Hello, and welcome back to, and how does that make you feel and awaken podcast? I'm Jack, and today we're unpacking something that quietly lingers in so many people's relationships, the impact of betrayal. Not just betrayal itself, but how it follows you, how it shows up in who you trust, how you connect, and what you expect from love. Because betrayal doesn't end when it happens. For many people, it becomes a lens, a survival instinct, a story about how safe it is to love again, and if you've ever noticed yourself pulling away, getting suspicious, or waiting for the worst, even when nothing's gone wrong, this episode is for you. So what does betrayal really do to you? When most people think of betrayal, they think of cheating, but betrayal comes in many forms. Being lied to by someone you trusted, being abandoned when you needed support, being manipulated, ghastly, or emotionally exploited. And what makes betrayal so devastating is that it breaks something deeper than the relationship. It breaks your sense of reality. It makes you think, if I didn't see that coming, can I trust myself? If someone could hurt me like that, can I trust anyone ever again? Betrayal isn't just about what they did, it's about what it now means. You start questioning everything, were the good moments even real? Did I ignore the red flags, am I stupid for believing people? The emotional injury is often a mix of grief, anger, confusion and shame. And most people never fully process that, they just move on and carry it all with them. So how does it show up in future relationships? Here's where betrayal becomes a pattern even if you're not aware of it. Firstly in hyper vigilance, you become constantly alert, scanning for clues, reading between the lines, expecting people to lie, to leave, or to let you down. Someone nothing's wrong, you just can't relax, because somewhere deep down your nervous system is wired for betrayal now. It doesn't believe safety is real. Secondly, control as protection. You try to stay in control of every dynamic, you ask a lot of questions, you keep score and you anticipate worst case scenarios so you'll never be caught off guard again. But control doesn't create safety, it creates tension. And eventually the people you're trying to keep close start to feel pushed away. Third, disconnection or attachment. For some the reaction is the opposite. You keep relationships surface level, you never fully let yourself attach, because if you don't get too close you can't be hurt again. But emotional distance is its own kind of loneliness, you're there, but you're not really in it. And fourth, reenactment, the one that people don't expect. Because without realizing it you're drawn to people who recreate the same dynamic that hurt you. Why? Because part of you wants to fix it to finally make it safe to get the ending that you never got. But what ends up happening is this, you're stuck in a loop, choosing people who are unavailable untrustworthy or inconsistent. Just to prove that you will write not to trust in the first place. And that's not healing, it's just repetition of the past. So what can healing from betrayal actually look like? Let's be real, healing betrayal takes more than time. It takes intention. It's not just about forgiving the other person, it's about rebuilding trust in yourself. So here's what that can look like. Firstly, you need to name the story you took from it. Betrayal always comes with a story. People always leave, I'm not worth loyalty, you can't rely on anyone. Those stories are not facts, they're trauma responses. They were conclusions you made when your heart was trying to protect itself. But if you want to love again, really love, you need to challenge those stories. So ask yourself, what did I learn from that experience? Is that belief still helping me or just protecting me from getting close? Secondly, rebuilding trust with yourself. It's easy to focus on whether someone else is trustworthy, but here's the harder question. Do you trust yourself? Do you trust yourself to spot red flags to leave when you're being disrespected, to believe your gut, to know your worth? The more you trust yourself, the less you need to control others, because now you know you'll protect your own peace. And third, give new people a clean slate. This is the hardest part for most people. But new people don't deserve your old wounds. They didn't cause the betrayal, and they can't fix it either. Every time you punish someone today for what someone else did yesterday, you're not protecting yourself, you're pushing away the very connection you're craving. So let yourself slowly test safety, and let it be based on who they are, not who they remind you of. So remember this, betrayal hurts, of course it does. It breaks your sense of trust in others and in yourself. But healing doesn't mean pretending it did not happen. It means refusing to let that moment define you. You don't have to keep reliving the same story. You don't have to push people away to feel safe, and you don't have to stay stuck in protection mode. You can learn to trust again. Not because everyone is safe, but because you are strong enough to walk away when they're not. And that, that is what freedom actually looks like. As always, thank you so much for listening.
