Okay, we're at home this week in Montreal preparing for next week's Grand Prix and HK Trophy in Japan. It'll be our second Grand Prix event after placing second at Skate America in Las Vegas 10 days ago. We are super excited to compete in Japan. It won't be our first time there but it will be our first time ever doing NHK as a team and my first time doing NHK period. So I'm very excited for that. I've been looking forward to getting invited to this competition for a long time and I can't wait. I'm so glad you've been invited. Yay! We've been invited. No, yeah. But yes, yeah. It'll be our first time in Japan since 2019. It's a great invite to get. I mean, it is like one of the best competitions. Japan is always a wonderful host. At any event they host, I find they're just superb hosts and they always make everyone feel so welcome. It's well organized. It's exciting. The fans are always coming in by the tons. I just love it. Yeah, the fans are great. Yeah. I feel like they are particularly awesome. They're the most enthusiastic, knowledgeable and respectful fans I think in the world. Yeah. I love competing in Japan. I just, I love Japan. I'm so excited. Well, let's go. Yeah. You know, we are going to be in a bubble though so we're not going to be able to do our favorite activities which is kind of a bummer because there's so much to do and see, especially right where we're staying in downtown Tokyo and where the rink is. It's right next to Harajuku which is one of my favorite parts of Tokyo because the fashion, the little shops. Anyways, I'm getting off track. I'll just have to imagine it in my head. No, you're right. It would be great, but I know it's just, everything is more difficult with COVID, more things that you have to do. Disclaimer, I am a little tired. I did spend five hours in the car today driving. I had to drive to Vermont to get a new passport. I just found out I didn't have enough pages in my passport to get the visa to go to Japan. We didn't have two pages next to each other which is the big thing. I think you had enough. They just weren't next to each other. Okay, well, I ended up getting a brand new passport today on a very short notice so thanks to everybody who helped me out with that. And I'm feeling a little tired so. But that was a big win. So congratulations on getting your passport, making it across the border back and forth without a hitch. Thank you. Yeah, just really good job today. I think our car deserves a shout out as well. The car performed well. Getting you there safely, your first experience with some snow on the road? It was snowing in Vermont. I was, I was surprised. I was not happy. It's like as soon as I crossed into Vermont, the temperature dropped drastically and then snow, even a car on the side of the road. I hope the person's okay. But. Yeah, we got to get our tires changed. I'm going to make the appointment. Put the winter tires on. Winter is no joke in Montreal or Vermont. Well, anyways. So going back to Japan, we're super excited to go to Japan. It's always a great competition. Do you remember when we went to Japan? We were very early in our partnership. And they always have these lovely programs at the competition that's nice photos printed on glossy pages. And they have like bios written up in Japanese and in English. And then we were cracking up because ours was like. Chalkbates married since 2011. We're like, oh wow, we've partnered up and we got married all in one year. We thought that was hilarious because we had only just partnered up and it said in the program that we were married. And I don't know why we thought that was really funny, but it was just hilarious at the time. And maybe next time, I don't know, we'll go to Japan eventually and we'll be married. I imagine. And then we'll take that program with us and be like, what was there? We're right. So maybe it was a premonition here. Yeah, maybe. I'm glad you think I'm marriage material. Oh, yeah, definitely. I think it's probably from like 2008, but I definitely knew you before that. I'd say probably knew you in 2007 or 2006, even. Maybe we knew of each other then, but then we started hanging out and like, circling the same front groups, you know, when that photo was taken. Because we were obviously friends. We took a photo together, right? Yeah, I mean, we had to have. I don't know if we competed against each other. You were training at a rink. It was like. 30 minutes away. But then sometimes you'd come to my rink to skate. But we didn't see each other that often, even though we lived in fairly close proximity. Right. So basically, I don't know the answer to that question. We met the roof in Michigan. Okay, we met in Michigan. And I think I was maybe. 15 when we first met. That's all right. I don't know. I'm sorry. Oh man, this is off to. Let's just go to the next question. Okay. Now, should I ask you then? What was our first date? This seems more like a second date because it was just like so nice and awesome. But I think it was maybe like our first official date. And you took me out for my birthday to Bahama Breeze. And I remember you picked me up in your mom's red pickup truck. And I thought it was so cute. And then you brought me a present that you picked out yourself in the mall, which I mean, like, yeah, who else would have picked it out. And it was a sweatshirt from Victoria Secret Pink. I remember it exactly. It's a black zip up. It had turquoise lettering that said pink. Man, it must have been the early 2000s. It was. It was. I was into the pink line at that time. So you were. Oh, hoody, I feel like that's like a nice. I know you like clothes. I know you like. Yeah. Yeah. Being warm. You spend a lot of time in ice rinks. Mm-hmm. I went with black, which. I like black is one of my favorite colors. Practical. Definitely. Was that our first date? I don't know. I don't. Gosh, we. So that was like a long time ago because those were some dates that we went on before we really. Before we started skating together. Started really dating. Yeah. Oh, you just asked me? Okay. What has been our best date in your opinion? I think actually when we went to Japan, that this was so cool. We went to Japan, I think. it was 2016 for world team trophy. We had just gone to a concert in Ann Arbor and saw snarky puppy which is an awesome like music group. They're like a jazz ensemble. They've won many Grammys. They're fantastic. If you haven't heard them check them out snarky puppy and then Maddie just you know being Maddie just met one of the band. I don't know we bought a record. Sorry. Okay. We saw snarky puppy. We bought their vinyl and then we hung out to have them sign it and then we just started chatting with a couple of the band members and you know Maddie struck up a kinship as she does and then like two weeks later we were in Japan and they were in Japan and Maddie like messaged the trumpet player and he was like oh yeah we're playing at the blue note in Tokyo. I'll put you on the list. We're like okay. So we land in Tokyo and we just drop our stuff off at the hotel get ready and then we just drive off to the blue note for a fun little date night in Tokyo. It was amazing and then afterwards we're like we're gonna go get drinks. Do you want to come or like oh that sounds so fun. We have to compete. Darn it. Should have gone for drinks with snarky puppy. I know it went in a lifetime. Yeah. But we were focused and I appreciate that. It was so fun. Very memorable. Yeah. What was our worst date? I don't. Do you have an answer for this one? I don't know. I can think of one but I think it was like a double date with my parents like when they were in town we went to a restaurant here in Montreal and it had wonderful reviews. Okay let me just like lead this a little bit. It was a Friday. We had just done a full day of training. Office workout. We were pooped and so we found. I found this Italian restaurant online and I was like oh great. Let's go here. They had reservations and anyways it took us over two hours I would say over two hours to get our food. It was a long way. It seemed even longer because we were so hungry and tired and yeah it was pretty miserable. My stomach was growling when the food did come. I was almost not hungry because my stomach had just eaten itself. But yeah I think that was one of our lesser date. That was our worst day for sure. That's a really good answer. I remember I went to the bathroom and I was like you know we were like where's our food? What's going on in the kitchen? Look in the kitchen and there's like one man. An elderly man who's just like running the show by himself. Cooking like all these homemade Italian dishes by himself for an entire restaurant of people and we're like okay. Okay I see. Maybe we should. The food was good though. Yeah. Once it came it was good. Alright moving on. What is my favorite food? Do you know do I even know? Your favorite food I don't know anything dessert related. You like these red bean. You've been eating these red bean. What are they? The sesame balls filled with red bean. The red bean says to me balls. Chocolate stuff. You like I don't know you like a lot of food. I like snack food. I would say snack food is probably my favorite food. Oh I'm sorry. It's popcorn. I'm very thorough but I think a daily dally a bit takes too long. Who's the better singer? Your mom. Neither of us. Who is the better driver? I'm pointing at myself. I would say it's me. You're certainly a faster driver. I'm no I'm a more efficient driver. What's the criteria? Like. Timeliness, maneuverability. You're definitely better then. Leisure likely to be late. Me. We had we always have a really good time when we go to Hawaii and we always Well not always but whenever we go to Japan we kind of try to book and it add a little trip to Hawaii on the way in The way back because you're gonna go all that way You might as well hit Hawaii on the way home, you know So we did not plan a Hawaii trip for for this for this not enough time Between events usually when there's Japan competition at the end of the season.
