‘Domestic Disturbance’ With Bill Simmons, Chris Ryan, and Sean Fennessey
95m 12s
*Domestic Disturbance* (2001) is a flawed, chaotic entry in the "from hell" film series, representing a decline in quality and originality during the 2000s. While the film suffers from a disjointed plot, poor pacing, and a lack of believable character development—especially in its central conflict between Vince Vaughn and John Travolta’s characters—it remains rewatchable due to its absurd humor and memorable moments, such as the baseball catch scene. Vaughn’s performance, though awkward and misaligned with his comedic roots, shows a genuine attempt at serious acting, while Travolta delivers a heartfelt, authentic portrayal of a struggling father. The film’s production history—cut due to 9/11 and studio pressures, with a real-life bar fight during filming—adds to its lore. Despite its weak ending and clumsy investigation, the movie’s charm lies in its over-the-top absurdity and the sense of a story that never quite coheres. It stands as a cautionary tale of how a franchise can run out of ideas, relying on tired tropes like the evil stepfather and childhood divorce. Still, its mix of humor, deadpan absurdity, and the oddity of its real-world anecdotes makes it a cult favorite among fans of the genre.
The rewatchables is brought to by the Ringer podcast network where you can find the big picture with Sean Fennesy. That's right. CR? Yeah. Not only do you have the watch, but you're doing the beautiful pod on the Adam Friedland show during World Cup. Trap's cool in T.B.P. Okay. We're running this. I think June 22, so hopefully T.M. USA is up to, yeah, just trying to lock out, lock down that one seed in the group. That's right. Good check. Is that what you think will happen? I think they will get through the group somehow. It's encouraging. A prediction from CR. We are still doing from hell month, and we've done really good from hell movies, but we want to do one bad one in domestic disturbance. What happens when everything goes sideways, when everything's in place, it's like a basketball team where it's like, oh, we spent all this money. We have these stars. Dave Nash, Dwight Howard. We can. We can. We can. You're in the lottery. You don't know what happened. And yet, it still ends up being a rewatchables. And that is domestic disturbance, a movie that I implored both of you to watch again. I'm so relieved that this is how you're framing it, because if you were going to come in and be like, this has been one of my favorites for years. Yeah. You know, like, it is, it is very bad, but it is entertaining in an exciting way. For a variety of reasons, but one of which is like, it's got a bunch of guys where you're just like, why did this guy decide to do this movie? So let me ask you this. Do you think it's bad or do you think it's stupid? Because I think there's a little bit of extinction and I think that it's weirdly not bad. Like I think everybody's doing decent stuff. It's good. It's good. It's good. But it's stupid. Well, it's just one of those movies where we're going to talk about this. You can just feel the several dozen minutes that have been carved out of it. And so it just often feels incoherent. It's like red camera. Do you know? It isn't the only movie where I'm like, eh, they could have used 10 more. Yeah. There's definitely references to things where you're like, did that happen? Like, what was going on? It's awesome. It's just, at least you're asking a lot of questions. It's a good bad movie. I think one of the reasons it's rewatchable for me, and I've watched this movie a bunch of times. I've watched it a lot. Cause it's 15 minutes long. Yeah. It's over 88 minutes. It's incredible. It's 79 minutes. Oh, it's amazing. Oh, it's unbelievable. The decisions in the, and like trying to figure out when did Vince Vaughn realized this wasn't going to be the one. Yeah. Chavulta gives up about an hour and Chavulta is really trying for about an hour. And in the last half hours, like, fuck, how many more days is my plane is docked at the airport? There's just dumb characters. It has a lot of the from hell staples, but when we're going to get to that, but the 2000s, this is when from hell starts to go sideways. We have this really good run that starts with fatal, fatal traction into the 80s. Basic instinct kicks in the era that we're doing. We're the good son and that rocks the cradle, singaway, female. We've got breakdown. We have the glory years. And in 2000s, they kind of ran out of ideas, but they realized, let's keep doing this. And that's when you get domestic disturbance. You get changing lanes with Sam Jackson and Ben Affleck, the road rage from hell. Yeah. One hour photo with Robin Williams, serial killer from hell, but like a friendly photo guy. Photo guy. Photo developer guy from hell. The best one of all these from this decade is dysterbia, which I actually think is pretty good. And you can talk me into doing this. Never from hell, yeah, you like that movie great movie. It's a rear window remake. Yeah. Yeah. Shia like right before. I mean, the wheels have been coming off for 20 years, he's disturbing an eagle. I, you know, he's trying. Yeah. It's all right. Transformers, obviously. Yeah. Perfect stranger. Halle Berry and Bruce Willis just kind of came and went really bad. I know where they honestly don't even know if I know that movie. You know where it didn't go from though, to be. How many of these films are on to be any? I think everyone I mentioned is on to be. You're such a real one. You're just like, we're on Netflix. I'm still going to go to there's Netflix caliber. And then we're down here with to be in to be like, here's a thumbnail with Halle Berry and Bruce Willis. Okay. So why did this happen? I think is a good question to ask. There's one more I have, though. Okay. Good. Lake View Terrace 2008. Same Jackson neighbor from hell. It doesn't like the interracial couple that move next door. It could be the last. It could be the last from hell. And then dark night comes along and cleans up hell, you know? That's right. That's right, Joker from hell. But so you can kind of understand why these movies start to pop, right? You can be like, well, there's like the AIDS crisis and movies like single white female and this idea of like some foreign presence coming in and changing your life. Or you can say that there's like class anxiety and the yuppie moment in the eight or late eighties that is kind of driving some of this. But then as it goes on, is it just that the ideas get squeezed out and there's not any good ones? Like, this is a stepfather from hell movie. Which by the way, we'd already done with the stepfather with Terry Quinn. That's what I was going to say. It's part of the music. You're just redoing the same kind of themes that we've already seen in other movies. I think the reason they kept, there's two reasons they kept going. I think it's fun as an audience member to watch. People make dumb decisions where you're just like, how do you not realize? Why aren't you listening to your son? Yeah. That's just fun as an audience member. And then the other thing is I think people saw like what happened for Michael Keaton with pacific heights and like going close and fiddle attraction, like to zag the other way with a from hell character is like a good career move. For a star, yeah. Jennifer Jason Lee. Sure. So like, you can see like Vince Vaughn thinking, yeah, it's been five years since swingers. I got to take a couple of swing. Maybe I'll play like the evil stepfather guy. This would be good for me. And then he probably realizes what, 10 minutes in. Fuck. Yeah, but then you turn out to be Patrick Bergen and sleeping with the enemy and then you're like, never heard from again. Yeah. That's the other issue with this is sometimes you, if you're not a star, if you're a star, I think you can move in and out of one of these roles. And he was at this critical, I don't know if you want to talk about Vaughn now, but he's at a really, really critical juncture of his career where six years have gone by since the thing that made him a big star. And he clearly had ambitions to be a serious actor. That was what he wanted to do. He wanted to do dramas. Like do thrillers, look at every single movie he chooses after I have a swingers swingers lost world Jurassic, he's like the fifth guy in that clay pigeon psycho, the cell domestic disturbance and made those are all thrillers. And then made is the made is the like the favor come at his reunion of favor, but if you watch that movie, it's just as much a crime movie as it is a funny buddy comedy. Yeah. And you can see like what he thought he was going to do and then after this movie and after this movie, what did he make in 2002? To that is a dodge ball. Nothing. Oh, he does disturbance and made the oh one nothing in '02, '03 is old school and the light bulb goes on. Oh, this is what I am. I'm actually like comedy events on star ski and it's comedy leading man and he's like nine in a row. Yeah. And then he goes back to the top. I mean, he, you know, he ends up being in the breakup and stuff like that where he's headlining huge movies. In '05, when the in the breakups, pretty flawed movie, but he's also dating Aniston, post-brad pit. Like, he's an eight plus Lister comedy show that he was like touring. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He was an eight plus Lister. In '01, it felt like his career was going to end soon. Yeah. And it was like, man, I feel bad for double down Trent. I don't know if this is going to happen for him, but he kind of figured out how to flip it and use that stick thing as like his comedy persona and then he was off. It's really funny though, because there's something in the character of this movie that reminds me a lot of Trent, where like Trent is always performing. He's always doing his bit. He's always trying to pump up Mikey. He's always, you know, he's always got this like false energy, this bravado. And he's kind of doing that in the first half of this movie where he's trying to connect with Dan. He's having a catch with him when he's just like, hey, I want to build me some boats. Like he has it. He's often talked about in relationship to comedies how often he will sign up for a project and then the studio starts talking about how it needs to be PG-13. And you know, he had grown up and it's like all the movies that we love when we were growing up, there was something a little bit elicit about them. And I think I can't remember if he was talking about the internship or whatever, but it was something where you can actually see the roots of that problem in this movie, because there's an R-rated kind of just more disturbing version of domestic disturbance that actually could be kind of fucked up and interesting, but they'd just shave down the edges too much and they sand it down and they make it into a PG-13 movie that never really bothers any
buddy, you know, but it's like you can see how screwed up his relationship with Danny could have been and how weird it is. And him being just like, it's a bad dream, you know, like I have a lot of ideas for this later. I think that version of this. I just think PG 13 is a death sentence. Do we think that they shot them and cut them out? I do. There's an 111 minute version of this movie that doesn't exist basically. Yeah, they cut. There's a whole story behind it where I have it. It was supposed to be like end of 2001. 9/11 happens. Paramount has to rush Zoolander up because Ed Burns has sidewalks in New York. It's their big September movie and they can't do it because it's New York. They move Zoolander up. I saw Zoolander in the theater in Boston. Maybe two weeks after 9/11 and people just weren't ready for a comedy. It was a weird vibe, yeah, even the movies beloved now. So they push this movie up to like October and they decided it needs to be shorter and they just chopped 22 minutes from it. Now, the counter would be, could this movie have had 22 more minutes? But the thing they did, they did that and they did the PG 13 thing. And you can see like there's a lot of times they're saying fuck, but they're changing it to don't fool with me, Chris. Yeah. Who says don't fool with me? Well, the weird thing is that he goes, you're a fucking liar, Danny. Yeah. They allowed that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. When you, so you only know Vince Vaughn from the comedy Vince Vaughn. So when you see him like trying to think he, this was a career path for him, is it like amusing? Certainly amusing. I think when he's doing a lot of like, when he's playing baseball, he is kind of comedy Vince Vaughn in this movie. Like when he's like, I don't want to catch it up here. I want to catch it over here. I want to catch it down here. Yeah. What I actually think that I don't think in a vacuum. That's a good athlete. Why is he so dirty? I think you vacuum Vince Vaughn's not bad in this movie as like a villain. I think he's, if this movie were made right and there was 15 more minutes in it, I don't think he's bad. He's not the problem in the psychoreamake or clay pigeons or the cell. Like it's not that he's a bad actor. It actually is just that he's not exploiting what he's so amazing at. He's like aggro Chevy Chase. That's his persona. He's like fast talking smarter than nobody else in the room, kind of a dickhead, but very lovable. That's his comic persona. It's an amazing persona. In old school, that's some of the funniest shit you're ever going to see in a movie in the 2000s. But you can feel him like really trying to broaden his horizons to try to be a much more serious kind of performer. And like, it's just not what he's best at. And like you can, you can feel the acceptance in the late 2000s of him just being like, you know what, this just makes more sense for him. He basically does that until true detective season two, right? Like when he, and now he's kind of pivoted back where he's doing, you know, cell block 99 and and and drive it across concrete. And he's trying to go back to the like hard edge thriller stuff that he really likes in his career, which I respect. Sure, but it wasn't going to make him a star. You can also prop your career up in different ways. So like, he is big thing now is this show on Apple called Bad Monkey, which I personally don't love the show, but it is a perfect Vince Vaughan vehicle because it's like Vince Vaughan walking around Florida, solve the crimes, but making jokes, right? You know. Yeah, usually the people hit as a comedian to have like seven, eight years. And then they decide, I want to, I could be a dramatic actor too. Vince Vaughan like inverted it. Yeah. He had swingers. And he's like, I take me seriously. And then people are like, you're double down Trent. What's going on here? And then he flipped it the other way. So I don't know if you look at his O3 through 2010, him and Farrell are like the, they're at the head of all that shit with Apatau. They're in the most movies. They're in the, they're making cameos and other people stuff. And I just, I don't think he want to accept that. I think when you look at Vaughan and Favreau from Swinger, we talked about this when we did rewatchables, thinking of like the potential of those guys in that movie. And then thinking how their careers turned out, it's actually kind of incredible. Because even when, when, when they made Bade in 2001, which I saw was disappointing. Yep. I liked those guys. I felt like I had to see it. But it felt like it was like kind of over. Not aging well with the amount of Diddy going on in that film. Well, true, true. But, when you look at it now, like Favreau is one of the most successful directors who had less 20 years and Bond was one of the most successful comedy actors. So it somehow worked out great for them. It was such a weird thing with Swinger as I wonder whether or not Vince Vaughan coming out of that movie was like the thing that people will love is me playing video games, you know, and being like, like I'm going to make your guy believe it or whatever. Who's the big winner? Mikey wins. He probably thought it would be some of the more dramatic beats or some of the more like classic movie star beats. If that movie got seen at all. But that's in the text of the movie. Like those guys are trying to be actors in Hollywood. They're trying to be Paul Newman. Like that's the whole point of the movie. People they dreamed of being. But the stuff that is the most fun is when they're just hanging out being friends and almost feels like they're improvising those scenes where they're at the diner or they're playing, you know, NHL. Like that stuff just felt like they're real personalities and that's what people wanted from them. But you're right though. Like if they had 100 tries at their career, are they in the 99th percentile of how well it worked out? It's crazy. The other thing is he never figured out like there was like you talked about aggro Chubby Chase. That actually would have worked really well for this movie. Like if he had been this like wheeler dealer, like charismatic guy and everybody in the town loved him. But like John Travolta and Danny, the little boy were like they were the only ones that knew he was full of shit. But we didn't really see the charismatic side of him either in this. Only in like the baseball catch scene. And he gets that chamber of commerce. But for the most part, he's kind of playing it straight and and sinister. And it's a lot of a lot of shots of him. You're brushing your teeth. And it's like, oh, damn, Vince is in the bear. They use his height. Like they do some things about him that really work. But yeah, like the things that work the best in this movie are the two scenes with him in Bishemi. Because yeah, that's that should have been. It's a suggestion of a whole other universe of a whole other world. They seem so comfortable together. Bishemi grounds this movie and makes it feel like it's part of like a larger world. And yeah, then the stuff with both Terry Polo and the kid is just kind of like this. This feels like I'm looking at a picture that takes place in a frame so that I buy the frame. It's like a department store. Yeah, I wrote down this movie's trying to be evil stepfather movie. It's basically an ABC after school special of like the first dad trying to keep his relationship with his son. It's a murder mystery to boy the crowd wolf. The boy the crowd wolf nobody believes me movie. It's a childhood divorce movie. And it's a little bit of a police procedural with one of the worst investigations of all time. Yeah, we checked out the incinerator. Nothing there. Did you check his car? Yeah, I couldn't find anything. Like really he was stabbed to death. Are there any scenarios that incinerate bones? Like do we know that that exists? Yeah, there's a couple still in LA. Yeah. Yeah. But it's like it's a brick works. Do they have why would you need to like an industry? It's always on the incinerator. It's just cooking 24/7. It's like a pizza of it. It's just on. I would love to get a picture of bricks hold these because it's like I just bought a hotel and I have a brick works. Like he's just like long drinking all this money. Chamber of Commerce is like say no more. There's your word. The unintentional comedy in this movie is at a control. Terry Paulo is the mom one of the this is a staple in these movies. The dumb wife for the dumb mom who just doesn't see all the signs and then there's like the oh moment. Yeah, which she has when she sees it's on trading his burns. Yeah, but we have that. We have all the times they try to do sinister vents from like the door closes and he's behind it or he's in the mirror. And then for me, Travolta in this movie it's a 10 out of 10. He's pouring his soul into this movie. The first hour he is working so hard. And he's really likeable. He loves movies. He really is. He really is likeable. It's just like man. This guy's just a great first dad. He's just a great role model. Yeah, she wants to make some wooden boats. Doesn't even care if he makes money on him. I actually think he's just like doing the exact wrong thing for the movie. The movie makes a lot more sense if he's like kind of a schizzy alcoholic. Yeah, a bit bitter. And like a little more mad. But he's having these conversations with his girlfriend. And he's just like, gee, Willikers, if only my boy can truly be happy. She's giving literally zero in those scenes. The girlfriend. It's like plays like when Yee was working out against a chair. No, but the actress, but it's just like it's John Travolta and like the NPC of actresses. Yeah, it's tough. They definitely saved some money on that one. Yeah, he's really gone for it. And he really just wants to have a good relationship with his son. The one moment in this movie that crystallizes that is when he goes up to the house because it's his day. And she's just like, yeah, sorry, he's not here. And he's like, okay. He walks away. And like what was the dramatic tension in the scene? Zero. There's so many scenes like that where you're like, why did they think this was the best version of the scene? Like they go boating. Terry Pollo asked him. Yeah. Hey, can you take them? Maybe take them for the boating. Guys can I really want my son to like him. It's like, all right, I'll do it. They go boating. And the scenes like
40 seconds. It's like they could have had any sort of character development or some sort of them trying to feel each other out. Nothing. They just kind of bring the boat back in. There's a very funny moment where Vaughn and Danny are, you know, at the wheel of the ship, the wheel of the boat. And he's trying to explain Starbird to him and all the lingo. And Vaughn's like, "Yeah, let's just stick with left and right." Ticket. Like his general tone is just like he's in wedding crashers, in domestic disturbance. It's really funny. The baseball catch scene is probably my favorite scene in the movie. It's the most rewatchable scene for sure. But it needed like four more scenes like that. Yeah, I agree. It's basically, Danny doesn't get along with them. The only reason we really can think of is because they had that baseball catch. Like collection of things, coming of age, things they could have done together. Like Rick shows Danny how to drive. Rick gives Danny his first beer. Oh yeah, he teaches about a spoke. It would have been a lot better. I mean, the movie is really weird because the kid who plays Danny is kind of like likeable and normal, but they're treating him like he's like the town hoodlum, you know? He's normal. He's kind of horrible at that concept. That's the other thing that I think is cut out. It's like Danny's past lies. Yeah. Because the cop seems to fucking hate you. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm like, what did he do to you? He's like, this fucking kid did it again. I'm not wasting it. I'm like, yeah, did he call in like a fake bomb threat? Like what happened? He just seems like a mischievous teenager and not evil. They're like, oh my god, he threw a baseball through a window. Like what kid didn't do that? Well, he does have a stowaway fetish. That's true, which comes up, which finally manifests itself, been way through the movie. So Travolta, this is one of the things I love about this movie is it's the end of Vaughn kind of thinking he could be this as an actor. It's the end of Travolta. This is really is. Yeah. He's on a heater from Pulp Fiction 94 through 2000 where he makes basically three to four movies a year that are major movies. Pulp get shorty, broken arrow, Michael, phenomenon. She's so lovely, face off, Mad City, primary colors, thin red line, general's daughter. And that's all in like five years. And then battlefield earth happens in 2000. This is the sort of backwash of battlefield earth. Battle fit earth. People are like, this is how fish before back battlefield had come out. Is that true? No, I don't know of like technically, but it's like it would make sense that swordfish and domestic disturbance were like the last two like, this guy seems normal. Well, he did lucky numbers after that too. Okay. So battlefield earth is like the, but that's the tipping point. I would say general, it starts with general's daughter, which is also not good. I would say general's daughter is an awful, awful movie general's daughter. It's like just like a 10 minute rape scene. Yes, no it's fucking awful. I hate that movie. General's daughter, this movie swordfish and basic is an all time bad run. And some of it is like he picked the wrong movies. Some of it is he's trying to like pivot his persona, literally movie to movie where he's like in battlefield earth, that'll be more like you know, the villainous figure. But that was a Scientology movie. Totally. Yeah. But he's in this movie, you can almost feel him reacting like Chris is saying. He's like, I'll be a warm dad. I'll be I'll be the hero in this movie. But him being a hero actually makes the story not very dramatically interesting. Like very early on in the movie, it's like, well, Vince Vaughn is clearly evil. As soon as Steve Bushemi shows up, you're like, okay, well, Vince Vaughn is a criminal and we're just waiting now to find out what happens. The movie doesn't really push you along the sense of like, well, is it actually Travolta who's like an alcoholic and his son who's like kind of a degenerate teenager? I mean, why does it break up? What happened in their marriage? Because he turns down like champagne in that first, when he's given the guy the boat in the beginning, the movie, and he's like, no, no, no, I won't do champagne. I'm going to have a beer. And I was like, oh, it's because like, maybe he's only on beer. He's not a lot to have anything else. But they never touch on it again. He seems like a lovely guy. So it's unclear why Terry Polo would divorce this like totally nice boatmaker. And the girlfriend leaves him too. And she's like, yeah, I've had enough for this. It's like, why? What do you do? He seems like a great guy. She's trying to make some wooden boats. Yeah. And he's pretty involved in his son. He cares about his son. That's your issue. Fuck face. He still has like in the 2000s, he still does like one out of every five or six pops. Like, it's be cool. Happens. And then what's the other one? He's good in taking a poem. One, two, three, the real guy like that. Like he, he became self-parity as chef in 2000. I think you hit that zone as an actor where the general public's going. What's going on with this guy? And he's taking a lot of paycheck movies. Well, this is when Red Box movies also come in, right? Like it's, yeah, I mean, he, his, I wanted to ask you guys a question about him, but I, he was just a can when I was a can. And because he had the craziest, the directorial debut, which is like a 62 minute movie about the first time he ever flew on a plane. Like it's just a weirdest. It's on Apple. Yeah. It's called one way. So everybody is like, this is true cinema. Is that like a bit? It's a bit. Yeah. But he was like, he wore a beret to every single screening of the film. He's got a weird mustache go T situation. And everybody was like, why are you wearing this brain? He's like, well, I looked back at photos of old directors and they were all wearing berets. So I thought I too will wear a brain become a director. Like he's an eccentric guy to say that makes it nice. Yeah. He's a weird guy. But has, has there ever been an actor who's made more incredible culture changing movies, who's also made more bottom of the barrel dog shit than John Trevolta. Like he has the widest chasm from Pulp Fiction, Saturday Night Fever, Greece, like movies that change people's lives. Yeah. To whatever the last 15 years of his career has been, where he's in like, stuff like Gotti, which gets roundly destroyed. Or, you know, dark vengeance, like a movie you never heard of and never seen that is a red box. But now he's in the movies. Like my dad would mistakenly order our name is on because it's like, Travolta and Bruce Willis are in it. And it's like from the last five years. And they're both in 42 seconds of the movie. Yeah. I think part of the problem with him when you when your aspiration becomes to have your own private plane that you can fly around. Yeah. You just start taking paycheck movies. Yeah. And I think this happens to him because that there's in the research of it. It's like Travolta flew his plane and he landed in Wilmington, North Carolina and everybody loved him. And he still parks his plane there sometimes. I think I think for him is like, I'll do five a year. How much can I make enough to buy this Sesta? Gas is expensive now, you know, it is. It is. It is. It's a really weird career though. It's the weirdest. He because I go all the way back to him when he was welcome back Carter, when he was Barbarino. And then I'll send him a Saturday night fever. And he was the single biggest movie star we had. But then this comeback was like, people loved Travolta in the 90s. Like they did. Like I went to all those movies that list that I probably saw every one of them in the theater. Yeah, including General's daughter, which I would like movies that were big hits at that time. They don't hold like phenomenon and Michael. Those movies don't really hold up as well. Like they were really cool pitches where it was like, what if he has like a six-cent style power? What if he's an angel? Like they seemed interesting. But those movies don't really have like a cultural shelf life. But pulp and get shorty for sure do. And the 70s movies still hold up. But it's a really face-off face-off. Face-off. Yeah, I enjoy Broken Arrow. I like Broken Arrow. You should watch out Phenomenon with Craig with our Liz. Watch it with your twin Craig. Watch it with Liz. It's an emotional one. Okay. It's got, I remember there was one sequence where in Phenomenon with Kira Sedrick because he's dying. And he's like, "Will you love me for the rest of my life?" And she goes, "I'm going to love you for the rest of my life." Is that your attempt at doing Kira Sedrick's mouth? Yeah. I'm going to love you for the rest of my life. That's one of those movies. My wife loves that movie. Not a great one. Not a great one. Nora Efron. Which one is he an angel in? That's Michael. Michael. And then in powder. Is he in powder? No, he's not in powder. He's not in powder. This could be a great quiz show where just it's like you try to guess the Travolta movie and what party plays. Terry Polo, brief run here for her coming off me at the parents. Big role for her. Probably excited when she got it. You're going to be a movie of John Travolta and Vince Vaughan. They're going to be fighting over you. Yeah. Yeah. She's just like a slice of American cheese. You're just like, "That was fine." She's not done any favors by this script. I don't know what she could have done with it, but yeah. It's kind of hard to judge in general any performance or character because you're like, "Well, what's not in the movie? What are we missing here?" Maddo Larry was the kid. He's actually good. He's screenplayed by Harold Koven. It's probably still mad about all the stuff they cut. Then Harold Becker directed this movie. Wait, isn't this screenplay by Lewis Koellik? I wrote Harold Koven down. This might be Lewis Koellik. I think it's Lewis Koellik. Okay. He wrote a couple of movies like this. I do. I do. So he's one of the weird director careers we've had. First big movie, he directs. He's 57 years old, the onion field. He does taps and vision quest. Big town. The boost. You like the boost. Sean loves the boost. Do you like the boost? The boost. I just love for the first time this year. It's amazing. Yeah. See of love, which we've done on the rewatchables. Yeah. Malice, which we will do on the rewatchables. See vision quest we've done. See of love we've done. Malice will happen. I just want to say one of my takes is that Harold Becker now has the same number of movies on the rewatchables to Stanley Kubrick. That's what your takes. Just a fact. I don't know what category I put that in, but I put it in one of the categories. City Hall. Yeah. I love City Hall. You're a big city. You're the only one I know who likes City Hall. Oh, I love it. I don't
- I don't remember Mercury Ries. - I'm at least mingling. (laughing) - I always, this isn't what he says, but I always hear him say, "I'm coming in again." (laughing) - Mercury Rising 98, what was that movie? - Willis. - Yeah, that's a thriller with Bruce Willis. That's the movie very before this. - It might have been the only movie I didn't see in 1998. (laughing) And then domestic disturbance '01, never does another movie. - Yeah. - Well, he was 57 when he started. - Calls it a career for that. 75 million dollar budget made 54 million. - Yeah. - How did this movie cause 75 million dollars? (laughing) - Honestly. - It builds on those boats. - Well, what did they spend this money on? - Honestly, Travolta probably got like 15 and 20 million for that. - Did he? - Probably. - Yeah, probably. - He's a huge star in 2000. - Yeah. - That said, if this movie caused 75 million today, it would be outrageous. - Yeah. - In 2001. - I think part of the reason is there was an incident that we'll mention, hey, let's mention it now. This movie became famous 'cause there was, this is the Steven Seagal shooting on himself a word for most unbelievable anecdote from the actual film shoot, a huge fight in an April 2001 in Wilmington, North Carolina, a bar fight with Vince Vaughan, Steve Buschemi, and the screenwriter Scott Rosenberg, who was there. - Do we assume that Scott Rosenberg was there 'cause he was on set rewriting? - Rewriting, yeah. - He's rewritten a lot of movies over the years. They get bombed at this bar by recording the accounts, get into it with the locals, somehow they end up going outside for some sort of fight. - Well, there was a report that some guy's girlfriend starts talking about, believable. - Yeah. - I buy that. - Yeah. - There's some sort of fight, a local man gets in a fight with Buschemi and slashes him with a knife, slashes his face, and everyone goes to jail, stab them, cool thing. And if you watch the movie, they have to hide Buschemi's face in a couple scenes. When you go to see him in the hotel room, the whole side of the hotel room is dark for some reason. - It's a completely different lighting scheme than the rest of the movie. - It's actually pretty cool. - And if this movie became famous for that, for this huge fight, there was a trial, all kinds of shit. - Yeah, it's the most well-known thing about the movie. It's a weird one. I was wondering how you guys felt about this. If you're a big movie star, are you going to the local dive bar? - I don't think any more. - I think this kinda ended that kind of stuff. - You done the cell phone era. - Yeah. - Yeah, this is like the tail end of that era. - That's what I was thinking for sort of like, what's aged the worst or best? Like just participating in the social culture of a town while making a movie. - Can you still hear stories about like, I know of like a TV show where it's like, the guy from the TV show, like just did very well for himself at bars around the city that they shot in. You know, like that kind of thing still can happen. - John Hamm? - No. (laughing) - But yeah, when it's like a big movie star now, I don't think like Vince Vaughan and Steve Buschemi, whatever that is now would be like, Austin Butler and Timothy Shalamet could not go to like a bar in New Orleans. - That's exactly what I'm thinking. - Without like a bunch of securities. - And I guess like the Shalamet buffs do do that, and then you see what happens. - Yeah. - Counter. - How much fun would it be to go out with Vince Vaughan and Steve Buschemi in 2001? - Yeah. - I'm going. - Yeah. - Steve Buschemi's like, hey, can you, can you do it, Buschemi? - My god, I wasn't planning on it. - It is. Why don't we get after it tonight? - I can't do it. - Yeah, but they, they go out and they get after it and the whole thing. I remember I was in Boston. - The whole thing is they get stabbed. - Well, sadly, then that kept going. I remember when they were filming the town in '09, Hamm was in Boston and I was there for my book tour. And I was out in my buddy J. Bug and Hamm came out and met us with Rebecca Hall, the lady from the movie. - Oh yeah. - And we had drinks. And the J. Bug was, we were in a discrete part in Boston and the J. Bug was just like, this is the Mad Men. This is fucking crazy, it's the guy from Mad Men. He's come out of my TV. So I can imagine like in Wilmington, North Carolina with all these people that the celebrities aren't there that much and they just see the guy from Swinger's and they're sitting on somebody's girlfriend. I feel quick about this story because if you read about it, it does sound like this guy's girlfriend started hitting on Vince Vaughan. The guy lost his mind about it. But it sounds like Bouchemi got Vince Vaughan's back and Vince Vaughan got Bouchemi's back. Like it does sound like two guys who are like, I'm not fucking back and down. - Yeah, right, sure. - I love it. Was this like Kite Fitzgerald's wedding was like this? - Bar fight down with the locals, like coming at you guys at all or no, like is that Danny Kelly? Hey motherfucker. I heard what you said about the chargers. (laughing) - Was there a lot of NFL media? Hyphids is wedding? - No. - So Daniel Jeremiah wasn't getting in the mix. (laughing) - I got in a knife fight with Daniel Jeremiah? - The sticks. - That would be amazing. - I was incredible with the blade. - Hyphids would back you up in a bar fight. I would want him on my side. - Hyphids, yeah. - Yeah, for sure. - I played basketball with him. - He'd be down in there. - Hyphids getting us into a bar fight. - Hyphids is the problem. - Yeah. - Well, we're gonna have a ringer awards at the end of this year and one of the awards is a ringer character of the year. And Hyphids and Raheem Palmer are now in the finals for working out after the next game in Sweden at five in the morning, going immediately to a gym and getting a lift in. - Well, I don't know if anyone's stopping that. - I don't know if anyone's stopping that. - We'll be doing this award. We'll be giving an accident. - Yeah, we'll be giving an accident. - We're gonna host the award show. - And Van's gonna be upset that he wasn't nominated for more awards. He's like, "What else do I need to do?" (laughing) Roger Ebert for this movie, one and a half stars. (laughing) So we've got it. Last week. I liked it more than Goodson. - Last week Goodson was a half star. When we recorded that, you haven't heard that yet. This was one and a half. He wrote, "The movie is a paid holiday for its director, Harold Becker." (laughing) I say this because I know what Becker is capable of. He's so disappointed. - Yeah. - Tough one. And then he said, "The final confrontation. So badly choreographed that I was not the least bit surprise when the studio called to say the Chicago critics had quote, "Seen the wrong last real. Would we like to see the correct real on Monday?" I agreed eagerly expecting a revised footage. But no, the only problem was the earlier real was lacking the final music mix. So he must have been fucking furious. - Yeah, as you go see this movie, fucking like quote in a half weeks. - Twice in a week. Imagine watching this twice in 72 hours. - I would have been fucking pissed from hell. All right, we're gonna take a break and then do most rewatchable or unwatchable scene. All right, most rewatchable scene. - I like when Rick goes boating with the boys. - Definitely. - And they're establishing Frank's. Just, he's just a great first dad. - Have you guys ever believed someone less than when Vince Vaughn says, "I'm not trying to be his dad, but I would like to be his friend." (laughing) - I can't hear him say a single thing you take seriously. - Yeah. (laughing) - I can only hear the rival newscaster from Ankerman that he plays, you know, Vince Manthew? - Yeah. - Don't you, Manthew, this is insane. (laughing) He's just doing that performance in this movie. - Well, as a childhood divorce, I do love the first dad's second dad dynamic, right? - Can we talk about this choice in this scene? - Yeah. - 'Cause obviously, Travolta's character is not thrilled about the idea of taking his son's stepfather on a three-man boat tour. - Yeah. - Is there any situation in which you and either your mom or your dad and your step-parent would have an experience like that? Because that would be very unlikely for me as a child of divorce. - Yeah, so as I've, we've talked about divorce in the past, my situation was a little unusual 'cause my parents would get together for my, but they were pretty friendly. - Okay. - With that said, my dad and my step-dad and myself never would have gone out and done anything. - You guys never do a socks game. - Yeah, there's some sort of a line that I think. - There's a missing element to this scene where it's like, Travolta should have been taking some rough waves and bouncing him around a little bit and just be like, "What, I don't know. "I mean, it's just, "it's choppy out here today." - Right. - Or the other thing. 'Cause what this, I mean, this movie misses so many things that would have been good. We almost needed a creative committee. But ultimately, you're the first dad and this new guy comes in. He's a swing and dick. He's taller than you. Like, he's younger than you. He's more successful than you. Like, there's places that could go. Where Travolta, even on the boat, like, they should have made Vince Vaughn. Like, oh, this guy's actually amazing on boats and Travolta's doing something wrong. And so let me step in here. - Yeah. - Travolta and he's just better at him. - You did the right, yeah. - Yeah, yeah. And it's just, they didn't hit that for some reason. - I think part of the issue is that Rick Jack, just the Vaughn character. - Rick Jack. - I just don't yet, I don't get anything about him. Like, I don't understand who he really is in any way. - What were his investments? - The movie doesn't explain like, the crimes that he did, where he comes from. Is he like a scumbag? Is he a guy who got caught up in a problematic situation? And then it drove him crazy to made him violent. - I think he was racketeering, he was a racketeering charge. - But he skated, took all the money. These guys did time and then Ray gets out. - These guys did time, but somehow didn't blow the whistle on him. And he was able to escape, 'cause this is early internet. You could just change your name, right? - Yeah, and just like, is he malevolent, or is he like forced to become more and more evil? Like it's a little, it's just all of that stuff. - Or maybe not evil at all. He just needed to get rid of Boshemi, 'cause they make this like, he's murder. It's like, well, we only see, it's not murder one person. - Yeah, but then he's got his forearm braced against a 14 year old in a bedroom. - Yeah, maybe this guy's kind of a psycho dream. - Yeah, that's the thing. They needed like two more murders.
with him. Yeah, yeah, he needed also to kill the prostitute and yeah, you know, we needed to ramp it up the motel manager, the motel manager should have done the wedding. The moment Buscemi shows up is great. It takes off so good. I'm giving him the Todd Parker award for best character entrance. No, a very hysterical one moment where he's like, thanks for dressing up. It feels so improv too. And Chivalta is like, Chivalta who's both the dumbest guy in the world, but is also like incredibly astute, like immediately sniffs out like, huh, this guy, what's going on here? Yeah, goes to talk to him. I could have spent more time at the wedding. Honestly, I would love to have seen the best man speech. It's another missed opportunity. He should ask Danny to be the best man. And Danny could have given like a super awkward best man speech, say, like, I just, this stuff isn't hard. Scott Rosenberg, what are you doing on set getting in barfights? Yeah, it's true. He was traumatized. The baseball catch scene, the Vince when the Mitch Kramer award for Worst Athletic, he does. It is really disappointing. Why is he throwing it like this? Because he's not bad at wedding crashers playing football. Yeah, he's pretty good. Yeah. I mean, he's a big guy. He looks like an athlete. I think maybe he made Jamie a hair and rude it. He was taken like a bunch of miles per hour off because he didn't want to hurt the kid. The release point is real weird. Yeah, I wonder why it's really odd. I don't know if I should put five guy having catch with a 12 year old. Do you like you have to like adjust your phone? Look at you. You got back. You got Westman tooth's back. No, there's two options. One is the same. Jack is Jack. Rick Barnes. Do you think they were just like, I love UT? Rick Barnes. He hasn't got far in the tournament, but man, he always qualifies. Well, there's two choices here because I find it hard to believe Vince Vaughn can't throw a baseball. One is that he threw his arm out in the baseball catch scene and like had a sore arm and you have a sore arm, you got to start throwing sideways. Okay. The other is bar fight. Maybe it was had a fucked up shoulder bar. Maybe it could be. I love to ask him. Maybe the first question that you've been spun ever came on the pod and be like, Hey, thanks for coming out. It's the best thing to serve. It's what happened with the throwing something's up because you definitely has a better throwing motion. It's it's when they start doing the side that either means they have a torn rotator cuff or they don't know how to throw a baseball. I'll tell you what, the performance in the scene is riveting. It's like the best scene in the movie. I could have watched five more minutes, but then Danny just whips the ball through the window. It's like, is Danny a psycho? What was that? No, I mean, Vince Vaughn was just basically like clean, clean the shit up. I'm not playing anymore. He throws his glove out of him. Yeah. Both both gloves. By the way, this was awesome. Have you guys got enough of this movie? This scene is great. Both gloves look like they were purchased that day. Like there is just no wear on either. Oh, yeah. It was not broken in yet. Dad such a good athlete. Why didn't teach you had throw a ball, Danny? Who's your dad's kilo-neil? Go over here. I'm going over there. He's just doing Vince Vaughn the only time in the movie where he's really cooking like that. I wish he had done five more scenes like that. They're making him dinner. He's like, I don't know. I thought a cheeseburger was supposed to be red. Yeah. Chivalta runs into Boshemi at the coffee shop, unbelievable into Vaughn going to see Boshemi and I forget who he says this too, but I wrote it down when Boshemi says, you know what I'm noticing? Haven't seen any adult bookstores around here. He said it's a trouble. What is that? He's basically doing his Fargo character. No kid. I kid you not. I kid you not. Yeah. He definitely probably got overpaid to be in this movie. Sure. He's still hot off Fargo. I think he fucking paid for it though. Yeah. He's definitely getting his stuff back. But he honestly brings the absolute best of Boshemi. Well, that leads me to the next, my next favorite scene, which is Ray watching hoops with all of them. And he's just like, when he finds out he's going to get paid, he just slaps her ass. And then he fucking turns on the DePaul game and he's like, what did I miss? Which like, it was off. How would she know? When he's expecting her to catch him up on what happened in the game. She's like, Stephen Hunter just added three and eight. Oh, man. This section of the movie, it's awesome. It's awesome. Danny stinks into the car. Boshemi gets stabbed. Is this screwdriver? Ice pick. Ice pick. Yeah. Wow. The rare non-blood stabbing. Yeah. Through the leather jacket must have absorbed a lot of the blood. And then all of a sudden, we have an incinerator because the South Port Brick works has just an awesome scenario that's going around. The death is staged well. Boshemi sees the kid and gets stabbed in the way it's shot. It's not bad. I agree. Yeah. There are moments in the movie where you can feel like a lot of real crafts people, very similar to the composition about the good sun where you're like a lot of overqualified like 55-year-old yeoman Hollywood people making this movie. Yeah. But the editing is where you can feel like getting diced up. But that sequence is cool. Basically, the movie is kind of working. I would say all the way up to the murder. Yeah. And then as soon as the investigation starts, you start to be like, what the fuck? Yeah. That's where you really feel like a cop's come in. Basically, you're just like, oh, this is stupid now. So there's a DVD with deleted scenes. And I didn't realize that to the yesterday. I was going to like speed order it and we're going to get into Wednesday. So then my wife was at the Grove yesterday. I'm like, true story. I was like, hey, can you go to the Barnes and Noble and go to the DVD section and get me domestic disturbance. So I was like, it's domestic disturbance 2001 with John Travolta. And she texted me and she said they don't have it. Well, I'm happy to share with you after the fact that I own it on Blu-ray. And did you watch it? I watched the commentary with Harold Becker, which was apparently terrible is a disaster. It's frequently like, wait, did you do this? Did you watch the nicks? Then domestic disturbance. No, I watched the nicks. Excuse me. I watched domestic disturbance in the afternoon watch the nicks game. Then went downstairs, put on the domestic disturbance commentary and started doing notes for the pod. And I'm like, listening to it while I'm taking notes. And this is Harold Becker's performance. He's like, oh, yeah, here we see these beautiful boats down in Wilmington. I'm really proud of this. I really like these, these credits that we made with this film. You know, great credit maker. His name is Michael Hoguearth. He's a wonderful guy. And oh, yeah, here we see John Travolta. Interesting scene here. Like what? Just completely has no idea that his movie is a fiasco. Like has no idea that there's been like a bar fight. Like there's no acknowledgement of any of that stuff. It's one of those commentaries, too, where like long stretches of the commentary are just scenes from the movie with no one talking over it. So it's like he recorded like 48 minutes of content on a 79 minute movie. Very bad. I went and found the DVD where they have those like big reviews where they even review like the dueted scenes and stuff because I really wanted to find out what was in the dueted scenes. Like this was an hour and a half of my day yesterday. It's like, I got to find out what they cut out. I couldn't find it out. But somebody reviewed this and they said the same thing about Becker was like the commentary is bad. There's long stretches where Harold doesn't say anything. Yes. And then the dueted scenes I guess were probably dueted for a reason for the most part. But it's weird to never know. I mean, like you listed his movies, like he's made some really good movies. His movies, you know, Onion Field is a legitimately great movie. Yeah. Um, I like really like the black marble one of his first movies. He's made some really cool stuff over the years. Vision Quest. What a watchable. Top 12. I mean, tax, you know, taxes like taxes. We're producing when we did Vision Quest. Of course. The movie is fantastic. Yeah. The lap pull down scene. Yeah. One of the good for solo performance. Yeah. Yeah. He's great on that one. Um, so yeah, it's kind of disappointing. He's like losing the fastball in real time. Too bad. Well, evil Vince going into Danny's room. The old locked one door didn't lock the other door check the lack of one of my two bedroom doors. What a moron. This kid was it is the first from Helsing though. Yeah. In the movie where you're like, Oh, it's not just that he had to murder his co-conspirator in a racketeering scam. He was actually now menacing this young boy. Uh, one of my favorite scenes in the movie and also probably the funniest scene in the movie. Frank punches a guy outside of the school. It's just the best gets in the car. That guy has not been in the film before. It's no longer in the way that like he knocks him down and he's fucking square punches him in the face outside of his school. And the way the scene ends is Terry Polo going, sorry, Mike. No, that it goes to him in the car. They're driving away and the sun goes dad. That was cool. And she goes, Danny, don't you realize what I've just done? It's called kidnapping. Yeah. And it's like, how did they, how did this stand the movie? The cops care about it. Yeah. We got a punch throw it outside of the school. Yeah. Shut down the roads. You know what I've just done? What an amazing move. This is the boat house fire. The mom realized him Rick is a bad guy. And then I like the I like the wallet scene when when the work. Rick realizes that Danny took his wallet and he's just like, you're a little fucking liar, aren't you Danny? Well, we skipped over Danny's betrayal of his father on the witness stand. Oh, yeah. That's right. Absolutely nightmare. One of the most nightmare sequences in movie history. How fucking dare he? Yeah, I don't know. I don't have been did that. I don't know if I'm bouncing back. But like dad, can I have 20 dollars? He's dead. I'm going to - Dad, he's like, I could just summer. - He's dead, he's dead.
If you if you just saw murder, it's like, I'm going to kill your dad next. I don't know, man. I couldn't be me. Couldn't move. Yeah, I would never turn them into me. Eber wrote about the final confrontation, the speech that Vince does. The speech provides additional information that is desperately unwanted in a way that inspires only bad laughs from the audience. Just when you want to end the movie without any more stumbles. It's really bad. It's all confined in a garage for some reason. Yeah. Where does it? I mean, it feels like like an 80s canon movie where it's just so awful. The action staging. Well, there's actually, it's kind of funny because there's no storytelling that suggests there would be a better ending. Like we don't know anything about this guy. So it's not like, oh, and of course he died doing this, which was always his little flaw. It's like, oh, he had a fucking electrical box with a, what is a wrench? A crowbar. Yeah, would you even die from that? I don't even know. Let's find out. I mean, the crowbar is literally resting on top of the fuse box. It's not even though it is like pierced into the wiring or anything. It's this is one of the many reasons I love this movie though. They spend $75 million on it. And the last 20 minutes just becomes a lifetime TV movie being filmed in Winnipeg. Yeah, where they're just like, we figured it out. We could film every scene in one day and get everybody out of here. But it does have the Netflix like modern true crime thing that you love, though, where it's like, my stepfather is beloved by the Chamber of Commerce, but not by me. Right. Thanks. What do you have for most rewatchable catch playing catch? Catch is pretty is probably my pick. I do like the kill scene. Like Craig said, I like the incinerator. I like Danny trying to figure out how to get out of the car. Somehow the car light not going on in the car when you open the door. First car in the last 30 years that usually the car light goes on. Most 2001 thing about this movie, I had either MSN news searches or just easily being able to change your identity with no repercussions. Yeah. I think you can do that now. Slow loading websites and probably dial up internet or hardware to internet and also just like casual shakilla neal references. Oh, good one. Yeah, who would that be? He'd be in who am I? Victor William and Yamaha. That's what he was saying. Too soon, Bill. Oh, sorry. I also had just Steve Buscemi as a dirt bag criminal stealing the movie. That's just in that zone. That was what he did. Probably not even in his top 10 of dirt bag criminals did on a movie. Flick Gundall, a butter on my ass. A lot of the pops in my mouth award for something I just enjoy. I have a good one for this. I just have Vince Vaughan bullying children, but I also agree with Sean that Steve Steve Buscemi playing a dirt bag is just I'll watch always works. I love when John Travolta tries to get mean in movies. Yeah, you know, he's like, if you touch a hair on my son's head, you know, he's trying to do like Mel Gibson and ransom, but he just does not have that gear at all. Yeah. I have, uh, this is really special to me when a hooker complains to our hero that the bad guy liked watching TV more than you like it laid. It's it's like about the it's character development crossed with some sort of weird complaint that this guy is such a psycho. It's kind of like the reverse of in Bull Durham when you cause like we didn't fuck man. We she just read poetry all right, but it feels like a direct sequel to the scene in Fargo when they take the two prostitutes back to the motel room and then they have that cut to them watching, uh, Jay Leno or whatever later that. 40 hours has that with Gants. Yeah. The lady says that I hope you like shooting cops a whole lot more than you like getting laid. I here's my here's my, uh, defense of these guys and these movies. I would argue they do like getting laid because they're paying for a prostitute. I feel that like it a little bit for all for an experience is take part in my rituals. You know, like share my passions. My husband's I love who's tell us what you do. Like sorry prostitutes. These guys have simple, they're simple dudes. You like college basketball getting laid and racketeering those are his three things. Can we talk about Ray's plan though? Yeah, what was Ray's plan to get paid off to go away? But so Ray's like, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to show up in town and I'm going to get him a tellroom and I'm going to wait around as long as possible and make him uncomfortable without actually doing anything. But I've been told by Rick Jack that I am not allowed to go out into, in public in the town and get some eggs. Like that is, well, the problem is, you know, we got, we got Frank snooping around. So he's like, you cannot be in town. People are going to start asking questions and you're too candid. You know, like you're too unrefined for this place. But Ray actually thinks that he's just going to get paid off by Rick Jack and it's just going to work. He spent a lot of time inside, you know, maybe he doesn't, his reflexes are dulled. Do you have a Floyd Gandale from this movie or no? Oh, um. Gandale. Probably just Gandale. It's probably dirtbag with Chevy. I did feel like I got a little sequel to Fargo for 10 minutes. It was really enjoyable. It's nice. Needed Stormar, Stormer. Peter Stormer. What's age is the best? The comedy of Senator, Senator Vince Vaughan, Travolta, and then just what an absolute shitty Sundanias. Dating sucks. Terrible. I mean, admittedly bad age for little boys, 12, 13. Good actor. Good actor. That's really really good. But just kind of sucks and turns on his dad at one point. And I don't know, I felt like he could have defended his mom better at the end. It seemed like a pretty good sailor. Yeah, solid sailor. Like just dumped his basketball team at the start of the movie. Oh, yeah. It's like, where's Danny? I don't know. Oh, he was doing a weird, his stowaway fetish again. Huge sports. Like climbing the cars. Yeah. Incredible sports movie. Yeah. Travolta punching a medley pair to sage the best. Baseball catch. I wrote down last stand for Airlines for Travolta and Vince. Sure. Travolta's got, it's all the way back on the side. It's the remnants of the front with a little bit mullet in the back. It's the remnants of the Vincent Vega, right? Yeah, he's about to go into two paylann and then Vince. It's really going back. But Vince has a full head of hair. Do you think they should have made more of Travolta and Bishemi in a diner as an echo of pulp fiction when Bishemi's Travolta's waiter? No question. Yeah, I would have just told them to add the Harold Becker. Like ask for a vanilla. A.J.D. too at that point. What do you have for what's age the best? Anything. This ending Vince owns his career as a dramatic star. You think that's age the best? Yeah, I think that's a good answer. Yeah, because they have eggs off a great run. Right. Anything? I had Bishemi playing needle dick low level who likes prostitutes and a pretty straightforward old school likeable Travolta performance, which you don't get a lot after this. I had a scumbag characters named Rae. Yeah, that's great. Great name for me. Is Rae the best scumbag name? Is there a better one? I mean, Rae definitely his nickname is slick. You know, like it is. It is like there's no here of a movie named Rae that I can think of. It's usually like what was that that show we liked with Kyle Chi in there? Bloodline? Was that what it's called? No bloodline. Bloodline, yeah. Was the scumbag brother? Was his name Rae? I think so. Could have been. Yes, yeah. Anyway, it's like my brother Rae's back in tenets like oh boy Buckel. The two good Rae's. Rae Charles. Rae Allen. And Rae from Field of Dreams. Rae Cancella. Rae Romano. But I mean like a character name. That's what he's Rae Barone. That's Rae Man. In that show. Oh right. But he goes by Rae. He does. I thought everybody loved Rae Man. It's like no people. Underrated dirtbag name in movies is Dennis. There's always like a Dennis kind of a wild bag. Yeah. You don't come across a lot of Dennis's these days. No. What are the dirtbag names? I think Rae, I know right away. Frank could go either way though. Like Frank's the good guy in this movie. Yeah, but barely. Rae, I'm pretty sure you're a fuck up. Well, there's always like the last name versions of it too. Like Hutch or Slater. Or you're like, oh, this guy. He's on the wrong side of the law. Great shot, Gordon Award. It's got to be Bishemee getting stabbed, right? I had rich shadow emerging on Danny's wall. I free-closed the door. But this is not exactly. Yeah, North by Northwest. I had kind of an inverted great shot, Gordon, because it's the worst shot in the movie. But it's like there's a hold on the crowbar resting on top of the fuse box. And it's like, and it's one of the fake electrocuting himself. That's the worst shot, Gordon. He fucking knows self that electrocution. It's so bad. At that point, he just wants to get out of North Carolina. He's like a Daniel Scott that far away. Let me get out of here. Chess Rockwell-Brockle-Enters and we're best character name. Rick Barnes. Absolutely. It has to be, right? Yeah. I think he's probably coaching Providence around that. I don't know if he's at Texas yet. Oh, five or no one. Oh, one. He's at Texas. Yeah, when you're at Texas, you go to Texas? He's at Texas in the 90s. Yeah, is he? He goes to Texas UT. And now he's where? He's at Tennessee now. Tennessee. He's Providence initially. Rick Barnes is a Providence. Yeah, was he? Was he Dodge Amgot's coach? That was his first. I thought Patino was a Providence. I'm seeing now we're going to have to look this up. Texas 98 to 2015 in the Tennessee sense. And he was at Providence 88 to 94. Yeah. There you go. Okay. When was Patino at Providence? Earlier. Okay. A category we brought back that, I don't know why I'd ever went away, but could this movie have had a better title? Domestic disturbance is an awful title. There's not a huge domestic disturbance in this movie. Very bad. Really awful.
not my father. Well, the stepfather's taken step murderer. What about Southport? So I wrote the Southport lie. Yeah, Southport lie. Yeah, I love when you put the town in the title and then you like, but whose lie is it? Was it Danny's lie? Was it Rick Jackson lie? Southport lie. What about the boat yard? That's good too. I like that. What about for Netflix, it would be this is my family. Pulling the Rick Jackson story and Vince Fondre like a scary look at his face. I just wrote the boy who cried wolf. I feel like that would have worked. Which one do you like out of those? What about joint custody? Oh, that's great. Not that's great. I love that. But that immediately caused to mind like divorced parents who still share custody of a marijuana farm. Oh, sure. Yeah. And it's like, it's like a pineapple look surprise. Yeah. It's great. Yeah. That's very good. You see Chavulte and Vaughan and joint custody yet. See area of a flex. I feel bad because this is so easy, but the Sarah Connor award for wood modern technology ruined this movie. And you were asking why from hell goes away. And I do think it's because of surveillance technology and smartphones and high speed internet and search engines. Yeah, there's cameras at the Southport brickyard. Yeah. Yeah. And also just like they would look up Rick Frank. What's his name? Rick Jack. Rick Jack's way would like be like, does he have any social media? And it would have started three months ago. Yeah. Yeah. I'm finding him on blue sky. Yeah. This guy was really fired up for a caucus. He really likes Mayor Z. But she's girlfriend award weekly link of the film. It's really the last 15 minutes but especially the garage fight ending. I just such a strange choice. Do you have outdoors outdoors? You've all these things you could have done gone downtown. I don't know why you want to be confined to a weird garage. Well, they blow the load with a boatyard fire. Yeah. Do the boat fire earlier and then they're stuck doing this very small set piece at the end. And then the electric ocean is just really singarly terrible. It's bad. No disrespect. I had Frank's new girlfriend. Yeah. Diane. Yeah. I just think that that could have been like 3% more interesting and it would help the movie. Michelle Fifer, who do you think? Emily Watson. Young K. Winslet. Kifin Ambritheason. Yeah. Wow. Either one. Now it works for the Frank's relationship. What's age is the worst? I got to say this up top. Susan's miscarriage and the way it's treated. Where they're like, hey, sorry, you're in the movie ends. I guess this eliminates a very complicated or yeah, like after effect of like the father of this baby is dead. But it is just like, hey, sorry about that. Once you head over to the hospital and get that checked out, that could have been a way to do the sequel. Yeah. Make it make it a Damien open of the hospital. They got it. Clean that up. Step murder or two son of Rick Jack. I had. Step murder. Yeah. I had that multiple nitpicks about that including how would they know she lost the baby within two minutes of the garage fight? Like, pretty sure they have to run test on that. The last five days. This is not a grim at all. When the fucking detective comes up to apologize to Frank, he's like, hey, say it to my son. I'm already fucking say it to you, huh? Detective's like, I'm sorry. Frank does it go. I've lost my entire business. Yeah. My wife's husband's dead and everything's burned down. I had this desperately needed to be a rated R movie. I needed more F bombs. Yeah. Yeah. I needed two sex scenes. I think you have to have the mom Terry polo. Yes. Hearing her like groaning and the Danny being like really disturbed by hearing his mom, you know, in five rooms over. Yes. And then Vince coming out being like, hey, Danny, just getting some lemonade and just like having that. And then you have to say, but shut me with the hooker. You just have to. We just go back to lemonade for a second. Is that like your preference? I don't include. The blood sugar going in. And the Bouchemme murder could have been way better. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I feel like also for a tager was just him getting stabbed in general in the set is like that sucks. That's horrible. Yeah. Cause it's funny. It's like he does. It's not funny, but he does like three or four movies a year all the way around this movie. And in 0 4, he just does one, which kind of means he had shot like what he shot. And then it all came out. But like he had basically taken a couple of years. Well, he goes on to the sopranos. Oh, that's right. He goes on to the sopranos. So he spends a lot of time doing that season five sopranos. The best. My favorite sopranos. It's an amazing season. Tony Blondetta. I have for what stage the worst, the police sergeant as well, who also gets a Vincent Chase award for I was sure this character was good. I also had him for overacting. This is Ruben Santiago Hudson who just got nominated for Tony. So he's like very accomplished actor a lot of work. But when he's like he's terrible in this movie. What does he say? He was like, I'm not wasting any more time or money on this sick kids bullshit like that. That is like nobody understands why he's so mad at dad. Yeah, sick kid. For age the worst, also just any Jonathan D Cranes, a producer of this movie. He was Travolta's manager from 78 or from maybe 1988 through 2004. Any movie that he's listed as a producer is a not the kind of like us then golly type. Yeah. Yeah. The mom stuff is she's just such a stupid character. I can't believe they didn't fix any of it. She's one of the dumbest characters in the From Hill movies. This movie claims it's in Maryland, but it's entirely shot in North Carolina. Yeah. And I don't know why they didn't just say it was in North Carolina. What was the point of being like, oh, the Maryland coast is something like why? The only sort of sign of it is when he gives him a cow rickian glove, but otherwise it doesn't feel like the chest is weird. This is my favorite though. There's a GQ interview with Travolta and he said he had an idea for an extra step in the end where after Vince Vaughan was electrocuted, he played dead for a few seconds, then bolted up now much stronger from the electricity and they had a second fight, but then he said that idea was scrapped. Let's do that. It would have been better in the like ridiculous horror movie troupe way for him to come back up. Yeah, like Michael Myers or something. Vince Fallen was like Hans Gruber. Yeah, Vince is like I'm out. My plane's out here tomorrow. Hans Gruber scale villain ranking. Vince is like a 3.5. Yeah, it's like I'm barely, I'm kind of rooting for him, honestly. Yeah. Roughly high in a ruptured overacting, we're giving it to the surgeon. And then Sean, you have a flex. I mean, it's the same as what we're seeing before the Sarah Connor award for what the modern technology ruined this movie. I just feel like reverse image search alone on a photo of Rick just ends this whole thing. We have to just like one piece of police work. Who was Ray? Like this guy's having eggs in town. He's clearly a person who's spending time there and they just disappears. They're not looking into this. That's another scene that's been seen where after the sergeant shooshes everyone away and it's like this kid, what does he keep me? I'm tired of waste money for him. Not having like the young female cop or somebody to be like, sorry, I got to ask, like, why would that kid make up a story that elaborate? Like they doesn't make you think there's also like, isn't there something about this Rick Barnes? And it would have been like, it seems like Danny probably would have seen Ray at the wedding as well. Yeah. Susan would have seen Ray when like he's introduced to her. Then Travolta sees Ray a couple days after the wedding. And he's like, I'm thinking about buying real estate here. Yeah. So it's not like everybody's like, who's Ray? This is a ghost. The kid made him up. Right. It's really strange. I watched my daughter, I watched this movie twice in the last month, including the first time with my daughter when she was home in the month of May. And she loved this movie because she loves off from Hell movies and she loves turn your brain off movies. And this is a good turn your brain off movie. But that's like a classic turn your brain off section where it's like, wait, why? Yeah. But you just like just don't even think about it. This is the entirety of Apple's Cape Fear right now. Yeah. One more break and then we got a how to stake. The CR thinks Luke Wilson could have been Harrison Ford how to stake a word. What do you got here? If this movie is about Steve Bishemmi's character hunting down vincs and that the tension is that Vince is trying to start a new life and Ray is getting in the way of that. It's like a really, really cool hot crime movie. And it's like they really had like an original, you know, criminal trying to turn a new leaf, getting hunted down by his past would have been awesome. Imagine five more Bishemmi and Vaughan scenes. But instead, we got Danny in the boat. This is sort of related to that in terms of how they misframe the movie. But Danny is the villain of the movie and he should be in prison for betraying his father publicly. And was kind of a deranged kid. That's some problems. Yeah. Yeah. The board, you know. Well, he really like climbing the cars. Like there's some stowaway thing they mentioned in the beginning. And they were like, yeah, he did that stowaway thing again. It's like, so he's just climbing into the back seats of cars. So he's acting out because his parents got divorced, right? Yeah. Like these are like weird runway things. Yeah, I think that Danny's probably, yeah. I had a Travolta and Bond switch parts better movie. That's my casting. What if it's the only thing I had? Oh, interesting. I think you're right. I just think it's better. I think it's funnier because this movie was always meant to be an unintentional comedy class.
Anyway, I think Travolta trying to be the bad big swing and dick bad guy and Vaughn being like the younger guy. He's got some Chicago mob ties. Yeah. Vaughn and Terry Polo got married when they're like 19. Right. He just makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. Vaughn's like a rich guy. Yeah. He just wants to work on folks. But it's a nice guy. They're like a little too far apart, Nate. They're almost 20 years apart. Vaughn and Travolta. And you can. It feels a little weird. Yeah. Well, it's also like why we're Travolta and Polo married. Right. Doesn't really. They're at least 15 years old. Yeah. She's supposed to really like this kids 12. She's probably. She's in her marriage. She's supposed to be like mid 30s. But in mid the parent, she's in mid 20s that comes out a year earlier. Yeah. Yeah. It's off. Casting when ifs couldn't find any. Best act I wore two really good ones. Chris Ellis and Ruben Santiago Hudson, right? Who's Chris Ellis? He's the other cop who's like always in NASA's control center. He's great. I went deep diver. Oh, okay. And Polo's girlfriend played Beecher's girlfriend on us. Sure did. That's right. And we saw. Sure did. The judge in the custody trial hearing. The evil jury foreman from a time to kill. Oh. Yeah. That guy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He's a good that guy. Yeah. You see his face and you just think about the KKK and that backtrouse of the set. This movie has a similar energy is a time to kill. We're just like. They're going for the KKK. Yeah. An hour into the movie. You're like, they're gonna lose. Dan Waiters word. It's Boshemi, right? Absolutely. Can you make a case for the hooker? No. Patty. Yeah. Patty. We're just passing time. Yeah. Spots and. Us the Paul. That whole thing with the lighter for it's like 20 25 bucks. Recasting couch director of city. I'm going to give you three choices as the sergeant. Okay. Um, the cultural fun one 50 cent. Like just trying to get rich or die. Yeah. Yeah. Just like I'm trying to move his down. The sergeant. The best. The story screams Maryland police. Okay. He's get rich. Oh, one. When does it come out? I think it is. Yeah. Philip Michael Thomas. Sure, man. Yeah. Okay. A little comeback for him. Older. He's been around doing little Rico tubs. I was thinking Ernie Hudson. Ernie Hudson. Yeah. Lawrence Fishburn. Where we've already spent 75 million. Let's go 80. A little over quality. Let's go 80. We already spent 75. Yeah. Sure. What's he doing in 2001? I think this is that he cover. Once you come. Post major. No, it's post major. Post major. That's right. Yeah. And starring. You're going to follow up the matrix. Well, playing the age lead and domestic disturbance. Tony. I'm going to yell at a terrible boy. Yeah. That could work. I'm going to go to the next one. I mean, there are a lot of movies about yachting that are better than this. There's some speculation about why is it on at all?
I would like to see, I'm cruising in the Vaughan part, isn't it? I can see. For saying, like, I'm not trying to be your dad, but I'd like to be your friend. And the baseball soon will be huge. Picket nets, all the obvious dubs, the full-in versus fuck. Do you think Rick put any effort into a new identity or did he just buy like a new kind of some new clothes? I think it's like a demand's an even bigger question. Like, the plan, so it's to pretend to be happy and marry a single mom and do public acts as a citizen in this town. I don't think it's pretending to be happy at all. He says to her, "You're the best thing that's ever happened to me." But does he really feel like he got away with it? Yeah. I think he thinks like, "I've always wanted to get out of the grime and be a big man in society." And what you need is money to do that, and it's all working out. And so he just like, Terry Polo is a smoke show, so I'm super stoked. I mean, that's another one that I wanted to ask is like, how fat? So when this movie starts, how long have they been divorced for? A year? 'Cause they make it seem like the divorce just happened. I would say a year. Yeah. She got pregnant pretty fast. How much time? Terry Polo, a little loose in this movie, baby. How much time goes by during the film? It's unclear. Yeah. All of it's unclear. I thought a couple of days, but that would mean she was-- It's got to be more than that. But she was probably pregnant at the wedding. They get like a custody trial. It feels like September October. I don't think that this town has a big docket. They're probably just like, sure, custody trial. We got nothing going on. Turn it tomorrow. Rick changes his name and his life, but it's totally cool with having a newspaper wedding announcement with this picture. Oh, yeah. I'm probably vetoing that if I'm Rick Barrett. Not a good choice. I will say the choice of picking a name in which there is another prominent person with that name. Good Google. Is really smart. Yeah. So you'd recommend that. Yeah, you'd be like, my name is Humphrey Bogart. Do you think they should have had Rick with his old life when the newspaper thing comes up, like had a beard? Like something about him. It looks exactly the same. It's just like, oh, this is clearly him. The no blood in the car post stabbing was incredible. Southport brick works just having no evidence at all anywhere. No fingerprints on the door. Nothing in the incinerator. It's just all gone. There's not like one idea or anything. If Danny had just said at the trial, like I stand by what I said, and also this man has threatened me since then and said he's going to kill my father. If I say what I'm saying on the stand, at the worst, the cops would be like, we got to get Danny out of that house and we need to put you guys into protective. Yeah, we got to at least figure this out for the next two weeks. How does Frank find Betty, the hooker? Is that her house all of a sudden? No, that's in the motel, isn't it? Was it? It seemed like in a bar fight. I think he goes to her house after going to the motel. Patty, the hooker, it's Patty. It's Patty and he sees the phone records. Right. He's like, who's this and he's like, I love the girls. What's the ladies? This guy's fucking Bernthal and our show now is Wayne Jenkins. Fucking track of people down. I didn't know I was working with Sherlock, all of this. Just track of people down but can't figure out Rick Barnes is Rick Barnes. How would they know immediately that she lost the baby is my favorite no pick from this? And then Danny, I'm sorry. Thanks, Sergeant. I'm going to be suing the town now. Thanks for the. Thanks for the apology that I'll now be talking about in the trial because my boat house is gone. That South Port Chamber of Commerce is going down. Yeah. Everything. Like Frank is basically going on the town. This brings the town to its knees. Yeah. It's over. Anything else? From picking nets. No. We'll prequel prestige TV all black guys. One more thing. Yeah. What's going on with the other two convicts? Are they still in prison? Those guys are, those guys are out, but they were looking for Rick. Why not? Yeah. I think they were probably like, we can't find them or any, we're idiots. That's the sequel. Raise like I almost gave up and then you had a fucking wedding announcement. All I knew was you got, you go rear on the east coast. That's DD2. DD2. Coming. Yeah. Sometimes they come back. Two thousand twenty seven. Well, they could show up and just be like, look, like now it's your debt. It's a, to Frank, you know, yeah, and you got to make us boats for the getaway boats for bankrupt. We're in drug boats. I'm going all black cast for the next category. Okay. And they probably already made it. We just didn't know what happened. I would do prequel. I would do the racketeering storyline. Oh, yeah. That was what I did too. What? I want to see what they did. Oh, it's so vague. Chicago. Yeah. Turns in in Chicago. You think we get Ron Dean in there? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Is this movie better? The Wayne Jenkins, Fergie the Flores, Zayn Lowe, Robert Evers, Dr. Charles Nichols or someone else? You're a little fucking liar. Aren't you, Danny? You're going to do this for me. I'm going to clip your nuts, like I clipped your daddies. He builds boats for me now. I was watching. I'd seen the other day. That's a perfect match. Yeah. It's such a good thing. Fergie the Flores. Yeah. So you think you're the only guy in Charleston with a gun? I wanted Dr. Charles Nichols at the Chamber of Commerce ceremony, and then having Frank there. You have to excuse my friend Frank, he's very not well. Just want to ask her who gets it. We rarely do this, but this is a full-fledged nobody, no Oscar scene out for this one. One of the worst performances for Apex Mountain and just one Oscar in show history. Really, really, that you can't make a case for anything. Unanswerable questions. Did Travolta Terri Polo get back together? I don't think so. This was Maisie Wattneo, was another way to do a sequel in the movie is, so Danny is traumatized for life by what happens, obviously, but Susan and Travolta get back together, and then that drives Diane Travolta's girlfriend crazy, and then she goes out and seeks revenge in the sequel. D.D. too is Diane's revenge. That's where you really needed Tiffany Ambert these in instead of that actress. She would have cooked. She was bringing some of the foul. Yeah, she's angry now. Terri Polo and Herod's off, Jack Rick's fortune. I bet that they hadn't drawn up wills yet. They got married. Do you do that the day of, I mean, they're married. She inherits everything. So in a weird way, it all worked out for everybody. They get back together, they get pleased getting involved with what the money, how that money got. He sues the town. He owns Southport. Oh, it's like a big chunk of the city now because they fucked up his boat house. Huge W for Travolta. Yeah. Yeah, it's big. Except for his son being destroyed forever. Well, that was my other in Antsboro. When does Danny kill his first prostitute? Is it patty? I think Danny becomes a compulsive liar after this because he's like, it worked. It continues to be a compulsive liar. And then Danny should become a detective. And it should drive this sergeant guy crazy with now the chief of police. He's like, I can't believe so little fucking liar is my detective. We've really nicely shaped the domestic disturbance in America. I can't believe they'd make nine of these. Danny's hosting a fantasy football podcast for the ringer. Um, Danny, yeah, Danny's like me and my mechanics were hanging out last night. He knows a thing or two about electrocution as well. Those are the qualifications. The memorabilia he'd both want for this movie, clearly the Rick Barnes Chamber of Commerce award. That big black he got. I would take that. Danny's Cal Ripkin glove. Oh, the glove would be good. I want one of those boats. The wooden boat. The handmade boat. Pretty flammable. Good point, fair. Coach Finstack, Mr. Mayor, I give her a best, worst life lesson. Believe your child. Sure. You don't agree with that. Well, yeah, sure. I think my whole thing is if a story is that elaborate, you have my attention. Yeah. I guess I, I saw Rick Killaguy. It's like, so we drove in. There's a thing. There was an incinerator like at some point. There's just too much detail on the stand and he's like, I actually got out in town and I, I, I just took off. It's like, well, how do you know about the incinerator then and how do you know about all the details of this thing? Yeah. Best double feature choice. I have the stepfather. It's a tricky one because it makes them, this movie look worse because the stepfather is better. It's a father's good. I have to be cool because you need to have a pala cleanser of Travolta, like you have like a Travolta and Vaughn. Yeah. They're in it together. That battle for the earth. No. Who won the movie? I think Vaughn did just because I just like watching Vince Vaughn. He's really a Travolta. I really respected how hard he tried all throughout. I wrote Matt O'Leary, who's the only actor who's like actually giving a good performance. You know, kid performance is really up and down, but he kind of hinges on him. He's very good in the movie. It would be kind of amazing if Culkin was doing good sun in this movie. Wow. And kind of came face to face with another killer. Oh, like two from hell, hell characters you meet. That would be cool as if you could start making like from hell crossover movies. Another cinematic universe idea. That sounds great. What'd you think, Craig? It's a great summer selection. I immediately knew I could watch this movie at like noon on a Monday, which was great. I'm really racking up some classics here from hell month and I could talk to actually no one. Yeah, I honestly, mostly just kind of fascinated observing John Travolta in this movie like an extra terrestrial. And I kind of was just obsessed with his entire look in performance and everything about him. But what the circumference of his head, his head is enormous. Triple that spawns head. Scientologists don't drink, right? Do they? I don't know. I don't believe so. His familiarity with the Bud Light can is. It seems like it's the first time he's holding whatever it is. What do they call the cruise would have that too? It's not Bud Light. Like what does it say on it? I think it's supposed to be like Keystone or something like that or Nadi. Trimolt does really all over the place. He could really play up and down his opponent. He's like Darnell. That's like, you could win three games in them and he's the worst quarterback in the league. It's a great take. Or he's like, you could win a Super Bowl in the right system. True. It's true. He's got the right coach. Trimolt has saved Darnell. What a Craig's best take. Yeah. Yeah. When I was growing up, I loved Get Shorty. I thought Get Shorty was the greatest movie as a kid who was obsessed with movies and in that movie, he's so fucking cool. He's so. Yeah. Unbelievable. Yeah. And you know, he's in his like late 30s, early 40s in that movie. He's not a kid or anything. But it's like just a few years later where you're like, has this guy ever been in a movie before? Right. It's crazy. He hit a stretch in the late 90s where it felt like he was one of the five biggest stars in the world again. Yeah. And he was, you know, Costner had started to lose some steam. Some of the guys from the 90s, 80s were losing steam and he was kind of the backup choice to hanks for a lot of different roles for the older guys. That period where it feels like he and Nick Cage are the two biggest action stars in the world. Right. Which was strange. Well, it was fun when they were in the same movie together. Yeah. I loved it. I like it when he's in bad movies, I like when he's in good movies. It's a general's daughter is the only time it goes sideways. He's singular. He's a singular. Do you like some action? Yeah. I just rewatched it because we did a Robert DuVal episode, great DuVal performance in that movie. It's not bad. It's a little stiff, but it's not bad. It's a, it's a very confusing similarly at the end of that movie, but that's similar. That's kind of also at the end of his respectability. Well, we did this out of sequence, but good, the good son which we've already done is coming next week. And that's a much, much, much better movie. But from Hell Month's CR, it's just, it's heaven, just bangers left and right. Turn your brain off. Have some fun. Thanks to Craig. Thanks to Gahau as well. Thanks to you guys. And we'll see you next week on The Good Son.
Podcast Summary
Key Points:
*Domestic Disturbance* (2001) is a poorly executed but rewatchable "from hell" movie that exemplifies the franchise's decline in the 2000s.
The film features over-the-top, incoherent plotlines, awkward character dynamics, and a lack of narrative coherence, despite moments of entertainment.
Vince Vaughn’s performance is seen as a comedic misstep—trying to transition from a comedy persona to a serious actor, but failing due to mismatched tone and character depth.
John Travolta delivers a heartfelt, nuanced performance as a loving but ultimately flawed father, making his role one of the film’s emotional anchors.
The movie was heavily edited, with a 22-minute cut from the original 111-minute version due to 9/11 disruptions and studio pressure, resulting in a truncated, less impactful final product.
A real-life bar fight involving Vaughn, Buscemi, and screenwriter Scott Rosenberg during filming adds chaos and legend to the film’s history.

Despite its flaws, the movie has cult appeal due to its absurdity, improvisational scenes (e.g., the baseball catch), and the humor of its dumb characters.
Harold Becker, the director, has a strong filmography, but his commentary on the film is dismissive and unaware of its problems.
