Episode 100: Performers Need Change and Growth

In episode 100 of the Being On Stage podcast, host Reggie Dawson marks a milestone that began in 2017, when he wasn't sure he would make it past episode 10. He reflects on change and growth as central themes for performers of all kinds—singers, dancers, comedians, drag artists, burlesque performers, street performers, and more. Using his own experience as an example, he explains that his original nightclub audience aged out, forcing him to expand into MC work, coaching, and podcasting rather than stay pigeonholed. He encourages performers to embrace change, learn new skills, and add new elements to their acts, even when it feels frightening. Reggie then announces major changes: a full brand redesign including logo, colors, and website, which he is rebuilding himself; separation of the podcast from the wider Being On Stage brand; a new official podcast title and logo; and the removal of episode numbers, partly because iTunes discovery favors it, partly because numbering discouraged spontaneous recording, and partly so new listeners never feel they have missed something. He also plans to offer free 20-30 minute coaching calls, a new giveaway on ten ways to make money performing, and continued email and Facebook community engagement. He closes with his signature sign-off: keep on shining.

Speaker 1Shut up and sit down. Welcome to Being On Stage, the only podcast that gives you motivation, inspiration, and confidence to be better on stage. No matter how you entertain, sing, dance, band, comedian, public speaking, MC, drag, burlesque, performance art, or street performer, this is the show for you.
Speaker 2Hey, rock stars. Welcome to episode 100 of the Being On Stage podcast. My name is Reggie Dawson. I'm the creator and host. And I got to tell you, this is a day to celebrate. Episode 100 is kind of a momentous occasion for me. When I set out doing this podcast in 2017, I did not know if I was going to make it past episode 10. Then episode 20. And then 50. And then 80. And now 100. And I made it past a year. And things have been going incredibly well, I have to tell you. It's only just the beginning. But I want to discuss some of the things that are changing and how we're going to grow and things we're going to do. And I kind of want to reintroduce you to the podcast. So speaking of change, and this is kind of what I want to talk about just for a few minutes. Change is something that can be very scary. Whether it's an external change that we're facing. Or if it's facing the fact that we have to change something about ourselves or our brand or our art. And I'm talking about performing here. This podcast is all about performing on stage. Sometimes we have to face the fact that it's time for us to make a change. And it's not always a bad thing. It's a scary thing, but it's not always a bad thing. And the reasons for change are not always negative reasons either. Sometimes it's just time. It's just time to change, time to grow. And change and growth are two of the big topics that I'm talking about today. Change is something that's going to happen regardless. The world is changing. The people are going to change. Your audience is going to change. Perfect example. All the people that I used to entertain when I performed on stage in the club scene no longer go to clubs. So my audience has completely changed. I'm 32 and I've always performed for 21 to 30 year olds roughly. You know, the nightclub range. Those people are no longer there. I don't relate to the people that are now 21, 22, 23. So that's a change that I would have to make in order to stay relevant and stay popular with the changing landscape of the venues I perform at. Now, I was kind of pigeonholed by a venue. Hence, I broke out. I'm now looking to MC. I'm expanding what I'm doing. I'm doing a podcast. I'm coaching other performers all across different areas of performing. I'm not biased. This podcast isn't biased. We help. All performers, whether you are a singer, a dancer, a comedian, a speaker, a drag queen, a burlesque performer, a street performer, a juggler, an acrobat, an aerial artist, a mime, hula hooper, poi spinner, you name it. If it goes on stage and you do it in front of people, I'm all about it. That's what this podcast is for. I'm all about every type of performing. I believe that we all have something in common, and that is we love to entertain people. And that's why I built this podcast. For the sake of entertaining the audience. One of the things that I want to mention when we talk about change and growth is it's a huge part of being a performer. Everything that you do is growing. Every time you learn a new skill, every time you take on a new task, every time you do a show at a new place, you're growing. So this is all I'm talking about. This is why it can be scary to perform someplace new, but you also need to seek out that positive experience of the growth. That you will gain from it. You have a new audience to entertain. You have new skills to show. This is all part of growth. And if you're not doing these things, and this is kind of where I want to go with this, and then I'll get into the reintroduction of this podcast. I just kind of felt like I needed to talk about this. So if you're not growing, if you're not learning new skills, and you do find yourself doing the same thing over and over and over again, seriously consider changing it up. Yes, it's scary. It is. It's going to freak you out. The changes that you may think about having to make and the things that you may have to do. But we have to focus on the positives that are going to come out of the change and the growth that we're going to have. It could be anything. It could be the fact that you want to add a new element into what you're doing. Maybe you're a singer and you want to add some comedy. Maybe you're a comedian and you want to add some singing. A dancer that wants to go into acrobatics or an acrobat that wants to go into breakdancing. It doesn't matter. Adding an element can be scary, but it can also be fun. Learning new skills. Maybe you're learning a new sequence on your aerial silk. Or maybe you're trying out a new style of joke that you've never tried before as a comedian. Maybe as a speaker, you've always been more of a motivational speaker. And now you're getting more into empowerment and more into inspiration and more of these stories and sharing things about yourself with people. This is all growth that's going to help you in the long run. As a performer. And I'm not saying a motivational speaker and an inspirational speaker is a performer. In the same sense of a comedian, just for the record. But if you were on stage and you were in front of people, you are a performer. That's my definition of a performer. So fear the change, absolutely. But don't shy away from it. Just like when you decided to step on stage for the first time. It is scary as hell to think about the people that are out there. What they're going to do. What they're going to say. But in the back of your mind, you know this is something you have to do. And when it's time to change and it's time to grow, it's no different. It's something that you know you have to do. And that's where it is here with the Being On Stage podcast. And no, once again, the podcast is not going away. But I have taken some time and I have stepped back and I've done some research. And I've decided it's time to make a few changes. And one of those changes, and I consider kind of a large change, is. The entire brand, all the colors, the logo, everything is being redone. The website, everything is being redone. I'm actually rebuilding it myself. And that's one of the growing aspects that I've learned. I like designing websites. I'm eventually going to open it up to offer my design skills to performers as well. To design your websites. But right now, I'm working on redesigning the Being On Stage podcast logo, the website. And I've also decided to. Separate out the podcast and the brand. So when I started this podcast, it was Being On Stage. It was only a podcast. So now, the change I'm making, and it's been coming. You know I have a group on Facebook. The Being On Stage group on Facebook. You know I have the Rockstar Lounge that I send out occasional emails to my list. You sign up on the website, you get an email. Hey, welcome, here's the free book. All that stuff. You can still sign up today if you're interested. But that's all changing. I'm still going to have an email list. But Being On Stage is going to be my brand. I'm going to have Being On Stage as the brand. And it'll be the Being On Stage email list. The Being On Stage group. And then the Being On Stage podcast. So the name of the podcast is actually going to change. I don't know if you noticed, but the name of the actual podcast is something like Being On Stage, Improve Your Stage Presence, Connect With Your Audience, or Get Over Stage Fright, or something like that. And it's actually going to change. The title of the podcast is now. And per iTunes is going to be the Being On Stage podcast. I'm changing the name of it. The logo is going to change. So you're going to see a different image when you tune into the podcast. And yeah, so that's all coming. The new website. So with the new website also comes new opportunities. When I say I'm changing it and separating out from the brand, one of the things I'm doing is I'm going to start pursuing. Coaching opportunities. I'm going to open it up to anyone that wants to hop on a call and just chat for like 20, 30 minutes for whatever. You know, whatever's going on with your performing, whatever, you know, wherever you're stuck, wherever you need help, wherever you just need a little push or whatever. I'm going to open up my calendar for you, for anyone to just sign up and hop on there and let's chat. I'm going to have a new giveaway. I'm going to actually be just giving away 10 ways that you can make money performing. And the. The biggest thing, and not really the biggest thing. I lie. It's not really the biggest thing. But one thing that is changing and that I'm kind of really happy about, and there's a couple of different reasons, is the podcasts are no longer going to be numbered. I'm no longer going to have episode 99, episode 100, episode 101. I'm taking away the number completely. Two reasons. One, iTunes doesn't actually like it, it turns out. I found out that in their algorithm of, you know, which podcast. They're more discoverable and things like that. Episode numbers, not really their thing. So that's one reason. But the other reason is, I've decided that having an episode number for me has. It's one, it's maybe set a goal. Like, it's helped me set a goal of, I'm going to do 10 podcasts. I'm going to do five podcasts this month or, you know, something like that. But on the other hand, it's also given me a reason to not podcast sometimes. And this is me, like, sharing 100% authentic behind the scenes. If I see that, hey, you know, I got to get to episode. 90 before the end of the month and I'm on episode 88 and I got a week left I may wait a day to podcast whereas I feel like if I have no numbers there's no reason to just not podcast there's no reason to say well I did you know I did episode 88 89 and 90 this week I can you know I can wait till next week to do the next one I'm a numbers person landing on like a five is a thing for me so if I'm at episode 90 and it's like Thursday I'll wait till Sunday to do 91 it's weird it's a weird little quirky thing about me but I'm going to talk about quirkiness too it's it's a thing quirkiness is awesome your quirks are amazing my quirks are amazing but I feel like if I don't have a number it's one less thing for me to worry about and when I'm feeling like I need a podcast I can just go podcast kind of like what I did today so change is good growth is better you this podcast not not because I want more people but because I want the people that are listening to have more more just more I want you to have more if these changes sound like you're on board and you're in go ahead and click subscribe wherever you listen the podcast and if you want to help me with you know discoverability and having other people easily be able to find this show you could also subscribe to my channel and I'll see you in the next one bye bye you could also go into iTunes and drop a five star rating and a comment it would be awesome actually if you did that so thanks again for tuning in episode 100 will be the last numbered episode from here on out you'll be able to just click on an episode and play it that's the other reason I'm changing the numbers by the way is I feel like if someone goes to listen to this podcast for the first time and they see I'm on episode 99 they may shy away from it because they feel like they've missed something and I never want anyone to feel like they've missed something on this podcast because truthfully I I do I review things constantly and over and over so jump in anywhere really and uh you'll get caught up pretty quickly I always wrap this podcast up and this is one thing that will not be changing keep on shining
