Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia,
the only game show where conservation always wins.
There is a prize.
Meat Eater will donate $500
to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing.
I'm your host, Spencer Newarth,
and today we're joined by Brody, Randall, Seth, Reva, Alyssa, and Dane.
This is a 10-round quiz show
with questions from Meat Eater's four friends,
which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking.
Meat Eater Trivia is brought to you by one of my favorite beers,
Bush Light.
Bush Light, head for the mountains.
All right, we're starting today's episode of the Mailbag Question.
If you have a question you want the crew to answer,
then send your question with the subject line mailbag
to trivia at themeateater.com.
Before the show, our contestants today,
they deemed this to be an easy one.
So here it is.
Sam M., he says,
I recently married into a family
that is very hunting-oriented
and has land my wife has hunted for over a decade.
However, I have never killed a deer,
and this will be my first time hunting bigger game.
My question for the crew is,
if I get a chance to harvest a trophy buck
on my father-in-law's land,
should I take the shot,
or is it more respectful of his generosity
to pass and target a smaller buck or doe instead?
I think you should just talk to the father-in-law
and be like, listen,
maybe he has management goals on the property.
Maybe you just be like,
hey, what would you be comfortable with me shooting here?
That's the right answer.
What else do we have for Sam?
Yeah, I would find out the lay of the land
and the general expectations,
but if he said, you know,
shoot what you see,
I wouldn't hesitate.
My guess is the father-in-law is not going to be like,
listen here, Sam,
we got a 170-inch whitetail living out there.
You cannot,
you cannot shoot him.
I don't think that's going to happen, Sam,
but as those guys said,
you should just talk to him ahead of time.
Be like, hey, what are,
what am I okay to shoot out here?
And I bet, I bet,
since this is your first deer,
he's going to be like,
shoot whatever makes you happy, Sam.
Yeah, if you get the okay,
if you get the okay,
don't play games with yourself
and try to talk yourself out of it
thinking that your father-in-law
is going to sit you down 10 years down the road
and say, you know,
I really respected how you let that big buck pass
when you first started hunting here.
And then the neighbor shot it.
Yeah, exactly.
Yeah, I take the,
maybe this is a power trip.
Like, it's a test.
Yeah.
It's getting tested.
Okay.
But I would,
I would tell him,
if it's his first deer,
like, don't go in there
with overly high expectations.
Like, get your first deer.
Yeah.
He sounds very confident that he's,
like, that's the first thing he's going to see
and that's, like, it.
Shoot the first buck
that you would be happy with.
Yeah.
That's, that's,
maybe it's like Pike County,
Illinois or something.
Maybe he lives in the Golden Triangle
and maybe there's a 180-inch deer
behind every tree.
You're going to learn a lot, Sam,
just talking to your father-in-law.
And I bet he's a good father-in-law
and he's going to be like,
Sam, you shoot whatever makes you happy.
But also, you should know, Sam,
that there's a, you know,
175-inch, like, 6x6 out there.
That's what he's going to tell you.
And then he's going to put you
in that stand to kill that one.
If he's a terrible father-in-law
and you feel like this could be
the only opportunity to hunt this property,
I would shoot the big one.
If you're fixing to get divorced already, Sam,
shoot the whopper that lives there.
Any other advice for Sam?
Have fun.
Good luck.
You got this, Sam.
Wear your safety arms.
All right, for housekeeping today,
we have a very exciting new podcast
to tell you about.
It is called Gunfighters.
And episode one is out right now.
Reva has been working closely on this project.
Reva, tell folks about Gunfighters.
Yeah, fans of the show might be familiar
with the episode, The Gunfighters,
that Steve did when he interviewed
Brian Burrow, the author,
and then now we created
a whole podcast series around it.
So if you're familiar with that episode
or his book, The Gunfighters,
he covers a lot of stories from in there
and also stuff that's not covered in there.
Okay.
Weekly drop, I assume.
Yep.
On Tuesdays, right?
Yep.
Episode one is out right now
if you're listening to this
on the day that trivia drops.
It is?
You can find it anywhere you listen to
or watch podcasts.
Called Gunfighters.
Mm-hmm.
Here's another reason you should go listen to this.
It's going to be a great podcast.
You're going to love it.
But also, if it does really well,
then we get to do more episodes.
And that means that me and Randall and Phil
get to do more voice acting,
which I think we all came to realize
was our actual calling.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Voice acting.
Lots of Easter eggs in there.
It was the most fun day I've had in the office,
I think, this year.
I wish I could remember the character that I played.
Randall was supposed to be Wild Bill.
And then I said,
hey, Randall, I've got a Wild Bill tattoo.
Can I play?
Pretty, pretty please.
Be Wild Bill.
Yeah.
I got to be Wild Bill.
I remembered that,
and then I couldn't remember
if you actually got your way or not.
Yeah, I did.
Okay.
So, Gunfighters, episode one.
Scratch Wild Bill off the list
of possible characters I played.
Out right now.
All right, the Shelby Index for today
is a four and a half,
so our winner should get nine correct answers.
And with that, we're on to the game of trivia.
Play the drop, Phil.
Look, I need to know what I stand to win
for everything.
How's that?
You just tend to win everything.
Game on, suckers!
Question one.
The topic is fishing,
and this will be multiple choice.
Which of these world records is biggest?
Mean Mouth Bass,
Rock Bass,
White Bass,
Spotted Bass.
You've got four bass.
You've got four bass to choose from.
Which of those world records is the biggest?
A Mean Mouth Bass,
a Rock Bass,
a White Bass,
or a Spotted Bass?
Which is biggest?
Mean Mouth, Rock, White, Spotted.
A lot of guesses happening in here.
Even Seth,
who was the quickest to answer,
took him a while.
Seth, do you agree with Randall?
I do.
Okay.
Nice.
I bet that makes Randall feel nice.
That's the only person in this room
to whom I was looking for approval on that answer.
That's great.
Is everybody ready?
It's kind of torn between two.
Yeah.
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Seth says,
Mean Mouth,
Randall,
Mean Mouth,
Reva,
Mean Mouth,
Dane,
Rock Bass,
Alyssa,
Spotted Bass,
Bro,
Odie,
Mean Mouth Bass.
The correct answer is the Mean Mouth Bass.
A Mean Mouth is a hybrid between a Small Mouth and Large Mouth or Spotted Bass.
The world record was caught in Oklahoma and weighed eight and a half pounds.
The world record White Bass is seven pounds.
The world record Rock Bass is three pounds.
And the world record Spotted Bass is two and a half pounds.
It's one of the man-made fish that Spencer loves so much.
Yeah, I respect those hatchery bellas out there.
- Sorry, I wasn't listening to any of that.
It was mean mouth.
- It was mean.
- What was the world record spot?
uh only two and a half they just don't get very big man i would have thought it'd be bigger than
that tiny little things yeah question two the topic is hunting that's cool fish this next

seth says recruit retain randall recruitment retention reactivation
Viva. Rifle, rafting, and river boating. That's great. Dane says recreation, respect, rules. Alyssa, reduce, reuse, recycle. Those are great. Brody says recruit, re-engage, retain.
It's all the same thing.
The three R's are recruitment, retention, and reactivation.
Randall got that right. We're not going to give it to you, Brody. I'm sorry. You were close.
It's okay.
It's the three R's.
It means the same thing.
Retention, reactivation.
Not according to the scoreboard.
The R3 initiative has been widely adopted by outdoor organizations from state game agencies to gun ownership advocacy groups.
Recruitment is for attracting new users.
Retention is for keeping current users.
And reactivation is for re-engaging users.
It's for what now?
Re-engaging.
Re-engaging users who have drifted away.
Excuse me?
Oh, man.
Your answer is my answer, but my answer is not right.
I'm going to Google, Brody, see if I can find any R3 that says re-engage versus reactivate.
If I can, we'll give you that point.
For now, we're on to question eight.
Don't Google R3 re-engagement.
You just have to Google R3.
Okay.
And only go through two pages of results.
Don't bother.
Just the AI page.
We're on to question eight.
The topic is cooking.
This brand has been called the Kleenex and Band-Aid of slow cookers.
That's what I got, too.
It's almost slow cooking.
I made my first chili of the year this weekend.
I made some chili Colorado this weekend.
It's contagious.
Delicious.
I had it for lunch today, too.
What is that?
What makes it Colorado?
It's just like. Spices.
Colorado means red, right?
Chunks of, yeah, it's like chunks of elk in a big red sauce.
The sauce isn't big.
It's just red.
Isn't it pork?
Chunks of pork?
I think you can do it.
There's other things, but mine was with elk, yeah.
You gotta see this sauce.
It's huge.
It's huge.
It's one of the bigger sauces out there.
Brody, I'm trying to help you.
I can't find re-engage.
It's okay.
Yes.
It's just the definition of the word.
Very close, though.
Not going to give you the point.
We're at question eight.
We're going to get another scoreboard update after this.
I see five confident players, and Brody, who just came up with his answer.
Do you have this one right, Brody?
I don't know.
I'm 50-50.
Reva, are you ready?
Yep.
Dane, are you ready?
We've got the whole room saying Crock-Pot.
The whole room got it right.
It's Crock-Pot.
Instapot was a real. Despite Crock-Pot being a brand,
it's often. It's often interchangeably used with slow cooker,
similar to Kleenex and tissue or Band-Aid and bandage.
Although Crock-Pot didn't create the slow cooker,
they did popularize it after acquiring the inventor's company in 1970.
Did you mean to do that?
No, I didn't mean to do that.
I thought I had the cap on my marker.
Did you just lick a little marker?
He just went like this.
There's nothing there.
Don't worry about it.
So you had one job.
I was scorekeeping.
I've got like four jobs.
You've overlooked my physical comedy,
which is also part of my Phil's sixth job is keeping score.
We're going to get a scoreboard update right now.
Dane's got himself two points now.
Alyssa and Reva have climbed up to three.
Then in third place is Seth Morris with five.
In second place is Brody Henderson with six.
Randall Williams is in first place with seven points.
Alyssa wants to dispute.
No one's ever correctly. Successfully disputed, but you can try.
She got Crock-Pot.
She got Ohio Parent Trap.
What else?
I thought I had. Oh, I had one before the break.
Sorry, Phil.
I'm wrong.
One more for Phil.
All right, Phil's today's bill stays undefeated.
I thought it was two before the first cup.
Like a boss.
It's okay.
It happens to the best of you guys.
Like a boss, Phil.
Question nine.
The topic is fishing.
This piece of gear is defined as. A floating plastic or foam device that clips to your fishing line. to pull your bait or lure outward and away from your boat while trolling.
It's not a bobber.
Don't say it's a bobber.
This piece of gear is defined as a floating plastic or foam device
that clips to your fishing line to pull your bait or lure outward
and away from your boat while trolling.
Seth, do you own this piece of gear?
No.
Brody, you definitely own this piece of gear.
I do.
Okay.
Randall, I'm guessing it's a no.
I don't even know that I have this right.
Okay.
I feel like I'm in the neighborhood, but I can't guarantee it.
I want to sit with my uncertainty for a while, Seth.
Okay.
Seth, I'm surprised you don't have just one of these in your boat.
I did, but I gave them all to Chester.
Oh, okay.
Good for you.
He's a good guy.
R.I.P.
I just saw him.
Oh, that's good.
I just fished with him for a week.
To be clear, he's alive.
Yeah.
He just doesn't work immediately anymore.
Chester and I had the best week of smallmouth fishing we've ever experienced in our life.
Tell me more.
Last week, bad walleye fishing.
What state?
Montana.
Okay.
That's it.
Uh-huh.
Give me some numbers.
Size, quantity.
Oh, we found a. Well, our best five-fish bag was. Just over 23 pounds.
Damn.
But we just found a school of, like, over 100 smallies.
And they were hungry right now.
Yeah, we caught so many.
It was very fun.
That was during the work week, correct?
No giants, but 23 pounds isn't bad.
That was between Monday and Friday.
That was, yeah.
It was a work trip.
That's nice.
Is everybody ready?
Seth says planar board.
Randall, planar board.
Oh, good job.
Riva, floater.
Good job.
Dane, buoy.
Alyssa, without an answer.
Brody, planar board.
They got it.
The correct answer is a planar board.
Planar boards are used by anglers targeting walleye, salmon, trout, stripers, and crappie.
Their purpose is to allow trolling anglers to fish with extra lines.
Sometimes this is done to maximize the amount of rods one vessel can use,
while other times anglers want to fish multiple depths or get their lure away from the boat.
If in shallow water, there is a rudimentary drawing of what a planar board would do for you.
Oh, that's some frustrating fishing when you get all that shit tangled up.
It is.
It is.
And then especially if you like go through a snag or something and you got multiple.
I was going to ask, is something like that ever worth it, Seth?
Not for me, but people love to do it.
Then you like hook like a 14-incher on that damn thing and the board weighs more than the fish does.
Yeah.
All right.
Here's a correct answer review so far.
One was meanmouth bass.
Two, Alaska, California, Oregon.
Three, Pulitzer Prize.
Four, Windicator.
Five, The Parent Trap.
Six, Ohio.
Seven, recruitment, retention, reactivation.
Eight, crockpot.
Nine, planar board.
Phil, scoreboard update.
It's down to Randall and Brody.
We have eight and seven points, respectively.
Question 10.
The topic is hunting.
This next great question.
It's from Chris Medveds.
In the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Migratory Bird Survey,
code M-A-L-L stands for mallard,
W-O-D-U stands for wood duck,
and N-O-P-I stands for blank, blank.
Brody has it, but Randall is also writing an answer.
If Randall can get this one right, he will secure the victory.
But if he gets it wrong and Brody gets it right, then we'll go to overtime.
In the U.S. Randall, do you have two words written down?
I do.
Okay.
Do you think they're right?
I don't know.
It's. Not as good of a guess as I have,
but then Seth made weird eye contact with them.
I did hear kind of a smirk.
I noticed how we ended with fishing and then birds.
Yeah.
Two stripes.
We were out to get you after that Ohio Buckeye question.
Yeah.
N-O-P-I stands for blank, blank.
Quit pretending it's hard.
I think it's hard.
Seth's got me all twisted up.
Follow the pattern.
Does everyone have this?
I have an answer.
Randall has one of those too.
Is everybody ready?
Seth says northern pintail.
Jesus.
Randall says northern pintail.
Reva says northern pigeon.
Dane, northern pigeon.
Dane, northern pintail.
Alyssa without an answer.
Brody, northern pintail.
The correct answer is the northern pintail.
I was just making you sweat.
Yeah, it was well done.
You did.
Each species in this survey is given a four-letter code.
Most of them are obvious, but a few require some explanation.
For example, Canada goose is T-C-A-G and light goose is T-L-T-G.
That T at the beginning represents total Canada geese or total light geese
and doesn't split them into subspecies.
All right, Randall is today's winner with nine points.
He got the Shelby Index right on the nose.
What are you going to do with that $500 donation?
He's checking his DMs.
He didn't consider he could be the winner.
I want to say the organization is called the Mobile Bay Keepers.
I'll find the exact name of it at some point down the road.
Does it have something to do with a jubilee?
Yeah, because one of my favorite questions that you've asked, Spencer,
had to do with jubilees, and I didn't know what a jubilee was.
And they just had a jubilee.
They did.
I got people in Mobile, and they let me know.
They sent me some photos.
It looked like a wild time, and I can't stop thinking about it.
So let's send this money to, I believe it's the Bay Keepers.
You're right.
It's the Mobile Bay Keepers protecting Alabama's coastal waters.
So now Randall can catch an invite to go join the jubilee someday.
Yeah, I just got to get that private aviation.
The timing of it, commercial air traffic won't work.
Well done, Randall.
You've got to be honest.
