Eyes in the Window [Patreon Preview]

Bri grew up in a rural, religious region of the southern U.S., where beliefs about demons and the supernatural were common but personally questioned. At age six, she first saw glowing red eyes outside her bedroom window, which she named "Bobby" to make the experience less frightening. The eyes were described as non-human, unblinking, and moving like a head, with no animal or human features, leaving a lasting impression. She saw Bobby repeatedly, mostly on dark or cloudy nights, and kept the sightings private, especially from her parents, fearing dismissal. Her sister was the only one who knew, and her trust in her account remains uncertain. A pivotal moment came when, as a teenager, she and her sister were driving home from church at night, and a dark figure darted toward their car before veering away. This encounter deepened her belief in Bobby’s reality. Over time, Bri’s relationship with Bobby evolved from a childhood fear to a more complex, persistent presence that influenced her understanding of the supernatural, blending personal experience with cultural and familial influences.

She grew up in the rural south out in the country. And when she was just a little kid, she started seeing something outside her bedroom window at night. Two glowing red eyes. That's all she could make out, just the eyes. To make it less scary, she gave it a name. She called this thing Bobby. The thing is, Bobby didn't stay outside the window. Bri has had experiences with him at different points throughout her life. Some of them are pretty unsettling, and at least one time she was not the only person who saw him. This is the story of Bri and this thing Bobby, and how her opinions on it have changed throughout the years. I'll let her tell you about that herself. Once again, if you want to hear the full episode, patreon.com/otherworld. This is Bri, and you're listening to the otherworld patreon. So my name is Bri. I grew up in kind of the middle, nowhere, southern USA. So not a lot going on. It's a very religious area. So I grew up in the church. Specifically, we were considered like Southern Baptist, so like demons and angels and stuff like that was pretty ingrained to how it was raised. That being said, it's not something that I super believed in. Because I did have faith for a while, but the concept of demons didn't really make sense to me the way that they were taught and whether or not they were still active. Growing up, it was just my parents and my sibling, my sister, and I was younger, she was older, and my parents had a very complicated marriage. So it wasn't always happy. And so a lot of times, like my sister and I, we kind of kept ourselves. We were homeschooled, so we didn't really have a lot of friends, so like we did read a lot with video games. We would go outside and just play in the woods, because I kind of grew up in farmland, so there's not much around anyway. So going outside and playing with sticks was just as exciting as staying inside and playing with boxes. So the first time I had an encounter was about when I was six or seven years old. And I lived in a trailer back then, and so my bed kind of like was right up against a window, so I could very easily like look outside. Outside my window was just woods, so it was a tree line and a wood area. It was part of my family's property, because I kind of grew up across from farmland, so like all this is in the middle of country and farmland, so like there's fields, but my window specifically looked into the forest. And a lot of the times, like the moonlight would shine through the window and stuff, and like as a kid I really liked looking outside the window, and there was one time where I looked out this window and I saw a pair of like glowing red eyes. It's really hard to describe, because it is such an unusual phenomenon, and I've tried drawing it over the years, and I can't ever get it quite right. There was no silhouette to it, like there was this void around it that was a bit darker than I guess the rest of the forest, but I couldn't make out shapes. So all I'm staring at are a pair of eyes, and they're like about the same distance, like a normal person's face would be maybe a little bit further. And it wasn't pupils, so like it wasn't like glowing irises or anything like that. It was the entire shape of the eye was glowing, but it wasn't human either. But it also didn't really imagine any animals I've ever seen before, and like animal eyes don't reflect that way, so like that was also something that really stuck with me is like what I was looking at wasn't something I've ever seen before. And it didn't blink. It moved around as if like a head was moving. It was definitely something watching me, just kind of in the darkness. And it struck me because it's something I've never seen before, and it was like really scary, and I didn't know what to do about it. So I kind of just stared at the eyes, the eyes stared at me, and then I ignored it to the best I could. And I just kind of went to bed, but being as like this was like the first time I end up seeing these eyes pretty often outside my room over the years. And so to make it less scary for me, I end up giving this being a nickname, which ended up being Bobby, kind of like in the way that kids would nickname like their stuff animals. I called him like the red ID man, or I would call him Bobby, and it was just kind of the entry and changeable title whenever I did try to talk about him, but I also didn't talk about him very often or really ever unless it was like to my sister who kind of was a captive audience to whatever I had to say. The first few, a few times I saw it, like I would say I saw Bobby this creature, I think every couple months, I would say, and it was always at a fair distance from my window. So there was like 15 feet between my bedroom window and like the tree line up the woods. And most of the time, I will only see this creature when it was not super bright out. So like the moon wasn't full or it would be a cloudy night, which always made it hard to make out a figure. And like at some point, I just stopped looking because I didn't want to know it was there and I didn't want to know it was watching me. And I never told my parents because I don't really have like a super close relationship with them. And so like even though I was young, I felt like they might chalk it up to a being a dream or my imagination. So I never really told them about it. I did eventually tell my sister she'd never seen it before, but I also don't really know what her if she ever really believed me, that sort of thing. So I just kind of grew up with this thing outside my window in a way. When I was older, around 13 years old, my family, because back then we went to church every Sunday. And so when my sister and I were old enough to be taken to Wednesday night church. So we would have church services on Sunday morning, Sunday and Wednesday night. But my parents never took us to the Wednesday night service because it was past our bedtime. So now that we were reaching an age where we are teenagers now, my parents want to saw more important for us to make church on Wednesdays. So this was pretty early into us just starting to go on Wednesdays. We were going like every other week. And because I lived kind of in the middle of nowhere, there's the closest church that we had a 10 was like a 20 man drive into town. So like we would have to all load up in the car, make sure we got to church on time. And afterwards would be basically driving home in the dark because it's eight o'clock, nine o'clock, and I depending on how long the pastor decided to speak that night. And so around this time as well, like there was a lot of really high tensions in that my house, my parents were in a particular rough spot in their marriage. My sister and I are becoming teenagers. So we're getting a little bit snotty. And so that's a little extra pressure on my parents that they were ready to deal with. So we were we were on our way back from church. It was dark and it was like eight thirty or nine o'clock at night. And we were on the beginning stretch of the dirt road that led to my house. And there's like two miles of dirt road we have to get through in order to get back to my house. And so usually I just kind of gaze out the window and wait to get home because there's not much else you can do in a car. So I was looking out the window and I was kind of watching where the headlights ended and the darkness would kind of hit. And like I was just kind of watching the shapes of the sticks and the trees and whatnot because sometimes you can see deer in the woods. So like I was kind of looking out for deer or really anything else I was interesting. It had started turning into fall. So there was definitely a higher chance of seeing deer because it was around hunting season. So like you're going to they're going to be a little bit more active in the woods and stuff. And we were on this stretch where it was in between two houses. So like we had neighbors half a mile down the road and then towards the beginning of the dirt road. So like it was like two neighbors and then our house and it's just all woods in between. So we're in between the beginning of the road's neighbors house and we hadn't reached the second neighbors house yet. When this dark shape kind of comes bounding out of the woods very quickly. But it wasn't like far away from the road. So it was pretty much like right inside the tree line and just kind of shot forward. In a way that I would describe best as like a rabbit being startled and it kind of shot forward and like. I came right towards the door of the car where I was sitting and then it like very quickly veered right before hitting the door and then it just stayed in the shadowy area where the headlights ended and the darkness started and I could just see this figure running.
