Episode 4: You Are Not Angry

The podcast "Mental Hygiene" features Yogi Chiru and Susan discussing the yogic perspective on anger. Anger is explained as a powerful emotion that emerges when our sensory attachments (e.g., to taste or touch) go unfulfilled, overwhelming our consciousness and disrupting bodily systems. Crucially, the yogic view separates the self from emotions: we are spiritual beings experiencing anger, not defined by it. This distinction allows higher intelligence and memory—such as recalling one's identity as a parent or ethical principles—to intervene and prevent regrettable, impulsive actions. While anger is often destructive, it can be harnessed constructively for protection if used consciously and then released. Long-term management involves purifying the intellect through practices like breath awareness, which fosters connection with a higher, non-sectarian self beyond false identifications like race or religion, thereby reducing the roots of anger and promoting mental clarity and compassion.

Welcome to Mental hygiene, a space to care for the mind like we care for the body, daily, gently and with love. Posted by Yogi Chiru and Susan Huu, this podcast brings ancient Yogi wisdom into modern life, offering practical tools to cleanse the mental clutter, restore inner stillness, and reconnect with your true self. Take a breath, you're exactly where you need to be. Welcome to Mental hygiene. Hello everyone, welcome to Mental hygiene. My name is Susan and today I'm with my teacher and friend Yogi Chiru. We are going to talk about one topic that many of the experience, especially in this hot summer season, anger and Yogi's way to use mental hygiene techniques to never give this emotion. Welcome everyone. I'm Yogi Chiru, I've been a student of the Vedic lifestyle for over 30 years now and so I've used a lot of the reshit techniques to cope with these types of emotions and how to balance them in our lives. So I'm so glad you're here. We're going to share how we can cope with this amazing emotion and because all of us get it from. And the time in this journey of life. Yogi Chiru, what's the Yogi Vedic way of taking our anger? Where does it come from? So anger we know is a profound emotion which overrides the consciousness and it's a emotion which changes our whole, all the systems in us. Or saying to say they're like a living system, right? Limbic system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system. So all those systems get changed when this emotion is of anger pervades the mind and consciousness. So it stems from the way how the Yogi's understood it is. It's an emotion which evolves into our consciousness because one of our senses didn't get satisfied. So someone, let's say one of the most powerful senses for us is the tongue, the sense of space. The sense of taste for all of us. This is another example. Someone is used to go into their restaurant or maybe to their coffee shop and they're used to getting their taste. So the mind is preparing for it. I'm going to have this, this, this, this when I get there. And then when you get there, the waiter, the barista says, "Oh, we just run out." And because you cannot satisfy your tongue, you lose it. And this is like a minor one, right? This is like a minor phase of anger. You lose it. How dare you? My food is not here, my coffee is not here and then the anger overrides you. Words come out of your mouth which are missing the mode of passion, rajassing and tamasic word of your mouth which allows you to degrade another human being. So that's an example of anger in your consciousness. Very overriding and you lose your mental piece, your balance. A more profound one is the sense of sight and the sense of touch. And also we see they get attached to someone. They see someone they get attracted to. And they approach the person and sometimes the person says, "No." So they say, "I get attached, loss develops." And then because you can't enjoy, you can't touch the person, you can't, you can't, you lose the person says, "No." And so your sense of touch and sight gets checked. And because those senses are not satisfied, people do crazy actions. So they go into, they might rip someone, they might kill them, kill, you see, humans. They are shedding cases, yeah. They will hurt, kill themselves because the person told them, "No." So the anger is in the middle. There are the senses getting attached to the sense of objects. And then chants after the anger pervades our mind and consciousness. So after anger, it's beautiful explain. And it teaches us the Arjun and the Gita that if you can check your anger right there with something higher, with your memory, if you remember, "Oh, in that moment when anger is coming into your consciousness." And you can remember, "Oh man, I have my kids. Oh man, I'm the daughter of so-and-so, I'm the son of so-and-so, the alumna of this university. If you can just have those kind of. The higher elegance kicked in, yeah. It's it? It prevents you from doing things that's regretful about later on, yeah. We can see a lot of actions in our planet today. They are very regrettable. So when you perform regrettable actions, that tells us we didn't use the higher self, the higher remember the intelligence to control the anger. And instead the anger just overrided everything. And then all of a sudden, when you complete with that impulsive action from the emotion, when you calm down, then, "Oh, I should have cooled out with that because not your intelligence, not your memory." Now, those are the higher that could have calm about that. The anger just blocked that out and anger covered everything. And people do actions which they are very remorseful of. So yeah, so this is how the yogis and the rheshes, they see how anger comes. Because it's an emotion, once you live in this world, you will get angry. I haven't met anyone in my life who has never got angry before. So we see, like, I do prison work. I go to prisons and I work with prisoners. And when I'm in prisons, a lot of them couldn't control the anger that led them to do an action that allowed them to end up in prison. When you're in prison, then they get time to think about it. So that tells us we have a portion of society which don't use the remembering intelligence. And then we have a bigger portion of society, like me and you were residents of this society where when anger comes, somehow we are able to check it to a certain level when we don't do something crazy. Right? So the most of humans, most humans know how to check their anger. And that's why they are not in prisons, they are not. But yes, but there's a beautiful way how the rheshes work with it, the mind, the senses, the intelligence and that emotion of anger is in the middle. That's such a beautiful way of looking at it. So anger develops from when our senses develop that attachment to some sort of sense object, whether it's through taste, through touch, through hearing. And because that sense is so we are so attached to that when it's now satisfied, we develop the anger. And when we are not able to check in whether anger, we lose memory, we start to become illusional. And then unfortunately sometimes we do things that's regressive something that's very violent that can end up bringing someone that can end up bringing very much misery to their own self, but also to others as well. And I really love what you are saying, that yogi charu, that anger is an emotion, every single one of us experience it. But I also that tells me that I am not the emotion of anger. And yeah, the way that we speak, it's so misleading sometimes, I am angry, I am sad, I am depressed. But from a perspective of mental hygiene, we're not those emotions, those emotions that are important to help us recognize, oh, I am angry, I am experiencing anger because certain things in my life are not feeling satisfied. Maybe I need to make adjustments when my sense is maybe there are some other parts of my life, I need to work out. But once we address that need of making that shift, ideally we let go of that emotion, we let the anger to pass through. But when we are overly attached to using even those words, I am angry. Then all of a sudden. That's right. That's the solution. That's the solution. The English language is structured, right? I am. And so we say, I am sad, I am happy, I am angry. But we are not angry. The research, we are a divine spiritual being. We have a thought in the mind from the things that's created that thought and all that. And in the thought in the mind, and then it triggers the emotion. Know the emotion and me are separate. Is a thought that triggered an emotion of anger in my mind. I am experiencing that anger now, but I am not that emotion. And like you say, we know everything in this world is transient. Everything in this world only lasts for a while. So as soon as that, those thoughts with the sense of objective can be, emotion of anger leaves your mind. It comes, something else comes in. So yeah, so and then, then oh, no, I am happy. You have the emotions. It's a thought something triggered that emotion, what you think, but then no, you are simply witnessing how thoughts move into your mind and they bring emotions, right? Thoughts of the past comes into your mind. And as you have that memory in your thought in your mind, in my triggered emotions of happiness, you've had many happy times in your life. In my also trigger anger. Wow, you get angry, as you see the person that you get angry, right? Or you might, a thought of the future comes into your mind and then, you know, you have hope, excitement, fear. But so all these emotions, when they come, they are not coming by themselves. They are coming because one of the senses are making contact with sense objects and a thought pattern is created in the mind. And our pattern triggers the emotions, but we are not the thoughts and we are not the emotions. So if we are not those, then we have to feel, we wake, who am I? And what the reaches teaches, we are something superior to the thoughts, superior to the senses, superior to the body of elements, earth, water, fire, air, ether, we are superior to the emotions. We are at the mind spiritual being, but we have to use techniques to recognize that. Then we can start to give up, give the renowns these thoughts, these thoughts, these thoughts perceptions we put on ourselves. Yeah. And thankfully, we're superior to them, too. We also have the control of them. We don't have to be enslaved to our senses, to those attachments. We have to those sense objects when we're able to take that step back to recognize, okay, I'm feeling angry, but that's not why I am. That's when intelligence can really kick in and help us to really navigate that emotion of anger. And also, specifically when it speaks to anger, so often we feel like anger is just the state of being that we are in, but very often there's something so much deeper than that. Because our senses are not being satisfied. Maybe sometimes we feel hurt because someone did something to us and we feel like we are so hurt, we have to do something to protect ourselves and then that emotion of anger kicks in. Or even sometimes when we just feel like we are afraid, we are fearful. And out of that fear, we start to act angry to, in a way that eagles way of protecting ourselves. And then also, right, we know the anger is an emotion. Ninety percent at a time that anger is used in the mode of passion and rajas, ashan and ignorance. So anger can also be used for… In a month of goodness, yes. Well, that's not good. So I'll give an example. I teach yoga. Now, if I am in a class teaching yoga class in the West, there's a high probability 90 percent of the students will be females. If I'm in India, it flips into me. And then they teach a yoga class and they know, "Oh, man, no, what's it? It's a culture in the West. If I'm teaching a class in the West, let's say they are 20 students, there's a high probability 17 of them might be females. And then if I during the class a crazy person comes in there and that crazy person tries to rape one of the ladies, I'm not just going to sit there and be passive and "Oh, we are non-violent." No, no, no, no, that's not the yogic philosophy. Because in the yoga philosophy, inaction creates a reaction as well. At that moment, I can then use that rajas, that passion, that anger to defend the female. And protect the female and then have someone call 911 and then when the police arrive and they are starting it out, they are the authorized people to deal with this. Then I can go back into my mode of goodness, back into my inner peace. But I don't drag it with me for the rest of the day and the rest of the month and the rest of the day now. So there's a time where we can use anger. Absolutely. But I'm going to do other things, right? Parents do it. Even animals do it. You go, the parents let eggs and you come close. Oh, man. The eagle is going to come. The chicken is going to come after you. The gorilla, you did what to my child? That's the natural instinct to protect. We protect. We can use anger to protect us or self from evil. But then after it's cleared, then come back. Like go off that emotion as well. Bring thoughts and emotions which are in the mode of goodness so we can then balance it out of our system. So there's a reason why we are, why God engineered us with these types of emotions. So learn the art of using them for time, place, circumstance, especially anger. But unfortunately people don't use their higher intellect. Sometimes they come to you and they go too passive, right? Too non violent. I don't get angry. I'm a hero getting, no, no, that's a misunderstanding. That's also not real. That's not real. Oh yeah, it's all beautiful, it's all love, it's all wonderful. No, it's not. So you have to, yeah, but the intelligence has the guide when to use it and when to turn it off. So I'm placed circumstance. I say yes. But most of the time in the West, when we see anger, it's not in the protective nature. It's self-determination, that mode of passion, overly passion, or even in that domestic, the ignorant mode. It goes into ignorance when you start to do, create the actions. Then how do we, so many people speak about anger management. Sometimes I even read about things like punching, a same like kind of releasing the anger. I feel like that's one way, but also that probably won't really solve the root cause of why you're feeling that emotion in the first place, if you're just feeling that, like, putting more feelings into it. So, the point in the sunbag is now, at least. These are outlets, let's put it like it, right? But they're like, they're like band-aids, band-aids. So how does the wishes purify their mental hygiene practices? How did they purify the anger, the intellect so much that they don't need it? So the Vedic way of it, Eastern way from the Himalayas and the Vedic culture, is purifying the intellect. So our intelligence is so close to our mind, right? Like, if I tell you, I'm wearing a white color shirt, you look at me and your mind, your eye may contact with my shirt, your mind, and then the intelligence, okay, you'll be through your awareness. My blue shirt. Blue shirt, right? So intelligence is so close to the mind. It's not like they're separated so far. They work together. They're intertwined. And so we have to sharpen the intelligence on a daily basis to remind ourselves that, yes, I am a spiritual being, having a material experience. That's how Paulo Coelho, he says it, but this is the same thing that you always say, that we are a spiritual being. That's the first identification we should have. And the only identification that's eternal that actually lasts. That's right. No, as soon as I start to add on the other layers of identification for me to relate into this world, I should understand those are what is going to trigger the different thoughts and emotions, especially anger. Mm-hmm. Because I think I am African American or African Caribbean, I identify that more than my eye itself. Then when someone says, yeah, I hate African Caribbean people. I'm actually my father. Do you guys think they're offending me? No, they're offending a false perception of me. They are in ignorance and they're identifying with something in ignorance. But if I hear it and then I resonate with my higher self, oh, yeah, they're referring to my temperate material body. I'm not going to lose it. But if I'm in a position where I can educate them, I'm not going to argue with them, but if I can educate them, then hey, right now, my body is dark. And your body is Caucasian. Okay, let's get a razor blade. Just cut a lot of your skin and my skin and see what comes out. Red blood cells going to come out. Some people, they just, the ignorance is so steep. So if I was to react to so many people, ignorance is because of my false identification, I'll be walking around with anger all the time. And now we're just all each other feeding to each other's anger, more than. Yeah. I don't want to be put right. I am my religion. Right. I'm a Christian. I'm a Hindu. I'm a Muslim. I'm a Muslim. I'm a, as soon as you put that layer there, then when you meet someone who says something other than your religion, the anger comes out. You so much so. A lot of the wars on our planet came from religious, diverse, this instead of religion, bringing people together, religion has divided people. So a lot of wars on the planet. Right now we're living on the year 2025. They were in the Middle East. It's been here for thousands of years. For a Muslim or you're a Jewish person and constant, right? India and Pakistan. Right. It's constant. It's unfortunate. All are from and why there are wars because these are extension of the false identification of who we really, really. So we have to connect to that, I yourself regularly. And how do we connect to that higher self? It is right in front of us. Our amazing breath. If a Jewish person sits down on my right, a Muslim brother on my left, a Buddhist sister on my right, a Hindu brother on my left, and all of us sit down, what do all of us have in common that's keeping us alive? Breathing. And the breath is not Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Baha'i, Christian, no, the breath is neutral. The breath is non-sectarian. So God is the provider of that breath. So God has to be non-sectarian as well. And the breath is literally connecting everyone altogether as well. We're doing the same breath. And if we just raise the intelligence, wait, the breath I'm breathing is keeping me alive, the breath that person is this. But then this breath is neither any of the breath is neither African, American, Russian, German, Chinese, the breath is neither Muslim, Baha'i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jew, the breath is so, if you start to resonate with our higher frequency of the breath, we will get deep spiritual wisdom of our higher self. In the Vedic culture, we spend a lot of time with the breath. And when you fall in love with the breath, it starts to give you wisdom like this. Oh, the breath is beyond the false designation. And then when you meet people, we start to relate to people on a higher plane. I don't like that. Never I meet anyone, right? That's how I deal with people. I see them first as a spiritual being. Then I know I live in this world. How to deal with them female. You know, you keep your respect, you know, male, you keep your respect. There are different ways of dealing different individuals when I live in this dimension. But I resonate with them first. I don't see them as a female male. I don't see them as an animized, seen them first as a spiritual soul. Then I use the intelligence. Okay. I mean, this dimension, that's a lion. There's a soul in that lion's heart. Not them from afar. You don't love that lion from up this place. Right? So this is a way you can see spiritual being everywhere. But then in this dimension, we have to know how to change our vibration to resonate to time-placed circumstances. If only we can all live from that place. Then we all have so much more compassion and empathy for each other. But unfortunately, we still live in this material world where so many of us already identify with the different labels we put on ourselves. And when we get angry, it's not only a temperate thing. So often the anger goes so deep. And if we don't have the tools to navigate to work with them, it costs a lot of damage, physically, psychologically, mentally as well. A lot of diseases can also develop from being just being angry all the time. And that's why the Krishna tells our Jun in the latter part of that. He says, "If you can remember who you are and if you refine your spiritual intelligence, oh, if you remember you are a spiritual being, then oh wow, I am the son of these parents. Oh wow, my parents want to get upset. I won't do anything foolish." If you have the intelligence and the memory, you can tame the anger. You can calm the anger. As soon as the, "Oh, okay, let's just hire self-conson. You can tame it." And this is how the richest team is using higher intelligence and using memory. So as we grow every day, we want to grow with the intelligence, let the intelligence act true. And then we can control the mind, control the senses because this is the strutal of how they are on the hierarchy. The elements, earth, water, fire, air, ether that makes up our body is the first wrong. Higher than that are our senses, the eyes, the ears, the tongue, the nose, the skin. Higher than the senses is our mind. Then higher than the mind, is they? Identity of I am. I am, right? The ego. And then higher than the ego, is they? The true self. Spiritual self who we are. So if you can start to purify the I am, I am a divine spiritual being, then you can then control your intelligence. Yes, intelligence gets spiritual. Then you can control your mind. So when the thoughts come in there, the higher intelligence is looking at the thought, "No, no, no, I won't do this. This won't bring me happiness." This one. Oh, but then we see the mind is in the middle, the intelligence and the higher subtle. And then below the mind is the senses and the elements. So the senses and the elements are trying to pull the mind this way. So the, the other side of the mind is the intelligence pulling. So now we, we have a tug on the wire. So then once the higher intelligence is there, then we can then use the senses in moderation. That's the key. We are engineered with the senses. They allow us to get information from this world and then they create thoughts in our mind. You see something, a thought goes in. You hear something, a thought goes in the mind. Now as we use them, the art of control, if you are learning the art to use your senses in moderation, and then you, that's the spiritual mind intelligence grows every day. Every day we learn from the world outside, your intelligence, "Oh, that is solid." That is water, that your intelligence is growing. And then if you connect the intelligence from the world out here to the higher intelligence of your spiritual journey, then you are able to then purify the mind and use the senses in moderation. When the senses are used in moderation, you, you don't overeat, you don't over sleep, you don't overwork, you don't, anything. Once you start to live a life in moderation, the mind gets peaceful. The intelligence is controlling the senses and the mind. And then the spiritual person lives a very balanced life. After balanced life, that is when you are in the middle, you have full control of how to turn anger on when it's needed for the right cause and then you wait, and this is the journey. There were no longer just being pulled by whatever that's the satisfying sense is because we do use the senses in moderation. It doesn't mean we completely let them go. We nourish them, we use them to just like you are saying, not too much, not too little. And then when the senses are feeling satisfied, we don't feel that overly attachment to that, whatever action that is. And we are no longer being triggered when the person at a coffee shop is telling, "Okay, we thought of that. Almond Milk you wanted." Or, you know, you guys are so popular today. You will see sometimes a person goes to a yoga studio and they put their mat at the same place. So they can attach to that space. And then one day they showed up a little late and someone else put their mat there. The person loses their, "How did it slide back?" "Where is the practice of viaragua, the catchment?" "No, they get angry because someone put a mat in my space." "Right in the yoga community, you see." And if we're able to use that high intelligence to take a step back, then we recognize it's really not a big deal there. But we're not able to control the senses. That's when the mind being pulled by the senses. The anger starts to develop, we forget even while we were practicing yoga and we might even get into argument with someone acting out of that mode of rajas and tamas. And again, these are like the minor anger that over, "Oh, anger over a yoga mat." But then we see anger, right? Someone picks up a gun. Also a school and shoots innocent kids or in a building. We get that news, that's the crazy action. How did it start? It started because one of the senses got attached to a sense object and couldn't be satisfied. And when they couldn't be satisfied, if they forgot their intelligence, then they pick up a gun. A lot of kids play these video games. And all of a sudden, they start to convince themselves that they are the character in the game. And they forget that they have a parent, some mother, a father. They're the character in the game. They're attached to that identity in that video game. And then someone step on their false ego in reality and then they do the same thing that they were doing the game. And so the memory is lost. Their intelligence is lost of who they are because instead they're playing someone, the eyes and the sounds with that game convince them. And so when anger overrides them, they do actions like that. And we see it again and again and again around the world. Those are anger at its, well, the right at its worst. So we need to spiritualize the intelligence, remind ourselves who we are, really, really are. And then we need to think about ourselves for our lineage, our family lineage, then our spiritual lineage, right? And those memories then they help us to prevent us from doing remorseful actions. What are some of the actions that we can tend to believe in in that moment of he when I'm feeling I'm getting angry. My heart rate is coming up. The breath, blood pressure is going up. What are some of the things that we can all do tangibly in that split second that we have to make the decision? Am I going to act out of the anger or can I actually pull the sense of spike a little bit? So the Western culture knows it. When someone is about to explode, what do we tell them? Take a breath. Breathe. So that is that amazing cue. Because that's what the yogis do. As soon as a yogi or a risha is losing, one of their senses didn't get pleased and they're losing it, they are able to sit and start to take deep breaths. And as soon as we take deep breaths, the breath is an extension to the mind. So as you slow your breath down, the thoughts in the mind switch. But at a rajasic thoughts or passionate thoughts, intelligent thoughts come in. Clownness comes in, inner quietness comes in. And then your whole personality change if you are able to just, you don't even have to sit just in that moment, just connect your mind to your breath. And I guarantee you because anger is in the mind, you will be breathing shallow. But if you are able to just switch your breathing in that moment, because you start to breathe slow, the parasympathetic nervous system starts to kick in. The tension in your muscle, change, the muscular system change. And then you become a different being in a split second. If you can switch your breath because when you switch the breath, then the higher intelligent, you will remember, oh yes, I am the son of so. And so I am the representative of this university. I am, oh, I am a spiritual man. Let's don't act. Let's don't go with that crazy act that I was thinking of just now. Sometimes just a simple act of taking a few breaths, which intuitively we all know can shift so much. And then we stop ourselves at the end. We don't go towards the other side of the met loss of memory, illusion and crazy actions. And then that intelligence stays with us for like five minutes, half a day, hour and before you know, you do actions that are more helpful for you and the planet. Rather than if you had given, you would be in prison. And then you remember, oh, and then you won't see your kids anymore, you won't see your family anymore. A lot of prisoners when I work with them, they tend to trace in a moment of, if they could have just had a guide, someone to guide them to learn about, right? But then I, so I tell, okay, so we're doing these practices in prison. So when you go out of prison, you're similar scenario going to happen again. The world is sick cycle, right? Sunrise sunset, moonrise situations that got you in here. When you go back out, it's going to come up. What happened again? And so now we, I'm sharing the two techniques that when they come up, don't give in today, pull in anymore. So yeah, that's how we help those people in prisons. And that's how we help people who are outside of prisons as well. So all of us, we all need that anger management in a yogis way. Yeah. And the yogis, I know people are going, I'm going to go kick a sandbag. Those are good. But those are like band-aids, you know, let's heal the mind from inside. Will you get so expert that you can use anger at the appropriate time and then switch it off? And it constantly check it, check it, check it, check it, check it. And then you start to live a beautiful life. Otherwise, some people, because of the memory, they remember something that just triggers the anger. They don't know what they're doing. They walk around constantly anger and that will lead to diseases. Absolutely. The diseases in our body are, we explain our psychosomatic. If you have a lot of anger in your mind and it's going to come into the atoms, the cells, the organs and their brain come. So we can heal. So if you can turn your anger into inner contentment, inner peace, you can then start to heal the body. The physical body, the mental state and everything in between will be so much more graceful. Yeah. You each other, shall we do a sure mental hygiene practice that everyone can use so that we can develop that awareness to become more familiar of how do I, the moment when my anger starts to come up, how can I navigate it? Yeah. And also we don't also don't want to just push away the anger. We don't want to suppress it. We want to work through it so that it's not stagnant in the body, in the mind. And we don't have to hold on to it and easily being triggered. And also because we live in this world, especially right now, in the modes of nature, that's the Rajas in the air right now. I think it's like 96 degrees in New York City, over 100 in Florida. It's so easy when when the outside world, it's already in that state, it's so hot. We so easily get triggered too. So how to cool down the mind, work through those emotions of anger. Yeah. Yeah, let's do a little practice from the Vedic culture or the Rishis purify the anger when it enters their minds. Come into a nice comfortable seated posture when the palms and the knees touch the tip of the thumbs, tip of the index fingers, close the eyes softly and bring your attention to your breath at the entrance of the nostrils. And as you witness your breath moving in and out, recognize it was with you throughout the whole day today. From the time you woke up, your constant companion today. The breath was with you throughout your whole sleep last night as well. And I want you to recognize that anyone who you might have a tension with their, they are also doing the same action, breathing. They are engineered just like you with two lungs, the ribcage with a windpipe, two nostrils. And recognize your breath which keeps you alive is neither male or female. The breath that keeps you alive is neither American, African, Indian, Russian, Asian. The breath is beyond these. These are just in positions we put on our identifications. As you start to appreciate the natural purity of your breath, how non-sectorial your breath is, we can then start to recognize you, the spiritual being is beyond these designations as well. The body is made up of elements earth, water, fire, air, ether. What you are more than the elements. The elements in their roster has no imposition. When they come together in the form of body, we say, "Oh, bellesian, Guatemala, but before they didn't." So let's resonate with the higher self. Your breath allows your mind to stay in the present moment. And as you slow your breath down, it brings a beautiful peace in the mind. But before we go there, I want you to recall, to search your memory, recall a time when you became angry and you did something foolishly, regretful. And you will see it started from one of your senses, either your tongue, your eyes, your nose, your ears, or your skin. They got attached to something. You develop a loss for it and then it didn't get satisfied and then you became angry. Search it like that. Go to your mind. Bring up one of the times you did something remorseful and you will see it follows this pattern. One of your senses that attached didn't satisfy it and then anger came in the mind. Now, when anger entered your mind, the memory got lost. Your higher intelligence got lost. So we want to check it when the anger is there. So how do you check it? If at that moment you connected your mind to your breath and you slowed the breath down, higher intelligence will kick in. For the next minute, I want you to slow your breathing down as much as you can without strain. Breathe in slowly as possible. Breathe out slowly as possible. And continue in this manner for the next minute. No strain. You're just breathing in and out slowly now. Breathe out slowly. Breathe out slowly. Excellent. Now, bring your breath back to normal breathing and keep your eyelids closed, gaze into the center of the eyebrows and you recognize how calm and quiet your mind is. And now, ask yourself, who is witnessing that calm and peaceful mind? That is the true spiritual being, the higher self, the person who's hearing my voice. You are hearing my voice, you're witnessing that calm mind. You are not the thoughts, you are not the emotions, you are not the body of element, earth, or the fire air either, you are a divine spiritual being. Take a deep inhalation, exhale slowly, breath to normal, bring the palms to the heart, lower the brain, the skull towards your higher self. And you want to take these realizations you got from your practice today, off the meditation cushion into your daily life. Check in a way that we recognize your spiritual beings, use the intelligence to know when to apply and or when not to apply. And that way you can live life, enjoying life with your senses in a moderate way, in moderation, keeping your inner peace. Now master. Lift the head. When the eyes are high on you, that's it. Thank you, Yogi Chiramai, my mind was so quiet, I forgot for a split second, it was a hot summer day. Just bring it back to the breath, the breath down, all the systems in your body change. Amazing. Change, digestive system change, circulators, your heart slows down, everything slows down. And your higher self kicks in with the spiritual wisdom. This is so beautiful. I hope our listener, our friends here have received something just as I just did, so incredible. And if you know someone who has been suffering or struggling with the emotion of anger, maybe give them the tool of their breath, maybe send them this meditation so that they can take a moment to be reminded of how to work with our senses, work, make friends with the mind so that we are not falling into that train of becoming angry, losing our memory, start to become illusionary, and then start to do things that we might later on regret. Podcast Summary

Key Points:

  1. Anger arises when our senses become attached to external objects (like taste, touch, or sight) and those attachments are not satisfied, overriding our consciousness and disrupting our mental and physical systems.
  2. We are not our emotions; we are spiritual beings experiencing transient thoughts and feelings. Identifying as "I am angry" is misleading and can lead to being controlled by the emotion.
  3. Anger can be managed by using higher intelligence and memory (e.g., recalling one's roles or values) to check impulsive reactions, preventing regrettable actions.
  4. While often destructive, anger can be used constructively in a "mode of goodness" for protection, but must be released afterward to restore inner peace.
  5. Purifying the intellect through practices like breath awareness helps connect with our higher, non-sectarian spiritual self, reducing false identifications (like race or religion) that fuel anger.

Summary:

The podcast "Mental Hygiene" features Yogi Chiru and Susan discussing the yogic perspective on anger. , to taste or touch) go unfulfilled, overwhelming our consciousness and disrupting bodily systems.
