Ep. 938: Game On, Suckers! MeatEater Trivia CCXXXVI

Mediter Trivia, a game show celebrating outdoor traditions, features a 10-round quiz on hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. The show addresses real-world concerns, such as solo hunting loneliness, offering practical solutions like reading, playing card games, and visiting local towns. A key educational point is the reclassification of bass records by the IGFA, which corrected spotted bass records due to scientific findings. Trivia questions cover a range of topics—from turkey populations in states like Virginia to the origin of the Cannonball Run and the identity of a man who stole elk antlers from Hemingway’s home. The season highlights “Whitetail Week,” featuring a high-value guided hunt with Mark Kangin and Jordan Bud in Nebraska, along with free gear and conservation donations. The show promotes responsible stewardship of nature, with all prize money supporting conservation efforts. Host Spencer Newarth and guests engage in lively, informative discussions that blend humor, facts, and real-life outdoor experiences, making the show both entertaining and environmentally conscious.

Welcome to Mediter Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. There is a prize. Mediter will donate $500 to the Conservation Organization of the Winners Choosing. I'm your host Spencer NewArth and today we're joined by Janice Brody, Randall, Brianna, Laura and Dane. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from Mediter's Four Verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. Mediter Trivia is brought to you by one of my favorite beers, Bushlight, Bushlight Head for the Mountains. All right, we're starting today with a mailbag question. If you have a question, you want the trivia crew to answer, then send your question with the subject line mailbag to triviathmediter.com. All right, this is a long one. I wasn't raised in a sportsman's family, but over the last two years, I've picked up archery elk hunting and have really come to love it. The one thing I haven't found, however, is anyone to enjoy it with. It seems like so much of hunting is meant to be shared. The successes and failures, the stories around the campfire, and even the whole lot of nothing that happens on an elk hunt. I can handle and even appreciate a couple of days and nights away from my wife, kids, and folks in general, but as a pretty social person, I often find myself wishing I had someone there to hunt with and talk to you. So I'm looking for some advice on how to deal with the loneliness of solo hunting for extended periods. Yani, just got home from home. How many days? So he's not looking for a way to find a hunting partner. He's just looking for a way to battle the lonely days. It sounds like Levi is hoping a hunting partner comes around some day. I'm guessing that's the ideal scenario, but for now, he's accepted he's just going to be by himself out there. They're the lonely boring patches. Yeah. He just got home from like 20-day elk hunt, right? You and one cameraman, right? Yeah, it wasn't solo. But if you were still though, how would you kill that time on 20 days? What advice? Certainly reading material, I think, is a great way to go. Small paperbacks. So they were made for. Yeah. Or just these days downloaded to your phone. I actually even with having a camera guy with me the whole time. I read a couple volumes of John Eberhart's new DIY Whitetail books. Okay. You were looking for elk. A couple volume Whitetails. Wow. Yeah. It's a three volume set. Wow. When they just came out. Three or two thirds of it. Yeah. That's nice. Yeah. Large print shortbooks. It's not too hard to do. What else would I do to kill it? Probably find a spot with some cell service, call home every now and then, you know? He's just telling you to be on your phone more out there. Yeah. Well, and that. Stay busy. Okay. You know, take naps. Stay busy by taking naps. Well, you do both. There you go. What other advice do we have for Levi? Man, go into town once in a while. There you go. Get a burger. Whatever. Talk to some weirdos. There's no, like, I don't know, like, if he's hunt like a week at a time alone or whatever, like, I mean, unless you're more than, I don't know, three, four hours away from home. You can hunt for a couple days and go home and go back, you know, archery seasons long. Not with these gas prices. Yeah. True. Most places here within, like, 30 minutes of a bar that serves bushlight and burgers and you go in there and you meet some locals, you meet some other hunters, maybe you'll meet a landowner, the right landowner. It's, I like roads it by, go into town, have a bushlight and a burger. What else we got for Levi, Randall? Just bring a big book. Just bring a big book that you wouldn't read under any other circumstances. Mm-hmm. I like the only thing you have. Like, uh, mind games are, like, puzzles, like a single puzzle, just go to whatever passes the time. One thing I find myself doing is revisiting all of the choices I've made in my life. And that can make a hunt longer, yeah. Just evaluating what the decisions I made and how they've led to where I am now. If all the elk are hanging out on private, just walk down there across that ranch and talk to the rancher. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Go to the medider.com/games. We have games three days a week. You can play crosswords, word search, uh, medider, wordle. That could keep you busy. Deckard Cards. Deckard Cards. Deckard Cards. Deckard Cards. Deckard Cards. I play cribbage with friends when there's more than one of us. One, but-- Solitaire exists for a reason. There's one, one man card games. All right. Good luck, Levi. Play games. Be on your phone more. Take naps. Read a book. It's our advice. All right. Now we want to talk about Whitetail Week. It's Whitetail Week here at Mediter-Yani-Tel folks with that means. Whitetail Week. Get all things Whitetail going on right now, um, at the websites and, uh, all the content that we're putting out this week is all Whitetail related. It's literally coming out of our ears, uh, to go into your ears, maybe your eyes, um, but one of the highlights of Whitetail Week is that we have the ultimate Whitetail giveaway the highlight. Yeah. Which is, um, just a crazy prize package, uh, with the main chunk of it being a guided hunt, uh, with Mark Kangin and Jordan Bud on Jordan, Jordan Bud's place in Nebraska. So, uh, if you want more details about that, go to, uh, the meat eater store and, uh, you can check out all the Whitetail gear we got. And like I said, all the content that we got coming out this week to get you all fired up for Whitetail hunt. What do I need to do to win that, um, you just have to enter. You're gonna have to give us your name and your email, I think, Randall, but they're not gonna let you win. Uh, yeah, you can just go enter or for every $25 you spend, uh, you get 20 additional entries, uh, instead of 10 for this week, the giveaway goes now through October 12, uh, $23,000 in prizes. Wow. Uh, with the big one being that guy to hunt at Jordan Bud's place, uh, Whitetail Week happening right now. Alright, we had now have some housekeeping on a previous episode. I had a question about which of these world record bass is biggest between mean mouth bass, rock bass, white bass, and spotted bass. The correct answer was mean mouth bass with the world record weight of eight and a half pounds. And in the flavor text, I said how the spotted bass world record is two and a half pounds. Well, a whole bunch of listeners wrote in telling me I was wrong. And multiple said that they themselves have caught spotted bass bigger than that. Here's what those listeners are missing two years ago. The International Game Fish Association, the definitive record keeper of world record fish, made an announcement that spotted bass records are changing due to new science. Here is part of that press release quote, the IGFA is pleased to announce significant updates to bass record categories based on the latest scientific findings. These changes rooted in comprehensive research and conservation efforts underscore the IGFA's commitment to maintaining accurate and current records for game fish species, ensuring a thriving future for the sport. The research highlighted several key findings, particularly concerning the spotted bass and its close relative, the Alabama bass. The study confirmed that many records previously attributed to spotted bass were in fact, Alabama bass. Consequently, the IGFA has corrected these records to reflect accurate species identification. End of quote. So with these revised records, the spotted bass world record is a two and a half pound fish that was caught in Texas. And the Alabama bass world record is an 11 pound fish that was caught in California. That 11 pounder used to be the world record spotted bass until 2024 research showed that it wasn't actually a spotted bass at all. And all that means that the eight and a half pound world record meat mouth is bigger than the other records mentioned in the question. Wow. So there we go. Yeah. It was the most feedback I've ever gotten on a single question is probably the meanest feedback. Yeah. I'm not going to be mean to these listeners. I'm not going to call them dumb. I'm not going to call them idiot. I'm not going to call them ignorant. I will. They were calling me. But there you go. Yeah, that was really controversial. A lot of feedback. People were even mean to set and just because Seth didn't question me hard enough, they were like, how did Seth monsters not just punch him in the face when he gave that inaccurate information? There was some explanation for it, but I also figured everybody else, there were enough people angry that there was more to it than that. So close the book. Boy. This is fascinating. All right. The shall be next for today is a four. So our winners should get eight correct answers. And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil. Look, I need to know what I stand to win. Everything. Poor Seth. How's that? How does it stand to win everything? Question on the topic is hunting. And this will be a multiple choice. Which of these states has the highest wild turkey population? Is it Virginia, Oklahoma, Idaho, or Maine? Of those states, which has the most wild turkeys, Virginia, Oklahoma, Idaho, Maine? No quick answers on this one. Which of these states has the highest wild turkey population, Virginia, Oklahoma, Idaho, Maine? Brianna, Brody, Randall, Laura all locked in their answers, Yani's still thinking. Virginia, Oklahoma, Idaho, or Maine, is everybody ready? Yes sir. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Brianna says Maine, Laura, Virginia, Randall, Virginia, Dana, Idaho, Yani, Virginia, Brody, Virginia, the correct answer, is Virginia, the room did well. It's estimated that there are 180,000 turkeys in Virginia, 140,000 in Oklahoma, 70,000 in Maine, and 50,000 in Idaho, the counties with the highest density of turkeys in Virginia are mostly located along the Chesapeake Bay in the eastern part of the state. There's a map showing turkey density for Virginia, seems like every turkey in that state is drinking out of the James River or the Potomac River or the Chesapeake Bay. All right, we're on to question two. The topic is fishing. This next great question is via Cory Benton Court. Michael has Fredo executed while fishing on Lake Tahoe in this 1974 Oscar winning sequel. Randall and Brody got it. There are other four players don't know it. Michael has. It's one of the most famous scenes in Hollywood history. Oh, okay. In history. In history. In history. Like, I'm not live. Yeah, he's not wrong. You want the sequel. You should tell me the sequel. Yeah, Michael has Fredo executed while fishing on Lake Tahoe in this 1974 Oscar winning sequel. Brody and Randall very quick to answer Brody gave a heavy hand to now Yanis come up with his answer. Did Brody's feedback help you there? No. Okay. No. Yeah, Brianna calling everybody else old or a real cinema. It would be sad if you guys haven't seen it. That's for sure. Like Phil would be really mad at you. Oh, wow. I think there is that true. Oh, I don't have this point. Yeah. Phil looks furious over there. I can't see it. There's steam. I'm just torn on which which one? Phil has Fredo executed while fishing on Lake Tahoe in this 1974 Oscar winning sequel. Not really. Not really. Okay. Just Josh. Oh, I can think about right now is Dune. Yeah. Dune three. I haven't seen Dune one or two yet. Oh, you read the books though. I just read the books. Big book boy. Oh, all I can think about is sequels right now. There's so many Dune books. Phil, if you read the books and seen the movies. Only seen the movies. I started Dune in high school and it was just too esoteric and fun for me at the time. I think if I gave it a shot now, I'd enjoy it. I think it's right in your Q zone. It's pretty narrow Q zone, but it's deep. Do our other three players give up? My wife always gives me a hard time that I fall asleep during movies and this is about the only time it hurts me. You think this movie's been on your house before? He wouldn't know. Yeah, I wouldn't know. I've watched the first 15 minutes of it, maybe. Go ahead and reveal your answers, Rihanna and Loro without an answer, Randall, Godfather, two, Dane without an answer, Yani and Brody, the Godfather, two they got it. The correct answer is the Godfather, part two. Prior to Fredo's execution, Fredo tells his nephew that he wants to show him his secret fishing trick that he learned as a boy in Brooklyn. Fredo says that if you recite a Hail Mary every time you cast your line, you're sure to catch a fish. But Fredo's nephew is pulled from the boat by his dad, Michael, before leaving the dock. This is so that Fredo can be alone with Al, has soon to be assassin. And on the water while Fredo is fishing and praying, Al kills him. Question three, the topic is wildlife. The blank salamander, which is named after its stripes, is the state amphibian of Colorado, Illinois, Kansas and Wyoming. Brody quick to answer again, the blank salamander, which is named after its stripes, is the state amphibian of Colorado, Illinois, Kansas and Wyoming. We had one of these prowl across our porch one night when I was back in Colorado. Real treat, every time I get to see one of these things, it's really tickled. It's always surprising, because when you see, I mean, like any salamander, usually like, what are you doing here? This is Colorado, the arid west, the blank salamander, which is named after its stripes, is the state amphibian of Colorado, Illinois, Kansas and Wyoming. Randall doesn't seem to know the salamanders down here. No, I don't. Wait, do you have this one right? I think I went with one type of stripes, and I think it's wrong. Okay. But doubt it myself. Laura, do you have this one right? No. No, I don't. Dane, do you know your salamanders? I don't know if it's right, but I'm thinking of animals that also have stripes. It makes sense. Okay. Randall is trying to get inside of my head. Yeah. Is it working? Are you in there, Randall? I'm going to reverse inception of you. Randall's telling me that you boys had hot dogs for lunch. Who we did? And they were, Randall said they were too big. Well, they're too big to eat too for lunch. Oh. Okay. So one. I only had one. I'm feeling pretty good. I didn't need that. I had two. I'm not feeling very good. You got an edge up on them that. Yeah. Oh my gosh. I don't know what really prompted it. Is that it? No, I do know. It's Randall. It's like I was never really a hot dog eater, but it's kind of hanging out with Randall. I've become more of a hot dog eater and like this that 20-day hunt I was just on. I bet you the crew and I, we probably ate close to a hundred hot dogs and, and Randall wasn't even there. No, no. That's just a symptom of hanging out with him. Yeah. It is a great camp meal. I mean, it's just. Fair hunting in the spring. I'll just put my grill on my tailgate, and you just grill as many hot dogs as you want. Yeah. They're practically free. Have you ever done one? I've never done one in a jet boil. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Like putting them in a thermos. Yeah. Keeping hot. Do you drink the dog water after? No. No. No. Randall, do you like yourself? Isn't that a lint biscuit album? Don't they have something about the heart? Yeah. We should probably stop talking about it. Okay. Does everybody want me to put an explicit tag on it? Sure. Oh, damn. Rihanna says the zebra salamander, Laura says tiger, Randall, zebra, dainne, tiger. I didn't even think of tiger. Brody, tiger. The correct answer is the tiger salamander. Can I chalk that one up to the dogs? Tiger salamanders are found across the country besides New England. The Eastern tiger salamander is the largest land dwelling salamander on the continent. Growing up to 13 inches long, they spend most of their life underground, only appearing topside after heavy rains or during their breeding migrations. There is a tiger salamander. That's true. That's true. That's true. That's true. I mean, he looks more like a leopard. Some of them have more blotches. Some of them are just solid colors. I see. Some have stripes. Just like a tiger. Let's see it on the tail. This one's more spotted than striped, I'd say. Question for the topic is woodsmanship. This nine letter word refers to quote a long stretch of un-maintained dirt road that is corrugated by closely spaced ripples. That is a definition I got from the University of New Mexico. This nine letter word refers to a long stretch of un-maintained dirt road that is corrugated by closely spaced ripples. And this is question four. That's a lot of letters. Brianna seems to have it. And I'll add these roads. OK. Brody's got an answer. Randall and Dane have answers. Yani's still playing hangman. Did you come up with it, Yani? I believe so. They got it the correct answer is washboard The name comes from the road resembling an old-fashioned washboard the rippling is the result of dry weather and the continuous friction created by tires When a vehicle hits a small bump or dip the tire briefly bounces in the air then when it lands it displaces loose dirt to form another bump or dip This process becomes a repeating cycle that ultimately forms the washboard conditions Question five the topic is conservation. That's all I could think. That's the only point of reference. You've been to Biloxi. No, no, I just know that you gamble there a lot of gambling there.
