In episode 16 of "One Be A Brave," host Danielle Good welcomes viewers with energy despite her body not being at full capacity due to her disability. She sets house rules: no profanity, no bashing of any group, and a focus on Jesus Christ. The show represents the one million people worldwide with disabilities or medical conditions, and Danielle emphasizes the importance of representing all awareness ribbons, with August being National Wellness Month.
Danielle shares a story about a delivery driver who, upon seeing her walker, switched from casual conversation to an unsolicited encouragement about finding joy in her circumstances. She criticizes this assumption that people with disabilities are in despair or need fixing, stressing that intentions can be misguided and that people with disabilities often accomplish more than expected. She advises others to "read the room" and not assume limitations define a person's life.
Guest Dara then shares her journey: born with hip issues and a left foot that turns inward, she endured severe pain, multiple back surgeries from L1 to S3, fusions, and height loss. Despite being told she couldn't have children, she had twins. Dara discusses her spiritual struggles, recounting a moment when God told her to focus on the present, saying, "I didn't ask you to do it for 20 years, I ask you to do it right now." She emphasizes going deeper in faith and that Jesus is enough for each day. She authored a 30-day devotional, "Dancing in the Pain," offering tools for finding joy and grace. The conversation concludes that suffering is part of life, but God provides comfort and strength, and believers can be testimonies to others through trials.
[Music] Hey y'all! Hi, how are you doing? Y'all good? Y'all straight? Y'all straight? Y'all good? Let me give you this disclaimer right now. My body, it's not doing its thing. That's just living with the disability. You just have those days. If I'm not at a 14, bear with me because my body is not at its full potential. Now, let's get on with the show. Hi, I'm Danielle Good. Y'all straight? Y'all straight? Y'all good? Welcome to another episode of One Be A Brave. We are on episode 16. My God. That's great to me. Can't you see? Bars. I'm so grateful that you guys are here. Thank y'all for tuning in. Thank y'all for watching. Thank y'all for seeing. Like, grow a channel out today. Okay? And that's a period. So let's get into the house rules. No profanity. We don't. Come on now. We don't do that on the show. At all. It's only worse in dictionary. We about to use all the suckers. You know what I mean? We don't. We're not about to use all that. No. Also, no bashing of race, religion, gender, politics or sexual premises. Why? Because from One But He made all the nation. So what does that mean? Don't want me to go to your ass. All y'all are family. Cousin them, Uncle them, Untie them, Sister them, Grandma them, Grandpa them. And this is all y'all about it to the barbecue. Who won't check for me? Tell them I sent you. Exactly. And my God. I gotta do the head. Wait, I gotta say that one game. Exactly. And how am I gonna check for me? Also, this show is called One Million Brain because it represents the one million people of the world that have a disability and/or medical condition. Oh, heads. You already know what I'm about to say. New comments catch on quick. Get your one of us in your circle. Get. Because I don't know if y'all know, but Johnny the catch on quick. We are top tier. Our community boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. And then I feel my energy coming. Thank you. Thank you, Lord. And it's, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. And then my guest tonight, she just, she raised the bar even higher. And it's just great. Like almost it is tiring. How dope we are. Like it's who, how much, how much more top can we get? We're already at the top of the other tier. Then how much more? It's exhausting. God, Lee. No autographs, please. I just want to go to Walmart in peace. No autographs. My God. Awesome. This is this is very important. Okay. One of the most important rules on this show. I don't, I don't know what's over there. Over them over there. Then going to do it. We go over here. JC the way to be. We talk about Jesus Christ. I don't. That ain't gonna over here. Jesus Christ is always going to be better than white rice bars. JC is the way to be bars. He always going to be number one. He's always going to be number one. He's just being, he's been too good. But bang on the new me. What? Okay. We're back to I feel like you're just trying to just just get a little taste. I promise you you will not regret it. Okay. Also. This show it. Wait, what did I say? What's my last child? This body? Cause it's missing my mind, too. Lord Jesus keep my mind. Keep, keep my. Cause the mind is a terrible thing to waste. So this show is a. Oh, okay. I'm thank you. Thank you for reminding me. This show is one of the very few shows that has a hostess with the disability that interviews guests with disabilities and our medical conditions. Oh, heads. I know you're ready. Newcomers catch on quick. Radio. Tyler Perry. Mother every dover night and we got one more doctor. I'm going to be Carter. I'll come to the front. Please. Mom, mom, mom, mom, four seats right for you. Lady. Oh, it's hot. So we must be in your garden. Okay. Shop it up. Thank you for your time. T no crimp is please. I don't know what's in there. Cause I'm allergic to it. Could be. We don't know, but just be on the safe side. And then after things for your time, Tyler Perry. Me waking up. You have a 92 port series show just on just just me waking up in the morning. There you go. You ain't never going to run out of things to write about. Okay. Love you. Then it's going to be trying to get out of lockdown and Rockefeller. I'm in chair one mother do vanishing chair to we chopping it up. I'm going to the dryer. She is a dryer. We talking. Appreciate it. Love you. Love your hair. Looks dope. This is going to be time to go to church. After we do pray in the worship. Me and Dr. Holly Carter. We're going to be an investor. Be all. Chopping it up. It makes sense in my head. Like in my head. It makes sense. All four scenarios. So when it happens, they can not strange. Hi grandma. Love you. When it happens just I'm saying because you heard it here live. And in living color. They can not strange. All right. So. But that being said, let's move on part two. Is it a part two? I don't know. Well, we just like to vote. All right. So on this show, we like to represent all the awareness ribbons of the world. We love breast cancer. But that is not the only awareness ribbon pink is beautiful. But that is not the only awareness ribbon that we need to represent. So on here, we're going to have. Girl, you got to say because you didn't even you was trying to flow with it and it didn't even flow. We're going to try to send it again and say it right on this show. We have a segment called ribbon representation. Okay. Now, gave. Could you please tell us who the ribbon representation of this month is. Please. Okay, that was a cue. Like I said, I think you were supposed to be a bone. I'm taking 15 cents off. Okay, where's that? Thank you. August is national wellness month. You know what? That's good. Actually. That's a whole month. National wellness and wellnessness. That's the word. Yes, it is. Wellness is it's very important because you got to you got to live right. And not just not just spiritually, but physically too. And it's a whole it's a whole trying and composing thing. We love that. August is the national wellness month. I almost slip up and I said it right. Girl, you don't want to do that. Why you represent people you saying the wrong. My God. I don't make no sense. Well, that means it. Um, okay. So here's thing. I let's talk about let's talk about two two subjects that need to be addressed. You really doesn't need to be. But it's a story time to let's talk about assumptions and intention. Shall we? All right. Story time. So. I was in my dad's house and I had ordered something. So I was getting in from the door. Now the gentleman that was delivering my item. He didn't know that I was at the door. Right. So he came and when he came, he saw me. So as he's approaching. Just casual conversation. Hey, all right. Let me see you. Okay. Cool. Now now. Now he's at the actual door where I am. Then he sees my walkers. So then the the subject changes. Now he wants to give me a whole. Um, I don't even. Is it encouraging? I'm not sure. But he wants to give me this whole. Um, this whole talk. Ted talk, if you will, about how I need to find joy in the circumstances. Hi, I'm Jackie. Love you. I need to find joy in the circumstance and God is with you.
with me no matter what and I need to stay strong, keep fighting. And I mean, just just went in. Now, here's the thing. We love a good, encouraging word. If that was your initial intention, because you saw me from afar, and that wasn't your original approach. But as soon as you saw my walker, then you felt the need to change your conversation, that I need to make sure that I find joy in my circumstances. Now, I don't know if you know me or not, but I don't think I need any more joy than what I have. I mean, the joy, the joy is at its top. And then also the assumption that I am distressed, down, sad, mopey, all the things, just because you saw that I have a walker. That was another assumption, because the intention wasn't that, if you would have led with that, because you're not a job of witness. You're a delivery driver. That's just it. So you didn't come to me with the intention of delivering a positive message just on GP. You decided to switch your occupation because you saw my walker. And you thought that I didn't have a life. You thought that my life was in distress or despair, because you saw my walker. And then I had something similar to this one. Fully dressed. The last thing I need is an encouraging word of joy. That's the last thing, because I have so much joy that I can give to me honest. So I said that say this. For those ones that feel like when they see people with disabilities and medical conditions, and you feel the need to encourage them, please read the room. Because sometimes their lives are so far advanced than what you think. To be honest, we can do so much. And we have done so much with our disabilities, than what we have without a disability or medical condition. So don't assume that our life is in despair just because you see a medical accessory or you see some type of physical limitation on them. Because we don't want to hurt your feelings when we don't accept your encouraging word. What is that called? We're untruth. But it doesn't matter. Don't assume because you see a physical limitation from your from your natural eye that we automatically need to be healed or fixed or or addressed in a certain way to where God is like forgotten about us. But don't give up. What? That was nothing. He said don't give up hope because God is still. He sure is. And matter of fact, do you got time? Because I can tell you, I can give you a whole scenario or two or three. Hey, mom, love you. I can give you a whole two or three nine, 12 scenarios of how good God has been with this water. And I probably say now come a laser. Okay. So that's in that that that that we get that a lot. And not all the time the intention is pure. It switches to trying to fix us and trying to heal us from your perspective because you see a limitation physically. But that's not always the case. Okay. Because I've accomplished a lot, a lot with this storm in my side. Then I have without it. Okay. Child. Help me help you help me help you. And we're going to help. My God. All right. That's my spoon. I'm saying to it. So my next yes, I am super dooper. Cut drooper. Is that a word? It doesn't matter. It's my dream. I worry. Excited that she is going to be grace in the stage. As you guys know, I never know anything about my guests ahead of time. And this has not changed the case has not changed. And so I'm very, very, very excited. And I'm very interested in hearing her journey and hearing her accomplishments. And I'm just excited that she is willing to I never take anyone that wants to be on the show for granted. Like I never do I appreciated because I learned a lot too. Although I do have a disability, I still learn a lot from all my guests. I take something from what they said. And I apply to my life. That's where the joy comes. Come on. So it just be spilling. I'm saving years in the joy just be boom, boom, boom, boom. Okay. It's not about me. Girl, stay focused. Stay focused. I want you to do. All right. Gratitude stage. Dara, please come to the stage. I'm super, super, super excited. Hey girl. Hi, Dama. Thank you for having me. Thank you again so, so much for Gratitude stage. I really do appreciate it. Thank you for your words. The joy of the Lord is our strength. And it. Thank you. Come on. That's what I'm talking about. I love it. I love it. All right. So let's get into it. Can you tell us where you're from and the name of your disability and medical condition? I am from all over the place. I grew up in Illinois. Married in Texas. We've lived in five or six different states. Right now we're living in Ohio. I have a lot of people who are in the hospital. I just kept going. I just kept going. I had two big sisters to keep up with. I figured out how to walk. I was told later, much later, that I don't use the right muscles to walk with. I was told to severe pain in my legs when I was younger and my upper body because I was using every other muscle to compensate. Right. My grandparents said that I was lazy because I dragged my leg. So there was never any help. Really. I would do what I wanted to do and then I would pay the price, which was paying. I marched in the band in high school. I played softball. I ran and I'd be home just crying in the evenings because my legs are hurt so badly. When I was 19, my parents finally decided, okay, let's get her to an orthopedic surgeon. So went to an orthopedic surgeon and he's like, okay, yeah, something's going on. He did exploratory surgery. They ended up taking part of my hip bone out and then a bilateral few.
I married had three adorable babies. I was told I'd never be able to have children. And then God blessed me with twins that were very large. I'm 9, 7, 10 and the fusion broke. So when they were just about a year old, they went back in with sacral claws, rods, screws, and then they've had to go out several times. So from L2 in my back, no L1, L1 in my back all the way down to S3. And then I got to the end of the first one. And then I've also been to the back. So when you say you've been in, you've had infusions. What does that help? How does that help? So it's called the zipper effect. So once they stabilize that L5S1, that disc above it and below that it levels begin to disintegrate. So the discs are in the back. So the discs begin to tear away and break away because of the extra pressure on it, because it doesn't have the one below it. So in the 80s, they would take out those discs and then just put the bone to bone and fuse them. By the 90s, they were putting in cages where the disc used to be. So they could take it out and then put in a cage and then put it together. And then I got two inches on my second surgery because they took out those discs and didn't put anything in. They just went bone to bone. So you lost two inches in height. Two inches in height. So my rib cage tips almost touch each other. Wow. Man. So with your hips, because you said you said two different things. One was your bag. And then also your your feet, right? And then your left foot turns in. And I've just had to work really, really hard to make it behave itself. I can't go up on high heels or anything like that. Yeah, yeah. So when it comes down to their feet and the the care that you use, do you have specific type of shoes or braces or anything that you were to help? I did not at this time. I have been on a walker. I have been in a wheelchair. I had a lot of experience with my body. using the right muscles that allowed the other muscles to finally relax and become more flexible? Yeah, because you're using majority of my new muscle, so you need it to relax, so all of them can work together. Exactly. That definitely makes sense. It's hard sometimes. One, I'm glad that you didn't give up, because sometimes it's very difficult when nothing is working and you feel like you've tried everything. Sometimes you don't want to try again, because it's like, well, this may not work either, but I'm glad that you were able to find something that actually works. Yes. So, two great stories. Do you have a minute? Yes, ma'am. The first one would be, what do you do when Jesus is the answer and you have Jesus and it's not enough? With physical disabilities, we get there. Yes. We panic. We feel caged. We can't get away from the pain. We get desperate and Jesus, why aren't you healing me? And a friend of mine said, then you go deeper in. Jesus was in the garden of guess something and he took his disciples in. He took his three best friends deeper in, but finally he had to go himself deeper into that relationship with God to where he shed. Sweat drops of blood for our say. Yeah. You know, I was a Christian. I was falling word by husband's been in the ministry of our married life. I love Jesus. I've read his word. I've been through counseling because of my abusive past and the neglect. And I knew Jesus. I knew the word, but I was still struggling and I had to go deeper in with him. I had to cling to him with everything I had. In 2008, I had two major back surgeries, one in March and one in October. And I had been on two kinds of morphine and three kinds of coding for so long before that before I could finally get somebody to do something about it. And I was in a lot of pain and I was laying in bed one day. I said, God, I can't do this anymore. I can't do this for 20 more years. I can't do this for five more months or two more months or another week, another day. And that's still small voice God spoke to me said I didn't ask you to. I ask you to do it right now and I'm right here with you. Wow. That was the day Jesus became not just Lord of my past, Lord of my present, but of my future, my future. That's so good. And we both to let it go and not worry about the future. Jesus is enough right here right now today. And living in that way of the Lord. That's so good. That's so good because he hasn't left. He just hasn't and I always say this a lot of time because we do sometimes we're just like God, where, where are you? Like why am I still like why is this going to hear one grace is sufficient to my mindset had to change like, okay, you're going through all this stuff, but you're still alive. Right. So obviously God has not left you because as as as as Tremot was as the situation is the wherever position that you are in, you're still able to get through it because you're still here. Exactly. God got somewhere around here. Yeah. And what they really said. So good. Thinking upside down was when I understood that God, Jesus said you'll hit in this world. You have tribulations. Yes. But you in it. We've got to understand this world. The God of this world is Satan. He's the Prince of the air. He has been on the page. And when a demon demonic being Satan himself is the God, there's going to be death and devastation, depression, disease. That we live in a garbage pit. And when you get garbage, you get garbage on you. Right. But Jesus reached down came down into that garbage pit with us and walked through it with us and promises one day to take us out of it. And that's so good. Because if we think, well, you know, why isn't God healing me? You know, God, God says that he, you know, he loves me. Then why is he letting me allowing me to do this? It works part of being human. Yeah. Yeah. That's definitely the human side. And then also a lot of times we are someone else's testimony. Meaning God, God has to, God has to put you through something because you're helping someone else. You're literally a physical representation of who God is through trial and tribulation literally. And that's what helps them. They got to see it. Yeah. At first, never about you. First Corinthians says that he comforts us that we might then turn and comfort others. Come on. Yeah. Oh my gosh. I love this conversation. I'm going to share with you a book I've written. It's called Dancing in the Pain. Wow. That's my son on the cover there. It's a 30 day devotional finding joy and grace in the midst of struggle. Right. Some of these things are in there that just gives encouragement, gives tools. Yeah. Tools. How do I. How practical on the ground? How do I get through today? Yeah. No, exactly. That's that's very true. That's so that's so good. And also a reminder that God tells us one of the fruit of spirit is long suffering. Right. That he laid that out from jump. That's right. It's going to be lengthy. Suffering going to be lengthy. He let it. You know ahead of time, but he also let you know that he'll never leave you no forsake you as well. That's good. Yeah. And it's a journey. We don't get there from taking the first step and arriving. It's just going down those yellow brick roads, not only physically, but also spiritually. It's being in the word in the word in the word knowing who God is so much. Often we take either our biological or adoptive father and we say, okay, that's how God is. And whether he was perfect or really bad, God is so much more and so much different. In the word to know who this God is. Yes. And I'm glad that you brought that up because that's so much confirmation. I made a post this morning saying that it took God seven days to say it is finished. But each day he still said it was good. Yes. And that journey and that journey. Don't chase for the finished. Remember that every single day is still good. There's still some good in that day. Before you even get to the end. And result is still some good. That's right. That is so. Listen. Amen. I like you. I like you. I like you. I love that. But I definitely do since we're in that since we're in that vein. I do see that you're the executive director of a body and truth ministry. Could you please share with us what that is? And just in detail, we just want to know like what how how that can help us. It is a 501 C3. So we're a nonprofit organization. It's mentoring, teaching and training. At home school, my voice, so some of it is in the home school realm. Other than that also do women's ministry conferences, conventions. I speak at small groups, teas. And then I do one-on-one mentoring with young girls. I've worked with several girls who come through pretty abusive situations. I've written several books. The proverbs for the older student is for high school students at 17, 18-year-old getting ready to launch in the life that covers everything from finances to suffering to the words of our mouth, nutrition, out of proverbs. And then I have a proverbs study for our nine to 13-year-olds. And that one is activities, crossword puzzles, word finds, an obstacle course, an interactive fun. And then a woman's Bible study living beautifully and living gracefully. And those are either on my website or on Amazon. That's beautiful. You have all the ages because the youth and the kids, they're not sponge season. So if you're guiding them in what direction to go, then they won't, they won't ever, they may stray but they won't come on back. And for women too, you know, a lot of times us women, not even a lot of times, us women, we bear a lot. We have to, we have to juggle a lot. So I think that's beautiful that you have books and you have things to help us stay focused, but despite all the chaos. So I love that, love that so, so much. Even though the proverbs we do bring in the whole council of God's Word and Jesus is wisdom, what is the personification of wisdom? He is. Truth is the character of God. So. Say that again for the people in the back. I mean, you're just dropping nuggets after. Boom, boom, boom. That is, I love it. I love it so, so much, so, so much. So I definitely want to ask you two questions. I asked, I'm not guess this. One, what is the most difficult part about?
living with your condition. The days when it's bad, just like, I'll be going along thinking, okay, I'm doing pretty good and then I will get slammed and the pain will be intense. I don't know how long it'll take, maybe a week, maybe a month. And it also, with the spine of bifida, I have interstitial cystitis and that can also be very painful and very limiting. It's a bladder disease that a lot of people have spined a bifida have. So yeah, I would just say, never know when it's going to hit or when you're going to have a good day or when you're going to have a bad day. And people don't understand that, oh, you're doing better. And I think I'm having a good morning. Thank you. Thank you. I'm having a good four hours. Yes, I'm not going to get better, but I'm not hurting too badly, but you know, that's so good. Oh my gosh, that is so good because people do not understand when you're having a good few hours, that your hours will suddenly, you're better. It's not, I'm having, I'm literally having a few hours. That, that hour too, could shift in a blink of an eye. Right. Yeah. And you will just have to, you have to deal with that until until that wave comes. Oh, that's good. That's good. An adequate because you can't ever commit to anything because you take a Sunday school class or doing, you know, those things you want to do regularly because you just don't know. We just don't. Yeah. That's that's really hard. Yes, that is so true. It's so hard because you can't gauge how your days are going to come. You literally have to wake up and see how your body is. Like that's literally what it is. I or even good. Good. Good morning and all of a sudden you'll crash. Yes. Like because that I'm sorry. That's me today. Like literally. My body is like you got a few hours. So take, take it in because your body about to crash. Yes. That's definitely me today. Okay. So on the flip side, I want to ask what is the most rewarding part about living with your medical condition? It's made me have to seek Jesus deeper. It's made me have that relationship to lean on him. When I can't lean on my own strength, my own abilities. Yeah. I'm a performer. I learned early that if I was good, it behaves myself and did good things. I wouldn't get the abuse. I would get whatever love looked like in our home. And so not being able to perform or whatever is hard. So yeah. But rest learning to rest in Jesus and be okay with that. Be content. Yeah. Not a time. I'm out of this bed. That's okay because you know every day of my life, every hour of my life and you were saying that this hour I'm here. And so I guess this hour to you, this day to you. That's good. That's definitely that's definitely good. It's definitely a mindset. It's not a position. It's a mindset. Continent is a mindset. I also put that in my post. How did you know? I literally said that. It's not a position. That's so good. Yes. I love that. Thank you for sharing that. So so much. I want to thank you again for sharing your journey. I want to thank you again for bringing so much nuggets that you have just hit in so much confirmation even in that that that's really dope. And I love your mindset on how you choose to live. And also your community around you is very important too. So we appreciate the boys. We appreciate your husband. We appreciate them all. That's right. That's right. Thank you. Today I appreciate it. Yes. Yes. Very true. Okay. So one, I want to ask where can people find you? Where can people look up? What are you doing? All your books and where can they find you? Okay. So if you go to abidingtruth ministry.com, it's a website and you'll see me speaking on there and you can go to our store. You'll see our books, explanations and you can buy it there. You can buy the books on Amazon. I'm also on Facebook in dancing in the pain and abidingtruth ministry. Yes. Gabe, could you put that on the screen please? Because I would like everyone, who is anyone, everybody who is a body to follow her because she has some great and I open to come and speak at churches or small groups or whatever different conventions. So they can should be able to on the website sign up for that. Okay. Perfect. Perfect. Thank you. Thank you, Gabe. So much. Please follow Ms. Dera at www.abidingtruthministries.com. That is where everything that she does ends up in engagement. All the books, I mean, everything. Please follow her. Please support her. Her story is amazing and what she's doing for the kingdom. My God. We know for the kingdom is amazing. I do have a YouTube channel too. It's abidingtruth colandera and I've taught some of my books. Oh, that's part come on. We love that too. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you. Again, everyone, please follow Ms. Dera. We appreciate her. We appreciate what she's doing and please don't stop. Please don't stop. Thank you again. So so much for grace and the stage. I appreciate it so much. But before you go, we got it before you go question. Okay. For Gabe. Well, I'm nervous. Okay. What's the before you go question? Please tell us. Would you rather get one dollar every time you come every time you compliment a stranger or a hundred dollars every time you insult a stranger? Oh, I'm an encourager. Thank you. So that's one of the things I would take a dollar and get to it. We just going to take it. Yeah. Yeah. Because favor overcomes that dollar. That's right. Yeah. We're going to take that dollar because we like complimenting. We like we like speaking like we speak life. We speak like over here. Yep. Encourage. Yes. Encourage me all day, every day. If I mean, thank you again. Ms. Dera. So so much for grace and stage. I appreciate it. Dave's going to put you in the back. Please don't walk off though. Thank you. Well, thank you. Appreciate it.
