Here is a prize, Mediter will donate $500 to the conservation organization of the winners choosing. I'm your host, Randall Williams, and today we're joined by Brody, Jordan, Omar, Corey, Logan, and Yannis. This is a 10 round quiz show with questions from Mediter's Four Verticals, loosely, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. Mediter Trivia is brought to you by one of our favorite beers, Bush Light. Bush Light. Head for the mountains. Was that paused so that I could ask you why you put me at the bottom of the list? Because he was doing it in the car, which is the order I wish Spencer would do it in, because that's how I need to make a ton of sense for just production purposes. So thank you, Randall. I will do that in the future. When Spencer is here next time, you should suggest that to him. I don't want to do it because it would seem egotistical, but you should just point out that Randall had a really good way of doing this. That's Spencer Place favorite. I don't know where Spencer is right now. I text him. He's in a low punning. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Good to know. Well, today we have an IFAQ. Here's our infrequently asked question segment. If you have a trivia related question for our crew, send it to
[email protected] with the subject line, IFAQ. Andrew M. asks, if you were buying one rifle, parentheses, cartridge, action, any features you would recommend, close parentheses, to be used for Midwest whitetails in black bear, along with being able to do pronghorn, what would it be and why? Looking to buy my first rifle and want one to be able to cover multiple species, would mostly be used for whitetails, but my two other species I hope to harvest would be pronghorn and black bear. And we have Jordan Sillers here, I'm the expert on this and after we cover the question, maybe we can do a little plug for what you have going on, but let's go around the room here. Maybe you should offer a two and we can have sort of a battle over the calendar. That's an interesting format. Wow. I think I'd just go with a good quality, not super expensive bolt action, something like a model 70 or something like that, and 270 winchester, old school, old school, but it does everything. Classic ground. Do you have a threaded muzzle on it? Definitely. Well, at least days you have to, right? Don't act mad about it. That's neat. I think all the, pretty much all the new ones come to you, threaded bear. Just 20 minutes ago in the car he was praising, shooting with a suppressor, how much fun is, son is having so nice Jordan thoughts. Yeah. Bolt action, 65 Creed more. I think that's going to, it's going to serve you well. It's not going to recoil too much and with a suppressor, very pleasant, very pleasant to shoot. I think we'll shoot itself. Yeah. Pretty much. Hopefully not. Corey Logan, Omar. It's bad. This one around 65 PRC. Whew. A little more muscle. I like that. How about the 308? Oh, geez. I personally love 65 PRCs. One thing I did just learn about that was barrel life and I didn't realize how, not that I'm like shooting that many rounds, but like something with like a 308, you have so many more rounds you can shoot through that thing, like the usable life of that barrel is realistically though. How many rounds do you shoot a year? 40. How often do you clean your gun? Probably like 200. Really? Mm-hmm. That's better than I thought. I mean, no offense. Mm-hmm. Oh, way above average. Yeah. But that, I mean, I find that typically, you'll see people say that if you're worried about replacing barrels, you're spending so much money on ammunition and reloading components that the barrels sort of an afterthought. You really have to, unless you're shooting like a 7mm, 338 norm. All right, have we done enough with this one, you guys? Yeah, yeah. I think this guy knows exactly what to get now. I don't think you need to overthink it. Just go real simple. That's right. Easy to find cartridge and, yeah, learn about bullet construction. Jordan. Yes. So, I wanted to let everyone know that BloodTrails Season 3 is out now. So BloodTrails, if anyone hasn't had a chance to listen yet, it's a true crime podcast about hunters and anglers and people outside. So, we cover a different story each episode. We talk with as many people who were involved as we'll talk with us, and that we do a great job putting it together. So, yeah, if you haven't had a chance, check it out. First episode should be out now. It's about a kid up in Minnesota who went hunting with some buddies, disappeared, never came back. They think maybe one of the other kids who was with him had something. Just in time for spooky season, that's right. That's right. And I'm watching y'all in the past notes. What do you guys pass in notes? I don't know. I think you share with the class. He says there's a lint ball on my neck. Did you get it? I don't know. I've been staring at that all day. You got it. Okay, good. I thought it was just a intro here. This episode's off to a rough start. What did you think? Yeah. You said they think, do you think one of the other kids is? Yeah. Is he serious? It's got to be impartial. Yeah. It's possible. The reason they are suspicious is because he said some very suspicious things in the days and months after it happened. Things like, I know where he is, and he also allegedly had some of the missing boy's possessions. This is all allegedly just to be clear. And you also have updates from previous cases that you've done on the show in this season. We do. Yeah. We're going to do in the middle of the season, we're going to do an update episode where we update on anything that's happened in the stories we've covered previously. So and there are several. We actually were able to get a homicide investigation opened in one of the cases that we covered from season two. Wow. Yeah. Well, we were, I mean, I think the family of the victim was very, very happy. Yeah. See where. That was the arson, right? Yeah. He was found in his home home and burned down. He was inside and they never really investigated it as a homicide, even though it should have been. Hmm. Well, that drops this week, right? Yes. The, the new season drops this week. So yeah. Looking forward to that. Yeah. Yeah. I think people like it. Cool. Well, the Sydney index for today's episode is five. So the winner might just get a perfect game. With that, we're off to our game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil. Look, I need to know what I stand to win everything. How's that just tend to win everything? Game on suckers. Question one falls into the category of the cosmos. Polaris or the North Star is the brightest star in which of the following constellations? The question is Polaris or the North Star is the brightest star in which of the following constellations? And your options are A, Orion, B, the Northern Cross, C, the Little Dipper, or D, Canis Major. And those options are Orion, the North Cross, the Little Dipper, or Canis Major. I didn't know it was in a constellation. So it's going to be a challenge. This is a fun episode for you already. Yeah. Ready. We're breaking new ground. Oh, Mark, did you know this? I feel confident, but oh, man, we'll see. This is all stuff that I saw when I was second through fourth grade. Wow. We'll see if it's stuck. I don't remember any of those things from the second to fourth grade. I'm changing. Johnny's changing. Yeah. I reckon that's not going to Johnny. Sorry. Cory's struggling, Brodie, I feel like you're trying to pull a fast one on us. I thought you were writing as I was reading the question. I was. And then you're just still writing. I thought you had a confident answer. Writing. Again, Polaris or the North Star is the brightest star in which of the following constellations? Is it Orion, the Northern Cross, the Little Dipper or Canis Major?
By the end of this, I will have written down all of the possible answers at least one. This is good. This is good. Wait, so what are these verticals? This is the cosmos. No, but what are the verticals? Night time navigation. Randall doesn't limit himself to verticals. Oh, I see. This is one general issue. No, no, no, no. I didn't know these verticals. This seems outside of the normal, you know, for pointing fishing. If you think this is outside of the verticals, wait till we get a little further. Look for it in this game. I think this falls in there. I mean, this is navigation. Yeah, it does. But the way he like introduced it was outside. I think it's fun to read things like the cosmos as a category because categories that we don't repeat are not really categories. Yes, that's one of categories. All right, everybody has their answers. Let's flip them over. Brody says the little dipper. Jordan says the little dipper. Omar says Orion. Cori says the northern cross Logan says the little dipper and Yana says the little dipper the correct answer is C the little dipper or some minor. To end of the handle to find the north star, which is visible all year from the northern hemisphere. Locate the two stars at the end of the big dippers bowl and trace a line about five times that distance beyond them. The north star is the brightest star in Ursa Minor, also called the little dipper or a little bear. I think it's kind of in the right in the middle. I looked at pictures of that this morning when I was double checking this. Yeah, good question. Fascinating stuff. Yeah. Question two. This question is in the category of hunting. A trophy caribou with two brow palmations is said to be a double what? A trophy caribou with two brow palmations is said to be a double what for the longest time. This was my dad's like dream. Yeah, animal. Did he ever go do it? Nope. Omar's got an answer to it now. Oh, yeah. Brody must be confident. Yeah, this is confident. I feel pretty confident. Corey, I thought this would be right in your wheelhouse. It's from a guy from Northwest Montana where caribou are native. I've never seen a caribou. That's because they're all dead in the lower 48. Yeah, right. They're not too many. They come back and forth. Nope. Not anymore. When I was a kid, they did. Yeah. Jordan, do you have an answer? Yes. Are you feeling? How are you feeling about it? Um, you know, we'll, we'll see. We'll see. I think it's just Corey here. Oh, wow, really? I'm sorry to do that to you. That's fine. Caribou is a fascinating animal. All right. Why don't we flip him over here? Brody shovel. Shuffle. Jordan says whammy. Omar says shovel. Corey says bad ass. Logan says basket in the honest is shovel. The correct answer is shovel. A double shovel. Caribou refers to an antler configuration where a bull caribou develops two broad, flattened, spade like brow palmations or shovels. Instead of the usual single prominent front shovel. I was going to make a joke here about. Sheds like shed antlers or how shovels are stored and shed. Double entendre, but I didn't figure that one out. You want to see double shovel watch the. Doug during caribou episode from like season seven. Yeah, he gets one. It's it's one of the first after I learned what it was. It's one of the first things that I. I look for when I see a caribou that makes my eyes bulge. Question three. This question comes to us in the category of fishing. What is the name for a stabilizing float attached to the side of a canoe that keeps the boat from capsizing? There's some pained expressions in the room. I'm curious if you know, I was sitting with my back to the screen. I'm wondering if I'm going to get a better score by not looking at the questions as often. Just like internally going to my brain. We'll see. I have a canoe. Yeah. These do you. Yes. I bought it from a gentleman off Craigslist. Yeah. And he built his own. Nice. And yeah, he let me let me keep them. That's awesome. It's pretty good. This is something I've always wanted. Yeah. I don't know that my answer is right, but I have some at home. Jordan completely unrelated. I saw a while you posted about you were you were making like a walk in cooler. Yes. Do you finish that? Nice. It's awesome. I'm excited to see you mentioned you're going to do like a right up on that. Yeah. I'll do a full like build article. But yeah, I just put a pig in there for a week. Nice. Last week. Did you do the cool bot method? This guy's got a walk in cooler and a canoe with these. Yeah. Consider me envious. No doubt. All right. There's any cell phones on the table. If we get them on the ground or somewhere else. Is everybody. Oh, Mars still got a blank board. I don't think I'm going to go. I'm going to. I could use more time to think about. Yeah. A little more time. A little more time. I know they do it like competitively too. Mm-hmm. And I just I worked on something last week where I saw it. Oh, yeah. Just drawn a blank. Yeah. So the listeners at home. Brody was in his, um, his practically under the table thinking. Oh, yeah. A solid 90 seconds. As soon as I read the question, Brody sort of folded in half. And he straightened up. Like there was like he was a puppet being pulled off the stage. It was like he had a string attached to the back of his shirt collar. Just stiffened right up constantly working on my posture. You know, it's good. It's good. Yeah. What is that thing called? Geez. I thought this was giving him too much time here. This is where I don't find a go forward. All right. Let's flip him over. Brody says, pontoon. Jordan says outrigger. Oh, that's. Omar says nothing. Cory says, kickstand. Logan says, runner. Yani says, outrigger. The correct answer is outrigger. Oh. Nicely done. Outrigger. That's what I wanted to say. and the spectacle bear. Sloth bear, sun bear, Asiatic black bear, giant panda, spectacle bear. What was Jordan's answer again that we're, you, you're Asian black bear. Oh, got it. Okay. I think yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I can't believe Jordan. Thank you. Uh, Sloth bears are found in India and Sri Lanka. Sun bears are found in Southeast Asia. The Asiatic Asiatic black bears found in Asia. Giant panda in China. And the spectacle bear is South America's only native bear species found in the Andes. Yeah. That was a fun question. Question five. This question falls under the category of conservation. In the 1995 film Ace Ventura, when nature calls, ace hides inside a mechanical model of which animal and then emerges from its rear end in a memorable scene. Dang it. Great question. Is there a clip? I'll repeat that. No. In the 1995 film Ace Ventura, when nature calls, Ace hides inside a large mechanical model of which animal and then emerges from its rear end in a memorable scene. Oh, classic. I thought you'd like this one. Yeah, that's a good one. Must have not been that memorable. Yeah. I do think pet detectives a better film though. Do you really? I do. See, I fell in love with one nature calls. I feel like pet detectives a little edge here. That's why I love it. Jordan's got an answer. I got a guess. Yeah, I threatened in an earlier episode. I threatened to do my entire guest-hosted episode as questions about the two Ace Ventura movies and then I chickened out, but I still liked this one. That could be fun with people who've seen those movies. Yeah, yeah, it would be way more key. It would be, it's also more interesting if you haven't seen it. Yeah, honey, are you going to get there? I mean, I'll pick an animal when I have to. Think we're waiting on you and Brody. Keep waiting. Brody's got an answer. Yeah, and he's got an answer. All righty then. Flip him over. I see if he did there. Brody says, whale. Jordan says cow. Omar says, Rhino. Cory says, Rhino. Logan says, Rhino. Nianna says, horse. The correct answer is Rhino. A horse would be pretty interesting. I've got some lengthy flavor text here. Ace Ventura, when nature calls is the sequel to 1994's Ace Ventura pet detective with Jim Kerry returning as the title character. When the film begins, Ace Ventura is living in a Tibetan monastery after a rescue mission goes wrong. When a British adversary named Fulton Greenwald tracks him down and asks for help. A sacred white bat known to the locals as Shakaka has gone missing in African without a wedding met to two rival tribes cannot proceed. Ace travels to Africa where his unorthodox and basic investigation methods get him in trouble with both tribes. In the meantime, Ace uncovers a scheme by outsiders who want the tribes to go to war. In the end, he recovers the bat and saves the wedding. And this is part of his investigation is when he gets in this rhino. Nice. It's a great image. It's great image. What's Jim Kerry up to these days? He's lost his marbles. Has he though? I don't know. He's kind of like a good don to this like philosophical route. And I don't know. I watch an episode of him and comedians and cars getting coffee and I feel like he's all there. Oh, good. Good to know. Phil, we're now halfway through our game of trivia. Can I have a scoreboard update? Yes, you may. Wow. What a game. It's a pretty close game. Omar and Corey, as well as Logan, have two points each. Jordan and Brody are tied up in a second place with three points. And Yannis is in first place with four. Anybody's game. Wow, exceptional. This is the best I've ever done in trivia. All right. It's time for our draft kings question of the week. Thanks to draft kings for sponsoring today's question of the week. One question, one shot and a chance to prove you know your stuff. Let's get into it. And this is a bonus question. So it's not going to count towards your final scores. Here's the question. The largest public university in Vermont's athletic teams are named for this eight letter word and old New England name for the Cougar. I'll read that again. But this actually has nine letters. It's a nine letter word. Somehow that got lost in translation. I can edit this on the fly. Yeah, don't read too much into it. In no way should this reflect on the sponsor of the question of the week. That's my error. Yani's got an answer. I've got the answer. Brody's got the answer. Does this does this question count in the game or just a bonus? There's just a bonus. I really wish it counted. Me too. It's a good one. No, I'm good. This is great. I like the question. Logan's thinking. But I will I'll add my own flavor text to this. Please do. I don't have any later. Okay. Cory's looking. Omar's looking. Logan's erasing. Jordan's looking. We're not going to get there. I wouldn't wager on me. Give up. The answer. Well, reveal your answers. Please. Brody says cat amount. And Yani says cat amount. The correct answer is cat amount. Thanks again to draft Kings for sponsoring today's questions. Remote cabins. Quiet mornings in the woods. Places people go to get away. But instead get more than they bargained for. And then all of a sudden my buddy is radioing back and saying you know we're hit on bring guns. I believe someone at the cabin knew something happened to know. Who throws their dead family member in a suburban and drives him straight to the funeral home. The husband of this dead wife immediately calling his mistress from the funeral home. When Brian finally gave up the body his body was found on my turkey lease. So for four or five or six years I sat probably within a hundred yards of Mike's body. Murder. Disappearance. Betrayal. And questions that refuse to stay buried. I'm Jordan Sillers. And this is Blood Trails. Get season three now wherever you listen to podcasts. I don't think it's strictly a new England name. All right. There's a boat ramp. You know what I mean? I used to take out a place called Cadamount in Colorado and I've seen it. Well, it might have come out. Oh, sure. I'm just saying. It might have originated in New England. I'm sure it did. All right. I'm not going to find it. You could see that name. You could see it anywhere. I rest my case. Question six. This question falls into the category of fishing. What is the name for the woven wicker basket traditionally worn by anglers on a strap over the shoulder or hip used to hold freshly caught fish? I'll repeat that question. Cory. Quick answer. Reminds me of a great movie. I'll probably heard of a river runs through it where they're all rocking one of these. Have you ever worn one of these? They they were still around when I was a little kid. I never have. They sold one at Walmart. Oh, really? When I was growing up. Yeah. There's and there's one that they had. It was just like it wasn't actually wicker. It wasn't a basket. It was a bag. Right. Sort of insulated with drain holes. Yeah. And it used to be like I was told you would put fresh
wet grass in there with fish to help keep them cool. Yani, you know the answer? I do. But yeah, that's one of my favorite scenes from that movie is when the dad old Tom scared it. Yeah, he's like, well, the good lord is blessed to us all. It's just that he's been particularly kind to me today. He lays down his big old slab. That's great. Jordan and Omar's got an answer. I gotta get John a blank here. Logan, I mean, I don't think it's right, but I've got something written. All right, reveal your answers. Rodi says Creel. Jordan without an answer. Omar says Quiver. Corey says Creel with a K. Yeah, that corn Creel. Logan says Stringer. Yana says Creel. The correct answer is Creel. It Creel's woven construction allows air to circulate. So the fish stays cool and doesn't spoil. The word also gives us Creel limit, the legal cap on how many fish and angler may keep. And Creel survey, the name for the interview is fisheries biologist conduct with anglers to estimate catch and fishing pressure. It's also a great scene when that old boys get sunburned after going fishing and drinking. I liked that guy because he just wanted to fish with worms. Yeah, yes, yes. All right, question seven. This question falls into the category of gun stuff. What six letter term refers to the stacked internal parts of a firearm suppressor that redirect and slow expanding gases to reduce the sound of a gunshot. It wouldn't be a Randall episode without a gun stuff question. Maybe get another one. I like these. Yeah, I like gun stuff. These are out my alley. Sydney got this one like that. I was quite pleased. Hopefully I got this right because like a word just came to my mind. I'm like, hopefully that's usually that's good strategy, right? You're not looking at the thing. You're just like, yeah, that's right. Only thing I don't like about these is cleaning them. Oh, geez. What a pain. Does that change your point of impact? Pretty significantly. One of my friends just cleaned his suppressor. I have to say I haven't cleaned enough of them to really know. Yeah, I would think not. Yeah. I know because it's not supposed to be hitting anything on that, you know. We've all got answers. Let's flip those boards over. Brody says baffle. Jordan says baffle. Omar says muzzle. Cory says baffle. Logan says baffle. Yannis says baffle. The correct answer is baffle. Baffle. Excuse me. Baffles create a series of chambers inside the suppressor that trap the hot high pressure gas leaving the barrel and release it slowly. Which lowers the sound of the shot. They come in several designs, including cone shaped and flat disc styles and are commonly made of metals like stainless steel or titanium. That's question seven more more baffles the better. Yep. Yep. That's what they say, I think. On to question eight. This question falls into the category of cooking. This Wisconsin based company founded in 1945 is the top selling brand of bratwurst in the United States. What is its name? Such a Randall question. I thought maybe we'd had this question, but. I'll read it again. What is its name? We ate some of these during my recent elk hunting trip. This reminds me of the live tour. I made some wild game brought to we'll be going on where I'll eat brats. Oh, yes, we're going to eat alone. I made some wild game brats last year that. They just don't compete with these things. Yeah. Yeah. There are like four German brought shops in the street directly behind the Milwaukee theater that the live tour is going to be on. Yeah, tickets are going fast. I will say that this is a shameless plug, not scripted, but. I think we're close to 90% sold out of all tickets. So if you want tickets, go find them. That's awesome, man. Des Moines, Iowa is where we. Folks really need to. To get after that's where they're lagging behind. So all you proud Iowans out there. Thank you. Thank you to the multiple people from Michigan who gave me a tiki bar rack and Grand Rapids. Yeah, I will be there. I have a little itinerary document going film. Great. We've all got an answer. Bring me along. So I haven't been doing any kind of planning. You can do. You can do all the stuff. I'll be mad if you don't come. Okay. Perfect, Phil. Corey. Yeah, I'm worried you're going to be mad at me. I'm worried that you're doing so poorly. I'm actually having a pretty nice comeback. One of the other people to fall apart. Flip those boards over. Brody says Johnsonville. Johnson says Oscar Meyer. Omar says ballpark. Corey says ballpark. Logan says Johnsonville. Janice says Johnsonville. It was there. The correct answer is Johnsonville. The brand takes its name from the hometown of its founders. Ralph and Alice Stayer. Well, their sausages were initially only available to Wisconsinites. Johnsonville increased its sales 20 fold in the 1980s. The Spanish distribution nation wide. It remains privately owned. And Johnsonville sausages can be purchased in more than 45 countries. Wow. Amazing. I spent some time on their website today. And let me tell you, it makes me feel good about eating Johnsonville brats. That's still only a quarter of the countries that Kiwi Shoe Polish can be found in. Wow. You mind like a steel trap. Phil, we've got two questions left in our game of trivia. How's that scoreboard? He's holding a grudge from his shoe polish question. Got a little bit more of a spread now going on. Omar is in the back of a train with two points. We've got Jordan Logan and Corey tied up with four. Brody has six. Janice is still on first with seven now. Oh, back and field Brody's nippin nippin. Oh boy. Question nine. This question falls under the category of gun stuff. Yes. In the realm of handguns, what does the abbreviation S-A-O stand for? Oh. Is an abbreviation not an acronym? Oh, goodness gracious. It's an acronym. What's changed that? Sorry for this hastily prepare. I forgot to bring my computer home last night. When you had to go home and fix your dishwasher. Yeah. Yeah. I had a big stack of books that I was carrying. And I put them on my desk and forgot that my computer was under them. So this episode was hastily prepared this morning. Quite fun with me. I'm enjoying my stuff. Thanks for pointing that out. Yes. What does the acronym S-A-O stand for? What does the acronym S-A-O stand for in the realm of handgunnery? The dishwasher is not fixed. I just ordered replacement parts. All the stuff that bent. Well, that's nice to know that there is such a thing as replacement parts for those. I just figured you'd have to buy a new dishwasher. No, not if the dishwasher price dishwasher is going for. Did you scare your dog when you went down? Jeez. I'm bad luck with all kinds of mechanics. No, I don't, I don't really remember anyone's reaction. Truthfully, when I hit the floor, my face was pointing down. So I didn't really see anybody else's reaction. We've got one, I didn't take note, Jordan, but I assume that you wrote this one down fairly quickly and you feel confident. I feel fairly confident, though. I don't know that I've seen this term as an acronym very much. So it is possible. I'm totally off base, but I think I got it. Corey. Yeah, we'll see. Doesn't really matter at this point. Because I got Johnsonville wrong. Though you wrote it down. I did. Yeah, ballpark. Ballpark's not really brought worse, are they? No, but there's also right. They're all good. They're all good. Brody and Yarnas still chewing Logan. You've got an answer. I've got an answer. I don't think it's right. Omar, are you still working there? I think I'm going to put the cap on the marker. I don't, I don't got an answer. Really working for me. You got a guess board, bud. You're leaving a lot of. You've learned a lot of blank. There's no points for leaving a blank board. See, all right. Just write down something crazy. Yarni, how are you? Not great. Not great. Yeah, you just let me know because I'm just trying to think of. I'm going to look at Brody. Let's start with. Oh, let him, let him go. Let him go. go for a minute. I don't want to be accused.
of influencing the outcome of the game. Sydney also got this one. Really? Well, I counted it. She got, she got two of them right. That's how many I got. That's, um, is that count for us then? No, no, not at all. Johnny scoreboards or the clock on the scoreboard is ticking. All right. All right. Flip them over. Brody says semi automatic only Jordan says single action only. Omar says semi automatic offset. Cory says safety always off. Jordan said Logan says shooter assisting optics. Johnny says shiny auto operator. We have a correct answer in the room.
