Welcome to Mediter Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. There is a prize. Mediter will donate $500 to the Conservation Organization of the Winners Choosing. I'm your host Spencer Newarth and today we're joined by Seth, Logan, Sarah, Alyssa, John and Jen Pearson. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from Mediter's Four Verticals which are hunting, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. Mediter Trivia is brought to you by one of my favorite beers, Bush Light, Bush Light Head for the Mountains. All right, Jen, first time on the show tell folks what you do here at Mediter. I am the event and marketing operations coordinator. Yeah, anytime you go to a really cool Mediter event and everything seems like it's running smooth and nothing is on fire, that's thanks to Jen. That's the hope. Just feel like that, that you're just trying not to have things on fire for these events. Yes, and a lot of cat-herding. Yeah, a lot of cat-herding with our crew. Jen, what are you going to be your strengths and weaknesses at Mediter Trivia, hunting, fishing, conservation, cooking? I feel like most of the weaknesses. Okay. No strengths then. I don't know. We'll see. Maybe we'll surprise it. But there's a reason why it says my first time. All right. We'll find out what Jen does. Okay. We're starting today's show with a question for the crew. If you have a question you want the crew to answer, then send your question with a subject line mail bag to
[email protected]. This is a good one. It's from Clayton. He says, "I love sardines. The girls I work with, however, hate sardines. Specifically, they hate the smell when I eat them and apparently hate the smell that is left over when I put the empty can in our shared kitchen trash. I've tried to be reasonable. I started rinsing the can out thoroughly before throwing it away, but apparently that isn't good enough. They could still smell it and would let me know they were displeased." So lately I've been gathering up all of my sardine evidence, can, packaging, napkins, whatever, and carrying it outside to the dumpster. This feels like a lot of effort, especially considering I am the executive director. At some point, should the executive director be allowed to throw a sardine can in the office trash? Am I bending over backwards for my coworkers? Should I go back to throwing my thoroughly rinsed sardine cans in the shared kitchen trash or have I created a precedent that I now have to live with or are thoughts for Clayton? I hate the smell of sardines, but that is excessive. I feel like those people need to learn how to live with some discomfort in the workplace and like that's a little extreme. I love tinfish of all forms. I do think that when you're entering into an office environment, you're subscribing to a different social contract than the one that is at your house, microwaving fish, smelly stuff in the trash can, rinsing them out, have some community-minded behavior in your workplace, I think. But how fragile are you that you can't have some sort of minor discomfort for some bad smells? Well, would you stick a salmon flan to the microwave upstairs? No, but that's intentionally, I don't know, it's him consuming sardines and then putting the trash in the garbage. I don't know. That just seems excessive that he needs to rinse it and, you know, back. I love the office set up, like these people add doors to their offices and they just shut the door. I don't know. That's what I was wondering. Yeah. Like does he have his own office? This is something that would work. Exactly. Exactly. You'd think so. Windows. Yeah. HR, what do we think about this problem? Oh, wow. I think that some people have sensory issues, so their smells are much more heightened than other smells. I'm not sure if that's the case here, but I always feel like you should just be a good human. And if it is a fending, if you other people, is that that big of a deal to walk outside and throw it away or just don't bring it. There's people who have allergies. You can't bring peanut butter. There's all sorts of different things. It's just that big of an inconvenience. One of the questions that Clayton asks, he says, am I bending over backwards for my coworkers? Yes, but that's also okay. Like, I assume you like these people you work with. You said you're the executive director. You want to be like a good executive director, right? So it's probably annoying to like hike that outside and throw it away, but I bet your coworkers will appreciate you more. It's probably worth like the minor inconvenience to just not have sardine stink in the office. Any other thoughts for Clayton? John, what kind of gross stuff do the store boys eat? Oh, everything. Sardine. So, I don't know if we ever had canned fish, but we also have a little basement. So we kind of like, escape the sales floor. So it's kind of easy to ventilate a little bit, but I mean, we smell everything. We smell like hunters that just came in that just shot an elk and you, yep, yes, I did a shot of bull last week. Congratulations. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. But oh, we've actually, we have a whole kitchen set up. So, I mean, we've cooked vines and we cooked elk. We've cooked salmon like all of us, all of us guys, we don't really like, we don't say anything. We just, yeah, we just shut the door to our downstairs kitchen where we have our lunch and cook. We have had some customers kind of say, like, oh, it smells funky in here. We're like, oh, yeah, something, something's out in the street. Yeah. Yeah. And any boy strike me as someone to be complaining about smells in the kitchen. No. No. No. Good luck with that one Clayton. That's, that's tough. It's too bad you like the sardine so much. All right. Here is your chance to be on Mediter Trivia, the listeners. Backcountry Hunters and Anglers is auctioning off a seat in the room for a game of trivia. The winning bidder will get to choose a date in 2027 to compete against Yani and Brody and Randall and the rest of the Mediter Crew travel lodging and meals are not included. All proceeds go to BHA to place your bid. Go to backcountryhunterz.org and check out their forged and found online auction the bidding end September 30th. And while you're there, check out their other auction blocks, such as a turnpike, Trivador's concert package, a hunting and fishing trip with Cal, a guided hunting Hawaii, a lifetime on ex elite membership, custom tax journey, and much more. Again, that's the forged and found online auction at backcountryhunterz.org. All right. Shelby and X for today is a three, so our winner should get six correct answers, and with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil. Look, I need to know what I stand to win, everything, how's that, there's time to win everything. Question one, the topic is public lands, and this will be multiple choice. Which of these places is not managed by the National Park Service? Is it Gettysburg National Military Park, Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, Dinosaur National Monument, or Pawnee National Grassland? So three of those places are managed by the National Park Service. One of them is not, which one is it? Gettysburg National Military Park, Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, Dinosaur National Monument, or Pawnee National Grassland? Which one is not managed by the National Park Service? Everyone in the room is just going to be making a guess. No confident, no quick answers for question one. Which of these places is not managed by the Park Service? Gettysburg National Military Park, Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, Dinosaur National Monument, Pawnee National Grassland? This is a tough first question. Gettysburg Public Lands, Seth's still writing, Seth, are you ready? Yeah, I changed my answer last minute. Go ahead and reveal your answer. Seth says Pawnee National Grassland, Logan and Sarah say Edgar Allan Poe. John says Dinosaur, Jen, Dinosaur, Alyssa, Gettysburg, the correct answer is Pawnee National Grassland, just Seth. National Military Parks and National Historic Sites are managed by the National Park Service. National Monuments are managed by a number of agencies but mostly belong to the National Park Service and National Grasslands are managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
"Question to the Topic is Kicking. This next great question is via Leeland Heart. This seven letter word is defined as, quote, "A cut of meat taken from the breast or lower chest area of a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum." This seven letter word is defined as, "A cut of meat taken from the breast or lower chest area of a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum." John and Logan and Seth all have their answers. Come on, Jen, you got it. John tells about Killeneble, had a sweet video of it happening. How'd you film that? You just sat your phone up behind you? No, I actually bought a 360 GoPro and I actually bought it like three weeks ago. I'm like, "Yeah, this will be a cool thing to kind of try out." There's a little remote that I attached to my wrist, so just press a button and it starts filming. Obviously, 360 covers all angles. I went out, it was an extremely rainy morning that morning, and the mud going in was absolutely legendary. I almost got stuck three different times, but got up onto a ridge line, didn't hear any bugles, so I just kind of like started covering drainage and got to a glassing knob, glass down into a drainage and saw him way at the bottom, like 500 yards away, raking just a small little pine tree. I moved in and got to about 150, 200 yards from him throughout a couple of cow coals, and he just came right to me. From the time I called to when I was drawn back, it was probably 15 seconds, and he came right in. That's cool. Great video. What's your Instagram handle that people can watch it? My Instagram is just my full name, John, J-O-N, Montrecer, M-O-N-T-R-E-S-O-R, all lower case, and no space. In the way it played out, it looked like just a white tailhunter waiting for a white tail to walk by. That's pretty much what it was, honestly. Yeah. The wind was perfect direction. If I did let him go just a little bit more, he probably would have caught a whiff of me, but my first saw him is at 40 yards, and he closed that into 25, and I was shooting downhill. My arrow did hit a bit high, and I knew I got one lung in some artery for sure, so he was going to die. I backed out, got to my glassing knob, and then glassed him up dead in his bed at 100 yards from where I shot him. Well done. Head into the meteor storm. Yeah. Give John a high five. All right. Again, one question to you. The seven letter word is defined as a cut of meat taken from the breast or lower chest area of a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum. Is everybody ready? Seth says brisket, Logan brisket, Sarah brisket, John brisket, Jen without an answer, Alyssa without an answer. The correct answer is brisket. To learn how to cook a deer brisket, go check out Daniel Pruitt's article on the meateater.com called balsamic braised venison. It is a perfect five-star rating, Ben 304 noted it has the texture and taste of very good roast beef. Amos Dean 53 said it is his new favorite roast recipe and sea trimble compared it to eating at a fine dining restaurant. I think Daniel's balsamic braised venison recipe. So good. She specifically uses brisket on that. Is there another one with like all the red onions and balsamic vinegar? Hmm. Have you seen the recipe? I probably have. I don't remember which one that is. Yeah. So good. I'm pretty sure I know the one they're talking about. I use that with bear. Hmm. Phenomenal. The three. The topic is hunting. This next great question is via Daniel Steeman. Amos Slade sings quote, "I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man. And I'd rather have a dog than a dollar in this 1981 animated Disney movie." Jen's got this one. Amos Slade sings, "I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man. And I'd rather have a dog than a dollar in this 1981 animated Disney movie." Alyssa, do you have this one? I believe so. Sarah, do you have this one? I have a good guess. Okay. John, Seth, and Logan, not so sure, though. Should've watched more. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Should've had kids earlier. Amos Slade. I don't know. I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man. And I'd rather have a dog than a dollar in this 1981 animated Disney movie. And we might have a little performance from Phil the engineer after this one. Seth, do you have a good answer? No, I don't know. I just threw one down that might make sense. John, you have an answer? I do. Logan, you good? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Fox and the Hound. Logan, 101 Dalmatians. Sarah, Fox and the Hound, John, Bambee, Jen, Fox and Hound, Alyssa, the Fox and the Hound. The correct answer is the Fox and the Hound, Weldon Room. Amos is the grumpy gun-toting neighbor and antagonist of the Fox and the Hound. He becomes the big bad of the movie when he vows to kill a fox that he spots near his henhouse. As Amos says in his song, he makes his living as a hunter and trapper. His only singing happens during the four-verse tune called A Hunt Man. Here is Phil Taylor performing it. Take it away Phil. I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man. And I'd rather have a dog than a dollar. So let's go banjo ring a ding-a-ding-hoo. Give a little hoot in a hoar. Wow. Well done Phil. Thank you. I never do a remake. Oh, beautiful. Fifty years later. It was the first movie that ever made me cry. Wow. That's a sad one. That's a sad one. I don't know. I don't recall anything about it. What part was so touching? I don't remember. I haven't watched it since I was nine years old and I cried. Wow. I didn't even know that when I asked you to sing a Mrs. Song, Weldon Phil. And for the topic is gear, Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986. That's it. That's it. That's a whole question. I was hoping for some more clues in there. That's all you get. Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986. Seth Quick to answer John Quick to answer. Our other four players. Couple PA boys. Mm-hmm. Oh yeah. We need this one. For sure. Mm-hmm. I have used this brand for a good majority of my life. Okay. Everyone had a sticker on their truck in high school. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. He's going. He's a bigger, smaller than a loaf of bread. How would that help you? Just John, John and I went to high schools that played each other in sports. Yep. Okay. Yeah. Who was the better team? Bald Eagle. Yeah. His. His for sure. Seth's high school was the big brother. John's was the little brother. Pretty much. Pretty much. I'll come. Absolutely. We're on question four. No. We're using all the context that John and Seth. Yeah. You know, do you ever repeat answers, but change the question? Mm-hmm. I'm not going to give you any hints here. Answer that after though, because I'm curious if you can just change the clue. Is everybody ready? Yes. Melissa, do you have an answer? I have two, but I'm going to go with the one I didn't cross out. Seth says, real tree Logan, LL being Sarah without an answer. John, a real tree, Jen without an answer. Melissa, Masio. Close. The correct answer is real tree. Real tree started as one camel pattern that Bill Jordan made to mimic the bark of real trees. He then created the real tree outdoors TV show in the early 90s, which is credited for establishing the modern format of hunting television. It first aired on TNN, the national network, and then got a spot on ESPN in the early 2000s. Not to answer your question, Logan. Real tree would be hard not to talk about them more than once in like five years, so real tree has been an answer before it's been talked about in the show before as has LL being. So what will happen? I run to question five. The topic is wildlife. This is our listener question of the week, which was won by David Beck for sending this great question. David is going to get a $150 first light gift card. If you want a chance to win the listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia at the meat eater dot com. If I had FU money, I'd have multiple of those smoky bear size at my place. Did everybody forget about the blue? Yeah. Okay. Low-moderate, high, very high extreme. Dang it, Seth. Yeah, that's the $1,000 donation. We're on to Question 8, the topic is Public Lands. What does OHV stand for as in an OHV trail? The room is stumped. Seth has now come up with an answer and he's the only one. What does OHV stand for? This is Question 8. So we'll get a scoreboard update from Phil after this. Could be back to bag 0% or Seth, how do you feel about your answer? Not great. OHV. Well, while we're trying to answer this trivia question, what is PA system stand for? No idea. Well, I just recently learned this. Public announcement? Good dress. At least that's what the internet told me. I don't know. I don't believe you. Why were you Googling that? Just like one of those things that you think about, but you never actually like know what the acronym stands for? Like this, I've seen that so many places, but I've never actually had to like think about what it meant. Someone told me the other day that Wi-Fi doesn't stand for anything either. It's just Wi-Fi. Oh really? I haven't checked in on that. Now we're trying to solve OHV as in an OHV trail. The room. The room is stumped. Does everybody give up OHV Seth now going in for a change? Is everybody ready? John, doing some last second scribbling. Seth says, on highway vehicle, Logan, only high vehicles, Sarah, off road, Humvee vehicle, John, off road, hauling vehicle, Jen without an answer, Alyssa without an answer. The correct answer is off highway vehicle. Nobody got it. Seth was two letters off of being right. He had on highway vehicle, but it's off highway vehicle, just the opposite. And OHV is any motorized land vehicle that's predominantly used for recreational purposes on unimproved trails. Examples are ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and Dunebuggies. Utah has the most OHV trails with more than 80,000 miles worth. All right. We're on to question nine, but we're going to get a scoreboard update from Phil first. Great. Pretty similar spread from the last check in. Seth's now got six points. Sarah and John are tied behind him with three, Logan and Jen with two, and Alyssa with one. That means Seth is already wrapped up the victory. See how high. Freshers off. Yes, score. We're on question nine. The topic is Woodsmanship. The CDC says that one of the most common symptoms of a tick bite is a circular rash that looks like this eight letter word. Sarah's got this one. John and Seth, they like their answers to the CDC says that one of the most common symptoms of a tick bite is a circular rash that looks like this eight letter word. Jen, do you have this one right feeling kind of confident? Does anybody had a circular rash before that looks like this thing? Okay. Now that you PA boys, you somehow got out of the state without getting a tick bite. Oh, I've had plenty of those. Yeah, I've had them on me. Just not the wrong tick bite. Right. Honestly, back in the day, I would never even look for something like that. I'd just pull ticks out of myself left and right, and just think it was just another Tuesday, you know? Is it all tick bites or just certain types of ticks? I don't have the answer to that. I haven't linked to a very specific kind of tick. Like a dear tick? Yeah. Well, I don't want to leave. I feel like some spider bites can throw a similar look as this, but I think a lot of people just associate that with ticks. I've heard them like specifically connected to ticks. I know, I feel like I don't know if now I'm correct. Everybody ready? Logan set, excuse me, set says bullseye, Logan without an answer. Sarah, bullseye, John Ringworm, Jen Ringworm, Alyssa Ringworm, the correct answer is bullseye. A bullseye-like rash occurs on 70% of people who get Lyme disease. The rash typically shows up between 3 and 30 days after a bite occurs. And while it can be one to the touch, it's rarely itchy or painful. The unique circular pattern is a result of your body's inflammatory reaction to the moving bacteria. This represents the active battlefront where your immune system is fighting off Lyme disease. All right, Phil. Let's get one more scoreboard update before question 10. Like we discussed, Seth's got it locked up now. Sarah's got four points. Seth could just double the correct answers of second place. We'll see how he does. Here's a correct answer review. One was Pawnee National Grassland, two, brisket, three, the fox and the hound, four real tree, five, chickadee, six deadliest catch, seven was five colors, eight off highway vehicle, nine bullseye. Here's question 10. This rhyming term refers to the spot on an elx rack where the final time branches away from the tip of the main beam. Yeah, this is got it, John's got it, Seth's got it. John does, does yours rhyme? Yes. Okay. Seth, does yours rhyme? Yeah. Alissa, does yours rhyme? No. No. Just that. Kind of. He say with an accent. Yeah. Yeah, he can be like this rhyming term refers to the spot on an elx rack where the final time branches away from the tip of the main beam. Logan, big elk hunter over there. Do you have this one right? No, but I don't think about like rack scoring or sizes much. I've yet to kill a bullock, so maybe once I do, I'll be able to answer this question. Now you can know. No. Big B tag guy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Pretty stoked that B tag is everybody ready. Seth says whale tail Logan brow Sarah without an answer. John whale tail, Jen without an answer, Alissa without an answer. The correct answer is whale tail. The name refers to the wise shape. These points create that resemble the fluked end of a whale's tail. A tail size is a good indicator of bull maturity. Buna Crockett says that's an elx fourth point or Buna Crockett says that an elx fourth point, which would come below the whale tail on a six by six is almost always the longest time. This time is referred to as the dagger sword or royal time. We're looking at a picture here of what would be an elx whale tail. That's the bullet John shot. Oh, I wish. Oh, good lord. All right. Seth is today's big winner. He got eight correct answers, and I did think he doubled up a second place. Well done. Seth, what are you going to do with that $500 donation? So there's a Bass Master Elite series angler Carl Joggipsen. He's been on the podcast before. He started a nonprofit called Fear My Heart. And they organize these giant river and stream and lake cleanups where they get a bunch of people together. And it's actually like worldwide though, like he does these days where it's like, you know, he organizes a big cleanup spreads the word and like a lot of people in the U.S. get involved other kinds of things.
And they go and clean up their local water body. So good place to send that $5 And that'll be a new organization always like that one more time What's it called Seth fear my heart? Fear my heart $500 going away. All right join us next week for more meat eater trivia the only game show where conservation always wins. Yeah, Spencer himself Dakota. He's the host using those smooth mellow tones. He lays them questions down. And he likes taking those two and three year old bucks. And it's an avid amateur rock.
