E494 The Butt Curtain Speakeasy and the Batman Hatman

The episode blends personal storytelling with light-hearted humor, exploring topics ranging from custom gifts to family relationships and unexpected encounters. The host recounts wearing custom Zazzle pants with Hank’s face, celebrating the platform’s creativity in personalized gifts, and reflects on a forgotten mug that sparked a moment of self-awareness. A visit to the dog park introduces concerns about pet safety, highlighting the importance of pet health insurance, especially for unexpected incidents. The host describes drinking London Fog as a ritual tied to emotional and reflective moments, while a surreal Walmart encounter with a German-speaking woman named Inga underscores themes of connection and empathy. A detailed story about strained and improving communication with their mother reveals the value of intentional, shorter conversations. These anecdotes are woven together with humor and warmth, illustrating how small, everyday interactions—like a spliced drink, a grocery store stumble, or a phone call—can become meaningful and memorable. The episode ends on a note of appreciation for human connection, whether through shared experiences, family bonds, or spontaneous kindness, reinforcing the idea that life’s most ordinary moments often hold the deepest emotional resonance.

hello and welcome to and that's why we drink m has been doing a whirly motion over there and i just i'm just dying to know what are you sipping um i'm sipping i well actually oh i left it in the fridge i was gonna do a twofer um i'm drinking a london fog fantastic and uh i'm kind of bringing back the liquid deaths right now my little lds and okay that's interesting how did this happen i haven't i feel like i've been off the off the rate they've been off my radar you don't know how it happened i went to see wine and crime last night i was about to say i saw this so weird i saw like uh i think it was steve ray morse posted with like uh she was holding one in her and i was like i haven't had a liquid death in a while and i thought that this morning literally see that's wow i think it was because we haven't been in a green room in a while and i think okay that's probably why and also like a venue like a theater venue where they serve them and so uh they let us go hang out in the green room before the show and they were i i heard amanda or someone say like oh do you want to water and like open up like the green room fridge and it was just like a green room fridge and i was like oh do you want to water like cans and cans and cans and i was like i think i'm gonna get back into this now oh this old thing yeah i think it was jaded because we talk about it so much and they've never offered us a single really personal kind of like attack personally attacked i was like i we could help each other so much especially on and that's why we drink we're neither of us drink you know i'm saying like right but like they don't need the help is what we've learned over the years and like i think um when you called them a small business and then it was like like a multi-million dollar corporation that's when we really lost the plot a little bit i you know i mostly because they were new to me i assumed what i was like i know about all types of water this is new to me and therefore i mean yeah it was smaller back then you know than it is now it's only like a one million dollar business instead of like yeah yeah exactly like small potatoes yeah yeah well that's exciting so you don't have that but what so oh but you got your london fog so i got my london fog the other one it's she's chilling in the fridge that'll be my post record drink now in your green room fridge my my very white room fridge yeah yeah there you go um so i drink that and then i also have a backup l lf i i think that's gonna be my dog park drink later oh dog park drink you got that dog in you so uh what are you drinking um well before the show m was like i gotta lick the lid real quick i acted judgmental but now i'm like wait you gotta lick the lid i guess so and it's now on air but no i'm not gonna do that if you do it you're gonna be like oh my god i'm gonna be like oh my god i'm i still have a little left on mine we can just lick together okay i'm making sure my address no wait actually this is this is okay are you ready yeah tell me there's a flap now you know good and well i'm so sorry the word flap it might as well be the word moist especially when you put them together moist flaps oh my god sorry are we looking together or what well now look at what i've had what i have to work with and i don't feel really like drawn to be the flap christine don't be shy don't be shy all right you sick fucks better not do anything with that the the fan art's gonna go nutty um anyway what else is in there besides peanut butter are you just licking a jar of peanut butter the peanut butter flap oh right a pb flap um no it's my smoothie that looks so pretty look that is beautiful and then i did that stupid allergy test and i'm so mad because what'd you find out i'd already submitted it and then everyone was like guys or christine that doesn't work and i was like i know but i shouldn't have said it because i already know i'm gonna get that feedback and then i got the thing and it was basically the four ingredients that i had that are in this smoothie and i was like well i just ate that i don't think i'm allergic to a smoothie i mean i stopped drinking it and then tried again i'm like it doesn't have any effect so i think it just kind of like tracked what i had just been eating sure the fast past few days so it was like you're allergic to peanut butter to raspberries and i'm like what and like um one other really random thing where i was like that's not a food i eat like ever i don't know it's just strange and so i felt a little bit like disheartened by that um so i'm back to my smoothie game because fuck that you know i found out speaking of allergy tests nothing about myself but um i think i'm the last person on earth who still watches jackass and hey can i confirm something you are absolutely the last person on it the last person on earth is the people on the treadmill who forgot their airpods and the gym only plays mtv i well i for a while i don't know what was going on i was doing something mindless a puzzle or something and i was like i just need something that i'm not really going to pay attention to but i need the background sound and jackass just the sound i didn't like go searching for it it was in it was like as a suggestion for whatever reason i don't know what my algorithm thinks of me but it was right because i pressed play and i went i don't totally hate this you fucking pegged apparently i um i like to be fair i don't like think their humor is funny or anything but like i don't mind watching people kind of get hurt like i i don't know there's something about it kind of like your vibe yeah i'm just kind of like oh well like at least at least not me um but i found out you're like an old like grandma like well i was just these kids these kids these days at least at least it's not me my johnny would never no i mean i like the the gross ones i can't i can't do but like just watching them hurt themselves i don't know what so like just like i'll just suck myself into that it's like a teenage boy i found out that like they'll do obviously such insane dangerous dangerous dangerous things and but they also take an allergy test to make sure that like if they do any stunts with like bees that they like don't get stung if they i was like this that's the one fucking caveat is to see if you're allergic to actually medical legal is going to be real pissed if we let you um launch off a skateboard and break your femur in half but then an ant crawls over you literally like there's one guy who apparently is like severely allergic to bees but then they're like anyway why don't you just go like jump off a fucking cliff without a helmet sorry the bees are out uh how do you feel about really tall heights like fair toss-up anyway um wow you said allergy and i i i just learned that last night i was like we learned you're watching jackass that's funny it is shocking so yeah maybe that's i mean i don't know where to go from here uh why do you oh is that why you drink or no that's just about your smoothie what do you why do you drink well there's so many reasons i woke up to the sound and i had a text on my phone for my mom that said there if there's a man in your chimney and i was like yeah there's a man in my so my brother said he said was it the end of december and i said what like i literally was like what do you mean was it the end of december and he's like the end of december and i was like what he's like when christmas is and i was like oh no it wasn't it was last night and i heard this pounding sound it was not last night it was like 8 a.m too far too early for me um might have been middle of the night and i just hear this like pounding banging clanging. Yeah. There's a man in my chimney and it's not santa and he's just there to fuck up my morning i guess um but wait hold on it cut out who was it not all i heard was it's not santa i don't think it cut out i forgot to say it's just a guy working on the house oh i guess okay my mom just hired him and was like he's in the chimney she had to know what she was saying with that that's way too silly well she just left for germany and they're still here and he's still in the walls or something and i keep hearing sounds but the electric electricity is back on it was off for a minute and i was actually a little worried but it's back and they're on the roof and we're really high up so i'm if i see anything fall i'm gonna have a panic attack you'll finally have my moment i have when the door dash people show up like oh my god yeah yeah yours is much more valid yeah well yeah it's just um it's just um what is it he's a little bit of a jump scare but um but yeah i also drink because i thought my name was on this and i was like oh they spelled my name wrong oh my god oh my god they called me beauty and then i went oh no that's the name of the smoothie oh my god does beauty and sharpie on the top that hurts extra when it's like oh they weren't calling me beautiful and then no i really i felt like a little bit like charmed for a moment you know yeah i'd be like oh my god you too you too should i write them back i does it matter do you think they care if i lick the lid i met do you think you can see the word beauty when i lick the lid because that's gonna cost more money that's gonna cost extra for you freaks you know what test it see what they do okay i will say the straw does every time you do that it looks like you're just slurping on celery from really from the distance it just i also hank always has a stick of celery in his mouth so i think i'm just used to it but give me that spit it out it's literally his like he won't do anything anymore without celery or a carrot that's like very cute it's extremely cute it's cute until we don't have any celery or carrots and then i'm like for bed anyway why do you drink do we know do we know do we know um no i drink because what what's what's going on let me just tell you about my day-to-day i have this i have like three stupid phone calls i have to do one is ew with my like my mom i owe her a phone call and i know it'll just take an eternity um which love you mom but um it's gonna not be a quick one we've recently had a conversation where we shook hands on trying to agree to make the phone calls shorter because here's my thing and i'm absolutely just gonna like yeah let's go let's get into it my mom they're texting me that there's a man in my chimney at 8 a.m so like i'm ready to fucking see what's up on the other side of this perfect coin well what's going on with linda i and i say this all with love mom but you can't stop me either um why did i wear a white sweatshirt why do i own a white sweatshirt why do you own one yeah that's a better question i have no clue what the fuck did you just say um um what did i say i said yeah it made me spit my fucking drink out and i'm upset and i don't even remember what it was now you said oh i said she can't stop me from what i'm about to say yeah what the fuck i just spit my drink out everywhere well i have the stereotypical just stereotypical jewish new york mother who like just it's the like a phone call where i will answer a phone and i will tell i won't even say hello yet i'll say you have five minutes i'll give her a timer immediately you're just past the pleasantries now at this point like truly if i don't sometimes the phone call goes on for like two and a half hours and i'm like it's the middle of the day and then of course because she thinks like this are you talking or is she just talking like what's the it's not a 50 50 split i'll tell you that um okay it's uh i'm not talking i wonder is that useful for you or are you like i wish i could talk more you like at least i'm not talking you know um interesting because i i feel like i i'm ready for the conversation to be done after a half an hour and so after that half an hour mark i'm not speaking one because she's telling me what's going on in her life but also because like i've i have my battery has burnt out so i it's it's really not a fair argument for me my mom is going to say like we talked about this a lot but i'm not talking about it because i'm not talking about it we talked for two and a half hours and you don't talk and like i wish you would talk and so i'm i'm gonna say you're right mom i don't i understand that's on me but um i understand one of the things that we shook hands on is i was like if you call me less or if you call me more but with a less time i will be a lot more engaging in those periods but like if you're calling me once a week and expecting a three-hour conversation or two-hour conversation with me i i don't have enough to update you on and then like for the next hour i look like an ass because i'm like not engaging at all is she a texter or not really oh the texting oh we had to shake hands on that too um wow i'm clearly just opening a can of worms here anyway my and i i'm very lucky to have a mom who wants to like talk with me and all that but like i don't have enough material for two hours a week like i most of my life i'm sitting here i've got a dog i've got allison we're not leaving the house i i don't and she's retired and she's going here and there she literally told me last time i talked to her that for the next full calendar year she's only going to be home for like eight days i was like oh my christ i was like how does she find time to call you literally okay so now you're just giving her ammo because she's gonna be like i'm doing all this stuff and i can find things to talk about but wow anyway so uh i'm i'm excited to try out this new method because i do want to talk to her more often i just i just and the method is more frequency fewer word fewer yeah long shorter periods well then i also do like the like annoying kid thing where like i'm in my 30s but act like i'm a teenager where like i see my mom call and i i'm like oh that's gonna take two hours i can't right now and then i just forget to call her back and so then i never call her so i was like if i know that when i answer the phone i will be doing something else in a half an hour i will answer the phone but like i just never know and i i don't want to get like sucked into something um and she was very receptive and we shook hands and i am excited for this new chapter in our conversation congratulations that is a big step thank you it's a bold step and it's also on me i need to answer the phone more but i need to trust that it's the back it's gonna be a dance it's gonna be a dance yeah anyway yeah i do love you mom i'm sorry if i embarrassed you but i am excited to talk to you more just i think a lot of people would love to talk to linda uh if you needed a moment away from the phone you know that's true i could just go on instagram live and just put her on speakerphone and be like take it away i was gonna say oh my god i didn't even think of that that's a great idea that actually is a great idea it's like if you want to my mom needs someone to talk to you guys want to talk to my mom let's just make that just for this podcast like you can just stop just be quiet and just hold the phone up and then like we'll just have two hours it's beautiful actually that's actually not a bad idea i'm sure she would love a podcast gonna be drained because it feels like i'm gonna be have to step in you know as the co-host as like i don't know that's fine in in another life she should have been a podcaster because yeah maybe this is maybe this is her future mom oh you're listening what did i just say can you imagine if her and i started a podcast where it instead of having phone calls kind of what i'm pitching right this very minute i'm kind of into it she just updates me in front of everybody so then everyone holds both of us accountable now i don't hate that i don't hate that either as like um as the occasional reality television viewer i feel like that could be really messy i mean i will say the things that she's talking to me about are interesting i just like i've got nothing like i have just nothing in the chamber so um actually then maybe we could all just enjoy anyway yeah let me know if you want a linda gossip session i do um anyway i feel like i like was a bad child by by airing all that however no i mean the end that's why i drank i guess oh fantastic well um i hope your l foggy is good um i'm eating my raw energy balls girl that's i'm i i say it only because literally on here it says raw energy balls what do you want from me that's i'm glad you showed like what yeah it's like upsetting right it's not okay you're welcome i don't know why anyone's like pitching something as balls like we couldn't just call those like rounds or circles or pops what was the first what was the first round rounds i heard it too i've got my energy round okay to be fair this is not a good defense but as i'm going through i'm peeling through all my family old recipes i guess rounds was a thing where it was like circle pastries or circles it was okay clearly i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know about this clearly nobody else did either and that's why we have phased the phrase out so can i can i tell you something that weird that happened yesterday god please my brother picked me up and took me like to the liminal parts of kentucky where things are just kind of like back roads and everything's an antique shop except it's also like a farm stand and it's also someone's house and you're like where am i um and we were just bopping around and um he he was like oh i have to pick up i have to run an errand and so we stopped at a walmart and i was like i'm gonna go buy some snacks while you pick up the photos from like the photo counter or whatever and it's like a super walmart so i'm like lost i'm already like overwhelmed and i'm wandering around and i'm like we're now i'm really in a liminal space because we found like miller light flavored pringles and i'm like i hate this place like get me out of here most kentucky shit i've ever heard it was and i just felt like oh god and then all of a sudden this person approaches and i'm like oh god someone's gonna talk to me and she goes um excuse me i can't find the cleaner for the windows and i was like and she looked like she's about to cry and i was like I'm sorry what and she was like I'm trying to clean the windows I need something to clean the windows and we were in like a cleaning aisle but it was like every color every fucking like oxy clean version you know you're just like over and she looked like she was about to cry and she was probably like this I don't know in her 50s this woman this blonde woman and I'm like okay okay let me help you and I'm like I start walking with her and I'm like looking around I'm like I don't see it either and I'm like where are you from she's like Germany I'm like oh hell yeah jackpot boy and i literally spit around i go she was like what and i said like yeah and i just fucking like went and i was like i don't know where this came from but i was like that's so good and i was like ah my brother i was like my brother's here he speaks german like i was like holy shit this is crazy um and then i was like hold on follow me and she was like she started speaking german she's like you can understand me and i was like yes and she's like i've lived here a year um she's like i've lived here a year and she's like i'm so she said in german i'm so overstimulated i was like girl i've lived here my whole life and i'm so overstimulated inside a super walmart don't worry about it is this a weird question because i don't want to be like oh because you speak german and she speaks german like i'm not trying to like yeah yeah but but did you like just find your mom a friend like could she like have a buddy i would never do that to inga i i told inga like please just stay stay away from me you can kind of come near me but like the rest of us please we're it's dangerous out there sometimes a man will just be in the chimney it's like you never know what to do no but so then like near the end i was like i was like this is so crazy like i i don't like i've been really like at home a lot in a very hermit phase i don't like go to walmart i don't know the whole thing was just so strange and like surreal and then i found my brother and he's like where are the snacks and i was like well i had to find help inga find the windex and he was like what the fuck like it was just a weird day but so then um we found the windex and i was like um like even christina like what's your name and she was like i'm inga and i was like oh my god i can't believe i just met someone named inga and it was so weird and i just anyway hi inga wherever you are if you ever hear this but say it in german so she knows what's going on i think oh no she speaks english she does okay okay okay yeah but she was just like i just spun around when like i speak german and she was like what like she was so shocked and she's like you're the first person who's pronounced my name correctly since i moved since i moved to germany and she's like you're the first person who's pronounced my name correctly to cincinnati to town or whatever and i was like oh well did you like at least pat yourself on the back for being like like you were clearly like a little angel i felt like a little german angel and i was like i'm so happy she felt like like like i could she could come up to me you know i don't know i just felt very um i was like i must have a nice inviting aura because she really looks like she's about to cry but no that's so nice that like you were like placed right there she clearly needed help odd and then yeah my brother's like where are the snacks and i was like they have to get that i can't think of anything more american than like if you like beer and chips wait till you try some beer flavored chips my brother goes oh sick do you think they're vegan and i'm like no i don't think i don't think that they're i promise you they're not and they aren't so yeah that's so that's the sickest part is the only person who would eat them is my brother and he's vegan now and so he's like he like we found cinnamon root beer flavored cinnamon toast crunch at walmart and he was like that sounds delicious and i'm like you're fucking sick but like he's a reason you're like the world needs to protect you from this i think once you're maybe i don't know if this is true but i'm imagining if i went vegan all of a sudden anything ridiculous that i couldn't taste i would just like no it's not even that he's just sick like that like he's like i don't miss anything but i would eat right your cinnamon toast crunch i'm like you fuck i can't even imagine that flavor palette i can't even imagine it well that's very sweet i'm glad that that happened for you and like a little guardian angel i was like this is such a fun little city you know that's so fun i mean meanwhile i'm just like i sound like a petulant child being like walmart and didn't even manage to pick up a box of pretzels so you know do you have our wins a go-to when you go to walmart you're like i'm gonna buy this no i like rarely go to a walmart we didn't really have one near us growing up like so i just i'm i'm not really in a wall well apparently and i'm so out of the zone i don't even know what they sell anymore miller's light pringles i mean the fuck am i supposed to nobody counter counter that with nobody knew you're safe thank you um i grew up in in college we i was right next to a 24-hour yeah that would have done it if i had one near me but i lived in dc so like there was no walmart nearby but sure that would have done it for sure well christine it's time for me to tell you a story oh wait no it's not i have to take my meds and this is a reminder to everybody that you should take oh fuck well oh fuck i haven't taken my meds or oh fuck can we get going and i no oh fuck i haven't taken my meds oops i just i saw them sitting here and i was like what are they doing and i went oh yeah that was to remind myself oh yeah i'm supposed to take that okay everyone if you're not taking your meds you still have to drink some water and on the count of three we're all gonna do that ready i'm gonna eat my raw energy ball one two three yay we're all healthy okay proud of you so this story take my meds later remind me at the intermission to take your to take your meds okay we'll do a b team at the end thank you a yappy hour encore for all the people it's like for all the kids who used to run the mile but walk it like me me for sure and you there wasn't a chance i did not wake up thinking i'm gonna run this and see what happens what do these people think i'm gonna actually do that you know i'm gonna actually try that now that my mom is married to a uh former gym teacher that's right i get to ask him all the questions that we've always wanted to know the answers to what does he have to say for himself i'm like you can't possibly think that was gonna work you just make me run a mile like what's wrong with you do they really know the secret about the period lying about your period every week i'm sure he does he has a daughter yeah for sure oh okay um but i've said this before but my favorite thing about when he met my friends and family i didn't know this at the time but before they became before my friends became my little kids they actually went to the school where he was the gym teacher and so when they met him for the first time thinking it was just like my mom has a new boyfriend he came over to like drink with everybody and we were all like post-college and he walks in and all my friends at the same time went mr sherman is dating your mom my god that must have been such a weird mr sherman and they were like he's like you can call me tom and they're like that's okay mr sherman no no we will not be doing that and uh but they finally got their revenge on their gym teacher because they were like you want to impress us mr sherman you run a fucking mile go seriously i'll time it oh you got cramps today yeah likely story but anyway no i i don't know that man also he's in his 60s and he looks i mean he's still an active physical contact hockey player every week like he was meant to be a gym teacher it's kind of free yeah um let's move on i like we've been doing this for a half an hour jesus okay yeah just we're nailing it i'm sorry i just i haven't talked to you in so long i'm just feeling i already spit my drink out it's been like quite a doozy of an episode so far it's a lot of me complaining about my family something's wrong with me i need to take a nap um i think you just haven't talked to me in a while you're like i have so much to complain about about my family i mean i get it listen i'm biting my tongue over here i just yeah it's just the chimney is as far as we're gonna go i've got more but i'll keep it i'll keep it tucked in for now yeah we'll keep that for for the some for something else for the for the 60 minutes special they do okay my story today is in wisconsin only when he's gonna get any of this fucking information out of me whoa barbara walters over my dead body oh i think uh i don't know who i would even want to interview me if i could do a tell-all maybe chris hansen but not because i'm a predator he's only ever interviewed predators so maybe i shouldn't chris hansen is your fucking interviewer what's wrong with you i just love that man but i'm thinking about it he has not interviewed anyone who isn't a predator the questions he would ask would be like he'd be like what's your name and also oh sorry i'm not supposed to talk to you like that i'm trying to he wouldn't be able to do it i'd be like it's new for all of us chris hansen that's okay i'd be like i'm sorry i'm sorry well folks it's time for me to tell you again about my financial illiteracy my first encounters with a bank is when my mom said you're going to college here's a debit card don't disappoint me and then story today is in madison wisconsin and this is the fess hotel although it is now the great dane pub oh that sounds fun i like a pub i like when it's named after a dog i love a pub um what would geo be as a pub if not great dane pub would it be a god little prince my little mama's little prince pub that's so sweet because he's just such a little prince oh mommy's little prince oh he'd be so annoying i have a shirt that says bubby's little matzo ball could we get him a shirt that says mommy's little prince for sure and it would be um they'd have something about like um his butt curtain you know like it would be a whole thing we could call oh and then the basement like the the little speakeasy in the basement's called um it's called the butt curtain that's incredible you got to go to the basement and it's called the butt curtain that's incredible like into the speakeasy that's incredible it's gonna be good stuff oh man i really i can't have a food truck outside is mama's little matzo ball right the food truck yeah i'm telling you mama's little matzo ball is gonna be there i'm gonna be in the butt curtain for sure i'll meet you at i'll meet you in the butt curtain we'll always have the butt curtain you know um you know to get in you have to access it via a big shaggy curtain of course and there's there's got to be a secret word um yeah that's good so this is the um great dane pub now but for a long long time it was the fess hotel it starts in the 1840s oh my this guy named george fess he immigrated to the u.s and he came to wisconsin he was a grocer and he opened a grocery store and i mean we're it's a restaurant but we're calling it apparently an eating house maybe that's what they used to call it before restaurants um but i did look up eating house and it sounded like it was just kind of like um it feels like a tavern or something that's what i thought but it sounded like the description i read it sounded more like it was a uh like a walk up stand oh like a food truck kind of yeah like when you go to like a renaissance fair and you walk up to like a thing and then they can't so it's just like like right okay so take away food but you're right eating house sounds cozier yeah whatever if we had to open an eating house today it'd be different by definition i'll tell you that it would not have any vowels in the name and it would be like eating house and it would have like omelettes and it would be like there would be like weird little um chairs that are plastic and and you trip over them because they're clear you know what i like about you what no i don't because i can't think of a one i feel like in third grade we would have done some damage in the world of like not paying attention because we'd get om it would be extremely bad i say this with love i feel like it's going to sound like an insult but it's made it's made purely out of life i think we would not get anything done because we'd come up with one idea and have to see it through it would be disastrous for everyone i feel like you'd be like oh because five seconds ago we were talking about the butt curtain pub or some shit like that and now we're on i don't remember where we went eating or whatever that's right our new in industrial chic yeah a boutique a boutique industrial chic norwegian scandinavian don't forget scandinavian eating house that's right 100 um so he opened a grocery store and an eating house which i guess is if you're a grocer and i mean why not like a deli counter two birds one stone yeah you have deli counter you have some chairs yeah i mean it's like well and the food is i know it's fresh these are this is my food this is my food um so he ended up starting out there making a grocery store and eating house but he did it right next to what is now currently the hotel so i don't know if he already had his sights set on this location or just in the in the beauty of storytelling like there's a foreshadowing happening we're like kind of yeah he's bound to just be right next door forever could be eventually after the grocery store he wanted to open a hotel and specifically a hotel for the common man oh would you never see that because i feel like every hotel is like trying to be like for the business elite boutique yeah exactly the industrial scandinavian norwegian for the business elite and we're gonna scam so many people i love it um we basically he just wanted a hotel for the common man and very conveniently or he already had his sights set on this i'm not sure the building he was working in was only two blocks from the major train station and you know how the how history loves a fucking train station train stations so he stayed in the area he's currently in and he was like if i'm building a hotel why don't i just build it right next to or above or within the same building vicinity as my grocery store my restaurant and it kind of became this weird like lego thing where he was over time just expanding expanding expanding okay okay so eventually he had a hotel and a restaurant i don't know if he stuck with the grocery store maybe that was like not worth it for him anymore um and he also because this was a time when everyone traveled by horse he underneath the hotel built 60 stables so full livery jesus okay smart um construction started in 18 in the 1850s depending on the source just the 1850s and basically this was uh the idea was for him to accommodate all classes of travelers and diners so whether you were just there to eat or if you were there to stop by for the night or the common man the common man um it's so refreshing to not have to tell you that like this was supposed to be the city's hub you know like i'm so over that so he built i think it it ended up being a hotel but i think for the first couple decades when they were doing all this construction it was more of a boarding house because it sounds like he was renting a space here a space here until eventually like 20 years later he was able to have like the full brick and mortar owned by him and it'd be a right and he had all the parking already situated underneath he sure did he had a whole parking garage really crazy that is crazy that a livery was a parking garage i was just i couldn't get my mind out of that thought of like is that a parking lot for like an early parking lot i needed to sit with that for a second um let's see okay but here's the problem because he built this whole thing i mean three three ventures three man yeah three men's dreams so far and he ends up kind of shooting himself in the foot a little bit because although it was a boarding house a livery and a restaurant it was a temperance building so there was no alcohol served here oh and i feel like if you're a curtain nope i feel like if you're parking your horse for the night like you want to have some fucking grog i mean please that's the that's the that's tell me i'm wrong that's like the the only guarantee you'd think you know surely i'm not even kidding i'd be like a long journey if there's one thing in here it's going to be beer man that's dark in fact the fest family owned this hotel for 130 years and never once offered alcohol wow they were proud of that who broke that 130 year spell because they really pissed off some ancestors i bet you well let me remind you it is now a great dane pub and brewing company oh i how could i have forgotten the exact opposite of everything they never brewing company wow yeah they're really messing with some ghosts here it was uh actually a few episodes back i don't know if you would remember this but do you remember i talked about um hatchet granny her name was carrie a nation yes carrie a name oh my god of course yes of course yes and her whole she was a big part of the temperance movement and she would go to different establishments that were serving alcohol and she would just fucking protest riot destroy yes their businesses and so this was like the only safe building in the entire town from carrie a nation jeez and it was known to be one of the only places like vip parking spot in the livery yes her incredibly sober horse was parked right up front and she was always right up front yeah it was one of the only places that she was able to stay whenever she was in wisconsin so it was the only place that she really went that she couldn't intend to destroy with a hatchet while she was there which is nice it's a fresh wow that's thoughtful of her um although the business was operating throughout its construction and it essentially took like 40 years until it was completed um the there's two fun facts i want to tell you one is that the windows on the first floor unless things have changed since these articles came out but the windows on the first floor are the same windows from the 1870s oh wow that's pretty cool thank you and then the other fun fact is i saw the uh the price of a room and i know you love uh that inflation moment yeah the room costs a dollar 40 whoa which today is still a fucking deal it was it's 48 oh wow okay and then you think about you probably get everything with that except grog yes because the only other thing i could find was that a meal there because if you're just stopping at the restaurant right a meal would cost 40 cents and wow which was basically like 15 bucks now wow it feels pricey but for an entire hotel stay and a meal it was like essentially 65 damn good deal i think it was a great deal i would do that um So in 1875, this is while we're in the middle of construction. So he actually never really got to see the Fess Hotel fully completed. But George Fess, he dies of, quote, a brain fever. Oh, no. I don't need to know. Oh, you hate to hear that. And his wife, Anna, carried on the hotel and all the expansions and for like 30 plus years was the sole proprietor of this. The legacy, the teetotaling legacy. Exactly. When she died, their son took over and the Fess Hotel actually stayed open as a family run business until the 70s, making it even then one of the city's longest running businesses. But it carried on. It's it remained a hotel, just not a family run one. They sold to a different person. Oh, I see. And it was a hotel from the 1850s to. To 1994. Damn. Yeah, it was a long hotel in the time where it was owned by somebody else. The upper floors were rented out as office storage space. So it wasn't a full hotel. But that was also around the time when the ghosts started showing up. Fun fact, the this is on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 and in 1994. This is when it became the Great Dane Pub and Brewing Company. I have to say this is the Madison. Location, because apparently it's a franchise. Oh, and they're also now a stop on the local ghost tours because they are very open about their. What a fun stop to have on a ghost tour. The Great Dane Pub. I mean, like, literally, I hope that they're right in the middle. So you can have like a little pub crawl. Right. Or you start there and have a drink. And then the tour starts. I mean, it's Wisconsin. They're probably all pubs. That's a good point. Actually, you're totally right. That cannot be the only pub on that ghost tour. Mm hmm. So this place has been haunted at least since it was a rental space upstairs. Mediums have come in and said that there are spirits everywhere. They said, like, everywhere. They like they said, like, from the mundane to the horrifying, depending on the space, there were different types of ghosts. Jesus, I don't like that. They're just so present. Yeah, there's some where I guess it's as easy as, like, they sensed an older man there asking them for the time. Which is crazy, because I'm like, I don't think you want the time. I think you want the date, babe. Like, it is. I think you want directions to the light. Whatever you're trying to get to, you're late. You're wrong. You're going the wrong way. You're late. Oh, no. But then there's also areas where it's just really rattling. Apparently, there's an attic space that has, like, one of those pull down ladders and an exterminator had to go up into the attic, which is scary on its own. Yeah. I mean, as I hear them clanging around on my roof, I'm like, it's already just dangerous. And now you throw in a haunted attic. Yeah. Game over. Mm-mm. Well, they had to go into the attic, and I guess she, like, fell to her knees and said, oh, my God, something horrible has happened here. The exterminator said that? She had a gift. There's just cockroaches everywhere. Just dead cockroaches. I was going to say, I was kind of like, it's, she probably just saw, like, an infestation and went, something horrible has happened here. And she's like, this is way beyond my scope of practice. I used to walk into my roach infested apartment all the time and go, oh, my God, something horrible has happened here. Fall to your knees. I told Allison a long time ago when we moved into this house, I said, you are not allowed to clutter your nightstand. Real rich coming from someone who keeps a lot of clutter under their nightstand. The one thing Allison had to negotiate, she was like, fine, I'm only keeping out my OCO. Oh, it's so nice. I keep mine out on the counter, too, which, like, I've put most of my stuff away. I keep it on the counter because, A, it's these beautiful glass bottles, but, like, I use it every time I shower. And I'm like, this actually, finally, I feel like my skin is actually reacting, like. The way I want it to, to a skin product. So I'm with Allison. Yeah. And she made a good choice. And it's also in, like, this beautiful glass bottle. I know. It doesn't feel like it's from your 24-hour pharmacy. It feels like it's. Totally. Very class. Yeah, it's from, I don't know. I don't know where it's from. Heaven. I don't know. Malibu, I think. So close enough. The Hyaluronic Body Serum is made for everyday use or when your skin is in need of revival, cooling, refreshing, weightless, and powerfully hydrating. So people have not only seen that man who asks for the time. Or I guess they don't see him. I kind of got the vibe that they just sense him, which is an interesting thing to sense. But people have also seen. They've also seen things like floating torsos in the basement. Yeah. Horrifying. They've also seen items violently swinging from the ceiling. So I guess like, you know how in offices people like have like a Sharpie marker taped to the wall so you don't lose it next to the bulletin board and stuff? No. Huh. But okay. I mean, I can follow that train of thought. I guess I just have never seen that before. It's like wherever you like a sign-in sheet or something and they'll just like tape a Sharpie on a string or something. Like a clipboard thing or something. Yeah. Okay. I got you. I got you. Yeah. So apparently in the middle of the night, a manager was in the office by herself. And all of a sudden, the marker on the string started like flipping like fucking crazy all by itself. And then someone asked her what she did in response. And she was like, I laughed and went back to fucking work because I don't, I have a job. I have to have this job. In a storage space below in the basement, there's an area that the staff literally call the spooky room. Oh, no. Because it is so oppressive. And dark and scary that not only do some staff refuse to go in there, but people have gotten the job, walked into the spooky room and quit their fucking job. Yeah. I mean, if people are falling to their knees just doing a regular project and being like, I can't even stand it in here. Like, I can't imagine. It's got to feel funky in there. What is the closest? Like, what's like the most dark, oppressive, haunted thing you've experienced? Oh, that's a great question. I think it's somewhere we went. I agree. I'm trying to think of where. What would you say? Do you have an answer? I feel like every time I'm put in a dark, oppressive, haunted space, I think this is the worst. Oh, yeah, for sure. For sure. But, I mean, that first time alone in the basement at Bobby Mackey's was something else. I think that's got to be my answer. Like, that was the scariest. I think the way we, like, then pitched it more to be more fun. But, like, in the moment. Like, that was genuinely, I was like, I'm going to die in this Bobby Mackey fucking basement. Like, yeah. You know what's so funny is, though, like. That music playing. I mean, I'm just going to start screaming right now, frankly. Hours later, though, I would say the complete opposite. That that was the safest I've ever felt was in the basement of Bobby Mackey's. Yeah, it almost, like, didn't end up feeling as terrible afterward. Like, in the moment, I was like, I'm going to die in this fucking basement. And then, like, I mean, there was, like, a thing from the Proud Boys on the table. We were like, where are we? I mean, we were. We were in Kentucky. So, I guess we're always just in these spaces. Wait, where did I go the other day? That thrift store? That also probably felt very oppressive. No, I'm kidding. But the Walmart. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wind Exile. I mean, like, if I saw some beer Pringles in Bobby Mackey's, I would not be surprised. Deeply haunting. Yeah, I think. But I'm trying to think of, like, if there was a place where, like, one of the, I feel like outside can sometimes be, I don't know if you agree with that, one of the scariest. Are you talking about that tour? What tour am I talking about? I feel like I can't. My brain won't pull up. No, no, no. The tour that, the ghost tour that you and I went on in Kentucky and you were, like, all fucking weird about that one building. That's what I mean. Like, I think my brain wouldn't conjure it. Like, I was like, I need you to tell me. You, like, wouldn't look at the building. You're like, I can't be over here. I can't be here. Oh, I don't. Every time I drive past it, I don't look at it. I don't like to say the name of it. And that's where Batman walked by, which is now you're arguably the safest you'll ever be, but you couldn't even look at that building. Yeah, he was like my hat. I think I missed. I didn't speak much English as a child, so. Hatman? No, Batman. Oh, my God. Well, I mean, I really, and I don't know if it was because we were. That building fucked me up, man. And I still drive past it and I still won't look at it. And I'm not going to say the name of it. So don't even ask people. I feel like. Gives me the creeps. When we were at Bobby Mackey's in the. I mean, that. That whole place felt really fucking creepy and scary. And I don't know if it was because it was just abandoned or if it was because we were like in the middle of nowhere and no one was coming to help. Like. Yeah. Or because moments before we got there, someone was like hiding in there and the police had to come get him. Yeah, that could have been part of the distress. I think that was part of the stress. I feel like. But that basement really. I mean, for people who never got a chance to see that dungeon basement, I mean, it looks like where people truly go to die. It was like such. It's just not. And it's horrible. I don't know, though, if it was like if I was in my own head. And so that's why it was scary. I don't know if like in a spooky way, like the ghosts didn't like us yet. There was a creature down there called the crawler that this lady had told us about. Like there's a creature in this basement called the crawler. And then we literally got fucking footage of a little stick figure crawling along the walls. Like, yeah, I mean, it could have just been the vibes, but also like I think we were really. I'm telling you, though, at the end when we did that. Estes method and like I was just chatting it up with them and like all of a sudden in the air changed and like they were saying such nice things they were like we're gonna miss you through me i was a fucking channel i'm just sitting there like uh they're like having a grand old time like what do you how do you feel about us leaving soon we're bummed you know like it was so sweet like i was like i did we just become like fucking besties that's crazy you should have been there i should have been there i know i'm kind of glad i wasn't i'll be honest um i would think that's probably the best ghost i left my husk behind in that moment for a good reason i had a great time i think that was probably my favorite paranormal experience i've had yeah we got to keep that footage forever never never never it was so good it was so good i thank you uh from the bottom of my heart for being a vessel i uh couldn't have done it you're so welcome anytime i uh oh yeah so this place is just super fucking scary um they have the spooky room it's super scary it's oppressive blah blah a man is seen walking up closed off stairs and i guess the staff have tried to like stop him now they don't they just go there he goes there he goes again walking up the stairs but originally they would say like sir like that's closed off you can't be there and before they could even finish a sentence he vanished in front of them horrifying oh whoopsies uh oh in the basement and sorry the butt curtain there there are a bunch of pool tables and i guess they have racks on the sticks and people have seen the sticks knock themselves over one by one oh not for me dog and also like what a mess come on like keep it clean be respectful please get a get a grip get a grip you said it but i said it also after you and i meant it it was good it was good doubled up the pool cues the little square blue guys they've also been seen falling off the racks on their own and this is the most common haunting that happens here this thing what's up isn't the cue the what oh the cue is that thing i thought so what is the cue to you the ball the white ball the triangle the pool cues of the actual stick now i don't know if it was q or cube and i misspelled it like chalk cube like yeah because a pool cue is the like thingy yeah yeah yeah you're right but maybe i'm i think i'm wrong i don't know q or cube use your imagination um thank you did not even catch that the most common thing that happens here though is that the front desk's phone will ring from like as if other rooms are calling the front desk it'll show that calls are coming from rooms that no longer exist oh come on i guess back when it first opened they still had like switchboards like ew i hate that so the guests are still complaining from the beyond like jesus like bring me more towels oh my god that must be so annoying well the switchboard i guess they had it even after it was no longer in use i guess they just kept it around i'm guessing as decoration or something but it would still light up as if someone was trying to call them i don't love that and for years even after the switchboard was turned off and they'd switch to more modern phones certain phone lines that were completely disconnected from previous rooms would also still ring and it would say that like this room wants you yuck and to this day at the front desk the phone will ring when people know that rooms that still exist but are incredibly vacant yeah people are still calling from empty rooms yuck get out of here uh some think that the ghosts that are calling are actually george and anna fess upset by all the alcohol at what is now a pub and brewery and they're trapped in like a liminal room that's not existing anymore calling down to the front desk like get the beer out it's like whatever it takes to get all this fucking afterlife carrie a nation would be pissed carrie um so there's a ghost tour company that i've heard of called uh american ghost walks oh yeah their origin story actually comes from the great dane pub no way because the founder was there one time and asked a waitress if the place was haunted and the waitress said and i quote well i've seen at least two ghosts but you should probably talk to my manager because she's seen four not my problem and i guess that got the uh future founder of american ghost walks ghost tour company uh that got her all like jazzed up to go start creating that the company and um cool since she opened it she now has 25 locations fun fact all because of the fess hotel great dane pub and my last fun fact for you is that in 2021 there was construction going on right next to the hotel and by um some of the building next door getting destroyed more uh exterior building of the fess hotel was exposed does that make sense yes like that yes yes it does um like basically the tower next to it uh came down and so they were able to see the side of the building and all of a sudden they realized that that entire time since the other building had come up there had been a ghost sign um i don't know if it's a ghost or something but i don't know if it's a ghost or something but i don't that was preserved on the side of this building for people who don't know a ghost sign is like when you look at an old building and like you can still see the old painted advertisement my favorite thing which i i thought it was so funny that like i'm talking about ghosts and everything mentioned this ghost sign but it actually doesn't have anything to do with ghosts it's just i love that the weathered artifact made from a past vintage yeah yesteryear um but so uh of the ghost sign for you so that was hidden until 2021 it's like an original preserved sign of the hotel's ads oh my god how cool is that so yeah if it were exposed it probably would have gotten all yeah now they can like take preserve it that's sick that is so cool so it says for people it says fess hotel 75 rooms 30 baths free showers rates daily and weekly and then it says coffee coffee shop coffee something coffee and something wow yeah so that is the uh that is so and the building is so cool too i god if i ever bought a building it better have a ghost sign that's all i have to say and if there isn't i will hire scenic people to make a fake ghost sign so everyone's like oh my god what's the story there and i'll go that's for me to know you know it's a ghost sign yeah none of your business actually back up none of your business no lady in white shocking i know she only goes to the places that aren't for the common man well one good point and two no grog come on no grog she's not gonna be there with no grog like she's a lady in white why would you wait there for your like long lost husband forever without something you worked really hard on okay yeah it's a doozy and um i remember when it happened okay this is the university of idaho murders okay this is the university of idaho murders okay do you remember this nope 20 uh 22 i know the university of california sorority girl murders um so i don't know this one i don't know about idaho okay it was it was and recently well okay we'll get into it but this is this is a doozy all right so this is going to be a two-parter i'm just going to tell you in advance okay um we're in moscow idaho it's a town of roughly 26 000 residents primarily known as the city of idaho and it's a town of roughly 26 000 residents and it's a college town home to university of idaho moscow campus and thousands of students attended on campus king road is where this house is located it's an off-campus housing for students it was near the sorority and fraternity rose and campus itself so students involved in greek life often rented there 11 22 king road was one of those houses so in 2022 we had five friends sharing the house kaylee gonzavez madison maddie mogan zanna kernodle dylan mortensen and bethany funk zanna oh i just got full body chills sorry that was weird zanna had a golden doodle named murphy that she'd adopted with her ex-boyfriend and she and her ex were still friends so murphy the dog would come back and forth between their houses so murphy was often at the 11 22 king road house bethany the roommate lived on the ground floor which was also the basement i'm actually going to send you a picture of the house real quick because it shows you just like what what kind of building we're talking about um just looks pretty standard off-campus housing but it had access ground floor access from the basement like you can see there's a parking like a car park there and then it also had like second floor access because there it's on a hill oh yes i see slanted so there's like multiple entrances into the house um and that's the house where these friends lived um so there were multiple entrances um you could access bethany 's room or go up the stairs from that basement door or you could access the second floor directly zanna and dylan lived on the second floor the house was backed up against a hill so the second floor also had the ground access and there was a sliding door in the kitchen that also had access wow maddie and kaylee's rooms were on the third floor and that had a balcony which you can see there but no ground floor access right right right um kaylee and maddie had been best friends for years they met in sixth grade and quickly became inseparable um maddie was the kind and quiet one and kaylee was like the loud boisterous powerhouse they were basically like perfect counterparts um and they met as little girls their families became best friends they went to high school together and then they applied to the exact same colleges because they were like we're not even going to different colleges like that's how close they were okay so they were thrilled to attend the university of idaho together and they moved into the king road house where they could always come home to each other um they both got involved in sororities they befriended bethany dylan and lindsay didn't live with them eventually they met ethan and hunter chapin and they were members of please tell me if i'm saying this right sigma kai is that right okay they had joined sigma kai a fraternity just a few minutes walk from the house ethan and hunter were triplets and their sister maizey was also a student at university of idaho oh wow their parents were so like proud of their three kids they dropped the triplets off at campus um went to parents weekend in 2022 and they said on the way home they high-fived and said we've done it like we've raised three awesome kids and just dropped them off at college together like they're best friends um maizey hunter and ethan extremely close hunter said we were friends with everyone but we were best friends with each other that's awful i know i know like this is gonna break my heart so i'm just like okay like it's beautiful but i'm i'm already upset ethan was born first his personality he was like the boldest most magnetic one um hunter and maizey although they were all triplets obviously they looked up to him leader um kaylee and maddie were fun deeply kind people so when they joined the campus and like the group and the sororities they just clicked right in with the rest of the group zanna likewise was a wild child described by her friends who didn't know a stranger and so they all were drawn to each other but as the french friend group drew closer they noticed that ethan and zanna specifically were drawn to each other they were both like the goofiest most outgoing people in the group and um hunter ethan's brother was like they were like the same exact person um so they started dating and like fell in love immediately and they were like the forever couple you know in the friend group like there was no separating them and this was what were both their names um that was zanna x a n a and ethan and ethan okay okay and ethan's the triplet right he's the oldest of them i thought it was the other yeah yeah i just have my brain's thinking about separating him from all the other triplets oh i see yes he's the oldest yeah technically um so they would hang out at the king road house almost every day all of them um in moscow a very small town vibe um very tight-knit community november 12 2022 pretty ordinary day they got together at the king road house to hang out before school game which was like a big deal you know they took photos together outside and kaylee posted some of the photos to her instagram with the caption one lucky girl to be surrounded by these people every day and i'm going to send you the pictures because like it really this is you might remember this if you see any of these pictures i'm not sure but it was pretty um it's like all over tiktok was the biggest place that it was kind of yes i do remember this picture but i cannot place it okay well then i guess i do know about it but i i even clearly back then i didn't know it very well it was hard to avoid at the time i remember and we'll get into it but i remember actively having to avoid looking into it there was so much misinformation it was like yeah it gets crazy god they look like they're all just so happy i know like it was one of those like when you hear people talk about it they were like no they really were just having the times of their fucking lives like yeah um so this was a saturday and there was plenty for them to do even in a small town maizey's sorority was hosting a formal and she just wanted a casual fun night so she invited her brother ethan as her date you know just to like have friends over and some of his friends were like oh my god i'm gonna go to a so that evening she and her brother ethan went to the formal by 9 p.m some of their group moved to a party at sigma kai near the king roadhouse and maizey decided to call it a night and she didn't feel like partying went home to bed ethan went to sigma kai with his friends tried to persuade his sister to join them and said please come hang out we all want you here but maizey was too tired so ethan let it go and texted her love you josie was likewise uh their other friend in bed fairly early that night at her own place and she thought to herself oh there will be another party there's always another party i'm not gonna go hang out tonight and that's just very famous last words you know to hear it is while both girls went to sleep ethan partied with zianna his girlfriend and his brother hunter kaylee and maddie were likewise having a late night they hung out at a place called corner club which was a well-known sports bar in town and around 1 30 a.m the two of them left corner club and stopped at grub truck a food truck which was one of the only options to eat out in moscow after midnight so by 2 a.m all four of them were back at the king roadhouse bethany and dylan were also there they came home earlier so all five roommates were home that night bethany dylan kaylee zanna and maddie as well as ethan who was sleeping with um sleeping with i mean like sleeping in right with his yeah yeah so ethan often stayed over with zanna um they basically said he basically lived there or they said he basically lived there that's how much time he spent there um at 4 a.m a door dash driver made a delivery to zanna bethany and dylan were each in their own bedrooms dylan fell asleep but just after 4 a.m she woke up to some strange noises in the house she heard murphy bark um and that's the golden noodle and this was very unusual because this dog rarely barked so she thought like in the back of her mind like maybe kaylee's playing with the dog or dancing with the dog but then dylan thought she heard kaylee running and she thought she heard kaylee say someone was in the house but she was like half awake dylan opened her door and called out kaylee's name then shut the door called her roommates on the phone but no one answered soon after dylan opened her door again and thought she heard someone crying she thought maybe it sounded like kaylee in the second floor bathroom and remember this is the middle of the night it's like 4am she later thought it might have been zanna she wasn't sure but she heard a man say something like it's okay i'm going to help you oh my god she later said but it wasn't in like a nice way it was just weird and it was a voice i've never heard before dylan called out to kaylee again but heard nothing terrified she shut her door briefly then opened it a third time she said stood in utter silent shock as she watched a man dressed in all black walk past right past her look at her and leave through the sliding glass doors and didn't hurt her and she's the only survivor one of okay dylan told the police that he saw her this man but he didn't say anything he just walked right past they looked at each other and he just left she tried to contact her roommates by phone she didn't know who this guy was no one answered but bethany the other roommate replied from the basement just before 4 30 and said like i haven't heard anything so bethany is the only other one she can get a hold of who's in the basement wow okay and bethany just like luck i haven't heard anything yeah and she's downstairs so wow which is crazy because i thought for sure like the first floor people were the ones that were going to be in the most danger it's a little bit weird exactly it's a little bit weird it's like the ups yeah it is it is um oh god she hadn't heard anything um dylan said no one is answering i'm going to read some of the texts here because i mean it was also so recent like that's the other creepy thing is like to see all the texts and like pictures and it's all just so recent and so dylan and bethany are texting and bethany's like i haven't heard anything dylan said no one's answering i'm really confused right now bethany replied yeah dude what the fuck bethany said xander was wearing all black like you can see in the picture and dylan said um no it's like a ski mask almost like what she saw the person wearing like she said i saw someone in black and bethany was like well maybe it was xana and she's like no it was not xana this person had a ski mask bethany told dylan to make a run for it to her bedroom downstairs and she did she spent the rest of the morning uh like to her bedroom so she ran down to bethany's bedroom and they spent the rest of the morning in there um the early morning hours felt like a blur at 7 30 a.m bethany made some phone calls and she was like i don't know what to do to her parents dylan spent a few hours on instagram and snapchat and then finally just before 10 30 dylan texted kaylee and maddie are you up and there was no response just before noon dylan called another friend emily and told her that something weird had happened last night emily remembered dylan saying something like i don't really know if i was dreaming or not but i'm really scared can you come check out the house emily made a joke about bringing pepper spray because nobody was like actually worried something had happened right um she said they've had never even locked a door in this town like it's just not something you did and i i mean i remember i we had a in college it we thought someone broke in it ends up being just like the curtain rod fell but like it was a loud scary sound and so it is scary yeah and we were like kind of it turned into like a a light-hearted laughing through it before we really went out to like check what happened well they had an inside joke too about like oh sometimes like a pan would fall and we'd all be like ah and it's like oh it's just in the kitchen and you don't really think this could happen to you so of course you're playing it off being like i'll bring the pepper spray these kids are like 21 years old 20 you know like they're kids like it's just i'm glad you said that because it does get into a lot of like victim blaming later as you can imagine with the two girls not calling 9-1-1 right away just really so anyway she they were joking like sure i'll bring pepper spray haha right um so hunter johnson had stayed so hunter um johnson had stayed the night with emily so they walked over to the house together and when they arrived bethany and dylan were standing outside and hunter decided to go in josie arrived too and as soon as she went inside the house itself fell off immediately she was like something is not right as soon as she walked in hunter came back downstairs pushed josie outside with emily bethany and dylan told them to call 9-1-1 and tell the operators there was an unconscious person in the house so at 11 56 dylan made the call but she was so panicked that josie had to take over and um they repeated what hunter had said about an unconscious person but then hunter told the dispatcher that xana wasn't breathing and so now the friends are like hearing this second hand the group became overwhelmed by terror and confusion the 9-1-1 call like you can listen to it's chaotic like they're passing the phone around the dispatcher's like i need to talk to one person only i mean the kids don't these young adults do their kids they these young adults they don't know what happened so it's like they can't give much more information than like we're at the house we're confused someone needs to come but so it's just a long rambling kind of chaotic phone call the police finally arrive again like nobody thinks anything has happened maybe someone's drunk or whatever but of course as soon as they hear like someone's not breathing they send emergency services and paramedics are on their way um josie later recalled thinking that even if her friends were dead at least paramedics were coming and would be able to revive them but when the paramedics arrived they left like they turned around almost immediately and they didn't bring a single person out with them so the group is like well what's going on another friend named ava looked outside and saw police putting up caution tape and she ran over as soon as she saw emily and hunter's faces she knew something really bad had happened and she asked emily where's nana and emily barely could speak it but she just whispered she's inside and i think she's dead now hunter chapin a different hunter ethan's brother was on his way to the house from the sigma chi house and one of his frat brothers had woken him up and told him there were police at his brother's house or at his brother's girlfriend's house hunter wasn't like alarmed or surprised because this house often got noise complaints and they just assumed like oh the party had gotten too wild last night um so he said i wasn't worried ethan was six foot four and 220 pounds i was like he'll be fine when hunter got there and didn't see ethan he assumed his brother was inside helping whoever was in trouble but then he saw his friend's expressions looking at him like the world had ended he said he was in trouble and he was in trouble and he was in trouble and he was in trouble and he said hunter approached him and the other hunter approached him and told him that ethan and zanna were gone hunter asked where they'd gone to oh and the other hunter said no like i think they were murdered last night hunter called their sister maizey the other triplet who rushed over and then call he called his mom he told her that ethan and he didn't know how to tell his mom and of course how do you tell a mom that their son's dead she's at the grocery store her name's stacy she answers the phone and then he calls his mom and then he calls his mom and then he calls his mom and then her son says hunter says ethan's not here and she's like she's back in washington and she's like what do you mean and where is he and she's like he's not here and she said i don't understand and finally said well where is he and he said she said where is he and he said you don't understand ethan and zanna are not on this earth anymore that was the only way he could like bring himself to tell his mom oh my god so stacy left her car in the aisle drove home called her husband and said ethan was killed but she didn't know anything more than that and then he called his mom and said ethan was they just packed their bags and drove to town i can't like that's like a 100 year long car ride or the drive to the camp nightmare nightmare outside the house everyone was waiting for information from the police like they're just sitting basically on the road like in their pajamas like crying and waiting for any information but no one's telling them anything they're becoming frustrated and angry and then all of a sudden all their phones ring or get like a buzz there is something called a vandal alert which is the university of idaho like alert texts they receive a vandal alert to all of their phones this is the university of idaho mascot and they're referred to as a vandal so they get these vandal alerts about critical situations on campus the vandal alert told students that police were investigating a homicide on king street and this is the first that these they had heard any confirmation that this was a homicide like they had been thinking maybe if santa wasn't breathing like which they were still trying to process maybe she had had too much to drink or something and something terrible happened but now they're getting text messages from the university saying a homicide occurred inside their house and they're like all sitting outside going what oh my god and so they start kind of shouting at the police and going like it would have been nice if someone told us this before everyone knew you know at the same time um and they assumed it was xana but like bethany and dylan didn't know who had stayed over they didn't know if ethan had even slept there and they were like oh my god they're like oh my god they're like oh my god they're they didn't know if kaylee and maddie were still there and had gone to bed that night like they didn't even know how many people were still in the house if their friends were out at someone else's house they just couldn't get a hold of them then they got a second vandal alert which said moscow police continues to investigate the death of four people near campus oh fuck so now they're playing the process of elimination game of like is it this person this person this person well they were hoping at least one of them would not have been in the house but it turns out all four of them were that was how they found out that kaylee maddie xana and ethan were all four dead in the house josie began yelling at the police furious in grief that nobody had told them anything and hunter johnson later said we were all cold we were all scared we were there for a long time our brains continued to spiral we watched the ambulance come and we watched them immediately leave the police were like we didn't know the university would send out texts the university had just kind of done that without really thinking i guess um they were all separated and questioned by police individually and they were all like oh my god they're all dead they're all dead they're all dead they're all dead they're all dead they're all dead they're all dead they're all dead meanwhile maddie's boyfriend jake failed to get in touch with maddie so he called her mom and said karen do you know what's going on in moscow right now he told her there was apparently an open homicide investigation at maddie's house and her mom was like what and he said well we don't know who's been killed so karen starts calling her daughter maddie but couldn't get a hold of her and so she tells maddie's stepdad scott and says well maddie and kaylee are fine i'm sure they're fine let's go down and have lunch with her let's pick her up we'll ask what happened and make sure she's okay so karen called the moscow police from the car who confirmed there had been a homicide at maddie's address but could give them no further information i can't even imagine the fucking terror well i think they just like didn't allow that to be a possibility at the time they were like well we'll go get her you know and i know but to just hear like we can't give any we can't tell you anything i'd be like oh my god like this is killing me they imagine that it'd been zanna or one of the girls other friends um they were like we'll just go pick up maddie and kaylee drive them home um but when they arrived an officer took them to a private room and said there was not just one victim there were four victims and maddie and kaylee are both dead oh my fucking god stacy and jim the parents of the triplets um also arrive at the police station and they learn that ethan is dead um it's just crazy because the night before the three triplets had been together like spending that evening together and stacy had actually looked at their phone their locations in the life 360 app and like felt so content in her heart that like she was like i don't know what to do i don't know what to do i don't know what to do all three of her triplets like all three of her kids were together like um that she didn't have to worry about them yeah she was like she just remembered looking and feeling like like they have each other yep and went to bed oof yeah so jim said in uh an interview it drives me crazy because i always wanted to protect my family and there was nothing i could have done instantly he was taken and i couldn't do a thing about it um the families were you know booked into hotels um hunter johnson who was the one who had walked in and like seen whatever he had seen and then ushered everyone out and had basically been like the leader of the day he started to like basically crash out because it's like he'd been the one all day the point person he'd been the one to be like to tell everyone what had happened to tell hunter his brother was dead like to keep everyone out of the house to talk to police so he starts like really feeling the effects of this trauma um and emily later said he had actually saved most of them from a lot more trauma by refusing to let anyone inside because they would have wandered up looking you know if if he hadn't like refused to let them in he really took one for the team in a really bad way yeah absolutely as the day progressed ava described him in complete shock looking like a ghost um he and emily couldn't sleep that night they they didn't know anything still they just heard the words isolated and targeted in the news reports and they were like isolated and targeted like what is this i mean you've got to feel like you woke up in a fucking horror time warp you know yeah horror movie the reports were meant to reassure the rest of the town that there was no further danger like the killer wasn't on the loose you know but then the friends were like well what do you mean like how do you know that and who is it and how like are we safe like we're part of the group like it just didn't make sense and they didn't feel safe you know no and my first thought too would be like one of them knows i saw them totally and then walked away i'm absolutely next is he still out there and then they're saying like don't worry this was targeted and it's like well to me too like i it's just all right all very confusing um they said they didn't sleep for days like were they being stalked is this and they could get no information you know and were they staying in the house like no no no they were staying in hotels yeah or around moscow well these two were staying at their apartment um they didn't live in the house so um got it the emily and uh hunter the other hunter lived lived off property but yeah a lot of them talked about like just not sleeping in the days after every sound made them jump they were like terrified that they'd be next they didn't again they didn't even know what had happened they just heard like targeted homicide and never saw their friends again would be a really bad time for the pan to fall in the kitchen totally exactly exactly they said every sound made them jump for days um there was just more silence from police everyone was terrified parents were calling the school demanding answers um like but how the dean of students was like this is not something i was prepared for in lieu of police statements the mayor spoke to the media but he also didn't have any information so it was like they're just like sending out comforting words but it's just like making everything more convoluted and confusing um it had actually been more than six years since the last homicide in moscow and he described the city's plan about major crime as woefully deficient like this was not something this town was equipped for whatsoever three days after the murders on november 16th police held an extremely brief press conference where all they did was confirm that zanna ethan maddie and kaylee were all dead and that they had all been stabbed to death oh my god oh my god and also that sounds like a man i hope i'm getting everyone's names right but it sounds like original hunter who went up and saw i'm saying original hunter because there's two of them um it sounds like if they were stabbed to death for him to just come downstairs and say she's unconscious he was saving them even further grief that's what i wonder because we don't know the extent of what he saw okay but he saw either someone on the ground and like i i don't know how much i don't know what he saw but yes like what you're saying it's what i wondered as well like how how much was this thing that he saw that yeah he would but but maybe but then he said oh all i could all i saw was that someone was unconscious so it's like maybe he just saw and didn't and he knew himself not to go any further you know i i don't know but i was wondering that exact same thing um so a reporter asked about witnesses living in the house and why they didn't call 9-1-1 until hours after the murders occurred the police chief responded i don't think that i ever said they were witnesses i said they were there so despite his defense on behalf of dylan and bethany tens of thousands people would soon be asking these same questions the police basically just zipped their lips after this they were like we don't have any more information we don't want to compromise any of our leads but everyone the world was watching this unfold and people were becoming obsessed um this is what i'm saying i remember tiktok was going crazy about this i mean it was nuts um reporters from major media outlets began hounding the victims families and friends karen remembered someone approaching her while she was trying to get the mail and she was like i i they didn't even know her daughter's name they said like your daughter was one of the people killed right like can we talk about it and she's like can we talk about it can we talk about it get out of my yard can we talk about this situation she said get out of here like you nosy motherfucker get out of here it was fucking spine yeah boy so she just became afraid to leave the house obviously hunter chapin um the brother of ethan began receiving as many 20 calls a day from like mainstream media outlets asking for interviews um he and all his friends were getting dms constantly on all their social media and then of course content creators took over and youtubers podcasters tiktokers became like you know armchair experts and started dissecting every shred of information and this is when i was like oh my god what's wrong with you this is gonna get bad and messy people are making leaps and bounds that like i know if i watch this i'll be like oh interesting like i'm not even putting my brain into that pattern i've always i'll tell you in case i remember yeah in case people need to um hear it again about you i've always appreciated that and that's why we drink you have intentionally waited until all the facts were out there before you've reported on something because you're like i do not need to find out something and then have to like like take it back later yeah and i only watch like sources where i'm like i'm because i'm like how you can go so easily down i know that like i do that you can go so easily down a rabbit hole and like when it's people's families and lives i mean it got really bad um they basically started like taking every piece of like information and and trying to turn it into something you know um and then they started visiting moscow and like basically just harassing random people in town and asking questions and recording people in their homes and walking into classrooms on campus um just constant harassment when all you want to do is not think about this for five seconds yeah when you just want to try to get through the day one documentary covering the case even shows a tiktoker who like used like a real estate listing to go through the house and like give a tour of the house with like creepy music underneath oh and she i know it's really get a fucking read the room yeah she says we're gonna go into zanna's bedroom and it's like this viral trending like creepy music underneath and she like walks into the like come on it feels extra like this is this is not my first thought but is like my third or fourth thought is like this is also additionally violating for the people who are who survived this yeah it's like well now everyone knows my fucking house looks like and i'm already scared of anyone coming over at any point and yeah i mean they're not living there anymore it's definitely yeah just a crime scene at this point but still just so violating of like the memory of that place with your friends and oh yeah they're they're fully like getting completely doxxed from the inside out like people are stalking them people are dming them and harassing them and bullying them and threatening them um hunter johnson who was the only one to enter the crime scene and like basically held down the fort um he became a target uh because a police body cam video surfaced from a prior noise complaint where it showed that he had zip ties on his wrist so he was like oh my god i'm gonna die i'm gonna die he had been playing like some game like champagne and shackles some like frat game you know where you like zip tie like edward forty hands or something yes like yeah exactly where you zip tie like um you're tied to each other until you finish your drinks whatever um but like nobody wanted to hear that even though like i hear that i'm like yes that's exactly what they were doing because yeah i know what i've been to college i know what dom college kids do but like i guess people were like oh my god he has zip ties he must be the killer and it's like What are you talking about? This was like a noise complaint from like another time. like it's just weird i'm like i it's too much um they believe the zip ties were like clues and they said like he killed his best friends and and then of course like emily's his girlfriends were like emily was in on it too dylan dylan and bethany were scrutinized again and again because they hadn't called 9-1-1 um but it was like 4 30 a.m and they were confused and they knew each other was awake so they were like and also like as like someone in my mid-30s of course i would call the police immediately but when i was 21 i would think like someone might have had a friend over and like they were all drinking and like and it's dark and people are always in and out of the house exactly they don't lock the doors it could just be somebody and especially when the guy just looks at you and keeps walking and also like this is like a silly little thing but if when i was 21 i was scared to call the police i've called the police so many times since i know right now once you move to la you're like never mind it's just a part of my job i just like oh i just see something say something but when i was 21 i would have been like if i'm calling 9-1-1 like it has to be an incredibly serious emergency and i don't want to bother anybody and totally and i lived in dc but like you and these kids live in lived in like a college town where it's like there's not like crime on you know like there's not like homicides on the corners you know also when i was 21 i still had that like uh like impervious mindset of like nothing could hurt me nothing would ever happen in my circle that's part of college so like i wouldn't believe something i would be in total denial that anything could happen to me for me to even want to call i just i would justify it so quickly of like it's four in the morning someone's finally going home after hanging out like it was just some dude and whatever they got him rid of him and like now i'm with my friend and we're just gonna sleep in the same room tonight and figure it out in the morning yeah so that yeah they they started getting i mean just online hatred for the girls especially grew so strong people were posting things like it's dylan dylan's fault her friends died i hope she feels the guilt forever and it haunts her laughing emojis girl if you ever hear that is a fucking lie don't yeah i'll feel that way oh my god and quote you can't convince me that the remaining roommates are innocent idc i don't care um and he's got like thousands like people were just like so evil it's just rough at 4 17 a.m a security camera near the house picked up the sound of a dog barking voices possibly whimpering and a loud thud people didn't think it was possible that like the camera could pick up the sounds but dylan didn't know what was happening and it's like you don't know what's happening it's a dog barking and she also heard the dog barking and she also heard voices whatever we speaking of dogs oh my god so did hank hey hey enough we're teaching him the word enough doesn't work yet hank enough yes good job yes oh wow he had to do one more good job chicken oh your treats are somewhere else where's go get mommy where's mommy we taught him where's mommy oh the famous heart glasses got a little trippy this week i got to wear them around to the new some new locations and pointed out like if she had called 9-1-1 right away she may have been killed you know because she was opening the door closing the door and so but they were like it just wasn't she couldn't win you know um in an interview with a detective dylan had been drinking so she was woken up like from a really deep sleep at 4 30 a.m she was really out of it everything was blurry and she was like i'm gonna go to bed i'm gonna go to bed i'm gonna go confusing um i don't think she needs to explain it any further but apparently people just couldn't take her explanation um courtney franklin who teaches courses at washington state university which include violence against women and gender and crime later said in a documentary that in a threatening or dangerous situation like this behavior that seems wrong or strange is actually quote exactly how we should expect someone to behave because you're not going to be necessarily thinking logically and rationally folks are not going to understand that this behavior is a behavior of someone who is not going to understand that this behavior is a behavior of someone who has just experienced trauma like you like don't know what you're going to do 100 and people just can't wrap their minds around that um people just continued attacking dylan and bethany online news outlets were posting articles suggesting the girls could be criminally charged for failing to call 9-1-1 and it's like where are you getting this information you're just making it up and honestly i i would still feel this way i want to say when i was 21 but i'd still feel this way if if someone ever threatened any criminal charges on me i'd fucking lose my life especially like on top of just being a scared 21 year old who is fully traumatized who just lost a bunch of my fucking best friends and now you're gonna throw at me that i'm going to jail i would witness the killer and probably escaped with my fucking life like on a dime you know i would be on spiral also maybe we were intentionally glossing over this did the dog also die no oh okay yeah nope the dog did not die great um so maddie's boyfriend jack wasn't even in moscow the night of the night of the murders he was in boise but he even was receiving like death threats and stuff and he's like i wasn't even in town like it's just these poor kids um he stayed with maddie's parents for a while where he felt safe but then online sleuths found out that the grub truck where they'd gotten late night food had like they did a twitch they do a twitch live stream where they basically live stream their food truck all night and people could just like tune in and watch like people order food so watching back through archives viewers found maddie and kaylee in the footage and it was hours before they were killed and you can like see them come up and order food and like it's just so unsettling people became convinced that someone at the food truck had followed them home that night and soon everyone like kind of found this one guy in the background they hummed in on him and said like he's wearing a hoodie and waiting on his food he's looking at them strangely um and they of course pretty quickly figured out who he was fully doxxed him um tiktokers posted videos of him at the food truck and they were like the food truck like slowed down saying who is food truck guy university of idaho frat boy possible stalker this poor fucking guy like he literally fucking decided hey it's like a friday night and i'm gonna go put on my favorite black hoodie and go get me something from the grub truck and now he's like big mistake whoa wow uh the caption even said always purposely bumping into kaylee out in public alarming siren emoji um another friend ashlyn uh saw people calling the home a party house with an open door policy and she was like that's not at all true this was a safe place with a good group of friends that went in and out but it wasn't a party house and it wasn't somewhere where randos were walking through this was like really respectful and like a nice house kids yeah like a nice house with a dog and a group of good friends um in a police interview dylan told an officer she didn't even know how the attacker had gotten in she said i usually lock the doors we've never had problems like this before rumors started that ethan was involved in drug dealing like literally any possible avenue you could think of that like people would come up with some sort of theory um that he had given his roommates like laced drugs and they'd all overdosed was one of the theories others said like a drug dealer had killed it killed everyone like as revenge um spoiler alert none of this is true okay uh the rumors about ethan became so severe that his family was involved in drugs and they were like no like don't let any of this get to you like none of this is real um ethan was not involved in any sort of drug scene um this just all seemed random and horrifying um it's also so heartbreaking for the parents because now they're like all of a sudden questioning their own kids their own reality of like what was even going on um a friend of the group named david also became like an obsession for some investigators because he was a volunteer sober driver for the sigma chi party and he was a volunteer for the sigma chi party and he was asking people if they needed rides that night so people were like oh my god he's like trying to get people in his car and it's like he's the dd shut the fuck up everybody oh my god someone messaged him even if the cops don't get you someone will i promise you enjoy everything while you still can and i hope you fry and he's like i was literally just the driver that night and like like literally like you're doing a good deed you're like yeah i'm intentionally trying to make sure everyone gets person and now i'm being told that i'm a violent dangerous person that i'm gonna fry for the rest of my life yeah oh my god wow so now they're scared not only of like the killer but like that some vigilante's gonna show up and like punish them for something they didn't do you know i i mean i i can understand like a whole a whole college full of like young kids who one are just young kids and like nosy and want to like speculate but on top of it they also lost their friends so there's some like vested interest in them this, like I can understand why everyone's a target for a second, but like the way. that this is like so blowing out of proportion it's crazy to like turn this into yeah it's just yeah became like a circus a total circus um like maisie and ethan or maisie and hunter lost their brother and now they're like being blamed for it too it's just all they like they can't even grieve no um and on top of that they're expected to be like gracious and kind and put together on interviews or like on you know like in any sort of like public appearance otherwise they're going to look even more suspicious or whatever um just really rough um ben dewitt who wrote for the student newspaper and had known zanna since elementary school um said a lot of people even professional reporters lose their humanity around high-profile murder cases because they just think of it as a story um reporters were following students around campus um it it was just like terrible behavior um people who were connected in any way to these kids this case had to delete social media and they were like oh my god this is so bad um and then they were like oh my god this is so bad um and then they were like oh my god this is so bad um and then they were like social media quit their jobs like it got really bad the universe held a vigil for the four friends hunter chapin was required to go with an fbi escort and of course then people started swirling like oh you know and then there's people started this rumor that there was going to be a mass shooting at the vigil and it's like what are you doing um yeah so on november 20th moscow police held a second brief press conference at uh during which they explicitly ruled out bethany dylan and at the food truck as suspects said do not harass these people they have nothing to do with it um when asked again why they believe the attack was isolated and that no one else was in danger from this murder the police said they couldn't release any more information and said quote to be honest you're going to have to just trust us on that at this point um a public autopsy had confirmed that all four victims had been murdered with the same weapon which appeared to be a large fixed blade knife but what the public did not know was that the killer had accidentally left behind the knife sheath next to maddie in her bed this was a critical mistake especially after investigators collected dna from a button on the sheath and were able to trace the sheath's owner to its source and that is the end of part one oh it's just horrible that was really well done though for something that is overwhelmingly full of information well thank you um sergio was a great help to me on that um and i watched so there's this documentary on netflix that's very well known but it has like the body cam footage of them finding everything and it's it's like very alarming to watch like the kids outside and the police being like what's like just being going from like oh i'm sure like there was just a party here to like something really terrible has happened um you even watch them like figuring out where where the dog's gonna go and all this like it it's unsettling but yeah so that's the story do we know if the dog barked to be like to protect the owner or like just trying to get help because he was locked in a room or oh the dog barked when the intruder was in the house somewhere we just don't know what really happened yeah the dog was untouched yeah the dog was untouched yeah the dog was untouched mm-hmm okay well still it's so terrible and that whatever the dog saw jesus christ i can't imagine i know well good telling it i'm excited to hear the part two because uh i'm ready to find out who actually did this oh god yeah don't check the internet because it's very um i will not very timely well i'm melting to death you are melting to death got it okay well i i wish you easy breezes uh thank you i'm gonna try not to look out the window though because the man on the roof is still there and he's still tipping a little bit on his ladder and it's giving me some really deep-seated anxiety if i saw someone working on a microphone though and i was standing i would hope they were talking about me you know what i mean i feel like i would be like they're about to win like broadcast my death i'd be like i'm arguably the safest i'll ever be because someone would report it immediately witnessing this yeah all right well i'll see you next week then and that's why we drink fall never arrives all at once first the air then the light and slowly the things you love begin to
