Episode #67- Beach Boys Bracket Madness!

What was it though, you know, uh, summer paradise sold a thousand copies when it came out, I think yeah Yeah, I mean if if Nate was alive at the time it would have sold two thousand I would have been going door to door, hockin that thing Hey everyone, my name is Jake and welcome to the 67th episode of Good timing As always in this podcast we're gonna be talking about one of our favorite bands the Beach Boys and today We have a really fun and interesting discussion ahead of us as we're going to be doing our very first Beach Boys bracket battle so um in the spirit of March badness which started this past week I thought it would be a fun idea to match up some of the best Beach Boys songs in our opinion Against each other in a bracket and then boat as a group on each match up to see which songs advanced to the next round So like the real March madness tournament our bracket consists of 64 teams or in this case songs and These songs were chosen based off of our previous draft episodes Um, where we selected some of our favorite songs from different periods of the band's history um in addition to this I made sure that each studio album minus party in the Christmas album We're represented with at least one song in the bracket with the maximum of four songs allowed per record so um, lastly to make our bracket more unpredictable and challenging the first round matchups are going to be completely randomized so There's no number one seed or 16 seed in this tournament each song has an equal chance to compete against each other And that means that we're likely going to have some really easy matchups in the first round But also some really difficult ones where we have to eliminate some of our favorite songs early on so Joining me tonight for our bracket battle we have our usual crew of Riley mat and Nate as well as our returning guest Steve Um, who has his own amazing YouTube channel the Beach Boys basement So as always I'm happy to have you guys here and I'm very curious to see which songs advanced to further send our tournaments so Um in the interest of time we're going to go pretty rapid fire through this first round of our bracket So that we have more time for discussion and debate in the following rounds So how this opening round will work is I will read off each individual matchup And then each of us will have up to 15 or 20 seconds to make our vote and share any brief comments we want to make Then at the end of the round or review which songs advanced and also take some time to discuss any of the upsets or results that surprised us before moving on to round two so Um without further ado, I'm now going to hit generate on our bracket and we will find out what our first-round matchups look like All right, so I just generated our bracket. So we're gonna go through these again pretty quickly I will read off the matchup and then whatever order you guys want to go in you can share your vote again for this first round Try to keep it limited on time like 15 to 20 seconds each and then we'll see whoever gets the majority vote is the song that advances around too So our first matchup in the round of 64 is Deirdre from sunflower versus breakaway So any of you guys want to share your first vote on that breakaway All right That's tough um It is probably my favorite proof song, but I think I'm gonna have to go with breakaway Well, I think breakaway already advanced I This would have been a close one for me. I think I would have given the slight edge to Deirdre just because again I love the song. It's one of the highlights in the catalog for me But I also think breakaway is a highlight in the catalog too So this is a tough one, but I'm totally cool with breakaway advancing here So we will move breakaway on a Nate. Did you vote or no? Yeah, I said Deirdre Okay, so it's three to two. All right. Well, oh well All right matchup number two we have heroes and villains the smile mix versus all summer long Oh All summer long Yeah, I'm probably gonna go with all summer long. I've never been the biggest heroes and villains guy and I do quite like all summer long These are turning out to be tougher. Yeah, this is actually a really good matchup. Yeah, I'll go with all summer long though Oh, yeah, I thought these would be the uh The other ones oh um I've also been longer ready advanced to three of us say I think so, but I'll say I'll say I'll say all summer long. It's really close though Yeah, for me. Oh, this yeah, this is a tight one. I feel like it's almost like this is one where like you're almost comparison Comparing like Apple store oranges because they're very different songs I feel like represent different parts of the band in terms like what you appreciate I oh boy, that is a tough one. I guess I would have I guess I would have went with all summer long But it's very narrow. I mean, I really love the heroes and villains Especially the smile one so Okay, I'm gonna say no Jake. This is one that's probably gonna be a surprising for a lot of people Yeah, yeah, you know on another day. I might say heroes and villains because I love the middle section I think it's a great song so Um, all right match number three speaking of comparing two different eras. We have albedeys nice versus I'll get around or I get around I'm sorry. I get around oh Yeah, I get uh, I love albedeys nice, but I'm gonna go I get around as well. I the same thing I love albedeys nice, but I get around as too freaking iconic to not vote for I get around is is just great You can't change anything on that song. Not that you can do with albedeys nice, but like it's it's It's can't yeah I honestly got to go with albedeys nice not to be a contrarian um, but but that song is just so comforting and soothing to me and And I just really adore that song so I think I gotta go with albedeys nice Yeah, it is a great song Yeah, that's a tough one for me because I love albedeys nice I mean one of the highlights of the catalog right there, but it's like I just have a hard time voting against I get around but Um, all right our next match up is she knows me too well from today versus my dian Uh, for me this is pretty easy. I love my dian. I think it's a great song one of the highlights of the later 70s catalog But for me, she knows me too well is one of the best ballots they ever did Um, so that's that's a pretty easy one for me. She knows me too well. Not even close She knows me too well. My dian's my favorite M.I.U. But she knows you too well is one of the best they ever did so yeah Yeah, I agree no comparison Honestly, my dian by a long shot I the The melody just moves me more than the melody on she knows me too well that to me She knows me too well is really interesting like historically like we talked about what the meeting could have been when we talked about the today stuff Um, and it's cool like with the studio experimentation stuff how they were hitting the screwdriver on the microphone stand and things like that But it's kind of don't hate me for this, but sometimes it's like it's a little plotting and my dian to me is just very very moving I think you hear that new mix that that was probably was leaked with the sense I prefer it You can't confirm nor deny All right, our next match up. This is and this is kind of a doozy for round one because I feel like either of these songs could go really deep in the tournament sail on sailor versus till I die Oh, man I'll start us off again. Um, I will go with this is brutal the sail on sailor I'd easily advanced multiple rounds But I'm gonna go with till I die because I think it's such an emotional and moving song I think it's one of Brian's greatest work definitely one of Brian's best post pet sound songs And it's one that like lyrically always gets me. I just think it's a very moving song and one that you can relate to if you've ever been depressed For an adark place. So that's my boat, but love you sail on sailor Totally till I die for me too. I think It's just a masterpiece 10 out of 10 can't get better than that song So on sailors cool, but till I die is like one of the greatest things ever in So for me Holland is my favorite album. I love sail and sailor, but I'm gonna have to go with till I die because I agree very moving very haunting and also I think lyrically one of the best songs Brian ever wrote because he wrote the lyrics too So yeah till I die I literally tossed a coin and it came up till I die I'm happy with either one, but I think I'd give the edge to till I die anyway. You know, I think um I don't know. I think there is there's actually much better on Holland than sail on sailor and uh I think till I die is actually arguably the best song on surf so I think I'm gonna have to go with till I die That was a unanimous till I die. I'm pretty sure. Wow All right next up we have cabin essence Versus when I grew up to be a man Um, I really like cabin essence. It's grown on me a lot over the past few years I think it has some really amazing production on it um. I really love the uh, you know The outro with Mike's vocal and you know over and over the croak prize I think it's a really well-produced song But when I grow up is one that I just absolutely love um think it has some of their best lyrics Very moving song especially now, you know, like looking back and you know how old the members are now and looking back after all these years I just think it's a very relatable and moving song and that's where I'm gonna go with I'm gonna go with when I grow up cabin essence um When I grow up is actually one of my lesser favorite songs on today um still like it but I'm not going to go with cabin essence on this one I'll go with cabin essence as well. I you know, I still find it or I I'm used to it now, but it's it's so jarring when it goes into the who ran the iron horse bit That's always bothered me a little bit, but it's so interesting in the bits of it the probably every part of it is so beautiful In itself I got to go with cabin essence I'm gonna go with when I grow up to be a man um I'm kind of with j cabin essence has grown on me over the years, but when I grow up to the man I always thought was like a great dichotomous song of like it's kind of upbeat, but it also has those melancholic lyrics And I just I find it pretty haunting The underneath right Yeah, this one is so tough for me. This one's extremely hard because like music we're speaking and production wise I really would normally just based off the song give Cabiness and the slight edge. However, you know I bring it up every time the song comes up but I'm just always so moved when I hear Mike perform this song these days in his mid now mid 80s and for me that moment is always one of the highlights of the Beach Boys concerts since they've added that back into the set and for me that moment is so priceless that I've just got to go with when I grow up. Yeah another one I feel like we're like the matchup we're comparing two very different sides of the band you know you have the something from today versus something that's like deep and brine's kind of smile era so tough comparison but I would have been happy with either of those advancing so. So which one did we have three and three for that? So when I grow up advanced off of your vote Nate. So. Okay. Yeah. All right our next matchup I have a feeling I think we have all like both of these songs but I have a feeling this one's gonna be pretty lopsided. It's Serfen Safari versus Let Him Run Wild. Let Him Run Wild for me not even the contest. I love Serfen Safari. I think it's one of their best early songs you know it definitely shows the early appeal of the band you can see why a lot of people thought they could do great things in the future but let them run wild. I mean it's just one of Brian's best ballads with some of the best production and best arrangement in the catalog so easy. Different Safari for me. To me one of my favorite like rock and roll songs ever and my all-time favorite song to play in guitar I could just play that song in guitar all day and have a blast so I love that song. No brainer for me let him run wild. Let him run wild. Yeah let him run wild. Serfen Safari is fun but Let Him Run Wild is great. Yes the guess you know I'm waiting for you. Girl that alone like puts it for me. All the back of rack stuff and it to the back how back it. I know. Yeah. Brian would want us to vote Serfen Safari because he hates his vocal on Let Him Run Wild. Well guess what? Sometimes artists in my opinion are wrong on their takes and this is what I'm hoping for. All right our next match up this is another kind of a doozy the trader versus forever. So I really love both songs as you guys know the trader for me is an easy highlight of Holland. I'd probably rank it first or second on the whole album. One of Carl's best songs and then forever is a Dennis highlight. I mean it's just absolutely beautiful ballad. I think it's as good as some of Brian's best work and highlight of sunflower for me. So this is a really tough one. I guess I'm going to go with forever by a smidge but I do really love the trader and if it was matched up against some of these previous songs I definitely would have picked the trader so my votes forever. You're going with Carl's arguably Carl's best versus Dennis's best. I'm going to forever though I really listened to it the other night and I was like and I knew it was great but I kind of forgot how great it actually was forever. It's even though I think the trader should have not been matched up against this one should have been matched up against her. Yeah very tough for me because I really do enjoy both songs but I'll probably get the edge to forever because I think the trader maybe is technically a more complex song forever moves me more. Yeah I agree. It's really hard for me but I'm going to go with the trader because it's a little more complex and I love that second section but taking it softly. I'll do the trader. Yeah like you guys all said this one's really tough and this is another one where I was initially leaning towards the trader because it's it's got a great groove and really cool sounds in it but I'm going to have to go with forever because I sang it at my wedding and I would feel wrong if I didn't choose it for that reason so forever. It's John Stamos's best song. No I'm kidding. Yeah and this is how we see Jake crash out. You know how in the trader they say hi I'm saying bye. All right up next we have here she comes from Carl and the passions versus little bird from friends so I'm going to go with and you know what I'll let you want you guys go first. I've been doing for years. It's not even close. Yeah no definitely here she comes easily. I appreciate little bird for what it is. It was a great stepping stone for Dennis even though no Brian helped a lot but here she comes I think is incredible. Not even close. Yeah I agree not even close for me. Little bird for me. I think little bird has a really cool like psychedelic kind of ethereal like mystique to it and here she comes as a cool jam but to me little bird is like a masterpiece not to overuse that word but I love little bird. Steve yeah I wish these two had been matched against till I die and sail on sailor. It would have made life a lot easier but here she comes is definitely the call on that one. Yeah there I mean I know my boat doesn't matter because it's already advanced but they're really close for me like there's different elements of each song I like like little bird I feel like is the more beach boys sounding song it's got more of the harmonies like you said it's a great early Dennis contribution you got some really cool lyrics I love the use of the cellos during it really like psychedelic production but then here she comes this is like great early 70s like jam song so they're they're really tight I guess this is one I feel like it depends on the day you ask me but I guess I'd go here she comes but little bird is definitely a big highlight of the band's late 60s period for me. I'm all right up next we have from there to back again which is the only song from that's why God made the radio in the bracket versus the night was so young this is not really much of a contest for me I do really love from there to back again I think it's a very moving song but I am going to go with the night was so young because it's just a highlight of love you for me and I think it's one of Brian's best belts so no fucking brainer the night was so young night was so young night was so young night was so young I was waiting for the contrarian made answers like I'm I'm feeling from there to back again I'm feeling the Joe time is bad said no one but nature that's what you I'm saying that's what you were expecting from me yeah all right up next oh boy this is this is an interesting one we've got California girls versus in my room um California girls all right it's in my room oh god that's hard I'm gonna give the edge California girls is more complex but in my room moves more so I'll give the votes in my room I'll give my votes so we can have this come down to Steve I'm gonna go with well maybe it won't come down to Steve you two of you guys already voted for in my room right yeah yeah I'm I'm probably gonna go in my room for the same reason that you guys said I just think it's a more emotionally moving song and um it's one that I'm always happy to hear I love California girls I think it's you know again one of Brian's best songs best production great lyrics from Mike one of those just timeless summer songs but um in my room is one that like really emotionally moves me and it's one I remember listening to um you know during a rough period in my life and also one of the first songs I listen to after Brian passed as well so I have a very close connection with that one so in my room for me yeah my initial thought was California girls I've that intro I absolutely is one of my very favorite pieces of music but in my room is more moving it speaks to me more so I go in my room I think the intro kind of hard carries the song yeah yeah yeah yeah up next we have this another one where it's two very different areas of the band we have the little girl I once knew the standalone single versus long promised road from surfs up um this is an easy one for me long promised road I think it's arguably Carl's best song I probably put it between this one and the trader just amazing production on this really a ethereal sound to it I love that haunting bridge section you know like the trail starts at dawn part so cool and the fact that Carl played all the instruments on this including that real heavy guitar solo this is just an awesome song that really you know showed how much the band had evolved since the early days so long promise road for me yeah this one's kind of this one's pretty easy for me long promised road the little girl I once knew is always a song that I've respected more than like loved but I love long promised road long promise road it's a hard call but I'll go long promised road I'll do that probably little girl I once knew all right up next we have Marcella versus I can hear music uh this one oh I'll let you guys go first in this one I'm gonna have to think about this one a little bit Marcella Marcella okay I really like both I'd actually probably give this like a second here music but I do really like both I'd go with Marcella just because it's an original that that was kind of my line of thinking too as much as I love I can hear music and I think the production on it is incredible you know I think Carl did an amazing job with that I'm both the production and the lead vocal um Marcella is an original and it is a really damn good rock or whether it's the studio version or that live version that really kicks ass on them in concert so I'm gonna go Marcella just because I love the groove to it and I just think it shows another side of the band you know it's a more like rolling stones kind of early 70s rocker vibe so up next we have two that I know Riley really loves a lot so be curious see what you say here although I think I know what you're gonna say. "Card Crazy Cutie vs. Your Summer Dream." So I'm gonna, I'll start here. Since we talked about it way back when I, "Card Crazy Cutie" has really grown to me a lot. Riley really helped me come to appreciate that song. I think it's a super catchy duop kind of flavored song, but "Your Summer Dream" is just absolutely gorgeous. I think it's a haunting, haunting ballad, really moving lyrics. I love the script back production with just the guitar and Brian's vocal. It's one that just always gets me whenever I listen to it. So for me, this is easily your summer dream, but "Card Crazy Cutie" is definitely a bop. So. I think I have to give the edge to your summer dream, but not an easy choice for me. I really wish "Card Crazy Cutie" going up against something else because I do really like it a lot, but "Your Summer Dream" is just gorgeous. So it gets my vote. I'm really surprised how difficult this first round is turning out to be. Yeah, Jake, was this supposed to make it easier? It was a whole ratchet. I love "Card Crazy Cutie" but it's got to be "Your Summer Dream." "Card Crazy Cutie" for me. Not disappointed in hearing that. All right, up next we have "Wild Honey" versus "It's OK." I really like it. It's OK. I think it's a really fun song. Definitely one of the highlights of "15 Big Ones" and in my opinion, the song that deserved more to be a hit single. But I'm going to go with "Wild Honey," which I just think is a real, soulful rock banger from "Wild Honey," the album. Just great, soulful vocals and Carl, love the R&B sound of this. I love the-- Oh, mama, she's sweet. It's just got such a great groove to it. So definitely "Wild Honey" for me. It's OK. Wish is it was "Wild Honey." I'm going "Wild Honey." "Wild Honey" for me too, though I do quite like "It's OK." You know, it's closer than I thought, because I mean, I'm not that big on the studio version of "Wild Honey," that I think, in the same way everybody else is. I still like the song, but I must prefer the live version with "Blondie" on vocals and the guitar solo too, really ribs. But I'm still going to go "Wild Honey," but I think "It's OK" does kind of put up some sort of fight, at least with me. It's OK all the way for me. Rocker. I don't think he'd be mad at me for saying this. But one time Christian told me that "Wild Honey" is like one of the only beach boys songs he doesn't care for, because he said it doesn't go anywhere from where it starts. And once he said that, I kind of knew exactly what he meant. Like, it's kind of just the same thing over and over again. And I think "It's OK" is one of the catchiest songs they ever did. So I got to go with "It's OK." I agree with you on that a little bit, Nate. I think the dynamics work a lot better live. I'm not song, and it does in the studio. Yeah, it's definitely one of their best live songs. Well, our only 15 big ones representation has been eliminated. So up next, we have our only smiley smile representation, Little Pad versus Time to Get Alone. Really like both songs. Little Pad is a real chill, kind of like laid back, tropical Hawaiian themed song that I really liked a lot. But Time to Get Alone is a big highlight for me. And I think it's one of Brian's best waltzes. I love the lyrics to it. That bridge that I know Matt really loves to. The Archie Glad we finally got away. Really love that too. So Time to Get Alone for me. It's not particularly close on this one. Little Pad, Little Pad. So simplicity wins out for me. Little Pad. All right. I love the Hawaiian guitar on it. It's just-- Do it. Little Pad for me too. Damn. Time to Get Alone. It's just one of the highlights of the whole second half of the '60s for their catalog for me. But-- Up next, we have two songs that-- and with the poster fees, we have Darlin and Good Diamond. So obviously, we named the podcast after Good Diamond. So we have to like the song. I think it's a really great track from LA. I definitely want to highlight to that album for me. It kind of has-- it almost sounds like the band kind of throwing back to their early '60s ballad sound. You know, on songs like Surf for Girl, which I can appreciate. But for me, Darlin is a all-time catalog highlight for them. I just think it's a great rocker. It's the highlight of Wild Honey. And it's one of Carl's best vocals. So Darlin easily. But I do really like Good Diamond. Yeah, Darlin. Darlin. Darlin. Oh, I have to say Good Diamond, not only because it's the name's sake of the podcast. But I think, honestly, I would put it for sure. And they like top-- I don't know-- top five best representations of their harmony singing. I think the harmonies are just so lush on Good Diamond that it's just unbelievable. So that's my vote. And the final-- Definitely. --the show. The podcast will now be called Darlin from this point forward. Darlin, a beach boy's podcast. So all right, our next matchup is interesting because this is like two songs where they were kind of throwing back to their earlier sounds. So the two songs we have are-- Do it again and get you back. Oh, thank god. I thought it was going to be a different-- OK, get you back. Get you back. I have to go with that one. You get to-- We know what maps voting. So I'm sorry. I just never cared for Do it again. Get you back. I will go with-- I will go with Do it again. I do really like Get You Back. And I think it's-- again, a highlight of the Beach Boys '85 album. I like the production on it. I like how it's kind of harkening back to the earlier sound and you've got the drums which are kind of like attribute to Dennis. But I do really love Do it again. I just think it's a great melody. I love the bridge section. And it's interesting because I feel like I've heard gripes about Mike's vocal on both of these songs where I get you back. Some people complain it's too nasally, which I definitely can hear a little bit. And then I do it again. I think it kind of lacks a little bit of energy. I do come back to live versions of Do it again more than the studio version, to be honest. But I am going to go with Do it again just because I think it's a great late 60s song from them. So Do it again for me too. I think it's the best of concert opening song ever. For me, as soon as-- if I'm at a show up there, as soon as I hear that bass drum hit of the Do it Again beat, it's like all the cares and all the worries in the world just disappear. And it's like, all right, I'm at a beach boy show. So just such great memories associated with that song. If I was trying to compile a best of the Beach Boys album, it would be Do it again. If I was going to go with the song that I'd really probably listen to, I'd be get you back. And so I'm going to get you back. Yeah. Oh, damn. All right. I will do it again for it. So I was so confident Steve was going to advance Do it again. I'd already clicked it in the music. Do it. That was a woj bomb, holy shit. And you knew I wasn't going to vote for it. Yeah, I was expecting Steve to be like, yeah, I like it. But it's OK, but I prefer Do it again. Now that 85 album has really come out along way in my estimation. There's a lot of stuff I really love. And I can understand the criticism of it. But if I'm going with what I like, it's get you back. Woj bomb Steve went with get you back. And I think it wasn't get you back the first song they released written by Mike and Terry. Or was rock and roll the rest of the first. Yeah, no. Yeah, it was. We don't come rock and roll back. It was get you back. Because rock and roll the rest of it was 86, right? Yeah, it's a good way to start as a song running partnership. It was the first it was the first real Beach Boys record since 1980, right? Yeah, there's space in the sky. But that you had East meets West. And the West. Meets West. I mean, but there wasn't a real Beach Boys record until I mean, chasing the sky was each boys doing a vocal on somebody else's record really. And it sounds like it. All right, up next we have two very different songs. We have California saga Big Sur from Holland versus Lahaina Loha from Summer in Paradise. I know for you guys, maybe this isn't that close, but I am actually going to get my vote to Lahaina Loha. I actually. You are you are you out of your mind? I like I listen. I like I really like California saga Big Sur, but I really love Lahaina Loha. I think it's a really nice song. Yeah, I'm really listening. I like the song. I really do. I would say I like the feel goes version even more probably if it was up against that, maybe I would probably would have that version, but I'm shocked on their own. I'm going to go with Lahaina Loha just because I think it's a very moving song. I think the production other than the frickin snare, I think the production is honestly pretty nice on this one. I think it's a great melody. I think it's very moving that this is honestly one of Carl's last performances with the band in terms of newer original songs before he passed away. And I think that that adds some emotional context to it for me. So I'm going to align a low hop, but I do really like California saga Big Sur. So don't come after me, people. I'm going. I think even if it's the Allen version, I think it's still a really sweet song. And I think it carries this equal weight to its feel flow is counterpart from just the acoustic guitar and just the singing. It's really beautiful. Big sir. I think these are two of Mike's. best songs that he ever wrote. Um, but yeah, I got to go with line up a little hot too. It big sir. Yeah, easily. I honestly like I like strange things happen better. So that got it. Maybe I would have voted for that, but. Well, Steve, I'm not going to surprise anybody with California. So I got big sir. I'm sure but that's where I'm going. All right up next. All right. This is this is absolutely brutal guys. This is going to be the worst one so far in terms of like what we're going to pick. Um, all I want to do versus don't talk for sure. I'm much shoulder. I want to do so easy for me. Oh, okay. I'm going to go talk. I know that I'm going to go don't talk because as much as I love all I want to do, I do feel like sometimes I do need to take a break from it. We're like don't talk. I can listen to that thing over and over again. And like it always hits just as hard as it did the first time I heard it. So definitely don't talk. I like to pet sounds. One of the best arranged songs ever in my opinion and yeah, just. Yeah, don't talk. Never fails. All right, it's got to be don't talk for me. I'm going to go with all I want to do. Just I think don't talk is a better written song, but. I know there's just something about that recording on sunflower. That's really beautiful. I'm going to go on. I want to do the production carries it. I mean, actually, it's so special, but I do really enjoy don't talk as well. All I want to do advanced is three to two. Wow. Just turning this is a. This is Mike and Brian's all I want to do and Dennis is all I want to do, right? All right. This isn't our world. It's not a problem. Nate. I don't think I don't think I don't think any amount of begging or pleading from anyone could get the dentist. All I want to do on any best stuff. Nate, Nate's like now hold on a minute. All right, match point of our love versus slip on through. Sorry. What are you going to slip on through? All right. I'll get my vote done. I don't know. I really like involved. There's different elements of the my like. Obviously slip on through is a great soulful rocker from Dennis. I think it's a great energy to it. You really sing in the hell out of it. And then match point is like this 70s yacht rock banger from Brian. Goofy lyrics, but like the production always really moves me. And I think it's a really well produced and arranged song. So this one is one. It depends on the day you ask me, but I am going to go match point because I just want to see if I can get this thing through the first round. So. Match point for me to. Flip on through. Yeah, sorry. I wish I could say it was close, but. Great song. But. Yeah, match point is. It's gone. But it's far from my. It's not my favorite. This is an interesting one. I'm curious to see what Riley goes on this one. Angel come home versus crack at your love. Angel. I am going to go. Oh, God. I'm going to go crack at your love because as you guys know, I'm not quite as enthusiastic about Angel come home as you guys are. I like the song. I think the lyrics are very moving. I think Dennis's vocal really elevates it, but judging them as a song and just like with the production to. Angel come home for me. Doesn't really compare to crack at your love. I love the slap base on crack at your love. I think Ali is one of his like, cool, assounding vocals on that one. And I think it's a highlight of 85. So crack at your love for me. I would say angel come home because crack at your love. I do like, but I just think Angel come home is so damn moving. Like it moves me. I can't in good conscience vote for a song called crack at your love. I've never got no title, but, but that aside, I angel come home. I love and that would be my vote. I like the production better on crack at your love, but that chorus in the angel come home is too catchy. So I want to go with Angel come home. Crack you your love for me. Well, it was three to two angel come home advances. I think that's like three in a row or a couple of rowers like this split like this. Yeah. All right. Up next we have Caroline no versus help me Rhonda the summer days version. So I am going to go with Caroline no. I love help me Rhonda. I think it's one of their best kind of upbeat rockers. I love how it's vocal on it. Definitely a song that deserve to be a number one hit. But Caroline no is just an absolutely haunting ballad and I think it's the perfect way to close out pet sounds as well. So Caroline no. Caroline no for the same reasons you said. Yeah, it's a phenomenal track. Caroline no. Rhonda for me. All right. And the matter which one I vote. I actually honestly really split here. But it passes. I can't give a vote. What would you have voted? Give us a round. I don't think I would have been able to like that. Help me Rhonda is one of my favorite beach boys songs period and Caroline no I think is my favorite track up for pet sounds. So. I guess I guess I go Caroline no. But it's it's it's tight. That that wasn't pretty tight when I honestly. All right. Next up we have busy doing nothing versus leaving this town from Holland. This is kind of a close one for me as well busy doing nothing. I really love the boss and Nova vibe to it. You know the fun lyrics about you know Brian giving directions to his house and just the kind of like slice of life lyrics. But leaving this town is such a moving song from Holland. Great vocal from blindy. I love that cool synth solo in the middle. And yeah it's a highlight of the early 70s catalog for me so I'm going to go leaving this town by a small smidge. But I do really love busy doing nothing. This might surprise you but I'm actually going to vote for busy doing nothing. Even though I do love leaving the town. The reason being because I like kind of its boss and OV it's like Brian trying something new and like I've already put through a blonde Ricky track. So I rather put through a bribe. I don't care. I'm going to leave this town anyways. That keyboard solo just. Power of vocal. I love leaving this town. This is a tough one. But I'm going to go busy doing nothing. I love that boss and OV feel of it the lyrics. It feels like a hot summer day in LA to me. And it's one of my all time favorites but I love them both. Well made. Yeah. For me, I'm going to have to go with busy doing nothing. I think with leaving this town it's a cool concept and a cool production. But I do think it took quite a lot of listens for me to to grasp and the melody and relate to like the melody versus busy doing nothing is just so infectious from the first time you hear it. Yeah busy doing nothing is definitely the more accessible song for sure in terms of like the melody and just like the real laid back feel of it. I think leaving this town is the heavier song so it kind of depends what you're looking for you know with the music. I think it comes down to how much you can appreciate like prodgy stuff because if you can't really appreciate that you probably won't like leaving this town. All right well I thought we had our hardest match up already but this one is going to definitely be up there. Don't worry wait let me check you. Don't worry baby versus wouldn't it be nice. Oh Jesus. Don't worry baby. Wouldn't it be nice. God. Oh God. Let me go last and let's go first. I got to think about this don't worry baby is my personal favorite Beach Boys song. I wouldn't say it's their best but it's my personal favorite so I much as I love wouldn't it be nice it's don't worry baby. Let's go. Well I hate to do this to you Matt but I'm going to it's going to come down to you because I've going with it to be nice. It's I love don't worry baby. I think it's an amazing song and I really love the lyrics that I think it's what abides best vocals but wouldn't it be nice is just I mean every element of song is just one of those perfect songs and I know you know we've all heard it a lot it's their most popular song but I think it's for good reason. It's just one of those just absolutely timeless 60 songs so. So I think they're both perfect pop songs I love both of them I'm going to give the edge to wouldn't it be nice because I found it first and it was one of the songs that really maybe fall in love with the Beach Boys. So it's a little bit more sentimental for me. Well Steve we lost Matt on our side so. If I had found don't worry baby earlier I might have given it the edge but. That was a tough one that's probably been the hardest being so far. Alright well here's maybe our most hilarious one so far in terms of you could not ask for a more different vibe between these two songs. We have Kokomo versus still I dream of it. I love Kokomo I think it's a fun pop song but this is no contest for me still I dream of it I think is one of Brian's most underrated ballads. I'd love everything about this song I love the lyrics I love the production on the adult child version and then also that script back demo version is really haunting as well but. This is one that I really relate with and this is a song that I listen to a lot again during like a period in my life when. When I was really struggling so for me still I dream of it I just have a very close connection to that one. Kokomo for me. So immediately I'm not the biggest fan of the adult child stuff but I do think still I dream of it is a very very moving song it is a highlighted that material for me so I will gas my vote for still I dream of it. Yeah still I dream of it for me it's the it's the standout track of that whole period as far as I'm concerned. You know it's actually pretty tough one for me. Kokomo is just a really well written pop song but I'll go with still I dream of it just the. production on, it's really cool. All right, up next we have two songs from "Surf's Up." We have the title track "Surf's Up" versus "Win To Be Nice to Live Again." Well, I guess that one didn't make it, but it could have been on there. So for me, I'm gonna go with "Surf's Up." "I really love "Win To Be Nice to Live Again." I think it's an amazing song from Dennis and I really wish it had made it onto that album because I think it would have honestly moved that album up quite a few notches in my own personal ranking, but "Surf's Up" I think is an absolutely amazing track and a great way to close out that album. It's one of those songs where I know sometimes, you know, "Vandikes, lyrics don't always do it for me," but this is one where I think the lyrics totally fit the atmosphere of the song and actually enhance it. And "Brian's Bokeh" is at the end or really moving as well. And then when the group harmonies come in at the end, one of those just great moments in the Beach Boys catalogs, so "Surf's Up" for me. "Surf's Up" for me too. It's a tough one for me, but I'm a big fan of "Win To Be Nice to Live Again," but I got to give it to "Surf's Up." That really is a great song, seriously a great song. - Yeah, I love "Win To Be Nice to Live Again" is fantastic. It would have added so much to the album had it been on it. And it's kind of more appealing to me because I've heard it less than "Surf's Up." But "Surf's Up" is phenomenal and really deserves it. So I'm going "Surf's Up." - Yeah, I kind of have to go "Surf's Up." - I really like that extended outro on the extended version of this song. I think that's like a flute solo. - "Surf's Up" for me too. - Yeah, I really love that outro. It's probably the most prog he'd ever got. - And I feel like when "Briand" performed "Surf's Up" on "Lenner Bernstein's Show," I feel like that's one of the most iconic Beach Boys moments ever. And it just captures that era so well. And it's so haunting knowing that "Briand"'s health issues were like right around the corner at the time of that being filmed. If not, having started already in a significant way. But this is such an iconic performance. - I'm all right, we are down to our final five matchups of the first round. So we have, going on, first is somewhere near Japan. So for me, if you would ask me a few years ago, this one wouldn't have even been a contest. But now I have to go somewhere near Japan. I think it's one of their best 80 songs. I absolutely love the production on it. Love how each guy, each member of the band has the road to Stig Depart. You know, you got Al on the "Chinese Junk" part and even Bruce sounds cool on his section. So this is just a really great song. And it's very distinctive from a lot of the other songs from this period of the band because a lot of their songs, you know, they're kind of like your 80s, kind of like cheesy pop. But then you have this, which like totally stands on its own. And I think in a different universe could have been a hit for them. I just think it's a really incredible song. And great work from Mike and Terry Melcher on this one. - Someone near Japan. - For me, they're both songs that I completely discount until I put them on. And they go, "Yeah, all that's pretty." And they're both better once I got them on than when I think about them. I'd go with going on though. I'd just give it the slight edge. I mean, I'm surprised how well matched this stuff is turning out in the first round. But I'll go go on. - It was not random. - That's really tough for me. I'm gonna go with somewhere near Japan though 'cause I wanna see at least one Bruce Co-Rite in the list. So somewhere near Japan. - I'm going somewhere near Japan. I think going on is a really well-constructed song. And I gas it up a lot every time you mention it. But if I really had the choose right now, which one I'd rather listen to, I'd think I'd go somewhere near Japan. I just, it's like if Kokomo took itself seriously, almost. - I feel like somewhere near Japan, that could have been, I hit for like almost anyone in like the late 80s, that good of a bottle. - Yeah, right, yeah. - There's anybody else besides the beach bowl is. - Or the beach bowl is just more cool at the time. I was like, you give that to someone that was big at the time that could have been a huge hit. - Well, yeah, the single they released either right before or right after this was fucking white out. So a couple of years before, but yeah, that's the greatest song we ever did right there. - Yeah, me, my son. - Maybe I'm wrong, Steve, you could probably comment on this. But when I think of the beach boys in that era, I think they maybe weren't like cool in a hip way, but it seemed like they were very cool to like a family audience. Like, you know, was that how it felt back then? - I didn't have the families. (laughing) - I don't know. They weren't cool to me. I, you know, they weren't cool to me. I just kept helping that they would turn things around and put out a good record. I found stuff that I liked on the '85 album, and after that it was like, I kept buying their stuff, but I just felt like I was kind of burning my money too. (laughing) Really, there was, yeah, I found it all, I found it more dire at the time than I do now. I mean, there are things like California Dream and that I really liked their version of. But at the time, it was like, well, why are they doing California Dream? And that's just unimaginative. And yeah, I mean, I guess, you know, the people that watched full, you know, the people that watched full house like them. But. - Yeah, that's kind of what I was looking into. - I mean, mainly I think they were just forgotten. You know, they're still around. Or you'll see them at the, you know, the state fair or something. You know, their record just not even reckoned by it, people I think mostly. What was it though, you know, some are paradise sold to thousand copies when it came out, I think. - Yeah. I mean, if Nate was alive at the time, it would have sold 2000. (laughing) - I would have been going to the door, hucking that thing. - Yeah. - Oh my God. All right. So here's your proof for Riley, this isn't randomized because this matchup is the worst one for me. In terms of like, I hate that I have to eliminate one of these two songs in the first freaking round. We have, please let me wander versus all this is that. - Oh, please let me wander. - I know, I know for you it's easy. - Yeah, that's it. - I know for you it's easy. - Yeah, I know for you it's easy. - Yeah, I know for you it's all time best vocals. - So I have to go to the one of the sun here. - But I do love Mona lot. - I do love Mona lot. - I like Mona but it's easy. - It's warm to the sun. - Yeah, if I had to nominate a great - Yeah, if I had to nominate a great - It's warm to the sun. - I would pick one of the sun. - I'll go warm to the sun. - Riley's thinking yeah, warmth of the sun or. - Love feels back to. - Mona's a banger but it's just that's a. It's like so lopsided that match up. - Yeah. - All right, and then our final match up of the round of 64. We have another two very different songs. We have Serfen USA versus Disney girls from Surf's Up. up for me not for me this isn't too much of a debate I like for USA, but Disney Girls. I think it's Bruce's best song. It's that versus Deer Dury for me, but Disney Girls is just one of their best ballads and I love the lyrics and the production and just everything about it. It's just a song that really moves me whenever I listen to it and it's one of those first deep cuts that I remember like really clicking with me early on during the first few months that I was really deep diving on this band. So it looks like Nate's about to have a brain in his own. Yeah. Oh, it's actually tough one though. It is it's tough. I really like the energy of Serpent USA. I think that's really hard to be and I think they've managed to capture really upbeat energetic sound, especially for that time when it came out. Well, I think Disney Girls is just a really well composed song. So I'll give the edge to Bruce this time. I'm gonna go with Disney Girls and this is for kind of a big reason because Serpent USA is basically a knock-off of a Czech Married Song. That's basically what it is. I mean, it's a good knock-off, but it is. Disney Girls is original, even if I still have an issue with the Tootsie Roll lyric. That's it. It's alright. I was so hot on Disney Girls until you mentioned the Tootsie Roll lyric. No, no, no, no, no. I'm ignoring. But yeah, I mean, if I was assembling a Beach Boys greatest hits, it'd be Serpent USA, but if I'm going with what I would play, it's Disney Girls. This is hard. Because you guys, if you were called, and we did our favorite list of our favorite songs and albums, Disney Girls was my number one. And I think it's one of the best written songs ever, but Serpent USA just kind of encapsulates the whole Beach Boys thing. And Serpent USA was the first Beach Boys song I ever heard when I was a little boy that sent me down the rabbit hole. Yeah, I guess as much as I love Disney Girls, and I think it's a perfect song. Oh, damn. I was about to go with Serpent USA, but I got to go with Disney Girls. If I'm detaching my personal experience and just going objectively, I'll go with Disney Girls. I was going to say, if you're judging them based on the impact they had on the band and just the historical significance of them, obviously, Serpent USA. But in terms of like just judging these like compositionally and production-wise and just the songwriting, for me, it's easily Disney Girls. Because like Matt said, it's an original song and I think it's one of their best originals that they did. We're Serpent USA as much energy as it has. And as timeless as it is, it is, you know, a Chuck Berry rewrite. So yeah. And like the words in Disney Girls are just so lush. Like, where you're going. Were you expecting a clean sweep for Disney Girls on that one? Me? Yeah. No, because I didn't know what Riley was going to go and I didn't know what Nate was going to go. So what it came down to. I thought it was going to come down to Steve. All right. So we have moved on to the round of 32. So the matchups are only going to get harder from this point on. So our first matchup of the round of 32, we have breakaway versus all summer long. I'm going to let one of you guys go first on this one because I got to think about it. So all summer long. All along. I'd probably go breakaway. Oh, man. Do you want me to go? Really? What? Or do you want to go? Yeah, I want to see how my answer out a little bit. All right. So what are we right now? Two to one. Two to one. Okay. I'm going to go breakaway. I really like all summer long, but breakaway is like one of those songs where it's like a hit single that wasn't. You know, I know it wasn't hit overseas, but in the US, it didn't really do shit. But I think it's one that like deserves to be remembered along with some of their all-time great songs. Because I think it is one of their all-time great songs, great melody, great production, great vocals. Yeah. This is this is a great one. And one of their, you know, best late 60s songs in my opinion. Yeah. I feel like if you said breakaway here, you were going to get to talk about the Kelly Clarkson song, not the big choice. I would hope not. They're on a beach boys podcast right now. I mean, like, I mean, like, random, like, you go up to someone's, you know the song break, but I think you're talking about Kelly Clarkson. Mm-hmm. You know what? They're about on par, I think, like, and how, how I view them, like, compositionally. I got to go nostalgia here. I got to go all summer long, but it was really tough. So we have Kelly Clarkson's breakaway versus Kid Rocks all summer long. Oh, Kelly Clarkson. Okay. All right. All right. Here's another doozy for you guys. We have, I get around versus she knows me too well. I'm going to go with she knows me too well because I consider it again, just one of their all-time great ballads and, uh, lyrically speaking, I think it's also one of their strongest tracks. Um, very, you know, interesting lyrics for the time, you know, lyrics that, um, were much, much deeper than a lot of the other music that was coming out around then. Um, and for the Beach Boys too, you know, like, obviously today was a big evolution for them, um, in terms of songwriting and lyrics, but she knows me too well. Still stands out to this day, um, for the time that it came out. I gotta go. I get around. It's iconic. I get around. Do I even need to say my vote? I go, I get around, I get around amazed me because I as many millions of times as I've heard it, it still sounds fresh, which not every Beach Boys song that I love does. So I get around. Up next, we have "Till I Die" versus "When I Grow Up to Be a Man" kind of an interesting matchup. We have the growing up song and we have the dying song. So, uh, I'm going to go with, this is a tough one because again, love both of these songs, uh, for their lyrics and also for just compositionally, but I'm going to go "Till I Die" because for me, it's a heavier, more emotional song, um, that really moves me a lot when I listen to it, especially, you know, now seeing that, you know, Brian has passed and all the other members are getting up there in age now. So "Till I Die" for me, just because I think it's one of their best, uh, produced and written songs. Yeah, "Death Winds" "Till I Die". Yeah. All right. Uh, "Till I Die". Yeah, "appropriately" for me, appropriately, for me, I'm voting for old age and death instead of you. So, "Till I Die". He grew up, so. Fair idea for me too. Damn you Nanim. I see, I wasn't expecting you Nanimus on that, but all right, cool. All right, up next. Here's another one that's going to, I'm very curious to see which way we go on this. We've got "Let 'em Run Wild" versus "Forever". Uh, "Forever". "Let 'em Run Wild" right? "Let 'em Run Wild" for me. It's "Let 'em Run Wild" for me, as much as I like "Forever", I feel like "Let 'em Run Wild" still sounds a little more fresh for me. Um, well, like "Forever", as much as I like it, there are times where I feel like I do sometimes need to take a break from it. We're like "Let 'em Run Wild", like just the arrangement, the production, it just always does it for me every time I hear it. And I think it's uh, a gray vocal from Brian, regardless of what he says about it. So. I mean, Nanimus himself would say "Let 'em Run Wild" is a better song. I know he would, so "Let 'em Run Wild." I think so too, but "Let 'em Run Wild". Nate, what would you vote at? I mean, forever. So it's a "Let 'em Run Wild" right? All right. All right. Next up, we've got "Here She Comes" versus "The Night With So Young". I'll let one of you guys go first on this one. "Here She Comes" full sending it. "The Night With So Young". That's, that's tough for me. I know, "Here She Comes", it's a little bit bad that the beach boys can sound like anything, but what you think they should sound like. So, you know, that helps sway my vote. "Here She Comes" for that reason. Exactly what I was saying. Hell is that. "Here She Comes" for me. Jesus. Oh man. All right. Yeah. "The Night With So Young" for me. Just because I think it, you know, there's more beach boys in it for me. You know, like, "Here She Comes" great song, but like, "The Night With So Young" is like every quality I love about the beach boys. "Here She Comes", again, great song that I would listen to anytime, I hear it, but "The Night With So Young" is just absolutely timeless for me. But here's the fun thing about "Here She Comes" play that for someone who asks them to guess what band it's by. I know. I know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. All right. And up next, we've got "In My Room" versus "Long Promised Road". This is another one I'll let one of you guys go first. "In My Room". Oh, that's another hard one. That's, that's tough. I'll probably go "In My Room". But that's tough, very tough. Next to like, "And Your Dreams Come True", it's the most forefreshment they ever sounded, I think. Steve? Yeah. It's gotta be in my room. It's a tough call, but. In my room. Yeah. I'll join you guys on that in my room. I was actually not expecting an animus on that one. Yeah. I just think the more I thought about it, it's like just the emotional depth of "In My Room". "Long Promised Road" is, again, great song literally as well and production-wise. It just is incredible. But yeah, in my room, there's just something about that. Like Riley said, that opening as soon as it starts, it's like, you know, you're just like into it. All right. Up next, we have another song from "Surfer Girl", "Your Summer Dream" versus "Marsela". "Tough One", but I'm gonna go "Your Summer Dream", just because it's one that I never get tired of hearing. Just go, again, "Gorgeous Ballad", "Gorgeous Harmonies", or not "Harmony's", but "Gorgeous Lyrics" really love it a lot. So, "Marsela". Ooh, "Marsela" that shocks me. "Your Summer Dream", again, it just takes you into the song really well. "Your Summer Dream" for me. Yeah, "Your Summer Dream" really. That moves me a lot more than "Marsela", much as I love "Marsela". Yeah, "Marsela" is a "Bop", but. - So here's where you just close. - Yeah. - I wish your summer dream had harmonies. Then it would maybe take the cake to me. - But that's actually why I like it. Because to me, the songs they don't have harmonies I kind of stand out more. - Yeah, actually, I'm not sure what I think about it with harmonies. I feel like it almost would take away a little bit of the emotional depth of it for me. But I'm not sure. - Yeah, I like the simplicity. - I probably wouldn't even, I wouldn't harmonize words underneath the lead line. But I would probably like ooze their eyes in the background. - All right, up next we have two late 60s songs from them, Wild Honey versus Little Pad. For me, again, I like Little Pad, but I'm gonna go Wild Honey for the reasons that I stayed it earlier. So I'm going Little Pad. I think Wild Honey needs to be a little bit more dynamic. But - Me too for Little Pad. - Wild Honey for me. I will kill him. Oh, it's down to Matt. I think Wild Honey is more fleshed out, but I like Little Pad a little bit more. Just because again, I think it's one of the all time great songs in their catalog and the production is way ahead of its time with one of my especially vocals to go with it as well. So. - I like how far you say a lot, but yeah, it's gotta be all I wanna do. - I think it was the field flows version. I might go with Big Sir, but I think this time I gotta edge it out to all I wanna do. - Yeah, All I Want to Do. - Yeah, these are like the mics best of the 70s, best two songs of the 70s by Mike for sure, but all I wanna do for me. I agree that if it was the field flows version, I would maybe go with Big Sir, but in this case, all I wanna do. - All right, next slip on through versus Angel Come Home. This is an easy one for me to slip on through. It just does a lot more for me. And I think it's again, one of Dennis' best contributions to the band. So. - Angel Come Home for me. I'll go slip on through. - What went through has never spoken to me the way it does to other people. Early Dennis Rockers just don't reach me the way they reach other people. It's gotta be something with me and not everybody else 'cause I'm in the minority. So I'm going Angel Come Home. - I will say Steve, that's a sentiment I've heard a lot. You're not the only person I've ever heard that from. - Yeah, I mean, I mean, slip on through is the best of them, but he always sounds like he's, it always sounds like he's flailing away and trying too hard. You know, not really, just like speed is the thing that does it. I don't know. But slip on through is the best of the early Dennis Rockers, but it still just doesn't speak to me the way it does to other people. - Little name is down to you. This is a two to two match-up. - Yeah, I'm gonna go with. Probably slip on through. I think the songs are about tired for me, but the reason I'll go with slip on through is I think the production's really interesting with that cool guitar and cool percussive kind of like that cricket cowbell kind of sound. So yeah, there's a lot of ear candy in that song and some really interesting drumming by, I think it's Earl Palmer on that one, really cool drumming on that one. - Yeah, I will say it did, I remember when I was first getting into the band, it did take a little bit to grow on me, for sure, slip on through. At first, the melody wasn't connected with me. I kind of felt like it was out of sync with the track. I think that's because it's a weird time signature. But over time, yeah, it really, really grew on me. And now I just view it as like, it's just like really great, so-full rocker. That like, yeah, really is a great way to open up that album. So. - It's Dennis Dragon on drums, by the way. - Not Darryl, not Darryl. - No. - No, Dennis Dragon, his brother, right? - Yeah, there's two dragons, Riley. All right, we have Caroline Noe versus Busy Doing Nothing. This is easy for me, Caroline Noe. I really like Busy Doing Nothing. I think it's a lot of fun, but Caroline Noe is a real heavy hitter for me, just really moving song. - Caroline Noe, yeah. - Caroline Noe. - Yeah, Caroline Noe. - Caroline Noe for me too. - You an animus. - Steve, where did your long hair go? - Shh. - Shh. - That's fucking brutal, man. - That is brutal. - I'm trying to hold onto my mic. - I'm like that. - All right, up next we have, wouldn't it be nice versus still I dream of it? - Wouldn't it be nice easily? - Well, for me, it's more of a debate because wouldn't it be nice? This is one where it's like, I'm taking my personal, my personal connection with the song compared to just judging the song on its own. Like if I'm judging it on its own, I vote wouldn't it be nice? That's a really tough choice It's like picking a favorite child, you know, oh, I feel like that'd be easier um You know what I think I'm gonna actually have to go with please let me wonder All that talk I really give to I get around me my favorite beach boys song It hasn't gotten old and it's still fresh But I think the more I've gotten into like just songwriting and just listening to music I think please let me wonder just keeps getting more beautiful every time I listen to it Oh, I love you at the end Yeah, I gotta go please let me wonder. It's just I think it's his best ballad and uh probably one of my favorite songs of all time. So Please, oh we Did it we finished the bracket that was really interesting Like you guys said, I think it was um both Riley and Steve saying it like this was a really interesting considering This was a randomly generated thing like we had some really interesting matchups both in the first round and as it went deeper on Yeah, just this is a big challenge to do but I really enjoyed it and it was really interesting seeing uh What songs advanced I think there were a few that got knocked out early that surprised me But um in the end I'm not surprised at all with like what the final four were and what we ended up going with for the championship So any thoughts guys on the bracket and and how this went um you should come should have made it farther But um but um my thoughts There definitely were some songs that I know got cut kind of early. I know some of the small material like here Is it bills and cabinet sense? I'm sure people are gonna be surprised that that got cut kind of early I do think little pad made it a lot further than it I thought it would Um here she comes definitely had a pretty good run I think please let me wonder being the final choice like the ultimate winner I don't think that's going to be too surprising to a lot of our long-time listeners because we all really do love the song and I do think that as far as A representation of the Beach Boys catalog. This isn't the most obvious choice But I do think it's a very fitting choice Because it kind of summarizes a lot of what makes them so amazing in one tune Nate any thoughts on the bracket? Yeah, I thought this was a blast it was um Some of them I thought I was gonna be really uh challenged with all of them But some of them were uh surprisingly easy for me and some of them were a lot harder than I expected And I I never imagined in my wildest dreams that uh Disney girls and warmth in the sun would go against each other or that was probably the hardest for me But yeah, this was a blast. It was a good idea to do it I actually walked in thinking huh wouldn't it be funny if if I get around and play mashed up against please let me wonder I didn't think it would actually happen Well you jinxed yourself No, I just means I did a really good job convincing you guys um But I kind of I'm surprised how I guess Almost little like some of the 70s how far some that 70s stuff really made it compared to like some of the 60s stuff Especially considering like where I guess the fandom has gone in the past like decade or so How big the 70s material has gotten for a lot of the fans, but like You kind of forget just how good that 60s stuff really was I still kind of wish some of the 70s material and even some of the 80s material made a little bit farther But like I'm not surprised without it went. So So little pad Was a real surprise to me Here she comes was the surprise for me How do you feel about that song name? Oh, I mean I love I love it that you know, I'd say I As you guys know well, I probably love like 90% of their songs But in the grand scheme of things it doesn't light my fire as much as a lot of the other ones too Now I want to know what it was sound like a mic tracing light my flight I love that you roll pyre Before we wrap up, I did want to ask you guys specifically Nate because I know Nate has a great way of wording things um Did you guys have any thoughts you wanted to share about Bruce's recent departure from the beach boys touring band and just his contributions to the band over the years You know I You know Bruce I think has been an integral member of the band for a really long time um, you know, he's been there forever He was a kind of a rock for a long time when like especially like I know in the like late 70s early 80s when the band was just like a mess frankly And he was kind of like a stab stab stabling factor Um, you know, I've always been kind of hot and cold with his contributions to the band like musically speaking like some of the songs he wrote But there are some songs that he wrote like the deer trees and the Disney girls. I think are great tunes And I um, you know, I thank him for you know helping to contribute to my favorite band and um You know, and I wish him the best in his next venture in life Yeah, similar thoughts to you Matt um my main thoughts are I'll miss seeing him out there, you know The guy has been such a huge part of the band's history and made so many contributions over the years Um, you know, came in at a very important period, you know in their history when Brian was getting off the road And they needed to replace him and Bruce became that guy and I doubt at the time that they imagined that Bruce would become such a permanent fixture in the band's history and and you know I'm pretty much the large majority of the remaining albums on from that point, but he's been a huge part of their history. He wrote some really great songs that I really personally love a lot. Deirdery, Disney girls, I love tears in the morning. I really just love the guys' contributions and yeah, you know, I know not everybody in the fandom loves the guys. I know that, you know, there's some things or some issues with them. I get that, but I'm just seeing him out there and I think he was a really valuable part of their history. And I'm like, Matt said, I'm looking forward to seeing, you know, what he does next and hopefully he'll write some more songs. So, I see your rights to songs. Maybe he'll work with the weekend again. That'd be cool. Yeah. Yeah. Mike, can I? Yeah. I'm going to miss seeing him with the Mike Love outfit. But if what he says in the press release is true that he wants to go back to writing and recording and maybe do personal speaking tour and maybe perform a song or two, to me that is a whole lot more interesting than just seeing him again, would do in a couple of lead vocals with Mike Love's crew and then tell him the crowd to stand up. And if he's bored with that after all these years, that's very understandable. So, I mean, as much as I hate seeing him, I'm really excited if he actually does some of the things that he's talking about doing. I'd love to hear something new from him. I think that would be much more interesting than just seeing him do his thing in a Mike Love show again. So, I'm hopeful that that'll actually come to fruition that we'll see some new material from him. Yeah. You guys all put it very, very well. And, you know, there's probably nothing I could say that I didn't say in our Bruce episode. I think Mike put it perfectly in the press release when Mike said that Bruce is one of the most talented songwriters and singers and instrumentalists of our era. You know, he's been a part of so much incredible music with the Beach Boys and without the Beach Boys. And, yeah, you know, I've done a lot of thinking about this and I agree with Steve that the press release sounds very promising and I would be really thrilled to see Bruce do some of those things that he talked about. But at the same time, I understand that things change and things evolve and, you know, sometimes life doesn't go the way you plan. And so, I understand that the band's got to continue on and the show must go on and I'm still, you know, thrilled to go out and see the Beach Boys and have a great time. But, yeah, I'll miss seeing Bruce there. But, yeah, it's a loaded topic, but I'm so grateful for Bruce's 60 plus years of contributions to the Beach Boys as well as all the stuff he's done on his own. And it's just cool to see that he'll continue his musical legacy in the best way he see fits. You know, I think he said before that he'd never write a book, but man, I wish the guy would write a book because I think it would be really entertaining. I'm sure he has so many stories to tell and just like, you know, hearing about that era of the band, you know, when he first joined and and all the time on were through the 70s and the 80s and then, you know, when he rejoined the band in the late 70s, I'm sure there's so much to learn that hasn't even ever been shared anywhere before, but I think he said he wouldn't ever write a book, but I hope he would change his mind on that. Yeah, I thought that maybe now that he's not under Michael Love's employ, it might be a little easier to write a book. And I've also heard that he has worked on a book at certain time, despite saying that he'd never write one. I don't know, you know, how good my information is, but I have heard that that he at least discussed an outline or something that he's not as adverse to it possibly as he said he is. But I could, my information could be terrible, so take that for what it's worth. And he already in the title, I wrote the songs. I like going public or going private. Going private. I sure wish he'd write because he's just, I mean, a Beach Boys aside, he's just such a part of musical history. Yeah. You know, the stuff that he did in the free Beach Boys would make a good book. Right. Yeah, I feel like the Beach Boys part of the book would just be a more off-view chapters. We're like, he's also got chapters from the eyes, early career. And we talked about a lot of that on our Bruce episodes. Some of the early work he was doing in the studio with a lot of artists of the time. So yeah, I feel like if there's an artist that hasn't written a book that I'd really like a book from, Bruce would definitely be up there for me. Yeah. And I hope he doesn't feel like he needs to dish dirt. And maybe he does. Maybe he can't get it published without dish and dirt. But I just want to hear about, you know, what the recording studio was like and how things operated back in the day. And it's a little problem, this and dirt. Yeah. And his friendship with Dennis as well. Because we know how close he was with Dennis, you know, from like seeing some of those pictures and then together and stuff like that. A really, even though they lived very different lifestyles, they had a very tight relationship. So yeah. And I guess I want to, I'll add this was something that Jake and I have been talking about. That in a way, things are kind of ending up in a beautiful way, kind of the way that they're meant to be in a way. Because, you know, Al was always more into like the quirky or a little more eccentric kind of very musical kind of stuff. And now he gets to go out and do that kind of stuff with Brian's band and play the really quirky stuff. And Mike's always been the road dog and the hard work and guys singing the same hits every night and Mike gets to do that for as long as he wants. And now Bruce being like really a songwriter and an arranger and a producer at heart gets to return to his kind of first love, which is the studio. So in a way, you know, you couldn't ask for things to end much better, honestly. Like if you're being realistic, if in a dream world, it would be amazing if all the guys survived and all the guys stayed together and it was all nine of them still together. But in the best way things could have realistically turned out, I think we're kind of getting it, you know. Yeah, I hope we do get a last love album made. We give us give us something Mike give us something. We need that cover album of all the songs we love in the title. Come on. Now that would be one draft. Yeah, yeah, that's a good idea.
