the house that I don't need being really good about like giving away things, gifting them. I just sent one of the VGB VIPs a huge box of extra PR. She's going on like three bachelorets. And I saw a message from her and I was like here and I sent her this giant box of things that she can scatter for all of her friends. So it's been nice to just like prepare for hibernation by creating a space that I really want to be in and be cozy in where I can like also be my best self in. I think it's hard to if I think about my intentions. I want to be productive and I want to get shit done. It's hard to do that when you wake up and you have clothes all over the floor. When you walk into your office or your home desk and there's paper everywhere. Like you see visually and you feel that there's other impending tasks. So you can't be 100% focused on what you actually want to focus on. So when your space feels clear, your mind follows. You don't have to do a full deep clean if that feels overwhelming. But maybe you could start with one drawer or one pile. All of those small wins will compound quickly. And then you'll feel that peace in your space. And like when you see all those memes about getting cozy this fall, you're not actually resenting it because you're like, wait, yes, I love my bed or my couch or my little place that I live and it feels clean. In addition to that, I think it's fun when the seasons change to make some adjustments and switch out some of my spring decor to bring in some warmer, cozy or things. I love lighting candles every single night. I'm a big believer in at nighttime, not having the overhead light, especially in fall. It's so the vibe. If you have a fireplace and you need a fire going, but really making sure that as it gets to six o'clock, six 30, you're really turning your lights off and you're lighting candles and you can get scented candles and really start to smell that pumpkin spice, that alpine, that winter wonderland, and really get like fully immersed. I think seasonal cues also help to reset our mindset. So surrounding yourself with those sensed textures and colors that match the season, make the transition feel really exciting instead of rushed. And I love the holiday season. I love Halloween Thanksgiving Christmas, so I think to help those things feel like they've slowed down, it's really having little bits of it every single day. So maybe you could swap out just one thing in your home for something seasonal. It could be just bringing in like an orange throw blanket. I did that last season and it was so fun. A candle scent, you could just be adjusting the coffee you make at home, adding some cinnamon or some nutmeg to the top and really allowing yourself and your space to see a reset as well while we are mentally and emotional. actually resetting at the same time. Speaking of our mentors and our self-care, I have been wanting to give you guys an update on my current workout routine because I know we've talked about that here and there throughout the months on RealPod. And I feel like I'm in a really awesome rhythm. I've been strength training twice a week at a gym called Alleggett. And it's been amazing. I've been working with a personal trainer. I just got to a place where I was like, you know what? I'm jumping around from all these different classes and I feel like I'm not giving myself the like specific time and attention that I want. And I feel really grateful to be in a position where I get afford to do that. And I was like, you know what? If I can do this, why would I not? And so I signed up for personal training. And it's been just over two months of strength training twice a week. So I've been doing pretty like heavy lifts. I feel like I don't leave the sessions feeling like my heart's pounding and I'm like dripping in sweat. Like I would if I was leaving a workout class. But I'm definitely leaving feeling like my joints, my muscles, my posture, like everything is being really strengthened and loved. And it's like, I think you could put my body in like any sort of position right now. Actually speaking of, number a few weeks ago, when I did the Nicki Minaj challenge and I was leg crossed on a Pittsburgh football helmet on top of a desk, I swear to you, I would not have been able to do that pose or hold that balance if I hadn't been doing the strength training. So I've already felt like a huge difference. Now as we head into the fall, I'm going to make like some small upgrades to my fitness routine to kind of raise the bar for myself and also, yeah, get into this fall mindset. Right now I said it's been twice a week and it's been a little bit later in the morning like 9,930. And that's worked for me in the summer. But I know that that's not what I want for myself in the fall. Like I want to be showered dressed ready and in front of my computer, like consistently at 9. And when you're self employed, it's just like, it's easy to like work later into the night. I work pretty much every single weekend. So in my mind this summer, I've been like, you know what, it's okay, twice a week, I'm just going to like start the day late. And that actually was today, I lifted at 930. And it's like, I just feel like the day leaves me so quickly and I'm not as productive in my outputs on as high as I want it to be. So as we go to the fall, my reset is going to be upgrading to three times a week. So I'm going from two to three times a week with my lifting and training. And I'm also going to be adjusting my time. I think I want to do seven a.m. starts so that I can come home, be showered dressed ready and sharp by nine o'clock. So my little takeaway for this is just, they're one small upgrade you can make to your own fitness routine this fall. You don't have to start a whole plan. It doesn't have to be extreme, but is there one thing you can do to just like raise that bar for yourself as well? And I think you'll feel really good about it, especially as we head into the new year. Oh my god, I didn't want to talk about the new year because that feels crazy and it feels so far away, but it's like not that far away. But I think there's still time right now to be moving your body and working on any of your goals. And I'm excited to be kind of like adding a new challenge of waking up earlier and adding an extra lift and doing that just because I want to do it. And I know I'm at a place where it feels right for me and not because it's like the new year. And I feel forced to do it. In my recent solo episode, I talked about how I am making some upgrades to my fitness routine this fall to keep pushing myself, reaching new goals and keeping my body moving. And the more women move, the better we feel. We feel more confident, less stressed, more like ourselves. Yet women face significantly more barriers to exercise than men as revealed in the ASICS move her mind study. Now ASICS is on a simple mission to get more women moving. Move your body, move your mind with ASICS. And ASICS has so many cute styles of shoes, whether you're running, walking, doing errands. I actually think my very first pair of volleyball shoes ever in 7th or 6th grade might have been ASICS. My volleyball players know the classic ASICS volleyball shoe, they're iconic. But whether it's a walk, a stretch, or a moment of stillness, movement becomes a tool to feel more grounded and more connected, and ASICS is investing in the science of mental wellbeing. It doesn't take hours in the gym to feel the benefits. The move her mind study by ASICS shows that just 15 minutes of movement can make a meaningful difference in mood. And ASICS is helping people redefine movement as something small, joyful, and attainable, like a walk, dance break, or a stretch, especially for women balancing busy lives. Another personal goal that I have for myself this fall is to really curate some more cute aesthetic and like emotionally fun gatherings. I mean, the easy way to say that is just I want to host more. I've set the goal for myself of hosting three dinner parties and it doesn't have to be like big every single time. I think if I just had like two girlfriends over and I set the table and like made dinner or made appetizers or something, it just feels so fun to like enjoy my apartment. And like I said, light the candles. Invite people in to be warm and cozy and have great conversation and a great glass of wine and just like see deeper into the fall. Last year I did one dinner party and it was the witchy evening I hosted with my friend Michelle and that was super fun and I could see us wanting to do something else like Halloween themed or maybe we do the witch dinner 2.0. But I definitely think in addition to that, I want to have like two other nights where whether it's smaller or bigger, I just have people over and I set a table. I think there's something so traditional, familiar, warm and just like it's just like a lost art like hosting and setting a beautiful table and like going to home goods and getting a cute little Thanksgiving themed napkin or a little pumpkin candle to put in the center of the table or like an orange place setting. It's just kind of fun to do that stuff. It makes your night and like the hangout feel purposeful. And I think when you also put a lot of tenderloven care into an environment and an atmosphere, I think that people really follow that. That's actually a thought I've never really set out loud but it's so true. When you walk into a place or a friend's house and they've invited you over for dinner or drinks and like you can see that they've put thought and care into curating the environment for you to hang out. You just like sink into that, your shoulder's fall, you start to talk, you laugh, you really enjoy the night and you're very present. You're not thinking about the next thing. So my goal is three dinner parties this fall. Maybe your goal or challenge. is also three or it's just hosting one gathering or if you don't feel like you can host where you live, maybe it's just going to get a coffee and a dessert and going to coffee with your friends and I don't know bringing everyone a little bag of like candy corn or a little pumpkin chocolates or something and just feeling like you made the lunch with your girlfriends a little bit extra special. But I definitely want to be like leaning more into that and I think a big part of it as well is when max leaves for college football season his first game he's calling this weekend so everybody tune in it's the UVA football game. I forget who they're playing but it's going to be on ACC network he's calling games this year for ESPN anyways enough about max back to me and back to us resetting for the fall. Max leaves every weekend so yeah girl is all alone and I think for me to like fill the space hosting and really connecting with my friends and trying to keep fostering deeper relationships is a huge part of that so max leaving has inspired me to be more intentional with my friendships and hosting speaking of gatherings shall we talk about the holidays and family. As much as for a lot of people I think it can be like I don't want to think about it yet or the stress or the pressure or I think there's a lot of people who love it love being around their family I definitely love the holiday season of course there are difficult aspects to it as there are for everybody. But something that's helped me reset for the fall and feel prepared is planning ahead planning ahead takes so much stress out of the season if you wait until December things get booked up prices spike. You're probably left scrambling it just like adds a little bit of chaos so this year max and I were really forward thinking about what we want to do for the holidays you know we booked a new years trip with Aubrey and wood that we're so excited to take I feel like the new years. We've new years day we stumbles around and it's like what are people doing there's nothing really going on and we've had that I think the past two years and so this year I was like you know what I want to know where we're going I want to really enjoy it and I want it to be awesome and so Aubrey and I were like let's just let a couple of strips so I'm really excited about that. And then as far as like Christmas and Thanksgiving we have already figured out where we're going to be who we're going to be with it wasn't super seamless there's lots of conversations navigating all the family dynamics making sure. To the best of your ability that everyone's happy but I feel grateful that we like had these conversations and we got ahead of it I'm also a planner like I just want to hop on the phone. I want to text and say what's the deal what's the vibe let's figure this out so I can know what the plan is it just like helps my brain so maybe this week if you have yet to get to this you could just choose like one holiday task and check it off early whether it's booking a trip making a gift list deciding on holiday plans I think just the future version of you will be so thankful that you kind of made those choices and I think when making these choices we don't want to rush through them because. Gosh the worst is when you just say oh yeah I want to do this and then you get there and you're like why did I not think this through like I've been on the road for two weeks or I've been I don't like where we're staying or I it's too much socializing and I wish we only came for three days and not six you know whatever it is I think take the time to slow down and really visualize where you're going to be in with who and what you want. Speaking of I feel like I've kind of totally skipped over Halloween which is coming up I don't know what I'm going to be this year I have no idea I've saw I've seen some tiktok said people planning their costumes which does feel like it's happening way too fast if you go to the CVS like there are already spooky things or the spooky aisle I think now that we're going to be in September it's okay I'm fine with it it felt a little premature in August but. Save to say a lot of people have their Halloween costumes figured out I have no idea what I want to dress as this year so I thought I get thinking on that but I'm not stressed I feel like I always decide what I want to be for Halloween I either know like six months prior I see something and I have an idea and I'm like this is what I'm doing or I wait and wait and wait and then I decide like two weeks before and figured out on a whim but it's fun Max I always love going hard and dressing up for Halloween. Okay that was a majority of my thoughts as we approach fall I just want to give you a little recap so that leaving this episode you feel organized and clear and like you have some inspiration for your reset. We talked about the seasonal mindset shift things are getting a bit slower cozier more introspective so we're going to make sure that we have a really welcoming peaceful space around us an environment where we can kind of flourish right now and feel like our best selves I'm adjusting some of my habits I'm going to wake up earlier have a more consistent morning routine I'm going to be working out more and earlier so I think setting some small attainable goals for yourself for the next. Three months will really help you feel centered this holiday season and accomplished as we wrap out the year we talked about updating your home or workspace for the season warm lighting cozy blankets. Ascented candle and reading I will be doing a lot of reading and cozying up and I think reading helps us just stay in our own energy as well we're not consuming from the world on social media we're just. In our own thoughts getting lost in a story or being inspired by someone we also did an emotional and sort of goal setting check in by setting intentions for the fall I was able to reflect on my summer what worked what didn't work and where I want to be at and how I want to feel. So I set my three intention words efficient organizing productive I'd actually love to hear your words so maybe on today's episode post you could comment them for me and I'll comment back and then lastly we talked about just some seasonal fun getting on top of our holiday plans embracing the vibes like honestly turn on cardigan by Taylor Swift it will set the mood trust me on that and enjoy this transition into a new season being aligned with what's around you intentional about your. So intentional about your thoughts choices habits and also showing yourself some love I feel like honestly a lot of this whole episode is that you love yourself you're choosing to love yourself prioritize yourself make yourself feel great take care of your mental health prevent burnout really just feel organized and centered I think that comes from a place of love and compassion for one self.
