In the Bonus Content Podcast, Rachel, a volunteer at Heartland, shares her journey of encountering Jesus after a life without Him. She describes experiencing supernatural phenomena after her grandmother's passing, leading her to explore the Bible and encounter testimonies that planted seeds of faith. Rachel's intellectual exploration, including reading books on science and faith, helped align her heart with her intellect. Her decision to get baptized marked a moment of surrender and public declaration of her inward change. This step allowed Rachel to overcome misconceptions about Christianity and find a sense of belonging and redemption. The transformative impact of surrendering to Jesus has brought fulfillment, a sense of connection, and a deeper relationship with God in Rachel's life.

- From the halls of Heartland in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin,
welcome to the Bonus Content Podcast.
- Well, hello everyone.
Welcome back to the Heartland Bonus Content Podcast.
We're excited to be back.
- I love doing this.
- Yes, I'm glad you're here.
I'm glad it isn't just me. - Oh, thanks.
- My co-hosts are far in-few between.
But we're excited to be back.
Last week we got to hear from Chris Hansen.
If you have not listened to the episode,
you should definitely go back and listen to it.
Loved hearing his story
and kind of all that God is doing in his life.
But this week we have a very special guest.
She is a volunteer on the band.
So you've for sure seen her on this stage.
Her name is Rachel and we are so excited to have you.
- Hi, I'm so excited to be here.
- Thanks for coming today in the snow.
- I know, it's a bummer of a weather day.
I was like, I really should have left for spring break.
A bit better than this.
But Rachel, tell us just a little bit about you.
How long you've been at Heartland?
Yeah, a little bit about your home dynamics.
Just would love to hear a little bit more about you.
- Yeah, for sure.
So I am a registered nurse.
I work in dialysis at UW hospital.
I have a little four-year-old boy.
He may have seen him running around.
Danger, he has a crazy mullet
and he's always running. - He has the best hair.
- Yes, full speed from the kids area to get a muffin.
That's the highlight of his week.
I'm married and my husband, Sean,
he comes with us every other weekend to Heartland
because he has to work.
And let's see, I'm originally from Canada,
moved to Madison in 2013.
So I've been in the US for, you know, that's like what?
I can't do math, 10 years, 11 years.
- 11 years.
- Yeah, so it's pretty crazy.
- That's awesome.
- But yeah, I've been coming to Heartland
since it's actually Easter of last year.
- Very cool.
- So I'm coming up on my anniversary.
- That's pretty cool.
- That's awesome.
- That's awesome.
- That's really awesome.
- All right, so we are going to just go back a little bit.
And I know that we got to hear your story
because we got to hear your baptism testimony,
which is just super cool.
But we kind of tell our listeners
a little bit of your story.
So our first question is just,
what was your life like before you encountered Jesus?
So what were the things maybe you were searching for,
things you were struggling with,
kind of as you look back and recognize,
man, before I had this encounter,
like true encounter, transformational encounter in Jesus,
what did your life look like?
- Yeah, I mean, because a lot of my life was without Jesus.
Like it literally, it's crazy to think of,
I'm turning 40 at the end of April,
and I just got on this journey like a year and a half ago.
So that's a long time.
And it's crazy to think about how I used to feel
versus how I feel now.
And I guess I was always seeking, from the very beginning,
I remember just being really interested in spirituality,
in different religions.
Grew up in a house, not religious at all,
but my parents kind of dabbled.
They went to Unitarian Universalist Church here and there,
but it was very sporadic.
And it was always kind of confusing to me
because it was like, do you guys believe in this,
or do you not?
But they were very open-minded
and our house was full of textbooks and spiritual books
and art from all over the world.
And so I feel like I had a really broad worldview.
However, they never talked about Christianity
or the Bible or Jesus or anything like that.
That was like this totally unknown thing.
So I guess as, through my teenage years,
again, no church, no, I didn't have that education.
And I really struggled with addictions in my 20s
into my 30s.
And it started off innocent, like for most of us,
I think that dabble and then it just became this thing
where it was like, now I'm in my 30s
and I'm still like drinking all the time.
And it's like, and a lot of people I knew it was the same
thing.
And I just remember feeling like I've got to create more
for myself.
Like I know I'm meant for more than this.
And just working sort of, you know, I worked in retail,
I was a server, I was a bartender,
just never could commit to like a university program.
I was just sort of all over the place, I would say.
And I think like, you know, drinking heavily
and being in that party scene, I was in like the music scene
as like a groupie essentially, like I would go to shows.
My husband played in a band.
Like, so that culture is all about drinking, right?
And so I thought that was my scene.
I thought that was my, you know, my place.
But yet there was this nagging feeling.
It just, there's got to be something more.
And eventually I stopped drinking.
So I have about, it's like five years at this point,
five and a half years, but there was still,
like even without that, 'cause I thought once I get sober,
everything's gonna be great.
You know, like that's the only thing I have
to sort of conquer and, you know, acquiring things, right?
Acquiring like a car and then we bought a house
and I'm sitting there in my house thinking,
I have everything I always thought I wanted.
Like I have a brand new car, I have a family.
You know, we have two dogs.
Like I was in school for nursing.
I've achieved so many things
and there was still that kind of emptiness a little bit.
And so it's a very long story of how I,
I, you know, I could talk about my background for forever.
So I'll kind of like wrap it up,
but basically I just was seeking and feeling anxiety
and feeling like anchorless, I would say, you know?
And according to like what I had done,
it seemed like I should be feeling good at this point, right?
You know, like especially going back to school for nursing
and I had done some other things in school too along the way,
but it just, I was seeking in career and in the world
to give me that fulfillment, so.
- So interesting.
So tell us about that journey.
So it sounds like it wasn't just a kind of a light switch
for you, it was kind of, it felt like maybe years
of figuring out what that journey looked like for you
before maybe that true encounter with Jesus.
So what did that, what did that journey look like for you?
- Yeah, so I was very close with my grandmother.
She was basically like a second mom to me.
And we always talked about, you know, like once she passed
away, if there was a way for her to communicate with me
that she would and she was, you know, passing away.
She was dying and I had a few really weird situations
where I felt like my grandpa was like present.
Like he was kind of signaling to me just in like, you know,
lights going on and off and things like that.
Like it's okay, I'm here to kind of take her sort of thing.
And so that was start of the beginning
of this really weird, I'd never had any like experiences
like that was supernatural sort of things.
And then she did pass and it was months later
and there was more things that happened
that really made me feel like my grandma was with me.
Like an example I could give was there was a photo of her
that I had on my fridge with a really strong magnet
and it would always be on the floor,
this picture of her when I walked into the kitchen
and I would put it back and put the magnet
and just be like, why does that keep doing that?
It happened over and over again.
One time I went outside and I picked up one of my kids'
toys and the magnet fell out of my hoodie
and I went back in and the photo was on the floor.
And there was all these things that happened like that
that I would say it kind of opened me up
to kind of the unseen is what I would say.
And it was sort of what followed was this feeling of like,
I wanna read the Bible.
And my grandma, she was Lutheran.
She never really talked about it too much
but she always believed.
And I felt like it was my grandma that was kind of like
leading me to this wanting to know more about something
that I'd never looked into before.
I never had an inkling to read the Bible ever in my life.
And it was like, why all of a sudden am I feeling like this?
And at first I was a little bit nervous about it.
It was kind of scary.
It's like, I don't know and I kind of fought it.
But then eventually I was like,
I guess I'm gonna download the Bible app
because I just kind of wanna go with this feeling.
And so I started reading the Bible and it was like a secret.
Like I would like be in my bed like reading the Bible app
and my husband sleeping over there.
And I was like, I can't tell anyone about this.
Like it felt like I had this weird secret.
And I had all of these, I had some encounters.
People that literally, I think literally were put in my path
to plant seeds.
I had these two encounters with patients actually,
dialysis patients in the hospital
where they shared their testimony with me.
And it, for some reason, it really impacted me.
And people have shared their stories with me before
but it was never a testimony story.
So it was a series of events that kept happening
where it was like, I feel like I'm being pulled
in this direction.
And I think it was my grandma and those first
sort of spiritual encounters that like I said,
it opened me up to actually being able to receive
something that I think was already,
had been there for a long time.
You know, 'cause when I look further back, I can see,
I feel like he was working on me, you know?
But it took that, like her passing,
to make me feel like I could trust maybe what I was seeing.
So yeah, it was crazy.
But these encounters, like I said, there was two of them,
very distinctly, two encounters and they planted seeds.
And then I started looking for a church.
And there were so many more things that happened, you guys.
Like I can't even describe like seeing a guy in,
I'll share this one story 'cause it's pretty unique.
At the Sun Prairie Children's Museum,
I saw this guy wearing this hoodie and it was really cool
and it looked like very like, you know,
like a metal band kind of thing.
And I was like, where'd you get your hoodie?
And he's like, oh, it's a friend's band.
And then later on that night,
I was watching testimony stories and this video popped up
and I started watching this.
It was about a pastor from Lake Geneva
interviewing this guy that was in corn,
a guitarist who had given his life to Jesus
and it was his story.
And I was watching that and then there was a pop-up
for a music video.
I click on it, I was like blown away by this worship music.
It was, the band was called Holy Name.
And I literally had tears running down my face.
Like, and music is such a, you know, part of my soul
and it just spoke to me in a way that I don't know,
maybe yeah, I was reading the Bible
and I was doing all of these things,
but that made me feel like you have a place here.
Like, and even though that sounds silly,
it was so impactful.
And then I started looking for more about this band.
Who is this band?
I click on their website and what hood do you think
pops up when I clicked on the merch tab?
That band, I'm not even kidding.
That experience literally gave me like chills
because it just felt like, wow, like this is your,
this is the path, you know?
And that's when I really just went all in kind of.
- That is amazing.
- Yeah.
- It's crazy too, 'cause I think it's,
I think that, well, obviously the Lord knows
for each individual person,
the things that are needed to draw him,
to draw us to him.
And so it's crazy that even taking into account
like this metal backer, this rock music background
that you have and all these little things that he's like,
I am going to like, I'm going to reveal myself to you.
Which is like, the fact that he cares about
these really small details,
just so he can know you and be in relation with you
is like so encouraging to hear.
- I agree.
I think that's what I was gonna say is,
my favorite thing about hearing people's stories
is how, and we said this in the last podcast,
but that Jesus and God in pursuing us,
he's not prescriptive.
It's not like, and then step A and step B instead of,
if you ask anybody so many times,
their stories are wildly different,
but there's a common thread of, I was being invited.
You know, I think I was talking with somebody
and she kept saying like, I don't know.
I think I'm just, I keep coming here
and I'm trying to find Jesus.
I'm trying to find Jesus.
And the more I've heard her story,
I got to kind of just pull her aside and say,
I don't think you're trying to find Jesus.
I think Jesus is finding you.
Just the way that you're describing this,
like you are feeling this invitation into something.
He's not hiding.
- No.
- But it's kind of that awakening, right?
That's one of our mission statements is that like,
we want to help awaken people to Jesus.
That Jesus is here.
He is not hiding.
We don't need to find him like secretly,
but sometimes we just need an eye-opening moment
to be like, oh my goodness,
he's been a part of my life from the beginning
and I just need to start seeing him and how he's working.
But I love that it's so personal that it was a rock band.
- Yes.
- You know, it's like,
I'm gonna actually redeem that part of your life.
- Exactly.
And you know what was crazy too,
is the interview between Brian Headwelsh and this pastor.
I looked into it, I'm like, who is this pastor?
It was literally a church here in Wisconsin.
Like, yeah, of all things.
And I know like whatever, maybe the algorithm,
but like it was still pretty impactful.
And yeah, there were so many things that happened like that
and I just couldn't deny it.
And I did have a, it was a pull.
It was the Holy Spirit.
Like I think it was literally like that I just,
maybe before I wouldn't have been open to receiving that.
- That's cool.
- That's amazing.
So you kind of are on this journey
and you're feeling this invitation,
you're reading the Bible.
You mentioned before we started the podcast,
you were listening to testimony stories,
which I think is so cool hearing
about how God works in individuals' lives.
Like this matters, this changes.
When did it shift for you?
When was that moment of like,
okay, this isn't a journey anymore.
Like I am making a decision.
Like I've experienced Jesus, there's no doubt.
And I am like, this is it, surrender, give my life.
You know, what did that look like for you?
- Well, I mean, I did also read some books.
And one of them was by an author named Cy Gart,
who's like a biochemist, I think,
or a physicist or something.
And because I do have a science background,
and I'm always, always was interested in science.
He also gave me a perspective that was from a scientist
that was an atheist turned believer.
And that was also super impactful
because some of my like questions
were revolving around like science, religion,
like how does it work together?
And I saw very clearly from that and other resources
that it works together.
Like actually science is evidence of God, literally,
like DNA and like the way our human bodies,
I mean, and that was an eye-opening moment for me,
really making that connection
'cause I was always so fascinated by that.
Like, yeah, like how DNA works
and like just the process of creating a human being,
you can't tell me that is,
there's not some sort of divine intervention.
- Yeah, it's not random.
- That's not random, it just can't be.
It's so complex.
So there was some actual like reading some books.
So I had the intellectual part.
It was the heart that was trying to catch up
with my knowing from a intellectual standpoint.
And it just, it was over time.
Honestly, it was just plugging in,
like being immersed in the word reading,
coming to church when I finally found Heartland 2,
which took me a while.
I went to a different church first, two different churches.
And one was like, nope, this isn't it.
I just felt really like, not my place, you know, like,
and then I came to Heartland and I was like,
it was just like, so coming here
was an integral part of that and the music, you know,
I love the music here.
And then, okay, I'm getting off track now.
See, I'm rambling.
- I love it.
- Let's bring it around.
What was the question again?
- So kind of this journey
and then what was that one decision moment?
- So yeah, I guess it was just many things.
And then it led me to a point of where when you guys,
the announcement of like, we're doing a baptism
and it's going to be outside.
And just in my heart, I knew, it was like,
that's where my heart and my head connected.
And I think it was like, I'm getting baptized.
Yep, I'm going to do it.
And it was just a very strong feeling of,
yeah, this is what I want to do.
So for me, it really, I think culminated with the baptism.
And then that experience itself, it just felt,
yeah, like maybe any inhibitions I had,
cause for a while there, I had kind of an imposter syndrome
feeling like I'm not a church person.
I don't belong here, you know?
Or maybe that, you know, some of the things that I've done,
I wouldn't be eligible or something.
I had a lot of misconceived notions
about what it meant to be a Christian, you know?
And what it meant to follow Jesus.
And I thought it kind of was a,
well, you have to get right and get 100%
before you walk in the door.
And when I came here and realized like,
you're always talking, that's not what it is at all.
Like you come as you are.
Like this is how you are redeemed, you know?
It's just, it's so interesting how misinformed I was really.
So yeah, the baptism, that was it.
And after that, it really did feel like,
I mean, it was just like a connection and an anchor
and like all of those things, like the Holy spirit, I think.
I just felt like maybe filled with that at that point,
you know? - Yeah, absolutely.
- And it's such a moment of surrender.
- Yes, we want to do it in front of people,
especially as like, you know, a closeted Christian.
Like, which I literally felt like I was.
And like, even just like,
I don't know who I should talk to about this.
Like some of my best friends, I was afraid.
I was literally afraid because it's not like
I was an atheist because I wasn't,
but no one would have ever expected it, you know?
And I was kind of nervous.
How would people receive that information?
And so to do the baptism, just to be there,
and this is what I'm doing,
it was like a strong message even to myself.
Like, okay, yeah, you're in it, you know?
- Yeah, it's a public declaration
of a personal inward change.
- Right.
- So, you know, you kind of made this decision
full surrender, right?
Like, okay, Lord, do take my life.
I want to learn, I want to grow.
I want to deepen this relationship with you.
What has that, what difference has that made in your life?
Kind of now a year and a half post that experience
where actually you came on Easter.
And then, yeah, what difference has that made in your life?
And how does that look now?
- Yeah, you know, watching your dad,
the interview that you had with him,
it really affected me because I had such a,
I have a close relationship with my father as well.
And he, this is just an example.
He had, he was always the closest person to me.
I looked up to him.
He was my inspiration.
You know, I feel like, you know, people talk about amuse.
I feel like my dad was my muse and I was his.
He's a very creative person, an artist, a musician.
And so we had this strong bond.
And he had a aortic aneurysm dissection
about seven years ago.
And being under bypass, he had a series of mini strokes
and some seizures and things like that.
And he, it literally changed him.
His personality was different.
And that connection that we had, it was like, it was gone.
It was weird.
It was like, he was no longer, like he was still my dad,
but it wasn't the dad that I knew.
And that was like really difficult
because I feel like I was grieving this loss of this person
even though he was still here, right?
Like, and so that happened long before I came on this journey,
but it's weird because ever since that happened,
I feel like I've always looked to the outside
for to feel like I said, I was just seeking a career.
I was seeking finances.
Like once I have this amount of money, I'll feel good.
Once I find my life partner, I'll be good.
Like it was always outside validation
or seeking to fill this, whatever this was.
And when I found Jesus and really made that surrendered,
it was almost like it filled that.
Like I didn't need my dad to be everything to me.
I didn't need my husband to check every single box.
I didn't need my friends to, it was like,
I just, I don't need to rely on myself 100% anymore
or others, you know, and they can just be fallible,
human beings like we all are,
because now I have this strength that's coming from him.
And that to me has been the most profound change.
And like I said, I had like anxiety.
I would struggle to fall asleep at night.
Like I would take, I tried all different medications,
you know, exercise, eating well, like doing everything.
And I still, my mind just wouldn't shut off.
And I had all these weird anxieties.
And that stuff is like, like obviously I have that sometimes
when it's necessary, when it's normal to have anxiety.
But I feel this real inner strength that I know is,
is because I have this relationship now.
And it's like a heavenly father, literally.
So I feel like taking care of innocence.
And like, I guess, anchored, like grounded.
And it, and even just joining the worship team, like that.
So I had the baptism.
And then I joined, I just finishing rooted right now.
But prior to that, I took a different Bible study
at a different church and just kind of doing things
in the community.
And when I saw there was a, you know,
a call out to join a team and I saw that there was one
for the band, I thought, you've got to do it.
Like you've got to do it.
And I had always wanted to be in a band.
I was always too scared.
I was too scared.
I had opportunities to like try out, couldn't do it.
Just this weird self doubt.
And because I had this connection, I was filled with like,
you can do this, like you will do this
because you're not alone in this.
In anything that you do, you're not alone, you know?
And you don't need the outside validation.
I don't even need my own validation.
Like, yeah, I'm still nervous, but like,
I'm filled with this feeling of it's okay,
you can be nervous, but you're still gonna move forward
and do this.
And yeah, so that's what it is.
And I think honestly, that's what allows me to even
go and sing.
It's not of my own doing, 'cause if it was,
I would have been doing that 20 years ago,
'cause that's how long I've wanted to sing.
So that to me is the biggest truth is like, wow, like,
and when I am singing, I literally feel kind of filled
with the Holy Spirit I do, you know?
- Yeah, yeah, I believe it.
That's amazing.
- It is, I know you saying that I think that
so many people are gonna connect with that
because I think that it reminds us of just like
the personal-ness of Jesus.
Like, you saying like, I have found fulfillment in him.
- Literally.
- In relationship with him, and I think that we sometimes
forget that he cares so deeply about those things too.
So that's really powerful.
- Yeah, yeah, and it's just cool that like you said,
just to see all these little things that are just
so personal to you, and that it feels like you said,
like, God cares about me.
He's not just this boss in the sky that like dips in
and a little bit and is like, you good?
Okay, I'm heading back up.
You know, like everything feels so intentional
and feels, you know, if it does feel so, yeah, personal.
- Right, and like I can go to him too if I'm, you know,
'cause it's not like it's all perfect, right?
- Right.
- You know, there's still those moments where it's like,
oh gosh, you know, what's gonna happen?
I need guidance.
And then it's like, yeah, I can go to him for that.
I don't need to call like seven friends.
You know what I mean?
And get all these different perspectives of people
that don't actually know or have their own bias.
So yeah, it's definitely a wonderful feeling,
that's for sure.
And I feel like it's also, I'm so excited to see
where it's gonna lead, you know, this,
'cause I'm still learning, I'm still growing,
I'm still pursuing, and it just feels like
it's just very exciting to see how it's gonna happen.
And then what's also fascinating is that he was working
in my husband at the same time.
Remember, I told you I was laying awake at night,
reading the Bible low key, trying not to like,
you know, have him find out.
And then one day when I was like,
do you mind if I take our son to like church service?
And he's like, why would I mind?
I was like, I don't know.
I mean, we'd never talked about it before.
And at the same time, he was like, you know,
I feel like I also wanna go to church.
And I'm like, okay, this is crazy, let's go.
I mean, so, and he's now like, he comes to Heartland
and he, every night, he listens to the Bible app
before he goes to sleep, instead of watching the office,
which I'll tell you is amazing
because I hated hearing the office every night of my life
for 15 years, you know.
- He's doing the Bible just less secretive than you.
- Yeah, exactly, yeah.
- I had to do this in secret.
- No, he's living out loud.
But no, so it's amazing too that he also,
like what are the chances?
- Yeah, it's just cool.
- What are the chances?
Very cool.
- So what would you say to someone who is,
maybe where you used to be?
Somebody who is maybe kind of struggling
with those same things of finding that validation
from outside or even in that seeking space of maybe
that is they're trying to connect that head and heart.
Just kind of where you used to be.
What would you say to them just as encouragement,
especially if they maybe feel like,
I haven't had that encounter with Jesus yet.
Like I feel like I'm still on this journey,
but kind of like you were listening
to all these stories, right?
But in your like, I'm seeing your story,
I'm seeing your story, I'm seeing your story,
but I haven't experienced fully my own.
What would you say to that person
who's wanting that and seeking that?
- Yeah, I mean, I would say just keep moving forward.
- Yeah.
- Just keep going to church, if that's what you're doing,
keep reading the Bible, keep watching the testimonies.
Like whatever it is that you feel compelled to do,
continue to do that.
And it's just like anything in life.
You know, you don't get automatic results
if you go to the gym for like a week.
Like you have to consistently do these things
and it's those small repetitive actions over time.
It's like compound interests.
Like you just keep going
and it may not be this like fireworks are going off.
Like I've never heard an audible voice
that I would say, that was Jesus, he spoke to me.
I've never had that.
I was waiting for that moment.
Who knows, it may happen sometime,
but it hasn't yet, but don't get discouraged
and just keep moving forward
in the direction that you feel compelled to go.
And also don't feel like you aren't the right person.
Like, you know, don't get caught up in that
because that is how, you know, maybe you wanna call it Satan.
I don't know.
There's some spiritual warfare stuff that goes on.
I think when you start to seek actively and aggressively,
there's sometimes feelings of roadblocks.
Like I'll share one thing that happened.
I had been looking for a cross necklace.
This is something that for me was like,
almost like the baptism was huge,
and then I really wanted to wear a cross
because to me, I would never have worn a cross before.
Like that's something that, you know,
when it was fashionable like 15 years ago,
everyone was wearing cross necklaces.
And I was like, I don't know.
I feel like that's a sacred thing.
I don't wanna just put on like a cheap cross.
And you know what I mean?
It seems a little trite.
So when I decided I wanted to wear a cross,
it was like, I'm gonna research this.
I'm gonna find the cross for me.
And when I finally did the first couple of days I wore it,
I kid you not, I had a really weird anxiety,
this weird kind of like self-doubt
that felt like spiritual warfare for real.
Like that I almost wanted to take it off.
Maybe I'm not ready.
Maybe this is too soon.
And I shared that with a few,
like my husband and a few other friends in my rooted group.
They were like, no, like that's real.
Like that wasn't just me being crazy.
But I kept it on.
And I'm like, nope, I'm whoever you are
that is trying to bring me down.
I'm not going back there.
So, you know, I guess, yeah, just keep moving forward.
And it's not like 100% solve all your problems situation.
And I think we talk a lot about that at church
about, you know, in your darkest moments,
like in the valleys, like that's when he is there too.
- Yeah.
- So yeah, that's what I would say.
- Those are wise words to live by.
- Really?
- Yeah.
- Yeah, thanks for sharing all of that.
- Yeah, and I think it's beautiful.
Cause I think, I think similarly we kind of think
like the gym, right?
We were going to go and we do this thing.
And then if it's not like in a week,
we don't see huge muscles like, wow, what's the point?
See, I tried and it didn't work.
- Right.
- But building that stamina.
And like you said, and having people around you,
I think it's so important.
I think you've been mentioning your rooted group
and people who are also pursuing Jesus at the same time.
Not that we shut the rest of the world out.
That would be silly.
But having other people to pour in and, you know, discern
like, what is this?
What am I feeling and give you, you know,
point you back to the strength and hope of Jesus.
- Yeah, and also that it doesn't have to be like
you've come to the conclusion of you agree with everything
that the Bible says, you have absolutely no questions.
That's another huge misconception.
Like you're actually allowed to question things
and that's encouraged.
And you just have to find the right community.
Of course there is, cause that's something I struggled with
and thinking about the world and about some of the, you know,
the damaging things that religion has done.
And here we talk about that.
That isn't like a taboo subject.
Like it's not like, you know,
once you become a Christian, we're all good.
Everything's good.
You don't ask questions.
You follow the rules and then you'll go to heaven.
Like no, these are real people that have real questions
and real struggles.
And like, and it's all, it's all part of it.
You know, it isn't a, you know, like,
I think a lot of times in life too,
you reach a certain age where you think,
once I get to this point, everything's going to be good.
Like this peak.
And then you come to realize there is no peak.
Like the journey itself of life,
it is the journey itself, like the daily living.
That's what makes our lives, you know,
that is what life is.
It isn't an end game.
It's not an end point.
So you may not ever feel a hundred percent.
And I think that's like with everything.
- Yeah.
- I remember there was a season,
I felt like God was really teaching me a lot
and it was awesome and exhausting at the same time.
You know?
And I remember being like, Lord,
could I have like a 10-year break?
Could I just like post?
Could you not teach me anything for 10 years?
He said no.
- Yeah.
- But I was like, could I have like just arrived enough?
And I think that is the part of faith.
- Yes.
- But I think we're growing and changing
and molding in any arena.
It's not like outside of faith that we just,
like it's happy life.
I think that's hard, you know?
And so I think, yeah, being on this journey
with a God who knows us so personally and loves us,
what a beautiful place to be.
- Exactly.
- Well, thank you so much, Rachel.
- Yes, I think it's so many people
are gonna relate to that story.
And I hope too you get opportunity
to keep sharing your story.
- Yeah, I hope so.
- Like you'll be those encounters for people
that you have.
- No, I honestly feel like, you know,
we're from here sort of because it's like,
I feel like that's more where I feel drawn to go
but where I'm afraid to go a little bit, you know?
Because not everybody in my life knows about this part of me.
And I mean, it's also because I don't live in Canada anymore.
So, you know, I can't like tell my friends
to come with me to church.
'Cause I would, I'd be like, you gotta come to Heartland.
If you're ever in Madison, come to Heartland,
James' plug.
But no, it's like, I feel that I wanna share my story more
