Dylan Gibbons Earns His Everest Ride with Giga Kick!

Dylan Gibbons is preparing for a landmark opportunity after being confirmed as the rider of Giga Kick in the TAB Everest, the world's richest sprint race. The news followed a standout weekend in which Gibbons won a Group 1 aboard Global Goal for the Pinecliffe team. He received the Everest offer because Giga Kick's regular jockeys remained in Melbourne for the Caulfield Cup, and he was contacted directly by Rocket Douglas. Gibbons welcomed the forecast rain, noting that Giga Kick performs well on soft ground and has previously won and placed second in the Everest. He also reflected on his earlier Everest experience with Buenos Noches, when he was among the first apprentices to ride in the race. Looking back on his Group 1 victory, Gibbons said he felt unusually confident because Global Goal thrives when given clear air, and the small field suited her quirky racing style. He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of racing but credited the Pinecliffe team's patience and faith in him. Ahead of a busy schedule that includes rides at Hawkesbury and Rose Hill, Gibbons expressed gratitude for his recent success and optimism about his upcoming mounts.

Speaker 1This is exciting, he's getting ready for the races, he had a big weekend, Dylan Gibbons on Saturday, getting a group one there in the flight stakes, and now he hears the news that he's riding in the world's richest sprint race, Giga Kick, Dylan Gibbons, good morning mate. Good morning Dave, how are you? Very good, I mean firstly, congratulations on the weekend, you get that horse home for Sarge Global Goal, and what a beautiful filly she is, but now to get news, a couple of days later they're going to be riding Giga Kick in a Tab Everest, that's pretty special.
Speaker 2Yeah it is, goes to show you how cool our game is, obviously winning for the Pinecliffe team, and with Giga Kick getting a slot, I was at the top of their list thankfully, and obviously marked their regular riders, staying in Caulfield to ride in the Caulfield Cup, they were quick to throw me on, so I'm pretty grateful for that.
Speaker 1They've been pretty solid to you too with Global Goal, like they could have easily midway through that prep wanted to change or go a different direction, but they had a lot of faith and ability.
Speaker 2Yeah exactly, we obviously had the plan the whole time along, even after her first start, she was always going to be tipped out and brought back for the Princess Series, and I was just glad that I was a part of them plans, and it can be tricky because obviously the first two times I rode her, I had to sort of do things to set her up to the mile, so I was just glad that they backed that I did the right thing by her, and it was obviously good then to get the job done in the group one.
Speaker 1So to ride Giga Kick in this prospective event. We've got a bit of rain around too Dylan, that must be a little bit of music to your ears, because he does enjoy getting through that ground.
Speaker 2Well yeah exactly, I was hoping there was a bit of rain around just to make the race exciting from a viewer's standpoint, but now I'm in it I hope it absolutely buckets down. He's had obviously the two goes in the Everest for a win in a second, so he's probably not been at his best this time, but they said he jumped out with blinkers on and reacted well in a race that you'd imagine is going to have a bit of speed, so there's a bit of speed, blinkers on. Rain around, he always seems to peak for this race.
Speaker 1Now who phoned you, was it Mr Munns or was it your jockey manager?
Speaker 2No it was Rocket Douglas, he rang me, I was just sitting at home on the computer doing the form for today and he said, you got a ride in the Everest? I said no, he goes, sweet well you're on Giga Kick.
Speaker 1That's sensational, that is brilliant mate, and exactly what you want to hear. You've been involved with the race before, correct me if I'm wrong haven't you?
Speaker 2Yeah I rode Buenos Noches a couple of years ago for me. Zach that year were the first apprentices to ride in the race, so that was pretty cool and things didn't go away that day, but it'd be good to get another crack at it.
Speaker 1You hit the nail on the head I think before with it's a funny old game this, you know if I'd have said to you a month and a half ago or maybe two months, yes you were hoping that you would have seen this filly which achieved you know global goal, a group one, but also too you're quite a realistic bloke, you would have said look, you know, yeah she's going okay, but you don't know what if Chris's or David's going to win. is going and how it's going to land on the day and even with that small field were you were you a little bit nervous leading into it because it wasn't like she was going to get this fast tempo and a drag into the race yeah
Speaker 2i don't like to put the cart before the horse so to speak but um it's quite funny it's probably actually been the opposite probably the most confident i've been because just knowing her sort of back to front from riding her from the start i knew the one thing she had in her favor compared to all them other horses is is that sort of quirky nature where she's a different beast with clear air so once it was sort of a small field it was grand final day i just thought i didn't think there was a lot between them and i just knew i sort of had that ace up my sleeve where with a bit more clear air she's an absolute line chaser so once i was able to give her that clear air and get into the race early i knew she was going to be tough for us later and that she had to be so um yeah it's funny you say that but it was probably probably the most confident i've been going into a group one what about
Speaker 1can these colors continue to be lucky for you today you ride another one for sarge you uh ride a pine cliff runner in race one you've got a ride for the hawks team in race four and richard lit you're riding race six and you got a good little book tomorrow at hawksbury and then well looking at sydney on the weekend uh you've got the likes of mr riz brave one argo wood regimental colors etc what have you done four miles for us so we can maybe steer us into something
Speaker 2yeah i'd say so sarge is one of the first it's bred to be a proper stayer so i'd imagine we'll be back in the second half somewhere but if we can just be motor in the last bit that'll be that'll be it's go but um i think furious he's well placed when you sort of break down the race he's been and he's been in sort of 88s and some high-graded saturday races where now he quickly steps back to a similar distance 72 at the midweek so i thought his last two runs have been good just getting too far back obviously rose hill and tough to make up ground so if he's going to spring back into form they've put him in the right race so um same again he's drawn another tricky gate but hopefully hopefully we can not be too far away and i think you know being back from saturday gray that'll that'll give him a much better
Speaker 1hope well well done mate well done on uh the weekend winning the group one well done on getting an everest ride now on giga kick congratulations and good luck today on the Kenzo and at Hawkesbury and Rose Hill on the weekend, all right?
Speaker 2Appreciate it, Dave.
Speaker 1Thank you. There we go.
