Welcome to the Handsome Pod. We're here in the Good Hand Studio presented by Allstate. Thanks Allstate. Thanks Allstate. Yeah. I know. And thank you guys for tuning in. I'm Fortune Feaves, sir. Oh, I'm May Martin as well. Oh, and I'm Tick Notaro as well. Yes. We haven't changed since the last episode. I feel like we keep getting more attractive, or at least you two do. You two do. You're looking mighty fine. You are. I wanted to hear. You're looking tan. You're looking outdoorsy. Can I show you how tan I am? Please. Yeah. Have I shown you that? Yeah. We noticed it. Taking off Feel Apple Watch. If you're listening, Tick is revealing the craziest watch tan. That is a quite a farmer's tan, as they call those. Yes. I farm with an Apple Watch. It's good to see you guys. Good to see you. Not you. Let's see the little twinkles in your eyes. Well, we don't get to see each other in person enough in studio and live shows. No offense to our Zoom recordings, but I was talking to Stephanie about it. I was like, I got to say, the in studio recordings and the live shows, they're electrifyingly. Like, I really, really look forward to that. Yeah. Me too. Very fun. I feel like, well, because you know, it's when you're with each other, you're picking up on each other's energy. Yeah. Well, and Stephanie just went to her first in person audition. Oh, my gosh. Oh. In six or seven years. Wow. Wow. I think it's a couple in person. They got to bring it back. Well, this, I was going to say audition or but casting director has fully brought it back. Yeah. I think it's crucial. Yeah. I'm getting nervous though, in person. I am, I think I'm probably better on on Zoom. I think I'm better in person. Really? Yeah. So you can charm them with your games and your, you know, the old personality gets to shine. Yeah. Yeah. And Zoom, I get a little bit lazy with the lines. Yeah. Because I know I have it on the screen if I need it or is in person, I have to be off book. Yeah. So I think I'm better off book. But it's hard. It is hard to memorize. I did some off book in person therapy. Oh, yummy too. What does that mean? I just mean my off book for therapy. Yeah. I mean, I normally, my therapist moved to Michigan in the pandemic, I think. Is it been that long? Yeah. And a minute. Yeah. But I mean, every now and then, she comes in town and then I do in person. It's better, right? It's so much better. I just started up with someone, I had one session with her months ago and then now I've got two in the bag. I love her. Not in a weird way. I just think she's great. Not in a weird way. I'm not obsessed with her. I'm not like that. I'm not thinking about you all the time. I'm not googling her. I did give her a Google. Yeah, yeah. You gave her a Google. You got to give her a Google. You give everyone a good Google. I got to give everyone a good Google. And just to make sure there's no weird stuff. Yeah. See what's up. Yeah. She's really funny. That's what is the difference between funny and like subtly, yeah. Is that what you're looking for in a therapist? It puts me at ease. I like to chuckle after I reveal my trauma. Yeah. She laughs at you. She's doing bits all the time. Yeah. No, she just like, I like it when a therapist swears every once in a while. Like, I go, the world's fucked. She goes, it's fucked. It makes me feel safe. You know? If she swore too much, I'd feel unsafe if she was like, this fucking, she's walking a fine line. Yeah. All right. Yeah. I've heard my therapist cuss a couple of times. I was like, it jolted me into reality. Yeah. Yeah. You're like, oh, this is a person. Yeah. This is a person. Yeah. It's not just ahead. You've had the same therapist for a year or so now. Since 2018. Wow. That's how it should be, right? You're building a long-term relationship. I don't, I don't have a therapist currently because my life is totally, totally easy-peasy. Everything's smooth. Yeah. Yeah. You're not carrying any loads. I was seeing a therapist for a while and then I just, it just kind of fell off. It's hard to make good on those things, but I feel like every time you follow through one like a self-care thing for yourself, then you're teaching yourself that you value yourself. Mm-hmm. That's what I'm regurgitating what someone said to me. I've really been sticking with it. Yeah. I'm every, it's Wednesday at 7 a.m. Whoa. I would be. Yeah. I get it. My internet would be out. That's early morning. No. That's impressive. I do have to remind myself to look at my hair and my face a bit before I get on that face. I feel there's no like white, crusty thing. Anything. Yeah. What time do you wake up normally? I would say between 5'30 and 6'30. Yeah. What time do you normally wake up? Nine. Eight, nine. Yeah. About like 7'45. Mm-hmm. Exactly in the middle of the two of you. Isn't that so us? That's so us. It's classic us. Classic us. It is. Thomas, what time do you get up? Around 8. 8 a.m. Yeah. Yeah. I feel like I know that. I know it in my heart and soul. Yeah. The Thomas rises around 8. 5'30 is too much for me. Yeah. That's a little too early for me. I know it would change my life. You'd get so much done, but I don't, I can't fall asleep at night. Guys, every time I drive here and I'm, we're doing in person, I kind of am hoping that you guys will see me arrive in my car, I realize. I just like-- I didn't see you pull up. Oh. Did you see that I hit the fence? Oh my gosh. I think I saw you while you, maybe I saw you while you were already halfway in. I pulled in, feeling good, thinking, I wonder if this is their cars. I wonder if they saw me. And then just like, as I was parked in this car, I wasn't there. My car wasn't there. All the front fence. Oh yeah. Just hit the front fence there. Mm-hmm. And how'd that feel? Just classic you? A little tap. Yeah. I'm here. I'm here. I stated this girl that her grandmother-- she lived in a trailer as a kid. And when her grandmother would come over to visit, she'd slam into the trailer and that's how they knew that grandma was there. Grandma's home. Yeah. And then also when her grandmother went into a retirement, not retirement, like a nursing home. Yeah. Which is pretty retired. Yeah. But nursing home, she said that there was a woman in a wheelchair. Who said to her, she was like, let me out of here. And the girl was a very young girl visiting her grandmother. And she-- it was an elder to her. So she opened the door. And there was a ramp. And the woman rolled herself out down the ramp. But the wheelchair went off of the ramp and her leg came off. And it came off. And it was a prosthetic leg. Oh, my God. But she didn't-- I didn't pick up one that part. She didn't know that as a child. And she saw the whole thing happen. And the child's-- by her leg just came off. And her leg just flew off. Just how many things she did. Yeah. That's how I featured. Exactly. Oh, my God. Yes. So we're going. Of course, you'd open the door. Of course. If somebody were like, open the door. Let me out. Oh, sure. There you go. Down the ramp. And on the leg, off the leg. With the leg. Poor lady. Yes. I don't think she's with us anymore. That's right there. No. Bless her. Oh, I have something for you for your house. You do? Yeah, I brought it in. What about my house? Well, this is a bar for my feet. A decade. This is-- It looks like it's going to be a little bit more.

You said that so humbly and shyly. I'm going to the US. I'm going to watch tennis. When is it? Yeah, where is it? I will be going September nights. So this will have already aired. I'm sure at a great time. I'm sure you had a blast. I was held in the US open one. Yeah. I invited my brother, my eldest brother to go with me. So we'll see if we end up having a fun. Just a two of you, brother, sister, bond. Yeah. Just a two of us. We haven't done anything together a long time. He hasn't, as of this recording, he hasn't told me and yes or no yet. So he said, yeah, he's keeping you. You guys have a lot of guests. Yeah, but yeah, I'm excited. Have you been? I've never been. I can't, I've been playing tennis since I was five years old. I see your what's so called those tennis shoes, the moral stance. I was calm to Sam Smith. Yeah, I've never been. So this is quite exciting. Is it like there's a whole like the US open like people dress up and wear little hats and stuff? Like you know, the way Wimbledon or people I don't know. No, I don't, I don't think it's dressed up like Wimbledon. There's no blazers and stuff. It's, but do they wear a little tennis outfits? Do they wear the candle? No, it's American. So there are always there's some people that look really nice and other people are super cash in like athletic gear. Yeah, yeah. Well, yeah, there was this comedian that I started out and stand up with. Her name was Carol Anne Leif. And she had a joke that I loved so much about the peep. In fact, I ran into her after a million years at some Oscar event. But she had this joke about in the audience that the whatever it tennis, I don't know if it's at Wimbledon or whatever. But when women show up in their tennis outfits, yeah, as though they're going to be like, oh, they're playing. Well, just, you know, they'll show up in tennis skirts and, yeah, so funny advisors to watch. It's like we've had an injury. Yeah. Um, if Miss Janet Johnson could please come down on the court, whatever she said. Anyway, it's like someone dressed as a pilot for every flight just in case. Yeah. Just in case. God, should we do an in memoriam? Oh, it's such a bummer, but I feel like we talk about Dolly Parton a lot on the pod. You guys are deep, deep fans love. Well, what's crazy is that the, our podcasts aired the, the morning that Dolly passed. And we happened to like randomly talk quite a bit about Dolly, saying one of Dolly's songs. We were talking about dressing up as Dolly. Yeah. Wait, I'm sorry. That's on this episode that's out today. The episode that aired a couple days yesterday, yesterday. Yeah. We talked a lot about Dolly. Yeah. And it came up the day that happened to pass like a, I don't, wow. Did she pass that morning or it was at least announced that she passed. Yeah. And so people were like listening to our episode, talking about her and, and you know, how much we love her. And then we're getting the, these notifications about her passing as they were listening, how trippy is that? So have we gotten comments of like, yeah. Oh, yeah. Where people are like, oh my gosh, people are being like, what a weird, weird one. Yeah, I think they know we recorded it earlier. But yeah. Wow. It's the Katie Kerr episode. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. But you know, obviously, we didn't know. God, what a loss. I know. And I think the, the thing everyone kept saying is like, she just seemed like she lived forever. Yeah. Yeah. I can't imagine a world without Dolly. I know. It's like part of your inner world dies to like someone you grew up watching. And yeah. And also when, when some of classes away and then you see all the clips of them over the decade, it's being interviewed. And she just made it look so easy to be tolerant and compassionate. Even in like the 80s or whatever, she, she was so like, inclusive. Yeah, just love you. Or what's the big deal? Like, I'm a, and Stephanie showed me a video of the, um, Buckingham Palace, um, playing nine to five. Yeah. And that really got me. I know. Even in England, you think of her as such an Americana kind of, but yeah, it was like their brass band or their marching band from nine to five. Yeah. Well, I mean, I just, people were trying to think like, is there another comparable person? Obviously, there will never be anyone like her. But there really isn't a comparable person because I mean, truly, she went across all aisles, all different kinds of people, all different kinds of backgrounds. And I don't think anyone can live up to her legacy because what we're learning. And a lot of people knew already is how generous she was. Yeah. How the, I think she gave away $500,000,000,000,000. Yeah. So like the amount of people she touched, not only with her money, but with her music, with her songs, with her, you know, acting, there is no one that compares to what she has done in her lifetime. Yeah. And so everyone, like every video was people solving. Yeah. You know, apparently, I mean, I love this idea that like one of the highest forms or places of enlightenment, you can reach is generosity is just that's so nice. I like that concept. Yeah. Yeah. And didn't she on the, on the same day, she wrote, I will always love you. And Jolene, she wrote them both on one day. What, imagine that? And imagine writing, and I saw her live. Have you seen her live? No, I never get to zero. This woman fingernails to here, playing a banjo. Yeah, amazing. I don't even, I'm like, what the hell am I even looking at? Yeah. Aside from a guitar, a banjo. Sure, there's like kicking, but like the fingers on the area. Yeah, I don't know. I got to meet her. And I, she's so lovely. And you know, like everybody just wanted to tell her, you know, thank you for everything. And it was one of those places where they tell you not to take pictures. So I was like, I'm not going to ask, I want to be respectful. And then I got home and like, everyone at the party had taken a picture with her. And I was like, Oh, my God. So like, I, you know, wish I had that. But you know, I just am grateful I got to meet her just to like say thank you. Right. Um, but man, I mean, I, everyone I talked to the day she died just talked about how much they cried. Yeah, I had dinner with Natalie mains that night. And I was like, I cried today, she's like me too. Like I cried today about Tim Curry, who passed by the day after dolly. I don't know why that got me too. And similarly, I always for years was like, I want to, there was something online, maybe on his website, you could buy like a 20 minute conversation with him on zoom. Oh, really? Yeah, I guess he was doing that. Like, like, cameo with that type of thing. But you could, and I was always like, I'm going to do that. I'm going to, I'm going to do that just to tell him like, yeah, and that my dad went to the stage show. And, and he was in that play with my grandpa and like rock hero picture show just was so huge for me, the message of like fluidity and fun. And, and he and dolly partner both have that like twinkle in their like a sense of fun and playfulness and yeah, he was beloved as well. It's kind, it was kind of trippy to because both of them were 80 and my mom's 80. Right. I've been kind of lately been like, oh, my mom is like so young to me. Yeah. And I felt that way with, with, you know, them. I'm just like, 80's 80 feels too young. Yeah. In these times. Yeah, it's weird how that's happened. Yeah. Where if somebody 75 dies, people are like, so young. Yeah. Where is, you're like, I feel like at the 70's, it's like 65. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, you feel, I felt like I just expected dolly to have at least another 10 years. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Because on, on the exterior, she's always looked so amazing. Yeah. And even in the videos they posted of her from a week before she looked incredible. Yeah. You could tell she was a little tired, but you know, other than that, yeah, I was thinking it was a huge shock. So we definitely just wanted to just rest in peace, dolly, Tim. Yeah. I was listening to an interview with Tim Curry and they said, did you ever go to one of those like, rock your picture show late night screenings? Like in disguise going watch? Mm-hmm. You know, where people shout out. And so he said he went and then they thought he was an imposter and they tried to kick him out. And then he showed his passport and said, I am Tim Curry. Yeah. But it was after that earlier he kicked him out. Oh my god. And then she said, oh, I'm so sorry. Do you want to come back in? And then he said, I wouldn't dream of it. And then he started like, cat.
- The link back. - I love the colors. - I love the colors. - It's like a real love funny. - Yeah. - That is similar to a Dolly story where she went to a drag show where all the guys were in drag as Dolly, and she entered the contest and walked across the stage. And she said that she got the least amount of claps. 'Cause you know all the drag queens look unreal. The hair was crazy, the outfits were like Dolly on steroids. - Yeah. - And Dolly was just being Dolly. - And she said she got the least amount of claps. - And she said on the inside she was dying, laughing. - And ended up losing the Dolly Farton drag contest. - That's like the amount of times I've lost the Chignotara role. - She just lost my box box. (laughing) - Dolly would like that joke, too. - Thank you, Mr. Thomas. I lost my box, my box is back. - Yeah, it is girl. - Well, I did one of, and in my animated HBO special called "Drawn," I had a bit about listening to a Dolly Parton song. And the bit goes very dark and gory. - Oh great. - And we had to ask for permission to use the song. And I was scared that it wouldn't be approved because it gets very dark and blurry. And apparently when they reached out to the manager, I mean, who knows if this is true, but that Dolly personally approves everything. - Oh really? - And that she approves that. - That's cool. - Yeah, and it's a very gory joke to her very upbeat song. (laughing) - So, that was a fun little like, oh, yeah. And my friend, Beth Malone, has been working with Dolly on the Broadway play of Dolly's life. And Dolly wrote it, was there every day working on every bit of that musical. - It'll still go ahead, right? - I hope so. - Yeah. - I would think so, yeah. - Yeah, more than ever. - Yeah. - You could hold one and see it. - Yeah. - Anyway, we love you. - We love you. - For sure. - And Tim and Tim. - Oh my gosh. - And all of our handsome listeners. And should we get into our question? - It's why we're here, right? - It is why we're here. - It's why we're here. It's why we're queer and people need to get used to that. - That's right. (laughing) - Today's question, Oscar. Is an Emmy-nominated actor, director and producer known for movie franchises like the Hunger Games and Pitch Perfect, as well as TV shows like 30 Rock, Mrs. America, and the miniature wife. Elizabeth Banks is asking today's question. - Oh, you know what? Full circle moment. - Yeah. - Elizabeth was in the Spider-Man, as you know. - Sammy. - I do know that. - Tell me what you are. - I do. - I was a journalist and I covered that movie premiere. And I remember very distinctly, she wasn't really known at the time. I don't believe that single Elizabeth in the bathroom. - That's, you remember it. - I don't know how. I remember that moment. I don't know why. - You thought it was gonna be big. - I just remember that moment. - Yeah, can you get what it takes? - Yeah. (laughing) - In fact, I'm gonna book you on my podcast down the road. - Hey handsome, it's Elizabeth Banks. I have a question for you today. And the question is, what is something that you have had a love affair with? That is not a person. So I'm thinking like an activity that you've loved like your lifelong runner and you can't live without it. Or you had a passionate quick brief affair with an animal that you just loved or with reading or a book or a director or just like something that just juices you up and fills you with excitement that you can't wait to do. - Interesting. - Great question. - It's not a person, a thing. - But it could be an animal. - Yeah, it could be an animal. - Yeah, that's a really good question. - Oh man. - I mean, I'm such a fan energy. Like that's such a big part. I have such an obsessive, especially in my teens like a really obsessive fandom of so many things. So I'm trying to think more like activities. - I mean, I guess, I mean, this is in the most basic forms of it, but I'm like so into espresso. You're like so in love with espresso. - I have a love affair with espresso. I'm excited to go to bed at night because I know I'll be waking up in the morning and I'll get to have it. - Did you have to train yourself to like the taste? - So what happened was I like most people when you drink coffee at first, want it so sugary sweet, 'cause I didn't, in my hometown, hardly anyone drank coffee when I was growing up. - Really? - And I drank coffee when I was three. - Yeah, there was like no coffee shop in my hometown. Not one. - What were they drinking? - I don't know, but I remember some parents, how were they drinking? - Some parents, some of my friends parents drink it. And I'd be like, "Oh, wow." But it was not a thing, like until like, and you know Starbucks, that culture didn't really take off for a while. And then when I moved to LA, the big drink was the ice blended from coffee bean. It was like Brittany Spears was drinking them and stuff. - Like a cream. - And you did everything Brittany did. - I even walked barefoot everything. - Famous like. (upbeat music) - As we get right into fall, I've been wanting to get a little cozy, but I had a problem. My blankets don't feel quite right. Some were scratchy, some were small. I couldn't get comfy. And it became huge, like coffee culture, I think really took off from there. We're all of a sudden there was Starbucks everywhere and it was just like a thing. - Like what year are you thinking? - This was like 2003. - Okay. - Agreed to disagree. - Starbucks was popping off in Seattle. I'm talking about, you know, there was certain spots where coffee was definitely popping off. But as a whole, I think early 2000s was not in your Poe Downtown. - That's right. Not in my Poe Downtown. - Do you like having everything about it? Like the process of the little cup, the beans grunt, like the more just the taste. - Okay. - I mean, no. - Am I in my grandmother drink coffee? But she only had it at like certain restaurants, like in, but that was not like an every meal kind of thing. But I just didn't, so coffee was just not part of my life. But then I got into coffee 'cause of the sugary ice blendids and it was sweet and delicious. - Brett and Ansage. - Brett. - Me and Brett drain her ice blendids. And then I finally, health wise had to reel in at one point and I did that whole 30. You know that. - What's whole 30? - Where you just eat whole foods. - Okay. - And you have to cut out all sugar, all carbs, all. - I've never done it, but I'm. - I did it twice and you have to cut it out for a month, I think, all these things. - For 30 days. - For 30 days. So I had to cut out all the stuff in my coffee. So I had to do it.
black coffee for a month. And I was like, oh, it turns out I do like the taste of espresso. So I've never gone back. I put a little bit of oat milk in it. And I don't add any sugar. A dollop of oat milk. I don't add any sugar. And I think I've said on here my drink of choices and ice cortada. Yeah. And that is my love affair. I love it so much. I love seeing you. You're so happy. And I made a talking about it. You can tell you have such a love affair with it. Oh my gosh. Is this a little tiny baby fortune? Baby fortune. I love it. I mean, hello girls. Now when did you do whole 30 and get off of Frappa whippers? Frappa whippers. That would have been, I was on a Mindy project because I got so, I don't know it was the end of the Mindy project because I got so fat doing the Mindy project. Don't you talk about my friend like that? No, I really did because we ate like crazy on that show. There was like two food trucks a week. They like fed as much. There was like jalapeno poppers at like 10 a.m. Oh, that's not fair. It was and I had no sub-control. And was it a show where as the season went on everybody was expanding. Yes, because the costume designer would be like, you know, so and so I was added just much in their pant size and yeah, I was telling everyone. Did you hear? I never heard of it. So I added X amount and the pant size. And so at the end of the Mindy project, I was like, I have got to detox my body. So yeah, I did it. And I lost a lot of weight doing it. And I stuck to it for a while. What year was that? I apologize. I don't know what year it was that the Mindy project. 2017. Oh, okay. Yeah. So that's changed my relationship. Yeah, with coffee. Okay. And you have a machine at home. I do have a breville. Yeah, yeah. Because it's honestly with, you know, this economy you guys, everything so expensive. If I were to go buy coffee every day, that would be very pricey. Yeah. So it does save me a lot of money. Yeah. Making it at home. But yeah, it's got the, it's like a little tiny barista machine. It has the grinder. Yeah. And you do the thing and you do the thing and you put it in there and it's, you know, fortune and her love affair. My dad told us how you handle it too. It's right. For a minute, my dad was like a spokesperson for a coffee company. Oh, nice. And they had a serious man. He's so mysterious. And they said, can we make a video of you talking about how you about how coffee is like wine. And you should pair different coffees with different foods. I don't think he believes that to be true. Or also he, at the time was a heavy smoker and very few taste buds, but he really went for it and he was like, it sounds a little precious to talk about coffee, the way you talk about wine. But I remember the video so clearly that he was like, I might have a dark roast with a delicious piece of chocolate cake. Oh, that's amazing. That's amazing how you describe him. That is my jam. Yes. Chocolate and coffee. Yeah. When we go out to eat, I like to have a chocolate dessert. Yes. And pair it with an espresso. Yeah. Decaf espresso. Well, you guys know one of my favorite desserts. Me. I forgot it. I forgot it. I forgot about it. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, I forgot it is my jam. I'm a peanut off. I got a bitch. Yeah, you're cheating on your peanut butter. Yeah. I forgot about it. I forgot about it. No, love me some off. I got it. It's just ice cream, preferably vanilla with a shot of espresso on top. Do we need merch? This says I forgot about it. What is it? Forget about it. I forgot about it. Maybe you never know. Anyway, I got very excited. Yeah. That is truly a love affair because I don't get very giddy about things like that. You're giddy. Yes. I get. Aren't you twirling your hair? Yeah. What is a twirl in my hair? You are twirling your hair. You are a day drunk. Yeah. And you were like, oh my god, girl. And you're just, oh, I don't think that was so aired yet. Oh, wow. I can't remember what I was giddy about, but yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Take what about you? I like matching that energy good luck matching that. I want to see what it looks like. You have a love affair with something. Oh, my gosh. You should have caught me when I first met Stephanie. That was cuckoo bonker town. And you were just like, I was like, like Tom Cruise jumping on the sofa. Yeah, eyes were crossed. Yeah. I didn't even. Well, my lord. You know, I was thinking, I mean, I've talked so much about, I, this is so boring. And I, this isn't what I'm going to use. But I was very, after being sick, very interested in, in food and like nutrition and how the body heals itself and hurts itself. And I was studying it and I was so into it. You were going to be a naturopath, right? I was going to start. Yeah. I was like, yeah, I was like, I think I want to start doing offering Zoom sessions and coaching people. And she's like, oh, my God, you are going to make hundreds of dollars. But I would say, especially on the heels of just doing that massive hike that was ranked rigorous, was it ranked rigorous? Yes. I missed that. Yes, ranked rigorous. It's really good for your next special ranked rigorous. It reminds me of when I did long distance cycling. Oh, yeah. I was so into that. Yeah. And I didn't have a car. And I cycled everywhere. I cycled to my stand-up shows. Yeah. I cycled on the road. Like I performed in Portland, Oregon, and then cycled to Seattle, Washington. Oh, my God. And it was truly, yeah. I'm picturing you doing stand-up in the in Lycra with these like bulging micro-shock thighs. But I was so into it. I was very inspired. My uncle is a cyclist. And when I would visit my uncle and aunt, there were all these books about long distance cycling and trips you can take and training. And I'd just, you know, hanging out, visiting. I'd pull these books off the shelf. And then I was like, this looks actually so cool to just pack your little bags on your bike. Yeah. And hit the road. Yeah. And I found it to be very meditative. And maybe I've talked about that. I call it connecting the dots in life. Where I don't think so. And I guess it's kind of the opposite of meditation. But it's still cleared my mind so much. Because I didn't listen to music. Yeah. And you got to be so present. Yeah. Very much so. And I would connect the dots in my life and think about, oh, maybe I should do this. So I've, oh, this person would be good to partner with that. Or maybe I should just ever, I just started connecting these dots and creating these constellations of like, oh, this is what I want to do. Or this is what I want to try. Yeah. And it just made me feel so good. And after I started having really bad back problems, I had to abandon it. And that's what was so nice about this past summer. I know I can't do these 50 and 100 mile bike rides anymore. A day. That's how far you were doing them a day. I was doing not every day. But when I would do a cycling trip, I do 50 to 100 miles a day. Right. Right. And it's no joke. It does not sound like it's no joke. But I'm good at endurance stuff. Yes. I'm not, I'm, that's my strength. But it felt nice to kind of hand it off to this long hike to ask for a rigorous. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And that feeling of accomplishment and like sort of exhaustion, but in a good way. And it's, and it's, it's challenging myself. Yeah. Like the competing against other people that doesn't drive me. Yeah. I'm not like, what, how fast did you or how many miles are? Yeah. It's, it's really like what I'm doing is, is what would drive me with that. And I can't claim that even though I do hike regularly, I can't claim that hiking has taken the place because biking was really what made my heart and soul. Yeah. But I do love hiking. And I'm very excited about the plan that I have with my friends to pick a beautiful spot around the world every year and go just take these long tracks and see gorgeous things and have great conversations. That's, that's, I guess. That's the new love affair. Do you, do you miss the cycling though? I don't at all. Oh, interesting. It's time. It totally had a time. You need it at the time and then. It's same with like, I used to play guitar and I was very in love with playing guitar and drum.
And I find it fun and I'm interested to do it here and there but when I think of cycling 100 miles a day for like a week. Yeah, I'm like what I can't even fathom that many miles. Where is like a yearly One week. Yeah track. Yeah, where you're walking maybe 10 miles a day or something. I can't quite figure out like marathon runners and stuff. Part of me is like what are you running from kind of like they're like when they're they're like bleeding from their nevels and stuff like they get so hurt by out of their shoulder. She in the pants as they run. Yeah, like and isn't the word marathon comes from the guy in ancient Greece who ran to tell them the Spartans are coming or something. He ran the length of a marathon and then they have no idea but maybe the word comes from then his heart exploded after he gave the news. It's like this is not a good length to be running. No, no, and I don't want that kind of Intensity. Yeah, this hike was rigorous and I'm glad I did it and I don't need to do it again. Yeah, and that's what inspired the you know what flat walks. Yeah, past beautiful waterfalls and cliffs. There you go. I mean, I'm totally in once a year. Yeah, for that. Yeah, not like let's pack up and yeah cycle. Yeah, for 100 miles. Anyway, that was an old love affair. I mean I've been trying to like listen but also I've been going I've been frantically trying to think about like I mean comedies of big one or I mean my fandoms are so such like flag posts in my life. And when you say comedy, is it more stand up or improv or what these days? I don't know if I'm it was always it was more like the green room. It was more like the atmosphere and being there and connection. Yeah, and in my teens, I did a lot of weird characters and improv and yeah, stand up when it's I've never been had a love affair with like going to clubs and doing a 20-minute set. I'm not good at it. And what do you mean? I just don't have short jokes and it's I guess because it was the early 2000s. I like the atmosphere felt scary. When coffee was taking off. When coffee was first discovered in America. A real coffee boom in the early 2000s. My in Britain, he started it. What I actually want to say is weed but I that I had a love affair with where I I mean and then now looking back, I'm like was I self-medicating and I find other ways to do that now. But when I first smoked weed I was like this is I'm home. I'm home. I'm home. Yeah, I was like I went to see dark side of Oz with the pink Floyd and they showed Wizard of Oz and you could smoke weed inside in the theater and I was like nothing has ever been more beautiful and then it felt like just such a like paradigm shifting thing and I would have done anything for it and I was so into the paraphernalia and the smell of it and the the process and the like oral fixation of like rolling and something like I really was so passionate about it and not in a not in a great way but so maybe does that I mean I did not smoke pop for a long time and then now I don't really. I just don't have a rule for myself of like never yeah but I yeah I'll never feel like I did in my teens with it and looking back it was it ended up being so disruptive to my life and but also it really saved me from harder drugs like when I stopped doing coke I think I wouldn't have been able to stop without weed it was like did you have a coke nail never I would never have a coke nail and I do think that's a red flag for a deeper more serious problem. Yeah but I really was I it was I got into coaxo young and then and then weed felt like a much softer kind of sillier especially after having a coke addiction not eating and just like and then weed is like I just want to eat cake with my friends and play super mario and have espresso with that cake maybe. Oh delicious and then tip your coaxies. Yeah I don't know coke so I have an either. I've never seen it. It's it's seen it for sure. Like so many drugs. I'm still cutting it. I've seen it but never done it. I feel like too busy cycling. Yeah I'm just in order to connect these dots in my I'm I'm apparently a lot of people with ADHD self-medicated in their teens with stimulants because it's like you I felt like I was in the room for the first time ever like for but I think so many drugs especially in California. It's like there's a culture around them where it's like you can use them as tools to you know and people do much of the micro dosing and so coke has no therapeutic benefits. I think I'm like well now it's only so bad for me. Now it's so dangerous with the so dangerous. I can't even imagine even dabbling in it. All the the cartels and like there's just no reason to do it and just makes people so insufferable and and coke makes people insuffer. Oh yeah. Yeah so I'm gonna say weed but yeah the love affair is over but yeah yeah y'all's love affair have ended years is ongoing. Continuing you're in a long time love affair. I forgot about it. Oh my gosh you guys. Should we hear what Elizabeth has to say? Yeah let's do it. So for me I'm in a I've had a bunch of love affairs with you know various things and ideas and movements and but right now I am in a passionate love affair with maja. It's like all I heard. I think about when I'm not doing it I'm thinking about when can I do it next? It's I love like a lady's weekend where all we do is heat and wear pajamas and drink a little bit and play maja. I love teaching it to people. I want other people to be I will teach you guys if you want. Yeah. So yeah I'm obsessed with putting on the lotion and I'm not new to it just to say I've been playing it for a little while so I know it's like all the rage right now and I feel like part of I've I've partially been about it for a while like it is real real fun and something that I just love doing so. Oh now okay we got to put on the list. It's like a big thing right it is a big thing right now. I'm keeping my first question now. What is it? Majaung is a Chinese board game that that's all I know. Thank you mate. Let's go to commercial. You seem like you were really going to come out. I thought of him. I thought of him. I thought of him. I know. I'm a man. I'm a board game. I wanted it. Yeah because I saw I can picture it. I learned about it from the movie Crazy Rich Asians. Okay. Um and knew it was it's been popular forever in Asian cultures obviously. Um but for whatever reason currently it's like all the rage people are playing it. We got to know like how. I guess because Elizabeth Banks is playing it with everyone. I can't say she's teaching everyone. I would like to learn how to learn. I would love to learn. I have a set Matt's wife bought me a set from China. Oh very cool. I can't believe I said weed and I should have said foosball. That's what I have calluses from my playing for hours every day. It's too late. Yeah it's too late. I'm not going to lie. We cannot go back now. It is foosball. It is foosball. Oh man I love it. Yeah. I get very how about Matt's ball while you're on weed. Yeah. That's it. Do you know Kelsey Cook? No. Very funny comedian. Her Netflix special just dropped recently. I think I saw the ad for it. Yeah. Her mom was a like champion foosball player and Kelsey is very good. I'm a real Kelsey lives now in Minneapolis but she tours all the time so at some point she'll be in LA. There's a foosball culture like me. It's too late. It's too late. It's too late. It's all right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No go ahead. Say it. Well, I went to a bar to play with Matt because usually we just play at my house and then this guy with long hair came up and was like, "Mu, what are you playing? You're playing foos?" And he played completely differently to us. He would trap the ball. Then he'd position all his guys like the game would sort of grind to a halt. Oh no. And then he'd just do a move like that. But it was a very fun. No. No. That's so annoying. Yeah. Yeah. I play foosball like an insane person. I was like, I want to play with you. What? Well, I just. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh. What a podcast. What a podcast. We did it again. We did it. We're always doing it. Yeah. I got to look up my standup days. Oh yeah. I would look. I have eight text messages waiting on me. All from Tom. - Oh, my God.
(laughing) - Well, I know I just added a bunch of shows in coming up in Morganton, North Carolina, October 4th. - Oh. - And then I added Jacksonville, Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. And I understand, but trust me, I wouldn't have done it if I didn't have to. Steamboat springs, basalt, and the list goes on and on forever because I'm comedian. - That's right. - People are gonna say, "When does your tour end?" I'm like, "Never." That's what I'm saying. It does not end. But I am, you know, as you know, I've scaled back to like a couple of shows a month and it feels good. - Good. - And if you enjoyed this episode and I know you did, please share it with your loved ones and help us build this community.
