Hi everyone and welcome to another podcast on the San Trey Therapy Journey. My name is Donna Meyers. I'm your host and I'm happy to have you here. In today's episode we're going to dive into the use of San Trey Therapy Directives exploring their purpose and the unique processing experiences they offer. By understanding the benefits and considerations of using San Trey Therapy Directives we can enhance the therapeutic journey for both clients and practitioners. So if you're ready let's dive in. To start our discussion let's explore what directives are and their role in San Trey Therapy. Directives are intentional instructions or suggestions given by the therapist to guide the client San Trey process. Unlike non-directive play therapy if you tuned into last episode which emphasizes the freedom for clients to explore without any specific instructions the use of directives provides a structured framework for therapeutic exploration. It has been shown that strategic use of directives can enhance the therapeutic process by focusing the client's attention facilitating exploration of specific themes or emotions and promoting targeted growth in healing. By offering directives therapists can help clients access deeper layers of their psyche gain insights and work through specific challenges. Now that we understand the concept of directives let's explore their purpose and the benefits they bring to the San Trey Therapy process. Directives serve various functions depending on the therapeutic goals and the client's unique needs. When using San Trey Therapy Directives it is first important to ensure that they are relevant to the agreed upon treatment goals that you and your client have. You do not want to offer directives if it is your agenda item to guide them where you feel they must go. The three main purposes of using a San Trey Therapy Directive are one if you are attempting to promote some self exploration and focus San Trey Therapy Directives can help with this with specific themes or prompts to explore for the client. This focus helps them dive deeper into their emotions and experiences enabling a more targeted exploration of specific issues or goals. For example if the treatment goal for your client was to heal from parental neglect a directive worth exploring might be how do you cope show me how you cope with these feelings. The second purpose may be if you're attempting to enhance symbolic expression. San Trey Therapy Directives encourage our clients to represent their thoughts, feelings or experiences symbolically in the San Trey. This symbolic expression allows for the externalization and exploration of complex inner processes facilitating a deeper understanding and integration. So in the same scenario with that client and their treatment goal being healing from parental neglect a San Trey Therapy Directive might be show me what it was like being a child in your home. This is the attempt to allow the client to symbolically express what it was like for them. And lastly if you're supporting their therapeutic goals directives can be tailored to address specific therapeutic goals such as building resiliency exploring relationships or processing trauma by providing guidance therapists can support clients in working towards these objectives within the San Trey. Again in the same client's treatment goal this would look like a directive of show me how you were neglected as a child. As therapists it's essential to understand how processing in directive based San Trey Therapy is different from non-directive approaches while both approaches have their merits. Directive based San Trey Therapy offers some unique benefits and considerations. In directive based San Trey Therapy the therapist guides the client through specific instructions encouraging them to focus on predetermined themes or concepts. This focused approach allows for targeted exploration and can provide a sense of containment and structure for clients who may feel overwhelmed or unsure where to begin. Think about those clients who just don't even know when you ask them to select from the miniatures and begin their first San Trey sometimes offering a directive such as just simply show me who you are or build a tray around your family etc. may be beneficial in helping with that feeling of initial anxiety. Additionally directive based San Trey Therapy can facilitate deeper processing by inviting our clients to engage with specific emotions specific memories or aspects of their lives. The structured nature of directives helps our clients explore these areas with intention and purpose often leading to insights, emotional release and cognitive shifts. It is different than non-directive therapy where we don't offer a directive and allow the client just to go where their brain needs to go. It's important for therapists to balance the use of directives with the client's autonomy and self-expression. The goal is not to impose rigid expectations but to offer gentle guidance that encourages the client's unique exploration and interpretation within the San Trey. I just want to acknowledge and highlight a few considerations and ethical guidelines for using directives in San Trey Therapy. While using directives in San Trey Therapy can be beneficial, it's still important to approach them ethically and thoughtfully. Here are some considerations and guidelines for incorporating directives into your San Trey Therapy. Number one, client centered approach always always prioritize the client's needs goals and preferences. Taylor your directives to their unique circumstances and respect their autonomy in the San Trey Therapy process. Number two, by providing clear communication, provide clear explanation of the directives being asked. Ensure your client understands the purpose, the expectations and the potential outcomes. Encourage open dialogue and invite questions or clarifications. Number three, flexibility and adaptability. It is your job to remain open to adjustments and modifications based on your client's responses and evolving therapeutic journey. Directives should be flexible enough to accommodate the client's changing needs and insights. And lastly, ongoing assessment. It is important that you continuously assess the impact of directives on your client's progress and well-being. Regularly check in with your client, gather feedback and make adjustments as necessary. As we conclude this episode of the San Trey Therapy journey, we have explored the purpose, the benefits and considerations of using directives in San Trey Therapy. The strategic application of directives can enhance the therapeutic process, offering structure, focus and opportunities for targeted exploration. Remember, the use of directives should always be guided by ethical considerations and a client-centered approach. By thoughtfully incorporating directives into your San Trey Therapy practice, you can create a safe and transformative space for clients to engage in profound self-exploration and healing.
