This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed human. Man, I've been in all kinds of dicey, backcountry scenarios in my life. In fact, a couple weeks ago, we had a bad scare, and we thought we were in a situation where we were going to need to call in a helicopter because of one of our people with us having a pretty bad injury. Thankfully, things worked out, but it gets you to thinking. OnX now offers OnX SOS, powered by Overwatch Rescue. It's an add-on to your OnX Hunt membership. For $49.99 a year, you get a direct connection to Overwatch Rescue's Crisis Response Center. If you hit the SOS button, your GPS coordinates go out immediately, and a trained coordinator manages the response, search and rescue, or medical evacuation, and they cover the cost directly. No claims, no deductibles, no surprise bill after the fact. OnX SOS works alongside Garmin, Spot, and Zoleo satellite communicators, as well as competitors. OnX SOS is available on all compatible iPhones and Android phones you already carry. Add OnX SOS to your OnX Hunt membership for peace of mind. I got in my hand here, it was just clipped to my pocket, but it's in my hand right now, the Montana. It's MKC, Montana Knife Company's first folding knife. Design tested, built by actual hunters. The Montana is the first folder Josh Smith has built at production scale with a team of engineers and engineers. It's a great product. and machinists who could match what he does on the bench. Head to mkc.com today. That's mkc.com. These things are great. You are going to love this folding knife. For over 40 years, the Conservation Fund has raced to protect at-risk land before its loss. The forests, farmland, open spaces, and places that wildlife call home. They believe that people and nature depend on each other, so they act quickly to secure at-risk land before it's permanently lost, working alongside communities to help shape a future where people and nature thrive together. The result is more than protected land. It's thriving wildlife, working forests and farms, clean water, vibrant communities, and outdoor places people can enjoy for generations to come. With over 90,000 people living in nature, and 9 million acres protected across all 50 states, the Conservation Fund's approach gets real, lasting results. Learn more about how they do it at conservationfund.org. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. And there is a prize. Meat Eater will donate $500 to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing. I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Giannis, Randall, Brody, Seth, Alex, and Bobby Klassen. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from Meat Eater's four verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. Meat Eater Trivia is brought to you by one of my favorite beers, Bush Light. Head for the mountains. Bobby, this is your first time on the show. Tell folks what you do here at Meat Eater. I am the assistant. I'm the assistant controller here at Meat Eater. Sorry, Bobby, it's your first time. You've got to get up on the mic. Kissing that microphone. Right here. Thank you. What does a controller mean? Yeah, I've always wondered this. I control the money. Assistant controller of the money. Okay. That's it. That's it. Okay. Bobby, strengths and weaknesses when it comes to Meat Eater Trivia, hunting, fishing, conservation, cooking. I hope I don't eat these words. Strengths is probably fishing. I was a fishing guide in the past. Oh, where at? Here, out of Big Sky. Okay. For trout, you're a guide in trout. For trout, yep. Gallatin and Madison mostly. Hunting is probably going to be my weak point. All right. We'll find out here. We've got 10 questions to learn more about Bobby's wisdom. We have a mailbag question to start today's show. If you have a question you want the crew to answer, send your question to trivia at themeateater.com. The subject line mailbag. This is from Clark Newsome. I'm going on my first elk hunt this September in Tennessee and looking to buy some gear if I could only buy a single first light top for the hunt. What would be your choice? Yanni, what's your recommendation to Clark? September, Tennessee, elk. I believe we have that piece called the approach hoodie now as a built-in face mask. Okay. It's like a light to mid-weight synthetic. That's what I'd be in, in September. If you're going to give Clark another recommendation or two, what would be like your top three, you think? Then I'd probably just go with the Merino quarter zip. Um, wick sleeves on that or no in September in Tennessee, I'd probably, it's cut them off, you know, just keep the core warm, keep more, make it more breathable. And then one more, probably the, the, just the hooded wick. Any, any other recommendations in the room for Clark? I'd get a pair of gators to keep the ticks off your pants. I bet that is some ticky country there in September. I would say, uh, it's tough to recommend base layers. Because one man's body in the humidity in high seventies, low eighties of Tennessee in September, not the same as another man's body, but I would say the navigator. Okay. It's a nice, like when it cools down, that thing weighs nothing. A lot of insulation value for the weight. I think that'd be a really nice piece. Brody, what do you think? I'd just go with the old school kiln. Cause it's very versatile. You can use it for like, just the, just the outside. You could use it for a mid-layer, like just a good piece all around. All right. A lot of recommendations there, Clark. Good luck with that elk hunt. Sweaty. Uh, we have some housekeeping. He's hunting elk in Tennessee? He says he's, he's doing his, uh, first elk hunt in September. Oh, I thought it was deer. Hold on. That changes my answers. All right. All right. I'm kidding. You don't have anything to add then? No, same. All I can just think about is sweating. That's all. Yeah. I just keep thinking about sweat. Sounds hot. Uh, we have some crew news. Giannis is holding an event at the Middle East. Milwaukee meat eater store. Yanni, tell folks about it. Oh, he could, um, our buddy that we just answered the question for, he could come visit. Yeah. He could fly up to Milwaukee. Fly up to Milwaukee. It's, uh, July. What's the date? July 30th. July 30th. Almost the last day of the month, I believe. It's pretty close. Is it the 31st? I can't remember how many days July has. I'm not good at that game. It's the 31st. The guy like a controller probably easily, he knows. Big numbers guy. The thing is, it falls into the, all the rest have 31. If I did the rhyme right. But, uh, yeah, I'm going to be doing an elk seminar. So an hour of me just yakking about what I know about hunting elk. And we're going to do an hour of Q and A and then an hour of hanging out and, uh, BS and at the Milwaukee store. So it's at what? Five, five 30? Five. Five o'clock. Yeah. If you're listening to this on the day it drops, it's tomorrow. Whoa. Oh, yes. So you're going to have to be in the vicinity. If you're in Tennessee, get in your car right now. You might make it. If you're in Wisconsin, you can wait until tomorrow and drive on. What are you going to do? What are you going to teach people? If I was there, what would I learn? Oh man. Um, I'm trying to really frame it, you know, from a guy that's maybe never done gone in an elk hunt and lives in Wisconsin now and try and really push them towards, you know, pulling the trigger and taking that step to do it. So trying to just make it seem like it is something that's, um, attainable to them and make it simplify it all, you know? Okay. That's my goal. Uh, that is an elk hunting seminar with Yann. It's Thursday, July 30th at 5 PM. It's the Milwaukee media store at the corners of Brookfield. All right. The Shelby index for today is a three. So our winner should get six correct answers. And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil. Look, I need to know what I stand to win. Everything. How's that? You stand to win everything. Game on suckers. Question one. The topic is wildlife. This will be multiple choice. And this first great question is via John Schlesinger. One of our trivia question goats. What percentage of mammals are nocturnal? Is it 30%, 50%, 70% or 90%? 50, 70, 90. That's a wild question. That is a wild question. A wide spectrum of answers. I feel like we could see all four answers today. 30%, 50%, 70%, 90%. This is a stat via National Geographic. A three today. Three. It's a tough round. 30%, 50%, 70%, 90%. Brody, are you ready? Was she bummed out by that? Shelby was in, yeah. Rushing things along here. Sure, I'm ready. No, because she like kind of, it was like a one, I think, going into the final three questions. I think she got two of the last three. And so she felt relieved that she even had three. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says 70. Bobby. 30, Randall, 30, Alex, 30, Giannis, 30, Brody, 70. The correct answer is 70%. Brody and Seth got that one right. It's estimated that 70% of mammals are nocturnal, 20% are diurnal, 8% have irregular activity, and 2% are crepuscular. The International Dark Sky Discovery Center says that some nocturnal animals are in decline because of human lighting practices. They recommend limiting unnecessary outdoor lights as it can interfere with animal migrations, courtship, and pollinating. Name them. The 70%? Yeah, name them. Well, I'll name 10 for you, and then seven of them are going to be nocturnal. Here's question two. The topic is conservation. The Wild Sheep Foundation's Sheep Show. The Wild Sheep Foundation's Sheep Show is held every year in this city. The room has their swagger back. This whole side is very confident. Seth and Randall look like they have it. Bobby, do you think you have this one? This is a total guess. I haven't been yet. Never. You've been a few times. I'm still doing it. You're still drying out. That's not true, because we went and did it. We did a. We went and did a trivia there. Or a podcast there once. Oh, yeah. I think way back in like early, early media days. I assumed you had been there like three or four times by now, Yanni. That was like eight years ago or something. Randall, how many times have you been? Oh, five? Damn. It's a good time. Okay. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal. Reveal your answers. Seth says Reno. Bobby says Bozeman. The rest of the room says Reno. The correct answer is Reno, Nevada. I almost said it's a great time of year to be in Reno. Almost blew it. The next Sheep Show will be held February 3rd to February 6th, 2027. It will be their 50th Sheep Show. There are dozens of big game tags that are given out via auctions and raffles at the event. With about 90% of the funds. Going back to state agencies, the two most expensive auctions at the 2024 Sheep Show were for bighorn tags in Colorado and New Mexico. They sold for $600,000 each. Question three. The topic is fishing. This next great question is via Brian Parks. The alliterative phrase, quote, red, right, blank, refers to how boats should navigate marked waterways. Didn't even finish the question and Randall had his answer. Captain Randall. Expired Captain Randall. The alliterative phrase, red, right, blank, refers to how boats should navigate marked waterways. Yanni, do you have this one right? Yes, sir. I was taught this by the same man that sent you those devil's pocketbooks. Oh, okay. Very nice gift from Yanni's father-in-law. Who Yanni was watching. Mildly complimentary of. I said, how is he as a father-in-law? Yanni said, perfect. Those were his words. Sent me some mermaid's purses. I'm still trying to think of a nocturnal mammal other than bats. I have a lot of questions. Like, do we count as that because we operate around the clock? I would guess we're either part of the 20% that's diurnal or the 8% that's irregular. I'm crepuscular. You are not crepuscular. I am. That's what he's most active. Yeah, I'm kind of, during the day, it's just a big, come dinner time. You get a couple little upswings, huh? Yeah, coffee and then happy hour. It's tough to be crepuscular in the summertime when happy hour falls like four hours before sunset. Yeah, yeah. Still figuring that one out. Red, right, blank. Is everybody ready? Seth says, green. Is that what that says? Yeah. Bobby says, right. Randall, return. Alex, ready. Giannis, return. Brody, without an answer. The correct answer is return or returning. Red, right, returning. Means that you should keep red channel markers on your right when returning to a harbor. That means if you're leaving the harbor, then you should keep green markers on your right instead. This rule applies to waters in North America, South America, Japan, and South Korea. But for those in Europe, Australia, or Africa, it is red, left, returning. Oh. So, if you're in those international waters. That is very confusing. Did you get the first one right? No. Nice. Question four. The topic is hunting. Willie Robertson, Jason Aldean, and friend of the show, Luke Bryan, are among the crew members of this Duck Commander spinoff that focuses on big game. Willie Robertson, Jason Aldean, and my favorite country artist, Luke Bryan, are among the crew members of this Duck Commander spinoff. that focuses on big game. Now, are you being facetious there, Spencer? Yeah, I mean, if Luke were to ever turn on this show, which I'm guessing has not happened, there were two episodes where he would feel a little bullied, I think. Probably the one where I declared one of his songs the worst country song. What's going to happen when you guys run into each other in an airport parking lot? I don't think anything will happen. Is he the type of personality that likes to have public confrontations and have someone record it, or is that not him? I don't know about that, but he will respond to Instagram comments. The last time we talked about one of his hunting or fishing songs, we read some of the Instagram comments that he was responding to people who were critical of him with. Willie Robertson, Jason Aldean, and Luke Bryan are among the crew members of this Duck Commander spinoff that focuses on big game. Randall, do you have this one right? I don't think so. I know it somewhere. I'm not getting anywhere. Seth, you have this one right. I think so, yeah. Have you watched this show, you think? Yes. Okay. Because I remember hearing this fact at one point and sort of being astounded. Just blown away. And then forgot about it. Is everybody ready? Seth says, Buck Commander? Bobby? Buck Commander? Randall? Buck Commander? And then he put in parentheses, Boney Brigade. I wanted that one. I wanted that to be my answer, but this is the real one. Okay. Alex without an answer. Yanni? Buck Commander? Brody? Buck Commander? The correct answer is Buck Commander. Buck Commander started in 2007 and is currently on their 15th season. Their crew of Buckmen include country singers Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean and baseball players. Adam LaRoche, Ryan Langerhans, and Tumbo Martin. Their sister brands include Duck Commander, Strut Commander, and Finn Commander. Wow. Whole franchise. Good brand. Question five. The topic is woodsmanship. This is our listener question of the week, which was won by Aaron Campbell. For sending this great question, Aaron is going to get a $150 First Light gift card. If you want a chance to win the listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia at themeadeater.com. Vault toilet. An outhouse are synonyms for this five-letter word that's defined as, quote, an outdoor waterless toilet. Oh, my God. The room is stumped. Vault toilet and outhouse are synonyms for this five-letter word that's defined as an outdoor waterless toilet. Boy, I think so. Okay. This is question five. Oh, so we will get. We will get a scoreboard update from Phil the Engineer after this. Phil has it set to sauna setting in the podcast studio today. Is a waterless toilet a contradiction in terms? I don't know. That's the definition I found for this word, though. Toilet. Bobby, do you have this one right? Decent guess. It is five letters. I don't think so. Okay. I think Bobby and Randall are the only players with an answer. Yanni, can you address the sleeve situation? It's been a few months since we've seen you wearing sleeves. Some folks have commented on it. They've wrote emails about it. What's going on? Good. I'm glad that they're paying attention because they need to start doing it, too, and realize the freedom. That they'll feel without sleeves. If I take this time now to do this. And then you're going to give me the time to also think about my answer. Yeah. Because I know it's in there. How long of a response do you possibly have? Oh, no, I got a whole deal going here. Okay. So, like, personally, for me, I still now, after two months sleeveless, I walk into the grocery and I'm like, I'm not quite comfortable. And that's stupid. So I'm just going through like a thing where I want to become comfortable in my, literally in my own skin. Well, the next, the next logical extension of this program by which you're working towards equality and dress code, the bare midriff. I think that's your next frontier. Maybe. Yeah. Just everything from the ribs down. That's too much. So Yanni, now, uh, does gym clothes at work and you recommend if you're, uh, if you're a banker out there, if you're a teacher, start wearing the sleeveless shirts. No, see, unfortunately. Not everybody can do it at work, but as soon as you get out of work, change into your sleeveless. All right, Yanni, answer the question. Better yet, rip those sleeves right off. Answer the question, Yanni. Oh, gosh. Just give me just 30 seconds. I know it's in there. Outhouse are synonyms for this five letter word that's defined as an outdoor waterless toilet. Brody, did you come up with it? Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. I got a million. I'd be real mad. I got a million names in my head for this, but none of them five letters. It is a tough round of trivia so far. The Shelby index of three. Did Shelby get this one? Looking solid. She did not. Is everybody ready? Uh, I got something written down. Oh, my God. Without an answer. That's right. Bobby says potty. Randall says privy. Uh, Alex, without an answer. Yanni says privy. The correct answer is privy. I can't believe you got there, Yanni. If you watch it. Some Westerns, you get it right. The other definition of privy is, quote, to have secret or exclusive knowledge of something. The privy council. This definition, plus its use as an outdoor toilet, is because privy traces back to the Latin word privitus, which means private. Artville, halfway through the game. Scoreboard update. Scoreboard update is that Alex and Bobby are tied up with one point. Good job, Coach. Correction, I have zero. Alex, I've got zero. Yeah. Can we clip that as a sound effect? I promise you, I got zero. You got Reno, didn't you? Oh, yeah, you did get Reno. Sorry, I'm just jaded by my past experiences on the show. I mean, I can take it off. Let's take it off. I'm just jaded by my past experiences on the show. Seth and Brody are tied up with three points. Oh, that's no timeline. In first place, it's Randall Williams and Giannis. Sleeveless Patellis. Man, I didn't think you had privy in you. Oh, you got that? He did. I thought you were just going to flip over a blank whiteboard, actually. For me, it isn't really fall until the mornings get cold, the grouse start flushing, velvet starts coming off those buck antlers, garden season winds down, and I start getting really excited about getting my kids into the woods. If you are a Mountain Dew fan, it's also time for you to stock up your cooler with some dew for all the fall action. Born in the foothills. Mountain Dew is an American original, powering good times since two brothers created the beverage about three quarters of a century ago in Tennessee. Mark your best fall memories with the crisp, refreshing citrus kick of Mountain Dew. From hanging out around the bonfire to just hopping in your friend's truck and cruising the woods, get outside and enjoy a Mountain Dew. That's right. Enjoy the outdoors with Mountain Dew, an American original. Tasted great since 48. Look for Mountain Dew in stores near you. Summer's here. I'm already thinking about fall, and, man, I'm excited to get some Moultrie cameras out in the woods. I got a couple out now that I've been watching, but I'm going to get some more out there. Moultrie cellular trail cameras are built to last from summer through shed season on a single battery charge. This is true. You just run them and run them. Ace is tasked with finding this pro sports team's abducted mascot in the 1994 comedy Ace Ventura, Pet Detective. Randall has it. Alex has it. Alex has it. Alex has it. Alex has it. Alex has it. I think he's fun, and those Sonic movies could be worse, and he's pretty good at them. Okay. That's my opinion. You need the team name. The team name. That's right. Not the mascot. We're looking for the pro sports team. Yeah. I'm a bigger fan of. You need the city, too? When nature calls. You can just tell me the mascot. You don't have to say city. You could just say, if it was Montana State Bobcats, just Bobcats would work. Phil, what'd your kids think of the Sonic movies? I want to hear their review, since it was for them, not for you. I mean, they're not. We don't have them on repeat in the house, but we saw the last two in theaters. Nice. And I've had worse experiences during kids' movies in theaters. Are they familiar with Jim Carrey's older work? Yeah. We've watched this film as a family. You know, The Grinch is a classic. What about Liar Liar? We have not watched Liar Liar. It's a little racy. Yeah, that might be for when they're teenagers. Yeah. Is everybody ready? Some of them are. One of them is. Seth says the Chicago Bulls. Bobby, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Randall says the Miami Dolphins. Alex, Miami Dolphins. Giannis says the Miami Marlins. And Brody says Miami Dolphins. The correct answer is the Miami Dolphins. They're now the Florida Marlins. Ace Ventura is hired by the Dolphins to find Snowflake, the bottlenose dolphin. The thief is a retired Miami kicker, Ray Finkel, a fictional player who missed the game-winning field goal in a prior Super Bowl. Finkel also kidnaps Hall of Famer Dan Marino, who Finkel blames for the botched kick. Ace saves the day when he frees Snowflake and Marino just before the second half of that year's Super Bowl. Which the Dolphins are playing in. There is the movie poster for Ace Ventura, Pet Detective. Randall, do you have a review for us of Ace Ventura? I mean, I'll be honest. I saw When Nature Calls, the sequel, before seeing the original Pet Detective. I think that's a better, more complete film. Okay. Rank it for us among Dumb and Dumber and The Mask, his 1994 run. The Mask is one. I haven't revisited in quite some time. Okay. But I almost said, somebody stop me during this as a joke. But then I realized that was a bit of dialogue from The Mask, I think. It is. Can any of them really be better than Dumber and Dumber? No, Dumb and Dumber is. Dumber and Dumber? I think Dumb and Dumber is hard to. Yeah, we've also recently watched Dumb and Dumber and The Mask as a family. That's a Mount Rushmore of. Dumb and Dumber is probably the best out of those three. That's a Mount Rushmore of comedies. Question seven. This next great question is via Tristan. It was not so mm-mm good for this food brand in 2025 when they admitted to 5,400 violations of the Clean Water Act at the Maumee River. Yanni and Brody say, bam. The correct answer is bam. And I appreciate the exclamation points we saw in the room. Yannis, that's going to be your new catchphrase on roasts now, right? Ayo. Maybe. Emeril Lagasse is an award-winning Creole chef with a dozen restaurants. He rose to fame in the early 90s when he started hosting the Food Network show, How to Boil Water. His signature catchphrase, bam, is used to fire up studio audiences when he's seasoning a dish. I'm surprised that some hunting influencer hasn't co-opted that. The bam catchphrase? Could be you, Yanni. All right, Phil, scoreboard update. We have two questions left. Two left. It's a tight one. Anybody's game. Bobby works his way up to two. Alex has three. Seth has four. Ayo. But all tied up in first place with six points. A person are Yannis, Brody, and Randall. Question nine. Name three of the four states that touch the Delaware River. It's all in love up. I got my mom a Rachel Ray cookbook one year for Mother's Day when I was a kid. And I feel like she's the one who popularized the phrase E-V-O-O. Extra virgin olive oil. Is that river run north or south or east and west? Good question. Anybody know? Seth, do you have this one right? Yes. Pretty sure. Alex, he already has his whiteboard down. I've got at least one of those right. Okay. Who has fished this river? I have. Oh. Same. Okay. Many times. You're going to tell us about it after we reveal the answer. Probably not. Yeah. Not my geography of expertise. Okay. Bobby looking confident though. Yay or nay? I feel good about at least one of them. Okay. I don't know about all three. Alex, are you ready? Yeah. Let's do it. Seth says New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey. Wow. What a show off. Bobby says Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York. Randall, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey. Alex, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia. Yanni, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland. Brody, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey. The correct answers are Delaware, New York. New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Brody and Seth got that one without even putting Delaware down. Yeah. I don't think of it as a Delaware River. You know, it's weird. Good job, Brody and Seth. The Delaware River forms the border of Delaware and New Jersey. New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania and New York. The Delaware River Club says the upper stretch of the river is, quote, home to the best wild trout fishing east of the Rockies. Jeez. The middle section is New York. The lower stretch is known for its legendary American shad, and the lower stretch is famous for its striped bass. Seth, Delaware River, what were you catching? Middle section. Take a guess. Middle section. American shad. Yep. Okay. What'd you do with those shad? You know, I don't remember what we did with them. We might have threw them back. What do you do to catch an American shad? We would just get in, like, runs. They would, like, kind of stage before, like, a quick section of river, and you would get in there. There was shad darts, and they would just kind of flutter back there in the current, and as they were coming up through, they would hit them. Any bycatch doing that? No, we always just caught shad. All right, here's a correct answer review so far. One was 70% of mammals are nocturnal. Two, Reno. Three, red, right, returning. Four, buck commander. Five, privy. Six, Miami dolphins. Seven, Campbell's soup. Eight, bam. Nine, Delaware, New York, New Jersey. Pennsylvania, Phil, scoreboard update. Giannis hit a hurdle with that last question, but he's still in the game with six points. Brody and Randall have pulled ahead with seven points. Final question, question 10. National Deer Association says this six-letter plant is, quote, perhaps the most popular food plot for deer. Alex, real quick to answer. Seth, real quick to answer. Randall, quick to answer. And now we race. If Randall and Brody can get this one wrong and Yanni can get this one wrong, one right i have it right okay but i doubt these two are gonna bomb brody do you have this one i have a six letter word
