Europe w/ Fahim Anwar | You Be Trippin' with Ari Shaffir

A comedian shares a candid travel story from his solo backpacking trip across Western Europe, beginning with a self-initiated journey after years of not traveling independently. He starts in London and Paris, then moves to Rome, where he faces a painful, swollen foot from what he believes is a bug bite. Initially misdiagnosed in a poorly run hospital in Rome, where a doctor questions if he burned his foot on a scooter, the experience highlights the lack of trust in foreign medical systems. After relocating to Madrid, where symptoms worsen, he eventually finds relief through a doctor in Paris who correctly diagnoses and treats the issue. The experience underscores the importance of preparedness, flexibility, and reliable medical support when traveling alone. He reflects on how hostels, while affordable, often lack the comfort or medical oversight needed during health crises. The episode concludes with advice to travel with a few key destinations, avoid over-planning, and prioritize flexibility. The host also promotes wellness products like Super Power and Mars Man, tying health and travel experiences together. Ultimately, the story blends humor, vulnerability, and practical travel wisdom, reinforcing the value of personal resilience and self-reliance in real-world adventures.

Anything you want, dude. It's like 360. I just want to do this whole pot because I can. I mean, yeah. I feel like a podcast terminator, dude. Dude, dude, dude, dude, dude, dude. It's so funny. Oh no, no, no, it's good, right? You've never had a guest fuck around this much with the arm for no reason? Where you been and where you going? This is our Reese Travel Show, yeah. We're gonna talk about travel today. It's you be tripping, yeah. Hello, everybody. Welcome to UB tripping. It's the only travel podcast that was mentioned in the Quran. Today's episode, every week, if you don't know, we go to one magical or horrible place in the world with someone who's been there and they're telling about their experiences there. It's not a travel, like a how-to. It's not like lonely planet. It's not like the places you should be seeing. It's just like what it's more a vacation thing than what you did. Good or bad? So today, good friend of mine, hilarious comic with a new special out called House Money on YouTube. Yeah, man, for him and one of the best comics in LA and therefore the world. Holy shit. I love this intro. Thank you, man. Yeah, I mean, I'm working on him. I was really bad as an introduction guy for this not happening. I would like to really screech everything through a halt. I would constantly be like, I'm a bad MC. And then he's worked on it or what? It's funny that you learn that after tapings. Yeah, no, I never got better. I should be better at this after it's all in the can. I brought up Joe list and I was like, is one of my best friends. I was like, well, no, he's a good friend of mine. He's friends of mine. Yeah, you even downplay that and then Joe was like, why would you have to say? I'm not one of your best friends. What did it gain? I love list for you to know. I was like, sorry about that. It already goes. No, it helped me get settled with the crowd. Yeah, yeah. He's wild that you would have to stop yourself. Your autism would stop yourself from. Uh, we're acquaintances actually. I mean, you know, you know, I mean, I enjoy myself when I see him. But, uh, what do you do? My best band? No, I wouldn't say that. He'd be invited. Yeah. And he's like, when are you bringing me up, dude? Just bring me up. My name is, you know, just say Joe list. Ladies and gentlemen, um, yeah, you're an L.A. guy for a bit. And then you bounce. I'm an L.A. comic. Yeah, I bounced. Yeah. I remember that, man, bouncing. Who said? Yeah. It's kind of cool though, because I remember when you left. And then you were in New York, plugging away. And then you're just getting bigger and bigger. And then I forget when it was, but I just definitely noticed when they announced you, you got a pop that you never got before. You know, and I just as a young comic, I noticed that. And that was like interesting. And yeah, you see it happen with other people too. Like, I saw a shame this week. Where do you play? I mean, we always play. I don't only time I ever play with him is like a comedy by the ship, where we're all famous. Yeah. Or Vulcan, you know, same ship. What a rogue and shows were all famous. But back at like the seller or the standard something is like, they knew him a little, but now it's like, oh my, you're the biggest comic in the world, I think. No, for real, not even I think it is. Like, like what Louie was. Yeah, you're not that. You're like, yes, fucking, yes, I was like, wow. Wow. And it's like, the none of them know he's fat. Can they? Like, you're cheering for fat? Well, no, he rides the line. He's like the blade of skinny and fat. Yeah, you can't put him in one box or the other, man. He's like a tight end. Yeah, what is he right, right? Other than other fat people, he's not so fat. Well, he's tall, but he's there's like muscle under there as well. Under deep under there. He's not, he doesn't read as like Ralphie May or something. He's not a Ralphie, man, all right, you know, R.I.P. That's good for Shane's like, if he died, he was not Ralphie, man. He's not Ralphie. He was no Ralphie, man. Yeah, he was not supposed to be like, he's skinny. He's what it means. Like, oh, that's a comment. I'm excited to see his SNL man. Yeah, yeah, well, anyway. Yeah, yeah. So, um, where are we going today? What do you want to, what do you want to tell me about? Uh, oh, yeah. Why don't we backpacking in Europe when I was working a Boeing? Love it, first of all. I dreamed of what's pitching this show to like guests who don't do podcasts like Tucker Carlson or like some like athlete or some writer. Well, you do in a travel show. He's doing Russia. Then where's he going to? Yeah, yeah, yeah. But like part of it's like, hey, not a who you are. You went backpacking when you were when you were younger. Yeah, you know, it's like, Biden or something. Didn't you have a period where you're like, let me see. Well, there's there's a period where hostels are an option to you. Right. And then you get aged out of that. So you better, you better get it while you can. Yeah. So I mean, I just got a job at Boeing, uh, I worked on the 747-8. Yeah, you remember, I worked at Boeing in Long Beach. And so, you know, I just left. I lived at home forever. So I didn't have any adulting experience. Like, you know, I lived under my parents' roof forever. My mom made breakfast and shit and they're really party and stuff. Yeah, you're an Arab to the core. Well, I'm afghan. It's not technically Arab, but that's our on that. Yeah, that's our ongoing thing. Like, you do that. Bobby does that as well. You're just like, yeah, you're an Arab. You're like, you're all the same word. I love it. I've got my Arab. Like, you're the Chinese. Yeah. See it. I mean, they're right here. There are there. But we're like in the sand. You can like center your camera on this. It's like, yeah. We from far off. So Israel is start of Asia. It is. Yeah. Technically, it's right here. It's this and over. Even though everyone considers Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, that's all Middle East or Africa, really. You know, yeah. Like Yemen seems like Africa. I don't know where it's just down the street. But Israel is Asia. The line is Egypt is Africa. You're Asian, dude. I'm Asian. That's right. But if you do that, well, then way deeper is Afghanistan. Yeah. So I mean, when I was working at Boeing, they bought Pakistan. Oh, yeah, we share a border. Yeah. That's what it's like. Yeah. What if it was like two hours of us just like checking out the geometry and borders? Oh, Calade. Oh, Bangladesh. I have shirts from there. That's a good one. So I was on my own, you know, like, and I had these vacation days that accrued just I never took them. Yeah. And then there was some company wide email that was like, if you don't use your days by this date, it'll be chopped in half. What? Yeah. It was just some egregious thing like that. I'm like, that's fucking bullshit. Yeah. So I'm like, I'm going to use them. I'm not just going to have them be halfed. But I worth it. Should be like, hey, if you use it by this day, we're just paying you for them and then you lose them. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You're paying as if you worked totally. So I wasn't going to get extra money and they were going to half it. So I'm like, let me just, I got to use these days. And I go, I've never been to Western Europe. I've never been anywhere really. I'm like, I'll do I'll do like a Western Europe. What's Western Europe? You know, like the classics. Oh, Western is like France. It's like the thriller of Europe just UK, Paris. Yes. So I organized it was like, uh, Germany. No, I wanted to do that. You told me about Berlin. I got to do that sometime. I want to see Germany. But I did London, Paris, Madrid. And there was one more room. Yeah. All right. So like, I was trying to find people to go with and I couldn't find anybody. I'm just going to do it by myself. Love that. Yeah. It's liberating. Some people can't even eat at a restaurant by themselves. But once you can be comfortable just eating at a restaurant by yourself, it opens up the world to you, dude. A movie by yourself, which I was I do that all the time now. And then I remember coming from the old stand, walking down third. There's a movie there on like third and like 11th. And it was like spider man, maybe like starting in five. Toby. Yeah, I told him a guy. Nice. And it was like, well, Tuesday night alone. I was like, yeah, I was watching. Well, especially when you're a comic and you're on the road and you just, Tuesday at 11 30. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, on the road, too. It's like, like, and you're not big enough to bring a feature yet. Yeah. What the fuck else am I going to do? I'll watch a movie by myself. So I'm like, I'll just backpack by myself. That's so cool. Yeah, man. And then I got a Google five. I organized it all. Huh? How long we over to go for like two weeks? It was like two or three weeks. This thing. And so I did it was great. I got I did hostels and stuff. I got this like backpacking thing and organized it. And it's, yeah. Well, actually, what I tried to do at first, because I'm like super cheap. I tried to do this thing called couch surfing. So there's a website called couch surfing.com. I can give it. Can I give a just thing? What year was this? Like 20 2008 or 2006? I think 2018 was the end of couch surfing because then the creeps found out about it. And it was kind of well, even when I was even when I was trying to couch surf, no one wants to host a dude. I wouldn't. Well, I'm I was so naive. Like who the fuck wants to host a random deal? What are you going to like steal? Are you going to beat me up? Yes. But the dream of maybe we'll fuck every guy. Every guy wants to host a girl. So if you were a girl trying to couch serve, it was gonna be way easier, but the fallout of that is you may have to deal with like a creepy German dude is like My bed was uncomfortable today. Yeah, it's your, it's your lumpy tube Like my bed smells. Oh duh. I guess you could hop into mine It's not the best German accent, but so I was actually only able to line up couch serving in Paris But everywhere else I had to pony up and pay a hostel. So I mean, I went yeah, I went to London first. I did an episode of this from a hostel in Paris. I love Paris, dude I mean Sam tell him we're talking about Paris. We love it. I thought it would be I thought I never was drawn to it at all This is for a different episode, but never drawn to it at all But I had to take a writing class was there so I went and I was like, oh this rules What is it? I mean, I liked it. It's so planned. It's a plan city A lot of West Africans, which is shockingly a big part of their fucking culture and the food they're watching food But like just the for the the coffee culture of just sitting drinking for three hours in a place while you write like all those chairs outside All those chairs outside just as a kid. They're like hi. Can you keep your kid to keep him quiet? And it's just like it's so cool. It's the coolest place to smoke cigarettes Yeah, I liked it a lot So it was like London than Paris, and then I went to Rome. Okay, and then that's where things would south. So like Love a beginning of act too pretty much. Yeah, so When I was booking all this shit I'm I'm in Long Beach, you know that's where I'm living and so I'm just booking it on Google Maps And you don't know how far things are and how to get around so you're kind of approximating Yeah, you're not a local so you don't know if you're in the thick of it or not when I moved to LA Me and my roommate were like looking we're like oh, we can get a pool of Tarzanah Tarzanah looks right there. I'm I live in Tarzanah. Really? Yeah, so far Dude everyone when I tell him I live in Tarzanah They think I live on Mars, but dude. I'm telling you it takes 23 minutes to get to the comedy store. That's not very far at all. It's not far at all Okay, but it is the valley and his people are Alitist out there in LA if you're not in a wehoe. You're scum of the earth. I guess so I get to Rome and I got this hostel that that I think is close enough to Rome because I'm still cheap Right, yeah, and this is a cheap hostel, but it's not like in the heart of Rome But I'm like, oh, it's not that far. I think this bus takes you there. It's like pretty easy. I read some things I think this is doable and then I get to the hostel and It's it's kind of out there, man. It's more out there than I thought it was gonna be and also it's these portables So it's not I it's not like an indoor hostel. It's it's like outdoor kind of music festively portables, you know, and it's It's young people who have gone with their own cruise like there's no like single people by themselves Oh, no, it's sort of just like groups groups suck at hostels Well suck if they're inviting, but it's just like oh, we're all supposed to be lonely and open Yes, yes, and you're supposed to experience these things together. You're supposed to be these kinetic. Hey, what are you guys all doing? We're all going out to get some local tacos. Yeah, okay, sure But if it's a group of seven and they're just doing their own that's kind of annoying because you have no one and you're just like sad so Yeah, yeah, so I'm I'm just kind of getting sadder and sadder like oh no, I've fuck I've made a terrible mistake I'm in Rome, but I'm so far away and and then when you sign in they give you this complimentary coupon for you get a pizza and a beer So I go to the the food courtyard, you know, yeah, yeah, and then I'm like, yeah, I'll have I'm I'm already a pizza and I'll have a peroni And then they give it to me and then I go to a table by myself And then I'm just saying I'm seeing all these groups having fun I'm seeing all these groups having fun Yeah, and there's a pool and shit and they're all like they have like tight bonds and abs, you know, and there's like eating cars Yeah, yeah, this is like my high school experience in Rome for some reason like or in the outskirts of Rome So I'm just eating this like sad What's in water? Yeah, why not? Yeah, keep going. Yeah, so I'm just eating the sad Margarita pizza And it was the first time I had a peroni which I was a fan. It was kind of nice to have it out there for my first one But I'm just I'm eating this pizza holding back tears and Then I'm like fuck this man. I'm gonna get a different hostel and I think maybe I slept there one night Why would you go to that just because they're so grouped up? I'm not gonna be like, hey, you you hard bodies look like you're having fun Can I hang out with you guys? I will tell you low. It's like that that moment of like fuck. I don't know anybody this sucks Once it's replaced with You want to learn a car game pick? Okay, and then you just get over and then you're like I know that zero to 60s tough Sometimes it helps with someone's like, hey, what are you doing or? So I slept there one night and then I just made an executive decision I go it's gonna cost more money. I don't care how when am I in Italy? You're ruin it. Oh the way I go because I was gonna be there for like four days in this terrible situation I go I'm gonna get a hostel in the heart of Rome So I get it and then I yeah, I switch it up and then as my vacation is progressing in Rome My foot is like getting kind of swollen a little bit like this little patchy and it's just like a little little little swollen Oh my god, that's weird. I think it's gonna go away or whatever Yeah, but as as the day progress as each day progress It's like getting more and more swollen where it's like no, that's not that's not good And then it's not getting better what and then at one point it's just it just looks so bad and it starts hurting a lot man Like it's so puffy. I Okay, my my assumption I still know to this day. Yeah, I think it's it was a bug bite from from that hostel I was initially at but not bed bugs. That's not you don't get swollen from that you get bites and itchy Yeah, I don't think this is bed bugs out. This is something else. I think it's gonna infection from like a bug bite or something So it's just like swelling up like like crazy not even crazy yet. I'll show you the progression so Now it's getting bad enough and I make these friends in this new hostel There's these three other brown guys who were like in med school. They're from New York actually I should actually like reach out to them Yeah, and so they're really cool. We were doing stuff together and and just I'm you know I'm telling about about the foot thing and then it gets so bad I'm like I gotta go to the hospital or something it gets that bad. Yeah. Yeah So then I go I go to the hospital. I get this this hospital room. So this one that we went to, okay, so we go there maybe it was so bad, dude. Pretty much. Or it seemed like a hospital from the 20s or something. So we go there, we're waiting forever. They had it before us. No. So like we're just waiting in the waiting room forever. I think I didn't get admitted until like midnight and we got there at 1 p.m. So we're just waiting forever. And these guys were such troopers. They stayed with me the whole time and then they admit me and then I just thought they would check it out and like make me leave, but they like check me into the hospital. And then I'm like, bye guys. And that's the last I see those guys pretty much, you know? Or no, no, no, no, I do. Okay, so here's what happened. So I get admitted. I'm in the hospital bed. I'm in this hospital in Rome because of this foot thing. And it was so late. By the time they admitted me, they weren't able to check me out that night. So I'm staying in it. I'm in a, they gave you a room. They gave me, it wasn't a room. It was like a big room with a bunch of beds. Okay. So I'm in there with other ailing people. Wow. I'm picturing like a like a war war to like that's what it's like. Yes. Wow. Yeah. And you know, like patches over their eyes like pretty wife. Yeah. I swear to God. Lieutenant Dan's in one of them, too. So pretty pictures of this stuff of me in the hospital, not me in the hospital. And then I was so hungry because I was waiting the whole time and then I got admitted that there wasn't any food. I'm asked the nurses and the nurses are nuns. Yeah. So I'm like, I'm hungry. Do you have food? And then she was like passed when there's supposed to be food, but this lady was nice enough to bring me soup in like crackers. So I just remember sitting cross leg, yeah, cross leg it was delicious. But I'm sitting cross leg it. And I just remember being huddled over the soup just slurping it because I was so hungry and just eating these crackers like a mouse. And then and then just laying in bed. And I couldn't sleep because there was a guy in another bed who I could just hear hear him wailing throughout the night. He'd be like, Oh, he would stop. He would stop for long enough. I'd be like, okay, here you go. Like he was even he was even in pain in Italian. And so I'm just having to sleep through the night like that. And then I wake up in the morning. So the doctor comes by, he's like Bobby Fisher just doing the rounds, you know, going to bed to bed to do his diagnosis. So he goes to this bed and is like, but I read the energy, whatever, you know, I don't know, I don't know Italian. So he's doing his shit. And then the nun nurses are by him, like flanked by the sides. And he's like, and then he gets to me and he's looking at my foot. And he's like, well, when do we pull up a foot? Should we do one now? Yeah, pull it up. All right. Show me. Let's take you through a journey, guys. Okay. If you're watching on YouTube, go to youtube.com/damage. I wish I knew the website. I think it's you'd be tripping pod. You'd be tripping. Unless I put it on Ari Shafir. I thought you were joking about you be tripping. And then I like calculated again. I'm like, that's actually a great name. Thanks. So what kind of kind of thing? The old. Okay. So that's you. So this is free swall, free swall. Gorgeous, by the way. Where is that? What is that? You know my mirror, the fountain, dude. The fountain. Oh, I forgot where I forgot where that was. Look at young for him. I know what happened. Look at how cool. Dude, isn't it cool? Even just those, you can extend this if you want to. Like, but that that cab minivan behind you. Oh, those. I can almost imagine it makes a different sound. In the sirens go. The sirens go. Yeah, yeah. Feels like you're a Jason board. Yeah. And the in the phones go. Are they sound different? All right. So all is well here. Gorgeous. Yeah. Town square, huh? Boom, seeing. You've seen that, right? That's a famous place. I've never been there, but that's cool. A simpler time. Look at Arab kid. Again, not Arab, not Arab. From there we go. But like, this is the Arab areas from Egypt. Yeah, man. Talk to Wikipedia. Where's Arab, though? Because the Egyptians don't think they're Arab either. This is eluded historians for ages. No one knows who's Arab. I do. It's you. I guess. I'm just curly hair back dance before you got jailed, huh? Well, I blow dry now. I'm like the curl closet, you know, if I just towel dried, I would have had tons of curls today. Wow. So, yeah, all is well. And then, okay. This is your boy. Yeah. This is the hospital. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. So they came with me to the hospital. We've been waiting for hours. Are you only friends with other Arabs? No, but these kids are India. They're Indian. Yeah. What's funny is like, we were hanging out together just because we just happen to be bunked together in the same room. And whenever we go places, people would just assume that we're part of the same trip because we're all brown. Right. And then for the first couple times you'd be like, no, I'm from LA and these guys are from New York, but we hated doing that clunky correction every time. So we're just like, yeah, we're all from New York. It's sort of, I should just say, yeah, I'm Arab. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you are. It's easier. It's a little different. By the way, this makes, this reminds me so much of Hossalife. The kids got his glasses on his forehead, his whatever. He's got the double water bottle. The big one. Yeah, that's like a big day of water. It's a staple of a fucking Hossalur. Get the two liter and walk. Yeah. They're like good dudes. They didn't, they didn't have to stay at that hospital that long with it. Well, the one in behind it was definitely trying to fuck this old guy. That's true, but who wouldn't look at this guy? He's like, she's radiant. Yeah. And then this guy in front like looking at right at the camera, like, can you believe he's trying to fuck another old lady? I know. But that's what he does. Yeah. And then again, another one. Not, not she's trying to, you know, fuck him. Obviously, you don't seem swole there. No, I am. Okay. Or not. I mean, it's not as bad as you'll see. That phone behind you. Yeah. Oh, sorry. Can I see that? They, uh, they checked my blood. That's why I got that going on. Oh, it's so cool. What the fuck? It's like, it's question seven. Leave blow. Yeah. It's pretty funny. Just like a CSI episode where they go, enhance and it doesn't get any, the resolution doesn't increase enhance enhance enhance. It is just one pixel and they go, got him. Yeah. Enhance. There's no enhance. Like, well, no, this is before you can only get better technology forward. Not backwards. All right. So that's what it started as. Okay. What the fuck is that? It's just this red rash. I'm one of those Adidas. Oh, I'm joking. I'm joking. So it started there, like on the back, on the back of my foot, like that kind of. Oh, that's the back. Okay. I think for the side. Yeah. Do you think they did it? Can I, in Australian bit me, like they bite in the shape of their, their continent. Okay. So yeah, it was kind of some, it was on that ankle area and then what? I don't know what so. Okay. So that's what it was when I got admitted to the hospital. Yeah. This is the state I was in. Yeah. So he's speaking Italian, the nurses are translating. She goes up, the doctor is asking, because he's puzzled, and he's looking at it with a pen and stuff. And she goes, he wants to know, did you burn your foot on a scooter? And I go, what? She goes, yeah, the doctor wants to know, did you burn it on a scooter? And when I heard that, and just the state of the facility and the way it's being run and the question from a doctor looking at what's happening to my foot, being, did I burn it on a scooter? Me like a hot scooter you touched it in the wrong way? Yeah, like maybe it was a-- But also, no. No shit. Yeah, so that's not even close to right. If in your medical opinion, you think I burned my leg on a Vespa is what's going on here? And wouldn't I come in with, hey, I think it might be related to the mass of pain I was in a certain touch of Vespa and then felt a redness right afterwards? Yes, exactly. I'm going to suggest it might be related. Yeah, it was just so wrong, and it didn't give me confidence, the facility and all that stuff. And then I had to go to Madrid, I think the following day? No. Yeah, 'cause I had this whole trip plan. Well, what do I do? Travel tip from Ari. What? Don't over plan. Yeah, but-- One or two cities stay, go when it's time to go. You plan it home, then you leave yourself in the wiggle room. That's just a travel tip from me. Well, I guess not. Under a plan. That would have been beneficial. I think one or two, and then pivot. Do you have one or two-- And have all those places you might want to check out, but if you don't get there, it's okay. So if you're going for two weeks, have two spots. You want to see what you're there, but if you don't get to one because you met some girl and you take some adventure, it's all right, I won't do it. So it's like, give yourself room to improv. Yeah, have a couple things you definitely want to do, a couple of things you wouldn't mind doing. I want to sit at a French coffee shop. But not, I want to do this one, this one, this one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You have to sit and have a shot from two to four. And then I'm going to, like, nah, nah, nah. But I mean, I had this flight. I had this flight coming. So, and I go, what am I supposed to be? They still wanted me to stay at the hospital. I go, can I leave? And they go, nah, like, the doctor wants you to stay here with a blah, and I'm like, oh, okay. And then I'm just like, what the fuck do I do? I got to go to Madrid tomorrow. This doctor's in nobody's doing. And then so after he gave me that diagnosis and they went away, I just, I took my hospital robe off and I put my clothes on and I like, look, I looked around. I broke out of the hospital. Yeah, I took my bracelet off and then I just, I broke out of the hospital. And I remember running with that, with that. Like an IV bag? Yeah, I was just running with a sled. No, I actually love it. I just, I stock up on a few for later. So I just remember busting out of those doors 'cause I'd been in there for so long. And I'm just like, just freedom. Like literally, I'm like, I haven't used my eyes before, you know, like, eh. And then I walked back to the hostel that I was staying at. And I told the guys what happened and all that shit and I'm like, it was crazy, dude. And so I said, buy to them and stuff. And then I got on a flight to Madrid the next day. And then I was in Madrid and it was just getting more and more swollen. Oh, what, he didn't give you anything for it? Uh, no, he just left before he could do it. Well, because he said, did you burn it on a scooter and then I'm a, I bounced. And you're like, fuck you, I'm outta here. Pretty much. Wow. I didn't want his prescription for a burnt leg on a scooter. Like, what's gonna give me? I was at Ecuador and I was getting a, I was having some pain in my shin, I think, or something like that. And the doctor was like, let me see your feet. He goes, oh, your toe. And my picky toe kind of goes under. It just kind of goes, it's like a bent over and it goes under and he goes, oh, it's, it's that. I'm like, oh, no, it's always been like that. That's not it. This, this pain is like new in my shin. And he goes, no, it's that. It's your foot is form wrong. And I was like, how do you explain to a doctor? Like, hey, dude, 100% is not that. Yeah. I've had that since I was three. So it's not that. I'm telling you this. Can you, can you give me another thing? That's what I'm like, we're gonna get out of here. Pretty much. It's guys an idiot. So that's why I bounced and then I got back to the hostel and then I think I did pay for a, I was trying to avoid this, but it was a lot of money to get a house call. So the hostel had a service where you had a doctor come to, it was like 300 euro or something. It was a lot. So I, I just ponied it up and then he prescribed some stuff and I was taking some pills and I think it was some ointment too or something. But it wasn't working. I don't think he prescribed me the right stuff. So I'm in Madrid and it's getting worse and worse now. Now it's so swollen, I can't wear my shoes anymore. No. Those basketball shoes I was wearing on the whole trip. I couldn't, they wouldn't fit. My foot wouldn't fit in the shoe. You try wearing cool instead of all lace stuff like an airboard? Like just not that title. Yeah, I kind of lose the way cool people do it. It was such a nutty professor foot. It wouldn't even fit in a cool, unlaced way. So I had to wear flip flops. Of what? I had to wear flip flops because it was just so swollen. With grandma foot? Yeah, with with a professor clump. Wow. So let me show you the progression. Yeah, I'm okay. This keeps getting grosser. This is previously on Faheem's fucked up foot. I just thought how it started, how it's going. That's right, previously on hug foot. Oh yes, me breaking out. Me right after I broke into the Roman hospital. God damn Faheem. You could have gone in such a different direction in your life. How so? You could have dropped the package in that trash can behind you if you know what I mean. Oh my god, yeah. Damn. Okay. Mama, do this for you. Look at this. Oh my god. You want a part? What the fuck? You think that's from a scooter? You got a Play-Doh foot. How gross is that? Your foot then looks like Bobby Lee's, I'm sure does now. That's a good point. Yeah. He definitely has a foot like that. Like if you cut that open. The pasta, what the fuck? Dude, that's dangerous. I thought I was gonna lose my leg. I mean, I know you're okay now, but I'm like, no, you have, just seeing that. I'm like, you gotta go that scene right then. Right now. This is, yeah. You're gonna lose your fucking foot. I swear to God when I was in Madrid and I'm having to wear flip flops. I thought I might lose this. And you're in another country. And I'm in another country. I don't trust this medical field here. Yes, exactly. I don't know how it works. There's a system back home. Right, those are their grandfather. Wow. So then what's-- And now it's climbing. It's like climbing up my leg. What the fuck is it? I don't know. And then the foot's getting way more, more swollen. Oh my God. And then, okay, here's okay. Then what is better than that one? Well, okay. So, yeah, I'm in Madrid and I have this fucked up flinchit. It's just getting worse and worse every day. And I'm in Madrid for three days, I think. It's hard to even enjoy the countries I'm in now, because-- We're sure. I'm in so much pain. I'm in hurts. Is it it? A little bit too, yeah. And then-- Is it a guy's cream or like gelato? I mean, like, hood, but it would just sort of like-- I wasn't able to enjoy a trip like this that much, because I'm like, it owes my foot. You're scared, too. So I'm in Madrid for three days, have as much fun as I can. I go to the Prado Museum. I do the touristy, and it's hard, because there's so much walking in Europe. Yeah, right. And I'm hobbling on this foot. I still want to explore. That's cool of you, though. You're willing to go out and do it still. A lot of people are like, I'm done. I'm just laying down. Yeah. But here's the thing. Hostels, they're not designed to be kicking it in. Yeah. It is weird when you see somebody like, hey, I'm traveling for two years or a year. I'm sick today. So I'm not going anywhere. I'm just going to stay in the bed in the hostel or just in the courtyard and just chill for two days and go over my notes or something. Yeah. But it's like, you're all alone. Everybody gets up and goes out. Yeah, you adventure. So do the Madrid for three days. And then I fly to Paris. And then-- so Paris was the one place where I was able to get couch surfing a host. So this guy's named Florian. Cool as dude, man. We still keep in touch a little bit on social media, like on Facebook and Instagram and all that. So he hosted me at his place. And it was awesome because he's a local. So he knows all the great food spots. In theory, when couch surfing is done right, it's amazing. I still wanted to do it when I got back from Asia. I was like, I need to host some people. I know that they need a place. And it would be cool-- let me show you a cool New York. And then I was like, ah, I want some stranger in my place. Yeah. Well, if not staying at the place, if you know someone in whatever city you're visiting, it's such a life hack. So what's there to do? What's cool here? It's tribal knowledge. They know everything. Try to-- Trip advisor isn't gonna know what I was in Austria isn't my friend and she was like let me take it to the cool burrito place We all go to and like an Austria. Yeah, it's a cool new burrito place. We go get burrito sip by the river everybody does it That I never would have done. Yeah, how would you place it open last year and a burrito and in Austria like really solid But it was just like everybody hip was there. That was a cooler part about it. Okay I mean, it's not like you know a Cali burrito, but like but they don't know any better I don't know any better. It's in the right ballpark. Let's just wrestle. That's a wrap. Yeah, it's probably It's like a chick and he's a rap and you don't have the heart to tell Oh, yeah, so luckily he has a doctor that my parents friend, you know, he goes Because my foot still fucked up and shit. He goes you should come see my my doctor. She's great. I forgot what her name is, you know I'm like, yeah, that'd be great man. Can you set up an appointment? It's like so he gets me an appointment. Oh And I see his doctor and this doctor is so good man She just she knows what it is. She Prescribes me an ointment I think and maybe a pill and I start and it's so cheap to man when I pay for it It's it's like 40 bucks and you have no insurance. So it's full price your pay Yeah, but it's like super affordable and then it starts working, dude And it's such a relief that it's finally It's like starts going down like two three days. It starts like deflating. Well, okay. I'm like thank God, dude It's going in the right direction instead of the wrong one. I want to see how many more photos I have of this this is Okay, here. I've got like two more. Oh, here we go. Here we go So this is me in the waiting room to see the the doctor in Paris. Yeah, I'm wearing my fat guy flip-flops Doesn't look quite as bad. Yeah, so the soul's your feet. Well, not gross. Yeah, that's true. So And then I mean, this is kind of pretty bad. Oh Yeah, God damn. So I think that's before I start taking the stuff, but that's like such a casual pose for near death I know I was like documenting it and stuff. Yeah, so it's fun to look back to have these photos. Yeah, really I forgot how bad it was because You hit me up by the show, you know, or I asked you, you know Like y'all in town doing the pod and all that stuff for the special you like oh do this one He's like giving stories about travel and I'm like, well, I remember my foot got fucked up And then so I had to dig up these photos because you know, I love it when I hear that I'm like perfect. Yeah, yeah Yeah, I go, my foot got else well, and you go perfect And then you go bring pics So I had the like I had the grip. Yeah, yeah, yeah, these cameras are even on you're gonna jack off to these what I leave You're like, yeah, yeah, just leave them with me. We're gonna punch him in and post and I just hear you calm when I leave so I had to dig these up. I had to like go into Facebook deep in my albums and then it's been so long since I've seen these photos of my feet And like as I'm watching them on this big screen with you right now. Yeah, I'm actually retroactively terrified Wow nice nice. I mean, I look at this and like I'm just so grateful to be walking right now, you know, what was it? I think I think it was an infection of some sort From I think it's from a bug bite from that first hostel in Rome. This is my hypothesis. Wow I think the the doctor in Paris thought so too, but right? How does that happen? Would you write any scooters though? No, you motherfucker Are you friends with that Italian dog there? What is it keep going off? Did you read any scooters? It's good there. It's good there. It's good there. So then I took the medication and then eventually I got back to normal. I got my life back. Oh, yeah Look, I'm wearing shoes again. Yeah, they're tiny again. I can almost do it almost get my feet around Wow But how harrowing, huh? Do you forget massive anxiety? Did you say the wrong thing at the party? You know you didn't say the right thing. Should I say the wrong thing? Should you tell your boss that joke and they didn't laugh right away and then where they did laugh at a second guest Would they like saying do I want this guy around? Let's get back to the episode Did you say you really didn't enjoy Italy much at all? Uh Well Italy I had a few days before it happened though. I had that wand and that kind of No, and also it wasn't fully blown until like it started hurting a ton in Madrid Yeah, and then the tail end of Paris wasn't as bad because I was getting better But Madrid was fucking terrible. Yeah, and like the day before when I was in Italy That was awful too because I went to the hospital and then I was sleeping with that wailing guy and just being definitely dead Let's hope that no, I'm just gonna so And just being in this hospital like a 1950s hospital in Rome and that was scary too. Yeah, because you go What's gonna happen to me? I'm a long way from home. Am I gonna die here? It is right because you realize how much you trust your own medical even though you don't trust American medical when you're gone You're like that's all I want. Yeah, I know what it is first bad is sometimes people talk about American medicine and all this stuff You don't want that I'll tell you you don't want that. Yeah Damn Did you um All right, well that was good That's hilarious would you go back there where Italy Yeah, I did go back I did yeah, okay, oh my parents That's kind of good like revenge on that trip kind of oh, yeah, oh, yeah, so like I went to Rome right and then the second time for this time. Well the first time I went you know, and then all this should happen My I was planning for one of the days to go to the Vatican. I wanted to check that out Uh-huh. That was part of the reason to go to the trip Like I just want it to be a cool place to check out. Yeah, case of place. Yeah, case it, you know Yeah, pick up some you know notes a lot of gold. Is there I think Okay, yeah, they got deep pockets man, and uh, but the foot was all fucked up So I couldn't go to the Vatican and it sucked because I'm like, oh, I guess I'll never get to go to the Vatican And then my parents were doing a Europe trip and they go do you want to come? I'm like, yeah, sure So I got to do it when I went with my parents. So that was kind of nice That's also not bad because also like it wasn't like you weren't gonna be fucking at the Vatican I'm like now I can't fuck yeah, my mom and dad are here I gotta do the Vatican the lame way That was gonna do so many drugs You think it's a great fuck spot. Yeah, the treat like the Vatican like Coachella Yeah, like I go to the Vatican. I take shrooms Uh-uh, it's like yeah, yeah, it's like burning man like we all fuck each other. We're on open relationships We fucking say Peter Square wave the thing with the box with the incense coming or whatever, you know Yeah, and and if you're in the way, they're so mad. They're just like I kind of swing it at you It is like read it to us really. Yeah, what is what is that smud? You know the religious thing of it? No I don't it's sort of like fajitas or it's like Benihana. It's very showy, huh? Yeah, you just bring it out To our mold. Yeah, I just it'll still be hot. Don't be currently cooking finish the cooking then bring it um That's cool Fun. Do you still travel now you still go anywhere? No, I mean, I feel like with our jobs of standup. Yeah, it's kind of a hybrid So I mean, I do get to see some cool places because standup takes me there Like I got to do Amsterdam. Did have you done Tumler out there? Tumers. Yeah. Yeah, it's dope Yeah, it feels like a club in the states. Yeah. Yeah exactly Amsterdam the Netherlands, but specifically Amsterdam is probably the most like America in Europe non-immiglish Europe The most like American comedy. It's booming. Yeah, full of just-do regular standup It's weird how much they love just standard American comedy and you don't have to switch anything or port anything over Cuz they have boom Chicago out there too. Uh-huh, cuz there's it second city which is improv and then I think once you get to a high level There's they have a yeah. Yeah. It's called boom Chicago like Sudakis came out of there. Oh, I think some some other but not the one over there Sudakis came out of Amsterdam. Jordan Peele was out there too. I think they start at the once in Chicago and then They go to warmen to get transferred. Other kind of like when you be it's like the big leagues boom Chicago is like big They don't let anybody do boom Chicago Okay, yeah, yeah, so it's boom Chicago and Amsterdam, but you just think why why an Amsterdam and then Tumler's a great club I got to be out there for like a week. It's cool. Here's my advice to you to anybody who gets a it's a gig out there Something like that, you know you occasionally will get a festival somewhere. Oh, yeah, yeah, you know, and you're so all right They're flying me to Switzerland me and Morris and Jessica Michelle. What's the festival out there? There was a ink There was a French festival in Matru and there you were like like, let's do some English speaking. Let's try some English speaking, one show out of the-- - How was it? - Did you show that? - Great, I met Louise Gola 'cause he was there if they had a South African contingency and then there's me, Morsi, you know? - Oh, good, yeah, yeah. - Jessica Michelle, Kevin Iso, and Micah from the comms you should know from Chicago. Micah, fuck, I haven't seen him so long. It was great, it was awesome. But here's my advice. Take, great, they're flying from the 3rd to the 7th, right? Can you fly me back on the 14th? - Oh, really? - Before they even get a ticket, I'd like to fly back on the way, and then finish your gigs, go around, and I'm like, sure, no skin of our backs. - 'Cause it cost the same to them. - We're not putting you up, or can you fly me back from Berlin? 'Cause I'm gonna go from there, take a train. Sure, okay. - That's a good tip, dude. - Yeah, yeah, you're already out there. - Yeah. - If you're not wasting a day of travel, you're already out there. - Man, I should have done that. I've done the Vodafone Fest in Ireland, I don't know, twice. I should have piggybacked some other shit while I was out there. - piggybacked some other shit, you get other gigs to pay you. - Yeah. - And they're paying for the flight. And also just like, well, let me go to cliff some more while I'm there, let me just go do something. - Yeah. - Two days, whatever you can spare. - Anyway. - I went to the Guinness Factory, that was neat. - That is cool. I didn't go. I thought it was lame, I thought it was real. - Really? - Guinness is a Guinness, I get that fall. But now I realize it's better in Ireland. - Can you tell the difference? - They can. - They say that though. - They do and they're dumb, they say a lot of things, like they want to be free, but they really want to be ruled. Where else do you want to go? - Travel wise, Japan. - Japan, a lot of people are saying that. - It's just so different. - A lot of people are saying that. - Because everything you see is kind of a shade of Western society. I think Japan is just fascinating. And like, here's a completely different way to do it. And fucking excelling, dude. - Right. - You know what I mean? Seven Elevans have dope food. And I'm happy with the Seven Elevans stuff here in America. No, I'm just kidding. - It's a key toast? - I mean a big bite. - I won't turn my nose at a Seven Elevans big bite. - I've eaten many. - Yeah, I haven't had one. - It's been a while, but I haven't. - Like when I haven't planned my day very well, and I'm in a pinch, I'm all good at Seven Elevans. I got it, I just got to put some food in me. - That's nice. - I was telling somebody else, 'cause like New York, you have so many food options, just, it's like a video game here. 'Cause there's so much walking, your tank is empty. - Just get us like a go. - And there's a slice of go. - There's a slice of go. - Oh, go, go, go, go, go. Boop, boop, boop. And then you're able to-- - So you think I just warmed up a little. Anything fresh? - Yeah. - You like this one came out two minutes ago. - Oh, give me that to warm it up. Let's go. - Yeah. - I gotta go. - Yes, everyone is standing with business hosts, just like scarfing down some food, and they keep on walking. There's none of that in LA. - Get your crust in there and something. - Yeah. Just eating over a trash can. There's none of that quick eating culture in LA. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, I mean, that's why I do a big bite sometimes. So Japan-- - Japan, that'd be cool. - And then-- - Australia, I'd like to know. - Never been. - Never been. - Oh, there's gigs there for sure. - Really? - Oh, yeah. Melbourne, Sydney, Sydney, the Congress, or Sydney, might be the best. - Are you breaking even or what? I mean, you would at right now, at this point in your career. - Well, when I went, I was below where you are now. However, there were-- when I started going, however, they were almost no one going. People go now. - So-- - What are the big things in the bill? - They were saying, "Realza, I was one of the only guys at-- - Who's go? - Yeah, so the main credit-- I saw it all at the comedy store in Sydney. You know how they have like everybody in the past? - Yeah. - The main credit was from America. - Really? - Yeah, like that-- wow, welcome. And now it's like, that's no longer-- - No one gives a shit. - It's no longer that. - No one gives a shit. It is very cool, though. And there's also parts I want to see like, I think actually this time I'm going to go to Canberra, I've never been. Perth is really fun and interesting, but it's so far away from everything else. Cans in the north, I went-- and I want to go hiking, or my friend told me about it. I went mushroom picking in the gold coast, eating them right there. It's such a clean mushroom high. They're not dried out, it's so-- - So, wait, they're like the magic mushrooms? - Yeah. - And you usually-- - Day after a fucking rain, if I can pick them off patties. - And then, are they as potent as ones you would take here instead? - No, 'cause they're not dried out, so it's like still got a lot of water. And moisture on them. - Oh, so the drying out makes it more potent? - Per wait. - Oh, okay, okay. - But same stuff, but if you freeze dry it, it's like a shrink wrapping up your clothes. It weighs the same, it's just this much space for this much space, so yeah. So you just have to eat more of 'em, but it was so fun, I'll show you the rules. They're also great laffers. - Well, they have a great piece of shit, worst coke in the world, literally the worst coke in the world. And they do more of it than anywhere else. - 'Cause it's so bad, they gotta get enough into it. - That's exactly right. You see it on Australian anywhere else? Like, you got coke? What the fuck? This is over 4% pure. - Is it just so hard to get good coke out there? - I think the story was that a cop's made a big raid, and then they said that we got two million dollars with a coke, and it should have been like 50 grand. But because they said that, then that became the price. And so you can't get it out there, which I don't-- you don't import coke, do you? - Maybe you do. - I really don't know. - Yeah, they gotta import it, right? - Yeah, they gotta import it, I guess. So like, maybe it's hard to get there, until they just cut it to shit. They just get so powdered up. - Is fentanyl a thing out there? - I don't think so. I think it's just in America. - Legitimally-- - I said-- - You said-- - I thought I heard Biden went to, like, when he met with China, he was like, hey, we can discuss everything else. You gotta stop with the fentanyl. And they're like, we can talk about it. Which I always thought it came from the cartels, but I guess they're saying it's-- - Pharmaceuticals? - Yeah. - All through Europe, though. - You get powder in Europe, that's clean. You don't even think twice about it. It might be a different drug, but it's-- - It's not a lase of fentanyl. - It's not a lase of fentanyl. - Man, they're fucking us with TikTok and fentanyl. Two fronts, dude. - I like how they added the STEM tab on TikTok. Like, people in America are gonna click on engineering videos. - Oh, really? - Yeah, 'cause they were getting all this shit that, like, TikTok is just rotting the youth's brains. It's all like-- - Yeah, so then now it's like-- - Shakes learning. - Shakes jumping up and down. And then they just added a STEM tab. Like, no, we have a learning. It's like engineering, science. I don't know what that T stands for, but then engineering-- - Engineering math. - Math and math, man. - Nice. - Train it trans. - Yeah. - Do you have any travel tips in general? - A general travel tip. Like, I just had, for you-- - Yeah, you're just good. Just, like, have them book a later travel date from a different location so I can maximize it. - And also, don't over-plan. That was an element for you. - Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Don't do too much. - Do you mind me? - Oh, that's a good travel plan. - Well, how about this? How are hostels? - How are hostels? They're good. - Yeah. - They're utilitarian, you know? - Yeah. - I've been there with, I've been in a hospital with a 65-year-old Belgian to hung, he was cool. It's for the youth, but not necessarily-- - But it's, don't view it as like, oh man, it sucks, I'm with so many other people. There's a time in your life to be doing it. And you actually get to meet other cool people and say, yeah, yeah, you don't want to be in a hotel that young and backpacking. You don't want to be in a nice shower and have a nice bed. But I could meet no one. I've never met anyone in a hotel. - Yeah, a hotel's for once you're like, I've met very, very long-- - Don't want to be anybody new. - In hostels. - Yeah. Well, for him, the new special is called-- - House money, bro. - House money. - To go and spend out guys. - House money. - Check it out. It's on my YouTube channel. - Check it out. - It's for you guys. It's free, I need this. - So I will tell you, as always, when somebody will help their specials, if you go leave a comment on their special, watch it for sure, because for him is one, legitimately, you are one of the best comments around. - Yeah, that's nice, thanks, man. - Yeah, and in fact, when people said LA comedy is dead, I said, no, it's not, and it's a constant argument. - Really? - And they're like, what do you mean? Well, it's full of people, I say, there's the fahem of six years ago. The guy nobody knew was just crushing. - Yeah. - There's new ones. - Yeah. - LA is not dead. - You know what? - Just 'cause six people left, they might've made room for what I always say, the fahem of six years ago. Just these crushers that are nobody's. - I mean, I feel like I'm still the fahem of six years ago, sometimes. - No, you've got a name now. - Really? - Yeah, I do a bit about you and Colin Torell. - Oh yeah. - And then depending on who claps, I say, oh, Ruben, that is nice. - I guess 'cause you live with yourself for so long, you don't, you still feel like that comic nobody ever cares about, or, you know, the like, crushing and obscurity, 'cause you'll just, you'll do well a lot, and then you don't feel the needle move that much, and you're like, does it slow? - Yeah. - Well, I will tell you, when you go see House Money, leave a comment 'cause it helps with the algorithm, just describe fahem's disgusting ankles, just be like worse ankles and comedy, his ankles are worse than you know. - Yeah, roast my feet. - Yeah, roast his feet in the comments, and then enjoy it also. - Sure. - Just promise you won't jack off to my nutty professor. - Definitely, and if you jacked off, say the experience of jacking off to his nutty professor feet. - Yeah, and if you do jack off, at least leave a super thanks. - Yeah, let me see, oh yeah, give 'em some, guys, the way we do these now, I should say this too, is we're paying for these ourselves, there's no comedy central and HBO, and Netflix paying for most of 'em. So if you want, I get it, now everybody's got money, but if you want us to keep making these, give two bucks, give five bucks, give 20 bucks, depending on what you got, but there's no reason not to give at least one dollar, no matter how broke you are. And then they'll make their money back, and then keep doing it again. You can get more great comedy. Also, if you're watching this episode, and you have your own travel stories of Italy, or hospitals and other countries, leave that as a comment, subscribe, and yeah, that's it. - Nice man, thanks for having me. - Yeah, always great to see you, buddy. - Oh, and thanks for the advice on self-releasing a special again. - Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm hoping it works. This is gonna see you're so funny, this is gonna see you. - Thanks man, thanks. - All right, bye everybody, until next week. - Well, that's the episode, everybody.
