Desde Gaza

Dr. Refat Latan’s journey from Gaza to Bolivia and back to Gaza reflects the deep human cost of prolonged conflict and displacement. Born in 1977 in Gaza, he studied medicine abroad, escaping to Bolivia in 1998 to live freely and build a life beyond borders. When he returned to Gaza in 2010, he found a devastated country under a strict Israeli blockade, facing constant bombings, shortages, and trauma. As a physician working in hospitals, he endured relentless attacks and witnessed mass casualties, including the 2023–2025 rocket attacks and the deadly 7 October festival assault. Despite his medical expertise, he struggled to escape due to rising evacuation costs and lack of support. Through social media, he documented life in Gaza, gaining global attention and raising funds for his family. After years of appeals, Mexico and Bolivia facilitated his evacuation via a humanitarian route in 2025. His family resettled in Spain, where they began rebuilding. While he feels relief, he carries guilt for leaving behind family and community. The story highlights resilience, digital activism, and the enduring human spirit in the face of war, showing how personal stories can become global acts of solidarity. It also underscores the urgent need for humanitarian solutions and the moral complexities of survival in a conflict zone.

In reality there are not many more options, it's not like a normal city where there is no park that has a place to have fun, it's the only place where we wanted to go sometimes when we wanted to spend a lot of time going to the beach with the kids and playing football. Refat lived in Gaza, born there in 1977 in that franja is very strange in the Mediterranean coast. He runs in just an hour and a half in North-South and in less than 30 minutes from this to this. But he's super poor, he lives more than 2 million people almost as much as in Medellin or in Kito. An extreme of the border with Egypt and the rest with Israel. When Refat was little, Israel made the control of Gaza from inside. When they hit us sometimes and when things got ugly there were several weeks of touch that you want, where people could not go out to the street. That's why when Refat finished the school at the end of the 90s and he took him to choose what to study, he opted for a career that in that then the Union was still not offered in Gaza. I wanted to know more countries, I wanted to live in freedom. I decided that it would be a doctor. The first lesson was medicine, because it is a profession in Palestine. It is something nice that everyone appreciate it and value it and it also benefits a lot in the economic part. That's how it would come from there and it also could help your family not to be small. It is the second of 13 brothers. The family always has the hope that those children when they think they have a good profession, they have a good state with them to help the family. At that moment, I went to the foreign school to study, it was not so strange. There was even agencies that were responsible for the students who wanted to go out of Palestine. They translated the title, they helped with the process of visa, with the passage and with a body in certain universities. To promote their services, they distributed flowers in the schools, in the mosque. It was usual to go to Turkey, to Ukraine, to Germany, but Refat escaped all those options. In Turkey, there was to be an exam and I was not confident in trying it. Ukraine, in its time, had a bad name. They told that there were students who paid to test the signatures. And Germany was also responsible for Refat. But suddenly, it appeared a fourth option. A trip agency that had hired some students to travel to Bolivia. Bolivia. Refat never had heard of that place. I didn't know him. I was looking for him in the map where he was. I brought him, because the leaves looked like a so-called university. And after seeing him go a little, I suppose he lived there, too. That convinced him. Refat, with only 20 years, he didn't have money for him, only to buy something like that. Of course. But his father, like so many other Casatis, was working for then in Israel. And he won well. He promised to help him. It was something like a investment to bet on his son more studious so that then he will help him go ahead. It was a luxury trip because it was a trip that someone has to keep and every month they have to send money. And not everyone told him about that privilege. With the money Refat hired all the services of an agency. And a couple of months later, in 1998, without having imagined it, he never had a place in Bolivia. What did not suspect then was the unexpected paper that that country and what was about to learn in it would have its life. When Refat arrived in Bolivia, he was a young man who wanted to know how he was the world outside of Gaza. He continued to be friends with his father in that new culture. He was happy. I wish I could live my whole life like that time. Because it was the time when I had less problems, less worries. I was already a medicine. But I would go, I would go with my friends, parties. I did not have to adapt. It is not so complicated to learn Spanish when you are living in the country without young people who have to face your life. It is alone without families. I saw Mexican novels. With that I learned vocabulary at the same time as I was trying to decipher how they were American Latin. And I heard romantic music, trying to understand what they said. To feel, to feel the songs, to live the novels, I remember a little more, maybe it was a year or so. And for the two years, I was completely integrated. I said to many people, close to me, that they are Colombian, who said to me, they are Latino. Nothing to see with Palestine. Your attitude, your accent, everything is Latino. So, well, they said to me, "Palestine canva". Canva, which is how they say in Bolivia to the people in the area of Santa Cruz. In fact, this battle, I liked there, that spent the time and ended up being 12 years old. I gave time to change to Santa Cruz, to finish the race, to fall in love, to marry even, and to get to the Bolivian nationality. But the marriage lasted for a long time. She told her, she broke the heart, and ended up divorcing herself. Shortly after, Rafael was going to work at the top. A provincial frontier in Argentina. But in the change of the country, he began to feel alone, to train his family, to Palestine. He felt that he was forgetting the Arabic language, his mother tongue. Maybe he didn't speak Arabic. He was the communication with my family less and less and less. Because they had their own things, and they had my own things. So, I was seeing that I'm leaving, and I'm forgetting my own things, that I don't want to lose. So I decided to return. My idea was to spend a few months at home and go back after the jump. And the house, to update myself, to talk more about Arabic, is how to load up again. You understand? And go back and follow the same thing. Back to Gaza, it was an impact. It was 2010. Rafael was more than one decade without seeing his neighborhood in the city of Hanyunis, south of France. The first thing he surprised him was the noise. In that time, Israel had bombed the only electrical center in France. And there were only 4 or 5 hours of electricity per day. That's why almost every neighbor had generators that were very hard. And the smell, the heat is also. Imagine how many engines, when they are walking noise, the more the smell of the engines. Everything was brown. The first days, Rafael passed them with his family. He remembers all his siblings, gathered at his parents' house, listening to his mother, telling stories of when they were kids. He is like the soul of the memories. When he feels with us, he begins to talk. He remembers things like when he was a year old, he remembers things that we do, stories of many things. These memories are very beautiful for us. There was even more aware of what he had lost. There are things that don't cover up. A sister told her that when she was 2-3 years old, she didn't see her when she was 5-6-7-10-12-12-12. She lost all that time. Quería darles algo y alegría, no quería abandonarles. No falte nada, pero even the strongest need a break. No sabíamos nada. Y no leía. O a buscar comida, gas, agua. No puedes apretar. Sarah tells us the rest of the story. Rafael began to retake the contact with the friends he had done in Latin America, to write them on social networks, to see if they could help. They gave him two advice, that they created a recommendation campaign for to be able to receive donations and that he began to record and publish videos telling his day. Because I have had a weapon in my hand. It was then when he remembered that he had a tool that took years without using it, something that almost forgot and that just nobody around had. It was a weapon that served to me and my family. Rafael knew Spanish and finally he could use it. I am Dr. Refatlatan, I talk about it here since I was young. Today is February 29th, here I show you where I am reflected with my son. He began to record and publish videos on Instagram. They were from those videos of a day in my life. There are thousands in social networks. Generally, they are people reading their work, showing their house, their car, but the defat showed life in the middle of a genocide. The most atrocities that we have seen in our screens in the last years. Hello friends, how are you? How are you? Good afternoon, practically every day. Here you are going out of the hospital, I see it. As you can see, it looks like a barrier. There are a lot of refugees. It was not a person of networks, just had some followers, but soon he began to reach more and more people. I was going to buy something, all dark here, and you know that until Israel ended up with all that power of electricity. It showed how they got water, food. At the centre of the village, to continue some things, they are a cell phone, a paper and as they lived the attacks. How are you friends? I don't know if you listen to that sound so strong, there are planes in the sky. There are a lot of planes now on top of each other. In this video, it was with its five children in the house of the house that lives. They are sitting around an improvised fire. In the smallest of all, there are ham for three years, agita with a paper called. I'm distracted with him, he is a little bit doing a fire, I'm going to be a little now. And well, as always friends, still need his support. Refat, calm down in the videos, do not talk isolated nor angry. If it is to understand how the serenity can maintain so much terror. I told myself, "Hey, why are you not crying? I cry, but I'm not crying." Do you understand? It is difficult for you to cry, despite the fact that we are passing. I don't want to do that show. I'm living a crisis that I'm showing what it is not time to cry. It is the moment of working and when I arrive at the moment of being saved, I will stay crying in a beach and in a bed where I sit with desire to cry. So I was crying. I did not sleep much, I was talking to a lot of people. I stayed with my cell phone all day, looking to talk to people, to open more paths, to try to reach more people. There are people who supported me secretly. There are people who watched all the days to know if we have eaten, if we are good, if we pass the night well. I wrote to you from Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Spain, people that I had never seen, but that I had connected with her story through the networks. Soon, the Refa account in Instagram came to have more than 100,000 followers. Yes, those people give you food, they give you hope. And think that the world is not so bad, mentally there is a lot, there is a lot of evil, but at the same time there are a lot of people who want to help and they have a good heart. In April, three months after starting with the campaign, Refa had already achieved more than $10,000. It was a lot of money, although it is not enough to pay their salary, that was needed another 20,000. But little after, that option paid to go out on the border, left it available. The 6th of May, 2024 and Raele invaded Rafa and bombed the border. No one could go there. Refa was then in the center of the news and the media saw him in a opportunity. What we are going to do now is go to Rafa because he is the doctor in Rafa that has very good days, doctor, very good days. He was a witness of what happened in Rafa and could say it in Spanish. We are forced to go to a zone where it is usually destroyed, we are going to go up to the buildings. I don't know how we are going to fix it there. It was not only the nights responding to its followers, the journalists who wrote them from different parts of the world asking for an interview. Refa became a kind of reporter for media in Spanish. Before it was, how is it? Here, with life, but good. Those first days of May, I had to go back to Hanjunis, which for then was totally destroyed. Here, in fans, among the men, looking for new lives, here. And to people who come to Rafa a lot, digging, and many dug here, to Rafa, now digging, to Rafa, and here. The money that I received was not enough to go out of gas, but if I could use it for the day, to be able to pay the rent of an apartment when almost no one could do it, when only some little buildings were left. Very few could buy a solar panel, pay $15 for a onion or buy flour at 50 euros per kilo. Sometimes it had money and we had nothing to buy. Do you understand? It was complicated to get money. There were here in general, through cryptocurrencies, for example. And the commissions were very high, up to 50%. But the money was enough to survive, to help your family and even your parents, your brothers. And for small victories, moments of celebration in the middle of so much horror, a fight, a cut of hair, a good food. Well, here is a day without gas with my children. Well, it is what you say for getting that. We have achieved five eggs. So, well, everything is going well, happy with the egg. They took months without getting eggs, they felt like a lie. Then, seeing it, eating it, it was like a party in the house. And tried to do things, to approach the normality with my children. To celebrate the birthday, for example. In that time of war, no one would be like that, but I had to do it with them. But at the same time, I had to show that to other people. Because imagine, you can't show a lot of joy, while there are people who are suffering, al lado. Yo estoy aquí y no puedo ayudarles. No llevaba maletas. No puedes desenguir nada absolutamente. ¿Tenes necesitas quedas necesitas? Sí, pero. Es otras cosas. Meninos me necesitan. Viene a meter aquí. Nada. Summary:
