And welcome back for this ButtoWatch episode. As you know, every week I'm going to give you a list of what to watch in unscripted TV. So you will never fret again about reality shows or documentaries that you can watch throughout the week. And maybe you're somebody who loves scripted TV. I'm telling you, if you like something like succession, you're going to love the McBe family show on Pico. And I have to say, some of these true crime documentaries, I find on threads that people will be looking for things that aired, I don't know, months ago, years ago, that they may have missed. And you can find that on Apple Podcast and on Patreon at patr-en.com/kkc. Okay. Now the first thing I want to tell you about is a reality show. It is called Calabassus Confidential. It's on Netflix and you may have heard me talk about it before. This one is a reality series from Wheelhouse's spokes studios and it features children of celebrities and content creators in their 20s. So the earlier press that has been put out about it, just kind of like the feelers, have likened it to Laguna Beach in the Hills. More like an OG California reality show, like one of those. And Netflix's unscripted head Jeff Gaspin said it's part of this effort to bring some of that magic back. So the list, some of you may be familiar with the names, some of you may not have. Now I have watched a couple episodes of this series already and I will say, I understand what they're saying about them getting the magic back. I think younger people may recognize some of these names. If you are older, you may like to just see some of the parents faces pop up. Okay. So the legacy kids, the nepot babies, if you will. You've got Preston Pippen, which I find fascinating because he actually went to college with my niece. My niece said, I don't think he barely spoke in college. So this is the magic of the entertainment industry folks. If you know somebody, you're hooked up because if somebody came from Wheeling, West Virginia without any connections, it would be impossible to get on a reality show. Nevertheless, Preston Pippen, and I will say I've said before, you got to get Larissa Pippen's children to be on shows. But I was thinking more of like her daughter who has been on TV and the son who's in the NBA. However, Preston, he's been chosen for this specific show. So he's a Sierra Canyon grad. Now a lot of them have gone to high school together. Sierra Canyon is the school. It's a private school right outside of LA and they're really known for their basketball team because a lot of the players on the team are the sons of NBA players. So they've got really good athletics. I don't know, it's good as our high school, my high school, I gotta be asked by that, I mean my daughters. But it's like the place to go if for basketball definitely, it's expensive school. And I believe Mason, Dissick, me go there still. And yeah, like entertainment people, a lot of their children go there. So according to the cast, Bios, he avoids drama. I think he avoids drama because I think he's actually an introvert. He's quite quiet. His nickname, messy, pressy, suggests otherwise. I don't know. I got to go back to what Sydney said. She said, I don't think he ever spoke. I think he's very quiet and introvert. So it'll be interesting to see how he is over a period of time. From what I've seen so far on the show, he seems pretty quiet as well. Jody Woods, she's the English sister of Jordan Woods. So you may remember that was Kylie Jenner's former best friend. So the Woods family moved to Calabas, when Jordan was 13. So Jody grew up in that orbit of all of those celebrities. And of course, having the proximity to the Jenner family and to the Kardashians will be enormously helpful to your potential content creators/ entertainment career. First see Miller is the son of hip-hop mogul master P and the younger brother of rapper Romeo Miller. So that's trippy too, because there's this one scene where he goes and his doctor was dad and you're just like, what? This is so trippy. Another one, rain Michaels daughter of Poison frontman and rock of love star Brett Michaels. You got to watch just to see the moment with Brett Michaels just to like see him on camera and just to remember how girls were like losing their minds for him. And of course, rock of love is one of the great reality shows of all time. So, and if I'm going back in time and remembering, I do believe he has a band-eye on in the scene. All right, she joins the cast as both a model and aspiring sports broadcaster. Although she'd rather stay home than hit LA Nightlife, describes herself as reserved and trust dogs more easily than people, which is interesting because again, she wants to be a model and a sports broadcaster. So I don't know how that's going to work out for you. I do feel like model is loosely used in our culture in the same way that entrepreneur is. Like, you don't have to be specific. You can just kind of generally say that and not really be specific about it. And people are kind of like, okay, got it. Celebrity adjacent cast members, suede Brooks. That's the real name. Influencer has been linked to Drake, the yacht hopping reference. I'm specifically saying previously dated rapper Kit Kuddy started a YouTube channel 12 to speak out against bullying introduced to the Calabasas crew by her bestie Nicole. Then there's Kimora Lewis, Sarah Canyon grad who groups run by celebrities, luxury and parties. She's pursuing music, indeed, Jane, dropped a breakup inspired diss track in college and has embraced a party girl reputation. All adults in the room are going. I don't know how well this is going to work out for you. You got to get a real job. The friend group. So they don't have famous parents, but they're definitely plugged in. You've got Alexi Alevo, a model who graduated from Santa Clara's Levy School of Business where she played D1 volleyball. Childhood Bestie of Emily has been crushing on Preston for years. Describes herself as the low drama vibe curator of the friend group. And somehow always ends up in the drama. It's surprising to me. Somebody would say a low drama person but somehow ends up in the drama. So you're probably the mastermind behind like you're the puppeteer. We Emily Nelson is an influencer with a journalism and fashion media degree from SMU. Long time besties with two other cast members. Emma Modrano is a content creator and social media media. manager for Mercedes Benz. She's got a missedist degree from more Park College recently noticed Gemma blocked her on Instagram. So she's obviously lost her mind. Gemma Durant, LA-based influencer, Oregon, advertising grad marketing coordinator at Kelly and partners. Nicole Sahebbe, Swede's best friend and her bridge to the friend group. You've got Ben. He attended Indiana's Kelly School of Business, works and sales at Ripley and New York City, and is the director of Nagol Jury. Dylan Wolfe has passed with Gemma. And then there's a grown-em-sturling. She moved to Calabassas from a small town outside Anchorage, Alaska to model and quickly befriended Dylan and Hersey. So that is the group. And I have to say, if you are like over 28, you might go, I don't know if I can stay the distance. Like watch all the episodes. If you're under 28, this might be interesting, just to watch. I found it fascinating because I thought, I wanna see what Calabassas looks like. A lot of the episodes are filmed in people's homes. So you do get an idea of what it's like to live there in these big homes. I'm fascinated by culture and who has power, how to access power. And I do think, and I have empathy for young people who are trying to have a career in entertainment or influencing. And it's such a saturated market, how to stand out, how to make a name for yourself. And then on top of it, you have to create social circles in which you feel emotionally safe. That's gotta be hard, really, really hard. And so that's why I found it really interesting to watch. If you're not interested in culture and social structures, this may not be the one for you, but I did think it was interesting. So it's called Calabassas Confidential Netflix Friday, May 29th, it begins. And it's a good show to just kind of stream to, if you just want something in the background. Like a lot of the Netflix shows that I really enjoy in the background or shows like the Parisian Agency, which is about a family. And they also real estate in Paris and you go to these most beautiful properties and apartments. And I like stuff like that in the background. A lot of people like to watch cooking shows in the background. This is definitely like a fun one. And if you are interested in, again, like in Calabassas and what that life must be like, I can't tell you, I don't think it would be much fun. I think you must be under enormous pressure to keep up with the Joneses there. And again, again, it's so, it is like, listen, it's harder to reach, let's be honest. But I just, like I go back to that, like you're right out of school and people expect you to be successful immediately. And it takes so much time to build a career. It takes so much time. And because they live in this environment where their parents are so successful, it's assumed, like you're gonna have all these hookups and you're gonna be making the same amount of money as your parents. It's like wild to me. Now, I know that some influencers do make a lot, but I wish that those influencers exposed all the work that goes behind the scenes because people assume that being an influencer is this super easy job where you just, you know, talk about your outfits and people send you free stuff. And it's just not the reality. So that, again, I don't need to oversell this one, but an interesting one to just pop into. (upbeat music) Then we move on to Love Island, USA. It's on Peacock, new season begins, season eight. Ariana returns as the host. This is our third consecutive season. And the show comes off season seven's record breaking 18 billion streaming minutes. Peacock's most watch original season ever, new episodes will stream daily, except Wednesdays with episodes every day during premiere week. This is like a fun show to watch during the summer. I just spoke with Ann Appeal who wrote a book about Love Island. It's a great book, go out and get it. It's called Enter the Villa. And I think the thing that's great about this show is it kind of reminds me like back in the day of the early days of Big Brother in the summer. If you're just looking for something like consistent throughout the week, especially some other networks that kind of dip out for a little bit, they know how much fascinating content. This is something that you can get hooked into. It does feel a bit like a soap opera where they have this nonsensical same conversations all the time, but it is entertaining if you make the commitment to the show and just catch up each day with the episodes. So a whole new season, I found Teenagers love to watch the show. My daughter last year said that she called it Chopped Island because she didn't think they were that cute. We'll see what this season is like. And again, that is on Peacock. America's Got Talent is Back. I know a lot of little kids love this show. It's on NBC. It's season 21 marks the 20th anniversary of the show, which first premiered in 2006. And that's not surprising to me because I feel like the clips live in infamy on YouTube. Simon Cowell, Sophia Vregara, Howie Mandel, and Mel B are all returning his judges. Terry Cruz, Back is host. Now season 21 introduces a new judges callbacks round, which gives Select Acts a second chance to perform before the judges decide who advances to the live shows, which begin August 18th. So that's coming back. Then Independent Lens, Third Act on PBS, Robert Nakamura was a legendary filmmaker, photographer and activist, often called the Godfather of Asian American Media. He survived incarceration as a boy in an internment camp during World War II. Overcame entrenched racism to become a successful commercial photographer and then turned to filmmaking to document the Japanese American experience in works. And as Parkinson's disease and political unrest reopened, Buried trauma, this specific film captures an intimate reckoning between Father and Son using film to say what words could never do. It was an official selection of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. And in honor of AAP, I think this is like a great thing. So Independent Lens, Third Act, make sure that you check that out. We've got the Summer House Season 10 reunion, back on Bravo. Three part reunion begins to air on May 26th with uncensored version streaming the next day on Peacock, where you can hear them drop a ton of F-bombs. Now of course, the drama will be central in terms of love triangle, Amanda and Kyle and West and Sierra situation. So we're gonna unravel that. Here's what I hope. That they don't drag this out to the point where I just can't take it anymore. I hope that the meat on the bone in the first episode that I can't make any promises. So this is the one that reality show moment that you wanna watch this week. I know everybody's gonna be like appointment TV. I need to see how close they are sitting on the couch. Didn't look it look like it in the clips that I saw. She's wearing this weird yellow dress gown situation. And they're not touchy feeling on the couch from what I've seen, which is like a yikeser moment, if you will. I mean, this guy's probably looking for the exit signs. Like what did I get into this mask? Like a good lord. That's the one to watch for short in terms of reality shows. So Tuesday, APM, Eastern Pacific, Summer House, season 10, reunion. American Experience C-Biscuit on PBS. It's an actual re-airing of the 2003 PBS documentary which is directed by Stephen Ives. It tells the story of the Depression Error Resource and the team behind him. Well, the owner Charles Howard, Tastron Trainer Tom Smith and the Jockeys. Just a fun go back in time, especially since I just saw those great clips from the Kentucky Derby kind of get you back into that mindset. So they're going to re-air it. American Experience C-Biscuit PBS May 26. Okay, two more kind of war things. I just want to put in front of you. Frontline, the war cabinet is on May 26. It examines the key players behind expansive use of the US military from clashes with allies to taking out foreign leaders to waging war in the Middle East. So it looks at the inner circle of advisors and officials trying to protect US power. And then World War II with Tom Hanks. This is a 20 episode docu-series narrated and executive produced by Tom Hanks and episode streaming the following day on the history channel app and history.com. Perfect for the person in your life who can't get enough of like band of brothers, war movies, et cetera. The premiere featured three episodes of Memorial Day and then the series airs globally across 200 territories in 40 languages. Traces the war's full arc from the rise of fascism in Europe to the atomic age and the uneasy aftermath that turned wartime alleys into Cold War adversaries. Tom Hanks has said that the war's a fact on his own family made the project deeply personal. He said during my formative years, every single adult in my life would make reference to two words, the war. And I'm going to say, And as you know, he's done a prefore with saving private Ryan, being a brother's, the Pacific, Greyhound, and Masters of the Air. And this is his first documentary treatment. And then this brings me to the one thing, docu-series that I really want you to watch this week. As you know, I covered this on Friday, past Friday. It's called "The Many Lives of Benjamin Kyle." This is on "Ambestigation Discovery," May 25th and the 26th. It is a two-night documentary from Hot Snakes Media. There are the company behind the curious case of Natalia Grace. This story traces back to August 31, 2004, when this man who was naked and injured was found unconscious behind a Burger King in Richmond Hill, Georgia. So he claimed Amnesia and went by the name Benjamin Kyle. And in late 2015 forensic genealogist, C.C. Moore, identified him as William Burgess Powell, born in Lafayette, Indiana in 1948. The filmmakers Shannon and Eric Evangelista began filming him in 2014. Now, what started as a mission to help him recover is identity turned much darker. And they describe uncovering three unsolved cold cases and a possible connection to a very powerful Midwestern cry family. The episodes also stream on HBO Max the same day. And my god, this is a one-to-watch. It is, it's a head scratcher. We are very confident that when you listen and you go and you look at the photos, that somebody's got an answer, especially if you live in the Midwest. If you have lived in Colorado and Indiana, perhaps Texas, anywhere in the middle of the country, there is a 28-year gap of information. And they need to know where this man has been. And he's super cagey, as you will see in the documentary series. I need you to go to my Instagram or my TikTok and look at the photo of that man. And I want you to share the slide. It has several different pictures of him so that you can share it with the people in your life. We know that he's been a short, short order cook. So, may have worked in restaurants.
