I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire executive editor John Bickley. It's Wednesday, September 9th. And this is Evening Wire. Oil hit $100 a barrel today for the first time since July as the Iran war pushes into its seventh month. Crude is now up. Nearly 40% from where it stood before the fighting began, leading to gas averaging more than $4 a gallon. The most recent squeeze comes from shipping struggles in the Gulf, where Iran continues to try to block traffic through the Hormuz Strait. Bank of America analysts say a ceasefire could bring a swift reversal in prices, but further damages to surrounding energy infrastructure could send crude higher. The U.S. struck five more Iranian ships, while Tehran signals a readiness to escalate the war even further. Foreign affairs reporter Cassia Kassiuk, Akiva, has the latest. The U.S. destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after failed attacks on American warships. And Iran claims it retaliated by striking 10 vessels and firing missiles towards a U.S. base in Jordan. Iran's Revolutionary Guard is also warning that it will hit 20 targets for every two or three U.S. strikes. President Trump told reporters today that he expects the Iran war to end immediately after the November midterm elections, accusing Tehran of trying to influence the vote and preserve its ability to develop a nuclear weapon. And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today that Iran's Islamic Republic is very close to collapse. More than 230,000 Salvadorans could lose their legal protection from deportation today, as the Trump administration moves to end TPS for immigrants from countries that no longer meet the requirements. Immigration reporter Jenny Ter has more. The U.S. first granted TPS to Salvadorans in 1990 during the country's civil war and renewed the protections after devastating earthquakes in 2001. But the program has continued for decades through repeated extensions. The Trump administration has argued that conditions have improved in many countries that previously received TPS, and that continuing temporary protections indefinitely no longer serve U.S. interests. Homeland Security Secretary Mark Wynne Mullen has yet to announce whether he will extend the Salvadorian designation, leaving the status of hundreds of thousands of immigrants uncertain. The one-year memorial for Charlie Kirk is set up. The memorial is set to take place tomorrow at Utah Valley University, where he was assassinated last September, but is now facing an organized protest by left-wing students. Reporter Zach Jewell has more. Turning Point USA is spearheading the event, but it is facing opposition from students who object to the university hosting the memorial and canceling classes for the day. UVU says the closure is intended to "provide time and space for reflection," while President John Anderson has stressed that the administration intends to remain apolitical and that the memorial is not sponsored by the university. UVU will provide security because of the event's expected size and potential for controversy. The university's Students for a Democratic Society chapter is reportedly organizing a protest at 6:15 p.m. just 15 minutes before the memorial begins. The openly left-wing group also wrote an open letter to Anderson, accusing him of having "aligned himself with the interests of Charlie Kirk's organization by allowing TPUSA to hold the event on campus." The university has further accused Turning Point USA of being "openly racist and antagonistic," and said the organization was pushing "a narrative of victimhood" by memorializing its assassinated founder. The students also argued that allowing TPUSA to hold the memorial would negatively affect them, despite the event being privately organized and held at the UCCU Center. The Freedom Built to Last memorial begins at 6:30 p.m. and is intended by TPUSA to honor Kirk and continue his good work. The high-stakes legal circus surrounding Lindsay Clancy took an explosive turn this morning as her defense attorney revealed he's fighting to throw out the case entirely. Lawyer Kevin Reddington announced on CBS Mornings that he will file a motion to dismiss all charges on September 29th on double jeopardy grounds. He argued that the presiding judge rushed to declare a mistrial last week without "manifest necessity." Since the mistrial, three jury members have come forward detailing the screaming matches and deliberations, singling out who they called a "arrogant, lone male" holdout who denied a unanimous verdict. Sapporo's non-alcoholic production currently operates in Canada, but is now seeking a home in the U.S. and plans to fully relocate by early next year. The Trump administration's additional 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports took effect August 22nd after trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed. The White House says tariffs were imposed in response to Canada's treatment of American exports, including cars, alcohol, and dairy products. Hunter Biden has launched a cryptocurrency tied to the infamous laptop from hell scandal that dogged his father's 2020 presidential campaign. And in less than 24 hours, the coin lost nearly all of its value. Associate producer Garrett Van Tien has the story. Hunter Biden's laptop meme token began trading this morning above $190 before plunging to about $2.15 within an hour, a drop of more than 98%. While the coin only launched today, blockchain records show millions of tokens were distributed to market makers in unidentified wallets before the public launch, which is usually a sign of impending scandal in the crypto world. A common scam, called a pump-and-dump, occurs when you distribute a bunch of coins pre-launched to friends and accomplices, then publicize the launch to drive interest, only for the in-group to immediately sell off their coins once the much larger out-group starts buying in. The out-group drives up the price, the in-group cashes out, and the coin plummets. While we don't yet know to what extent, if at all, this crash was orchestrated, Hunter Biden launched the project by mocking the controversy surrounding his infamous laptop. He even acknowledged that the laptop contained the exact lewd and illegal material reported on by the media, writing, "I am not denying any of it." A researcher at the top AI company Anthropic has resigned, warning that the technology could wipe out humanity. Jacob Coxon, who spent three years doing pre-training research at Anthropic and OpenAI, wrote on X that neither company is acting responsibly, and that AI could "kill us by the end of the decade." Anthropic team lead Evan Hubbinger publicly agreed with his assessment, putting his own odds of AI killing every human at better than 1 in 10 odds within the next decade. Another safety manager at Anthropic agreed with this sentiment about human extinction, but argued that Anthropic is best equipped to handle the fallout from superintelligence. A common sentiment among AI researchers is that if they don't develop superintelligence, someone else will, and it could end up in the wrong hands. Uganda has pulled out of Prince Harry's invasion of Invictus Games in support of the crown. Lifestyle reporter Lauren Baer has more. Harry founded the games in 2014 as an international multi-sport competition for wounded veterans. The games have continued under the prince's watch despite his abdication of royal duties in 2020. Now Uganda, a former British protectorate, has withdrawn from the games. In a statement on X, General Mohozi Kanyaragaba, the country's chief of defense forces and son of the Ugandan president, wrote, In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere. Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games. The statement comes just two days after King Charles issued a public declaration clarifying Harry's royal status upon his recent return to the UK. And the GOP is kicking off its first ever midterm RNC tonight in Dallas. Tonight's events, which will be headlined by President Trump, are expected to focus on border enforcement, healthcare, and the economy.
