He forgot to tell you that in December 1916, he ended up revealing everything in a letter to his colonel. He was punished? Yes, he became a simple soldier. But thanks to his bravery, he quickly found his rank as a sergeant. And his story made a sound. He got an article in The Little Parisian. To die for the country is the most beautiful fate. What are you saying? I read this sentence in his newspaper. He was ready to do anything to not live under the shadow of the enemy and thought that we would forget him. It's a mistake. There, where he was born in the Far West, in Brittany, there is even today a college named after him. By the way, how did he get away from school when he got involved? He was 15 years old. Certainly, school was already mandatory since the laws of Jules Ferry in 1882, but only up to 13 at the time. We sometimes maintained patriotism and sometimes even the desire of revenge, since the defeat of 1871 and the loss of Alsace and Lorraine. We prepared in some way the young spirits at war. Apart from the Germans, we had other enemies? Yes, for several years, two camps were formed in Europe. On the one hand, Germany, the other, Hungary and Italy. On the other, France, next to Russia and Great Britain. Tensions have risen for many years. The countries have been armed until the war. And the United States? By intercepting a telegram, the American president has learned that Germany pushed Mexico to enter the war against the United States. This attempt of manipulation put him out of it, and he entered the war. But against Germany. All this is very complicated. And while the men are fighting, the women do the rest. Yes, and in addition, they must fight to recognize their rights. In your opinion, when did the women be able to vote? Just after the First War, I guess. In 1919? Not even. In 1919, the deputies proposed well, but the Senate refused. The French women were among the last to have the right to vote in Europe. They had to wait for 1944. So, really? For the country of men's rights? It's a bit of a shame, isn't it? We talk a lot about the hair of the Great War, and it's normal to give them homage. But women, too, played an important role in 1914-1918. Of course, they had to find something to eat and take care of children. But also replace men who were not there for a lot of things every day. The women had to make the harvest, pick up the hay, grow the land. Especially at the time, many more people lived in the countryside. There are also women who went to work in the factories. Some took the place of their husband, others made ammunition for the war. And of course, they had to take care of all the soldiers injured in the front. There were millions of them. During the whole war, there were only women in hospitals, except for the doctor. Some women went directly to the combat zone.
