EP 333: Where Are You At? Shifting from Prisoner to Producer

In this transcript, Jeff Busky challenges dentists to honestly evaluate where they are in all areas of life—practice, marriage, relationships, health, spirituality, leadership, and happiness. He notes that about 40% of dentists report being unhappy and encourages a mindset pivot from operating as a "prisoner" to a "producer." He outlines four common problems: mistaking a capacity problem for a production problem, living as a one-dimensional person, viewing marriage and children as distractions, and chasing money while losing power and purpose. The solutions involve increasing personal power and capacity, becoming a four-dimensional human being who harmonizes body, relationships, purpose, and business, treating family as a superpower, and gaining strategic clarity. Jeff introduces "The Code," a framework starting with facing facts, then processing feelings honestly, focusing on what matters, and ultimately achieving freedom. He emphasizes that many people lie to themselves and suppress emotions, which can lead to explosive outbursts. The goal is to create synergy across all life domains, enabling dentists to build successful practices and meaningful lives simultaneously.

(upbeat music) Hey everybody, it's your doc Jeff Busky, creator and founder of Limitless Dentists where we've cracked the code, the game of finding the system, the unlocking power, productivity, and profitability all will building practices and lives that matter. Welcome to Jump Start with Jeff today's topic is this. - So where you at in your practice? Then let's switch gears and just ask the question, where you at in your marriage if you're married? How are you operating with your spouse? Are you guys connected? Do you guys have deep intimate connection? Do you guys have the ability to sit and talk and visit and have great conversation? And you guys have your own individual targets of where you wanted to go. And do you guys have a target as a couple? Do you guys have this ability to collide and then resolve conflict? Do you guys have or is it more a lot of lines like you're operating like roommates with the rings? Or you just kind of tolerate one another or you get triggered so quickly around each other. What is your current reality? Do you guys go out and spend alone in daytime or date night or adventure night with each other? Do you guys create that? Do you guys create the space or the favorable environments to do that? So where you at? Where you at in your marriage? If you're not married in your inner spiritual life, where you at there? Not married and don't have serious relationships. Where you at in your other relationships? Let's look at that. I'll write that one out to you. Where you at in relationships? Are you being a great steward of your relationships? Do you reach out to friends? Do you create the opportunities to get together? Do you spend time conversing? Or is it convenience? Are you operating with your relationships out of convenience? Where you at inside of your body and your health? Is your body serving you? Is your body operating in a way that energizes you? Or is your body beginning to get deconditioned over time? Have you put on extra 10 pounds, extra 20 pounds? Maybe it's extra 30 or 40 pounds. Where's your energy at inside of your body? Dennis, you're also far down your body. Very hard on your body. Are you setting yourself up? So you've got great posture to work with inside of there. What are you doing to protect your body? Do you stretch? Do you work out? Do you keep your core solid? How do you set yourself up to be successful? Not only inside of your practice, but at home. If you've got kids, do you have the energy and the ability to want to get down on the floor and play with them or go out in the yard and play with them and do your activities that you want to be able to do? So just start to think about these things, guys. Where you at? It's a simple question. Where you at? I'm just giving you some different areas to start to think about where you at. Where you at spiritually, do you feel like you are on purpose and on point? Do you know your purpose? How do you tie your purpose into your practice? And then what is your relationship with God? What is your relationship inside of that space there? So where you at inside of your spirituality? Where you at inside of your leadership? Leadership is often very misunderstood. And we'll get into that later today to kind of wrap up some things. I've got some things for you, regards that. A lot of which leadership is talked about today, if you sit there and really look at it and pick it apart, many of the ways that people define leadership today is really just management. It's not leadership. And we'll talk a little bit more about that. And I'll give you some skill sets that I think are important and imperative that great leaders possess. Talk about that today too. And where are you at with this? Where are you at with your happiness and your joy? Start out just a little bit ago saying that about 40% of Dennis report being unhappy. And that's really sad when you sit there and think about it. That's a huge part of the population inside of our practicing world. Enjoy. You know, joy is really is what our default saying is. It's what we came into this world with was with joy. And so when we sit there and look at these things, I asked the question of where you're at. I wrote out here, you guys on Instagram. You can't see what I'm right out of my iPad. You can always jump in here with me personally. Got the link in my bio. But what I'm drawing out here is I asked the question, where are you at? Where are you at in practice? Where are you at in your marriage? Where are you at in your relationships? Where are you at in your body? Your health? Where are you at in your spirituality? Where are you at in your leadership? Where are you at in your happiness and your joy? Just a simple question. And see what we've got to look at here is we've got to start to create this pivot. So our mindset has to pivot. In order for us to start to look at operating not no longer as a as a prisoner inside of our practice and really inside of our life, and we're operating as a producer, let's start to tackle some of the things that our mindset has to shift in. So in order to do that, let's just introduce, I'm going to introduce four problems and four different possibilities. So we can start to see as the prisoner, here's the problems that we're doing, dealing with. As a producer, this is where we need to be. This is where our mindset has to shift to. Cool. You guys good with that? Yeah. All right. Cool. Let's look at this. Let's roll. So I'm going to write this out here. I'm going to do my best to explain why I'm right now for you guys to live on Instagram as well as on LinkedIn and over on YouTube. So prisoner. Let's look at problem and draw this out like this problem. Number one, problem number one is this is that you think you've got a production problem. So let's write that down. The reality is, is that you've got a capacity problem. Problem is is that you're actually leaking power and gives you capacity problem. That's problem number one. Versus over here, let's look at this as a producer. Well, possibility number one is that you have found a way to increase your power. Make a little better era on that and increase your capacity and realize that the best and the greatest investment that you can do is looking at how do I manage and maximize this power and capacity daily with something that is repeatable and renewable as well as most importantly sustainable. Because it's easy to get on the bandwagon for something and do something for a few weeks and then watch it just taper off and peter out. And so that is a huge, huge part of it. So what we want to look at here is prisoner problem number one, production, you think you've got a production problem. The reality and the truth is that you're typically leaking power and you've got a capacity problem. Let's even look at that from a leadership standpoint. So we talked about where you are. We're out inside of your leadership. Let's say you're in your practice and you're coming in and you're dealing with some pretty significant issues. They're bringing you some issues today or problems today that are really at a level six or seven. But you're showing up in a place of power and capacity from a level three. Well, you are going to be stressed out. Your day is going to be leaving that day in chaos. And that's not a fun way to be in practice. You can't have that capacity. I have housed a big enough container for yourself and for the people that you're leading in order to take on that craziness and order you take on that chaos. This on a lot of us show up as firefighters. We're going to have stuff and ship brought to us every single day inside of our practice. And you've got to learn how to be able to take and utilize that and how the capacity as well as the certainty in order to direct your team and direct your patients into what needs to be done and guide them. All right, so let's jump in here. Problem number two. Let's look at this. What's problem number two? Problem number two is that you operate in as a one-dimensional human being. What I mean by that? Well, tell me if this has ever been true for you and it may be true for you right now. Some of you are like, man, my health, my fitness is on fire. Where are you, Steve? You can just jack. I'm joking a little bit of having a little fun. But you can say, my health, my fitness, my body is on point. Take care of it. I work out every day. I eat well. Awesome. And you spend so much time there and you're so hyper focused on that. And I love the fact if you are hyper focused on your body and you're taking great care of your body, there's a higher tendency to start taking care of the rest of things too. But the fact is it can become so one-sided that you forget to then say, I'm going to take that same passion and I'm going to make sure that I'm pouring that into my practice. So I can manage that so I can grow it so it can be successful. I'm going to take that same energy and pour that into my family. So I'm not taking that for granted and watching those relationships diminish. And I'm going to take that same energy and put that into my purpose and my spirituality. But many of us have operated for years and years and years as a one-dimensional person. interventional individual. Let's switch gears away from body. Let's even look at it from the perspective of Oh crap. My practice is in trouble. I need to produce. I need to not having the new patient flow that I got that I need So now I spend the next several months hyper focused on marketing marketing advertising Getting the patients in that I need to get in and I'm stressed about it I'm putting in all this time now for to get this role and I get it going but in the meantime Because of all the time that I've had to put in I've neglected my body. I've neglected my family. I'm definitely not on my purpose Does that make sense? Because this is a pattern that I see all the time. I see this show up all the time So we're looking at this problem of this one-dimensional Being in the way that we're operating. There's got different possibility over here as a producer Possibility over here is where we look at having it all and we operate as a four-dimensional human being was that if like that means There we create synergy and harmony across four areas inside of our world across four domains across our body or health Our fitness our being our spirituality our purpose and our balance our relationships our spouse our kids the people in our lives that matter Our team members people that we love people that love us also to our patients our friends our ability to impact our neighbors and neighborhoods all of those things are Operable out of that balance and then we've got the last part which is our business our practice our bank accounts So imagine this if you're a guy and imagine let's see we start to operate this way and we learn how to become better husband's better father's better Businessmen and also spiritually on point all operating in harmony and synergy simultaneously That's what you can live this game with and it is a game We gamify the system let's look at problem number three problem number three problem number three and This is something I'm sharing these and I've been guilty of every single one of these okay problem number three marriage and kids Fortunately the mindset is is that man they are a distraction me building successful practice or practices That's the way I used to think for a long time like Man I'm tied for this I got learned this new marketing campaign. I've got to put this in play I've got to manage this I've got to do I I put so much on me and push my family away for so long To point of where I almost cost me my second week already blew one out Because I was operating under the same patterns and the same systems and premises that were broken Lot of the way in which this world operates in the way in which we're taught how to operate inside of dentistry is broken So that's why I'm here to fix it I'm here to show up and be a divine and reckoning ball that says fuck this we don't need the way that the current system is operating Let's look at a different way is it the only way no it is just a way But it's a way that can be very very successful if you put it in the play So problem number three marriage kids Are being a distraction to the building your successful practice or practices versus over here Possibility No three And that is where your marriage In your children Are you superprone? If I wake up and my wife and I have a fight I'm gonna go in that day and I am going to kind of suck a little bit Meaning that I'll still provide some great dentistry But the way in which I am connecting with my patients the way in which I'm connecting with my team members I'm not a hundred percent at all Unless face it Our team members deserve a hundred percent of us Patients are hiring us to pay us to be a hundred percent with them They deserve that So that means that you've got to show up in such a way that you are on point already Coming into that's in there making sense. So making sense to you guys so far All right, let's look at problem number four problem Burst four As you operate again, these are problems that has you continue to have the mice that that operates that keeps you a prisoner inside of your practice So this is looking at chasing money while leaking power profits and Purpose Without any clue as to why you can't get ahead Think about that we talked a little bit about that You think it's one thing like you think it's a production problem, but it's really a power problem You're so hyper focused on oh my gosh, I got to make this money I got to make this because I got all overhead up got all these bills to pay or I'm wanting to expand the practice I'm wanting to add in additional operatories. I'm wanting to grow it this way and you're so hyper focused on that and don't realize why am I struggling? I can't get ahead This is focuses on the wrong thing You have fractured focus So versus possibility Number four where you become strategic strategic legal You're able to do more But less Why is that because you have a significant amount of clarity? And we're gonna get into here in just a little bit of how to do that and certainty Where's that star? Oh It all starts with the facts the truth and let's do with that. Let's actually jump into our first framework here. Give us up Water you guys getting this you guys buying this so far? Getting this I hope so so let's roll here. Let's go. I'm gonna move this up here. We're gonna do framework number one Framework number one is very simple It is the code The code the code the code code is very simple Saying and that is very simple stop line You might say, well Jeff. I don't lie. I don't lie You might not blatantly lie to others, but I can guarantee you you lie to yourself We all do and we all have So one of the things that we want to look at breaking is how do we break that we break that with the code? That's where we start to live by code So four parts that make up the code And this is gonna become valuable to you so if you got something to write this down you might want to get something to write this down So part one of the code is the facts part two There's the feelings part three It's gonna be to focus part four We are free so we're gonna tie that in with this facts about getting real with those facts Getting real and honest since it comes our truth of those facts right it talks about truth and how this ties in so significantly And we got our feelings and our feelings we're gonna get raw on we're gonna really look at and dive into our feelings and our emotions And tapping into that Most women have a much greater opportunity and tendency to be able to express their feelings better than us as men As men many of us have been taught to push those feelings down To avoid things and unfortunately just to eat those feelings And for me for years and years and years That's what I did It's very unhealthy very Because you take all this frustration and upset and you start to push that down and then what happens is frustration When it's not dealt with becomes anger and then when anger isn't dealt with It becomes rage and then when that happens and that explodes out It's like the upload button up taking a beach ball pushing it under the water under the water and pushing it down Down down down and down and further and further and then what happens that beach balls let go It's gonna rubbed up at a significant force And oftentimes when that releases it is around and on the people that we love the most And it's unfortunate So we'll learn how to at least acknowledge the feelings that we're feeling around it around whatever it is

FAQs

The four problems are: thinking you have a production problem when you actually have a capacity problem, operating as a one-dimensional human being, viewing marriage and kids as a distraction to building a successful practice, and chasing money while leaking power, profits, and purpose without knowing why you can't get ahead.

A dentist can shift by increasing power and capacity daily with a repeatable, renewable, and sustainable system, operating as a four-dimensional human being across health, spirituality, relationships, and business, and viewing family as a superpower rather than a distraction.

The code is a framework to break self-deception. Its four parts are: facts, feelings, focus, and free.

Suppressing feelings leads to frustration turning into anger and rage, which can explode onto loved ones. Acknowledging feelings allows for healthier processing and prevents harm to relationships.

A dentist can create synergy by operating as a four-dimensional human being, harmonizing health, spirituality, relationships, and business simultaneously, rather than focusing on just one area.

A production problem is thinking you need to produce more, but the real issue is a capacity problem where you are leaking power and cannot handle the chaos or challenges effectively.
