- Hello, hello, we're live.
- We did it. - We did it.
We made it.
As usual guys, we had technical difficulties,
but we have Ali and a Jeremy.
- We do, and we have a whole studio audience today,
which we would show you,
but that would probably explode our whole setup,
'cause we just spent an hour getting this rigged.
Thank you guys for tuning in, Jeremy,
who is also here.
(laughing)
Thank you, Jeremy.
We appreciate your support.
- I'm Christina.
- I'm justina.
Welcome to Magnolia Street.
You're musically inspired,
Paractical Magic Fan & Podcasts.
- Every week we deep dive on different aspects
of the books and the movies.
- And the two films now.
- And treat your ears to our very own,
practical magic inspired, original music.
- This is crazy being in the same room,
'cause we can say things at the same time.
- This is the only other time we've recorded
in the same room together.
What was the first one?
- Haunting's, Exorcisms and Ex Bluff Friends.
It was there, that's two.
- That's right.
- Yes.
- So this episode is sponsored by Phantom Wines.
- That is right.
This episode is also intended for audiences 21
and over.
So please drink responsibly.
- We just got back from seeing Practical Magic too, guys.
- We did.
- We did.
- We do have big dots.
But before that, we just wanna say congrats once again
to our winner, Charlie Dot Mills,
who just won our giveaway.
- Congratulations!
- So everybody give it up for Charlie.

Before we get started, should we pour ourselves
a little bit of that Phantom juice?
- Let's juice it.
- All right.
- Yes, and juice us up, please.
We sound so relaxed right now.
You guys did it.

We got a Phantom proprietary red blend here.
- This is so backwards with the Margarita glass.

Everybody who helped us get everything situated.
Avi is the man of the hour today, right?
He did a lot of our tech today.
So, and Jeremy, you held a mean speaker

We were recording a music video.
We're not gonna give any secrets away yet,

some sneaky peekies through the bushes.

- Anyway, great, we could laugh about it now.
- I know, it wasn't funny earlier, but I know.
I'm glad you're okay.
I'm feeling okay, my foot's a little swollen,
but it'll be fine.
- But, another Magnolia Street blood sacrifice
because the drummer for the, when he was setting up,
- That's right.
- For that song, was it?
- Yeah, yeah, was it the first song that we did?
- It can be.
- I think it was the same song.
- That's what I'm saying.
- That's a song curse.
- That's a blood.
(laughing)
- The song is out for blood.
- For sure.
- All right, should we cut the shit
and give the fans what they want?
- Oh, 'cause we know they wanna hear about me.
- What, our thoughts are about PM2.
- I know.
- Right?
- I'm ready.
- Are you guys ready?
- Yeah.
Do we all have big thoughts about this?
- This is a big thought.
- Spoiler.
- Okay, yes, okay, so from here on out,
there will be major spoilers.
If you have not seen Practical Magic 2 yet,
we advise you maybe turn this off, go watch it,
and then come back and listen,
so you don't get spoiled.
But yes, we will be spoiling everything for you
because we're gonna give you our thoughts unfiltered.
Yeah, we do have a little bit of an outline here.
Okay, so on the count of three,
I want everybody in the room to say one word
of what you thought about Practical Magic.
- On the count of three,
or should we, 'cause that's gonna get a little--
- Each person?
- Yeah, each person.
Okay, we'll go around maybe one word.
- One word, so think of your word.
- Emotional.
- Enjoyable.
- I also said emotional.
- Also emotional.
- Well.
- Magical.
- Oh.
- Fine.
(laughing)
- Expected on the nose, hyphenated.
- Yeah.
- It was pretty on the nose.
- It was pretty on the, well,
if we're talking like movie cannon.
I feel like like a lot of book people
are gonna be highly disappointed.
I feel like there's so much to say.
- There is, this is a loaded,
this is gonna be a loaded next hour,
how long we're on here.
- I feel like you could see it
without seeing the first one.
- Right.
- Which is unfortunate because they really just laid out,
this is this thing.
And it was like, boop, right on the nose.
I'm like, your audience is smarter than that.
- Yeah.
- And I felt stupid.
- I felt cheated.
- I wanna hear what you have to say.
- I feel like, I expected all of that.
I feel like, honestly, we saw a lot of that movie,
via the trailer.
- Yeah.
- I feel like we're gonna build up
in all the marketing.
I don't feel like a lot was a surprise.
I really don't.
- I feel like everything else was just inserted.
- Yeah.
- Like get A to B.
- Right.
- Situations.
- Yes.
- We did see all the big stuff.
- Yes.
- Before I forget it,
I thought there was more chemistry with solar mucleod.
- Oh, yeah, yeah.
- And Kyle, I was like, that is,
that's an actor right there.
Like he's like stealing the scene and he came in so late.
- Yeah.
- I wanted to just put that out there.
I was like, that is better chemistry
than whatever Gideon was doing.
I don't know.
Gideon was in a cold and half of me honest.
- So like, he really didn't have,
I mean, he was involved in a lot of the marketing,
but I feel like, yeah,
he was like in a coma half the movies.
So now we're gonna kind of sort this,
our thoughts into like five different buckets.
So we have the magic,
the Owens women, the lore, the callbacks,
'cause there were many.
And the, we need to talk about that pile, okay?
- Okay.
- So the last category is pretty important.
We don't have to solve this tonight,
which I know we want to,
but we're gonna come to you guys with another episode.
- Pulling it apart, like we're really analyzing it.
- We're gonna, I think we're gonna have to watch this again
before we like really take a couple of visits.
- Yeah, that's right, maybe we'll do that in October
'cause Christina is coming to visit.
We'll say that for then, but for now,
these are just our very raw initial off the cuff thoughts.
The question is, did the world still feel like practical magic?
- No. - You don't think it did.
- All of this CGI, like all of the,
this and the this and not Jillian going into a room
and just sensing, okay, that's fine.
- Yeah.
(laughs)
- And the, yeah.
- Yeah, the first initial, like what the fuck,
was when Sally and Jillian are fighting in the kitchen
and Franny comes in and she's like,
you guys are sisters, we'll get this.
- Yes.
- Yeah, and why did she, how does the odds,
how does she know about the scar thing?
- Like, I'm gonna put a highlighter on your scars.
- Yeah.
- Here you go.
- Remember your sisters, remember your blood?
- They did that in the first film.
They did that in confidence.
That was a private moment.
How did the odds know about that?
- I agree with you.
- That was the first moment that didn't,
it was a lot of CGI magic.
- Yeah, but the first, like, I did like,
that would caught me off guard.
- I did like that they showed automatic drawing
with Kylie 'cause that, and like in relation
to automatic writing.
- Yes.
- And the sensing that Antonia had.
Like, stop living when Kylie says, stop reading my mind.
Was she really, or was that just like a family-oriented,
you know, relationship that you can read mine sometimes?
- Right, I like that.
- I picked out a very little, little detail
when she was doing that automatic writing.
Did you pick it up when they did like,
the little flashes of things like in the phone booth
and like, they flashed on a little yellow flower.
It looked like a dandelion, but I'm convinced
it was a selendine.
- Remember? - Ooh. - Remember in book of magic
when they said that the field of the fans,
it was like, has the lesser selendine
or whatever the flower is. - Whatever the flower is.
I was like, those little details, but I was like,
but like the flash, I was like, oh, flower.
- You think that's what it was? - I think that's what it was.
- That's cool. - Yeah.
- I think they did pull a lot of little details
from the book that the people who haven't read the book
don't aren't gonna be able to enjoy.
- Right.
- That might have been one of those little pages
that Sandra Doggierd 'cause we saw her book,
but it was like, you know, she had a bunch of post-its in there.
- What did you think about?
- So you agree that the, it was overseas g-eyed.
- Oversee g-eyed, I think a lot of the magic
was a little overdone and not what we loved
about the first movie. - There was no surprises
'cause we saw it all in all the trailers.
- It was a little, not to say disappointing,
I enjoyed it.
It was a good watch.
Will I watch it again?
I don't know.
- Well, we have to, 'cause it's our job.
- Well, yeah, we're gonna watch it
'cause we have to pick it apart
and analyze the shit out of it.
But is it gonna be a Halloween staple is my point?
Like, I don't think so.
I don't, it's not gonna hold that same place in my heart
that the first one does every Halloween, every,
not even a Halloween, like every, like,
at least a couple times a month.
- It's like it's the comfort movie, you know?
- So chunked into the smallest little boxes of scenes,
right, that we have already seen in the trailer.
- Right.
- It was like, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- I think they made it.
- And it didn't wait to--
As flowing and like it didn't let your mind sink into what was happening because they were just like trying to get to the end
Right. Yeah, I think the world still did feel like practical magic in some senses
But the CGI was way over done. Franny. I think franny her kind of style maintained
I feel like like that green dress she had on at the end was really cool and Victorian
But like the stuff that they had on at the beginning. I was like all right. That was a little
apartment store immediate within the first two scenes into like the birthday party and
Then the funeral were I was like oh my gosh. These aunts are the best part of this film
I was like jet is the best part of this film right now because what is going on?
I don't know where I am. What universe I'm in the Amos vidie this not Amos videos the verbina store
Wasn't even mentioned not even working on a library
Which was kind of cool to see like Maria's
Possible jail cell door in the background because we know from the books that she did turn it
They turned it into a library. Yeah, but they didn't even explain like what happened to her whole previous like I know
There was so much that was not Gary died and but like yeah, they never mentioned what happened
It could have been if it was filmed on a different camera
It could have been a soap opera because there was so much information getting thrown at you
I agree in the beginning with the voiceovers between the two of them like they didn't
It's a very episodic race. Yeah, like we got to catch up. Hi. I'm Sally. I'm nice. This is my daughter Kylie
Yes, what I'm so sorry voiceover in the first one. That's like a different vibe different style of filming
I think I feel awful saying bad things about it because we've been waiting waiting waiting
But we knew we were gonna go in I think as it's own film. Yeah, was it predictable? Yes. Was it enjoyable?
It's not the worst. It was great message about family bond and like I
I'm watching it. I think I think the actors had great chemistry on the screen
I think Lee Pace and Sandra had more chemistry than I thought they were gonna have on the screen
You think they have a chemistry? Yes
Yeah, I don't know I I enjoyed watching them together, but yeah, I don't know it's just it definitely
It what I feel like it was expected and I don't know that that's necessarily a good thing
I want it to be surprised is shocked and we knew the progression that the good guys were gonna win
Yeah, here's Hillary Duff Tom Lachlan coming in. Yeah, I thought he was great. Yeah, he was really good
I thought oh and there was no red rain. There was no red rain. I thought okay, they're exploding him
They're killing him. Oh, which they killed a man before, but still like that was
They just burst him into flames like underworld like and like and style. Okay, so they killed Jimmy in the first one
And they killed him in this one how they can explain that one away like the town's people are just gonna be like
Where did Tom Bailey go where did it go and his name his last name was Bailey? I thought it was Barney
No, no, you're right. I think it was Bailey, but remember we were trying to figure out where we got the last name for Michael
There's so much. Yeah, I just feel terrible. I don't have my thoughts organized at all. No, it's just like
We're kind of hopping around because it's just like very raw initial like yeah reactions
Okay, yeah, I'm going to go through this with a fine tooth comb
I agree within the first 20 minutes you get Terry. Oh my god
Just because Diane weast is the most adorable thing ever we didn't talk about the thing that happened before the film
Which we have to talk about that, but I feel like
She's like what happened to her minor what happened so much happened in the course of the past couple we were put into an emotional state of
Or anything happened before the movie even started we will get there
But what I wanted to say to your points about Diane. Yes, in that one scene as aunt Jenny
She you know as you guys if you've read the book, you know that she hears death watch beetle
She knows her death is coming. They're kind of prepping for it
So she's kind of trying to like speak things up and put the send to this curse with the book of the Raven or whatever
So they kind of like have her birthday party at the end of the birthday party
They're sitting around having the margaritas and the way that she passed in the film was not how I was envisioning it in the book
At all like I just figure like you know she goes to sleep. She passes in the sleep and they find her privately and she died
The way that they did it gave me chills and it was so beautiful and that really got me emotional and that's a mention
Stevie they plan Stevie next only top like me recorded with her now a voice who which is like she is
Of the generation of stock her and I am right there. It's just yeah, it was beautiful
That's not the way they did her passing. I agree like to know God I gotta get emotional
Yeah, I know like to know if you knew somebody was passing and they you had that time to say goodbye
Yeah, and they only had that one day. They found out that one day. Hey, so
She said her last word, which was shenanigans, which I was like, okay, that's weird
But it's a silly word. Yeah, it was a silly word, but at that wouldn't have picture that would have been like she did say
Live a lot. She did say live a lot. That was very that sentiment was nice
But then after she said shenanigans, she kind of just went
And then but but I did redeem herself when I saw her essence kind of escape through like star dust and that was like
Oh my god, I want to die. Yeah
That was magical that
Was probably the most maybe a subtle beautiful way to beautiful send off visually. Yeah, I have somebody pass from that family. I agree
Yeah, can we talk about Paula?
Okay, listen I am D.B. They name her character and everything and for like this whole time
I mentioned and then you saw her yeah, yeah, okay, do you want to know? No, I'm just like I'm like is she gonna come back around because
Jett and Sally are talking about her in the library and then you see her at the funeral
Which is she just walks by goes I?
No, no, go ahead
It was great. Yeah, you've been at a funeral in which somebody you've watched a
Pass by like who is that lady? Yeah great, and you like you don't know if you want to be her friend or like call her a cab
Like this girl's got a lot going on. Was it funny. Yes, I found it very funny
I did find it. I was giggling in some moments and like the whole slapstick Sally like
Jelly was more slapstick in this one which I loved so much. Yeah, the two of them were very slapsticky
Yeah, so what okay, let's see what first like moments of Sally in the library. I was like she is stressing me out on these stairs
She's like tumbling down the stairs. She's got her phone jetty's coming in. She's not aware of her surroundings
Yeah, she didn't hear Jack come in. What if somebody's gonna grab her butt and go and look for off the staircase
Did my did my voice ring in your head we're like this lady's like this woman's always in a crisis
This woman's always in a crisis exactly. So now the Owens women Sally, Jillian, the aunts, the daughters, and the newer generation
The relationships and their performances. I guess what do we think of the newer generation because that's really the newest thing about this cast
Right, Antonia wasn't in it for her. They did it again for a minute
She was less than 10 minutes. I'll blip total. Yeah, she they gave her like the nurse shavin like granted
That is her occupation in the book, but like no storyline. No, she got some little little ugly eyes from somebody at the wedding after
I even noticed that though the girl in the the yellow dress with the short hair. Yes. No, I did you know what I like. Yeah, I guess I yeah
I didn't even notice that Joey King's performance emotionally. Yeah, she was very she knows how to cry
I think she's always done like really good cry performances. I think the only time I've ever seen her acting is her like
You know, so I mean that's pretty on brand for hers. I agree. She's an excellent cryer
She's great with the emotion. There was I think a lack of genuine
Connectivity when your daughter is crying to you in the kitchen where you have been in the exact place
But it just looks like a stone. We're talking to a stone wall. I just not feeling. Yeah, yeah, they are older now
So I feel like if you're gonna feel pressured to keep up with, you know, hollywoods
They do look great. I'm not saying they don't look great. I'm just saying I'd noticed that they looked very different from
Screen to more recent interviews. I agree when it did go back to the aunts
I was so happy to see the aunts like more screen time because they were just kind of like comedic timing in the last one
And I think this one they had more emotion. Yeah, and their features were so beautiful to me
And I love that they got more screen time
We got to see the stockards acting and I know she's had stuff done too. Do it. Yeah, it was just kind of not
It wasn't distracting. It was distracting for me. Yeah, yeah a little bit
so as far as
Let's see the I guess the men that the new men that were casted. What do we think of Lee Pace?
What do we think of Sali and Zolo? I think I enjoyed Zolo's performance more than I thought I was going to as far as like the chemistry between him and Kylie
No, I mean like the beginning. I know I agree. He was really good at sleeping
But I feel like the like the intro part. I was like, okay, I could see the chemistry between him and Joey
I think they were trying to Gary Hallet Zolo
Because Gary came in and the third act and you had to trust him and like him you know, I mean I think
- We see him when we first see him,
not necessarily find him attractive,
but you trust him and that he would do anything for Sally.
Did I get that with Zolo and Kylie?
They were trying to do that same thing right off the kicker.
- Yeah. - Like, he's saying,
I love you. - He's way out.
He's a love bombing her. - Yeah, he's so hard.
- And one other thing that popped through my mind
was he went shopping for flowers for her
and then he got Michael's, right?
He did get Michael's.
How did she find him so fast?
In a hospital environment.
There's no way you're finding him in all of that chaos.
- But my question was,
like, why does every guy that likes the produce,
like the marketplace just hit?
(laughs)
Can't a guy just like-- - I just accidentally--
- Can't a guy just like cart some apples
or like buy some flowers without getting like shanked--
- Shanked. - Shanked.
- Yeah. - They're not good at looking for traffic.
- What is with these like men who fall in love with oranges?
- They need to look both ways
when they cross the goddamn street.
It's all I'm saying.
- Like I said, with Zolo, I didn't feel his chemistry
as much as like with Sully,
which was not the point of his character at all.
- Yeah. - Leapace eyebrows.
- That's all I could say.
- I also noticed like his, like,
he had a little more scruff on this side of the neck
than the other.
I was like, they couldn't even him out a little bit.
(laughs)
- Did you say something to him?
- We're very nitpicky, I know, I don't know.
It's not important.
- It's on important details.
There's just something on it. - Some of the writing.
- Yeah.
- And maybe Jeremy can back me on this was abysmal.
Like you are in dire danger.
Like I don't love it.
- I don't love it.
- I didn't notice another part where Sully kind of repeated
what somebody already said or like she was explaining
what was happening and I was like,
you didn't have to explain that.
- Yes.
- Yeah.
- We're not done.
- Or like we saw something.
Like I think it was the page in the grimoire
that like changed to the Lockland manner
and then Kylie goes, the Lockland manner.
You don't have to do that.
I don't know.
- I think that was the difference between this one
and the original is that the first one wasn't theatrics.
It wasn't dramatic.
It just kind of was like everyday life
and there were just little pieces of magic
inserted into all of that.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, Jeremy.
- Yeah.
- So there's been a thing recently where a lot of people
have been talking about how,
because these movies end up on streaming,
the writing is being tailored to that
where you have to say everything two or three times
because people are watching these things on their phones.
And I feel like this is maybe them predicting that
and writing for like that, now that's how you write
new movies and television is that you have to say
everything three times, which may be a symptom
- That is a good take.
- That is a good take.
Yeah, I wouldn't even thought of that.
- I think people, the plot, right?
- It's like what we're told today.
Like the page can't open and we were told that like three times.
- Yeah.
- In a not normal way that people communicate.
You're like, "Why would you say it to somebody there?
"You know what they already know, that it's a question?"
Like why would you say that?
Like exactly.
- Go ahead, don't keep going, no go.
- The part where the girls, the part that that bother
would be the most was when the girls were under the covers
and they were talking about like their childhood.
I'm like, "Why would you be like?"
- Yeah.
- Then this happened in our childhood.
I'm like, "Well, you already both would know that."
And I know it was just like to move the,
like to kind of reiterate the plot where it just seemed
a little lazy.
- On the note.
- On the note.
- Yes.
- And I agree with a lot of TV shows that drives me crazy.
- Yeah, I'm streaming.
- I would have to agree.
- Right, exactly.
- Sometimes books reiterate stuff too.
- That's true.
- That does happen.
- Yeah.
- It just felt like a little like,
"Yeah, well, when we were growing up, the cursing,
"but you don't really believe that, dude."
And I'm like, "Goodbye."
- "Goodbye."
- You have that in a better way.
- Exactly.
- Yeah, I agree.
- Exactly.
- The most interesting thing is that part of the charm
of the first movie, at least for me seeing it
as a 15-year-old was the almost spiritual love stuff.
And having that little magic moment
where Little Antony was he slipping pancakes.
- Right, like that all happened in the first movie
and it was like, it was like men in black,
like the flashy thing.
- Yeah.
- You were just supposed to forget all of that.
- I didn't love that.
- Yeah, I didn't love that either.
- No, memory, erasure, yeah.
- But that's basically what Sally did
and that's how they explained the whole they forgot.
They were witches.
- They forgave that a little too easily.
- They did!
- Yeah.
- Yeah, that's a major economy issue.
- Right, that one's working the gray, for sure.
In the book, what, I don't remember,
that's not what happened in the book, right?
They, she didn't like, mind erase that.
- Oh, what, so what didn't happen?
I'm trying to remember.
- Yeah, I'm trying to remember too.
Do you guys, you just read it, right?
Do you remember?
What happened?
Do you remember?
- So I believe what happens in the first
in practical magic the book is that the girls aren't there
for any of it, so there's-
- Oh, there's. - Okay, yeah.
- I don't think you're right.
- For any of the Jimmy stuff, so then in book of magic,
there's no reason to hide it from them.
- Got it, yeah, she just doesn't tell them, right?
And then they found out at the funeral.
- Yes, that's what happened, so.
- Yep.
- Raymond's here.
- Oh my goodness.
- What's up, Ray?
- The story board designer.
- That's right.
- For practical magic, one and two.
- And two.
- Is hanging out.
- What's up, Ray?
- So sorry, we just saw that.
So we don't know what we're doing.
- Yeah, his birthday is today.
- What?
- Happy birthday, Ray.
- Happy birthday.
Should we sing?
- Happy birthday, too.
(laughing)
- We can sing Magnolissia for the thousandth day.
- Oh my god, we sing that so many times today.
- Yeah, spot on, so let me see what he says.
- I think that was it.
- That was the most recent comment.
- Yeah.
- We're so sorry, we're dragging this film.
- Yeah.
- But we are-
- Just keep it on the storyboard.
- First initial thoughts here, yeah.
Yeah, so we feel that some of it felt a little forced.
Some of it felt a little like they were kind of dumbing us,
the audience down a little bit with some of the-
- I had no idea about the say it three times,
like rule now with.
So it's for social media, is that right?
Is that right?
- For extreme.
- That makes sense because obviously,
this is probably gonna go to streaming pretty quick.
- He says I'm not here.
- People just like, they watched TV while they're scrolling,
right?
So yeah, I could see why they would do that.
But it's just frustrating, especially as a fan
of the first one, like, I know the first one
there was a lot of pacing issues as well as the first book.
But I don't know, I feel like the 90s
was such like a slower time.
People took the time to take in a plot,
whether it was a book or a movie.
And I think that's why we fell in love
with the first one so much.
So the fact that this one was like so fast paced,
so much information being thrown at you.
And they even took a lot of the details out of book of magic
to do this, like there was no Vincent.
And that was to be expected.
I didn't, wasn't expecting a Vincent at all.
- There was some other, there were a couple other details.
- Yes, question.
- Chad was mentioned, please remind me,
why Chad was mentioned in Guchad?
- Because they stole it from Magnolia Street podcast.
- Chad, because they've been listening,
the connection is in season one,
we called Jimmy a Transylvanian Chad
and made a shirt about it.
So she has a thing for Chad's.
- So you can't pay me to think that they're not listening
to Magnolia Street podcast.
- Raymond's listening, Raymond.
- All right, there's so much.
- There really is. - There really is a lot.
I'm trying to think of what others,
I loved the house, the texture,
seeing the different rooms.
I love that they rebuild everything on the first floor
to be able to see through the rooms,
but it was so fast and we barely spent any time there.
It was like an extended ad for the airport
and for UK transportation.
- Oh, one thing that I really did wanna mention,
what grinds your gears?
- You know what grind in my gears?
Okay, all right, we just, as you guys know,
actually today, our episode on the Brands and Collabs aired.
When those brands and collapse come out,
you know, you just think a movie's coming out,
they're gonna have all these brands sponsorship,
but what they did, which they did.
And we were trying to like figure out which ones made sense,
which ones didn't.
And obviously the tequila made sense
because I'm in Imargaritas,
but I wasn't expecting to see Astral Tequila being used
in the film or an ninja being used in the film.
- I definitely could see it in some of the trailer,
it was on the table.
- Well, the box was on the table, but it was wrapped.
- But, well, I was saying that Tequila.
So like the bottle tequila.
- And then Jillian does take it and swing from it.
- I don't remember seeing that one.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
- But that kind of like threw me.
I was like, okay, they're doing brand placement in this now.
Like, that didn't happen in the first.
That, that to me was not like the world of the Owens.
The world of the Owens was very DIY,
like thrifted aesthetic,
and now we're getting brands shoved in our face
in the first like 20 minutes of the movie.
So that put me off a little bit.
Even though we already knew that they were doing those collapse,
you know what I think I was okay with though, was the use of a cell phone.
- It was supposed to be in the future and she's coordinating.
I think we only saw it with Sally and then with Kylie checking her messages.
- We did see a laptop on Jetstask.
- On Jetstask?
- Yes, on Jetstask.
- What?
- I got to watch this thing.
- Because when she flips open the book, it was like right behind it.
And I was like, what?
- Jet's using a laptop now?
- Yeah, so Jetstask is up with the technology.
- And whatever year that was supposed to be, did they ever--
- I think it was supposed to be 15 years after the last one.
- So guys do the math.
What's 15 years after 98?
- Actually, Matt has never been a strong point.
- Actually, it's 29 years old.
- If I may point out a detail, then I'm going very quickly.
On Michael's graveyard, and it's said that he died in 2003.
- No, all of the math is not about the grades.
- Not about the math and any of this--
- Yeah, the math is not the point.
- It's a magical world.
- It just time doesn't exist.
It's just one big fee per dream.
- This movie actually didn't even come out.
This is just a dream right now.
- Oh, we're on.
- Could you imagine if we woke up tomorrow
in the dream the whole fucking thing?
- The whole past two years?
- Oh no!
- Please don't say that true.
- Oh my god, would you imagine guys?
- Oh, Raymond said no phone tree.
- No phone tree.
- There was no phone tree.
- No, you're right.
- No phone tree ladies from the first one.
- I would have loved to have seen Margot Martin.
and Dale make a cameo, or the woman who played Clara?
- Carla.
- But we got Paula.
- We did get Paula.
- We love Paula.
- We love Rachel's best friends.
- Wait, hold on.
I can't reach this way once that bottle.
- All right, so you guys might have met Lorraine in Texas,
but Christina painted this for me.
(laughing)
She said, "I did set the house on fire."
(laughing)
So that's my alter ego.
So maybe we'll post some prints of these on the Patreon.
- Oh my god, that would be fantastic.
- You guys want this as a print?
- That is just in his.
- I did set the nice, I did set the house on fire.
- Which, they had a similar joke in the film.
- I can't recall what it was exactly,
but you didn't like the house on fire.
It was something with the--
- That was so weird.
- That was so weird.
- That was so fucking weird.
- I feel like we're being listened to.
- Did we?
- Did we manifest this thing?
- Did we think we wrote it?
- Raymond.
(laughing)
- Did we write this thing?
- He's like, "These guys are delusional."
- We wish we did.
- Yes.
- I'm just kind of salty, we didn't get a backstory on why,
like did Sally sell her verbina shop?
When did she decide to become a librarian?
Right?
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
- What's funny to me is that a lot of March
has the verbina about that.
- That's right.
- That wasn't mentioned in the film.
- Good, good.
Pick up on that.
Yeah, I didn't even think about that.
Yeah.
- She gave up, she gave up,
used to her magic side, so.
- That's right.
- She gave up the top, very interesting story.
- I guess that kind of in a nutshell
might kind of explain it.
- No one wrote it.
- I would have loved a more practical,
- Practical melatonin.
- Practical melatonin.
- No one wrote it, I think.
- Okay, so let's talk about the lore.
- Okay. - The lore.
- Okay, so this bucket,
what did PM2-at or change confirm about the mythology
that you spent four years analyzing?
- I don't change about the lore.
- Yeah.
- That we fantasized that we were questioning,
oh, what happened? What did it add to change about the lore?
- Yeah.
- Yes.
- Sally did not give up her magic.
- It didn't change at all.
- In the book,
it gives up her magic.
- That's right, to save Kylie, right?
That's right.
- She embraced it.
- She embraced it.
- Yeah, that's right.
- I really did enjoy the banter between them.
- Yeah, it was cute.
- I think Avi has said before,
Nicole was accent just kind of slip-sick.
- Oh yeah.
- All the way through all the time.
- Yeah.
- I like it, I just enjoy it.
- Also, I noticed Macy's accent a little bit too.
It was like, she still sounds British to me.
- Raymond.
- What was your favorite part about working on it?
Did Jazeen make you watch this movie against your will?
- He had to draw it out.
- I know. He's like, I've already drawn it.
I don't need to watch it.
- I kept calling the Thomas character, Thomas.
- Love that.
- That's the dude from Harry Potter, right?
- Tom Riddle.
- Tom Locklin, we call him Hillary.
- Tom, Hillary Duff Locklin.
- Because in the book.
- That's right.
- He brings the rain.
- He brings the rain happen,
but it doesn't happen in the movie.
That's one of the pieces of lore.
No red rain in the movie.
- Yes, yes, yes, yes.
Ian's mom, just a blip.
I feel like she was very pivotal.
Margaret Wright in the book was so well written.
Helping Jillian, helping Sally.
Like she was just a lovely character
that we just kind of little started.
- I have a good one.
I have a good one.
Are you ready for this?
- No mention of Amelia Bossano writing the book
of the Raven.
- No.
- Okay, she was like key.
Key part of Book of Magic.
Because the origins of the Book of the Raven.
- This would have been a great mini series.
- Do you agree?
- Can we make this a mini series, please?
- I agree, because there was so much information.
- They might.
- Yeah.
- She did very good.
- Sandra said in a recent interview.
- She's a practical magic.
- We put it in the whole of it in the book.
What do we use now?
What do we save for later term?
- I also heard her say that if they do a third,
then the younger witches will carry on.
They would pass a torch to the younger actresses.
- Has she?
- No.
- What did Alice say?
- So, I've just noticed in her purge honey
that she's been promoting the witches of Cambridge.
- She's not saying that the ointment's going in,
but this is not going in.
- Okay, see, I have theories.
I have not read witches of Cambridge yet,
but I do have theories that we're going to get a lot
of maybe Easter eggs and crossover.
I think so.
- I agree.
- I can give a little rest of it.
- You show of, like, the rules of magic.
- Yeah.
- Tom Green.
- And I mean, we're not just figuring that out.
- He saw it less than nine years.
- Yeah.
- That's right.
Little flashes.
- Oh, yeah.
- 'Cause Zena.
- What is, oh, probably.
- Oh, 'cause Zena.
- And Kylie didn't change.
- 'Cause Zena.
- And Kylie didn't change when she went.
Oh, yes, but she went to the dark side.
- Oh, that's her pretty change.
- Like, she had two at the end.
- Did he tattoo her?
- Oh.
- He the left-hand magic.
- What?
- Then he has time to do that.
- Never explain.
When he knocked her, when he roofed her.
- Oh, yeah.
Well, what, I mean, I don't know.
Is he also a tattoo artist?
- No, I don't know.
- I don't know.
I've read that in some other kind of books.
- Did you?
- Yeah, we don't talk about those.
- Oh, okay.
- Those kind of books.
- But it was not.
- He and had a tattoo that Sally noticed.
And she was like, oh, you walked the left-handed path.
And then I don't think I saw Kylie's arm with a tattoo on it.
And at the end, right, she had a big one on her forearm.
- Okay.
- Did you also notice Nicole, her snake tattoo looked different,
right?
- Yes.
- And she had new tattoos on her.
- No, Kylie's magic.
When she opened the book of the Raven and the London tattoo
on the right hand.
- Did it?
It's the left-handed path.
- Come on!
- Yeah.
- It always kills me every time like that scene.
We see that scene in Christina goes,
she would have gotten a fine for lighting that candle
or that lighting that stage in that hotel room.
- Raymond is missing with us.
- I'm gonna, we cannot confirm this.
- Wait, Raymond says PN3 is coming out in 2050.
For, are you yanking or are you?
- No, I'm not.
- He's pushing on our legs.
- Yeah, he's a jokester.
- Mm-hmm.
- Yeah.
- I like the detail about the hair.
That's a good point.
- That is a good point.
- Yeah, okay.
What else?
So the red rain, they scrapped that.
- And I know like obviously all expected the erasure
of the dress is so sad.
- It is sad.
- And leaving for any behind as well.
- Yeah.
- Oh yeah, she was supposed to go to essence
with everything.
- Right.
- That's right.
- I kind of liked how they, it was kind of quirky.
It was cute.
- Yeah.
- The way that they played it.
- I would love all that extra stuff to not focus on.
But I think that book had a lot of grief-oriented healing.
- Yeah.
- And like how they find Franny and how they, you know,
like, have to deal with.
- Vincent comes back into the light
because they agree with the loss of him
when he skates the country.
- It's just hard.
- It would have been hard for him to,
there would have been like a whole other five blocks.
Like I said, it's like, it was like an early move.
So it's hard.
- Yeah, but it's done.
The rules and magic TV show is planned.
I feel like they put it in.
- 100%.
- 100%.
- We are for hire.
(laughs)
- I just want to hire us to write the next.
- We got you.
- Yeah, was there anything else about the lore
that changed or anything else you can think of?
- Yes.
- Yes.
- Yes.
- We were talking about when Franny walks into the water
and she sees the river bank.
But I was convinced I read the book.
And in the book, I wasn't sure if it was Maria Owens,
Hannah Owens or Franny.
- Who was greeting her?
- Yeah, there was on the other side.
- It was on the other side.
- Oh well.
- It just says that there's a--
- Just a spirit.
- I forgot about that.
- That's why all of them would have been so powerful
'cause it's great.
- Oh my God, that's great.
All of them.
Why did they do that?
- That would have been so good.
We should have wrote this.
- We got ideas.
- We got ideas, guys.
- We were excited to do this.
- Yes.
I agree with that.
- That was a very emotional scene.
- I saw that.
- Even though, even though, yes.
- It was emotional.
- It was handled a certain way.
- Yeah, I lost it with Jet.
- Yeah.
- The Jet storylines.
- I think those emotional points were with the ones.
- I agree.
- Because they had what's worthing in their 70s.
- Yeah.
- 70 years together.
- Yeah.
- And to see that friendship, like to you, my friend.
- Oh my God, this is killing me.
- Kill me now.
- And I think, yeah.
- When Tom Locklin was explaining like the whole thing
to Kylie, like how he was related to her,
that kind of confused me.
He was like, so Hannah had another child?
- Why did they just make her Rebecca?
- Right.
- 'Cause that's where the line split.
- That's where the line split.
- I don't know.
- So what the hell?
- I don't know.
- All right.
I'm gonna have to like, when we watch it,
I'm gonna have to get that a part of the more.
- You know what?
- Or they did change that I was like,
oh, that's cool.
Was they made Ian like a maybe bad guy?
- I don't know.
- And I was like, what a surprise.
- Okay.
- That leads us to our next bucket, the callbacks.
- A frying pan, hello, frying pan, which we're gonna have
a frying pan murders episode?
- That is right.
- 'Cause there's on the list.
- More than one.
- There has been more than one.
- And we found that out when we did our hauntings,
exorcisms and ex-boyfriends episode back in like season one.
- Oh, that, we discovered this in the moment.
And just reading our scripts and we had some spooky things
happen and we were talking about, was it Poltergeist?
- Poltergeist, pineapple guy.
- Pineapple guys, they can't say that.
- That's why everything's going missing.
- There is footage of us just reading and he had him
in the head with a frying pan, it was amazing.
- That was wild how we came across that.
So yeah, there are apparently a lot of frying pan,
more frying pan murders than you would think.
- Yeah.
- So we're definitely gonna do an episode on that.
- I think Halloween season, I would have liked to see
'cause did I miss it?
I thought Sally goes out and turns on the light at one point
and gives like the eyeballs.
happens. What? I thought she was going to pick that up. Am I? Did they just cut it a certain
way to make it look like that for the trade? It was gone. That was missing. Right, because
Franny shuts the light off. She's like, sorry, everybody go the fuck home. And then that's
never resolved. They never turn the light back on at the end for people. Right? Did they
didn't turn it on for before the wedding? No, they just had the wedding. Wow. Yeah. So, they invited
the whole town who dances their whole body. Yeah. There were some great dances. Yes, I was
rocking up at that guy. I love that. Alexandra is here. Lexie here. Okay, can we? Okay, Antonio,
thank God you're here. This is the perfect moment to talk about this. Okay, girl, you nearly
killed us. All right, we did. Okay. We got to tell our listeners what happened in the
beginning. Oh, my God. Okay. She's coming on. She's coming on. We're going to lie with
Lexie. Yes. Thank goodness. Because I got something to say to her. Wait, hold on. Lexie,
we just we just invited you on. I don't know if you got that. Oh, here she comes. That's
crazy. What are you doing here? You are a sneaky little mouse. Lexie. Oh, my goodness. Thank you so much. That was unreal. Yeah. We were we were
already emotional just seeing your face. Yeah. We were so happy to see you. That's awesome.
Thank you. What did you think of the movie? I'm still not just seeing it. I think like I
went like a matinee and then like while I was in the matinee, I was like, would you hate
it? I wish this again later tonight. Yeah. Where it's you know a little more cool and stuff.
So he's like, of course, so I'm I'm I've been again. Um, so I cried a lot. The first
one, the second one, I was I think I was just more prepared. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But
what do you guys think? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We finished a couple hours ago. We're just
doing our kind of like initial reaction thoughts right now. But we definitely want to see it
again before we like pick it apart like with a fine tooth cone. So yeah. I thought, you
know, it's got so much heart, which I think is what everyone was so desperate for. Yeah.
Agreed. There were definitely things like what? What the hell? But then there were also things
where like, okay, we feel like we saw a lot of what was on screen already and all like
the trailer and everything like that. So I feel like it was expected. But I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed the watch. I would definitely watch it again as not a job. You know, as not
because I'd want to pull in all those little details because I'd want to pull in all the
little details that they included in the little rooms and in their outfits. And I did enjoy
that they gave Antonia a amazing job. You know, and she's she does have these little like magical
things of like kind of being able to sense what her sister is thinking maybe a little bit.
And she called her kind of called her squeaky mouth. She called her mouse like a little mouse.
I did anything. I didn't. She referenced the little like a little mouse. Yes. I didn't
get that part out. Watching a third time. Yeah. Yeah. It for sure was so funny together,
right? Right. Yeah. You're so sweet. Yeah. That was the incredible gift. Yeah. How did you
feel? Sneaky little mouse. Sneaky little mouse. Yeah. I'm wearing your socks. Yeah. I hope
so. We should do that. It's a day. It's a day. It's a day. I'll let you get in before
Dallas, Jimmy. We did throw the wig. So who knows? Maybe we'll have another glass of wine.
Cheers. Cheers. I'm so good to see you. We love you. We love you, Lexi. Thanks for dropping
in. Bye. I don't think you've actually said what happened with Alexander. We didn't
say what we did. Well, yeah, we started to say what happened and then she popped on here,
which was kind of sweet. That's a great segment. Coincidentally. Coincidentally. She just
happened to be pop pop all while we said we said her ears were ringing. Her mouse ears
were ringing. Yeah. So what actually happens at the movie theater that we lost our shit
over? Tell them about our event. A little bit and then say about Marley. Marley was a real
real one. So we did an event at Penn Cinema in Littitt's PA last night and we had a little
booth set up with all of our hot cast off. We played some of our original Magnolia Street
songs. The marketing manager Marley came around and she pulled us aside like on our, like
not together. We weren't together when she told us both, right? She said you're going
to want to be a little early. Yeah. You're going to want to get here. She asked when we were
seeing it. We said we're seeing it tomorrow and she said, oh, you are. I was like, yeah,
why is that? I think she's like because we're actually, there's a surprise before e-screening
tonight. They're only doing it all just Thursday night. Yeah. And we're like, oh, okay. Like,
I made some, I guess, arrangements or whatever. They're going to do it tomorrow for you guys,
but just you are showing. So we were like, the surprise. I'm like, is Sandra and Nicole here?
Yeah. That's, I don't know. That would have been, she was saying, a little pencil of Anya Town.
Yeah. I mean, here comes these A-listas, because they have been popping into random theaters.
So I was like, it could be possible. But she was like, no, no, it's just a non-surprise.
And I was like, okay, so maybe it's just a non-screen surprise. I was thinking, maybe
maybe they recorded like a recording thing for a pen cinema. Exactly. Long wind behold,
we did not think Alexandra would be on a big screen. 30 feet high in front of us. And so she
did a little welcome message and hope everybody enjoyed the movie. And she said pen cinemas.
Thank you, thank you, pen cinema. And then she said, and I just want to give a shout out to
my friends. Just doing Christina. Just doing Christina's.
Oh, I know. Our bridge belts and louder eyes.
Alexandra, Patrick, or if you might know me, Helen Butter and Julia Owens from the first
fractal magic, I wanted to say hello. And I hope you all are still excited for the people
that you're about to see in just a few minutes. Thank you all for your love of the film.
For all this time, it's been great hearing from fans. And I hope you guys just have a
ball tonight. I want to send a shout out to pen cinemas for putting all this together.
And my good friends, Christina and justina.
We love you, let's do it. Oh my god.
Did you remember, there's no balls over your left shoulder.
Keep rosemary by your garden gate. You can't laugh and you're relaxed and fall in love with every
camp and you're in this equal in just a minute. Bye everyone. Have a great evening.
I hate to admit it, but I think that made me the most emotional out of the end.
It's dark now. It's getting the minute. Oh wow.
Right, like, I don't know. I like, I feel like that couldn't have been tops. Like,
because now we know we're personally, she's a friend of ours. So it's crazy that to see
her on the screen, addressing you in front of a room full of people.
Everybody behind us was like, who the what?
We're just like, you are like, and your mother knew the whole time.
She did though. You and they kept deceitful.
They're all about me. And I don't think it's so much like being singled out or like that we know somebody,
an actor of some kind, is that we were the same age that she was more or less than when she was
in that film that I hadn't brought us up and kind of raised us. So to have that connection to
the thing you love and then that person's in front of you saying like, I hope you enjoy this.
That's a thank you for being here. And I hope you enjoy this. Thank you for being here.
And then did you open cry? That cry face was probably the obvious I've ever cried.
And you remember the slang guitar that we put in a metal guitar?
You didn't open cry like that though. You just want like this tier.
I went, I'm going to hold this in. There was just like one lone tier that's strolled
down your face. And it was so like like just like classy tier.
I was like, literal, I did not have any issues.
And then you said, wait, is the screen stuck? And then I said, no, my face is just stuck like that.
I thought it five minutes because I think I'm playing it back.
And it was. I thought, no, I was just stuck like that.
My house on fire. My brain literally broke. Your brain was on fire.
That was so special. You really was.
Oh, can I just go back to the house?
Yes, go back to the house.
I thought Tom Burton, not Tim, Tom Burton, the set dresser, the set designer.
Oh, I liked the textures that he put on the house.
Was the house a way, fair kind of I think how it?
I think yes, I think it was a saturated heavily saturated.
We didn't get this name, Griffin Dunlady, but the low, beautiful glow of the
incandescent, the other lighting.
We also didn't get that Romy Williams curated coastal, I don't think.
I felt the coastal in the kitchen windows, but it definitely had everything was very bright.
Yes, the first thing was dark.
Yeah, even the kitchen felt like too, I don't know, I don't know if it was just the light.
It's if you're modernized, like I wasn't getting the same cozy.
lived in vibe as the first house. We did get some practical effects. That was cool. I like how they
called back to the flame thing at the end with the blowing of the candles. I did love that. And I love
how because Franny and Jet were no longer there at the end. I like that because I know you've had
something like spooky happening. Oh my god, yeah, of course. So that was a very practical effect. That
was a great call back. The beetle changed the beetle did change the sound the sound and the visual
change. Yeah, the lore about the beetle. So the person who hears it is not necessarily the person
who's going to get influenced, right? Because because Antonia heard it in the hospital,
but it wasn't for her. It was for Franny. But how did she know that? You know, yeah. So I don't
understand the beetle and the curse still muddled. Yeah, absolutely. And then how did they know
was for Jet and not for Franny when they were here. And it was like the week before that finally happened.
Well, Jillian doesn't live there. So that's why she was so upset with Sally for like you live here.
Why didn't she say something? Why are you using your gift? She was like, she was blaming her for
shutting everything off. She said, why didn't she pay attention and listen? Right. So they didn't know.
So I'm sure Franny did know, but the girls don't live there either. That is a college. Antonia's got
a place. That's true. I don't know. Yeah. I know which has to be a sacrifice for herself to die.
How does a death watch beetle know to go? How did he know to go to the next one, Franny? Yeah,
it's your father's gift. I'm like, how did the death one go to Franny? Because I just want you to
hit me with a little tap, hang on. Hello, hello, what's up? Yeah, I think it's because Jet left
that book for Franny to finish it off. What Jet started and couldn't finish because she died.
So I think Franny in turn was the one to die because to save Kylie, they needed to make a sacrifice
or to end the Christmas of her all. They needed to make a sacrifice and it had to be a witch
of the owns. Yeah. So I think that's why Franny was just like, all right, I'm old as fuck anyway.
I guess I'll take one of these with my friends. I want to be with my sister. Yeah, man.
And I've liked what was there, but I want more of it. I want more time. I want a bad guy.
And then the payoff of salad, like fighting back wasn't quite as fine. You guys did like it.
I enjoyed the bad guy. I just wanted more of it, I think. Yeah, he didn't really get a lot of screen time.
No, I thought he did a great job, but like this secret room. Oh my god. Can you imagine the smell?
He's got the dead rabbit. Oh my god. He's got the, I'm sure he's feces. Oh my god. Yeah,
that was intense, but again, I did like the like, oh, there's a picture of them together.
Cause in the books, they were not colleagues, but like they knew each other. They knew each other
through school. So that was cool. And then the frying pan came in and he immediately they had a drink
and he forgave her. Yeah, that was what she could have killed him. Dude, that would have killed him
in the first movie. Both of those things killed Jimmy in the first movie. Okay. That was not
the regular hit. Right. Right. She hit him really hard. And then she forget like, yeah, I think
they, I think that one beating a dead horse, beating a dead Jimmy. I think it was, I think that one
definitely fell forced. I think they could have probably done without that. Or like, I know they were
trying to like, what? Right. That would be a grown up situation. I've been here too many times by,
like I would have rather seen that scene. I agree. Yeah. I think a, I think that was a forced call
that a practical thing, at least for women when, when Kylie and Tom are walking to like the ruins
or to his house. And she's like in front of him, she's like, you can go first. Yeah. Like, don't
be behind me. Yeah. That was like, wow, that is real right there to have to let you go ahead.
So I have an exit. Yep. I thought that was important. Yeah. Yeah. Is that crazy woman director. Right.
She did no on some level. The one thing that I will have to say is that Kylie in this movie and
throughout the books and even in the first movie is very intuitive and very in touch with like
what's going on. Yeah. Like she walked in and hurt. She looks at her mom like, what's wrong?
Like what's the matter? She's like, I think that's right. I'm just, I just can't find my spoon.
She picked up on that right away where Antonio walked in was like, hey, like just like didn't even,
it didn't even face her that there was something wrong with her mother. And then the whole like,
when Gideon gets hit, she kind of had the same reaction that Sally had when Michael got hit in the
first one. Like, like just like shot up. Oh, yeah. Yeah. She did. She just knew. She just knew
something happened and knew that she had to go for how intuitive she was. She was kind of like,
I don't know oblivious to this whole Tom Lachlan guy. Yeah. She didn't sense like he was bad dude
at all. I don't know man. I think that was the only thing that we noticed but she subconsciously
did. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like a subtle, subtle way and she's like, you know, we've all
had those red flags where we're just like, I'll just ignore that one. It's fine. Um, so yeah,
for sure. Whether any other callbacks, okay, that made us gasp, laugh, fry, or point at each other.
I just had like three or four while we were talking. So many callbacks, right? Yeah.
But what is wrong with you? Yes. Yeah. Very cute. Uh, Jillian said that to Sally at one point.
I don't remember what. I loved when Jillian like goes into room. She's like, it's weird in here.
Something's weird. Something's weird. Something's weird. Like that was cute. I was like, okay. Yeah.
And then yes, the whipped cream. The hand thing was the same. And she was like, well, you can
yeah, it was very much like. Oh, okay. When Ian, when she does hit Ian and he collapses and
Sally's underneath, it's like Jimmy in the car, Jillian's the one on the neat. And then Jimmy's
in the middle, right? Ian's in the middle. And then Sally was on top. And Jillian, she's like,
why do you have to be on top of all of us? You know, I think that was like, the three-seat-a-lil sandwich.
No, it's this time. No. Yeah. The little sandwich was going. I got emotional with the callbacks
with the first film, interplaying in the scenes. I was like, oh my god. Like all the, all the first
film stuff that was at the very end. Yes. That made me emotional. Yeah. I was like, oh my god,
it's from the first one. Yeah. And I hate to say that because like, you know, we were there to see
the second one. I know what I was like seeing the first stuff on. It just hits a place, you know.
I think both of the the girls together, Sally and Jillian, we're exactly the same. I liked the
conversation they had in their little Airbnb when they have like the vodka or whatever. Was it
you know the hamster thing? They didn't either. No, they didn't understand what they were talking about.
They didn't. But like, I feel like that was like kind of like went off on a tangent. I was like,
I don't think that's that conversation was necessary or they could have made it more meaningful.
I don't know. I think it was. It went over my head. I was like, what's this about hamsters?
All these details are gone. Yes. I was not expecting them to call back to this, right? Yeah,
they didn't have to. They didn't use a lot of other Latin. They did. Like a Latin. The Latin
that Kylie, yeah, Kylie when she's like repeating after Tom, I was like, okay, that's all she does.
She doesn't know what pushed you together. That was right. You're going to sit a little
tiny while it's been Jillian, like with your thing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that one was in the trailer.
So yeah. So we saw that one already. Were there any other ones?
The Harry Nelson song. Yeah. Yes. The coconut. I did it. Okay. So remember when we first
analyzed the trailer and the the roof jump and you were like, their dress is turning back? I was like,
no, it's a shadow. But if they did, it's red, black. But like, what was I don't understand?
Why did they go fully in black to communicate that that was like the magic, like carrying them down?
But it wasn't. Was it super successful? Yeah. The dress is the pool, but yeah. But I was like,
is it like, is it like, the shoes change? Like, I don't know. Yeah, the shoes change.
And then socks change. Like the magic lipstick. I feel like they're like black. It was kind of
the thing. Like, like, yeah, the shoes and the socks. And then it was like, the the black
smoke from the magic stick, they dressed it. And then I noticed at the end when they look
finally, like, like, landed, the bottom halves of their dresses were like, literary too.
Yeah. The wedding dress heads. Yeah. Yeah. I did get super emotional at the wedding scene
with the callback to the Amosvedi test theme song. Yeah. That made me feel so. I was like,
there it is. There it is. It's been there. It's very beginning and the bird. Yeah.
I think we did they put it in the beginning. It didn't quite feel the same way because it
didn't get to the point. Okay. Okay. It changed. Yeah. They changed. Yeah. They changed.
Right. Yeah. And it felt sneaky. It felt jazzy. Yeah. All right. So the first one didn't,
I guess I didn't notice the first one. But the one at the end of the movie, I was like,
why do they make us wait the entire? I mean, yeah, it had more impacts, you know, because like,
they made us wait the entire movie to hear that, that, that motif. It's like when you go to the
concert and you're just. So that's exactly. So I liked when Julie was at the bar. She started
to make movies and she's like, well, it's actually just rum and coconut or something like that.
So she says like, it's a peanut colota. It was a peanut colota. I'm in coconut. I'm actually
a peanut colota. And then she said, fuck it. Okay. There's the rating. Yeah. Yeah. The
playfulness that they gave jet. I just, I'm just stuck on the odds. How much more they gave them?
She is so mischievous, which is hilarious because we know that we did a whole jet deep dive
on like the first film. You only got like a little glimpse and then we did get roles of magic
which expanded her, but her story was so tragic.
But I think she's just misunderstood, like I think she's pinned as this goody-goody, but she is not she's getting barred from bingo for cheating
Yeah, and she's getting barred from the library. You know, you're not allowed in here
And we have a whole theory cuz Franny's like my poor Ethan and Jeff's like that was an accident
Thank you. So do we do it? Do we think Jett salad him with Belidana? Oh
Like okay accidentally like poison him to the beginning of which okay? So does Jillian now have like the right dosages because she was kind of just
Don't put the belladonna into Ian's mouth and he was he lived he lived yeah, that's right. So maybe they got their dosages down
He's huge go down his six four is he that's he is yeah, right. So we pace must be like seven-foot tall
What's the biggest surprise do you think there were any big surprises?
I think knowing that they have all this extra information that they may be doing something with
That's a fucking surprise when we didn't even think we would have a number two great and when we've started this podcast
We were like we just love this so much that we have so much to talk about with the first film and the books
So that we just ran with it, but now like we need to get a manager because we're gonna have a lot of information
We gotta talk about so much. I know once we gladly once we see this the second time all bets are off forget it
Sally has been and a mom a mom with a capital M since the 90s, which is crazy
And she just raised us and seeing her do her thing and be awkward mom was cool because I'm like that's my mom right there
Like peeking in the door like okay. It's a big day. Go to bed. But I love you. It was adorable
I love seeing the hallway because we didn't get that angle in the house in the first one
Yeah, with all that paneling. Mm-hmm. So pretty. Yeah, and we don't we don't know where that was leading right well
Why did they change Sally's room around cuz I was like who's room is this but they move the bed
But you were right because the fireplace still gets the same wall the door was on the to the balcony which they didn't they didn't need to
I didn't do anything with I just loved I'm so stuck on the aunts in the house
Yeah, take aways from the film. I love the greenhouse. Yeah, oh, and and we learned the kind of the spell that Nicole was doing with the dance
All I am page was a grief spell for jet and kind of like sending her off to I guess the next realm or wherever
She ends up after she's turned to start us. So it was interesting to see her doing that kind of like death ritual
Yes, because she's got to be a death doula so that like was kind of like parallel with her
I guess real life which was cool to see
So that kind of stuck out to me because I know like when we first did our analysis of the trailer
We're like we wonder what kind of spell she's doing with the dandelion page. We haven't done dandelion
We have well now we got to do that one because I have to do with death and release. Yeah. Well release you blow the and they kind of
Disperse you should work for
Did you have you met me
How we know that was amazing? Well, that's the first thing I could think of yeah, that you know when you release something
Into the ether that you blow those little dandelion things into the air and then they kind of just scatter kind of like how jets
Essence kind of scattered when she passed into that scene right. I want to say my least favorite character was Gideon
Yeah, I was he was like sleeping half the movie. I do love that. So it was so very excited to be included and the wonderful things
He had to say I just didn't feel connected at all. He had was a very short blip. Um, and then Paula Paul
I feel like Paula had more screen time than getting it. It was cool to hear kind of like in passing about like the other family
Because I think that's what Kylie and Antonia were talking about under the covers. Yeah, right like oh, you know like when Paula starts
You know she starts talking about occurs and whatever that's who that was. I like to see that. Yeah. Cool. It's no
I also love the whole awkward exchange between Sally and Gideon. Yeah, at the wake
With the meat platter like
I got the meat. Yeah, that whole that whole thing and then the tongue. Yeah, tongue sandwich
I thought that was an innuendo for something else. Well Sally made it one. Yes. Yes. She didn't leave it up to Sally to make it awkward
So yeah, that whole bit was was kind of funny, but awkward and weird and I think maybe went on a lot of great
They do. Yeah, Sally or Sandra does. Yes. She's really good at the whole awkward thing even in the first film
The thing with the suitcase. Yeah, was cute. I liked it. I was like she goes did it one more time. Yeah, that would have been too much
Overkill. Yeah, yeah, when she said to me when sat or was it oh
Jillian goes out of the house the Magnolies tree house. She's trying and the the suitcases down on the sidewalk
And what did you say to me? I said that's you
Unless you've got shown up to any Magnolies tree episode. That's you guys too. Yeah crimson calamities
She said that is you where you show up to anything and I'm like this who cases click click click click
Yeah, I got two rollies right now. I liked I thought it was funny. That was funny. Yeah, I just liked Jillian's growth
That was cool. Yeah, and I like the book she didn't there was no need for a love interest. Oh, yeah
That's right in the book or getting pregnant. That's right. We didn't have a pregnancy trope. That's right
I'm for it. They didn't make it in Tonya pregnant. It would have been distracting. Yeah, and it's like yes
We will have other generations of oh and zzz
Mail included. Yeah, but it didn't need to be in the film and I'm glad they skipped it
There was a lot that I think would have been too distracting if they included all of those bits for sure
So I see why they did away with a lot of the plot points from the book. Did anybody cry? Yeah the whole time
Yeah, there were tears there were tears. They didn't stream
Yeah, yeah, I think Jets passing got me the most and then the hearing the almost video to set the wedding at the end got me
Franny seeing jet. I think the reflection in the water of franny being of jet being beside franny
Yeah, she walked in they could have continued that reflection and I I would have been a mess
Yeah, I did like how they they depicted leech lake because we never got it in the first movie
We got a lot of the coastal view but we never because I mean we didn't have a leech lake in book one
So I like how they included that bit because that was a huge I know that was so magical
I'm learning who are these kids in the woods with Jillian just showing the magic
Yeah, does she make them forget after all? Well, no because they're not our wins
I know but they is that what keeps perpetuating the myth like are does she not live there because okay
So wait a minute, so she's
So we're getting the sense because she doesn't live there. We're gathering right who's
What is this a throwback to before are these maries? I think kids
Yeah, I know are these into the town kids are they saying which which you're a bitch? No, no, so are they maries?
I don't think it's probably not because that I don't know are they still perpetuating the whole thing or no because they they cut that out at the end of the first
Yeah, everybody's coming to the garden game for their ailments. That's that was a large crowd. Yeah, yeah, yeah
There's no money exchange. That's right. We didn't see any of that but the porch light. I like that. They included that
Yeah, just but we didn't see that that lip that we saw on the trailer of Sally and Bruton embracing
Yeah, it must of
It must have got kind yeah, I like that he was there at the end
But you know she gets her kiss and she's like I'm gonna go dance. I kind of like the whole okay
So you guys I heard you and Jeremy laughing at some point when that happened that something that Julian did
But I don't know what she did because I wasn't focusing on that. I was at the wedding. Yeah, we were laughing at the guy doing
Okay, I saw Julian and I was like what's so funny because while that was happening my brain was still in the previous scene where Sally and
What's this fucking name?
Yeah, and Sally and Ian were kissing my whole thought while that was happening was does he realize he's standing right over the garden that they said they buried the man
Where they told them they buried a man on the train because they tell them they bring it up on the train and then you're kind of just blows over
But now they're in the kitchen right over it. Where
Exactly, I was like oh my god, I was hoping for something where Kylie and Gideon
Like I'm married. Was that Maria's cottage because I was like, where did they get this?
Yeah, they repurpose her
Cool, okay, so it's a little different
That's a wild. Yeah, you're standing right over Jimmy. Yeah, that's cool. Yeah, yeah, so and in the first movie
She throws the ring, right, but like it's puda. It's so puda, so it doesn't it's not gonna burn in the fire
So did you stay in the garden? Yeah, it must have been it says one thing you think magnolia street now needs an entire episode about
I think we just said the dandelion yeah, yeah, yeah, and the the oh, yeah the death delaying the deadline
Yeah, and anything like major like cuz that's that's that's probably gonna be like a magic and lore episode
But like anything major that we probably could really pull apart. I don't know. Yeah, that's so that's our question
Anything that you guys
I do need to see
Yes, character analysis
Like differences. Yes.
- That's gonna be the big one.
- We're gonna finish this off with the rating.
One out of five margaritas.
- Oh.
- So we have wine.
We don't have margaritas tonight.
Okay, wait, are we rating it based on its connection
to the first one or standalone?
- That's hard.
- Stand alone.
- Stand, I guess standalone would be fair, right?
- Because Sandra Bullock did say
that you could watch this on its own.
You don't need to watch the first one.
So I guess if you're going into it with that in mind,
yeah, I guess your overall thoughts on its own.
- No, without the first one.
- Anybody else wanna go first?
- Am I gonna watch it again, absolutely?
- I would probably rate it about maybe a three and a half
out of five.
I mean, was it watchable?
Yes, did I also feel like it dumped a lot down?
Absolutely, but was it also nostalgic?
Yeah, there were lots of callbacks from the first one
if you're a real fan, like there was a lot in there
that I was like, oh my god, they called that.
But some callbacks, like the frying pan
were a little unnecessary, I feel like.
But I did go, oh my god, they're frying pan.
- Yeah, yeah.
But I think I did feel a little forced.
- I don't remember what exactly it was.
Ian said something.
I don't think I've ever rolled my eyes literally,
and I went, I don't know what it was.
It was when he, I think they were at the dinner table talking.
And I just like, oh my god.
That was obnoxious cheese.
It was cheese, yes.
It was cheese, a lot of it was cheese.
- Yeah, whereas the first one I didn't get cheese,
I got sincerity.
- No, the first one was just so much more heartwarming.
I feel like this is gonna seed up a little bit for,
you know, there were so many theatrics.
I feel like they were trying to impress a lot of people,
but then also real new people in.
But then also make the studio happy.
So I don't know, I feel like they were trying to do a lot,
too many things at once.
Everything was segmented so perfectly for Instagram shorts.
Instagram deals, it was all centered, not symmetrically,
but it was very much like you could put it right into
social media very easily.
- I would have to agree with that.
- Yeah, that's my opinion.
- Yeah, so why is it 3.5?
What was your rating?
- I was saying two points.
- Really?
- That's amazing.
- Even as a standalone?
- The amount of times I was like that is so on the nose.
It was just predictable.
I want to love it because of the world it lives in.
I rate it higher, but I think as a film for film standards,
it's pretty low for me.
- Yeah, unfortunately.
- What about the peanut gallery?
- Just the movie itself, a three and a three quarter.
- All right, Mallorca.
- I think because my little continual heart wanted this
for so long, and it did scratch a lot of those itches
on a first watch, and then this might dwindle later,
I'm gonna give it a 3.9.
- No.
- Okay, okay.
- I think based off of what I was expecting,
and I feel like I was pleasantly surprised at it.
- Okay, okay.
- And having, like I think I expect the moments
that they got from the book is what I expected.
- All right.
- And I guess, so I don't know, I guess I'm gonna give it a four.
- Okay, cool.
- I've never had any thoughts.
- A 3.62.
- Wow, that's pretty, that is very specific.
Do you have a reason for that number?
- I have to say a little bit, I mean, I say it's old times.
I get weird about these sequels,
comparing it to anything else, but I have to say a little bit.
- It's hard to ever compare an original film.
- Of course, 90s movie, yeah.
- Yeah, you're gonna get one original film.
You're never, never, never, never.
- Magnolia Street was already two and a half years old.
- They, they couldn't call those.
- We have access to the fans, and I think having them
trying, they might have, we have not.
- We have to focus, focus.
- Okay, yeah, all right, yeah.
I would have to say, if I, if we did compare sequels,
yeah, focus, focus, highly disappointed.
The craft legacy, highly disappointed.
I feel like a lot of it was catered to the up and coming Gen Z,
unfortunately, because like, it's just,
it's such a weird thing for them to do these sequels,
because everybody who was a fan of it before,
like they just disregard all of their fans, you know?
- I think so too.
- And trying to appeal to like a newer generation.
- I think so too.
- It's just like a lot of Pinterest curated witchcraft.
Like I, I'm like, I don't care for that.
- And those are clicking things.
- Yes, millennials.
- Right, yeah.
- It's just hard to ever capture it.
Like, what makes something so special?
It's, I feel like what made this movie the first movie
so special, it took time, it took years to build.
- Right, and I think, no, but I think there are a lot of people.
I think the whole, the whole, it became the whole class.
- Yes.
- And I think it's always so hard to put a finger on
what makes something such, but I do think that a lot,
a lot of Karen thought went into this, into the sequel.
- Yeah.
- And I just never expected it to capture
that same feeling that the first movie was ever,
because no sequel, I don't think any sequel ever captures that.
- Yeah, I agree.
- Unless it's like immediately planned in succession,
like Harry Potter or whatever.
- Right, right, yeah, yeah.
- And then it's like, or Hunger Games.
Then it's like planning exactly the way that it's, you know.
- Yeah.
- But like, Alice was making this up as,
she kind of went along and flipped.
- It's kind of made stuff, she forgot what she did the first time.
- She did, for sure.
Yeah, Michael's eye to different ways.
- Taking all of that into consideration, it was really great.
I think it was very thoughtful, and well executed,
considering it's been 30 years.
- Right.
- Never meant to even have a sequel.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I think I'm just like overall just glad to have more
of that world on screen and more to talk about,
obviously for the podcast sake.
But I'm kind of like, I'm in between.
Like, some things are best kept just like left alone
in the past, and it's just something that we can just keep
going back to for nostalgic purposes.
But then there are people that want to see more of the world's
play out on the screen.
But then you have the people that are disappointed.
So, you can't make everybody happy.
So, I don't think I was disappointed.
I think what Jeremy's, I think it was predictable.
I think it was, I went in fully expecting to see what it's all
in the future.
- Exactly what I thought I was going to see.
Exactly.
- Yep, yep.
- I was like pleasantly surprised because I was nodding.
I think my bar was lower.
- Really?
- Yeah, I thought so.
- Right, yeah. - I'm going to watch the trailer.
- Okay, yeah.
I mean, we have to for podcast purposes.
But like, I mean, I was just exciting just to see the trailer,
you know?
- Okay, let's do it.
- Yeah, Jeremy's super guest.
- Yeah, I thought I had some lovely moments.
I think I initially wanted to say three.
And then I remembered the like superhero magic CGI
trails from their hands.
And I think that that bumped me down to like a 2.5.
- Okay, yeah.
And then also the whole like Sally tornado at the end
when Tom goes, hmm, I'm just like, okay.
- It was a lot.
It was a lot.
- Yeah.
- They could have had a regular old fist fight.
And it would have been, okay.
In my book.
(laughing)
- I agree.
- Yeah, too much, I guess, too much CGI magic.
That's not really the Owens world that we, you know,
love so much from the original.
- Yeah.
- It's okay, but yeah.
So we're going to re-air this.
This is gonna be aired for next Friday's episode.
And then also in next Friday's episode,
we're going to probably sit down and do a little recap
of our event that we did yesterday at Penn Cinema.
- They were great.
- They were so good.

As it's connected to the first one.
- Hi, I'm like, yes, show me more, I want more.
