Episode 21: West Coast, What's Up?

Well hello everyone. We are currently still on tour with Stars on Ice and we are in Flagstaff, Arizona getting ready for our show tomorrow. That's right. We are kicking off the West Coast leg of the tour. Maddie we're back in your neck of the woods. Indeed. Well not Arizona, California but you know West Coast. Yes. That must feel nice. How's it feel being back? Oh it's so far we've just kind of dipped our tone the West Coast but it's been really fun. It's been great. We had a nine hour bus ride last night and I woke up this morning. I looked out the window and the Grand Canyon was just right out the bus to the right. Wow. We couldn't really see the Grand Canyon because obviously it's a canyon. It's down there. You can open me up. Oh I don't know you were sleeping so peacefully. I don't want to disturb you but I got to share it with some of our friends. Karen was up in the back and then Jason got up and we all just enjoyed the view in the landscape. We saw some horses, some baby horses, some cows and just the landscaping was absolutely incredible. That sounds I should have woken you up. I don't know what it is. Incredible. I'll wake you up next time. That sounds like a scene out of a movie that you describe to me. Yeah it made me really think about what it must have been like as a pioneer just traveling West for the first time, the gold rush and seeing all of these sights but you're in a horse and carriage and you don't know what's ahead of you or really what lies around you at all and it was just wild to think that our ancestors like my ancestors saw that and experienced that and I was very very grateful to be in a bus that had air conditioning at that moment and beds. That's amazing. I mean I felt like I should have I wish I had been there but thanks for letting me sleep because it felt good. We've had a big stretch of shows since our last episode in we were in New York City then. We have since been to Cleveland did a show in Detroit Pittsburgh Grand Rapids Chicago St. Paul last night in Salt Lake City and then the nine hour bus right here which was also kind of delayed because we had a little bit of a mechanical issue. We were supposed to hit the road around midnight and didn't end up leaving until I think around one third year too but that was fine. I was already asleep in my bunk. I got woken up by Alyssa. I thought she was pranking us at first because we had talked about pranking other people with her before. I thought she was like okay guys it's time to get up. You guys have to switch buses. We have to be on one bus. I was like there's no way. She just came on we're probably stopped for gas and she's just pranking us to like all get out of bed and then the two of manager came on and he was like all right guys like we have to switch buses. I was like oh this is not a prank but it would have been a very good prank. Had it been a real one. Indeed yeah I feel like so there are two buses full of skaters and Alyssa is on a different bus so for her to whenever she comes on to our bus we always feel like she's up to something but for good reason because she often is and you know she's woken up a couple of cast members so far but this time for good reason but it ended up being kind of fun because then we all got on one bus. Yeah and the first thing I also saw this morning well not the first thing I had been up but when I came back into the cabin and everyone was waking up I was bending down to get something from my bunk and I just look up and Alyssa was like good morning and it was just like her cute little face just like I just looked up and we were like it knows to know it's almost I was like oh my gosh did see you there scared me but anyways she's like one of my favorite people ever absolutely she is she's the best absolutely love Alyssa Lou have to have her on the podcast sometimes. Yeah definitely let's invite her on. She's never boring. So we're in that stretch of shows we got to visit family which was really nice. My family's in the Midwest so they came out for the Detroit Grand Rapids. Chicago, Minnesota even saw my brother and his family and got to celebrate their birthday with them. Now we're in the West Coast and we're gonna see your family next week which must be very exciting because when was last time we even saw them? I honestly like can't even remember it's been so long it was definitely before the pandemic. I mean I've seen my parents before that but I'm saying like my extended family and like cousins. We saw your cousins last night. Yeah we saw some cousins last night we're gonna see some more cousins and friends when we go to Anaheim so I'm very excited about that so late no so that's all like San Jose also gonna see some family and then where else where else are we going? Oh Idaho I have some cousins coming to that show as well so yeah it's gonna be a fun little reunion. The weekend is gonna this weekend is gonna be really fun. We have chosen Anaheim in San Jose and Arizona and I've heard that the ticket sales are quite good. I know for Anaheim it's it's poppin so very excited super super excited to see my family my parents especially it's been so long since I've seen them I think the last time I saw them in person was after worlds last year. That's right yeah it's been almost a full year. Yeah it's been a full year it's been way too long. Wow I'm excited to just get some sunshine being the the good weather your parents are living in Southern California which is again where you grew up. Mm-hmm. Maybe we could just touch a little bit on what possessed you to leave this sunshine. Move from California to cold frigid Michigan. When you're 13 years old please take me inside 13 year old Maddie's mind. Oh I mean I think that I've always loved adventure and it sounded like a real adventure to strike up ice stands move across the country skate with a partner and potentially have all these incredible adventures which did pan out it did turn out that way and I'm on an incredible adventure right now that I'm so fortunate to have and I wish I could say as a 13 year old I could have foreseen and predicted all of this but there's no way I knew that I was just up for the challenge and excited for the possibilities but I definitely do miss California a lot especially the weather and especially in the just dead of winter. That's what I was going to ask what do you miss most obviously weather? Being close to family I'm assuming. Being close to the ocean too I just really love being near the water and having the ability to go to the beach and just have a weekend but yeah mostly my family though that's for sure the number one thing. What about you? How do you feel about California? Tell me your thoughts do you want to live there maybe? Or are we going to be in the east coast? Is this just a home of their can of worms? Who knows right? Who knows right? No I mean California is obviously so beautiful and every time I come here I kind of understand why so many people want to live in California there's so many things that are just lovely about it. The weather included the beaches you know it's kind of cool that like so much of American culture is it comes from Hollywood and from the music industry which a lot of it happens in LA like the whole entertainment scene and stuff so that's that's cool to be around but as a michiganter as someone who spent so much of their life inside of an ice rink it's just I'm not built for this weather as you know. Yes. Don't do well in sunshine it's just my I have an inability to tan that I've come to grips with over the course of my life that I'm just never going to have a suntan a real one. Right. So taking that in mind I've decided to just stay out of the sun just for self preservation. That's very logical. I'm happy you've come to that conclusion. Well you've been you know by my side during this whole journey relaxing. Gosh you know it looks so nice to just go out and sit by the pool day but then we'd end up at the ER because Evan would have boils all over himself from burning. No we would never let it get that bad but but yeah your fair Norwegian side really comes through when we spend time in the sun and well you do your best. We're different. Yeah we're different we're different. Yeah we're different. Yeah but you know opposites attract and having differences is good. But California is not like that intense with the sun trying so I feel like you could really manage to protect your fair complexion. True. It's not like where we are right now. No it's not possible it just takes a little bit more you know due diligence and consistency which I'm pretty good at I would say like. You're excellent. But you're right because you know when we're when we were just in Salt Lake for example or anytime we go to altitude that is when the sun sneaks up on you and the sun is so strong because you don't even realize that you're like closer to it. Yeah. Yeah. Closer to it and I've had - That's a pretty bad sunburn to like champs camp. - Uh-huh. - Oh yes. - You know, when we go to Colorado Springs, or even Utah. - 'Cause it feels cool, but then you're surprised when you get a little color. - Especially like this time of year, because sometimes, you know, through the winter, don't see the sun like very much, especially living in Montreal or Michigan. - Yeah, you really get a lot of sun screen though. - When we were at the cottage, you always smelled of sunscreen, and it was just, I love the smell of sunscreen, 'cause it reminds me of summer. And this is not an ad, but the sun bum sunscreen smells so good. It's like my favorite sun screen smell. It smells like summer. - It's like banana. It's got a banana, you know? - Yeah, maybe banana. It's just like a little fruity, but like still smells a little like sunscreen. It's just, oh, I love the smell of it. So when you were wearing it, I was just sniffing you. - Yeah, I am, you know, you can't catch me without my sunscreen these days. - Mm-hmm. - So, and you know, that's some large part thanks to you teaching me so much more about skincare, which you're a guru of, you know, your regimen is-- - Diled. - Tried and true. - It's diled, yeah. And obviously the result speaks to themselves. So I've just kind of, you know, taking your lead. You don't even go on the sun that much either. - Yeah, no, that's true. - I used to really love the sun. And now I'm just, if I'm gonna spend money on a skincare regimen, why would I go outside and work against it during the day? So. - Right, I mean, we don't stay inside like all the time. We go outside and do stuff, but-- - Obviously, my immunity is important, but yes. - We just don't go like-- - We don't bake. - Yeah. - We don't bake. - Sit outside and try to tan. - Often, in the summer I'll lay off. But anyways. - Anyways, we don't-- - We don't digress. - We digress from an agenda that we don't really have or know we wanted to do an episode and catch everyone up on what we've been up to. But honestly, we've been very busy and very tired from life on the road for now seven weeks. But it's been so fun at some of these shows getting to meet some of you, the listeners, who've come to the meet and greets and said that you listen to our podcast. - It means so much to us when we hear that you guys are enjoying our podcast. It just, it inspires us to keep creating episodes and content and keep you guys up to date on what's going on or things that we may find interesting that maybe you find interesting and it's just so nice to meet you and hear your feedback. So thank you, thanks for listening. And yeah, we're just very grateful for you. - Fantastic. I agree, my second thought. So what's on the horizon for us? We've got a few more shows, but 10 more days of stars on ice if you can believe it. It's kind of sad. It's a bittersweet 'cause it's been so fun and we've just been experiencing so much and bonding with our castmates, but all good things must come to an end and the end is nearing for us on tour. - We've been on the road since March. So as fun as it is, there's also part of me that's really looking forward to getting back home, getting back to the dogs. - We missed them so much. It's like hard to think about them because I think about them every day and it just makes me sad and I just miss them and wanna cuddle them and I can like, oh, anyways. - Something to look forward to, right? - Yeah, for sure. But I'm really gonna miss our castmates, all of our friends. - I know, I'm gonna miss everyone so much. - I'm gonna miss the bus life, seeing them every day, finding food together, Jason scouting out all of his smoothie bowl places, the syllables, which he amazingly brought us some on his current expedition today, such a sweetie. - And inspiring, super inspiring. - Yeah, we'll have to talk more with the cast, have some of them on in the next couple episodes because it'd be great to talk to people right now after having six weeks post-world or post whatever was going on or this tour and how it's affected people.
