This is an iHeart podcast, Guaranteed Human. Hey, you might ask, do you need camel on your feet in camp? And I'd say need probably not. There are generally no deer in camp. If you got deer in your camp, I want to hear about it, because that sounds like a sweet camp. But still, we made two shoes with Haydude in first light specter camel anyway, not because you need it just because it's cool. The wally funk and the wally slip camp, because it's the pattern we love and we wanted something comfortable and ultra lightweight for when we're done hunting, okay? Out now at haydude.com and the meat eater store, it's a limited run, so get your feet cozy now. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. And there is a prize. Meat Eater will donate $500 to the conservation organization of the winners choosing. I'm your host Yannis Patelis and today we're joined by Brody Henderson, Mark Kingyan, Spencer NewHearth, Randall Williams, Matt Miller, and Laura Muscarry. This is a 10 round quiz show with questions from Meat Eater's four verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. Meat Eater Trivia is brought to you by one of our favorite beers, Bush Light. Bush Light, head for the mountains. All right, we're going to start off today with a mail bag question. If you have a question, you want the trivia crew to answer then send your question with the subject line mail bag to
[email protected]. Brett R wrote in to ask, "Brent or Brett, Brett, two teas." I have a bit of hunting, a bit of a hunting fishing predicament that I need some advice on. My dad was the one who got me into hunting and fishing and I have since passed that on to my daughter. The issues we are having are when we plan a trip, my dad goes over the top with everything, over packing, knows everything about everything, and always corrects my daughter. He's trying to correct his daughter from trying new things and new places. He's like limiting her experience. It's kind of making hunting and fishing with him unbearable. My daughter doesn't really get excited anymore about them, which is crushing meat. When I will plan a trip, then he invites himself and for lack of better terms ruins it. I'd appreciate some advice on how to approach this subject with him. Man, tricky. Just have some father-daughter trips. The granddaddy doesn't need to go on every trip. That's a good one. And then just have A grandfather trip and just daughter, you're just going to have to suck it up for a couple of days, I know it's rough. So when you make the one that's only the dad-daughter and then grandpa comes in, he's like, "Hey, I'm bringing the camper and I've got Friday night dinner covered." I would explain to him that, "Look, I just want some kind of quality time with my daughter." Okay. Anybody else? I think I would just have a honest conversation with Dad in a nice way, like a little compliment sandwich maybe in there. Like I love hanging out with you and hunting and sharing this time with my daughter, but here's a couple of things we've noticed and hopefully you've got a good enough relationship with your dad. You can have that be okay. His dad is probably just super excited to be involved and he's overdoing it, you know? I just tell him you want her to figure out some stuff on her own. And I think the dad should acknowledge with the daughter like, "Hey, I see this is happening too. I know that sucks for you. You know what? Tell that's no fun. Like, you know, I'm sorry, it's that way. It's just like, granddad is just that excited to hang out with us and we'll try to correct that in the future. And like, you're not doing anything wrong. It's not on you. I think that would go a long ways too if you were like, "Hey, I'm also seeing that this is happening. I'm sorry for that." You know what? If Spencer would ever, you know, level up from cats, I think you'd be a great dad. I know that's what I tell him. Yeah. Right? All the fates, Spencer. Too selfish, though. Yeah. Anybody else want to add to this? I just think you could, you could even say one of the things I most appreciated about our time hunting when I was young was you let me figure things out on my own. Dad. And I don't want us to like, do everything for so and so, don't forget. But then he's going to say, well, now I know you're lying through your teeth because I never let you figure things out for yourself. Right. This isn't how he always was, you know? Right. Because Brett had a good hunting. Yeah. He loves him. He loves it. Man, I think we solved this one. Yeah. That was good. That was good. We should just do more up, Matt. I mean, I would just say like, it's a great opportunity for a gentle reminder that some of the best opportunities for learning or to make mistakes. Yeah. Some of my most fond memories were getting out with my dad. And I just think it's, yeah, an opportunity to really tell him like, hey, there's time in a place. And like what Brody said, sometimes just had out on your own trip. Man. Yeah. You guys are good because I would have just taken it straight to chill the out, man. Wow. That's a good sense of you. It makes you sound like it's impossible to get away. Maybe you're over sharing your plans. I like to keep a bit of secrecy. Yeah. You know what you're right. I do. I kind of share everything I got going on. Tell him, tell him you're going to do like a Barbie doll convention or something. Yeah. Just why. All right. Let's get on to the game. The Jennifer index for today is a five. Ooh. All right. Now that was with a little bit of help, but I gave her five, it was like a four and a half to five. So our winner should could get 10 correct answers, putting us on perfect game alert. And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Bill. Look, I need to know what I stand to win everything. How's that just tend to win everything? Game on suckers. All right. We're sending Spencer a note right now on Slack. Uh-oh. As always, please help the first question is multiple choice. And this week, it's also our listener submitted question, which was sent in by Brian Birkley. Sorry if I mispronounced that rhyme. For submitting this great question, Brian will receive a $150 gift card from first light. If you want a chance to win a listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia at themeetor.com. The question is, what animal did Steve Hunt on the very first episode of Meetor? So today, Mountain Goat, B, Black Bear, C, Blacktail deer, or D, have a Lena. Brody quick to answer. Randall's also writing. Maybe he's drawing. I'm drawing. He's drawing the answer. No, I'm drawing something unrelated to the answer. Okay. I think it's a good question. A, Mountain Goat, B, Black Bear, C, Blacktail deer, or D, have a Lena. Do you guys watch this show? No. Yeah. I don't care for it, but my wife, she loves this show. Just like Walking Dead, I watched the first two seasons that I was out. Yeah. Does everybody have an answer? Steve, get this one right, you think? I think he will. Probably not. It depends on if he's brought in so much information that there's things kind of leaking out in the back now. But I don't know. Guys got kind of a steel trap for a brain like you, too, as well. Everybody having an answer? All right. Go ahead and reveal your answers, please. Randy says Mountain Goat, Mark, Blacktail deer, Spencer, Blacktail, Laura, Mountain Goat, Matt, Blacktail, Brody, Black Bear. The correct answer is C, Blacktailed deer. Wow. All right. Brody had that one. Jeez. In episode one of season one, Steve Hunt's Blacktailed deer on Prince of Wales Island. Episode two, he hunts black bears. Well, that was the real one somewhere in Alaska. Mountain Goat's in episode four and have a Lena in episode nine. I had nothing to do with producing the first season. In season two, which was filmed 14 years ago. I helped on the dull sheep and caribou hunts and the rest is history. There are 12 seasons of meat eater available on YouTube right now and it is a great entertainment to go back and watch the old ones. I feel like we could actually rebrand it as young meat eater because all of us look like kids in those early episodes. All right. On to question two. This is conservation. This bird listed as vulnerable by the IUCN adorns the lid of the world's most famous shoe polish.
Oh, I don't know, man, I thought that this was going to be an easy one. I was like, this is a great question. So I could check my shoe polish any of us own shoe polish? No, Randall keeps a 10 of shoe polish in his pocket at all. Oh, no, that's not a shoe polish. (laughs) Vulnerable. I think I have some shoe polish. No idea. Yeah, I feel like, well, I don't want to give too many hints here. You guys, it looks like, the room looks like they need hints. I can see the thing in my head, I just don't know anything. This bird listed as Vulnerable by the IECN adorns the lid of the world's most famous shoe polish. Hmm. I can't even think of a Vulnerable bird at the moment. Let alone shoe polish. Hmm. Jeez. What a stumper. Sorry, I was just trying to pitch some softballs. This is an easy one for old Jennifer Jones. Really? Why does she know this? Does she polish as Yannish? (laughs) I do have a 10 that I usually once a year when I go to the one wedding or whatever function where I have to wear a suit and a pair of shoes and I bust out the 10 and, kind of. He's got one of those high raised chairs. They have in midtown from the '50s and six-town snaps Jennifer over. My plan is always to bring my shoes through the airport so I can actually get them shined up by a professional. But not even, you wouldn't even wear them on that trip. You would just travel with them to get them polished. No, no, no, no, no, okay. That's one of those things that I saw as a kid. I thought, I'll do that someday when I'm an adult. And look at you now. No, closer. Yeah, it feels so demeaning. I do think I have some shoe polish in my reloading cabinet. I'm in a good place for shoe polish. All right, if you don't have an answer, you just gonna show me a blank board. Go ahead and reveal. Randall says Emu, Mark, whooping crane, Spencer, Piliated Woodpecker, Laura Penguin, Matt, Emu, Brody, Flamingo, folks, that's a zero percenter. The answer is Kiwi. Oh, that's gonna write Kiwi, too. Is that now that I say it? Does that see it? Can people see him? No, that's it. Kiwi shoe polish has been available in 180 countries and accounts for half of the global shoe polish market. The brand was started in 1906 by a Scottish Australian who named it after his wife, who was from New Zealand. The Kiwi known for its long beak is a flightless bird about the size of a chicken. But closely related to the ostrich, it lays an egg that is one of the largest in proportion to the bird itself up to 25% of the female size. That would be like 150 pound woman giving birth to a 37.5 pound baby. Oh, that's good. That's got to play your text. The Kiwi's list is vulnerable, being upgraded from endangered in 2017 due to recovery efforts. The main threats to Kiwi are predators, such as stoats, dogs, and feral cats. Jennifer and I spent five weeks in New Zealand in '05 on our honeymoon and did not see a Kiwi, but we did meet a lot of nice Kiwis and caught a few giant New Zealand trout, which is what I was really after. Wow, that's good. Question two. Does it look like an amoe? Sorry. No, it doesn't look like an amoe. It sounds like it looks like an ostrich. Uh, no, they're just closely related. I wasn't actually trying to get a point. They're smaller than an amoe. It looks like a woodcock. No, they are the size of a chick. OK, the size. It's kind of like a woodcock. OK, that's got that kind of vibe. But way bigger. Yeah, OK. All right, question three. The blank law was created in 1998 in Colorado after a bull elk named blank was poached near Estus Park. So the two blanks wrote this for Brody. You know, once I was reading this today and doing it with Jennifer, I said, yeah, Brody's going to get this one. Everyone should get it. So the law was named after this bull elk. That doesn't help. Nope. So easy. Brody, do you feel like it's a hard question? I feel like I'm being honest. Like there was enough national attention that some people shouldn't know it. Yeah, yeah, folks like work in the hunting industry. You know this Randall? No, not at all. I was 12 years old. Yes, I was going to ask Spencer, help you in 1990. That's six years old. Yeah, 11. I mean, this isn't an unfamiliar concept to me. Like I would think I've heard the story, but I don't. Don't have the name of the bull. OK, one more time, the blank law was created in 1998 in Colorado after a bull elk named blank was poached near Estus Park. I'm pretty sure they made a statue of this thing. They sure did. How old are you in 1998, bro? I'm going to change my into a joke. It's not important, Matt. All right, let's go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says tiny. Mark says Rocky. Spencer Magnus. Laura Blank. Matt Estus Bull. Question mark. Brody says Samson. Technically it's Sam, son, no pee, but I think we'll give it to him. In 1996, a giant thousand pounds, seven by nine bull elk was poached outside of Estus Park. Colorado's parking in outrage. The fine assessed the poach of the time did not seem to fit the crime. So the Samson law was created to add monetary punishment to animals whose headgear had trophy status. So now a trophy pronghorn will carry an additional $4,000, an elk $10,000, and a half curl or bigger, big horn sheep carry an extra fine of $25,000. I used to think, I guess I support the law. But why not have it be that way for-- because it de-values animals that aren't troke. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I think we've spoken with someone through the years about this, right? Because in general, to me, it seems like wildlife violations don't have enough teeth. You know, they don't really bite. Because you're like, oh, the guy did this, this, and this, and it cost him $400, it's like people just pay the fine. Be great if it was that way for everything. All right, on to question four. This one is in cooking. Cook's Illustrated defines this seven-letter word as, a small, cylindrical, heavy-duty ceramic or stoneware baking dish designed for single-serving recipes. Oh, no. I'm making it too hard again. Oh, I'm not sorry. Oh, Brody thinks he knows it. He's got to put his head down, meditate, Randall wrote a word. I think I know this only. Spencer's got his board down. Did you write down the seven letter? I'm afraid I've done this question. Yeah, that's the only reason I know it. Oh, did we need a new one that? No, I don't think that's how it works. That's where I learned this word. I've seen it since then. Well, hey, listen, I did my best. I checked it against the-- Yeah, and he checked it with me. There's our last line of defense. I pulled out one he had that I knew he had done before. But I did this one. I didn't flat. Yeah, I don't think we should spend too much time beating ourselves up over this. I've got to hold a dig myself out of it. Brody seems to be stumped, so. Yeah. And also, as well, it's not going to come to me out. I'm going to go for us. I'm going to go home and break these things up. All right, I'm going to repeat the question. Cook's Illustrated defines a seven letter word as a small, cylindrical, heavy-duty, ceramic, or stoneware-baking dish, designed for single-serving recipes. I'm glad you said that Spencer. Now I feel better about my answer. But I could be wrong. I'd never heard of this. We are not wrong. If you came up with an answer, you'd know it. Like, I feel like it's all or nothing. All right. We'll see. Brody, do you need more time? No, it's just not. I can tell it's not coming. All right, go ahead and reveal your answers. It's better worked in our-- Randy, he says, "Ramican," Mark Blank, Spencer, "Ramican," Laura, "Ramican," Matt, Mortis, Brody, without an answer. The correct answer is "Ramican." The correct spelling is R-A-M-E-K-I-N. "Ramicans are commonly used for soufflé, crème brûlée, and chocolate molten kink." I once saw Chef Andrew Ragellowski make single-serving squirrel-pot pies in "Ramican." That's what I used them for. Not necessarily squirrel, though. They're usually about three and a half inches wide and hold eight ounces of fill to the brim. At our house, they're commonly used to serve ice cream. The small size of a ram can make it easy to limit my ice cream portions, which I need. Oh, yeah, me too. My wife loves them for a good girl dinner. She's just doing like a charcoot-ery board that's got-- this one has some nuts, this one has a sprout. This one's got some fruit. All my ramekins got to go through the dishwasher after a girl dinner. Hold on, you call it a good girl dinner? - Yeah.
No, a girl dinner that's good girl dinner. It's become a hit phrase in the last five years where it's like instead of my supper being a steak and potatoes, it's going to be like just a grazing board of like eight different things that are of small proportions. Oh, that would be a girl. That would be a question. It's a hot pot. That's a hot pot. It's a hot pot. It's a good way to put it. It was on live's trivia I think two years ago as well. Interesting. Yeah, quite a landscape going there Randall. Randall is really working up. Show that to the camera so everybody can see what you got going on. That's going to be too close. Maybe that's going to be good. Yeah, it's a little off focus, but it's fine. We can see it. No, Phil, that's just how mountains and evergreens. That's just how blurry it is. When we had the question for girl dinner, Seth's wife Kelsey was like, the only thing I can think of is girl dinner and then the whole room got her right? All right, we're on a question five. This one is it's kind of a half conservation, half fishing. Oh, interesting. About five miles south of Thermopolis, Wyoming, the blank river changes its name to the blank river at a location called the wedding of the waters. So we need two answers. You need two answers. You need the names of two rivers, which are technically one river. One time, I cried a great big rainbow in this very spot on a Chartreuse egg pattern. Chartreuse. I think no use. Again, the question five, about five miles south of Thermopolis, Wyoming, the blank river changes its name to the blank river at a location called the wedding of the waters. Big rainbow. We'll see. Were we together on that trip? You wrote this episode for Brody. Is this so? Do you still have the street going where you've won every episode that I've hosted? No, I lost one in there somewhere. Do you remember Joel Norricain? Yeah. Yeah, he got it. Great. Big one there too. All right, one more time. Five miles south of Thermopolis, Wyoming. The blank river changes its name to the blank river at a location called the wedding of the waters. Randall and Mark. Oh, I think I have a you guys know your western geography. Oh, the scary as Randall does. I have fished here and I cannot remember. Can you remember one of them? I think so. All right. It's good. Matt's out. All right. Everybody's got their answers. Go ahead and reveal your boards, your answers. No, I didn't get any of them right. Randi says don't even worry about it. Something in powder river. Mark says big horn and wind river. He's got his first circle green and wind. Laura, wise and big horn Matt, silken powder. Brody says wind river and big horn river. The correct answer is the wind river changes into the big horn river. No one really knows why this is the case. There are lots of theories on the internet. The interesting geography of the area makes it seem like they are two separate rivers. The wind is 185 miles long and the big horn is 276 miles long. If you combine the two for a total 461 miles, the river is the longest tributary to the Yellowstone River. The powder river is a close second at 375. And if you add in the south fork of the powder river, it goes to 550 miles, which would make it Yellowstone's longest tributary. This naming stuff is not dialed. Brody and I have fished the wind and the big horn rivers on the same day. If I can remember correctly, I caught a bunch of big ones and Brody did not, although the story he told earlier contradicts that. Bill, it's time for a scoreboard update. The many times I've met Jennifer, she's been such a lovely person, but her index is shit. Because here we are. Right. We've got. Still in it, baby. Everyone's on the board. Randall, Laura, and Matt, I'll have one point. Because I think I have more of the right than that. You don't, I just double-checked. Right on her mind, there's a trail of bias from the people who have challenged Matt. Well, I think the second half is going to be much easier. Mark Spencer and Brody have two points, and they are all tied up in the lead. Can't. Okay. Jennifer's going to win this episode. I know. She just might. She just might. Mediter and best-selling author Brian Burrow present Gun Fighters, a new podcast series about the American West and the violence that made its most legendary figures infamous. Davis Tutt staggered forward, shouted, "Boys, I'm killed!" A kill over death. From notorious killers to bloodfeeds in Texas, Gun Fighters strips away the myth to get at the reality. Who these men really were. And what they actually did. The first great Gun Fighter, John Wesley Harding, killed at least 26 men before he turned 21 years old. It helped you know that he was pretty much a complete cycle path. Listen to Gun Fighters, starting on September 15th on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And get your shooting irons. These stories don't miss. [MUSIC] All right, question number six. Keesh Blank is made with bacon or ham and cheese. This question is in the cooking category. Can't that just be Keesh? Yeah, I thought that was a Keesh. The hell, yeah. Do you mean Keesh is made with blank bacon or ham and cheese? Keesh Blank. Yeah, this is a Keesh challenge. Yeah, it's really the only Keesh that has a name. This is not on the girl dinner menu. I think it could be. I've never been a fan of Keesh myself. How about you Randall? We three years go we're hosting Christmas at our house and we're in Costco grocery shopping and we saw those big Keesh and we're like, oh, you know, it's great. It's two pack and that'll be like a breakfast for eight people or whatever. And those things are still in my freezer. Can I have one? Yeah. Thank you. We make single serving Keesh's not but just in muffin tins and the girls eating for breakfast. I thought you said it was going to be easier. Again, Keesh Blank, I thought everybody knew what this Keesh is called. Did you eat this on your honeymoon? I did not. Did you and Brody eat these at the side of the winter? We did not. Keesh Blank is made with bacon or ham. It's going to be really obvious word. It's going to make me mad. Is this in the joy of cooking? Definitely. I'm going to look it up later. Let's see. Okay, is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randy says, Panchetta, Mark, Porcini, Spencer Pig, Laura Keesh, Matt Lorraine, Brody Keesh, American, Matt got it. Keesh Lorraine is the correct answer. All Keesh is originated in the Eastern French region of Lorraine. The original recipe was actually made without cheese and a bready dough more similar to pizza crust was used as opposed to the puff pastry or short crust used today. Pears believe that a Keesh can only have three ingredients. Eggs, cream, and bacon. The rest of us will take eggs, cream, salt, and anything else you'd like to add to the mixture. I like them all, but somehow I like the original the best. You guys have Keesh you like the best? I got to like spinach and fettin' all that other stuff. I'm kind of like, yeah, yeah, but it's just eggs and bacon and cheese. I like some sweet varieties of Keesh. No, I think it's just a pie. Yeah, kind of just turns into some kind of a custard maybe. We are learning a lot about Yannis's life in this. Yeah, I do like the fun facts. All right, question seven. The blank of a tint. A lot of blank questions in this game. Is an extra piece of fabric that matches the floor size and is designed to protect the floor fabric. And keep it drier. This one falls under the gear category. And I also believe it falls under the easy category. Jennifer, when I asked her this question, she said, that's too easy. You should throw it out. The blank is a great question. Yeah, I like it a lot. I almost said the same thing to Yannis actually, like no joke, when I read this question, but the other ones are kind of hard. So I thought this is going to be a good balance. Yeah. The blank of a tint is an extra
piece of fabric that matches the floor size and is designed to protect the floor fabric and keep it drier. I made this I made the same mistake, Brody. I jumped ahead put down an answer for a different piece of fabric and then just the last second caught myself. Yeah, you were right for sure, Brody. Different. Don't say I can not overthink this one. I want to see a Brody honest fight. This whole game has been about their close relationship. The question is the blank of a tint is an extra piece of fabric that matches the floor size and is designed to protect the floor fabric and keep it drier. I hope the flavor text references a camping trip that you took together. Brody forgot. We still laugh about it today. It's like slum dog millionaire. At this point in the episode I was running out of time for flavor text. So they're just getting you know lighter and lighter. Okay. Brody's writing something down here. It's the name of his reporter with Brody and Steve. This really does seem to be anyone's game though right now. Yeah. Yeah. It's one board update. Maybe. I think either one. It's giving both. Maybe I should. I'm gonna I got a boy. Oh, maybe I should have given him a letter account. Mm-hmm. Randall, give me one of those erasers. We're shortening racer down here. Oh, I've got three. I can argue. Careful. One of them stains your board brown. Everybody's ready. Go ahead and show me your answers. Randall says footprint. Mark footprint. Spencer footprint. Laura footprint. Matt footprint. Brody footprint. Hundred percent. Would you have accepted ground cloth? No, because it doesn't necessarily match the floor. But it doesn't necessarily not. Tent footprints can extend the life of your tent, but I personally don't think they're worth the wait. Maybe if I was going on a long trip right now, I would be saying the tent on extremely abrasive surfaces every night. Back it along. What was the room thing? If you're camping, why not have it? If you're now like weight conscious, you should always put down a foot. And I'll give you our camping. Good. Where we camp for our youth hunt. There's a lot of wild rose there. Mm-hmm. And I had that stuff a sleeping pad once. Oh, really? I've got a real I've got a real sleeping bag sleeping pad problem right now. Yeah. Can't find the leak. Can't find the leak. Yeah, it's a real issue. And you tried the whole soapy water. Oh, yeah, and I found a leak. And it's still leaking. Oh, calls from inside the house. I wish there was a guy in town that would just fix your mattress for cheap. That'd be a great business. Different flex seal. I don't think it would be great. Oh, you know about going through airports. This is not even related at all. There's like people who offer to fix your phone battery when you go through the airport. And I'm like maybe I should just stop and do that sometime. I just I go to the airport just to get my phone battery fixed. Yeah, you see him all the time now. I bet it's cheap. There's never a line. But they're also probably stealing my dad. It seems suspicious. It seems highly suspicious. Let me just mess with your electronics really quickly before you get on an airliner. On to question number eight. This six letter word describes an acidic water logged peat bog found in northern boreal and arctic zones of Alaska and Canada. Randall with a quick answer. Brody is well. The rest of the room is rereading the question. Randall, I learned this word from the video game we've been playing recently. Oh, good. Yeah. A lot of a lot of ducks and moose up there. Good, good, good. Yeah, man, I can't believe that area I found today. Maybe you should just it's this target rich environment. Maybe you should just skip the real hunting. Yeah. Uh-huh. You know, he's he's getting close. I'll be honest. Yeah, right now. Don't have to deal with that bad weather and get tired and hike it up hills and get your hands bloody. Yeah. Yeah. Plus, you can sell all the animals. This game and buy new guns. All right, Brody and Randall have answers. The rest of the room is stumped. This is one of those where as soon as you reveal it. Yeah, to what I've seen. Oh, yeah. Not there. You two, I would suspect that out of the four left without answers have probably trod through said peat bog. Brody and I spend a night camping. Yeah, we certainly definitely have. Yeah. Yeah, that's a problem is that camping where these things are found is very difficult because of the moisture content. Even with the footprint. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, give up. You're not going to get the players that don't have any answer. Really. I'll not get it. It's like there's a little ball sort of maybe jostling around in Mark's head that's bouncing from side to side is hoping it's going to knock the answer loose. Yes. Actually, it's right there. I can see it now. Oh, we can see it. I can see the survivor, man, dude, saying this word. I can't let's drought. Yup. I can't get it. Yes, that's right. That will someone that might come in the flavor test. Mark's giving up. Randy says musk egg. Mark not an answer. Spencer swamp marsh. Laura. No answer. Matt swamps. Brody musk egg. Their correct answer is musk egg. We at the meat eater production crew have hike through countless miles of musk egg on different Alaska shoots. Most often it seems like we find ourselves sloshing through musk eggs when we're in pursuit of black till deer or moose musk egg forms in cool rainy regions where poor drainage creates waterlogged acidic conditions that stunt plant growth. Slow decomposition of submerged plant debris leads to the accumulation of peat eventually forming musk egg deposits over 30 meters deep musk eggs can be dangerous. Although it resembles a grassy plain musk egg is actually a deceptive waterlogged and hazardous landscape of stunted trees and hidden water that can collapse beneath significant weight. He says it's dangerous. One time me and Steve and him were hiking through some musk egg and I went in up to my hips and they just laughed and kept walking. Brody went up to his hips and northern Ontario. There's a legend that in the 1870s musk egg swallowed a train and a thousand feet of track when a track was accidentally laid on the musk egg. Did that happen? It's a legend. It's all I've done about it. If I may please was it covered in the Alaska book? Yeah, in the Alaska book coming out October 20th. Okay. We have a story about a guy I found this newspaper article. Guy went missing maybe a year or two years later they found part of his head and two beaver skulls with broken teeth and as best they could determine he had fallen in the musk egg with a heavy load on his back and drowned or died of exposure and then a bear ate him and the beaver skulls the broken teeth were because they've gotten caught in his traps. And so that they basically figured he had two beavers on his back walking through the musk egg fell died and then a bear basically got rid of all the evidence. Wow. Another one of the there's a lot of really weird haunted and haunting stories in that period. Let me buy that book. Oh yeah, you should. October 20th. Anywhere you get your audiobooks go do it now. What a plug. We didn't plan that. All right, Phil. It's time for another scoreboard update. Tell us who is left in the game. Everybody. Wow. Left in the game. But Rodi is in first place with four points. Brody is the only one who could exceed the Jennifer index. Well, yeah, I mean, yeah, I mean the Jennifer index estimated that someone would get 10 points. That's right. Because Jennifer got five. Yeah. But we've got Randall, Mark Spencer and Matt behind Brody. They've got three points. Laura has two. Geez. Wow. I hope you guys just another yonness episode. I hope you guys are having fun. All right. Question number nine. A Chipotle pepper is a smoked blank pepper. Brody's got an answer. Randall's got an answer. Mark's also writing. Everyone's got to spend
answers for writing. I was hoping everybody would question about Chipotle. Chipotle is a smoked blank pepper. Everybody feel good about their answers? No, but you got something written down. I bet we have the same answer. Randall says Adobo Maracalapeno, Spencer Hallapeno, Laura Anaheim, Matt Adobo, Brodie Hallapeno. The correct answer is Hallapeno. Hallapeno spend most of their life green, but at the end of the season, they turn red. The leftover red Hallapenos are picked to be turned into Chipotle peppers. The red Hallapenos are smoked for several days until they lose 90% of their moisture. Chipotle's are commonly found canned in Adobo sauce. Yeah, but turning up straight dried Chipotle shouldn't be too hard. Just go to your local cornice ria for recipe using Chipotle's. You can try chef Lucas Leaf's venison burrito bowl on the meat eater website. Lucas makes venison tinga for the protein, which is flavored with cumin, oregano, tomatoes, garlic, apple cider vinegar and Chipotle peppers. Who are my local what? Cornice ria, the Mexican Grocery. Where is that embosment? Cornice has one 15 year old girl's birthday party. Randall, you knew that? All right. No, we need another correct answer root. Oh, no, no, sorry. Oh, you guys want correct answer if you are a scoreboard update. Do you still want to do one more updates since the game's so close, Brodie got that right. So he's up to five points. Randall slipped up. He jumped down to three. So behind Brodie with one question left, our mark and Spencer with four points. I'd say guys, but Brodie's going to do probably pretty good. All right, it correct answer review. Number one was blacktail deer. Number two, Kiwi. Number three, Samson or Ramican. Five wind river to Big Horn River. Six Keishler rain, seven footprint, eight Muskeg, nine jalapeno. We're on to question 10. Name six of the 12 grouse species that reside in North America. And the question is name six of the 12 grouse species that reside in North America. Technically, it's not a question to demand demanding that you name six of the 12 grouse species that reside in North America. This is the one where I had to give Jennifer some pushing, urging reminders of where we've been to remember six of them. Tiktok is definitely quiet in here. Brodie is confident he has six grouse species written down. Randall's still working. Mark is working Spencer has six. I think I got some duplicates. We'll see. All right, one last time, name six of the 12 grouse species that reside in North America. Whatever I think about asking a question like this, I'm deterred by how long it'll take me to read all of the answers as I go along the room. That makes sense because it looks like you're falling asleep. I am he's up to late playing his game. No, no. All right, Matt still give Matt Laura another 30 seconds here. They're still thinking it through us. I say the right thinking about playing the game today and my dog was sneezing a lot last night. All right, Randall, go ahead and reveal your answer and everybody else too. Oh, God. All says sage, rough blue city spruce mountain, Mark roughed sage, dusky blue city sharp tailed Spencer, blue rough dusky sharp tail, great, greater sage, lesser sage, Laura sage, sharp tail, dusky rough, Tamarigan woodcock, Matt sage sharp tail, roughy mountain, fun desert, Brody roughed sharp tail, sage spruce, dusky and city Brody got it. The correct answers could be greater sage, grouse, Gunnison sage, grouse, sharp tail grouse, greater prairie chicken, lesser prairie chicken, spruce grouse, rough grouse, rough grouse, city grouse, dusky grouse and those two are the ones that used to be blue. Willow, Tamarigan, rock, Tamarigan and finally white tailed Tamarigan meter shoes have brought me in contact with all of the grouse besides Gunnison, greater and lesser prairie chickens and willow, Tamarigan. All of them have been good eating, but I prefer the dusky grouse. It has the lightest colored meat. I found this on the internet, although Leopold wrote in the San Calney, Almanac in a sand county Almanac. The grouse represents only a million of either the mass or the energy of an acre, yet subtract the grouse and the whole thing is dead. He loved the grouse. In February, the Trump administration removed ESA protections for the lesser prairie chicken. This bird is presently working with less than 10% of its historical habitat without protections. It's future is grim. If you'd like to support efforts to save this grouse, look into the North American Grouse Partnership or dozens forever, the Nature Conservancy, the Audubon Society, all of which currently have active grouse programs. They are they looking to do the same with sage grouse mar? They've been talking about all sorts of things like that. Bad news from that administration. All right. Yeah. I guess that makes Brody the winner, Phil. It does indeed. He's got it. Awesome. Well, thank you. Brody, get six, one better, one and a half there than Jennifer. Brody, where would you like to donate your $500? Well, you just mentioned some organizations. Let's do one of them. Okay. Okay. Okay. Can Grouse Partnership? Is that it? Yes. It was North American Grouse Partnership. North American Grouse Partnership. Yeah. How did they give them to them before? We have. Hey. Very good. New place for $500. Good job, Yani. It was fun. Hey, thank you. Yeah. Listening, watching, listening. Join us next week for more meat-eater trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. Well done, Yani. Thanks, Yani. Yani. Sorry to make it. Yeah. Spencer himself. Dakota, he's the host. Using those smooth mellowed tones, he lays them questions down. And he likes taking those two and three-year-old bucks and he's an avid amateur rock-hound. If you got deer in your camp, I want to hear about it because that sounds like a sweet camp. But still, we made two shoes with, hey, dude, in first light specter camel anyway. Not because you need it, just because it's cool. The wally funk and the wally slip camp. Because it's the pattern we love and we wanted something comfortable and ultra lightweight for when we're done hunting, okay?
