Evening Wire: G7 Allies Agree to Open Oil Reserves & Job Growth Comes In Low | 10.2.26
9m 28s
The U.S. economy showed weaker job growth in September, with only 29,000 new jobs reported—far below expectations—while unemployment rose to 4.2%. This follows downward revisions to earlier data, though broader economic indicators like strong GDP growth and falling fuel prices offer some stability. In response to soaring diesel prices, the U.S. and G7 allies are releasing 100 million barrels of fuel from strategic reserves to ease shortages caused by infrastructure disruptions. Legal developments include a denial of a retrial motion in Lindsay Clancy’s case, ongoing scrutiny of the Cornell rape allegations, and criticism of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for making unsubstantiated claims. ICE is also overhauling its traffic stop policies after fatal incidents, requiring specialized training and restricting the use of force. Meanwhile, Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. are merging under the new name "Skydance," maintaining brand identities. In politics, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has removed the original DA from the Cornell case and appointed a new special prosecutor, vowing to address investigative shortcomings. Additionally, President Trump has dispatched a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East, signaling escalation in U.S. military posture amid tensions with Iran. These developments highlight a volatile mix of economic, legal, and geopolitical shifts shaping current national and international affairs.

New jobs numbers for September have come in a bit below the projected goal,
and U.S. and G7 allies are set to release 100 million barrels of diesel from reserves.
I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire executive editor John Bickley. It's Friday, October 2nd,
and this is Evening Wire. The Lindsay Clancy legal saga continued this week after the judge
overseeing the case denied a motion that would have stopped her from facing retrial. The motion
argued that prosecutors did not present enough evidence in court to convict and asked the judge
to rule her not guilty. Clancy's defense attorney still has one more motion filed to block a retrial
that has not yet been ruled on. Either way, prosecutors in Massachusetts have not said
whether they intend to try Clancy's case again, so the motion may not be necessary.
Clancy's trial ended in a mistrial last month after the jury deadlocked 11 to 1.
The U.S. economy added fewer jobs than expected in September at just 29,000. The new numbers
released today fall well below the projected 90,000, while the unemployment rate ticked
slightly higher than expected to 4.2 percent. Meanwhile, downward adjustments for August and
July show the numbers at about 60,000 lower than previously reported. But the disappointing
numbers come amid some pleasant surprises on the economy. The U.S. economy has been
in the lead for a long time, including a better-than-projected 2.2 percent GDP growth
last quarter and slightly falling gas prices over the last week. The U.S. and its G7 allies have
agreed to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude from strategic reserves over the next
four months as fuel prices soar amid the war in Iran. Associate producer Garrett Fantim has the
latest. The coordinated release, which begins immediately, is intended to ease shortages after
strikes on energy infrastructure, damaged refineries, and roadblocks. The U.S. economy
is expected to reduce the world's capacity to produce diesel. U.S. diesel prices recently
approached $6.50 a gallon, while the price of futures fell 8 percent Friday after the
announcement. The move also comes as President Trump considers banning U.S. diesel exports,
a proposal opposed by American oil companies and European leaders who say Europe relies
heavily on American fuel. French President Emmanuel Macron said Trump had committed to
not imposing an export ban on diesel to G7 countries. The heroic fly Dubai pilot who
saved the plane and its passengers from a Muslim terrorist opened up for the first time about the
moment his own co-pilot turned on him. Foreign affairs reporter Cassia Kiva has more.
In an emotional call with India's prime minister today, Captain Smit Macha said,
quote, I was fighting for my life. I had suffered so many wounds I had fallen down.
But when I was lying down there, I could hear the aircraft was going down. I knew absolutely that
this was the one last push. The door was right there. I just opened it, sir. Everyone else came
in.
Split second decision saved 174 lives. We've also learned more about the attacker. The heroic
passenger said that after they were able to subdue him, that he then told them to, quote, kill him,
meaning that he, quote, failed at his mission and preferred to die, said one of the Israeli heroes.
Israeli authorities believe that the co-pilot had undergone Islamic radical indoctrination
and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised that if somebody sent him to commit
the terror attack, they would pay a very heavy price.
This has made another major policy change on traffic stops.
Immigration reporter Jenny Tehr has more.
ICE is changing its rules for vehicle stops, requiring officers to complete specialized
training before they can pull over vehicles and ordering them not to pursue drivers who
refuse to stop. An internal agency memo obtained by The Daily Wire says officers who complete one
of six additional training courses can conduct traffic stops, while those who do not will serve
only in a support capacity.
The memo says,
The memo also limits the use of tire deflation devices and vehicle pinning to specially trained
officers and requires emergency lights, sirens and body cameras during stops. The changes follow
several recent ICE-involved shootings during vehicle stops, including a shooting in Austin
last month. And it also comes after DHS previously halted all ICE traffic stops
following two fatal shootings in Maine and Texas.
The Paramount and Warner Brothers discovery post-merger name has been revealed. Paramount
Skydance and Warner Brothers will have a new name once their merger is complete.
Daily Wire reporter Amanda Harding has more.
Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison announced the new name on Friday.
The new company will take from Paramount and simply be called Skydance.
Ellison explained in a social media post that the new name will preserve the distinct identities
and extraordinary legacies of both the brands of Paramount and Warner Brothers,
which will remain separate entities under Skydance.
After the merger, he wrote, quote,
By combining them, we aren't rewriting history. We're equipping these iconic studios with a more
powerful engine. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has removed the DA from the Cornell alleged rape
case, citing, quote, lack of confidence and appointed Attorney General Letitia James as
the special prosecutor to take over. Hochul says she's deeply disturbed with the original
investigation and is vowing to, quote, not allow anyone to sweep the case under the rug.
The governor also says she supports closing what she called,
a loophole, making it difficult to claim rape after willingly consuming alcohol and drugs.
Meanwhile, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is getting warnings that she could end up facing legal action
over her comments about the Cornell case. Associate producer Brooke Morgato has more.
During a town hall Sunday, AOC made claims that go beyond the actual facts of the case
and clash with what the university has already addressed. Here's some of her comments.
Seven men drugged and gang raped.
A 20-year-old woman. They lured her in to a fraternity house. They drugged her with ketamine.
They then posted to a group chat that she was incapacitated. And seven men took turns
gang raping her for seven hours. Their fraternity knew. This was reported to Cornell University.
And after looking into this matter, they expelled two of them and made the rest
write essays as their form of punishment.
Critics have pointed out that none of those statements are proven,
and most do not actually align with what the woman who has filed the lawsuit claims.
President Trump has ordered a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East. That's according
to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The new vessel will come with more than 10,000
more Marines as the U.S. prepares for the next stage in the war with Iran.
President Trump has not been clear about what the next step will be, though he has,
predicted that the U.S. and Iran could strike a peace deal after the midterm elections.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the USS Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group are
expected to arrive in the Middle East in November, though it's not clear where it will sit.
The carrier will join the USS George H.W. Bush and the USS George Washington in the region.
And every Democrat in the Senate voted Wednesday to block legislation that would restrict
congressional stock purchases and require photo ID to vote in federal elections. The stop insider
for the trading act fell seven votes short of the 60 needed to advance. All Republicans supported
advancing the measure, while Democrats and both independents opposed it. The no votes claimed the
trading restrictions were inadequate and also objected to the voter ID provision. The legislation
which passed the House in July would bar lawmakers, their spouses and their dependent children from
purchasing new individual publicly traded stocks, but would allow them to retain existing holdings.
It also requires public notice seven to 14 days before selling.
