E494 The Butt Curtain Speakeasy and the Batman Hatman

This episode of "And That's Why We Drink" blends lighthearted personal anecdotes with a paranormal story and the start of a true crime case. The hosts open with casual conversation about their drinks, allergies, and daily frustrations. Christine recounts a serendipitous encounter at a Walmart where she helped a homesick German woman, Inga, find Windex, bonding over language and shared overwhelm. The conversation also touches on family dynamics, with one host discussing setting boundaries with her mother's long phone calls. The paranormal segment focuses on the Fess Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin, now the Great Dane Pub. Built in the 1850s by George Fess as a hotel for the common man, it was a temperance establishment for 130 years, serving no alcohol. The hosts detail its history, including its stables, the $1.40 room rate, and its preservation as a historic site. Ghostly activity includes a man asking for the time, items swinging from ceilings, a "spooky room" so oppressive staff quit, and phone calls from non-existent rooms. The hosts also reflect on their scariest experiences, recalling a terrifying basement at Bobby Mackey's. The episode concludes by introducing the University of Idaho murders of 2022, setting up a two-part deep dive into the case involving four students killed in their off-campus home.

I planned on doing this with hank by my side as my little co-host today, but he decided that eating a carrot was more important. We would like to thank EmbarkVet.com for supporting and that's why we drink. If you go to EmbarkVet.com, you can save $10 on the breed and health test and get free shipping with promo code drink. We cover cryptids and I have my own little carrot eating cryptid in the corner right now. And one of my biggest unsolved mysteries was what breed is he? To solve this, I went to Embark's dog DNA test. They have the most accurate dog DNA test available and all I had to do was take a little cheek swab from him. I had to mail it to them in a pre-packaged envelope that they provided for me. And two weeks later, we got the results and everyone thought when we got hank they were like, oh, clearly he's a cattle dog. Big surprise indeed, he is actually a burnwiler, which is half Bernie's mountain dog and half rotwiler. And also Pomeranian, which was an even bigger surprise and a pinch, like 3% German shepherd. If you want to see for yourself what your dog's breed is and not just what their breed is at a curiosity, but how you can actually help them based on their breed, what's going to help them health wise, what their diet should look like, what their exercise should look like, what their lifespan will look like. Then check out Embark, it's been so helpful to us. Get the dog DNA test that is trusted by millions and this August, if you'd like, you can add a donation for shelters and rescues right at checkout go to EmbarkVet.com to get free shipping and save $10 with promo code drink, visit EmbarkVet.com and use promo code drink to save $10 today. Olen Schennen-Maldonado, the founder of the Artesan Institute of Technology, has been a member of the Institute of Technology. He was a shopkeeper because he was a professor at the University of Technology in the first year of the University. He was the first to be a professor at the University of Technology. [Music] Hello and welcome to, and that's why we drink. M has been doing a swirly motion over there and I just, I'm just dying to know what he is sipping. I'm sipping, I, well actually, ugh, I left him in the fridge. I was going to do a toofr. I'm drinking a london fog, fantastic, and I'm kind of bringing back the liquid deaths right now, I will LDs, and so on. Okay, that's interesting. How did this happen? I haven't, I feel like I've been off the, off the rate, there have been off my radar. You weren't on how it happened. I went to see Wine and Crime live last night. I was about to say I saw this so weird. I saw like, I think it was Steve Ray Morris posted with like, she was holding one in her, and I was like, I haven't had a liquid death in a while, and I thought that this morning, literally see, that's wow. I think it was because we haven't been in a green room in a while, and I think that's probably why, and also like a venue, like a theater venue where they serve them. And so, they let us go hang out in the green room before the show, and they were, I heard Amanda or someone say like, "Oh, do you want a water?" and like, open up like the green room fridge, and it was just like cans and cans and cans. And I was like, "I think I'm going to get back into this now." Oh, this old thing? Yeah. I think it was jaded because we talk about it so much, and they've never offered us a single world hell. I know, you felt a really personal kind of like, a person who attacks you by like, we could help each other so much. Especially on a, that's why I drink, we're neither was drunk, and I'm saying like, Right, but like, they don't need the help is what we've learned over the years. And like, I think when you called them a small business, and then it was like, you're like a multi-million dollar corporation. I think that's when we really lost the plot a little bit. I, you know, because they were new to me, I assumed what I was like, I know about all types of water. This is new to me, and therefore, I mean, yeah, it was smaller back then, you know, than it is now. So it was like a one-million dollar business instead of like that? Yeah, yeah, exactly. Like, small, potatoes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, that's exciting. So you don't have that, but you got your London fog. So I got my London fog, but other one, it's, she's chilling in the fridge. That'll be my post-record drink now. Your green room fridge. My, my very white room fridge. Yeah. Yeah, there you go. So I drink that, and then I also have a backup L, L, F. I, I think that's going to be my dog park drink later. Oh, dog park drink. You got that dog in you. Oh, so, uh, what are you doing like that? Um, well, before the show, M was like, I got to lick the lid real quick. I acted judgmental, but now I'm like, wait, I also, I guess so. And it's now on air, but no, I'm not going to do that. If you do it, I still have a little left on mine. We can just lick together. Okay, I'm making sure my address is gay. No, wait, actually, this is, this is so gay. Are you ready? Yeah, tell me. There's a flap. Now, you know good and well. I'm so sorry. The word flap might as well be the word moist, especially when you put them together. Moist flaps. Oh my god. Sorry. Are we looking together or what? Well, now look at what I've had. What I have to work with it. I don't feel really like drawn to be participating. The flap, Christine. Don't be shy. Don't be shy. All right. You sick fuck's better not do anything with that. The fan art's going to go nutty. Um, anyway, how is, what else isn't there besides peanut butter? Are you just licking a jar of peanut butter? The peanut butter flap. Oh, right. A PB flap. No, it's my smoothie that looks so pretty. Look. That is beautiful. And then I did that stupid allergy test. And I'm so mad because what'd you find out? I'd already submitted it. And then everyone was like, guys, or Christine, that doesn't work. And I was like, I know, but I shouldn't have set it. Because I already know I'm going to get that feedback. And then I got the thing. And it was basically the four ingredients that I had that are in this smoothie. And I was like, well, I just ate that. I don't think I'm allergic to smoothie. I mean, I stopped drinking it. And then tried again. I was like, it doesn't have any effect. So I think it just kind of like tracked what I had just been eating for the past few days. So it was like, you're allergic to raspberries. And I'm like, what? And like, um, one other really random thing where I was like, that's not a food I eat, like ever. I don't know. It was just strange. And so I felt a little bit like disheartened by that. Um, so I'm back to my smoothie game because fuck that. You know, I found out speaking of allergy tests. Nothing about myself, but, um, I think I'm the last person on earth who still watches jackass. And hey, can I confirm something? You are absolutely the last person. Besides the people on the treadmill who forgot their AirPods and the gym only plays MTV. I, well, I, for a while, I don't know what was going on. I was doing something mindless, a puzzle or something. And I was like, I just need something that I'm not really going to pay attention to, but I need the background sound. And jackass just the sound. I didn't like go searching for it. It was in, it was like as a suggestion for whatever reason. I don't know what my algorithm thinks of me. But it was right because I press play anyone. I don't play it as you're playing pegged apparently. I, um, I like to be fair. I don't like think their humor is funny or anything. But like, I don't mind watching people kind of get hurt. Like, I don't know. There's something about it. It feels kind of like your vibe, yeah. I'm just kind of like, oh, well, like, at least it's at least not me. Um, but I found out you're like an old grandma. Well, I just, these kids, these kids these days, at least, at least not me. My Johnny would never know. I mean, I like the, the gross ones I can't, I can't do. But like, just watching them hurt themselves. I don't know what's so like, just like, I'll just suck myself into that. It's a good teenage boy. I found out that like, they'll do obviously such insane, dangerous, dangerous things. And, but they also take an allergy test to make sure that like, if they do any stunts with like bees that they like don't get stung if they, I was like, this, that's the one fucking caveat. Is it really like actually medical? Legal is going to be real pissed if we let you, um, launch off a skateboard and break your femur in half. But then an ant crawls over you. Literally, like, there's one guy who apparently is like, severely allergic to bees. But then they're like, anyway, why don't you just go like, jump off a fucking cliff set of helmets? Sorry, the bees are out. How do you feel about really tall heights? To like fair toss up. Anyway, um, wow, you said allergy. And I, I, I just learned that last night. I was like, learn your watching jackass. That's funny. It is shocking. So yeah, maybe that's, I mean, I don't know where to go from here. Uh, why do you, oh, is that why you drink? No, that's just about your smoothie. What do you, why do you drink? Oh, well, there, there's so many reasons. I woke up to the sound and I had a text on my phone for my mom. I said there, if there's a man in your chimney, and I was like, yeah, there was a man in the might. That's what my brother said. He said, was it the end of December? And I said, what? Like, I literally was like, what do you mean? Was it the end of December? And he's like the end of December. And I was like, what? He's like, when Christmas is. And I was like, oh, no, it wasn't. It was last night. And I heard this pounding sound. It was not last night. It was like 8 a.m. too far too early for me. Might have been middle of the night. And I just hear this like pounding, banging, clanging. Yeah, there's a man in my chimney. And it's not Santa. And he's just there to fuck up my morning, I guess. But we had one. It cut out. Who was it? Not, all I heard was it's not Santa. I think it cut out. I forgot to say it's just a guy working on the house, I guess. My mom just hired him and was like, he's in a chimney. She had to know what she was saying with that. That's way too silly. Well, she just left for Germany and they're still here. And he's still in the walls or something. And I keep hearing sounds. But the electric electricity is back on. It was off for a minute. And I was actually a little worried. But it's back and they're on the roof. And we're really high up. So if I see anything fall, I'm going to have a panic attack. You'll finally have my moment. How do you have when the door dash people show up? Like, oh my god. Yeah. Yeah. - You know, yours is in my window. - Much more valid. - Yeah, well, yeah, it's just, it's just, - What is it he's working on? - A little bit of a jump scare, but yeah, I also drink because I thought my name was on this and I was like, oh, they spelled my name wrong. Oh my God, oh my God, they called me beauty. And then I went, oh no, that's the name of this movie. - Oh my God. - There's beauty and sharpie on the top. - That hurts extra when it's like, oh, they weren't calling me beautiful. - And then-- - No, I really, I felt like a little bit like charmed for a moment, you know? - Yeah, I'd be like, oh my God, you too. (laughing) - You too. (laughing) - Should I write them back? - I-- - Does it matter? Do you think they care if I lick the lid? - I met. - Do you think you can see the word beauty when I lick the lid, 'cause that's gonna cost more money? It's gonna cost extra for you, freaks. - You know what? Test it, see what they do. - Okay. - I will say, the straw does, every time you do that, it looks like you're just slurping on celery. - Really? - From the distance? - Oh yeah. - It just, I also, Hank always has a sick of celery in his mouth, so I think I'm just used to it. But give me that, spit it out. It's literally his, like, he won't do anything anymore without celery or a carrot. - That's like very cute. - It's extremely cute. - It's cute until we don't have any celery or carrots, and then I'm like, get older for bed. - Anyway, when you drink, do we know? - Do we know, do we know? - No, I drink because what's going on? Let me just tell you about my day today. I have, I have like three stupid phone calls I have to do. One is, with my mom, I owe her a phone call, and I know it'll just take an eternity. Which, love you mom, but it's gonna, that'd be a quick one. We've recently had a conversation where we shook hands on trying to agree to make the phone calls shorter, because here's my thing, and I'm absolutely just gonna like, yeah, let's go. Let's get into it. My mother texts me that there's a man in my chimney at 8 a.m. So like, I'm ready to fucking see what's up on the other side of this. - Perfect point. - Well, I, I, and I say this all with love, mom, but you can't stop me either. (laughing) Everywhere. - Why did I wear a white sweatshirt? Why do I wear a white sweatshirt? - What do you own one? Yeah, that's a better question. I have no clue. - What the fuck did you just say, what did I say? I said, yeah, it made me spit my fucking drink out. - I don't even remember what it was now. You said? - Oh, I said, but she can't stop me from what I'm about to say. - Yeah. - How, what the fuck? I can't just spit my drink out everywhere. - Well, I have the stereotypical just Jewish New York mother who like just, it's the call, like a phone call where I will answer a phone, and I will tell, I won't even say hello yet. I'll say, you have five minutes. I'll give her a timer immediately. - You're just past the pleasantries now at this point. - Really, if I don't, sometimes the phone call goes on for like two and a half hours. And I'm like, it's the middle of the day. And then of course, because she thinks like this. - Are you talking or is she just talking? Like, what's the vibe? - It's about a 50/50 split. I'll tell you that. - Okay. - That's what I'm talking about. - I wonder, is that useful for you? Or are you like, I wish I could talk more? Are you like, at least I'm not talking, you know? - Um, interesting. 'Cause I feel like, I'm ready for the conversation be done after half an hour. And so after that half an hour mark, I'm not speaking one because she's telling me what's going on in her life, but also because like, I have, my battery has burnt out. So it's, it's really not a fair argument from my mom is gonna say like, we talk for two and a half hours and you know, talk, and like, I wish you would talk. And so I'm gonna say, you're right mom. I don't understand. - I understand. - That's on me. - I understand. - One of the things that we shook hands on is I was like, if you call me less, or if you call me more, but with less time, I will be a lot more engaging in those periods. But like, if you're calling me once a week and expecting a three hour conversation or two hour conversation with me, I don't have enough to update you on. And then like, for the next hour, I look like an ass 'cause I'm like, not engaging. - Do you want to text at all? - Mm-hmm. - Is she a texture or not really? - Oh, the texting. Oh, we have a shake hands on that too. (laughing) - Wow, I'm clearly just opening a can of worms here. Anyway, and I'm very lucky to have a mom who wants to talk with me and all that, but I don't have enough material for two hours a week. Most of my life, I'm sitting here, I've got a dog, I've got Allison, we're not leaving the house. And she's retired and she's going here and there. She literally told me last time I talked to her that for the next full calendar year, she's only gonna be home for like eight days. I was like, oh my Christ. How does she find time to call you? - Literally, okay, so now you're just giving her ammo 'cause she's gonna be like, I'm doing all this stuff and I can find things to talk about, but. - Wow. - Anyway, so I'm excited to try out this new method because I do wanna talk to her more often. I just, I just have more frequency fewer words. Fewer. - Yeah. - Long shorter periods. - Well then I also do like the annoying kid thing where I'm in my thirties, but I'm a teenager where I see my mom call and I'm like, oh, that's gonna take two hours. I can't right now. And then I just forget to call her back. And so then I never call her. So I was like, if I know that when I answer the phone, I will be doing something else in a half an hour. I will answer the phone, but like I just never know and I don't wanna get sucked into something. And she was very receptive and we shook hands and I am excited for this new chapter in our conversation. - I think congratulations. That is a big step. - Thank you. - It's a big old step. - And it's also on me, I need to answer the phone more, but I need to trust that it's the back. It's gonna be a dance. - Yeah. - I do love you mom, I'm sorry if I embarrassed you. But I am excited to talk to you more. Just, I think a lot of people love to talk to Linda if you need a moment away from the phone, you know? - That's true. I could just go in and scrum live and just put her on speaker phone and do like take it away. - I was gonna say, oh my God, I didn't even think of that. That's a great idea. - That actually is a great idea. It's like if you wanna, my mom needs someone to talk to you, you guys wanna talk to my mom. Let's just make that up. - Or like just for this podcast. Like you can just be quiet and just hold the phone up and then like we'll just have two hours. - It's beautiful actually. - That's actually not a good idea. I'm sure she would love a podcast. - She's gonna be drained 'cause it feels like I'm gonna be have to step in, you know, as the co-host is like, I don't know. - That's fine. - In another life she should have been a podcaster. - Yeah, maybe this is, maybe this is her future. - Mom. - Uh-oh. - You listening? - What did I just say? - If you had to defer and I started a podcast we're instead of having phone calls. - Oh yeah. - Kind of what I'm pitching right this very minute. I'm kind of into it. - She just updates me in front of everybody. So then everyone holds both of us accountable. Now I don't hate that. I don't hate that either as like, as the occasional reality television viewer. I feel like that could be really messy. - I mean, I will say the things that she's talking to me about are interesting. I just like, I've got nothing. Like I've just nothing in the chamber. So actually then maybe we could all just enjoy. Anyway, let me know if you wanna lend a gossip session. - I do. - Anyway, I feel like I was a bad child by airing all that. However, I'm not gonna take it that way. - At the end, that's why I drink, I guess. - Oh, fantastic. Well, I hope your El Foggy is good. I'm eating my raw energy balls. And that's, I'm, I say it only because literally on here it says raw energy balls. What do you want from me? - That's, I'm glad you showed me what. - Yeah, it's like upsetting, right? It's not okay. - I don't know why anyone's like pitching something as balls. Like we couldn't just call those like rounds or circles or pops. - What was the first, what was the first? - Round, rounds, rounds, I heard it too. - I've got my energy round. - Okay, to be fair, this is not a good defense. But as I'm going through, I'm peeling through all my family old recipes. I guess rounds was a thing where it was like circle pastries or circles. - It was? - Okay, clearly, I don't know about this. Clearly nobody else did either. And that's why we have phased the phrase out. So. - Can I, can I tell you something that weird that happened yesterday? - Oh God, please. - My brother picked me up and took me like to the liminal parts of Kentucky where things are just kind of like backroads and everything's in an antique shop except it's also like a farm stand and it's also someone's house and you're like, where am I? And we were just bopping around. And we, he was like, oh, I have to pick up. I have to run an errand. And so we stopped at a Walmart. And I was like, I'm going to go buy some snacks while you pick up the photos from like the photo counter or whatever and it's like a super Walmart. So I'm like lost. I'm already like overwhelmed and I'm wandering around and I'm like, I know I'm really in a liminal space because we found like middle or light flavored pringles and I'm like, I hate this place. Like get me out of here. - I don't know what I was talking about. - I've ever heard. - It was and I just felt like, oh God. And then all of a sudden this person approaches me. I'm like, oh God, someone's going to talk to me and she goes, excuse me. I can't find Siklina for the windows. And I was like, and she looked like she's about to cry. And I was like, I'm sorry, what? And she was like, I'm trying to clean the windows. I need something to clean the windows and we were in like a cleaning aisle. But it was like every color, every fucking like oxy clean version, you know, you're just like over. And she looked like she was about to cry and she was probably like this, I don't know, in her 50s, this woman, this blonde woman. And I'm like, okay, okay, let me help you. And I'm like, I start walking with her and I'm like, looking around. I'm like, I don't see it either. And I'm like, where are you from? And she's like, Germany. And I'm like, oh hell, yeah, jackpot. Boy, and I literally spit around. I go, he can't dodge my, he was like, what? And I said, like, yeah, my, and I just fucking like went. And I was like, I don't know where this came from. But I was like, that's so good. And I was like, oh, my, I was like, like my brother's here, he's being sure. And like I was like, holy shit, this is crazy. And then I was like, hold on, follow me. And she was like, she started speaking German. She's like, you can understand me. And I was like, yes. And she's like, I've lived here a year. She's like, I've lived here a year. And she's like, I'm so, she said in German, I'm so overstimulate. (laughs) It's like, girl, I've lived here my whole life. And I'm so overstimulated inside a super Walmart. Don't worry about it. - Is this a weird question? 'Cause I don't wanna be like, oh, because you speak German and she speaks German. Like I'm not trying to like, yeah, yeah, no. But, did you like just find your mom a friend? Like, could she like have a buddy? - I would never do that, Tinka. I told Inga, like, please, stay away from me. You can come near me, but like the rest of us, please. Where it's dangerous out there. Sometimes a man will just be in the chimney. It's like, you never know what to do. No, but so then like near the end, I was like, I was like, this is so crazy. Like, I don't, like, I've been really like at home a lot in a very hermit phase. I don't like go to Walmart. I don't know, the whole thing was just so strange and like surreal. And then I found my brother and he's like, where are the snacks? And I was like, well, I had to find, help Inga find the Windex. And he was like, what the fuck? Like, it was just a weird day. But so then we found the Windex. And I was like, like, I've been Christine. I like, what's your name? And she was like, I'm Inga. And I was like, oh my God, I can't believe I just met someone named Inga and it was so weird. And I just, anyway, high Inga wherever you are, if you ever hear this. - But save German, so she knows what's going on, I think. - No, she speaks English. - She does, okay, okay, okay. - Yeah, but she was just like, I just spun around when, like, I speak German and she was like, what? Like, she was so shocked and she's like, you're the first person who's pronounced my name correctly since I moved to Cincinnati to town or whatever. And I was like, oh. Well, did you like, at least pat yourself on the back for being like, you were clearly like-- - I felt like a little angel. I felt like a little German angel. And I was like, I'm so happy she felt like, like, like, she could come up to me, you know? I don't know, I just felt very, I was like, I must have a nice inviting aura 'cause she really looks like she's about to cry. But no, that's so nice that like, you were like placed right there just like, she clearly needed help. - It was very odd. And then yeah, my brother's like, where are the snacks? And I was like, they have Miller light Pringles, you know? So we could get that. - I can't think of anything more American than like, if you like beer and chips. - You know, they're trying some beer flavor chips. - My brother goes, oh, sick. Do you think they're vegan? And I'm like, no, I don't think they're vegan. - I don't think that. - They're at promise you, they're not, and they aren't. So. - Yeah, that's the sickest part is the only person who would eat them is my brother and he's vegan now. And so he's like, he like, we found cinnamon, root beer flavored cinnamon toast crunch at Walmart. And he was like, that sounds delicious. And I'm like, you're fucking sick. But like, he's vegan so we can't eat it. But he's like, I'm like, you're, this is the reason you're vegan. Like the world needs to protect you from this. - I think once you're vegan, maybe I don't know if this is true, but I'm imagining if I went vegan, all of a sudden anything ridiculous that I couldn't taste, I would just like be enamored with him. - No, it's not even that. - He's just sick like that. Like he's like, I don't miss anything, but I would eat him. - Right, root beer cinnamon toast crunch. I'm like, you fuck her. - I can't even imagine that flavor palette. - Blah. - I can't even imagine it. Well, that's very sweet. I'm glad that that happened for you. And now- - Yeah, like a little guardian angel. I was like, this is such a fun little synchronicity, you know? - That's so fun. I mean, meanwhile, I'm just like, I sound like a petulence child being like. - My god, he literally went to Walmart. Walmart. - I didn't even manage to pick up a box of, pretzels, so, you know? - Do you have her wins? - A go-to when you go to Walmart, you're like, I'm gonna buy this for sure. - No, I like rarely go to Walmart. We didn't really have one nearest growing up. Like, so I just, I'm not really in a Walmart. Well, apparently, and I'm so out of the zone, I don't even know what they sell anymore. Miller light pringles. I mean, the fuck am I supposed to counter that with? - Nobody knew. You're safe. - Thank you. - I grew up in college. I was right next to a 24 hour walk. - Oh, yeah, that would have done it. If I had one near me, but I lived in DC, so like, there was no Walmart nearby, but that would have done it for sure. - Well, Christine, it's time for me to tell you a story. Oh, wait, no, it's not. I have to take my meds, and this is a reminder to everybody that you should take my meds. - Oh, fuck. - Well, was that, oh fuck, I haven't taken my meds or oh fuck, then we get going. - No, oh fuck, I haven't taken my meds. Oops. I just, I saw them sitting here, and I was like, really doing it, and I went, oh yeah, that was to remind myself. - Oh yeah, I'm supposed to take that. - Okay, everyone, if you're not taking your meds, you still have to drink some water, and on the count of three, we're all gonna do that. Ready? - I'm gonna eat my raw energy ball. - One, two, three. - Yay, we're all healthy. Okay, proud of you. So, this story-- - I'm just gonna take my meds later, remind me at the intermission. - To take your meds? - Mm-hmm. - Okay, we'll do a B team at the end of this. - It's a happy hour encore for all the people. - It's like for all the kids who used to run the mile but walk it, like me. - Me, for sure. - And you. (laughs) - There was a chance. I did not wake up thinking I'm gonna run this and see what happens. - What do these people think I'm gonna actually do that? - You know what I'm gonna actually try that? - Now that my mom is married to a former gym teacher. - Oh, that's right. - I get to ask him all the questions that we've always wanted to know the answers to. - What does he have to say for himself? - I'm like, you can't possibly think that was gonna work. Could you just make me run him out? Like, what's wrong with you? - Do they really know the secret about the period lying about your period every week? - I'm sure he does. - He has a daughter, yeah, for sure. - Oh, okay. But I've said this before, but my favorite thing about when he met my friends and family, I didn't know this all the time, but before they became, before my friends became my friends when they were little, little kids, they actually went to the school where he was the gym teacher. And so when they met him for the first time, thinking it was just like my mom has a new boyfriend, he came over to drink with everybody and we were all post-college and he walks in and all my friends at the same time went, "Mr. Sherman is dating your mom?" - My God, that must have been such a weird, Mr. Sherman. - And they were like, he's a thing called me time and they were like, that's okay, Mr. Sherman. - No, we will not be doing that. - And they finally got their revenge on their gym teacher 'cause they were like, you wanna impress us, Mr. Sherman, you run a fucking mile, go. - Seriously, I'll time it. - Oh, you got cramps today? - Yeah. - Likely story. - But anyway, no, I don't know. That man also, he's in his 60s and he looks, I mean, he's still an active physical contact hockey player every week. - Right. - He was meant to be a gym teacher. It's kind of free. - Let's move on. We've been doing this for a half an hour, Jesus. Okay. - Yeah, just, we're nailing it. - Sorry, I just, I haven't talked to you in so long. We're just feeling guilty. - I already spit my drink out. It's been like quite a doozy of an episode so far. - It's a lot of me complaining about my family. Something's wrong with me. I need to take a nap. - I think you just haven't talked to me in a while. You're like, I have to have so much to complain about about my family. I mean, I get it. Listen, I'm biting my tongue over here. I just, yeah. It's just the chimneys as far as we're going to go. - I've got more, but I'll keep it tucked in for now. - Yeah, we'll keep that for the, for something else. - For the, for the 60-minute special, they do. Okay, by story days and Wisconsin, only one who's going to get any of this fucking information out of me. - Whoa. Barbara Walters over my dead body. - I think, I don't know who I would even want to interview me. If I could do a tell-all, maybe Chris Hanson, but not because I'm a predator. He's only ever interviewed predators, so maybe I should. - You've been Chris Hanson as your fucking interviewer. I was her off with you. - I just love that man, but I'm thinking about it. He has not interviewed anyone who isn't a trail predator. The questions he would ask would be like, he'd be like, what's your name? And also, oh, sorry. I'm not supposed to talk to you like that. I'm trying to, he wouldn't be able to do it. - I'd be like, it's new for all of us, Chris Hanson. That's okay. - I'd be like, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. - Well, folks, it's time for me to tell you again about my financial illiteracy. My first encounters with a bank, as my mom said, you're going to college, here's a debit card. Don't disappoint me. And then I went, okay. And you said, oh, I would never disappoint you, mother. - Tuthy Grins, smiled back each other, both knowing I would fail. And I did. - Has Linda, has Linda discovered time though, because I feel like if you mirror back this time information, she might feel a lot better. - I mean, about your early failures. - This is where time comes in. I like when it's named after a dog. - I love a pub. What would G-O-B as a pub? If it not Great Dane pub, would it be a. - God, little prince. My little mama's little prince pub. That's so sweet. - 'Cause he's just a little prince. - Oh, and that is it. - Mommy's little prince. - Oh, he'd be so annoying. - I have a shirt that says, "Bubby's little Motsuball." Could we get him a shirt that says "Bonnie's Little Prince"? - That would be on the menu, for sure. And it would be, they'd have something about his butt curtain, you know. like it would be a whole thing. Like we could call, oh, then the basement, like the little speakeasy in the basement's called, is called the butt curtain. - That's incredible. - Like into the speakeasy. - That's incredible. - It's gonna be good stuff. - Oh man, I really, I can have a butt curtain. - And then the food truck outside is Mama's little matzball, right? The food truck, yeah. - Mama's little matzball is gonna be there. I'm gonna be in a butt curtain for sure. - I'll meet you in the butt curtain. - We'll always have the butt curtain, you know? - Oh, you know to get in, you have to access it via a big jacket curtain. - Of course, and there's gotta be a secret word, a code word. I need to say it shamefully. (laughing) - Yeah, that's good. - So this is the Great Dane pub now, but for a long, long time, it was the Fesso tell. It starts in the 1840s. - Oh my. - This guy named George Fess. He emigrated to the US, and he came to Wisconsin. He was a grocer, and he opened a grocery store, and I mean, it's a restaurant, but we're calling it apparently an eating house. - Ooh, maybe it's what they used to call it before restaurants. But I did look up eating house, and it sounded like it was just kind of like, - It feels like a tavern or something. - That's what I thought, but it sounded like, the description I read. It sounded more like it was a, like a walk up stand. - Oh, like a food truck? - Kind of, yeah. Like when you go to like a Renaissance fair, and you like walk up to like a thing. - Oh, so it's just like, like, right, okay. So it's actually like, take away food. - But you're right, eating house sounds cozier, yeah. - Whatever. If we had to open an eating house today, it'd be different by definition. I'll tell you that. - It would not have any vowels in the name, and it would be like, eating house, and it would have like, oh my, oh, it's, and it would be like, there'd be like weird little, chairs that are plastic and knee-trip over them 'cause they're clear. - You know what I like about you? - What, no, I don't, 'cause I can't think of a one. - I feel like in third grade, we would have done some damage in the world of like, not paying attention because we'd get, it would be extremely bad. - I say this with love. I feel like it's gonna sound like an insult, but it's made purely out of life. - I feel honored by it. - We would not get anything done because we'd come up with one idea and have to see it through. It would be disastrous for everyone. - I feel like you'd be like, oh, 'cause five seconds ago, we were talking about the butt curtain pub or some show like that. - Yeah. - And now we're on, I don't remember where we went, eating house or whatever. - Oh, that's right. Our new industrial chic. Yeah, a boutique. - A boutique industrial chic nor region. - Scandinavian, don't forget Scandinavian eating house. That's right. - 100%, so he opened a grocery store and an eating house, which I guess is, if you're a grocer, and I mean, why not two birds one stone? - Yeah, you have a deli counter, you have some chairs. - Yeah, and the food is, I know it's fresh. These are my food. This is my food. So he ended up starting out there making a grocery store and eating house, but he did it right next to what is now currently the hotel. So I don't know if he already had his site set on this location or just in the beauty of storytelling, like there's a foreshadowing happening. - And we're both kind of, yeah. - He's bound to just be right next door forever. - Could be. - Eventually, after the grocery store, he wanted to open a hotel and specifically a hotel for the common man. - Oh. - Would you never see that? 'Cause I feel like every hotel's like trying to be like, for the business elite. - A luxurious boutique, yeah, exactly. - The industrial Scandinavian nor region. - For the business elite. (laughing) - And we're gonna scare him so many people. I love it. (laughing) - Basically, he just wanted a hotel for the common man and very conveniently, or he already had his site set on this, I'm not sure. The building he was working in was only two blocks from the major train station. And you know how history loves a fucking train station. - Oh, the train station. - Train stations. So he stayed in the area he's currently in. And he was like, if I'm building a hotel monitor, just build it right next to you or above, or within the same building facility as my grocery store and my restaurant. And it kind of became this weird Lego thing where he was over time just expanding, expanding, expanding. - Okay, okay. - So eventually he had a hotel and a restaurant. I don't know if he stuck with the grocery store. Maybe that was not worth it for him anymore. And he also, because this was a time when everyone traveled by horse, he underneath the hotel built 60 stable, so a full library. - Jesus, okay. - Smart. Construction started in the 1850s, depending on the source, just the 1850s. And basically this was the idea was for him to accommodate all classes of travelers and diners. So whether you were just here to eat or if you were there to stop by for the night. - For the common man. - The common man. It's so refreshing to not have to tell you that this was supposed to be the city's hub. You know, like I'm so over that. So he built, I think it ends up being a hotel, but I think for the first couple of decades when they were doing all this construction, it was more of a boarding house. Cause it sounds like he was renting a space here, a space here until eventually, like 20 years later, he was able to have like the full brick and mortar owned by him. And it'd be a tough time. - Right, and he had all the parking already situated underneath. - He sure did. He had a whole parking garage. - Really crazy. That is crazy that a library was a parking garage. - I was just, I couldn't get my mind out of that thought of like, is that a parking lot for like an early parking lot? - I needed to sit at that for a second. Let's see. Okay, but here's the problem. Cause he built this whole thing. I mean, three ventures, three men's stories. - Yeah, three men's stories so far. - And he ends up kind of shooting himself in the foot a little bit because although it was a boarding house, a library and a restaurant, it was a temperance building. So there was no alcohol served here. - Oh. - And I feel like if you're a curtain. - Nope. I feel like if you're parking your horse for the night, like you want to have some fucking grog. - I mean, pleat. That's the, that's the, that's. - Tell me I'm wrong. - That's like the, the only guarantee you'd think, you know? - Surely I'm not going to be a long journey. - If there's one thing in here, it's going to be beer. - Man, that's dark. - In fact, the Fest family owned this hotel for 130 years and never once offered alcohol. (laughing) - Wow, they were proud of that. Who broke that 130 year spell? Cause they really pissed off some ancestors, I betcha. - Well, let me remind you, it is now a great day in pub and brewing company. - Oh, I, how could I have forgotten? - The exact opposite of everything they've ever owned. - Brewing company. Wow, yeah, they're really messing with some ghosts here. - It was a, actually a few episodes back. I don't know if you would remember this, but do you remember I talked about Hatchet Granny? Her name was Carrie and Nation. - Yes. Carrie, oh my God, of course. - Yes, of course. - Yes, exactly. - She was a big part of the temperance movement and she would go to different establishments that were serving alcohol and she would just fucking protest riot destroy. - Yes. - There are businesses. And so this was like the only safe building in the entire town from Carrie A. Nation. - Geez. - And it was known to be one of the only places - She had her own VIP parking spot in the library. - Yes. - Her incredibly sober horse was parked right up front. And she was also parked by D. - Yeah. - It was one of the only places that she was able to say whenever she was in Wisconsin. So it was the only place she really went that she couldn't intend to destroy with a Hatchet while she was there, which is nice. It's a fresh one. - Wow, that's thoughtful of her. Although the business was operating throughout its construction and it essentially took like 40 years until it was completed, there's two fun facts I wanted to tell you. One is that the windows on the first floor and less things have changed since these articles came out. But the windows on the first floor are the same windows from the 1870s. - Oh wow, that's pretty cool. Thank you. And then the other fun fact is I saw the price of a room and I know you love an inflation moment. - Yeah. - The room costs $1.40. - Whoa. - Which today is still a fucking deal. It was, it's $48. - Oh wow, okay. - And then you think about, you probably get everything with that except Grog. - Yes, because the only other thing I could find was that a meal there 'cause if you're just stopping at the restaurant, a meal would cost $0.40. - Oh wow. - And which was basically like $15 now. - Wow. - It feels pricey. But for an entire hotel stay and a meal, it was like essentially $65. - Damn. Good deal. - I think it was a great deal. I would do that. So at 1875, this is while we're in the middle of construction. So he actually never really got to see the Fess Hotel fully completed. - Okay. - But George Fess, he dies of quote a brain fever. - Oh no. - I don't even know. - Oh, you hate to hear that. And his wife, Anna, carried on the hotel and all the expansions and for like 30 plus years was the sole proprietor of this. - Turn on the T totaling legacy. - Exactly. When she died, their son took over. And the Fess Hotel actually stayed open as a family run business until the 70s, making it even then one of the city's longest running business. But it carried on, it remained a hotel, just not a family run one. They sold to a different person. - Oh, I see. And it was a hotel from the 1850s to 1994. - Damn. - Yeah, that was a long hotel. In the time where it was owned by somebody else, the upper floors were rented out as office storage space. So it wasn't a full hotel, but that was also around the time when the ghosts started showing up. Fun fact, this is on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. And in 1994, this is when it became the Great Dane Pub and Brewing Company. I have to say this is the Madison location 'cause apparently it's a franchise. - Ooh. - And they're also now a stop on the local ghost tours because they are very open about there. - What a fun stop to have on a ghost tour, the Great Dane Pub. - I mean, literally, I hope that they're right in the middle so you can have like a little pub problem. - Right. - Or you start there and have a drink and then the tour starts. - I mean, it starts constant. They're probably all pubs. - That's a good point actually. You're totally right. That cannot be the only pub on that ghost tour. So this place has been haunted at least since it was a rental space upstairs. Mediums have come in and said that there are spirits everywhere. They said like from everywhere. They said like from the mundane to the horrifying, depending on the space, there were different types of ghosts. - Jesus. - I don't like that they're just so present. - Yeah, there's somewhere I guess it's as easy as they sensed an older man they're asking them for the time. Which is crazy 'cause I'm like, I don't think you want the time. I think you want the date, babe. Like it is, I think you want directions to the light. Whatever you're trying to get to, you're late. - You're wrong. - You're in going the wrong way. You're late. - I don't know. - But then there's also areas where it's just really rattling. Apparently there's an attic space that has like one of those pull down ladders and an exterminator had to go up into the attic, which is scary on its own. - Yeah, I mean, as I hear them clanging around in my roof, I'm like, it's already just dangerous and now you throw in a haunted attic. - Yeah, game over. - Mm-hmm. - Well, they had to go into the attic and I guess she like fell to her knees and said, "Oh my God, something horrible has happened here." - The exterminator said that? - She had a gift. - There's just cockroaches everywhere. Just dead cockroaches. - I was gonna say, I was kind of like, it's, she probably just saw like an infestation and when something horrible has happened. - And she's like, "This is way beyond my scope of practice." - I used to walk into my roach infested apartment all the time and go, "Oh my God, something horrible has happened here." - The faulty are me. (laughs) (bell dings) - I told Allison a long time ago and we moved into this house. I said, "You are not allowed to clutter your nightstand." - Hmm. - Real rich coming from someone who keeps a lot of clutter under their nightstand. The one thing Allison had a negotiate she was like, "Fine, I'm only keeping out my OCEO." - Oh, it's so nice. I keep mine out on the counter too, which like I've put most of my stuff away. I keep it on the counter because A, it's these beautiful glass bottles but like I use it every time I shower and I'm like, this actually, finally, I feel like my skin is actually reacting like the way I want it to to a skin product. So I'm with Allison and she made a good choice. - And it's also like this beautiful glass bottle. - I know. I don't even feel like it's from your 24 hour pharmacy. It feels like it. - Totally, very class. - Yeah, it's from, I don't know. I don't know where it's from. Have it, I don't know. - Malibu, I think, so close enough. - Yeah, the hyaluronic body serum is made for everyday use or when your skin is in need of revival, cooling, refreshing, weightless and powerfully hydrating. And with aloe, which helps deliver the immediate boost of hydration. - That's the secret, I guess. OCEO's hyaluronic body serum is multi-layer, hyaluronic power hydration for the entire body. And right now we have a special discount. Just for you, get 10% off your first order, site-wide with code [email protected]. - That's code [email protected]. So people have not only seen that man who asks for the time or I guess they don't see him. I kind of got the vibe that they just sense him, which is an interesting thing to sense. But people have also seen things like floating torsos in the basement. - Yeah. - Horrifying. They've also seen items violently swinging from the ceiling. So I guess like, you know how it offices people like have like a sharpie marker taped to the wall. So you don't lose it next to the bulls and bored and stuff. - No. - Huh. - But okay, I mean, I can follow that train of thought. I guess I just never seen that before. - It's like a sign and cheat or something and they'll just like tape a sharpie on a string or something. - Like a clipboard thing or something. - Yeah, okay, I got you, yeah. So apparently in the middle of the night, the manager was in the office by herself and all of a sudden the marker on the string started like flipping like fucking crazy all by itself. And then someone asked her what she did in response and she was like, I laughed, it went back to fucking work 'cause I don't, I have the job. I, I, I have to have the job. - In a storage space below in the basement, there's an area that the staff literally call the spooky room. - Oh no. Because it is so oppressive and dark and scary that not only do some staff refuse to go in there, but people have gotten the job, walked into the spooky room and quit their fucking job. - Yeah, I mean, if people are falling to their knees just doing a regular project and being like, I can't even stand it in here. Like, I can't, I just gotta feel funky in there. - What is the closest, like what's like the most dark, oppressive, haunted thing you've experienced? - Ooh, that's a great question. I think it's somewhere we went. - I agree. - Trying to think of where, what would you say? Do you have an answer? - I feel like every time I'm put in a dark, oppressive, haunted space, I think this is the worst. - Oh yeah, for sure, for sure. - But I mean, that first time alone in the basement at Bobby Mac, he's with some of us. - I think that's gotta be my answer. Like that was the scary. I think the way we like then pitched it more to be more fun, but like in the moment, like that was genuinely as like, I'm gonna die in this Bobby Mac, he fucking basement. Like, yeah, that was it. - You know what's so funny is though, like, that music thing, I mean, I'm just gonna start screaming right now, frankly. - Hours later though, I would say the complete opposite that that was the safest I've ever felt in the basement of Bobby Mac. - Yeah, it almost like didn't end up feeling as terrible afterward. Like in the moment I was like, I'm gonna die in this fucking basement. And then like, I mean, there was like a thing from the proud boys on the table. We were like, where are we? I mean, we were in Kentucky. So, I guess we're always just in these spaces. Wait, where did I go the other day, that thrift store, that also probably felt very impressive. No, I'm kidding, but the Walmart, yeah. - Yeah, yeah. - Windexile. - I mean, like if I saw some beer pringles and Bobby Mac, he's, I would not be surprised. - It is hot. - Dude, deeply hotning. Yeah, I think, but I'm trying to think of like, if there was a place where like, one of the, I feel like outside can sometimes be, I don't know if you guys that, one of the scariest. - Are you talking about that tour? - What tour am I talking about? I feel like I can't, my brain won't pull through. - No, no, no. The ghost tour that you and I went on in Kentucky, and you were like, "I'll fucking weird about that." What was it? - This is what I mean. Like, I think my brain wouldn't conjure it. Like, I was like, I need you to tell me. - You look at the building, you're like, I can't be over here, I can't be over here. - Oh, I don't, every time I drive past it, I don't look at it. I don't like to say the name of it. - And that's where Batman walked by, which is now your argument with the safest you'll ever be, but you couldn't even look at that building. - No, because as a kid, Batman was my shadowed person. Like, I would like-- - The hat man? - Batman was hat man. - Yeah, he was hat man. I think I missed-- - I didn't speak much English as a child, so. Hat man? - No, that. - Oh my God, well, I mean, I really, and I don't know if it was because we were-- - That building fucked me up, man. And I still drive past it, and I still won't look at it, and I'm not gonna say the name of it, so don't even ask people. - I feel like, when we were at Bobby Mackey's in the, I mean, that whole place felt really fucking creepy and scary, and I don't know if it was just abandoned, or if it was because we were in the middle of nowhere, and no one was coming to help. - Yeah. - Or because moments before we got there, someone was hiding in there, and the police had to come get him. - Yeah, that could have been part of the distress. - I think that was part of the stress. I feel like, but that basement really, I mean, for people who never got a chance to see that dungeon basement, I mean, it looks like we're people truly go to die. It was like such-- - It's just not. - And it's horrible. - I don't know though if it was like, if I was in my own head, and so that's why I was scary. I don't know if like, in a spooky way, like the ghost didn't like us really. - There was a creature down there called the crawler, that this lady had told us about. Like, there's a creature in this basement called the crawler, and then we literally got fucking footage of a little stick figure crawling along the walls. Like, yeah, I mean, it could have just been the vibes, but also, like, I think we were really. - I'm telling you though, at the end, when we did that Estus method, and like, I was just chatting it up with them, and like, all the suns singing. - The air change, and like, they were saying such nice things they were like, we're gonna miss you. - It's through me! I was a fucking channel. I'm just sitting there like, (laughing) - They were like, we had a lot of fun. Like, how do you feel about us leaving soon? We're bummed, you know, like, it was so sweet. Like, I was like, we just become like fucking besties? That's crazy. (laughing) - You should have been there. - I should have been there. I know, I'm kind of glad I wasn't, I'll be honest. - I would think that's probably the best ghost. - I love my husk behind in that moment for good reason. - I had a great time. I think that was probably my favorite paranormal experience I've had. - Yeah, we gotta keep that footage forever, never, never, never. - It was so good. It was so good. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a vessel. - I couldn't have done it that way. - You were so welcome, anytime. - Oh yeah, so this place is just super fucking scary. They had the spooky room, it's super scary, it's oppressive, boba. A man is seen walking up closed off stairs and I guess the staff have tried to stop him. - Now they don't, they just go, there he goes. - There he goes again, walking up those stairs. But originally they would say like, sir, like that's closed off, you can't be there. And before they could even finish a sentence, you vanish in front of them, horrifying. - Oh, whoopsies, uh, oh, and the basement, and sorry, the butt curtain, there are a bunch of pool tables and I guess they have racks on the wall for the pool sticks and people have seen the sticks knock themselves over one by one. - Oh, not for me, dog. - And also like what a mess, come on. - Like, keep it clean, be respectful. - Like please, get a grip. - Get a grip. - You said it, but I said it also after you and I meant it. - It was good, it was good, doubled up. - The pool cues, the little square blue guys. They've also been seen falling off the racks on their own and this is the most common haunting that happens here. - Isn't a cue this thing? - What's up? - Isn't the cue the, of the cue is that thing? - I thought so, what is the cue to you? The ball, the white ball, the triangle. - I thought the pool cues are the actual stick. Now I don't know if it was cue or cue, and I misspelled it. - Oh, chalk, like chalk, cue, like chalk. - Yeah, because the pool cue is the like thingy. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. - You're right, but maybe I'm, I think I'm wrong. I don't know. Cue or cue, use your imagination. Thank you, did not even catch that. The most common thing that happens here, though, is that the front desk's phone will ring from like as if other rooms are calling the front desk. It'll show that calls are coming from rooms that no longer exist. - Oh, come on. - They guess back when it first opened, they still have like switchboards. Like, I hate that, so the guests are still complaining from the beyond, like Jesus, like bring me more towels. Oh my God, that must be so annoying. - Well, the switchboard, I guess they had it even after it was no longer in use. I guess they just kept around. I'm guessing it was decoration or something, but it would still light up as if someone was trying to call that. - I don't love that. - And for years, even after the switchboard was turned off and they'd switched to more modern phones, certain phone lines that were completely disconnected from previous rooms would also still ring, and it would say that like this room wants you. - Yuck. - And to this day, at the front desk, the phone will ring when people know that rooms that still exist but are incredibly vacant. People are still calling from empty rooms. - Yuck. - Get out of here. - Something that the ghosts that are calling are actually George and Anna Fess, upset by all the alcohol at what is now a pub and brewery, and their temperate is like a liminal room that's not existing anymore, calling down to the front desk, like. - Get the beer out. - It's like, whatever it takes to get all the fucking beer at a dark afterlife. - Carrie A. Nation would be pissed. - Carrie. So there's a ghost tour company that I've heard of called American Ghostwalks. - Oh yeah. - Their origin story actually comes from the Great Dane pub. - No way. - Because the founder was there one time and asked a waitress if the place was haunted, and the waitress said, and I quote, "Well, I've seen at least two ghosts, "but you should probably talk to my manager "because she's seen four." (laughs) - Not my problem. - And I guess that got the future founder of American Ghostwalk's ghost tour company. That got her all like jazzed up to go start creating that the company, and that's cool. Since she opened it, she now has 25 locations, fun fact, all because of the Fess Hotel Great Dane pub. And my last fun fact for you is that in 2021, there was construction going on right next to the hotel and by some of the building next door, getting destroyed, more exterior building of the Fess Hotel was exposed. Does that make sense? - Yes, like yes, yes it does. - Like basically the tower next to it came down, and so they were able to see the side of the building. And all of a sudden, they realized that entire time, since the other building had come up, there had been a ghost sign that was preserved on the side of this building. For people who don't know a ghost sign, is like when you look at an old building and like you can still see the old painted advertisement. - My favorite thing. - Which I, I thought it was so fine that like, I'm talking about ghosts and everything mentioned, those ghosts sign, but it actually doesn't have anything to do with ghosts. It's just that. - I love that. - The weathered artifact made from a past time. - Vintage, yeah. - Yes, your year. - So anyway, I do have a picture of the ghost sign for you. So that was hidden until 2021. It's like an original preserved sign of the hotel's ads. - Oh my God, how cool is that? So yeah, if it were exposed to probably what it got in all. - Yeah, we're waiting. - Now they can like take, preserve it, that's sick. That is so cool. - So it says for people, it says, "Fest hotel, 75 rooms, 30 baths, free showers, rates daily and weekly, and then it says coffee. Coffee shop, coffee something." - Coffee and something. - Wow. - Yeah, so that is the-- - That is so, and the building is so cool too. - I, God, if I ever bought a building, it better have a ghost sign. That's all I have to say. And if there isn't, I will hire scenic people to make a fake ghost sign. - So everyone's like, "Oh my God, what's the story there?" And I'll go, "That's for me to know." - Mm-hmm, you know? - That's a ghost sign. - Yeah, none of your business actually. Back up. - None of your business. No lady in white. - Shocking. - I know. - She only goes to the places that aren't for the common man. - Well, one, good point. And two, no grog. Come on. - No grog. - She's not going to be there with no grog. Like, I-- - She's the lady in white. - Why would you wait there for your, like, long-lost husband, forever without being able to get fucked up about it? - Totally. Why don't we watch the fucking horizon with nobody in your hand? Come on, don't be ridiculous. - They were all looking at that damn horizon. - Like, there was so many horrible horizons. - Jesus, fuck. - Imagine all you have is the horizon. - No internet, no Netflix, no. - No grog, even. - No job. Oh my God, you have to write with your hands. - No grog. - Oh, good. - All right. Good job. (bell dings) I'm always on the hunt for a perfect sports bra. And I was so excited when Dose became a sponsor because I was like, "I'm gonna give this a run "for its money, okay?" Oh, and you did say, yeah, so we were supposed to record last week and then we ended up pushing it because Christine was like, "I there's so much information here." Yeah, and I like, it's annoying because I like knew that. I should have known that and I had to leave town so it just ended up being not working. But you're good at that. You just totally reminded me that. like this is something you worked really hard on, okay. - Yeah, it's a doozy. And I remember when it happened, okay, this is the University of Idaho murders. - Okay. - Do you remember this? - No. - 2022? - I know this. - It was University of California sorority girl murders. - So I don't know this one, I don't know about Idaho. - Okay, it was, it was, and recently, well, okay, we'll get into it, but this is a doozy. All right, so this is gonna be a two-parter. I'm just gonna tell you in advance. - Okay. - We're in Moscow, Idaho. It's a town of roughly 26,000 residents, primarily known as a college town, home to University of Idaho, Moscow campus, and thousands of students attended on campus. King Road is where this house was located. It was an off-campus housing for students. It was near the sorority and fraternity rows and campus itself, so students involved in Greek life often rented there. 11/22 King Road was one of those houses. So in 2022, we had five friends sharing the house. Kaley Goncalves, Madison, Maddie, Mogen, Zana Crenodal, Dylan Mortensen, and Bethany Funk. Zana, ooh, I just got full body shell, sorry, that was weird. Zana had a golden doodle named Murphy that she'd adopted with her ex-boyfriend and she and her ex were still friends, so Murphy, the dog would come back and forth between their houses. So Murphy was often at the 11/22 King Road House. Bethany, the roommate, lived on the ground floor, which was also the basement. I'm actually gonna send you a picture of the house real quick because it shows you just like what kind of building we're talking about. Just looks pretty standard off-campus housing. But it had access, ground floor access from the basement. Like you can see, there's a parking, like a car park there. And then it also had like second floor access 'cause it's on a hill. Oh yes, I see. And so there's like multiple entrances into the house. And that's the house where these friends lived. So there were multiple entrances. You could access Bethany's room or go up the stairs from that basement door or you could access the second floor directly. Zana and Dylan lived on the second floor. The house was backed up against a hill, so the second floor also had the ground access and there was a sliding door in the kitchen that also had access. Wow. Maddie and Kayley's rooms were on the third floor and that had a balcony, which you can see there but no ground floor access. Right, right. Kayley and Maddie had been best friends for years. They met in sixth grade and quickly became inseparable. Maddie was the kind and quiet one and Kayley was like the loud boisterous powerhouse. They were basically like perfect counterparts and they met as little girls. Their families became best friends. They went to high school together and then they applied to the exact same colleges because they were like, we're not even going to different colleges. Like that's how close they were. Okay. So they were thrilled to attend the University of Idaho together and they moved into the King Road House where they could always come home to each other. They both got involved in sororities. They befriended Bethany Dylan and Zana and other friends that didn't live with them. Eventually, they met Ethan and Hunter Chapin and they were members of, please tell me if I'm saying this right. Sigma Kay, is that right? Okay. They had joined Sigma Kay at fraternity just a few minutes walk from the house. Ethan and Hunter were triplets and their sister Maisie was also a student at University of Idaho. Oh wow. Their parents were so like proud of their three kids. They dropped the triplets off at campus, went to parents' weekend in 2022 and they said on the way home, they high-fived and said we've done it. Like we raised three awesome kids and just dropped them off at college together. Like they're best friends. Maisie, Hunter and Ethan, extremely close. Hunter said we were friends with everyone but we were best friends with each other. That's awful. I know, I know like this is gonna break my heart. It was unfortunate. It's a beautiful, but I'm already upset. Ethan was born first, his personality. He was like the boldest, most magnetic one. Hunter and Maisie, although they were all triplets obviously, they looked up to him as like the leader. Kaylee and Maddie were fun, deeply kind people. So when they joined the campus and like the group and the sororities, they just clicked right in with the rest of the group. Zana likewise was a wild child described by her friends who didn't know a stranger and so they all were drawn to each other. But as a French friend group drew closer, they noticed that Ethan and Zana specifically were drawn to each other. They were both like the goofiest, most outgoing people in the group and Hunter, Ethan's brother was like, they were like the same exact person. So they started dating and like fell in love immediately and they were like the forever couple, you know, in the friend group. Like there was no separating them. And what was both their names? That was Zana, X-A-N-A, and Ethan. And Ethan, okay, okay. And Ethan's the triplet. Right, he's the oldest of them. I thought it was the other, yeah. I just have my brains thinking about separating him from all the other triplets. Oh, I see, yes, he's the oldest, yeah, technically. So they would hang out at the King Roadhouse almost every day, all of them in Moscow, a very small town vibe, very tight-knit community. November 12th, 2022, pretty ordinary day, they got together at the King Roadhouse to hang out before school game, which was like a big deal, you know, they took photos together outside and Kayleigh posted some of the photos to her Instagram with the caption, "One lucky girl to be surrounded by these people every day." And I'm gonna send you the pictures because like it really, this is, you might remember this if you see any of these pictures, I'm not sure, but it was pretty, it's like all over TikTok was the biggest place that it was kind of. Yes, I do remember this picture, but I cannot place it. Okay, well, then I guess I do know about it, but I even clearly, back then, I didn't know it very well. It was hard to avoid at the time. I remember, and we'll get into it, but I remember actively having to avoid looking into it because there was so much misinformation. It was like, yeah, it gets crazy. Have they looked like they're all just so happy? I know, like it was one of those, like, when you hear people talk about it, they were like, no, they really were just having the times of their fucking lives. Like, yeah, so this was a Saturday, and there was plenty for them to do, even in a small town. Amazing sorority was hosting a formal, and she just wanted a casual fun night, so she invited her brother Ethan as her date, you know, just to like have friends over, and some of his friends were attending too. So that evening, she and her brother Ethan went to the formal by 9 p.m., some of their group moved to a party at Sigma Chi near the King Roadhouse, and Maisie decided to call it a night, and she didn't feel like partying, went home to bed. Ethan went to Sigma Chi with his friends, tried to persuade his sister to join them, and said, please come hang out, we all want you here. But Maisie was too tired, so Ethan let it go, and texted her, love you. Josie was likewise their other friend, in bed fairly early that night at her own place, and she thought to herself, oh, there'll be another party, there's always another party. I'm not gonna go hang out tonight. And that's just very famous last words, you know, to hear. Yeah, very. It is. While both girls went to sleep, Ethan partied with Ziana, his girlfriend, and his brother Hunter. Kaley and Matty were likewise having a late night, they hung out at a place called Corner Club, which was a well-known sports bar in town, and around 1.30 a.m., the two of them left Corner Club and stopped at Grubb Truck, a food truck, which was one of the only options to eat out in Moscow after midnight. So by 2 a.m., all four of them were back at the King Roadhouse. Bethany and Dylan were also there, they came home earlier, so all five roommates were home that night. Bethany, Dylan, Kaley, Ziana and Matty, as well as Ethan, who was sleeping with, I mean, like sleeping in Ziana's bed. Right, it's because, yeah. Yeah. So Ethan often stayed over with Ziana. They basically said he basically lived there, or they said that he basically lived there. That's how much time he spent there. At 4 a.m., a door dash driver made a delivery to Ziana. Bethany and Dylan were each in their own bedrooms. Dylan fell asleep, but just after 4 a.m., she woke up to some strange noises in the house. She heard Murphy bark, and that's the golden noodle, and this was very unusual because this dog rarely barked. So she thought like in the back of her mind, like maybe Kaley's playing with the dog or dancing with the dog, but then Dylan thought she heard Kaley running, and she thought she heard Kaley say someone was in the house, but she was like half awake. Dylan opened her door and called out Kaley's name, then shut the door, called her roommates on the phone, but no one answered. Soon after, Dylan opened her door again and thought she heard someone crying. She thought maybe it sounded like Kaley in the second floor bathroom, and remember, this is the middle of the night, it's like 4 a.m. She later thought it might have been Ziana, she wasn't sure, but she heard a man say something like, "It's okay, I'm going to help you." "Oh my God." She later said, "But it wasn't in like a nice way. It was just weird and it was a voice I've never heard before." Dylan called out to Kaley again, but heard nothing. Terrified, she shut her door briefly, then opened it a third time. She stood in utter silent shock as she watched a man dressed in all black, walk past, right past her, look at her and leave through the sliding glass doors. And didn't hurt her? Mm-hmm, and she's the only survivor. One of. Okay. Dylan told the police that he saw her, this man, but he didn't say anything, he just walked right past. They looked at each other and he just left. She tried to contact her roommates by phone. She didn't know who this guy was. No one answered, but Bethany, the other roommate replied from the basement just before 430 and said, like, I haven't heard anything. So Bethany is the only other one she can get ahold of who's in the basement. Wow. Okay. And Bethany just like locked his head with this or anything. Yeah. down stairs. So. Wow. Which is crazy because I thought for sure like the first floor people were the ones that were going to be in the most danger. It's a little bit weird. Exactly. It's like the ups. Yeah. It is. It is. Oh God. She hadn't heard anything. Dylan said no one is answering. I'm going to read some of the texts here because I mean it does also so recent. Like that's the other creepy thing is like to see all the texts and like pictures and it's all just so recent and so Dylan and Bethany are texting. And Bethany is like I haven't heard anything. Dylan said no one's answering. I'm really confused right now. Bethany replied yeah dude what the fuck Bethany said Zanna was wearing all black. Like you can see in the picture. And Dylan said no it's like a ski mask almost like what she saw the person wearing like she said I saw someone in black and Bethany was like well maybe it was Zanna and she said no it was not Zanna. This person had a ski mask. Bethany told Dylan to make a run for it to her bedroom downstairs and she did. She spent the rest of the morning it's like to her bedroom so she ran down to Bethany's bedroom and they spent the rest of the morning in there. The early morning hours felt like a blur at 7.30 a.m. Bethany made some phone calls to her parents. Dylan spent a few hours on Instagram and Snapchat and then finally just before 10.30 Dylan texted Kayleigh and Maddie are you up and there was no response. Just before noon Dylan called another friend Emily and told her that something weird had happened last night. Emily remembered Dylan saying something like I don't really know if I was dreaming or not but I'm really scared. Can you come check out the house. Emily made a joke about bringing pepper spray because nobody was like actually worried something had happened. She said they've had never even locked a door in this town. Like it's just not something you did. And I remember we had a in college we thought someone broke in it ends up being just like the curtain rod fell. But like it was a loud scary sound and so it is scary. And we were like kind of it turned into like a a light hearted laughing through it before we really went out to check what happened. Well they had an inside joke too about like oh sometimes like a pan would fall and we'd all be like oh yeah oh it's just in the kitchen. And you don't really think this could happen to you so of course you're playing yapping like all bring the pepper spray. These kids are like 21 years old 20 you know like they're kids like yeah it's just I'm glad you said that because it does get into a lot of like victim blaming later as you can imagine with the two girls not calling 9-1-1 right away. Just really. So anyway she they were joking like sure I'll bring pepper spray ha ha right. So Hunter Johnson had stayed so Hunter Johnson had stayed the night with Emily so they walked over to the house together and when they arrived Bethany and Dylan were standing outside and Hunter decided to go in. Josie arrived to and as soon as she went inside the house itself fell off immediately she was like something is not right as soon she walked in. Hunter came back down stairs push Josie outside with Emily Bethany and Dylan told them to call 9-1-1 and tell the operators there was an unconscious person in the house. So at 1156 Dylan made the call but she was so panicked that Josie had to take over and they repeated what Hunter had said about an unconscious person but then Hunter told the dispatcher that Zana wasn't breathing and so now the friends are like hearing this second hand. The group became overwhelmed by terror and confusion the 9-1-1 call like you can listen to it's chaotic like they're passing the phone around the dispatchers like I need to talk to one person only I mean the kids don't these young adults do their kids they these young adults they don't know what happened so it's like they can't give much more information than like we're at the house we're confused someone needs to come but so it's just a long rambling kind of chaotic phone call the police finally arrive again like nobody thinks anything has happened maybe someone's drunk or whatever but of course as soon as they hear like someone's not breathing they send emergency services and paramedics are on their way. Josie later recalled thinking that even if her friends were dead at least paramedics were coming and we would be able to revive them but when the paramedics arrived they left like they turned around almost immediately and they didn't bring a single person out with them so the group is like well what's going on. Another friend named Ava looked outside and saw police putting up caution tape and she ran over as soon as she saw Emily and Hunter's faces she knew something really bad had happened and she asked Emily where Zana and Emily barely could speak it but she just whispered she's inside and I think she's dead. Now Hunter chape in a different Hunter Ethan's brother was on his way to the house from the Sigma Chi house and one of his front brothers had woken him up and told him they were police at his brother's house. All right his brother's girlfriend's house Hunter wasn't like alarmed her surprise because this house often got noise complaints and they just assumed like oh the party had gotten too wild last night. So he said I wasn't worried Ethan was six foot four and 220 pounds I was like kill be fine. When Hunter got there and didn't see Ethan he assumed his brother was inside helping whoever was in trouble but then he saw his friend's expressions looking at him like the world had ended he said. Hunter approached him the other Hunter approached him and told him that Ethan and Zana were gone. Hunter asked where they'd gone to and the other Hunter said no like I think they were murdered last night. Hunter called their sister Maisie the other triplet who rushed over and then called he called his mom. He told her that Ethan and he didn't know how to tell his mom and of course how do you tell a mom that their son's dead. She's at the grocery store she her name's Stacy she answers the phone her son says Hunter says Ethan's not here and she's like she's back in Washington and she's like what do you mean and where is he and she's like he's not here and she said I don't understand and finally said well where is he and he said she said where is he and he said you don't understand Ethan and Zana are not on this earth anymore that was the only way he could like bring himself to tell his mom. So Stacy left her car in the aisle drove home called her husband and said Ethan was killed but she didn't know anything more than that they just packed their bags and drove to town. I can't like that's like a 100 year long car ride or drive to the camp at nightmare. Nightmare outside the house everyone was waiting for information from the police like they're just sitting basically on the road like in their pajamas like crying and waiting for any information but no one's telling them anything. They were becoming frustrated and angry and then all of a sudden all their phones rang or get like a bit a buzz. There is something called a vandal alert which is the University of Idaho like alert texts. They receive a vandal alert to all of their phones. This is the University of Idaho mascot and they're referred to as a vandal so they get these vandal alerts about critical situations on campus. The vandal alert told students that police were investigating a homicide on King Street and this is the first that these they had heard any confirmation that this was a homicide like they had been thinking maybe if Santa wasn't breathing like which they were still trying to process maybe she had had too much to drink or something and something terrible to happen. But now they're getting text messages from the University saying a homicide occurred inside their house and they're like all sitting outside going what and so they start kind of shouting at the police and going like it would have been nice if someone told us this before everyone knew you know at the same time and they assumed it was Zana but like Bethany and Dylan didn't know who had stayed over. They didn't know if Ethan had even slept there. They didn't know if Kaley and Maddie were still there and had gone to bed that night like they didn't even know how many people were still in the house if their friends were out at someone else's house. They just couldn't get a hold of them. Then they got a second vandal alert which said Moscow police continues to investigate the death of four people near campus. Oh, fuck. So now they're playing the process of elimination game of like this person this person this person. Well, they were hoping at least one of them would not have been in the house, but it turns out all four of them were. That was how they found out that Kaley, Maddie, Zana and Ethan were all four dead in the house. Josie began yelling at the police furious in grief that nobody had told them anything and Hunter Johnson later said we were all cold, we were all scared. We were there for a long time. Our brains continued to spiral. We watched the ambulance come and we watched them immediately leave. The police were like we didn't know the university would send out texts. The university had just kind of done that without really thinking, I guess. They were all separated and questioned by police individually. Meanwhile, Maddie's boyfriend, Jake, failed to get in touch with Maddie so he called her mom and said Karen, do you know what's going on in Moscow right now? He told her there was apparently an open homicide investigation at Maddie's house and her mom was like what? And he said, well, we don't know who's been killed. So Karen starts calling her daughter Maddie, but couldn't get a hold of her. And so she tells Maddie's stepdad's Scott and says, well, Maddie and Kaley are fine. I'm sure they're fine. Let's go down and have lunch or there. Let's pick her up. We'll ask what happened and make sure she's okay. So Karen called the Moscow police from the car who confirmed there had been a homicide at Maddie's address, but could give them no further information. I can't give it a magic fucking tour. Well, I think they just like didn't allow that to be a possibility at the time. They were like, well, we'll go get her, you know. And I know, but to just hear like we can't give anything, we can't tell you anything. I'd be like, oh my god, like this is killing me. They imagine that it'd been Zanna or one of the girls' other friends. They were like, we'll just go pick up Maddie and Kaley, drive them home. But when they arrived, an officer took them to a private room and said there was not just one victim. There were four victims and Maddie and Kaley are both dead. Stacey and Jim, the parents of the triplets, also arrive at the police station and they learn that Ethan is dead. It's just crazy. Because the night before the three triplets had been together, like spending that evening together and Stacy had actually looked at their phone, their locations in the life 360 app and like felt so content in her heart that like all three of her triplets, like all three of her kids were together. Like that she didn't have to worry about them and she was like she just remembered looking and feeling like I have each other. Yep. And went to bed. Ooh, yeah. So Jim said in an interview, it drives me crazy because I always wanted to protect my family and there was nothing I could have done instantly he was taken and I couldn't do a thing about it. The families were, you know, booked into hotels, Hunter Johnson, who was the one who had walked in and like seen whatever he had seen and then ushered everyone out and had basically been like the leader of the day. They started to like basically crash out because it's like he'd been the one all day, the point person he'd been the one to be like to tell everyone what had happened to tell Hunter his brother was dead, like to keep everyone out of the house to talk to police. So he starts like really feeling the effects of this trauma. And Emily later said he had actually saved most of them from a lot more trauma by refusing to let anyone inside because they would have wandered up looking, you know, if he hadn't like refused to let them in. He really took one for the team and a really bad way. Yeah, absolutely. As the day progressed, Ava described him in complete shock, looking like a ghost. He and Emily couldn't sleep that night. They didn't know anything still. They just heard the words isolated and targeted in the news reports. And they were like isolated and targeted. Like, what is this? I mean, you've got to feel like you woke up in a fucking time warp, you know, yeah, horror movie. The reports were meant to reassure the rest of the town that there was no further danger like the killer wasn't on the loose, you know, but then the friends were like, well, what do you mean? Like, how do you know that? And who is it? And how like are we safe? Like, we're part of the group. Like, it just didn't make sense. And they didn't feel safe, you know? No. And my first thought too would be like one of them knows I saw them totally walked away. I'm absolutely next to. And then they're saying, like, don't worry, this was targeted. And it's like, well, to me too, like, it's just all right. All very confusing. They said they didn't sleep for days. Like, were they being stalked? Is this and they could get no information, you know, and really staying in the house? No, no, no, they were staying in hotels. Yeah, around Moscow. Well, these two were staying at their apartment. They didn't live in the house. So. The Emily and Hunter, the other Hunter lived, lived off property. But yeah, a lot of them talked about like just not sleeping in the days after every sound made them jump. They were like terrified that they'd be next. They didn't, again, they didn't even know what had happened. They just heard like targeted homicide and never saw their friends again. Would be a really bad time for the pan to fall in the kitchen. Totally, exactly, exactly. They said every sound made them jump for days. There was just more silence from police. Everyone was terrified. Parents were calling the school demanding answers. Like, but how the data students was like, this is not something I was prepared for. In lieu of police statements, the mayor spoke to the media, but he also didn't have any information. So it was like, they're just like setting out comforting words, but it's just like making everything more convoluted and confusing. It had actually been more than six years since the last homicide in Moscow. And he described the city's plan about major crime as woefully deficient. Like this was not something this town was equipped for whatsoever. Three days after the murders on November 16th, Moscow police held an extremely brief press conference where all they did was confirm that Zana, Ethan, Maddie and Kaley were all dead and that they had all been stabbed to death. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. And also that sounds like a man. I hope I'm getting everyone's names right. But it sounds like original hunter who went up and saw, I'm saying original hunter, because we're two of them. It sounds like if they were stabbed to death for him to just come downstairs and say she's unconscious. He was saving them even further grief. That's what I wonder, because we don't know the extent of what he saw. Okay. But he saw either someone on the ground. And like, I don't know how much. I don't know what he saw. But yes, like what you're saying, it's what I wondered as well. Like how. How much was this thing that he saw that he would but but maybe but then he said, oh, all I saw was that someone was unconscious. So it's like, maybe he just saw and didn't and he knew himself not to go any further, you know, I don't know. But I was wondering that exact same thing. So a reporter asked about witnesses living in the house and why they didn't call 911 until hours after the murders occurred. The police chief responded, I don't think that I ever said they were witnesses. I said they were there. So despite his defense on behalf of Dylan and Bethany, tens of thousands people would soon be asking these same questions. The police basically just zip their lips after this. They were like, we don't have any more information. We don't compromise any of our leads. But everyone, the world was watching this unfold and people were becoming obsessed. And this is one like, I remember TikTok was going crazy about this. I mean, it was nuts. Reporters from major media outlets began hounding the victim's families and friends, Karen remembered someone approaching her while she was trying to get the mail. And she was like, I, they didn't even know her daughter's name. They said, like your daughter was one of the people killed, right? Like can we talk about it? And she's like, can we talk about it? Can we talk about it? Can we talk about this situation? She said, get out of here. Like you nosy motherfucker. Get out of here. Get a fucking spine. Yeah, boy. So she just became afraid to leave the house. Obviously Hunter Chapin, the brother of Ethan began receiving as many 20 calls a day from like mainstream media outlets asking for interviews. He and all his friends were getting DMs constantly on all their social media. And then of course, content creators took over and YouTubers, podcasters, TikTokers became like, you know, armchair experts and started dissecting every shred of information. And this is when I remember going, this is going to get bad and messy. People are making leaps and bounds that like, I know if I watch this, I'll be like, Oh, interesting. Like I'm not even putting my brain into that pattern. And I've always, I'll tell you a big case. I remember, yeah, in case people need to hear it again about you. I've always appreciated that on and that's where you drink. You have intentionally waited until all the facts were out there before you reported on something. Oh, thank you. I do not need to find out something and then have to like, like, take a back later. Yeah. And I only watch like sources where I'm like, I'm because I'm like, how you can go so easily down. I know that like, I do that. You can go so easily down a rabbit hole. And like when it's people's families and lives, I mean, it got really bad. They basically started like taking every piece of like information and trying to turn it into something, you know, and then they started visiting Moscow and like basically just harassing random people in town and asking questions and recording people in their homes and walking into classrooms on campus. Just constant harassment when you all you want to do is not think about this for five years. Yeah, when you just want to try to get through the day. One documentary covering the case even shows a tick tocker who like used like a real estate listing to go through the house and like give a tour of the house with like creepy music underneath. Oh, and she I know it's really get it fucking really real. Yeah, she says we're going to go into Zana's bedroom and it's like this viral trending like creepy music underneath and she like walks into the like, come on. This is this is not my first thought but is like my third or fourth thought is like this is also additionally violating for the people who are who survived this. Yeah, it's like well now everyone knows my fucking house looks like and I'm already scared of anyone coming over at any point. Yeah, I mean they're not living there anymore. It's definitely yeah, just a crime scene at this point. But yeah, it's like the memory of that place with your friends. Oh, yeah, they're they're fully like getting completely doxed from the inside out like people are stalking them people are DMing them and harassing them and bullying them and threatening them. Hunter Johnson, who is the only one to enter the crime scene and like basically held down the fort. He became a target because a police body cam video surface from a prior noise complaint where it showed that he had zip ties on his wrist so he'd been playing like some game like champagne and shackles some like frat game, you know, where you like zip tie like Edward 40 hands or something like that. Yeah, exactly where you zip tie like your tie to each other until you finish your drinks whatever. But like nobody wanted to hear that even though like I hear that I'm like, yes, that's exactly what they were doing because I know what I've been to college. I know what don't college kids do. But like, I guess people were like, oh my god, he has zip ties. He must be the killer and it's like, what are you talking about this was like a noise complaint from like another time. Like it's just weird. I'm like, I it's too much. They believe the zip ties were like clues and they said like he killed his best friends and and then of course like Emily's girlfriend so that Emily was in on it too. Dylan and Bethany were scrutinized again and again because they hadn't called 911. But it was like 4 30 a.m. and they were confused and they knew each other was awake. So they were like. And also like as like someone in my mid 30s, of course I would call the police immediately. But when I was 21, I would think like someone might have had a friend over and like I'm all drinking and like and it's dark and people are always in and out of the house. Exactly. They don't want the doors. It could just be somebody and they especially when the guy just looks at you and keeps walking. And also like this is like a silly little thing, but if. When I was 21 I was scared to call the police. I've called the police so many times since I know right now Once you moved LA you're like never mind. It's just a part of my job I just like oh, I just see something say something, but when I was 21 I would have been like if I'm calling 911 like it has to be an incredibly serious emergency And I don't want to bother anybody and totally and I lived in DC But like you and these kids live in lived in like a college town where it's like there's not like Crime on you know like there's not like homicides on the corners, you know also when I was 21 I still had that like impervious mindset of like nothing could hurt me. Nothing would ever happen in my circle of college So I wouldn't believe something I would be in total denial that anything could happen to me for me to even want to call I just I would just to fight so quickly of like it's four in the morning someone's finally going home Yeah, and like it was just some dude and whatever they got him rid of him and like now I'm with my friend and Yeah, we're just gonna sleep in the same room tonight and figure it out in the morning. Yeah, so that yeah They got they started getting I mean just online hatred for the girls especially grew so strong people were posting things like It's Dylan Dylan's fault her friends died. I hope she feels the guilt forever and it haunts her laughing emojis Girl if you ever hear this that is a fuck of my don't yeah. Oh, no. Oh my god And quote you can't convince me that the remaining roommates are innocent IDC. I don't care And these got like thousand like people were just like so evil It's just rough at 417 a.m. A security camera near the house picked up the sound of a dog barking voices Possibly whimpering and allowed thud People didn't think it was possible that like the camera could pick up the sounds But Dylan didn't know what was happening and it's like you don't know what's happening. It's a dog barking And she also heard the dog barking and she also heard voices Whatever we oh my god so did Hank hey, hey enough We're teaching him the word enough. It doesn't work yet Hank enough. Yes. Good job. Yes. Oh wow. He had to do one more good job chicken. Oh your treats are somewhere else Where's go get mommy? Where's mommy? We taught him where's mommy? Oh the famous heart glasses got a little trippy this week I got to wear them around to the new some new locations and people were like what are those bad boys and they got some air time man, they were nailing it. That's zenny.com/podcast promo code podcast 15 So some people even pointed out like if she had called that in one one right away She may have been killed, you know, because she was opening the door closing the door And so but they were like it just wasn't she couldn't win, you know Um in an interview with a detective Dylan had said she'd been drinking so she was woken up like from a really deep sleep at 4.30 a.m She was really out of it. Everything was blurry and confusing Um, I don't think she needs to explain any further, but apparently people just couldn't take her explanation um Courtney Franklin who teaches courses at Washington State University, which include violence against women and gender and crime later said in a documentary that in a threatening or dangerous situation like this behavior that seems wrong or strangers actually quote exactly how we should expect someone to behave because you're not going to be necessarily thinking logically and rationally folks are not going to understand that this behavior is a behavior of someone who has just experienced trauma like you like don't know what you're gonna do 100% And people just can't wrap their minds around that um People just continued attacking Dylan and Bethany online news outlets were posting articles suggesting the girls could be criminally charged for failing Oh shut the fun one then it's like I wonder where are you getting this information you're just making it up And honestly I would still feel this way. I want to say when I was 21, but I'd still feel this way If if someone ever threatened any criminal charges on me, I'd fucking lose my mind, especially like on top of Just like a scared 21 year old who is fully traumatized who just lost a bunch of my fucking best friends And now you're gonna throw at me that I'm going to jail. I would witness the killer and probably escaped with my fucking life But like on a dime, you know, I would be on spiral also Maybe we were intentionally glossing over this did the dog also die No, oh, okay. Yeah, no the dog did not die great Um, so Maddie's boyfriend Jack wasn't even in Moscow the night of the night of the murders He was in Boise, but he even was receiving like death threats and stuff And he's like I wasn't even in town like it's just these poor kids He stayed with Maddie's parents for a while where he felt safe But then online slews found out that the grub truck where they'd gotten late night food had like they did a twitch They do a twitch live stream where they basically live stream their food truck all night and people could just like tune in and watch like people order food So watching back through archives viewers found Maddie and Kaylee in the footage And it was hours before they were killed and you can like see them come up and order food and like It's just so unsettling People became convinced that someone at the food truck had followed them home that night and soon everyone it like kind of found this one guy in the background They hummed in on him and said like he's wearing a hoodie and waiting on his food. He's looking at them strangely And they of course pretty quickly figured out who he was fully doxed him Tick tockers posted videos of him at the food truck like slowed down saying who is food truck guy University of Idaho frat boy possible stalker this poor fucking guy like he literally fucking decided Hey, it's like a Friday night and I'm gonna go put on my favorite black hoodie and go get me something from the grub truck And now he's like big mistake. Yeah, wow The catcher even said always purposely bumping into Kaylee out in public alarming siren emoji Another friend Ashlyn Saw people calling the home a party house with an open door policy and she was like that's not at all true This was a safe place with a good group of friends that went in and out, but it wasn't a party house And it wasn't somewhere where randos were walking through this was like Really respectful and like a nice house kids. Yeah like a nice house with a dog and a Group of good friends Um in a police interview Dylan told an officer she didn't even know how the attacker had gotten in she said I usually lock the doors. We've never had problems like this before Rumors started that Ethan was involved in drug dealing like literally any possible Avenue you could think of that like people would come up with some sort of theory That he had given his roommates like laced drugs and they'd all overdosed was one of the theories Other said like a drug dealer had killed it killed everyone like as revenge Spoiler alert none of this is true, okay The rumors about Ethan became so severe that his parents became shaken and asked mazy and hunter Like was Ethan involved in drugs and they were like no like don't let any of this get to you like none of this is real Ethan was not involved in any sort of drug scene This just all seemed random and horrifying It's also so heartbreaking for the parents because now they're like all of a sudden questioning their own kids Their own reality of like what it was even going on um A friend of the group named David also became like an obsession for some investigators Because he was a volunteer sober driver for the sigma kai party and he was asking People if they needed rides that night so people were like oh my god. He's like trying to get people in his car It's like he's the dd. Shut the fuck up everybody. Oh my god Someone Message him even if the cops don't get you someone will I promise you Enjoy everything while you still can and I hope you fry and he's like I was literally just The driver that night and like like literally like you're doing a good deed. You're like yeah I'm intentionally trying to make sure everyone gets home safe as a safe person and now I'm being told that I'm a violent dangerous person Gonna fry for the rest of my life. Yeah. Oh my god. Wow So I mean I scared not only of like the killer But like that some vigilante he's gonna show up and like punish them for something they didn't do you know I I mean I I can understand like your trauma after trauma A whole college full of like young kids who One are just young kids and like nosy and want to like speculate But on top of it, they also lost their friends. So there's some like vested interest in this Like I can understand why everyone's a target for a second But like the way that this is like so blowing out of purple like crazy to like turn this into yeah, it's just Yeah, became like a circus a total circus Like mazy and Ethan or mazy and hunter lost their brother and now they're like Being blamed for it too. It's just all so much. They can't even grieve. No And on top of that, they're expected to be like gracious and kind and put together on interviews Are like on you know like in any sort of like public appearance otherwise they're gonna look even more suspicious or whatever Just really rough Bendawit Who wrote for the student newspaper and had known Xana since elementary school Said a lot of people even professional reporters lose their humanity around high profile murder cases because they just think of it as a story Reporters were following students around campus. It was just like terrible behavior. People who were connected in any way to these kids, this case, had to delete social media, quit their jobs, like it got really bad. The universe held a vigil for the four friends. Hunter Chapin was required to go with an FBI escor. And of course, then people started swirling like, oh, you know, and then people started this rumor that there was gonna be a mass shooting at the vigil. And it's like, what are you doing? Yeah, so on November 20th, Moscow police held a second brief press conference during which they explicitly ruled out Bethany Dylan and the man at the food truck as suspects. Said, do not harass these people. They have nothing to do with it. When asked again why they believed the attack was isolated and that no one else was in danger from this murder, the police said they couldn't release any more information and said, quote, to be honest, you're going to have to just trust us on that at this point. Wow. A public autopsy had confirmed that all four victims had been murdered with the same weapon, which appeared to be a large, fixed blade knife. But what the public did not know was that the killer had accidentally left behind the knife sheath next to Maddie in her bed. This was a critical mistake, especially after investigators collected DNA from a button on the sheath and were able to trace the sheath's owner to its source. And that is the end of part one. Ah, it's just horrible. That was really well done, though, for something that is overwhelmingly full of information. Well, thank you. Sergio was a great help to me on that. And I watched-- so there's this documentary on Netflix that's very well known, but it has the body cam footage of them finding everything. And it's very alarming to watch the kids outside and the police being like, what's just being going from like, oh, I'm sure there was just a party here to something really terrible has happened. You even watched them figuring out where the dog's going to go and all this, like, it's unsettling, but yeah. So that's the story. Do we know if the dog barked to be like to protect the owner or just trying to get help because he was locked in a room or-- Oh, the dog barked when the intruder was in the house somewhere. We just don't know what really happened. But the dog was untouched. OK, well, still it's so terrible. Whatever the dog saw, Jesus Christ, I can't imagine. I know. Well, good telling it. I'm excited to hear the part two because I'm ready to find out who actually did this. Oh, god, yeah. Don't check the internet because it's very-- I will not. Very timely. Well, I'm melting to death. You are melting to death. Got it. OK, well, I wish you easy breezes. Thank you. I'm going to try not to look out the window, though, because the man on the roof is still there, and he's still tipping a little bit on his ladder and is giving me some really deep-seated anxiety. If I saw someone working on a microphone, though, and I was standing in-- I would hope they were talking about me, you know what I mean? I feel like-- I would be like-- they're about to broadcast my death. I'd be like, oh, I'm the rest of the world. I'm the rest of the world. I'm the safest all ever, because someone would report it immediately. You're just witnessing this. Yeah. All right, well, I'll see you next week, then. And that's why we drink.
