Ep 216: Dealing with Challenges in Life

In this episode, host Michael Wall uses a personal anecdote about enduring a torn contact lens to frame a discussion on the necessity of challenges in life. He argues that growth is impossible without facing difficulties and that avoiding them hinders purpose. A key emphasis is placed on parental responsibility: adults should not only talk about resilience but also model it for their children by sharing their own struggles and solutions, thereby equipping the next generation to handle life's inevitable obstacles. Wall extends this principle to the professional realm, criticizing an entitlement culture that expects rewards without effort. He advocates for a mindset of adding value by doing more than one is paid to do, asserting that this leads to greater success. Referencing historical figures like the founding fathers, he concludes that societal progress requires individuals to willingly embrace and push through challenges, transforming both themselves and their communities through persistent effort and kindness.

Welcome in to the Michael Wall Show. Hey, if you're watching this on YouTube and not listening via podcast, you may notice got a little bit of a Bloodshot eye. No, I did not get in a fight. I Actually had a contact that broke in three places three not one not two But three places in my eye and so I thought you know, let me tie this into a show That I think would work well called dealing with challenges in life. We're gonna talk about that today on the Michael Wall Show All right, so dealing with challenges in life, you know, this is something that I think we all have we all have to address We all have to think about and I think sometimes in life we we can find ourselves looking for ways to avoid challenges avoid difficult times avoiding You know just situations that we don't feel comfortable in But I got to tell you life is all about challenges quite honestly if you want to grow you must be challenged There is no way to grow outside of being challenged and so here I am this morning and I'm literally getting ready to shoot the show and Our our teams here and cameras are set up. Everything's ready to go and I'm literally trying to move my contact around in my left Eye and somehow it tears so it tears. I pulled a piece out pulled another piece out and I'm matching it together I'm like, wait a minute. I don't think that's the whole contact. I think there's still a piece in there So as I'm literally shooting this now I think there's a piece of contact somewhere in my eye left eye that I cannot Seem to find at the moment so I'm gonna have to get maybe a big spray of water down the eye to get that out I don't know But the point is is I could have just said, you know what? Hey, let's just do this another time I don't really feel like doing it right now. My eye is sore. I can't see clearly or I could just say, you know what? The teams here everybody's ready. The cameras are set up. Let's just go. Let's do this. I'll work through this and I think in life sometimes If you're a parent that's listening to this I think it's so important that we not only talk to our children about but probably even more importantly than talk to Model in front of our children the idea of what it looks like to push through challenging things Now I know sometimes you might face challenging things along your way along your day in life and in business and in other things and you know your kids can sometimes be immune to that because they don't really know what's happening or what's going on They don't really know the challenges that you had to maybe push through right and I think part of that process of Modeling in front of your kids as you go and deal with challenges in life is the idea of taking time to sit down with them and say hey guys Listen, I just want you to be aware. These are some things that kind of came on my path this week or yesterday or whatever and this is how I dealt with them I think the reason that's so important is because it gives your kids the ability to understand that life isn't just You know all video games and cupcakes. I mean there's challenge literal challenges along the way And they need to learn they need to be able to build the muscles to learn how to get through them and If they watch you and they listen to you and they hear you talk through your process of how you've dealt with them Maybe times where you did a bad job. Maybe times where you did a great job all of these things are training tools for your kids You know in the Bible back Years and years and years ago. The Israelites used to stack up rocks in different areas to basically Be a marker as a place of where God did something miraculous And so that way as as you know other generations were coming in the past They might walk by that area with the stones stacked up and they would say why are these stones here? Oh, you know what son? Let me let me tell you why these stones are here Oh, you know what daughter? Let me let me tell you why these stones are here. God showed up in a great way and here's what he did I think that's so important Because I think in life we sometimes are in a place where we can live our life and do our thing Even inside of our family and we're not sharing some of these experiences With our kids You know when I was younger I grew up my dad had a heating and air conditioning company still does had rentals and realists different real estate And I remember going on jobs with him and I remember watching him share You know important tips and and really the truth of who Christ was to others and and just encourage other people along the way while we were on the journey I watched him you know financially take care of things from time to time for other people. I watched that happen. I physically got to see that Then I made an impact on my life and I don't think I really even realized at the time The impact that it made but it did and so we're all going to deal with challenges in life and I think To number one understand that that is the reality You know don't try and just live life where you're trying to say okay. I'm just gonna um avoid challenges I'm just gonna you know try and live my life in such a way that I cannot have any issues at all or any hard times at all Because if you do that you'll find yourself in a place where you are certainly not be living out your purpose And you'll probably be in a place where you may fall subject To someone else actually taking care of you along the way could be the government Okay So we have to realize that challenges are part of life We've gotten our paradigm shifted in our culture today You know, we have a lot of employees that show up and say hey, I want to get paid. I want to make the money I need I deserve this I deserve that I deserve this And I shouldn't have to go through any challenges to get really to where I want to go Well, I got to tell you that's because they've been coddled for years Yeah, parents. It's your fault For giving your kids everything that they ask for whenever they want it. It's your fault Well now we have to change the tide Because these kids are expectant There's a generation of people that are expectant They feel like they can show up and just they deserve things for just being there because they got participation trophies When they played sports It's not how the world works You know you don't go to an oven that is let's say fired by Wood right that the fire in the oven is fired by wood and you stand there by the oven you say give me some heat And then you're all mad at the oven because the oven's not giving you any heat It's like what you know the person standing there looking at like what are you doing you got to put wood In the oven and then you got to light it and then you got to let it burn a little bit till the warmth You know gets around and then you can get some heat Well, maybe to get that wood you got to go out you got to cut the tree down you got to get an axe you got to do some physical work You got to cut the the the logs that you have in a smaller portions and then you bring it in and then you get and then finally You're going to get the heat that's the way life works It's the way life works life doesn't work in such a way that you say okay I'm going to I'm going to not encounter any challenges. I'm going to take complete easy street I'm going to do everything that I can to avoid controversy and challenge And then I'll reach my goals It's not how it works. It's not how it works folks If you have shared that kind of conversation if you tried to bubble wrap your kids along the way You're doing them a greater disservice Than actually benefiting them you really are I love this quote from Zig Ziglar. I wrote it down So I wouldn't get it wrong and it's something that I've used for years and years and years not only in sharing But things like that in my own mind But it says this now this is in relation to a job or work okay, but you can equate this really to anything And it says this if you do more than you're paid to do The day will come when you are paid more for what you do Let me say that again if you do more than you're paid to do The day will come when you are paid more for what you do So let's break that down and think about that and apply that to life and business If there's any business owners that are watching this show right now I think you would all agree and raise your hand in the reality that if you had an employee you had an employee That was willing to show up early stay late Go above and beyond Do way more work than their pay grade Instead of just show up and say well, this is all I'm paid to do and you know, I don't think I deserve I don't shouldn't have to do all these other things. No, no I think all business owners would say I would love to have an employee That's creative that thinks outside the box. It's looking forward to adding value To my company in helping us grow Right Yeah So if you're an employee Or or really an employee looking for a job or a younger person thinking about working somewhere my challenge to you is think about The job that you currently have are you really giving it your best Are you really working through challenges in life? Are you really really working through challenges at home that causes you to become a better person And if you're not, I want to challenge you to embrace Those challenges That's how you get better That's how you grow That's how you move and evolve into the person that you want to be you will never learn anything or let me say it this way You won't learn near as much from success As you will from failure We learn a lot from failure You know, I've been in business as many of you know the sponsors of this show You can learn more about them by heading over to leanonthewall.com Just companies helping families with their wealth, reduce taxes, etc I've learned a lot over the years in those companies not only by helping people But by interacting with folks By spending money on ideas. I can't tell you how many hundreds of thousands of dollars that I have literally spent On ideas that didn't work out But I learned from them I learned from them you see the younger people today the younger employees today say well You should pay me x because I deserve this and the entrepreneur saying wait a minute time out I spent lots of money trying to figure stuff out and you're coming to the table not even adding any value And you want more So remember when you do more than you're paid to do the day will come when you are paid more for what you do And I think it's a society as a culture We must understand that challenges are necessary to push us towards where we need to be I think about our founding fathers you know as a church last weekend coach Mullins preached on It's just really a great message on on on speaking truth But he talked a little bit about our founding fathers. They were imperfect men chasing a perfect dream Which was to have a free society Where people could do and act and live the way they wanted to live without tyranny of the government And one of the things that I know is our founding fathers fought through many Many many challenges in fact most all of them gave up all of their Basically freedoms themselves to fight for this cause the freedoms of just doing whatever they wanted whatever They wanted to do it right they were committed to fighting for this cause they were committed To intentionally putting themselves in the road of being challenged and going through challenges And I believe that if we ever want to really see our country Our culture change We have to take the reins and we have to say you know what there's going to be some challenging times But I'm not going to back away from it. I'm actually going to step into it We need men and women today that are willing to step into challenges That are willing to step into hard times that are willing to step in and say hey sign me up because I'm here To help change the future I'm able I'm willing I'm ready And I'm going to do whatever I need to do But in life challenges will come again as I'm talking to you in this show and I'm going to land the plane I can literally still feel Something in my eyes bothering me and I could have just said I'm not going to do this And I know there's things that are much more Challenging than that in life I get that But it's a small little thing that I wanted to share with you because I know that in life If we don't challenge ourselves and push ourselves through the small things we probably won't push ourselves through the big things And I think that's something we really need to think about so parents Make the effort to Share what matters with your kids so you can help build in them what is necessary for them to grow And they're kind of adults that actually add value to the society instead of looking for what they can get for themselves If you're an employer or an employee specifically Do more than you're paid to do Push through challenges Look for ways to get better look for ways to add more value than your job Show up early stay late And don't just be there don't just be a warm body in the seat Look for ways to really add value how can I get better how can I improve how can I give more Than I'm paid to do I think if we live a life like that as a culture as a country You know we will be in a place Where we will see our society will see our country and we will see our world change why Because when you do more than you're called to do or paid to do or need to do And you push through challenges Oftentimes along the way you're adding a lot of value to people And you're helping other people out You're lending a hand You're stopping alongside the road to help somebody and even though it's inconvenient These types of acts change our world One little act of kindness at a time So push through challenges and then I'll help you push into your purpose Listen if you have questions we love your feedback As always you can just head over to michael d wall. com michael d wall Dot com Love to love to hear your stuff there.
