The conversation blends humor, personal storytelling, and travel anecdotes to explore creative gift-making, memorable experiences, and deep local history. The host shares a nostalgic trip to Lexington, Kentucky, where they explore coffee shops, a castle, and quirky landmarks, emphasizing the joy of spontaneous, off-the-beaten-path adventures. A central narrative focuses on the Slippery Noodle Inn in Indianapolis—a historically significant building with a rich legacy as a bordello, speakeasy, slaughterhouse, and Underground Railroad stop. The inn's name comes from a family joke rooted in a dad’s humorous catchphrase, which evolved into a cultural touchstone and a source of community laughter. The story is layered with ghostly tales, including a woman named Sarah and spirits of formerly enslaved people, adding a supernatural and emotional dimension to its history. The host also highlights Zazzle as a platform for personalized gifts, using personal examples like custom mugs and apparel to illustrate its creativity and emotional value. These stories collectively celebrate the power of imagination, history, and human connection in shaping both personal and cultural experiences.

with my grinch holiday makeup kit a new sentence every time with you christine i've been waiting
for someone to talk about my lip gloss uh this is cindy luhu um is it
really yeah it's not
no i reserve that for one special day well the year this year people aren't gonna get it would
you like to pre-record it and we can have megan put it in oh my god on the spot who me as the
spotlight comes down my microphone swings into frame all right everyone we're hearing it now
or maybe you know what i'm gonna make you wait till christmas jack cut this and put it at christmas
what's it called kelly o's
when like kelly clarkson just like ripped just like handles hilarious i've never heard of that
but i love that kelly clarkson has now become a adjective or something where it's like oh they
kelly clarkson that and it's like they did the best version you've ever heard oh that's nice
because usually turning a person's name into a verb doesn't end so kindly you know you really
shrooted it yeah you really sheathed it you know what i mean no you kelly clarkson that that was
oh oh my god thank you happy to have witnessed it three months in advance i think kelly clarkson
sang the original um soundtrack so that makes sense yeah i think so too i'm obviously talking
about the original 1969 version of the tv special so i knew what you're saying okay just making sure
um anyway i don't know where we're cutting back into the episode but that got really weird and i
think my body's still returning to some sort of sizzling do you feel yourself sizzling a little
bit yeah it's sort of like you know glitching like my soul is like trying to like come back
but
like the grinch kind of the energy really like threatened threatened part of my soul
i feel threatened yeah you should you should that's called survival instincts
well christy that was everything uh yeah it was something for sure how are you what are you doing
thank you for asking i'm okay i'm um i'm so thirsty i'm drinking so much water i will have
to pee during this you know when you just like go through phases where you're like wow i'm just
i just i look such a hydrated queen and then for like weeks you're like i forgot water existed and
then you turn to the sponge you turn a spongebob i but water yeah i know yes that's me i um i feel
like i always alarm people when i have a really good swig of water and i out loud go oh god water
so good it's like your body's like oh my god it's literally like i had three seconds left yeah
yep um i understand congratulations i thank you it probably won't last but for now i'm riding the high
excellent i uh the high duration wow you're really on one today huh i am what's happening
oh it's in it we announced i'm leaving then i was like oh my god help my ego's been murdered
over and over um i i still haven't looked at comments yeah it's awkward it was really it was
it was it was an experience let's just say i was absorbing a lot of shock waves um in my system that
i see uh i actively ran away so yeah i mean i'm still still gone so yeah i mean i do see horses
behind you as an it's like a few palominos we've got decorating the walls the midwest is crazy
where are you right now i'm actually i have a flight leaving lexington so i'm in kentucky
actually right now oh my god hi hi but i'm going to i was going to go to lexington this weekend
oh really no this was just this was just the cheapest flight last minute so i had to end up
no wonder there's horses behind you're literally an hour away from me this is terrifying am i i
actually don't know how far away i am
yeah you are literally like an hour from me that's crazy no i spent way too long in indianapolis and
then i ended up in um uh oh i ended up in santa claus indiana ah yes love that for you no
devastating blow everybody i have wanted and i've said this for a very long time my dream was to go
holiday world yeah which is in santa claus indiana so my intention the only reason i even went through
indiana at all was to end up in santa claus would you it's my own fault i just assumed that theme
parks are open every single day and um apparently holiday world is only open every single day in
june and july and it's september and i drove all the effing way through all of indiana didn't the
google maps say like warning closed no because i kept doing a lot of
like what i did like last night like a lot of midnight driving and so everything's closed
because i'm like doofus oh it's midnight driving that's because i'm just i'm trying to do as much
as possible during the day and then i drive in the all night long and then i get there and like
sleep for a couple hours in a hotel and then just like keep it going so that's what happened last
night i was like at the anyway so i literally as i'm leaving i got here you're this is how crazy
i am this is how little time i have here i was like what are some good questions and i'm like
what are some good coffee shops i have to do something touristy while i'm in lexington
and i ended up going to all these coffee shops this morning i woke up at 7 a.m this time here
just so i could go do something and i the only thing that's open is breakfast and coffee shops
so i did like a flight i went to like four different coffee shops and tried every single
one of their drinks yeah which one was your favorite well i haven't tried two of them yet
i want to wait for you this weekend i'm going there this weekend i've never i've
the only time i ever went to lexington i have a friend visiting from out of town and so i'm going
there this weekend it's not you can you imagine it's not me or maybe it is i'm confused i don't
know but um i was gonna go down there at some point this weekend and i never go down there
i've been to louisville a few times but um lexington is where i got my covid shot back
in the day oh really so that's my like only experience was going to to lexington for that
but so i don't really know much about it anyway let me well i'm trying to look at like like i
didn't i didn't get to do anything while i'm here the i the only things i've done here are things
that were road trip accessible so like there's um a water tower here that looks like a dixie cup
so i drove past that and took a picture of it like it's like things like that like i didn't
get to go into like any shops or anything so um you'll have to let me know how it goes but
there is a castle here that you can have a drink at and have so i that was like i kept trying to
find things that that were stops along the way and so i was like oh my god i'm gonna go to lexington
oh there's a fucking castle i'm gonna go in that castle and then i went on the roof it was fun
oh of the castle exciting were there turrets yes there were many oh fantastic you'll love it and
it actually was very i think you would actually really like it and i think you can like reserve
reservations to get dinner there castle lexington i think it's the kentucky castle
oh how exciting for me i didn't know that such a thing existed anyway that was on the way in but
then i just took a fat sleep and then i woke up and i was like i have to go do something to say i
did something in lexington
so one of the coffee shops i went to oh the cup doesn't have a name i like when the cup has a name
but this stripping everywhere this is called i wrote down in case you want to go i do
uh oh my god what's it called help me oh you know what you'll like because it was open it was open
when i got here and it was really quiet i imagine during the day it'd be even cooler you should
write this down the kentucky native cafe okay that oh wait i think i know about them it's like
all outdoorsy with icicle lights and everything but there's like it's also it's also part like
plant shop greenhouse and so everything's outdoors but very lush and beautiful um and they have
really good menu but by the time i was there the i couldn't get any food but whatever it looked good
um anyway you should go there and then this coffee that i'm currently holding
miss drippy is a cup of commonwealth and they have a wall full of um like those
coffee holders like coffee like the brown thing like the sleeves the sleeves and every sleeve
up there is a pre-paid coffee in case someone like wants coffee and can't pay for it that day
that's nice and then this one i went to i'm gonna wipe it off so i can get it close to the camera
it's called caffeine's but like fiends like enemies and it's got a little alien on it
caffeine a fiend for caffeine oh the alien i like that's literally oh my god you do have a whole
flight situation those are two of them and then i also went to one that um oh my god what was that
called i have a picture of it um oh it's called the old school coffee and it literally looks like
a one-room schoolhouse on the outside
you're gonna i feel like i need to you're gonna have to send me these because i tried to write
them down but now i'm just like writing words like castle and schoolhouse and it's not gonna
make any sense when i do this later and i'm like help to my friend like who's not from kentucky
you know i'll be like help me find the castle no and then they also have something i'm really
hoping if we if we finish in time i'm trying to gonna gonna try to sneak it into uh before
the airport they've got it's called the toy headquarters and apparently that's just like
all these like it's like a vintage toy mall or something that sounds scary
really that sounds well it feels like it's gonna have like talking dolls and stuff
oh it probably will you know what i mean like the defunct furbies yes precisely i have to tell you
one more thing i feel bad i need to let me ask you a question and you do you oh my god riff
something because i have something i want to talk about but i'm i don't want to over speak
just listen okay what do you what do you want me to talk i i can yap what do you want me to yap
about oh i got a green juice that's exciting i'm trying to get more fiber in my diet does that help
sure yeah what's in that
i have no fucking clue kale or something um
uh i have really nothing exciting to report except that i will be going to lexington soon
probably so that's so we'll do like a bookend tour here we'll do you start it i finish it
uh for like two days we'll just you know yeah that would be very fun it is random
very fun because we have such different interests when we travel yes i i think um i mean until you
said castle and all that other and coffee but you know we have a lot of fun we have a lot of
overlap but i think we travel very differently and i i would be interested i'm not waking up at
7 a.m for sure that's for sure i would be interested to go travel to a town and then you go
and then we like talk about our like very opposite experiences there because part of me is like oh i
have all these things to recommend to people but then i'm like i i feel like half the people i
know wouldn't want any of these things like now i don't drink anymore so it's like i literally
i'm a different like i feel like i'm a different person because it's like i don't just go to bars
or like get drunk and then like sleep in you know i mean i that's true but i went to a castle and
got a drink like you just gotta get the right drink and that's what i'm saying i think i might
be more your style of traveler now that i don't drink you know what i mean like because it's like
oh i'm more intrigued by like mocktails that's already putting me in such a big m camp that i
can barely breathe and then like the milkshake situation is off the chain like what's happening
you know it's like this is all just going topsy-turvy world so i can for sure say that like
we may have more overlap in
washington kentucky than we believe i will say i wonder what that well i can't even say i wonder
because like isn't this like bourbon town i feel like half it almost is like a relief in some ways
as a non-drinker they're like oh well half the attractions i don't even have to think about
doing those because they're not for me and then i feel like that is what my friend is so much more
for is the bourbon trail stuff and i was like i'm gonna be just like not doing that part
soda city soda yeah yay uh dirty soda so it's gonna be you know
it'll be fun but well i that's why i also go to so many speakeasies because i'm like if i can't
drink it better at least look cool you know the aesthetic better at least be enjoyable yeah which
there are a few speakeasies out here so love it you'll have a good time i love kentucky man i love
it here there's um oh this is what i wanted to tell you so the things that i spent most of my time
in michigan and indiana this is just like a pass-through situation but in indiana
no in michigan i've told you before there is a town
called hell yes of course i know about hell do you know about their mayoral program
wait didn't you tell me this yeah you can be mayor for a day
like they have an honorary mayor every day oh you are insane what did you do
mayoral proclamation you are out of your mind i i knew something fell off on september 5th 2026
and then immediately immediately after they
do the ceremony because there's a ceremony of course um after they do that they then impeach you
so here's my impeachment papers you get an impeachment that's insane certificate of
impeachment and then they also give you a non-warranty deed what the i don't know what
that's for but i love i love that it feels so official i feel like mom donnie and then
there's they also give you oh a
soil analysis because one part of your part of the program is then they then gift you they
like with a little vial go out into the dirt scoop out dirt and you get dirt from hell
and they give you a soil analysis which i'm sure is fake but it's fun to have so strange
and then you get a shirt and the shirt says i'm the mayor but then it's like crossed out
and then uh what else this is like michigan is weird and let me tell you the entire town of hell
which i've already discussed this before but now as someone who's been there the entire thing is
just an ice cream shop called the crematorium obviously then there's good a gift shop there's
a mini golf course and there's a bar called the hell saloon and every time you walk in somewhere
they go welcome to hell it literally feels like we made this on the sims it feels yeah like so
i just needed to tell you that you're now speaking oh and they give you a badge
oh god and when you become mayor they write your name on the sign outside that says welcome to hell
and then hell's mayor and then you get a badge and then you get a badge and then you get a badge
the mayor of the day is it was pretty cool that's pretty sick i'm just i'm proud of you
thank you what an accomplishment i have said it for years i knew i'd be mayor one day and i was
literally mayor i felt it i swear to god i felt it you could probably read my journal i'd be like
something's off something's very wrong all of a sudden your eyes did this
a shift a shift in the atmosphere anyway i was very excited about that i needed to tell you
that i wow you're speaking to a former mayor please wow and in my own commonwealth at the
how exciting yeah for you to grace my commonwealth with your presence not my jurisdiction but you
know they got good got good tea at the alien store whatever this is sody pop yeah yeah anyway that's
what i wanted to talk about that's the reason why i drink i am i in a good way because i was the
mayor in a bad way because i've been impeached it's really embarrassing i don't want to talk about it
um why do you yeah i want to talk about it but that's okay we can save that for like
um why do i drink oh god um probably because you became mayor for a day and i i that's literally so
scary just you know i thought of you at um in hell thank you i did think of you in hell because i was
like this wait that's actually like a nice postcard they should sell yeah greetings from
hell they probably do sell that i'm sure they have a they have a shirt that says um my friend
my friend went to hell and all i got was a lousy shirt you know of course of course they had all
all the things for for babies there's a shirt that says i went to heck because like they can't
say hell or something double hockey sticks that's very fun um this is like the time i went to weed
california and like there's a whole store just like called like weed california and it was like
license plates weed and like it was just very silly it was like they leaned into it that was
on the way to mount shasta fun i um no i was gonna say i was thinking of you in not indianapolis
where else was i i think it was in i don't know anymore it was indiana by the way indiana has
you know like the old drive-in restaurants that you see in the movies where people would like
drive up to the the restaurant and they and they put like the little like tray on your window and
everything indiana's alive and well with those i went to i went to a few of those and literally
live 15 minutes from indiana i have no fucking clue i've never been there my whole life that's
not true i've been there a lot but i don't know anything about it i'm telling you it was so cool
but i i was thinking of you when i went to indiana and i was like oh my god i'm gonna go to indiana
to um uh there was a drive-in movie and it i don't know what they had like all the old little
cartoons playing before and everything but it was a horror movie in the middle of a cornfield
at like 11 o'clock at night see this is why they're like nothing good happens in indiana
because of this very reason i don't know i thought about you thank you for thinking of
me during that is hell that's my hell it made me think of when we were trying to watch sinister
you recall when i went trying is really a strong word
you recall is also a strong word because i don't recall either
anyway that was that's enough talking about the trip but i've just been all
over the place but there's been a few spots that made me think of you and anyway zip zap zooming
around man and now you're an hour from me and you're like oh hi and there's horses on the wall
it's so exciting it's that welcome to my commonwealth you guys are not playing around
with the horses over here that's that's not up in my neck of the woods we don't really care about
horses up here that's more like your area where you are so i always forget that's a thing until
i kind of like venture further south and then i go what the hell with the horses but what
everything's a horse what hay is for horses and that's all she wrote sorry i just died for a
second that happened to me earlier when i was singing well speaking of uh horses i'm a little
disappointed in my story because i was really shooting for speaking of the ambience i wanted
to give you what you love the most which is a cowboy story and a cowboy's featured and then i
went great and i started doing all these notes and by the end of the day i was like oh my god
i was like where the fuck is this cowboy he makes just a brief appearance but he is there just my
heart just know the intention was that this was going to be a cowboy story for you i will swoon
about it either way even if he's only mentioned briefly perfect okay that's the energy i want
i like never thought i was like a shaving person because it always bothers me to shave
but then flamingo sent like their little kit with their little silky shave cream and i was like okay
i actually like shaving again sort of tell them about your games tell us i got a

so this is a restaurant with a very silly silly name this is in indianapolis and i drove past it
and i went what the hell is that about and then i looked it up and it said haunted
then it said cowboy and i went you see how it how it happened so and then you had the audacity to
think about me in a cornfield watching a horror movie it's shocking how many times you got brought
up in my mind in a cornfield while i was watching a horror movie it's really i really hate that about
me and i love that about me you know so it's kind of like saying i'm learning to live with
very incessant i don't i you don't even mean to be pop in uh this is uh a restaurant that
everyone in indianapolis will know because of its name by me saying that alone you probably
know what i'm going to say this is the slippery noodle inn please what
which is different than the old spaghetti factory because i thought for sure they were cousins it
feels like a simpsons joke about the old spaghetti factory yes it feels like like a tv like we're
making a joke about yeah like a greek version like a like a no license to the name so the
slippery noodle inn it is a live blues club where they play blues music music seven days a week
it is indianapolis's oldest bar and it is because i say it every time it's
on the national register of historic places um we start in 1850 and it was originally a tavern
called the tremont house which i'm so over it say it with me everybody this was supposed to be
a house for all the people coming off the railroad whenever they would travel this was
supposed to be like a big stop for all the people getting off the train the who's who yeah from the
choo-choo
you
, fun fact this building we just talked about ghost signs a while ago which is the
apparently official name of like when an old business is still painted and my favorite things
on the side of a building and it's really distressed and clearly that building's been
out for a long time but everyone's like respected the the sign and never touched it
there is a ghost sign on the side of the slippery noodle inn that still says the tremont house
i wish i said slippery noodle because a ghost sign that says
slippery noodle would be something honestly if i ever saw a distressed old vintage i mean slippery
noodle though that feels like one of those like 1800 slangs like oh she's a slippery noodle oh i
got a slippery noodle you know what i mean grandpa you can't say that in mixed company yeah like you
know it's something gross yeah for sure um so it was the tremont inn then uh or tremont house and
since that name it's had many other names only 10 years later it was called the concordia house
during the world war one era
it was called the germania germania house um which i this is the stupidest thing i've ever
thought in my life but i thought it last night and had a chuckle and i thought you should hear it
please share with the class i'm so stupid i it just hit me for the first time that like
during world war one they weren't calling it world war one because they didn't know there'd
be a world war two i know that's stupid i know i know i mean it's not stupid it's true i mean it's
that if i went back and said oh world war one they'd go what do you mean one i think they called
it the great war because it was like the first world war pretty great yeah yeah it was pretty
great times and so yeah you're right about that world war one too that was like the first thing i
asked in class i've got i remember being like but then what did they call it before you know because
i remember immediately having that same thought um imagine going to someone in the 40s and going
oh world war one and they're like what you know the 40s they're probably already like shit yeah
well we're in the thick of it i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know
but yeah you're right i feel like that must be distressing wait a minute we just finished the
first one oh god you know when world war ii started they were like again not again i'm so tired um
that seems like what pretty accurate to what they experienced yeah that's how i'd be i'd be like
please not again i'm so i mean yeah i'm i feel like they probably aged out by that point but
still they were probably like please not again um okay so it's called the germania germania house
then it was called beck saloon
i didn't understand this but it sounds like because we were trying to eventually step away
from like germans like they were like we don't want that name anymore after two of these wars
they're like all right sure sure uh so then they change it to beck saloon keeping it safe
then they changed it some new guy named more bought it so it became more's beer tavern what
i like about more is that it was a beer tavern before during and after prohibition but during
probation obviously he couldn't promote that it was a beer tavern so he just changed it to
more's restaurant so in the middle it was called more's restaurant but they were still making beer
down the basement the 1940s come around it's called boris's place and then in the 1960s the
the family we're gonna you mainly have to care about uh the ye ye yeergy family i'm gonna go by
their first names uh yeegy family i think how do you spell that y yeegy family i think y yeegy family
e-a-g-y oh yeegy maybe yeegy um they bought it in the 60s on a friday the 13th
ooh ooh la la and they wanted this place to be a luncheonette it was uh mom dad and some brothers
i don't think there were any sisters and the whole family at different points all worked at this place
so the parents owned it the brothers helped out they grew up and then the younger brothers helped
out so it's like and sons like when you see like plumbers with like and yes and you're always like
i wonder what happened to the daughters literally okay there's uh i just saw a store recently like
on my travels that said like like polymer and so i don't know something like paul palmer maybe
and daughters yeah i don't know it's daughters that's and daughters and i went
look at that finally i have found an and cousins which is interesting
cousins is cool what about like ungrateful step kids you know you could get really creative with
it and deadbeat dad yeah yeah you can get really creative with it oh i love it in my family i could
say like and third stepfather's second stepson's yeah yeah yeah girlfriend's brother yeah and like
how catchy is that it's like we're the brady bunch over here yeah yeah yeah yeah so okay they wanted
to be a luncheonette and they wanted the whole family to run it at different times and the first
of the yigi yegi family was harold and his wife lauren harold uh i don't know a lot about him but
what i do know is interesting he did a uso tour because he wanted to go fight but he couldn't so
then he ended up being part of like the entertainment acts and he did comedy over
okay that's what they say when you can't get into the military you turn to comedy
so we did those who can't do teach and those who can't go to the war make them laugh those who can't
- I can't do anything.
- Yeah.
- So--
morale a little bit yeah exactly they were like you're the heart planeteer you know
so anyway he was doing comedy eventually he comes back over and him and his wife buy this place
uh later his son hal would take over and hal did a really interesting interview a while ago
where it was the only it was the only place where i really saw him talking about like how they even
got the building and all that but when they asked why it was named the slippery noodle in obviously
like the first question you fucking ask he was like well it was called boris's place after the
owner boris and my dad didn't want to call it that anymore but he also didn't want to call it harold's
place um and it's like that there should there has to simply be more there can't be only one
option in between there can't be only one name that lands like it can't be the first thing you
think about like somebody should have said good start
we can circle back to that so not boris's place not harold's place slippery noodle okay there's
only one other option so that's what i thought what i learned later when looking back in my
notes is that i'd accidentally deleted the rest of his sentence so oh there is an actual reason
but i didn't know at the time and i was like that can't be his fucking answer no that can't be it
so i ended up reopening the link and i went oh there it is so they uh it was boris's place he
didn't want to call it harold's place
so then the whole family got together and started just shouting out random names
and i guess part of his uso comedy bit he had like a joke that he
regularly told the family about the slippery noodle and it does feel like a dad joke it does
oh the slippery noodle look out for the slippery noodle god so but he and for some reason this is
just like an extra quirk to him he just always wanted to own something that said in in it like
the inn and so he just wanted to own something that said in in it like the inn and so he just
who doesn't together he just loved it i love this it's like what do i want i want to like memorialize
my joke yeah and have an inn at the same time i will tell you apparently the joke it was in this
interview it's not even a joke it's like it's like a catchphrase but it's like a dad catchphrase
and that he says it and we all probably go okay and then like yeah if it's your friends if it's
your friend's dad when when he goes to the bathroom you look at your friend you're like what did he say
you're like i'm gonna make him say it again your friend's like no okay so i'm gonna say it but i
want you to know like if you don't laugh that's probably normal um okay okay and if i laugh i'll
probably show how not normal i fucking am freaking freak yeah yeah okay so this was the catchphrase
hit me with it i'm so embarrassed to even do this slippery noodle once you heard it you know you'd
remember it
like a
the internet literally cut out and like your entire you like your entire thing just went
and garbled and i thought i think that's for the best the internet went we'll we'll help you out
the hotel in lexington was like actually we don't approve any of this thank you so what basically
the internet just said fuck you say it twice so here we go now i have to hear it again but i only
heard okay say it again say it all again the fact that you didn't when you were silent i was like
okay that meant i like killed so sorry i was just waiting for
you to return to the land of the living but um i'm ready for it again hit me okay this was the
catchphrase slippery noodle once you heard it you know you'd remember it
really i would have fucking i would have been so rich in that time you and i could have just
done anything we fucking wanted we would have ruled we would have ruled the u.s
the first time any soldier actually would have heard an actual joke they would have gone now
that's funny now what the fuck is this now this is what i've been waiting for i feel like this
was at a time when like i feel like in the 40s no one had belly laughs i feel like a good solid
laugh for them was in fact ha ha ha you know yeah you know what we would have to get really deep
we'd have to be like have you heard about this world war ii thing and they'd be like what and
we'd be like we're just now it's funny um you'll get it someday but i feel like they're like i feel
like laughing back then in my mind like was not hearty enough so that maybe was like the best joke
they'd ever heard because they they reacted period but i feel like i mean if they knew the lengths
they could go in laughter where they're like crying and like on the floor doubled over they'd
look at that sentence and go i wonder though if like that's why it's so funny because it's just
so fucking you're like in the middle of the of the
fucking pacific theater and you're just trying to survive and get home to your beloved violet
and then like meanwhile there's this fuck-ass guy who's like i named my restaurant after this joke
and he says it and you're like i literally like it's so absurd that maybe it's funny you know
he's like dude i'm at war like please i'm literally gonna die tomorrow thank you though
for the great belly laugh um or maybe i mean maybe it was like you're saying like you know
when you're it's like you can either laugh or cry
and like you're in the middle of a war zone it couldn't get worse i guess get worse this is
better than anything else i don't know right right right right yeah you and i would have
fucking mopped the floor i think so too you know who um does belly laugh for sure though it has to
be his sons who every time he says it they're like what the fuck are you saying dad they're
like you can't keep bringing this up at dinnertime and then writing it on the wall of our business
please stop saying that at the least don't spray paint it on the wall yeah so anyway how about
anyway
everyone your homework tonight is to go to your family without warning just go
slippery noodle once you heard it you know you'd remember it and see what they do
it feels so right because it makes no fucking sense it feels so right i mean i feel like people
would go yep i will remember this because what the fuck is exactly and like he's not wrong that's
the craziest part oh he must love that he's certainly passed now but like can you like he's
a great time knowing that we're surely the one who made you say it twice unplugging the router
earlier oh he's absolutely he was the one doing that so anyway that's how it got its name is this
family bought it in the 60s to have a family luncheonette and he used to be in common here
we're still trying out comedy i guess and it's so good i'm so yeah i'm shocked maybe comedy clubs
weren't a thing yet but i'm shocked they didn't have like an open mic every monday night or
something with the way that he's trying out kind of yeah i feel like he would have just been the
like the only one who would have been the only one who would have been the only one who would have
been the only one kind of on the open mic and then it'd be like dad go home please like a
closed mic it's just for him no one's coming in anymore um right i don't know maybe he was
hysterical for all i know this was like a famous man i could be honest it made me laugh pretty
darn hard okay perfect so 20 25 years go by where they're all having a great time running this place
together but then in the 80s uh harold passes away and his wife is now opening is working at the place
by herself so um hal who was the owner that did this interview he steps in to help his mom out he
buys the place and starts running it but he really liked music and wanted to incorporate music into
the place so he started uh his first big decision was we're gonna stay open way later just so
like the night scene will come in here instead of us just being a luncheonette
and um i guess this was around the time when indianapolis was starting to have some sort of
night scene
so he was like we gotta be one of the first ones doing this and yeah so he uh started this thing
called blues jam where i guess people could just come in and start jamming as sweet play blues
music and originally it was actually called like the blue blues collar like a play on blue collar
him and his dad are way too fucking similar and yeah clearly they run yeah yeah yeah the jeans
are strong but
it was supposed to be like everybody that works like a nine to five they could then come here
right at five at the end of their shift and it'd be like all the blue blue colored people
yeah listening to blues music and they were like why blues music and he was like i just like it
so that's how we got a blues i guess he wanted an in and he liked blues music there you go
and i mean you'll never once you heard it you'll always remember it that's right so that's right
basically it became such a popular music night space that like famous famous famous musicians
from all over started coming there just to listen not even perform they were just they
just wanted to be with everybody and listen to music and it became very normal i guess to just
see just like celebrities just wearing like a t-shirt and jeans like having a beer listening
to other big calls yeah and he said like back in the day because there wasn't social media so people
wouldn't find out right away that something was wrong and he said like i don't know i don't know
had been there he was saying like i always knew that um like there was clearly a celebrity in the
crowd when all of a sudden everyone started rushing to the payphone because everyone wanted
to be the first person to tell their friends like guess who's here mom guess who's here
the slippery noodle himself um guy remember we saw him in the pacific theater and then there was um
this uh uh he all i guess some of the musicians when they were there they would like get so
like stoked about the music and hyped up but that they would also want to play and sometimes they
would just go around the bar and like talk to him be like can i just go up there and start playing
and they would just do free concerts
that's sick there was even one time where one of the Allman brothers I guess he had a show there
he was supposed to be doing like a paid event there the next night but he went in the night
before just to listen to music and while he was there got so into the music that he asked if he
could just perform a free version of the concert the night before imagine being there the night
before and getting the free version instead of like pay for a ticket you're like man that yeah
that's wild that's so cool here she comes and look they turn pink in the light oh my god the

dot com slash podcast promo code podcast 15 one of his favorite stories how one of his
favorite stories was that I guess a governor's conference was gonna come into town and they
wanted to have their event there because they'd heard how big the spot was or how happening it
was and he ended up having to have conversations with like secret service and everything they had
to bring in bomb dogs and this is uh one of his favorite stories is that while the secret service
was there canvassing his slippery noodle in um gene simmons from kiss randomly rolled up to like
go to the bar to hear music and then he
got there and realized that like the secret service was everywhere and he I guess he didn't
understand that like hey we're closed for the night to the public this isn't like we're not
playing music tonight for you guys um I think he didn't know that like he should turn around and
walk away or like it didn't occur to him because he said like no you don't understand I'm gene
simmons from kiss like here to listen to music and secret service was so stoked to meet gene
simmons that they like ran his id and he was like oh my god I'm gonna go to the bar and I'm gonna
and let him come in to the private event but then gene simmons didn't have anything to do because no
music was playing so he was just sitting there in the corner fuck it gene simmons is an asshole
very weird I don't know I don't know anything about him but I'm not surprised if he's seeing
the secret service and he still thinks he can go up and say I'm gene simmons I've just I've just
he's one of my la encounters where I go what did he do just no he's just a like my brother just
worked in for it's for somebody that was very close with him and in the music
industry and the like amount of just gross well I'm not surprised after this story
I have heard well I'm not gonna say it but there I've I've heard of some people that
I thought for sure were lovely and then I find out like oh they're monsters and I'm like oh my god
yeah not that he really gave a lovely vibe but no no he's not yeah no it's not um anyway so
that was just one of his celebrity moments that like he was like there's
just secret service squad bomb dogs and gene simmons sitting in my I mean my again my hell
my hell yeah it feels like a dream um it feels like a bad dream yes so since this time many
people still come through and and hang out here that are famous but you know with social media
it's a lot they don't stay for as long when hal took over the building from his dad or after his
parent his dad passed he began renovating the place and turned some of the areas back into
their original look this
includes the second floor that used to be way before it was a bar back this is more like in
like the prohibition era uh it was a bordello upstairs uh so he turned the upstairs rooms
back into a bordello I'm assuming he was trying to make this um back into like a hotel kind of
vibe and he wanted to look like it did for people like gene simmons for gene simmons who wants to
see what a bordello looked like do you know who I am yeah and uh one uh
of the rooms I guess even still has like a stash spot hidden inside the floor
back during like like just to keep with the fun of it all that um so yeah during prohibition this
was a bordello just to keep more money coming through when they were struggling a little bit
even after the prohibition uh ended the bordello stuck around until 1953 and it only ended because
two men ended up fighting over a woman and one of the men stabbed the other and then walked out
leaving the room and then the other men stabbed the other and then walked out leaving the room
the bloody knife on the bar oh my god yeah huh which is so like tony soprano of like yeah here's
all my here's my fucking bloody knife and I don't even care if you see it this is yeah signature
sign off like what the fuck um other than it being a bordello it was also um a slaughterhouse they
were doing a lot to just bring extra money and I guess and all of it was extra ghosts and bad
energy into the building yeah absolutely
upstairs is the bordello then there's the restaurant that's definitely still a bar
downstairs in the basement is where they're making the beer and also in that space is a
slaughterhouse that like the fda would not approve no and the umbrella over it all is
slippery noodle yeah honestly it probably looks so ridiculous that no one even paid
attention on paper they're like that can't be real the absurdity of it it just yeah it skips
skips over the details so also during the prohibition time this became a big place for
some to be able to do something about it and I think it's a really good idea to do something about
various groups as you can imagine including john dilliger and his gang so they're actually still
in one of the concert music areas and like the the venue area of this building there are still
bullet holes in the wall oh my god from when john dilliger was there and it seems unclear what these
bullet holes were from some people calling card yeah some people think a person might have been
shot there but there's other articles that told me that um the manager at the time let
them use that wall as target practice he's like just put a few bullets in so we can like market
this for future people to say look at this bullet hole left by yeah the cops I'm already trying to
hide my business from definitely make gunshot noises point true point maybe put some holes in
the wall yeah I can point but it really is a selling point now I wonder if it was just to
like keep them happy while he was like so they wouldn't hurt his business or something shoot the
walls it's like you could shoot him it's fine but so we don't totally know what the bullet holes are
from but we know john
dillinger and his friends are responsible that's cool on top of it being a bordello a speakeasy a
slaughterhouse a future luncheonette it was also a um a stop on the undergrad railroad because it
was so close to that railroad right um there are still openings in the foundations and walls of
the building that have slowly gotten smaller I think like it's like the the structure of the
building that they would hide um and I'm pretty sure this is confirmed that it was a stop on the
underground railroad but I saw one article that seemed skeptical of that so I'm just gonna put
that in the air but um it seems to be established as it was a stop on the underground railroad um
it was also a civil war barracks so you know oh boy yeah it's really covering all the bases huh
and it said that people might be buried under the basement so I was like here we go let's see
there's also burial plot let's let's go and I'm like oh my god I'm like oh my god I'm like oh my
what's next yep so a lot of reasons for there to be ghosts a lot of people lived here died here
had bad memories here um and then slap a slippery noodle stick joke on it and like you're no wonder
the ghosts are all riled up it went from haunted to hexed I think if you say slippery noodle in
enough then it's like beetle juice you know what else would happen um yeah bad stuff so one of the
main ghosts is a woman named sarah the I think the restaurant named her sarah um but she
is a woman seen on the second floor it's assumed that she was a sex worker she looks like she's in
solid form to some people to others it's more of a shadow but people swear that she looks like a
standing up there and that is a closed off space so which I'm confused why maybe they just never
went through on turning it into a full-blown hotel and that was initially the plan but why
did they spend any time redoing the second floor and turning it back into its original state to not
do something with it
maybe they use it as like offices or something it should they just use it as offices but it feels
like why would you go through all the redecorating and renovating I mean just I mean store things in
there I don't know I don't know so anyway people see sarah up there they know it's that people
aren't supposed to be up there so when they see her they're freaked out for sure she appears to
staff and visitors but one time during a paranormal investigation she allegedly
was channeled through somebody on that tour
and said that she was the madam of the bordello not
not just a sex worker she's like hold on a minute i need to set the record straight let me let me
jump in your body for a second i need your hbic let's be clear yeah let's not fuck around um other
shadows of women are seen on the second floor um and i do wonder if that's if that's always been
that way or if it's because they renovated things to look like they used to and that might have
brought some energy back i was one i was gonna say that too like maybe that's what inspired the
return yeah yeah um the doors also are known to open and close when men go up there and one
article said like the women clearly don't like the men being in their space and i was like i think
they're doing their job i think they're letting that into the bedrooms like okay come on right
like that's what it would have been doing yeah totally so that's sarah and the girls upstairs
then there's george who i also think was named by the staff but he was somebody who used to tend to
the property he's
you
is seen uh mainly by utility and delivery men who have to go into the basement to get access and
like drop things off sucks and it's been like a common thing that they will go down there and
see a man just standing there it's like not cool to be that guy at the overalls like give him give
him a break they're just trying to do their job literally like there have been delivery men who
have said like take me off the schedule like i'm not
really i don't want to be back here no i don't blame you i wouldn't want to i'd at least be like
buddy system hell no so um also in the basement uh sadly it seems that there might be spirits down
here that are of formerly enslaved people um because this might have been where they were
hiding at some point when on their way to the railroad and the basement in general is said to
be really creepy but that could also be a thing that's been going on for a long time and i think
could also just be like the heaviness of that situation people say that they hear whispers down
there which would make sense if people are whispering and trying to keep quiet down there
um but people have also just said it just feels too creepy some of some employees just don't even
go down there there's like we've talked about this but like a basement's already you know and
then you give it all that lore and like actual history and it's like well you know i think i'll
pass sorry your microphone like made a crazy sound and i just like really jump back yeah
ew it's weird because as i said i'm not going to go down there and i'm not going to go down there
because i was talking i was thinking of my own basement and like picturing it because i was
thinking like oh the second you have a creepy basement and you add lore or like history real
history to it it's like no thanks um yeah no it's your basement is straight out of michigan's hell
you know what i'm saying yeah i could give you a soil sample from down there i've been down there
my shoes it's probably still in your lungs from being down there that place is like truly like
oh and then m has the audacity to go
hey ghost do you like christine living in your house do you like the baby living in your house
and they was like going no and i was like m you are opening a can of worms you better close it
my bad my bad no it's good because i immediately jumped in and said
i love it here and you're awesome and everything's fine and eva did some um meddling and we were all
good i stand by it that like you could make so much money in your town i mean i'm not going to
say where you are but i'm not going to say where you are but i'm not going to say where you are
but you are in an area that you know people would absolutely gravitate towards your place if you
decide to turn your basement into a actual speakeasy i just feel like i don't have a good
enough joke an absurd enough joke to make to name it after oh that's a lie i have 80 000 but also i
feel like that would require all sorts of all sorts of permits and things that i have no business
trying to get i know and i know you don't even drink anymore so like you wouldn't even have like
the fun of it as i'm doing it i'm not going to do it i'm not going to do it i'm not going to do it
in my house i don't want drugs in my basement you know i'm telling you though like the vibe
you'll never you'll never see a vibe like that anywhere else you will it's just a dirty kentucky
basement it's called a cellar it's like in la that's like such an aesthetic i mean fair and
also like the house itself is from a time where you can go down there and see like the original
water cistern and like where the coal chute was so it is cool in that way but it is very spooky
but you're right like but it's also like just dirt floor and then it's like it's like it's like
so humid because when it rains so it's also like gross and like dirty just like it was back in the
day just i know i know but apparently they did they were buried beer cap because we did a little
metal detecting down there once where did we post we posted that to patreon i think ages ago but
um i just kept finding bottle caps and then that one guy who passed me in the garage like a specter
was like i lived there have you seen the old woman and i'm like trying to buckle my infant
into the car seat like hello and he's like she pushed me down the stairs my
father used to have a speakeasy in the basement and i'm like i'm telling you yeah yeah the father
had not the worst idea um yeah just know like if you did it if you're wondering if it would sell
like hotcakes my friend i'm telling you okay i mean listen you're in kentucky right now so like
you want to drive up and start vacuuming all the dirt out of the dirt floor at 3 a.m we both know
i would do a killer i know i was gonna say actually you could stop at menards get a few
tarps we could really now it sounds like we could stop at menards we could really stop at menards
sounds like dexter but you know it'll be fine speaking of like a place to kill people like
another great idea for your basement that would be an excellent thing to put on the airwaves yes
what an excellent alternative plan don't kill anybody a bar in the basement will do a murder
scene instead something spooky has to or already has or both uh definitely no doubt so also to
confirm the rumors that this basement might have people buried under the ground not that a i don't
i mean confirmed for some people a psychic went down there and act without knowing that information
i think um saw a hand sticking out of the floor which what yuck like they like saw like i'm seeing
a hand sticking out of the floor so i'm assuming that that solidified it for some people people
also hear footsteps voices they get touched um people um oh i sorry i had to i had to leave this
last of course your your your ghost your cowboy so where is he uh he this is very short i'm so
sorry how brief this is they really sucked me in by saying ghost cowboy and then fucking
nothing else that's what they do they do it to me all the time don't worry i'm used to it
i mean it is a very cowboy thing to just like leave me right when it gets good i know man that's
why uh but there is the ghost of a cowboy or cowboy looking man uh walking around
and then vanishing which i guess if you're in indiana everyone's kind of wearing boots anyway
so i guess you're a cowboy looking here's my thing because there's a lot of college kids i'd
rather see a cowboy you know here's my thing yeah they say the rumor is that like oh this cowboy
this is one of the guys that was in that fight where someone stabbed the other and then left
the bloody knife on the bar sure sure sure they say that like oh he might be the one that died
or he might have done the stabbing but also that happened in 1953 and i don't
equate cowboys with 1953 so i i don't know yeah if he matches the vibe he would match
more of a vibe in your basement i think yeah i mean he's welcome if he's uh has something
if he doesn't have plans later but um m and i will be putting a tarp down so he doesn't have
to worry about anything about him and his spurs will be just fine so yeah just clomping around
well during the pandemic the yigi yegi family started hosting ghost tours they'd already been
for a long time but they ended up now doing ghost tours on these ghost tours people did get access
to the bordello area and the basement which are usually closed off to the public um and the guy
that was hosting it was hal's son so that makes three generations of yegis working there and they
got a lot of cool evidence from investigators that visited but the ghost tours ended pretty
quickly because it started around covid and then it ended in 2023 because the yegi family finally
sold the building um to new owners who seem according to one article very disinterested in
the ghost element of the business um indianapolis monthly was doing an article and reached out to
them for an interview and they declined to comment on if the place was haunted or not
well that'll tell you other than that i know but also that's also so mysterious i'm like oh
yeah they're like we decline comment yeah okay so like it must be a yes
like usually like i think if they were like is it haunted they'd be like no it's not really haunted
you know oh that's true but to say like no comment it's like what are you hiding yeah yeah yeah or
even if it's not haunted thank you for keeping the the fun alive yeah i appreciate that even if
they're like we don't want the fun it's not haunted please stop talking to us thank you for
at least letting me believe it but other than that they said that they at least in the past they've
said they don't plan on changing much to the building or anything like that everything still looks the same
is the same the name's the same uh which like can you imagine buying the slippery noodle in and
changing the name back to boris's place like are you fucking kidding me i mean are you fucking
kidding me like susan's cafe like no yeah no enough so other than that everything is still
you know the same there it's worth checking out and i drove past it i remember driving past because
of the name obviously and i remember thinking i should go in there and then i didn't even think
about it again until i googled it when i was already driving away so i'm glad you googled it though i'm
glad you knew it was important enough to google i mean the name something something hit me in my
spirit and i thought it was come on and have a drink but it was actually report this for the
next episode so
um i'll take it it was me popping in saying hello cowboy tell me about it anyway i wish i had more
about the cowboy that was like my big i was like oh it's a crazy name i'll definitely look it up
and then i saw cowboy and i did all these notes and then by the end i went where the fuck's that
cowboy i've got an active imagination it's okay yeah you do what you need to do with that um thank
you but that's the slippery noodle in the sni i love the sni and i love that uh we got an indiana
story now you're in kentucky and i'm here in kentucky we're in this little like pocket of
the midwest um we call it here the tri-state which is embarrassing because then i moved to
big cities and they were like no like new york city is the tri-state and i was like no indianapolis
or no indiana ohio and and kentucky are the tri-state and people were like girl
last night i got in i don't remember when i i was i got in at a time when only
bars were open to give you some insight
you know what's funny last night i got in i don't remember when i i was i got in at a time when only bars were open to give you some insight
and uh that's how i found out about the speakeasies and at one of the speakeasies
this uh this guy said like oh are you in the industry and i i'm from la i thought he was
talking about hollywood and i went oh i used to be and then he started talking about like
restaurants and i went oh no oh no no oh i literally thought you were going to talk about
horses so i'm like oh bourbon or bourbon like i was like where are we going with this but
well i was i was making really good small talk with him and he was the bartender but i just
thought like oh he's a bartender he really knows how to read people he can tell him i'm not from
around here like i don't know what he i don't know he just thinks you work in a restaurant in
lexington but he just thought i like was like a waiter down the street i mean it sounds like
you're a jack of all trades you're like i can talk restaurant shop i i did for a little bit
it took me a second to realize what the hell he was saying so i guess i love it i can talk
restaurants trust me yeah you're from la you can talk smooth you can talk anything well i

i am putting this i'm now cutting this into the regular episode because i wanted to get some air
time all of that okay jack not all of it oh half of it we described in yappy ever so yappy ever got
the first you'd like the inside scoop but now i want to cut back in and say wow we're talking
about the coolest idea ever where i'm just realizing like how perfect it is and i'm just
of em going ghost hunting with celebrities interviewing them in haunted houses
and i'm like i can see it in my i see it i mean it's genius it's fucking genius you have to do
this i i would like to very much uh holy shit are you seeing it for the first time now we've
talked about this for years i know but i couldn't see it because i think to me like the interviewing
part is so like not something i like and i'm it kind of scares me a little bit but i'm like
it scares me and it's like we were talking about this in a yappy or like the the journalism part
kind of like wigs me out like even though i studied it it's like i learned very quickly
that is not my strong suit and i don't necessarily like strangers and celebrities and i'm scared of
people but like now when i'm thinking about it as like you in a scenario like a hot ones with
i'm like oh my god i see it now like yeah i don't know for how much we're keeping it but i'll just
say again my my dream for years years and years i mean since we got i just never understood it from
my perspective but i feel like you would fucking nail it yeah i think i tried to kept picturing it
with me in it and i was like i don't think i'd be good at that and i wouldn't be able to do that
properly i always thought you'd be great in it and i would have always thought you'd be like the
head honcho on the interviewing part but it always it just never like it just always was like
something where i was like oh that would be super cool but like i never could picture it but
conceptualize it but now i kind of can see it maybe well i don't know i've always thought it
feels like i think it's because the combo with the travel stuff you're talking about like somehow
it just clicked for me like oh wow this really is no i have a whole all your strengths oh oh i
thought i lost you for a second no i am i probably got too excitable and burst the internet or
something no i mean i've always had my my thought was always um in case i don't know where it's
getting cut so i'll say it again but like hot ones but instead of eating spicy foods it's
ghost hunting with celebrities where you're interviewing them while they're like scared
like can you imagine like this is a pipe dream obviously but imagine
like kiki palmer in a haunted house trying to answer questions and not act scared or something
like that'd be so funny like so good and i think ellen degeneres used to have a bit and like fuck
her so it's like oh yeah a bit and hers was just going through a jump scare attraction and just
watching people get scared but like bullying people and laughing at them this is like not that
which i think is a much more interesting take yeah i think so because i mean even if we like
if someone was just too fucking scared i feel more comfortable talking about this now is that
i know that i'm leaving the podcast or everyone knows
so you're not you don't have to do it well it's sort of like i have a perspective from an outside
angle now that like maybe i didn't before where i was like oh we would have to do it together but
it's like oh now i can see that you like see this as like your soul like that would be fucking
amazing like you would be really good at that so anyway i needed that to be on public record
not paid well not behind a paywall well thank you and that would also help because remember i told
you years ago too and we we talked about it for a second but then nothing ever came from it but i
drink themed like like somehow have our own ghost hunting equipment or work with a ghost hunting
company to i think that would be it would work even better over there if like i had my own
established ghost hunting tv talk show with celebrities and then got to have like my own
like branded equipment and then like we just said have also my own like quirky roadside attraction
travel show since i'm already in that area and yeah i don't know i have i have a whole
several things idea for myself but i don't know one if people would be interested two how possible
it is it feels like it should have happened by now and if it hasn't no that's not no no no you
gotta you gotta understand this is what i'm saying it's all falling into place divine timing you have
to you have to wait till you're you've developed enough of a skill set or uh the timing's right
just things just have to kind of play out but i think that really would be like such a cool
thing to pursue really thank you i mean i've always thought that but now i'm like saying
oh i can see it like very like real concretely well if i ever actually
did it and for some reason zach bangins is there you would have to also be a guest on the show also
i could not do that without you would be no stopping me no matter how hard you tried no
matter how many law can you imagine like a ghost hunting with jude law and here's the problem i
would probably assume most of your guests are jude law based on my kind of perception rate of jude law
and my win to lose ratio is like not pretty so i'd probably end up crashing
way too many of those but like the zach bagans one like hell or high water you could hire every
etsy etsy witch to stop me and i'd probably find my way in so don't worry if i ever got jude law
to spend 24 hours with me i would spend a few of them flying him to your town and parking him on
your front porch just to have you open the door just to see your reaction the terror you would
and then you'd have to film it because it would be like some sort of like that would be insidious
I know. I think so.
Would be me opening the door. I don't know what the first two are about, but I feel like this.
This is what it would be about is me opening the door and going, now my brain is short
circuiting for real.
Yeah, that would be rough.
Thank you for the little plug.
I mean, if anyone's ever wondered, like, if I didn't have this podcast, what my next move
would be or what that would be it.
So that's kick ass.
Everyone show interest.
So that way, our manager wants to actually help me put that pitch together.
We have everyone show interest.
I'm showing deep interest.
So whatever I can do, I always thought it'd be a good YouTube show, but I'm just horrified
of, like, camera work and everything.
Like the microphone, this microphone, this one microphone horrifies me.
I can't imagine a whole situation.
Anyway.
Well, start imagining it, baby, because otherwise it's not going to happen.
So Etsy witches, please conjure up my my being able to have know-how on that.
Thank you.
Em, you've got the know-how.
You've been doing a podcast for 10 years.
Ghost hunting away.
Come on.
Okay, your turn, though.
What's your, like, next dream thing?
No, no, no, no, no, no.
I have no clue.
I'm winging it.
I don't believe it.
I don't believe you.
I know you've got something cool cooking.
Nope.
I'm walking off a cliff and I'm going, I've literally, I have a huge word on my mirror.
It says surrender.
And that's for two years now I've been doing that.
And I'm, like, following, following the heart and surrendering.
And so I kind of don't know what's next.
I've been doing these readings on YouTube and TikTok.
And it's literally what I, I don't know how to explain it, except that it's, like, I'm,
like, time to do a video.
Yeah.
And then I just do one.
I channel it.
I don't even know what I'm saying, basically.
I post it.
I move on with my day.
It's just this strange routine that one day started and I've, like, not missed it.
I've missed, like, one day.
And it just feels, like, normal.
And, but that's kind of it.
Like, I'm just, like, I'm clearing my house out.
I'm really, like.
Nice.
It feels like I'm in a preparation phase for something.
Does that make sense?
But I don't necessarily know what it is.
So that's why there's a lot of surrender where it's, like, I feel like so many things are
falling away and, like, opening up.
Space in my life that I'm sort of, like, I don't know what's going to fill it.
And I don't think it's my job to force it.
So I'm just going to see.
But does it feel good to not know for a second?
It feels terrible.
Oh.
Oh.
Well, no, no, no.
I thought it was, like, how nice.
No, it's, like, I'm trying to really just trust the process of, like, that in-between limbo
phase, that, like, liminal space of things are falling away.
And, like, I have to trust that, like, better things will fill it.
Or, you know, other things will take, you know.
But there's, like, this, like, void space where you're, like, well, what do I do?
And it's, like, sometimes all you can do is just, like, be.
So I've been just trying to be.
And it's hard.
But I found a lot of, like, little joy throughout the day.
And I feel very privileged that I'm not, like, you know, rushing through to find, like, financial
support after I leave the podcast.
So that's really fortunate.
So, yeah, I don't necessarily feel, like, very, I mean, I'm still doing Beach to Sandy.
And we have, like, that going on as usual.
But, yeah, I don't really have any, like, big.
I'm really just, it's, like, a weird liminal space of, like, it feels like a portal where
I'm, like, every day I'm kind of, like, okay, one day I'll end up somewhere and look back
and go, whoa, you know.
But I don't know.
That sounds very, like, vague and, like, esoteric.
But I basically just am.
Kind of, like, it feels kind of, like, one step at a time.
Like, and the path is, like, clearing as I walk, you know, a little bit.
I mean, some of the best things come out of just being with yourself for a second.
Yes.
Yeah, exactly.
That's where I'm at right now.
And it's hard because I really am an impatient person.
And I think one of my life missions here on Earth is to learn patience and surrender.
And it's really hard.
But I'm trying.
And I'm finding little joys in the day, so.
Well, Allison quit her job a while ago and couldn't be happier now.
So, not that you're, you know.
You know what I mean.
No, but you're right.
It's, like, fall.
Like, sometimes it's, like, oh, there's grief and it's so bittersweet.
Like, most big decisions are big or sweet.
Big or sweet.
Most big decisions are big or sweet and bittersweet.
Yeah, because there's always something.
There's, you know, there's grief to be had in every, like, new chapter because something
had to close.
And so I don't.
Yeah.
So I don't.
I don't kind of know where I'm going.
That's fair.
That's fine.
But it feels right, you know?
So I'm, like, just one foot in front of the other for right now.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
But I feel really, like, at peace.
And a lot of people were, like, worried about us, which is fair because it did feel like
that post came kind of out of nowhere.
And then we were recording as it came out.
And then, like, the episode came out a few days later.
So I think there was, like, some context missing in the timing.
But, yeah.
We even.
We.
Again.
You said this in the last episode, too.
That, like, we definitely wanted to tell you before a statement ever came out.
Like, the plan was originally that we would.
Yes.
That we would discuss it way before there was ever a.
Yeah.
Like, an Instagram post.
But that did.
That did look.
It was just the timing of everything.
It was abrupt.
Did not work out the way we wanted to.
So it looked.
It was abrupt.
It looked rougher than it was.
It felt, like, sort of chaotic and abrupt.
And, like, yeah.
So for everybody who was.
Yeah.
So.
Anyway.
All that to say.
Yeah.
We're doing well.
I mean, I can't speak for you.
But, like, I, you know, I just.
I might be a famous ghost hunter one day.
So I think.
I mean, right.
It's like we're just kind of following the steps.
We're not.
Some people are very worried about my mental health.
I'm.
I'm doing very well.
Well, because of the.
You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to.
Well, no.
But people talked about, like, a couple of people are worried about spiritual psychosis.
And my.
Pro readings and OCD.
And, like, I want to give that the grace of, like.
Or, like, the credit of, like, yes, OCD and religious OCD.
And it's a very fraught subject.
And it's something I've struggled with.
But I'm very.
I'm very aware.
Like, I.
From.
From my.
And it's very important to talk about and bring up.
And I do respect for sure that.
Asking.
Because it's.
It's worth considering, I guess.
But for what it's worth.
Yeah.
Mentally, I'm doing very well.
And health wise in general.
So.
Nobody.
No.
And people.
Because people were, like, you know, a little worried that I was kind of spinning out.
And that it was, like, this sudden thing.
And that I was now this, like, spiritually.
On this, like, kind of.
Mentally unwell.
Like, train of.
Oh.
Believing.
You know.
And I'm.
I promise you.
I'm grounded.
And very well.
It's just been a very long year.
And we haven't really been able to share a lot of the things behind the scenes.
Yeah.
But, yeah.
So, for what it's worth.
I just want to say, like, I'm okay.
So, thank you.
And.
I'm glad I ran away and didn't see the comments.
So.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Sorry you had to hear.
No.
No.
It was good to know.
If that didn't feel good on you.
No.
No.
It wasn't, like, even that.
I think I've been able to, like, heal to a place where I'm, like, not.
I'm detached from, like, the feeling.
Like, I'm able to, like, recognize, like, it's not necessarily about me.
You know.
Or, like, be able to, like, not take on people's.
Like.
Affect people's disappointment.
But not, like, bury myself in it.
Which is something I've worked on through the nine, ten years of this podcast.
So, it's been.
That's been a huge lesson.
And a beautiful one.
And so, it was, like, kind of nice to read the comments.
And just feel like.
Oh.
People are just expressing their feelings.
And I don't need to, like, take them on as my own.
You know.
But.
Yeah.
But.
But understand where people are coming from.
And.
Yeah.
So, I do appreciate everyone chiming in and sharing.
And saying what the show meant to them.
And all that.
You know.
Bittersweet.
I did see.
Some.
Some TikToks have come across my desk.
Of.
Oh.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I only saw one.
But.
I mean.
They're very sweet.
But people are just, like.
It's weird to see.
Like.
I know.
Our name trending.
Not, like, on everyone else's TikTok.
But my algorithm.
It said, like.
Yeah.
To see myself being discussed on my For You page is really something I never have experienced.
Honestly.
Yeah.
Usually.
TikTok.
TikTok is where I go to escape anything.
Escape anyone who knows me.
And then all of a sudden people are, like, saying our names.
Not many.
But it was.
Right.
Because TikTok's, like, where I go when I don't want to be perceived.
Because it's, like, I want to perceive everyone else.
And so, suddenly, it's, like, I'm perceiving you.
And it's, like, wait.
That's not how this app works.
Like, I'm supposed to be.
Yeah.
What does it say about my algorithm that I knew I would want to know about myself?
You know?
Love that.
Because by the time that scrolled across my For You page, you had already commented.
And I was, like, that's hilarious.
Oh, really?
Okay.
So.
Yeah.
You had already commented.
I was, like, there you are.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We saw the same one then.
No.
I've had a few where people have just.
It's just been very funny that it shows up.
And I go, oh, I wasn't even looking for it.
So.
I realized, by the way, Christine, that I never even tried these drinks.
They've just been sitting here this whole time.
Well, you better.
But no.
That was all important to say.
I'm very glad that we said all that.
I hope that.
That whatever you do next is really special and really big.
I hope.
I'm a celebrity on your ghost hunting show.
I literally, for years, man, wanted you to be the other person on the ghost hunting show.
Well, no.
But see, that's where I got confused.
Now you're just leaving to be the fucking guest.
That's all you want.
I want to be the guest.
Your first.
The first question on that is going to be, why the fuck did you not want to be the other
host of the show?
Why do you just want to come on one time?
Because I'm too socially awkward.
I don't like interviewing strangers.
I feel.
really insecure around celebrities, etc. I don't know.
plethora of reasons talk to my therapist that's very nice of you i really would like to one day
have a ghost hunting show that would be it's like i couldn't picture it until it was like oh like
because and then i think it was the hot ones i know you've talked about how it was but like i
think it finally clicked in my head of like oh yeah you'd be that's like i think it'd be it'd
be informative it'd be scary and it'd be funny which are like my three favorite things because
like i want them to be it's perfect like and it's scary and funny and informative yeah i think it'd
be especially also i'm talking about this way too much i can shut up i'm sorry um i'll just say
this one part that i think it'd be really funny that like so the way that hot ones originally was
and i don't know if it's still this way because they've changed their format a few different times
now but originally like the 10th wing is supposed to be the hottest one so and the questions get
harder as the wings get harder to eat and so by the 10th one you're not even thinking about your
pr training you're just fucking answering honestly to just get it out okay okay
okay and so it really challenges you to yeah and so i always thought it'd be funny if i asked
them questions but like for like the final like three questions i had like that would be if they
were willing like we would be in separate rooms they'd be like in the scariest part by themselves
and like through a walkie-talkie i would ask them the questions or something like just so they're
like really freaked the fuck out by every sound or something it could be like if you answer these
three questions you can get out of the like an escape room but they're by themselves but you're
locked in but also like how many people out there are gonna like agree to this like i'm gonna put you
in how many people would agree to eating a bunch of chicken wings on camera think about it the
concept isn't what like the concept you don't have to worry about that the like what people
because that you could do that with any fucking show um anyway the concept is there don't mess
with it it's so good imagine if i told gene simmons you're gonna go be in an abandoned house you could
trip over anything it's pitch black and also you have to hang out with me in the middle of the night
when you're like actively trying to like get your beauty sleep for the rest of your junket tomorrow
for your junket i don't think you want to be in that position i feel like i'm just there's gotta
there's gonna be so many liability insurance forms in my future if i go through with this so
yeah you don't need gene that's why you're leaving that's why you're fucking that's why you i heard
how much you wanted gene simmons on our show and i said i'm out of here oh okay now tell me speaking
of a true crime that sentence now tell me the rest of uh that's right what a good sagoo so
i have a story here and i don't want to sugarcoat this in any way it's an extremely
really heavy one oh um yeah it's a dark one it's it's very rough okay uh it includes crimes against
children
um and some pretty traumatic triggering stuff so i want to warn everybody it's the story of the
green family killings okay and so i wanted to put that out there um sorry what were you gonna ask
well i was gonna say i i'm surprised you're really bringing out the heavy hitters um right right
before your grand exit oh well you know i feel like i go through i go kind of like back and
forth where like some weeks it'll feel lighter like with the one last week there i mean full
disclosure there was like some stuff behind the scenes with the the the the the the the the the
um our researcher and and so we were like emergency family emergency so um but for this
week searcher was like bring in the heavy hitters and there were a bunch that we were thinking about
and this is one that they brought that i was like i don't know man and then the more i looked into
it and like talk about insidious i was like i need to cover this oh okay
it but it's tough okay uh i want to warn you that it's tough so after this maybe we have a
preparation maybe we have a i don't know i have a sip of water next to me that's about all i have
to to really feel good after this one i have a moon pie and tums the moon pie will be handled
first obviously both will be needed i think by the end yeah that's all so yeah i'm gonna jump
into it um you know there is some redemption to it but i'm gonna jump into it um and i'm gonna
so that's good but like yeah it is it is heavy so if you're in a place where you're not feeling like
able to stomach kind of it's not gory necessarily it's just really it's just about children
white tragic and involves children exactly okay so the green family um this takes place wouldn't
you freaking know it searcher picks a story not knowing any of this this is a couple weeks ago
in curdle lane idaho oh okay is that how you pronounce that say it again wait i thought you
i thought that's where you went
wait now i'm serious now i'm seriously having it say court lane court lane i'm gonna be so
fucking honest with you yeah both times you said it just cut out what's happening you said ohio at
the end right no oh i really didn't hear any of it then what did you say court lane idaho idaho i
heard ohio that's why oh that's why i went oh because i was like oh you're
what are the odds we're both in that area i guess i don't know i just i just isn't that where you
went court lane idaho yes you went there recently i did that was the place that um is because maggie
was stoked that i was going there she loved i thought this was another fond du lac where you
were like what are you saying and i was like you were there and then i'm doing it again so i'm glad
that's not what's happening sorry no you're like literally only the city cut out both times and i
was like what the fuck that feels bad that feels bad i thought you said ohio and i just went oh
okay because like we're both in the area because right right no so how do you can you can you
pronounce it for me core delane quarter lane okay so may 16 2005 quarter lane idaho this guy
named bob hollingsworth stops by his neighbor's house his neighbor brenda green lived in a house
right beside i-90 but the home was still rural and located nine miles out of the city so he was
outside of town on forested land in the mountains brenda lived with her three youngest children
there was 13 year old slade nine year old dylan and the youngest who was eight named shasta or
shasta shoot now i don't know shasta i think shasta 37 year old mark mckenzie also lived there
he was brenda's boyfriend or fiance some sources say and he loved the children like like his own he
was their stepdad they were very close and now get this this is the last part of this that's any sort
of banter worthy or funny so let's dive in the family called the property wolf lodge and i want
to remind you like this occurred in 2005 like i don't know it was great wolf lodge in existence
at that point i think so wow because i feel like this would be like the lesser wolf lodge you know
what i mean or or the greater wolf lodge i don't know it's um like the slimy pasta end instead of
these
that's right it's like yeah and so i just i found that really interesting i was like wolf lodge i
feel like people had to have made that joke if they had to have i don't know what they called
like that's what everyone called the house hang on hang on when did great wolf lodge open i just
discovered it oh you did okay 97 okay so yeah and like in the area well no ohio remember when i
thought we were in ohio because you said you thought i said ohio remember when we both went
to ohio by accident remember when i had that dream that we got on a plane to port or i got
on a plane to portland maine instead of portland oregon for a tour oh my god okay so in any case
i thought wolf lodge was quite a quite a name um and it kind of had this reputation of just being
like the fun house on the block like it was very social like open door policy reminds me of like
how you talked about just like people neighbors were welcome and like kids would just come in and
out and be like oh my god i'm gonna go to ohio and i'm gonna go to ohio and i'm gonna go to ohio and
stuff yeah we were the the house that there was always someone coming and going the lesser wolf
lodge of your area we're the pup the pup lot the cub lodge or something
i'm so sick of a gimmick you know yeah i'll tell you i'll never not be sick of a gimmick
yeah we're gimmicked out so mint mobile um thank god is gimmick free uh thanks to their summer
sale right now all of mint's plans are 15 per month even the unlimited plan so free yourself
from big white and go to ohio and i'll see you next time bye bye
wireless and their gimmicks and gotchas and switch to mint for high speed data and coverage
on the t-mobile 5g network we have experience with this we know how easy it is to switch and
we recommend it all the time thank you mint mobile thank you mobile and we were talking a lot about
their gimmicks we were not talking enough about their gotchas but none of either of them when

kids so he was coming by to bring him his payment um but weirdly when he showed up the house was
eerily quiet there was the occasional sound of a dog barking but otherwise completely silent and
this was very unusual um it was a social spot people were almost always in and out um like i
said there were just kids and people always running around um bob also noticed that the
back door was ajar but not like propped open for people to come by more just like it had been left
kind of opened and in like a hurried way and something felt completely wrong he looked inside
and called out but no one answered and that's when bob noticed blood on the floor there was
blood everywhere uh he called 9-1-1 the sheriff's department said they would send someone to check
it out i want to tell you right now bob is a walking soundbite i don't know i'm just
so delighted that they interviewed this guy of all people because the way he describes
anything that's happening is newsworthy in and of itself um so bob said uh when he called 9-1-1
they said they're sending a deputy to check it out and bob said you better send more than one
i'm like okay liam neeson sure die hard all right seriously and then in an interview bob later said
i butcher lambs which i'm like what a wild fucking way to start a sentence my friend yeah did anyone
ask like no i think he was saying so i i understand where the yeah so he basically said i butcher lambs
and i know what real blood looks like i knew somebody had been murdered there and it's like
what a fucking soundbite though like what an insane thing to for a person who just discovered
a crime scene to say like on the i mean it's just shocking it's shocking yeah um so he's very
quotable i'll say that um but yeah also probably very traumatized because that would be a very
traumatizing event i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know
especially knowing that children are involved in this right and you know the family i mean you're
there to pay the kid for mowing your lawn like yeah yeah deeply disturbing so the deputies arrived
within minutes um there was blood on the door outside and with bob's report they believed they
had cause due cause to enter without a warrant and when they did they saw a shocking amount of blood
through the home it was on the floors the walls and then entering the living room they found
three bodies on the floor
the deputies exited sealed the scene against contamination and called in detectives to
begin a homicide investigation soon after darlene torres who is brenda's mother was just home
watching tv and brenda's the one who lived in the house when she saw wolf lodge her daughter's house
on the local news and it was announced by a reporter that three people had been killed
so brenda's mom darlene torres was the one who was watching tv and brenda's the one who lived in the
is like obviously freaking out her other daughter brandy is the younger sister brenda and is trying
to remain calm and tells her mom like hey we don't know who was killed like maybe like there's still
hope let's wait we don't know if it's brenda or mark or the kids but when they called the
sheriff's department they were informed that brenda mark and 13 year old slade were all dead
the thing that had thankfully been accounted for already by one of the
deputies who knew the family is that there were two other children that lived in the home
oh shit and they were nowhere to be found so dylan and shasta were unaccounted for
brenda had five children actually the three youngest lived in the house with them
who were slayed dylan and shasta brenda was 40 and she had been divorced from her first husband
steve who actually lived with darlene like lived in the house with darlene his former mother-in-law
investigators hope that shasta and dylan with were with family and friends but it was soon clear that
like nobody knew where they were and hopefully you know they had escaped this terrible scene inside
but also that has its own risks because it's like well then where are they like are they out in the
woods lost are they abducted like what could be going on there was a massive search executed of
roughly 400 acres by foot helicopter and horseback divers searched the creek but they found no sign
of shasta and dylan's family and friends but it was soon clear that like nobody knew where they
or dylan and they launched immediately an amber alert darlene and brandy got in the car and drove
for miles i mean i mean it's just horrible like mom and daughter looking for the missing sister
and the two kids the grandkids i mean it's just sick um so they are out searching for any sign
of dylan and shasta they keep passing interstate signs displaying the amber alert which is also so
surreal um
and darlene could only think over and over again this cannot be happening like it's just so surreal
back at wolf lodge the fbi had gotten involved and detectives put together what they could
mark brenda and slade all appeared to have died of blunt force trauma with multiple visible wounds
on their heads their body temperatures at time of discovery indicated they were killed within 24
hours of being found their ankles and wrists were bound with zip ties and duct tape and they were
all in the same room and they were all in the same room and they were all in the same room and they
were all in the same room and they were all in the same room and they were all in the same room
slade was lying with his head at his mother's feet
yeah it gets worse the it gets worse okay oh i was gonna well okay no go ahead go ahead
i would know i was just gonna traumatize people even further and just say like if they're all
bound that means that one of them watched the other two get their heads bashed in
you will be hearing the details of that so okay sorry about that okay there was no apparent forced
entry to the house um so detectives consider they might have known the murderer and it was like such
a specific attack you know and like so angry clearly and so vicious um they looked at steve
of course the ex-husband who lived with his mother-in-law um like could he have been so angry
at his ex that he would like murder her mom or something like that and they looked at steve and
mark and his own son slade that was his child and his other two children are now missing like
could he have been involved um but even brenda's family was like no like he loved his children
this is not something he would do you're looking in the wrong spot um according to him he was at
home at darlene's using the computer all night when the murders took place so they let him go
he went on the news making an appeal to release his children safely um
he did say however in the press or in the press conference they had nothing to do with any of this
which like i don't find particularly
concerning but i guess police were like what do you mean any of this sure and he was involved
in some motorcycle gangs or had vague affiliations allegedly so you know they thought maybe he got
involved in something over his head or whatever and that's why he said like
all of they weren't involved with any of this but it didn't really make sense because like there
wasn't a ransom and like he hadn't heard from anybody and so they looked through his computer
confirmed his alibi and he was ruled out as a suspect who just wanted to find his kids okay
they redirected their focus um and detectives looked at an autopsy report declaring that the
murder weapon had used a large hammer to kill mark brenda and slade jesus yeah it's
just brutal blood analysis though found that the majority of the blood in the house belonged to
slade none belonged to dylan or shasta which is a good sign right like maybe they're still alive
um so they've started putting their faces out there trying to keep their faces active in the
minds of people of court lane um meanwhile the investigators dug into the personal lives of
brenda and mark who had known each other for years and after brenda divorced from steve
the two of them started spending time together
and fell in love they both loved the outdoors and were a bit rugged like wolf lodge itself
was a home that her father had been raised in brenda's father and it was very outdoorsy like
it lacked a washer dryer it had a propane stove so they're kind of like that's just
that was their vibe sure but it was a really happy people cabin folk um but they really just
loved being there even slade um the 13 year old was described as happy-go-lucky uh he was
he the older brothers that um he had who didn't live with them he wanted to play music like them
um he was sweet his grandma darlene described him as perfect dylan was a bit shy darlene said he was
a bashful and cuddly teddy bear but shasta on the other hand the youngest who's eight was unusually
tough for her age just like her mom her family said she liked to dress up as a princess but at
the end of the day was a tomboy who followed her mom around as a little assistant at wolf lodge
the family was very happy they had a lot of good friends and community there wasn't really
any animosity that they could find um or find a motive so detectives looked at every option
hundreds of tips are coming in about sightings of dylan and shasta that are you know not really
leading anywhere um they look into the timeline and on may 15th the night before the killings
there had been an impromptu barbecue at wolf lodge so some friends had stopped by and then a
few more until everyone was gathered to cook and eat together this wasn't unusual to happen
but detectives use this as a starting point to track down the folks who were there that night
sure okay one family friend named robert luttner had been there and there were some reports that
he'd been in some kind of argument with mark and when they told when they talked to um brenda's
older son jesse he informed them that yeah their family friend robert actually owed mark and brenda
money so detectives are like we better talk to this guy so they can't find him um he was on parole
at the time for a prior conviction so they're starting to get some red flags yeah um they also
learned that he left town the day after the killings to visit family with approval from his
po um and a frantic search began because they thought maybe he had some answers they made a
public statement requesting leads on his whereabouts and his face was broadcast nationally
and almost immediately robert reported back to his parole officer and was like i was at my
aunt's funeral like you know you know this i i'm i have nothing to do with this whatsoever i love
this family they're my close friends um and yes he said i do owe them a thousand dollars because
they helped me pay like to not foreclose on my house um but we did not have an argument about it
at the cookout um and there was just no evidence whatsoever he like saw himself on the news and
that's when he reported himself back to his parole officer being like horrified nothing to do with
this yeah exactly
like what a thing to see on the news yeah i mean what a bad um also darlene earlier seeing her
daughter's house on the news like what the hell i know yeah finding things out on the news feels
like something that only happens in movies and so far it's happened twice in this story yeah
yes exactly good point so now they're out at a loss they're like well we're losing time to find
these kids if they are still alive and weeks are passing and tips keep coming in um they're trying
to keep their names in the news and they're trying to keep their names in the news and they're
trying to keep their names in the news and they're trying to keep their names in the news and they're
on july 2nd dylan and shasta had been missing for nearly seven weeks and that night a 911 call came
in from a denny's restaurant the caller said i've got a tall man here with a little girl and she
looks so much like shasta oh shit okay see something say something you are on it because
although the abductor might have taken shasta and dylan anywhere since they had vanished the call
wrong when a man came in with a young girl that she described as filthy her hair was tangled her
skin and clothes were dirty like this was obviously already a problem before she realized
the closeness in resemblance to the missing girl from cordaline um she went to take the order of the
pair and the girl seemed afraid and didn't speak amber suggested a milkshake and the girl looked
to the man for approval before she answered it's giving elizabeth smart vibes to me 100 like don't
make don't give them any clue as to who you are yeah just or just like he's in charge i just do
what he says yeah amber is a hero went back to the kitchen told her manager linda they realized that
this does very much resemble the girl all over the news so they call 911 and amber is noticing
the man's looking nervous and agitated and is trying to get out of there and she returns to
the table and stalls she has to fucking stall like out of a tv show good for her
she pretends there's a problem with the billing system and she's like sir i'm so sorry but you
can't leave without paying the bill we're really trying to run this just give it one more minute
and he's just getting agitated and he's like trying to leave um he stands up she's like we're
trying please like please we insist that you stay after an agonizing way officers finally arrive
and arrest him on the spot and they recognize shasta it is her and she is finally safe good
although i wonder what was oh first of all what were those seven
weeks like probably beyond hell but i i mean because it's starting to sound very much like
elizabeth smart now that i'm thinking more about it where that she must have done something to
have earned his trust to be walking around oh m it's like we've done almost 500 of these episodes
that's exactly it and i didn't even see it coming because i was just like engrossed in the details
of the case but like you're 100 right i'm yeah right i have girls
thanks survive girls their survival man this it just rocks my world every time
okay so shasta's family's notified right they're delighted they're just
being beside themselves but also their hearts sink when they learn dylan is not with her
and i want to remind you shasta is the youngest she's eight
mm-hmm so the man who'd been arrested with shasta was a man named joseph duncan
he invoked his rights he refused to communicate with detectives so they
couldn't find out any details about where dylan might be unless they asked shasta herself
and meanwhile she's eight she's traumatized and she has to undergo surgery to administer
stitches and other care to her injuries um later as an adult she recalled waking up from these
surgeries to her father steve standing at her side looking down at her and they just held each
other and wept i mean remember he was even in being interrogated about or interrogated but
questioned about being interrogated about being interrogated about being interrogated about being
like his daughter's disappearance yeah and now like she's right here
so soon she was ready to tell her family and detectives exactly what had happened
and this is when you hear a story and you're like i can't believe even after doing true crime for so
long that this shit really happens to people and they survive it and then they i mean it's just
unreal okay
her ability to recall and describe the ordeal despite the trauma and her age etc was remarkable
but some things did remain unclear she told them where joseph had taken dylan and her and in later
interviews she actually recalled in detail how she had watched dylan get killed but at the hospital
she didn't really seem to remember that he was dead and she asked her dad if he knew what happened
to dylan even though she knew but wasn't i guess sure it looks it looks interesting yeah it's just
i think she didn't hadn't processed it yet and so we didn't get the details right away but what we
do know or what they did know and got from her that day in the hospital is that the night of
her abduction she was asleep at home in the bedroom she shared with dylan brenda her mom
had woken her up crying and confused shasta asked if it was time for school this part makes me sick
to my stomach
brenda told her no that there was someone in the house that didn't want them to be there
oh my god the intruder joseph was wearing a mask dressed in all black and armed with a shotgun
oh my god he forced the entire family to gather where he bound them with duct tape and zip ties
shasta remembered thinking that when he began to bind her she knew that he wasn't a good person
joseph carried shasta and dylan outside and laid them down beneath a crab apple tree in the yard
the two youngest children told each other they were scared they heard thumping sounds and mark
making sounds like he was in pain and then they saw their brother slade run outside
his wrists were still bound but he had somehow gotten his legs free
shasta recalled thinking he looked confused like he didn't know where to go
he doesn't no of course joseph pursued slade and attacked him with a hammer until he seemed to lose
consciousness joseph cut the ties from dylan and shasta and made them stand up and walk to his
vehicle which was a stolen rental jeep as she passed shasta looked her older brother slade in
the eyes and he looked back at her just staring and shasta felt as though he died in that moment
looking at her is how she described it oh my god
but because he was later recovered in the house beside his mother at her feet investigators believe
he must have somehow gotten up one more time and gone back inside which would also over to her or
something yes into the back door which is where the original neighbor saw the blood all over the
outside of the door which explains how it got there it's just so deeply disturbing
just as everyone had feared joseph got away with dylan and shasta
transporting them nearly 100 miles to an isolated campground speaking of horror movies
joseph told them they were in lolo forest which is a 2.3 million acre land area in the rocky mountains
of montana oh wow okay he told dylan and shasta this is where a lot of this stuff gets really
detailed and disturbing so tread with caution here folks he told dylan and shasta that they
had to call him daddy dad or jet he said the name jet was the name he had been given by his prison
husband
yeah joseph shot a hole in a tree to demonstrate the gun's power
and told the children that he would do the same to them if they tried to escape
and then for weeks he proceeded to as you can imagine do the worst most despicable things to
these children uh rape torture um he would leave to pick up food or other supplies and he would
chain them up separately so that they couldn't reach each other shasta told dylan that she
promised she would get get them both home alive and she asked him if he believed her and he said
that he did one day joseph pointed out a squirrel that regularly wandered into their camp this part
is hard okay he told dylan and shasta that if they caught the squirrel they could go home
dylan managed to catch it and joseph pretended to start packing as if he would
really take them home but while shasta and dylan were standing side by side holding hands
preparing to go home joseph shot dylan without warning twice shasta said later she couldn't
scream or react in any way when dylan died beside her joseph made her gather up dylan's
belongings like some toys they had taken from the house into a tarp which they then burned
and and it's no wonder that she got to the hospital later and said i don't know what
happened to dylan because total shock how could you even begin to know yeah and so that was just
like a sick little game he was playing where like if one of them catches a squirrel that'll be the
one i kill yep yeah and like them holding hands and thinking they get to go home i mean all of it
is extremely sick and the fact that she still had guilt afterward about the fact that she was
like not bringing him home you know because she promised him she would bring him home like it's
just all joseph made her uh gather up the stuff and they burned the tarp he then asked her whether
she would rather be shot or strangled to death she told him she would rather be strangled not
solely because she was terrified to experience what she had just seen happen to her brother
but because she also somehow felt being strangled would give her an opportunity to negotiate
so like to fight back i guess
wow
joseph started to strangle her with a rope and shasta said please don't jet
he stopped and started to cry he told shasta that when she called him jet he realized she must
genuinely care about him and that's when she realized what she needed to do to survive
mm-hmm and it was pretend to care and love this man
this is like a trauma bond i know like we've used the word trauma bond incorrectly in the past but
like this trauma captor like victim captor thing or victim abuser thing is yeah so whenever he
referenced taking her home she would tell him that she didn't want to go home she wanted to
stay with him like against every cell in her being you know wow shasta saw that each time she
pretended to like joseph it would catch him off guard and make him happy so he
began to trust her and would subject her to stories about himself the crimes he had committed
against other children and she was realizing like he would he was trusting her one day he asked
shasta if she would stay with him forever and be his daughter in earnest and she told him of course
she would he was so happy and told shasta they would go back to his hometown so she could meet
his mom and siblings that's the ability to think that he could get away with i mean it's just the
confidence narcissism thing again that we always talk about i think it's also like some extreme
mental illness to say like an eight-year-old you're gonna i mean well yeah but i mean like
the i'm i'm saying specifically the boldness of thinking you can now bring a very like very
popular missing child to others
and say this is my daughter yeah yeah and they're gonna be like what the fuck are you talking about
totally totally um yeah 100 like like so out of the realm of any sort of logic you know that you
think you could just do that so she said yeah i would love that um he said we'd get our own home
and be a family and you know he's sexually assaulting this girl remember like this i'm
yeah shasta pretended to be excited for their future but she said oh i would really love to
show you my hometown of court lane she lied to him and said she wanted to show him things from
her life like her school and her best friend's house so he could get to know her better
and he fell for it hook line and sinker plus court lane was on the route to his own home
so he agreed and shortly thereafter they were spotted in a denny's in court lane where shasta
was rescued
that's how she got free
a few days after that dylan's remains were recovered in lolo national forest
they were able to pin down who this joseph duncan was he was an active fugitive having
fled minnesota to avoid being charged for sexually assaulting children in a park
yep that makes sense yep there we go his incarceration history went back to his teenage
years in washington state beginning in nineteen ninety-one and he was released from prison
in nineteen eighty when he was seventeen years old and sentenced to twenty years in prison for
raping a fourteen-year-old boy in the following years he was paroled multiple times but repeatedly
violated parole and was reincarcerated but finally released in two thousand moving to fargo north
dakota where he studied computer science at a local college but in two thousand four he crossed
the border into minnesota where he stalked and assaulted children in a park who then identified
him he was granted bail that
a friend posted for him and he fled
while fleeing he attacked the green family this was within four months of fleeing this
bail yeah fearing he might have hurt more people detectives got a warrant for the gps system
joseph was using in the stolen jeep and wouldn't you know it there were thirty three waypoints on
his route from minnesota to court lane and each waypoint marked a potential victim he was
considering holy shit
he plugged them into the fucking gps
that's uh i mean absolute monster
yeah
so this is why he said he did it he said he resented that he had to report
as a sex offender wherever he moved and that when a child went missing or a similar case was open
that he was the one visited by law enforcement and i'm like well i wonder whose fucking fault
that is you fucking pervert what the fuck are you talking about again that stupid narcissism of like
the way
how are you a victim in this how does your brain fucking do that
the gymnastics alone at yeah it's crazy and he he said that he knew he'd go back to prison well
he claimed that this was um these crimes were committed in revenge against the system for
incarcerating him and with the most recent charge of assaulting the kids in the park he knew he
would go back to prison so he said he wanted to do something big before he went back to prison
and that's why he was looking
at the kids in the park and he said he wanted to do something big before he went back to prison
for children to take so he like knew this was his like grand finale yes
yuck i mean fucking gross and then he was putting potentials in the map he was like this is so
fucked up but like he was like it sounds like he was thinking like a buffet of children before
like a bucket list it's so disturbing yes a list yeah he was like i need and then he said he felt
entitled to hurting someone else so he would stalk these families looking for an ideal
situation felt entitled to hurting them as like yeah there's no ration you can't make no no no
so he stopped at all these waypoints but at each stop he felt that it wasn't right because something
about the plan wasn't working the way it was supposed to he'd finally actually given up when
he passed wolf lodge and saw two kids turned out to be dylan and shasta playing in the front yard
and he said those are those are my ideal situation yuck yuck he staked out the house for days it was
pretty rural far from the nearest neighbor with the interstate as a very quick escape route
and in his eyes the home and family were perfect um and he was like great found it so shasta
continued to share information with detectives about joseph and she also reported on details
of other crimes joseph had described to her because she was like i don't know i don't know
because he confided in her idiot an eight-year-old detectives worked with fbi major crimes against
children unit which believed the crimes description matched details from the 1997 murder of 10-year-old
anthony martinez on april 4th 1997 tony was playing outside with friends and his younger
brother marcos in beaumont california marcos was in kindergarten and tony was in fourth grade
according to an adult interview with marcos a man approached them and said he needed help
finding his lost cat he showed them a photo and offered them each a dollar for helping him search
the boys followed him into a nearby alley where of course there was no cat and when the boys were
ready to give up the man
who turns out to be joseph duncan brandished a knife and marcos knew he was in danger
joseph reached for marcos uh the younger brother trying to grab him but tony the fourth grader
put himself in between them protected his little brother joseph threw tony into a vehicle and sped
off and left marcos there rescued basically he basically like took the bullet for his younger
brother it's just it's just something else um a massive search effort was launched to find tony
tony and marcos's mother diana reed recalled it's just chaos chaos in your head everywhere you look
is chaos 15 days later a ranger noticed unusual vulture activity in a canyon 60 miles outside
of beaumont and following the vultures discovered tony's remains
but tony's family were left with no answers for eight years until detectives had joseph in custody
now for the green murders and abduction when detectives visited joseph he said i bet you're
here about martinez and they were like sure are joseph told them that tony was not the first child
he abducted and murdered the year before he had also taken 11 year old sammy joe white and her
half-sister
you
to the police but there was no enormous search for sammy joe white and her half-sister sammy joe white
by authorities because the family was native they were living in unstable housing in a neighborhood
that was looked down upon uh poverty drugs sex work they lived in this motel and police said
oh they're probably runaways so great okay it was oldest time yeah actually in a lot of the
coverage of this case they don't even get mentioned oh it's like he literally killed
these two children but okay that's great super um so there is a lot of information about sammy joe white and her half-sister
there's no way these were runaways um but of course nobody really wanted to believe that they were only nine eleven years old they were obviously in danger two years later in 1998 a man staying on an abandoned property in bothell washington discovered the girl's skeletal remains so it was known that they were dead but it was not known what had happened to them sammy joe's grandmother told the seattle times the unknowing was the hardest were they tortured were they treated right there's no clues no nothing they don't know who did it like you know until eight years later
investigators named no suspects or persons of interest the case grew cold um and people often comment that
yeah they've been left out of documentaries and reports about joseph duncan even though all his
other crimes are included so that's just extra disturbing somehow and so no not well
to also have wondered for years and years and years if your kids were tortured and then you
find out that they are and you're still being and that it's not even being given attention then
totally
like you're not even being like validated in that yeah yeah 100 reports that cover joseph's trial
often detail statements made by other parents but statements made about carmen and sammy
joe are like vague and non-existent um in october of 2006 joseph duncan pleaded guilty to the
murders of brenda mark and slade he dismissed his attorneys and represented himself so you were
really you were onto it you were onto it so hard i should have just like been like yeah go off because
i don't think i realized how obvious it became but yeah the second that i the second that he was
trusting an eight-year-old because she was somehow able to feed his ego was true because she figured
out how to like thank you this is fucking fragile ego totally 100 totally yeah good point so he
dismissed his attorneys represented himself also pleaded guilty to federal kidnapping charges
prosecutors sought the death penalty but based on his pleas he would serve at least life in prison
he he argued that like oh it's only proved that i'm dangerous to children but not like whether
if he's just let's just say his defense didn't go very well your honor you don't get it yeah
like what the fuck are you talking about your honor i'm only half a monster because half the
people have to be worried about me don't you understand but prosecutors argued that his
past crimes demonstrated a pattern of violence against children that would not end and he might
perpetuate this and let's not forget the like yes he's only um sexually attacking children but he
also has physically killed all ages of every but every exactly it's like what do you mean
indiscriminately like everyone's unsafe around you what's the problem exactly on yes amen on
august 27 2008 a jury sentenced joseph duncan to three death sentences for
dylan's murder he was never charged for the abduction and murder of carmen and sammy joe
but in 2011 he pled guilty in california to the murder of 10 year old tony martinez
and received two life sentences for that at a memorial ceremony 20 years after tony's death
his mother diana remembered how supported they were by their community when tony went missing
which i think is something that's often missing in these cases when it's like
families feel like totally stranded and clueless and like the authorities can only say so much and
that's when like you need that community but i think so many times that's missing in these
cases um so in march of 2021 joseph died in prison of cancer um tony martinez's mother said the sun
is brighter today and my soul is lighter shasta made a written statement which said for so long
i've been struggling with hate towards that man today i woke up feeling my feeling like my soul
was finally free i hope other people affected by joseph duncan were able to wake up feeling the
same way
but shasta did struggle afterwards as
anyone would um she was getting so much attention um she would go to the grocery store and people
would stop her and be like oh my god are you shasta like what happened you know and it's like
and like even i what the fuck even the nicest of 10 of intentions of like oh thank god you're safe
now it's like your brother's in a better place it's like fuck you you know she heard it all
but and by saying even
you know we're so glad we found you you are reminding her that she was once missing yeah and
and then the whole story all over again like you're and also she got herself found you know
like yeah exactly uh yeah totally it's so the this gets worse the therapist that she was seeing
that she really liked and trusted was caught telling people about shasta's appointments and
the things she was sharing in therapy fucking jail time no fucking jail holy shit after that
shasta had to see a new counselor and she just got really sick of just talking about this every week
and she just wanted to be like normal right and she began to struggle with substance use disorder
she wanted to feel like a different person and also how do you trust that other therapist after
how could you trust any therapist at this point totally um she said when everyone else gave up
on her her father was the only one who stood by her side and she called him her hero through all
of her struggles she did eventually receive the support she needed to become sober and start
recovering during a stay in a juvenile corrections program and then when she became pregnant with her
first son she decided to make a change and build a stable happy life for herself and her baby
she was married in 2018 and said she was finally moving forward with her life but she still has
photos of slade of her mother and mark hanging up at home but she tells her sons that they had
an uncle and grandparents who aren't alive anymore but are in heaven she said that one of her sons
lorenzo reminds her of dylan she said dylan was a gentle soul he was my best friend lorenzo has the
same habits my brother had like playing with my hair oh so that fucked me up majorly this week
you could say that's why you drink i mean that's um that's fucking dark and bad it's a given yeah
that's a given the crime is why is always why i drink i never said but
yeah that one was a doozy that one was like
i mean it just it just kept getting worse you know so um

it was a heavy hitter and uh for those who stayed thank you for for listening all the way through
um i was supposed to prepare something a gentle landing for us and i
forgot so you were supposed to prepare a gentle landing what do you mean well remember i said we
should have something to like oh oh distract us by the end and you have your coffee i just have
water i don't have anything exciting do you have like any exciting news any like um fun facts in
your life i i would do the gentle landing but i feel like i i really um upstaged you earlier quite
a lot so am i'm literally just lying in my bed i got nothing to upstage you with so you might as
well upstage me um no i don't really have anything going on um
leona has picture day um cute what's the alpha that's exciting she has this like retro ma um my
mother-in-law sherry bought her this like retro mod like it's so cute it's like bell bottoms and
it's like striped like vertically it's from like old navy but it's like precious it's so fashionable
in like this way where it's so funny to see a four-year-old like feeling herself in her outfit
it um so yeah it's very cute very cute what's she into these days purple glitter unicorns
me too yeah yeah all the things where i was like we're gonna be so gender neutral and she's like
sparkly rainbow unicorns and i'm like wow it really just you just don't know no you just
never know i i salute you for trying with the neutrality i sure tried with the green and she's
like um actually iridescent purple only and i'm like got it meanwhile earlier remember i showed
you that uh that picture of the um the onesie that i bought oh yes not for myself for my maybe
future kid yeah um i was because it's like neon green and neon pink and everything and my first
thought was like if i have a son he'd look fly as shit unless hell yeah who knows if i have a
daughter she'd look fly as shit i mean seriously
it's like that's kick-ass thrifted but my first thought of course i'm constantly having to unpack
i was like i was like oh it's pink and i was like well anyone can obviously wear that and i was like
they would both look so sick it was um but everly was such an impulse purchase and but i uh was like
this is anything's gender neutral if you just believe in it hard enough well exactly so now
i'm like let's fucking go did you think um leona will at all have like a tomboy phase or she's
currently showing signs of just being miss no i think she's gonna swing real
no i think she's gonna swing really hard also in the other direction only because when she
like i think this was a really hard swing when she started preschool because she's like oh other
girls and other like kids and you know she's like i love those things and i think there's always
inevitably the swing back of like i don't like pink anymore you know i just feel like that's
inevitable i wonder what's gonna be uncool when she is i know i'm just like riding the waves of
like what's cool today you know it's so funny um so yeah it's going to be a lot of fun i'm just
kind of delightful to watch precious yeah well uh next time you see me i might be in

me swatting at mosquitoes the whole time also i'm asking you publicly and last minute so you
don't have to have a suggestion but do you have a suggestion for 500 for the topic i actually came
up with something already for you that i'm not sure if it's going to be a good idea but i'm
i had to brainstorm for a while because i was like i anyway so but i don't but i haven't even
thought the other way around um no i know that's not helpful i'll figure it out i guess i well i
can think about it i haven't thought about it i don't know you're okay i can brainstorm it if you
want no it's i i mean i was because i uh other people have also written in their suggestions
which is really helpful okay that's good what about like you know i don't know i don't know
yeah uh hmm well i wanted to do like cowboy today and then it ends up not happening so i feel like
i feel like i owe you a good one and in two episodes from now is a good reason to have a
good one that feels like it could be really fun a cowboy ghost one day i'll find him again he's
so elusive and mysterious he just walks into the sunset why do you think i'm just yearning for him
