Derby Day Preview

The episode begins with a montage of famous race calls before hosts Ben Coluzzi, Nick McGualter, and Wilbur Bott-Alford settle in to review Cox Plate Day and preview Derby Day at Flemington. The panel agrees the Cox Plate's one-off move to Flemington fell flat, with a crowd of 35,000 and a hollow atmosphere that would not have occurred at Moonee Valley. Cosmic Crusader's win is hailed as a genuine Group 1 performance and a testament to the Leek family's training, while Eliana's connections are criticised for sidestepping the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. The hosts also question the excuses offered for the beaten favourite and dissect several puzzling betting moves, including a well-backed international that flopped and Buckaroo's costly defeat. Attention then turns to the Flemington card, where Regal Ambition in the Vanity and Lady Shenandoah in the Empire Rose are nominated as the strongest bets of the carnival. The Victoria Derby is treated as a two-horse race between Stormy Marco and Cormier, both out of the Spring Champion Stakes, with the hosts warning Racing Victoria against shortening the race and destroying its staying prestige. The show closes with Sydney's Russell Balding Stakes and Golden Eagle, where She's Alibi is backed as a near-certainty, plus a brief look at the WA features.

Speaker 5G'day listeners and welcome back to the Racing Previews podcast It is Derby Day this weekend So get your best black and whites out Because it's going to be an absolute rip snorter of a day It always is Three Groupons on the card There used to be four The old Cantala 1600m handicap is now A wait for age race And it is on Champions Day But still nonetheless we've got three Groupons We've also got the Golden Eagle up there in Sydney Accompanied by the Russell Boulding If you are joining us for the first time And there were a few of those last week I'll get to that very shortly Welcome my name is Ben Coluzzi I'm your host I'm joined as always by Nick McGualter And Wilbur Bott-Alford Fellas how did you fare on Cox Plate Day
Speaker 6Still no nickname for me Flat as a Scheisenhausen cat He's as flat as a Scheisenhausen
Speaker 4He's as flat as a Scheisenhausen carter's hat Yeah that's me
Speaker 6What do you want me to nickname Cox Plate Day Yeah you know what That's actually the perfect stinger Because that's exactly what it was Flat Flat It's not Moonee Valley It never was going to be But it's still sad There was 35,000 people there But it was just a bit irrelevant to be honest
Speaker 5It was like It felt bigger than a Turnbull Stakes Day But still not as big as a Champions Day It felt sort of in between Where it was just a nothing day
Speaker 6It was just a hollow feeling Like when When True Rebel won When Surf and Bird won I just had like I just I watched both those races And I just immediately thought to myself Fuck the Valley would have been rocking If that was there Like there's two favourites kicked for home The joint would have been humming The vibe would have been electric And there was just nothing
Speaker 5Flemington when there's only 35,000 there It just doesn't hit the same And you don't get that
Speaker 6Okay so should we have had it at Caulfield Maybe Maybe you might have got a little bit People don't want to have this conversation Because Caulfield's such a bad track But should it have been at Caulfield
Speaker 7I think yes Personally Caulfield couldn't possibly Look their track is just
Speaker 5Well Their track's
Speaker 7Yeah Well look
Speaker 5Racing Victoria's decision was probably based A lot around maximising wagering And also maximising Well wagering was up Which of course it would be It's a Flemington car It's a Flemington You can get bigger fields
Speaker 6But to me Flemington don't Aren't giving the Cox Plate The love it deserves Yes because They've got their four days Which they've prioritised Like the birdcage wasn't open How can you not Like just open it Well there'll be no one there Well there'll be no one there Well Yeah Just some people trying
Speaker 5Some people Sell it as a five day package Rather than a four day package Some people are trying to say
Speaker 6That it wasn't ready Which is true Because I've seen some of the socials this week That some of the birdcages Are only ready But to me it was sort of like Well we're happy to host We're happy to have it But we're not really going to give you The full experience Because Well it was only for one year
Speaker 7So I mean like They're not going to
Speaker 6Yeah It just felt like a nothing Cox Plate Yeah but to me I feel like It would have been Done better elsewhere
Speaker 5So The straight racing Instead of Obviously you have the Sprints at Moonee Moonee Valley A round of bend Was cast And for some reason All the winners down the straight Were winning on the inside lanes Wild Which is Wild Like do you remember Do you remember Will Do you remember when It used to play hard fence Down the outside Down the straight at Flemington The good old days
Speaker 6Hopefully it does this week
Speaker 5Mate there have been some meetings In the last Year or two Where it's been Hard inside Which is not what we Were used to In the years gone by
Speaker 7Well it was It was an advantage to be Toward the inside 100% On a Saturday
Speaker 5So Yeah Around the circle as well Or More so just the straight
Speaker 7I mean I'm talking about the straight Like it was You know No horse really came down The outside rail In the first race They split in two And the horses that won the race Were toward the inside So Yeah for sure
Speaker 5When When they played horses It was just like This just feels weird
Speaker 7I don't even know
Speaker 5They played horses At Flemington It wasn't Darryl Braithwaite But Oh and then they
Speaker 7And then they had Then they had the stage That was The stage debacle Cutting halfway Like it was The top right hand Left hand corner Of the manning yard And the horses Couldn't parade for one Yeah It was just a bit of a Debacle really It was
Speaker 5You know what else Has been a debacle We're in a new studio For the first time Ever tonight We are actually Downstairs in the main The main studios Nico We've been kicked out Yet again A couple problems upstairs
Speaker 6But Just treated like Less Less than what we are We are the
Speaker 5We are the bottom of the barrel In this establishment
Speaker 6I'll be taking this Further Level five I'll actually I'll actually be in the same Sort of spot as Hutchie On Saturday So I'll be bringing this up With him That's actually not a joke I'm being serious
Speaker 5What I What I can say Is a big Thank you To our listeners All those who tuned in Last week For our Cox Plate Preview Because it was a new
Speaker 6Clearly these idiots Upstairs They don't tune in
Speaker 5Nick stop They don't They don't tune in Well they're not But we got We had a A new record Probably by about Ten percent On our On our previous record In terms of listenership So There are There are thousands of people Clicking the play button On the Racing Previews Podcast every week So we We do appreciate it We would love to tip More winners Than we do Maybe if we do Get those winners We'll finally get some Love from upstairs
Speaker 6I doubt it
Speaker 5Cosmic Crusader What a winner this was Of the Cox Plate bot He's run to 105.6 Wait for age on Form King Which is An improvement On his Turnbull Seventh up here He was Obviously the fittest horse And he's been able to Yet again Just get back And really appreciate The lead speed up front
Speaker 7Yeah really fast pace It was like It was actually funny A lot of infantrymen Land legend Were actually slow to begin And to the About the 1200 metres I think there were like Six lengths in front of Par and then And then they just Really ramped it up From about the 1200 to about the 800 or 600 metres And it was a test of attrition It was a staying contest And at the 400 metres 11th, 7th, 9th And 8th and 10th Finished 1st, 2nd 3rd, 4th and 5th So the race Essentially just flipped On its head And it was a race Where you Inverted as Nick Nernan Would say Yeah it was It was a race where Swooping was Optimal So but the The right horse one I think Cosmic Crusader Was definitive In his Win He deserves You know He's run a Cox Plate winning figure This is This is a figure That wins the Cox Plate Most years It's a typical Sort of level It's you know It's not sort of Better than standard year But it's a It's a good number And he's a better horse Than I thought he was I think after the Underwood Stakes I was I think everyone was like that I thought I thought You know this is You know that's his level And it's a good level But he's no better than that And then he Turned it on On a Turnbull And I remember Brad really won a Caulfield Cup And he's won the Cox Plate now so
Speaker 5I remember coming Into the spring It was like Cosmic Crusader Like he's a good horse From the west If he's going to win A group one It's probably going to be A Memsie Or an Underwood And when he didn't Win that Underwood We probably thought He's missed his chance But he's just gone To another level In the last couple starts
Speaker 6Yeah yeah It's full credit To the Leak family They've done an excellent Job with this horse And obviously It's as much of them Doing a good job with him As it is the constitution Of the horse Because Not every horse Is able to handle What this horse has Been able to Absorb And deliver And it's not done yet Obviously They've got ambitions Of going to Champions Day Next week And there's still Maybe just One more Back home Just for good measure Just to go And beat up One of the locals And say hey I might not have been here But you're still not Winning the Northerly But that would be A great race Seeing if Jenny Goes there Seeing Jenny Rip along On a good three Hard to run Down track And see The Fremantle Doctor The Fremantle Doctor Come in and see him Absolutely slingshot Off the bend Yeah that's something That you would rather That you would want To be there for So Perth is heating up Obviously, Flemington is front and center, but hashtag West is best. It's not far away. It's not far away, and it's going to be a great carnival. Is it the Guineas this weekend? No. Or is it a couple of weeks away? It's a couple of weeks away, but all the good horses are back.
Speaker 5I think it's the main lead-up for the Guineas.
Speaker 6Yeah, it's the lead-up. There's a Placid Arc prelude and stuff this week. So everything's sort of still just being going. But, yeah, the last couple of weeks have been good there. Yeah, you and I love having a bet there, Ben. It's a very good place to bet. It's very fair. You know, the pool of horses is very much like Hong Kong. It's just a great place. It's very much.
Speaker 5Wasn't Pikey winning that Cox Plate very much like watching him in WA? The way he just rode it so cold, came with the last run, and just knew he had the horse under him.
Speaker 6But, see, this is one for you especially. Like, his defeats this campaign have been when they've ridden him too close. And I know Bot doesn't believe in this stuff, but there's a case to be made. You let this horse just drop out and just leave him alone. His turn of foot is unbelievable. If he's ridden like that, he was probably circumstantially ridden too close in a Caulfield Cup, gets beaten a length and a half.
Speaker 5I think it's pace-related, but also where.
Speaker 6You've just got to ride him comfortably. If you ride him comfortably, his turn of foot is unbelievable. And I think that's shown. In his defeats, he's been ridden too close.
Speaker 5In the Turnbull and the.
Speaker 6And Pikey's had the last laugh. He said, don't try and critique me on how I need to ride this horse. I know how the horse needs to be ridden. And he's been right.
Speaker 5Yeah, for sure. Hats off to Pikey. He's been able to get a really genuine tempo to aim at in that Turnbull and in that Cox Plate. And obviously both of those races, being at Flemington, has been a big help to him. But I think at the end of the day, hats off. He's clearly the best 2,000-meter horse currently in Australia. And he's proven that twice now. A quick question for you boys. I know this is all pub chat and who the fuck really knows. If the Cox Plate was at Moonee Valley, does he win it?
Speaker 8No. No. There you go.
Speaker 5No. You just got to take your opportunity. Might have been the only Cox Plate that'll be run at Flemington.
Speaker 6If the Cox Plate was at Flemington, if the Cox Plate was at Moonee Valley, the way that race unfolded, Birdman would have won. Or Eliana. Birdman would have won. Yeah, I reckon Birdman. There was a bit of chat that, oh, he was a bit unlucky. He had fucking 300 meters. He had the best run of all time. That's exactly how it needed to be ridden. He's got a short sprint off a hot tempo. Oh. And that's just how it was. Max Payne over here. I know it hurts you a lot, but if you've backed Birdman, that's exactly how you wanted him ridden. And he just wasn't good enough.
Speaker 7No, no. He was beaten on his merits.
Speaker 6He just doesn't finish off on a strong 2,000-meter tempo. He was still very good.
Speaker 8What do you mean he doesn't finish off? He was beaten half a league. He was fine.
Speaker 5100%. Cosmic Crusader was finishing harder, but he was still fine. I thought Eliana was home at the 400.
Speaker 7Yeah. When they raced past. When she pulled out. When she raced past me, it looked like Eliana was going straight by him, and then Cosmic Crusader loomed up. Is there something
Speaker 5to say that Eliana was half a run short, or a run short in this Cox Plate, and just has sort of peaked on a run late? Who the fuck's just kicked that? That was me by accident.
Speaker 6They've been playing catch-up this whole preparation.
Speaker 7Yeah. It's just absolutely mental that they're not running in the Melbourne Cup.
Speaker 5It's absolutely mental that she hasn't run in a Caulfield Cup. She is the best 2,400-meter horse in the country. She beat the boys in a. Derby by five lengths. Yeah. And then she beat the boy on her in a Tancred. She ran. Running away. She ran the 106 weight for age. There is not another horse in Australia that can run 106 weight for age over 2,400 meters. Yeah. And they've left two Caulfield Cups on the table. It is insipid behavior.
Speaker 7It is. I, like, I think she's, she's gone as pretty much as well as she possibly can over 2,000 meters, but she just needs that. You know, she needs, she's a stayer. She needs further to, to hit that next.
Speaker 6Do we want to speak about the elephant? Elephant of the room?
Speaker 7Number. So how bad deal is this?
Speaker 6Don't tell that about Jono. I know, I know there's been a few people that have defended what Adrian Bott said post-race. And maybe he said this. Oh, this is a lot of shit. Maybe he said this just in the heat of the moment. But regardless, this is a, this is a race that has eluded Gay Waterhouse, which is arguably the best female trainer Australia's ever seen. One of the best trainers. We've seen her dad was a superstar before my time. They've obviously been playing catch up with his horse. There's, there's no debating that, but don't feed us shit. Don't, don't, don't just tell us how it is. Don't polish it.
Speaker 5Yeah. He's not going on that.
Speaker 6A polished shit is still shit. At the end of the day. The race, the race shapes have been
Speaker 5against him, but he's performing well below his best.
Speaker 6For them to come out and say, oh, he'll improve. And what would the Cox plates a bridging run? Are you taking the piss?
Speaker 5And they said they were happy with the run.
Speaker 6You can. Not be possibly happy. I think he got beat five or six.
Speaker 5Yeah. You can't be happy with that. Like he said, he sat near a fast tempo and a queen Elizabeth and ran one Oh seven weight fridge and absolutely destroyed Lindeman and autumn glow. He just simply hasn't been that horse's preparation. And he is still a bull. He still got his, uh, that's fine.
Speaker 6We all get a bit, we all get a bit excited and we all think about things from time to time, but if that's what it is, well, what do you think about Nick? If we all get distracted and think about. Other things like not mine, not mine, not on the job, like the task at hand, like trying to try and put two words together right now and just deliver. Anyway, that's a bit of a piss take it is. I agree. And you know, you just know, you know, what's, you know, what some bullshit's going to happen. He's probably going to come out with the champion stakes or probably go to Hong Kong and win over there.
Speaker 5More moderate tempo on a champion. So he probably wins. Fair dinkum. You couldn't back him up. We can, we've stolen money unless you got like double figures.
Speaker 6Yeah. I don't know. Let's go through some other, maybe it didn't, maybe it didn't help with land legend and, and light infantry man didn't help the right. He didn't want to be there. I wanted him to be where like Chael Wolf was, but it was the best of the on speakers. Yeah. But if you're still beaten five, like fair dinkum.
Speaker 5Yeah. Oh, great. Uh, Juju Kibo was really good, but he earns his way into a Melbourne cup. Yep. He was good in the Metro. I don't know how this horse didn't get a run in a Caulfield cup. That's a tragedy.
Speaker 6Can we just figure it? Can we just explain for a second how he paid $8.50? What's what was doing there?
Speaker 5Yeah. He's gone around way too big a price in the end.
Speaker 6I think again, they just backed this bloody O'Brien horse.
Speaker 7I think that was one of the biggest goes. I think I have ever seen like three 70.
Speaker 5Didn't it? It was like $6 earlier in the week.
Speaker 6Yeah. It was $14, $14, $14 international. They haven't backed is the one that's Julie pissed in. And it's a cup favorite. They've backed every other international and every other race. And they've gone. I'm like a busted.
Speaker 5I looked at it's 4,000 meter form and I'm like, surely, surely this thing just doesn't have a turn of foot.
Speaker 7Yeah. Well, that's what I thought. And you know, it's been 14 and I think it was about six bucks on race morning. And then in the half hour leading into the race, it was just backed off the boards and it starts $3.80. One of the biggest guys I think I've ever seen in my life and, um, did absolutely nothing.
Speaker 5So obviously, obviously someone's got some big ratings for this horse overseas.
Speaker 7Well, it's probably just an owner. That's got a shit load of money. And maybe, I don't know, maybe, but you would
Speaker 5have thought to be chiming in that light, there is some bigger sort of syndicates getting involved, but
Speaker 7maybe that there is also that, you know, you, you, you can just back these international blind in, in, in our races, races, and, you know, you turn a profit profit, maybe, you know, Joey O'Brien in Australia, like he'd run it. You know, I'm, I dunno, 20% probably. Yeah. So maybe, maybe that was the thinking that obviously there's the ratings, but you know, I couldn't have him. I, I thought he was, you know, $14 chance because he was a 4,000 meter horse. He's not quick enough. Yeah. And then when Craig got to the front and just, they were literally running 14 seconds walking and, and that was ridiculous as well. Cause I ended up backing, uh, after the wolf and, but he's a horse that needs pace. He like, he, he was beaten in the, um, the metropolitan for a turn of speed and not making excuses for him. I think the right horse one, but what I don't understand the thinking of, of backing the speed off so heavily. And it's also dangerous. Like you, you saw the horses, you know, being, um, checking off heels anyway. I think Pedro was unlucky. Yeah. So it was pinhole. Um, but yeah, I mean, King's Valley literally ran the fastest last 200 meters of the entire meeting, which is a joke for a
Speaker 5Moonee Valley gold cup, a joke. Anyway. Um. We see
Speaker 6he had an end of prep run the day that we all stopped.
Speaker 7No, I don't know if he had an end of prep run. It was just the worst track I've ever seen it been to go today. We'll revisit that. It was a one lane highway. Absolute far surfing
Speaker 5bird was very good. Um, I think early in the week, like you sort of looked at their price, $2 70 in a crystal mile. She's very short. She ended up getting out to beyond $3 at one stage. I had something on just right place, right time and a good ride. I think she's unbeaten five out of five at a mile at a mile.
Speaker 7Yep. Um, astral flame led this race at a quite a slow pace. The visually it looked like they were rolling along because you know, the, the field was really strung out, but it was just that they. Just let astral flame and surf and bird have the easiest time of it in the lead. And surf and bird only had to, you know, she's still, she's still run really well. She's home in, in some good time, but Buckaroo was a certainty beat.
Speaker 5I know some boys who took double figures, Buckaroo all in like seriously.
Speaker 7What? I mean, James McDonald rode the horse. He's the best jockey in the world and he should have won this race by a length, maybe length and a half.
Speaker 5Um, Stuart's report says hampered at the start, but geez, I mean, he's typically slow away, but a lot of leather.
Speaker 7It's not necessarily JMAC's fault, it's a collective, you know, why was there Why was there no incentive to be closer to this horse who's, you know, two to one on speed? And, you know, I just, um, yeah, I mean, when you're going that slow, they know that, you know, these good jockeys, they have a feel of these things and they know how fast they're going. Why would you let Jordan Childs ride the favorite to settle outside the leader when they're going that slow? It just, um, yeah, Buckaroo
Speaker 5probably should have won if he was just a length closer in the run. Yep. Anyway, um. Buckaroo just did Buckaroo things. The other good winner on the day was Smooth Chino down the straight who ran to 98 weight for age. He proves that straight track form is definitely a thing after running second to Skybird the start prior. Marzu runs them along and what a horse he's been bought.
Speaker 7Well, that was another thing. Marzu ran them along. Yes, himself. He was slightly ahead of standard, but the rest of them were five lengths off him. Oh, well, um.
Speaker 6Our extra galactic got far so, so, so far back. Yeah. It was just Jaymack.
Speaker 7Yeah. She was just
Speaker 6giving way too much to do.
Speaker 5A couple stinkers, you reckon, from Jaymack?
Speaker 7Yeah, it wasn't. Just, just pace wise, like these, these horses were so far back for what the pace actually was. They should have been so much close. Like Marzu ran really well, but they should have been at his girth, not five meters back. Yeah. You know, so, um, Smooth Chino, you know, he got him on the line.
Speaker 6When he won that race in Sydney, sometimes I just wonder what happens in these races. Like, fair dinkum. Like, look. Look, he made them all look stupid before the Everest and he's nearly done it again. Hmm. Jigsaw is just not a straight horse. Yeah. Without blah, moan, trumpet. Is that the only thing? That's, well, Cindy, Cindy said it was basically circumstantial that they had to go there. Yeah. It's a lack of programming. They didn't want to. Yeah. You can never send him there again. You could take, you could take the thought that he's a different horse now, but he's, as I said last week on the podcast, his biggest asset is getting to the front, racking, stacking, and launching off the bend, and he, he, horses just can't do that up the straight. He, he lost his biggest advantage.
Speaker 5Yeah. And he was a massive drifter late in betting.
Speaker 7But he still had to be fast. And he wasn't, he wasn't fast on Saturday.
Speaker 6Yeah, but I think, I think you just completely forgive that because his biggest asset wasn't his, was his biggest Achilles heel on the weekend.
Speaker 5And you know, the biggest thing with Jigsaw is he's going to go to Cranbourne next start in a meteorite. Oh, well, he'd be, he'd be immoral there.
Speaker 6Yeah. I mean, I, I just think. Why are they going to Hong Kong now? Why are they not going to WA?
Speaker 5I think they're going to wait for WA and go to the, um, go to the Quokka again in the
Speaker 6autumn. But they're going to race to Kangaroo. Oh, that's not happening. I don't think that's happening. That was just a junk little bit of journalism.
Speaker 5Oh, I, I haven't heard for sure that's happening, but I know he's going to the meteorite next start again to defend his crown. Pop-up races, huh? I think Ray, I think Ray Magnerio is actually looking for 1400 meters. The best win that he's showed us in recent preparations is that gold rush. Yeah. Over in WA where he beat an unlucky cosmic crusader. Yeah. I think he's a horse who just wants a little bit further now. Anything else, Bob?
Speaker 7Caddington won well. God bless him.
Speaker 5What was the story? There was a good story there, I think.
Speaker 6Yeah. So the owners. Geordie Child's got nine meetings on aroused. How, how does that happen? We get nothing out of the Caulfield cup, but Geordie gets another one for his horse running
Speaker 7out. The. What a world. Uh, the owners, um, uh, it's like for breast cancer.
Speaker 5Oh, okay. That's why they got the pink colors.
Speaker 7Yep. Yeah. So it's the breast cancer. Colors. And yeah, one, one really was massive drifter. I ended up, um, having a bet, but I, I angels fury was off the map and I don't, I don't know why. I think it was because, because of it, it was, you know, gate one and, and, and, and the, they'd seen that there was an advantage to be toward the, um, inside, but yeah, anyway.
Speaker 6They had every possible to weakest.
Speaker 7I just think it's no good to be on.
Speaker 6It should have gone to Cranbourne. Simple.
Speaker 7I think, I think it's a
Speaker 61200, 1100 meter race or a thousand meter race. Yeah. You might find. Oh, well, it was a benchmark 70. Oh yeah. Oh, the Friday night. And they went. Yep. Yep. Yep.
Speaker 5Um, what was some good performances in Sydney? Remind me. Um, Lindeman was a good winner of the Craven plate. He was actually my best bet. Your boy's best bet. Let us down in the podcast multi last week. So thanks for that. Ice cool. Probably just got probably, probably a couple excuses. Got caught on the wrong side of the track and he's still doing a few things wrong.
Speaker 6Lindeman. Back it up. Um, Oaks day.
Speaker 5Easy. Uh, Lindeman. Lindeman was okay. He's still not running anywhere near his sort of best figures, but he was good enough to lead at an average tempo and just kick away yet again. They've just handed it to him yet again here. So that was interesting. Proxima Deo ran to 98.5 in the spring champion. But can they beat her in the, in the Victoria Oaks? Uh, no. No. There you go. So she is a morale. I think she's currently even money with bet three, six. She's a good horse.
Speaker 6She'll be better than Montefiglio. I thought this.
Speaker 5Is that is a big call.
Speaker 6Well, Montefiglio could win an Oaks. So let's revisit this. She'll go one up. She'll one up her next Thursday and then we'll revisit this in time.
Speaker 7Montefiglio should have won the Caulfield cup. She couldn't even win an Oaks.
Speaker 6That's how tough she was. Who beat Montefiglio?
Speaker 7Personal. Personal. Damien Oliver. Angel, angel, angels falls or something.
Speaker 5Uh, Lazura. I think this was right of the day by Tommy Berry. On the weekend, Randwick was playing quite up and in with the rail out. I think it was 6m and Tommy from Barry, uh, I think it was 10 decided to push the button, go forward, sit outside, lead, and he was just good enough to hold out infancy. She ran out a little bit in the straight. She wanted to lay out, but it was just a fantastic ride that was full of intent. And sometimes that's not what you always say from Tommy Berry. He likes to sort of just find his feet and go back, but the ride certainly won him the race there. So hats off Tommy Berry, Lazura and Lindemann. And Proxima Deo were very well backed runners on Saturday at Randwick. Right. That is it. Let's get it to Flemington this weekend. It is Derby day as well. Rail stays in the true position. Look, it's been mild conditions over the last couple of days, but the forecast bought four to 20 millimetres of rain on race day. So we could be playing from anywhere, a good three, if the rain didn't come all the way to probably a heavy eight, if it all came.
Speaker 7Yeah, it's handy to, when we're doing a podcast on, uh, Wednesday night, um, yeah, I mean, what can you do? What do we do?
Speaker 5What's the wind doing?
Speaker 7Yeah, maybe. Um, yeah. Bracing at Flemington. It's it's I'm so excited. How good is Derby day?
Speaker 5I, I, I'm very excited as well. We need to hit back. Um, it's certainly been, it's certainly been a couple of weird weeks for me. I would be doing my form for at least a soft track. I think. If you split the middle, I think if heavy, if heavy eight's the worst we can hope for and good four is the best you can hope for, I think I'm going to be doing my form for around a soft six and just hope, hope like hell that we don't actually get 20 in the space of race time. Race number one is the Carbine Club Stakes. It is over 1600 metres for our three-year-olds and I do believe it is a group three race, set weights and penalties. Chris Waller has made this race his own in recent times. Unhinged. Unhinged is a favourite for Chris Waller, $4.20 from High Falls, $4.80. Kong of the World has been seven into $5.50 today. Star of Macedon, $8.50 and the Roaring Sun is, Waller's got three in this race. He's also got Glenorchy, $8.50 for the Roaring Sun and tens for Glenorchy. Bet365, they are doing our races one to three. You get a stake back offer. So if you missed a winner, you get a bonus bet back to opt in. You just got to go to the rewards page and activate it, but take it away.
Speaker 7This race has. Become a race of finding which Waller horse is the most progressive. And this year, James McDonald rides unhinged. Who's a half to hinged. And, uh, one of my, one of the greatest ever memories of, of cup week is when hinged won the, um, the matriarch.
Speaker 5Oh my God. I got $11 all in.
Speaker 7Oh, that was one of my favourites. I was down in the, on the front lawn and roared that one home. That was so good. Oh, amazing. Now bet five bucks too. Oh, she just wanted to win that. Oh, she stuck her neck out. Didn't she? For something, for something she didn't want to do. Very often lifted her.
Speaker 5Remember when Buckaroo and hinged ran one, two.
Speaker 7And I backed Buckaroo that day. That was like the last time I ever bet in Sydney.
Speaker 5Is that the last time Buckaroo won a race?
Speaker 7Oh, nah, it's not quite. He won it.
Speaker 5He won an Underwood with Joe Marrera two years ago.
Speaker 7Joe Marrera, it was probably the last time Joe Marrera won a race too.
Speaker 5Come on, he dominates in Hong Kong, maybe in Australia.
Speaker 7Um, yeah, uh, look, I think this race is really tricky. Um, I don't really want to bet to be honest. The Roaring Suns, I think, I think is the really progressive one. Um, High Falls is a really, one by seven lengths last out of Warrnambool. Uh, we'll let it a slow pace and just bolt it in.
Speaker 5This race is easy. You just throw out the form guide and back wallah.
Speaker 7Well, there's. There's three of them. Which one are you backing?
Speaker 5Oh, just, just take $2 for one of them to win.
Speaker 7Just pack them all. Oh, well that's, that's probably better advice than I'll give anyone. So just do that punters.
Speaker 6Nico, anything? Uh, I've had something on the Roaring Sun, but no, no real firm confidence. The Roaring Sun, the Rising Sun, something in that.
Speaker 5If you only back one of the wallah runners, there's every chance. One joint won't disappoint me. You're going to get it wrong. Race number two is the Vanity group three for the Phillies, 1400 meters and Regal Ambitionie, our $2.30 favorite in from $2.50 pin up Sheila has been a little bit of a drifter today. 4:25. out to $4.60, does get. Wink is on for the first time. And also James McDonald takes over. Oh, and Aria, $11 into $6. She wasn't that short in the all-in betting. Sorry, she wasn't that long in the all-in betting. So $11 into $6 is a decent move. Afari's been $7 out to $9. And Blue Dream's been met with some good support as well. Off the debut win, $19 into $13.
Speaker 6Nick, I'll let you go first. This looks probably one of the better bets of the carnival, I would have thought. Regal Ambition looks close to a good thing to me. I think she trucked into the race like she was just going to win the 1,000 guineas before she hit the Caulfield wall. And, yeah, the step back to 1,400 meters here is only a positive. Got to carry that man on top. That's probably our biggest negative.
Speaker 5Oh, come on.
Speaker 6In a race full of horses with limited potential, she looks a clear standout. For me, so she is my best bet on the program. And, spoiler alert, she might be part of something later on. But number one, Regal Ambition, Nicko and Mick D, what could possibly go wrong? It just really warms my heart. What, me and Mick D aligning?
Speaker 5Mick D, who's two from his last 50, Nick McWalter has just gone, today's the day that we're going to.
Speaker 6What could possibly go wrong? He could completely fuck my weekend race too. One o'clock. One o'clock. One o'clock. Saturday could be cast.
Speaker 5Gee, it must be a moral if Nicko is chiming in with Tricky Micky. I think she will win. Tricky Micky, all right. She's a mile back to 1,400 meters, but I reckon she's got a bit on these. I mean, she started $3.70 favorite in a thousand guineas. The track bias was against her. It was playing inside that day. Saintly Dancer was too good yet again. Ice Lady sat second and they sort of just ran the quinella, but she was finishing off hard in third. If we do get a soft track, that shouldn't be any worries for her. She did win on soft ground going back to Sandy on a couple of starts ago. It wasn't heavy by any means, but it was definitely in the five to six range. I just think she's going to get back probably midfield from barrier seven and round them up. I think she's just a class above these and I took $3 all in. Pinup Sheila can definitely improve. She had a bit of a wide run last time around and now gets J-Mac, but yeah, I might have a saver on her. But I think she's running for second.
Speaker 7Is there any worry that she's going to be last? I think she could be last year. That's, that's the issue for me.
Speaker 5Well, I checked the wind. It's not like we have a strong southerly or anything. I think it's a westerly, north-northwesterly. Yeah, but if they go
Speaker 7slow enough, like that doesn't look to be a massive amount of speed on. And if they get an easy time, she can't run, you know, 31 flat. So, uh, look, I think she's the best horse in the race. But she's not quick away. And I think she's going to be better over a mile and maybe a mile and a quarter in time. Um, I'm probably like, I've marked her about the price she is. So I'm not, I'm not discrediting her at all. It's just that, um, you know, do I want to be launching into this three year old filly in race two of the Flemington carnival, um, over 1,400 meters when she's going to be better over further in time. I look, it's not a, not a betting race for me. I like, I like blue dream in the race. Yeah. But, but it's been, it's been hammered early. It's been well backed and it's probably the right price now, but they do not go quicker over the last 400 meters than what it did at Canton last time on debut. So really nice horse. If you get a little bit of a drift blue dream, I'll probably back it. But you know, if you get like sort of two, six year regal ambition, um, I could chime in. It's just that I'm a little bit worried about what the, uh, the pace will be like for it.
Speaker 5Yeah. Race number three is the wakeful sags group three, sorry, group two for. The three-year-old Phillies and ice lady. The runner up in the thousand guineas has been $3 40 into two 90 with bet three, six, five today from DMS, $4 80 ran forth in that group on feature. Your color, $7 50 thaw is $9. Your color and the thaw have drawn the gates, 19 and 18. They'll come in a few if emergencies drop out, but still it is wide, wide sumac is $13. And Fringilla is sixteens. Interesting. Old race spot. Obviously one of the, uh, main lead ups to the Oaks every year, um, with horses that will be backing up, but which one of them will stay the 2000 best?
Speaker 7Well, this race is, is interesting because obviously it is the lead into the Oaks and so many of these, uh, have drawn wide and, and might already be in the Oaks field. And, um, they might be content with just going back and running and, you know, their, their, their, their goal might be just to run the fastest last 400 meters of the race. And I like, you know, Fawa, uh, York. You know, they're both Chris Waller horses. I, if I was at the back, if I was a gambling man, which I am, they're going to be out the back and they're going to be running on. And there doesn't look to be a massive, you know, it's not going to be a race where the race inverts. And I think you're going to be wanting to back on pace horses. I don't like the favorite who will be on pace. I think it's, I think it's more of a miler and it might, you know, 2000 meters might see it out, even though it is by Maurice, I think, um, a mile and a quarter is probably, uh, a little bit. Far for it. I think D'Armas should be favorite, um, which might be, you know, you know, it's, it's, it's a lot bigger than I think D'Armas is the one that I'll back in the race. I'm also going to back in the key Tria, who, uh, as always seemed like a, an Oaks Philly and, um, ran on from the back of the field at Corford last time. I think it can settle a bit closer. I'm also going to have something on. So Royal, um, Uh, who was comes out of the same race as well. And, um, you know, it looks like a Philly for a staying distance and one more girl with a purpose. Um, who, uh, finished its race off a Warrnambool. So those are some horses that I think might be able to settle Ford of midfield and, uh, a race there, you know, be able to stay 2000 meters as well.
Speaker 5So, sorry, just in
Speaker 7summary, D'Armas, D'Armas, Nikita, Nikita, so Royal, so Royal and girl with a Pearl and, you know, two of those are 80 to one. They'll probably start like two hundreds or something. So I'm sure, uh, you know, you're not, you're not spending too much. I wouldn't have thought there you go.
Speaker 5So we've got a second favorite there and then we've got a few at, um, a very, very big price. Let's move on to race number four. And this is the rising fast stakes. Niko rising fast was famous for running fast, winning all three in the same
Speaker 7year is the answer to that question.
Speaker 6He's the only horse I look like a story. And do you know, that's why I asked you, why would you ask me? I don't know.
Speaker 5You reckon I was going to know now, but what year was it? 1955. It was the only horse in history to win the Caulfield cup, Cox plate and Melbourne cup, all in the same year. You'd think he'd have a staying race named after him.
Speaker 7It's like follow up. Who has a 1500 minute Phillies race.
Speaker 5It's a disgrace. Anyway, we've got to get better at naming our races. Surely, surely you can sort of couple it with the fact that he won from 2000 to 3,200. We get a race. 2000 plus anyway, straight race, 1200 meters. It is a group three handicap in Napoleonic. Who gets the. Blinkers on for the first time is our $4 60 favorite. You can get $5 50 with a little bit boost there from Hanky alpha, who has been seven into five today. The New Zealand, she was bloody impressive. Last time, golden strand, $8 50 Kings effort, eight out to 10. He's a jewel acceptor. What? What's the other races in?
Speaker 7Are you talking about King Zephyr? He's in the 1400 meter rise in the 14 as well.
Speaker 5Damien Oliver and a gallon. Son's been 17 into 11 tricky race. The starting point is definitely. The favorite though. But Napoleonic. Yeah.
Speaker 7Gets the blinkers on for the first time. It also gets J Mac. J Mac's written the horse four times, three wins and a third. So he certainly gets the best out of him. He's been set for the race. He's had a 34 days between runs since the Manukato. Look, this looks, he's raised up. I think he's about the right price. He went up way too big. I didn't see those odds. I think Gallant's son has been one that's been campaigned a little weirdly to be honest. First up in the Manukato and then back to a thousand last started just, he's not. He's not a thousand meters. He's not fast enough for that. Back here. I think he's slightly too big and, um, I actually, you know, if the rain doesn't come and we're on a good to soft five hedged is, is just so much better than a $26 chance. He's he's a, he's a good like hanky alpha. I know one by six lengths at Flemington and it will, it will be suited by a heavy, uh, you know, wet, wet track if, if the rain does come, but it's the same price. It's like the polyonic who is, you know, is performed at group one level and, you know, being competitive in these races, multiple group one placed, you know, I, I think like, you know, I use weight for age ratings, but sometimes these ones just, they're just, this all should be 20 to one. Should it not like it's coming out of a
Speaker 578 or something hanky alpha 20
Speaker 7to one, I think
Speaker 5she's a chance.
Speaker 7I mean, I, I not know. I have it $16. I'm not, I'm not, I think, I think it's a chance. I just, I just don't, I just don't see how it's $5. It just seems incredibly short to me.
Speaker 5I don't see how she won by six last start running away and it only rated to 93. I don't know. It was big. Nothing. Yeah. Um, there's been a bit of form out of it. There's been two winners.
Speaker 7Yeah. I, I think I'm also going to back Jimmy Ricard that there that day at Flemington, there was some massive, um, margins throughout fields and because it was such a testing day, such a bot bed fitting. Yeah. He had about a year off the The scene, um, was well beaten on a, on a wet track. That's fine. 28 days between runs. Kirimo have it there. His best is just about the best in the race. Almost. Not, not quite, but.
Speaker 6Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. At the weights. I'll give you the chance to retract that statement. If you wish. We can cut that out, Jono. He wants to retract that. We'll stop, pause, cut out.
Speaker 7All right. No, that, no, that, that was, that's wrong. But like at the weights, at the weights.
Speaker 6We'll leave that in there because he's acknowledged that he's wrong.
Speaker 7Well, he's 80 to one and, and two starts ago, he was, he was, you know, five lengths behind Tentaris in a cool more stud stakes. You know, he's pretty much.
Speaker 6If his dad wasn't his dad, he wouldn't have his two best mates. I can guarantee you.
Speaker 7Yeah. I think at 80 to one, he's a free swing and you can have, you can have something on him and he's, he's a horse that I think can improve, you know, dynamically like that.
Speaker 5He's a free swing, is he?
Speaker 7You get your money back. Well, weren't you? I was saying before. It was one to three. This is race four.
Speaker 5Oh, whatever. It's not a free swing, but it's not an expensive swing.
Speaker 7Yeah. It's not an expensive swing.
Speaker 5Um, look, I think you have a, it seems like, it seems like you should be getting a much bigger price, but I think if the rain does come, she, she is a huge chance. I love what she did last time around, but, um, Napoleonic is just clearly the one to beat. He's just got to carry the 59 and a half, which should be fine.
Speaker 6A little side quest that we didn't speak about earlier. Speaking about doing your parents proud. Jimmy Ricard is probably not doing dad proud.
Speaker 5I'm invincible by
Speaker 6the way, listeners, but Malek today race for, he would absolutely be doing mom proud. This is Ben. This is a horse that we're going to back in a grand annual in two years time out of St. Jean out of Regina Chelly. Oh, one of, one of the best jumpers. Like he's bred to be a very slow horse, but you know what? You can't breed bot. You can't breed heart and he's got lots of it. He was off the camera. He was today and his mom would have been, his mom would have been so proud of him and his uncle. Yep. Algo hood was Algo hood. What a, what a champ he was, but his mom. Superstar and full circle moment. Johnny Allen won the two grand annuals on Regina Chelly and today road and St.
Speaker 5John is the sire of half yours. Yes. There you go. So some, some, uh, some
Speaker 6interesting, uh, bloodlines. So hopefully he goes jumping next year and he could be a great annual horse in years to come, but this is. Maybe he was on them.
Speaker 5This is the only racing podcast in Australia that we could be halfway through a Derby card and Nico starts talking about jumpers and Warrnambool.
Speaker 6Oh, that's just, it's a full circle moment. It was missed today. A lot of people wouldn't have known that, but do yourselves a favor. If you want to, you want to go watch a superstar racehorse, go and watch Regina Chelly's highlights at Warrnambool.
Speaker 5Regina Chelly. Trained by the great. Tell you what.
Speaker 6DK. Yeah. Written by the great JA.
Speaker 5Um. I'll tell you what Hanky alpha would be hashtag hard to beat in a Wongoom track.
Speaker 6See Ben, I like you thinking could be, could be on Wongoom trial.
Speaker 5She could be. Let's move on to race number five. And, um, it's named after the goat, Damien Oliver, 1400 meter group two handicap. Is he still the goat? Yes or no? For now. Is he still the goat right now?
Speaker 6J Mac won't be called the goat until he's finished racing, but J Mac's gone past it. He's already gone past him.
Speaker 7Yeah. Yeah. He's J Mac's the best.
Speaker 6J Mac's already. The goat. Wow. Wow. You know, it pisses me off. Is it Chad? That's Wayne. He's loyal. Listen to the racing previews and people try and say that back in the day, there used to be like 20 J Macs. Like J Mac. It's so much like the competition that J Mac's got now, back in the day of Ollie and Bademan and co Cassidy. Was there such a, a, a Mick Dittman, all those blokes. It was just such a much, a stronger jockey room. Well, there was five blokes, the quality of J Mac. Yeah. That to me is just a cop out, you know, J Mac is J Mac cause J Mac is so much fucking better than anyone.
Speaker 5This is a good conversation. I feel like sport is always evolving and athletes are constantly getting better. Have you ever like Donald Bradman, right? He's the best cricketer of all time. One of the best sportsmen of all time. Have you ever gone back and watched some of his tapes? He looks like a park cricketer. His technique looks horrendous, but obviously he was dominating in that time, but you compare Ricky Ponting, Steve Smith. The way they bat compared to Don Bradman back then. I know, I know he was using bloody chopsticks for a, for a cricket bat, but still it's, it's, it's, it's interesting to compare.
Speaker 6Well, I suppose the golf talk, like Nicholas and Tiger, a lot of that chat is something that I'm probably familiar with. So yeah, it's, it's all fascinating.
Speaker 5It's like comparing Rod Laver.
Speaker 6I used to say, oh, Jack Nicholas used to hit it this far with the old golf ball, with the old driver, then Tiger hit it this far with the new staff.
Speaker 5Like. Sport is always evolving and changing, but I feel like it's, it's constantly changing for the better. So I feel like a lot of like the recency bias in me sort of feels like JMAC would have, would have most people's measure.
Speaker 6The golf example is very, is probably prevalent to this. Like Tigers like JMAC and the old jockeys are like what they were with Nicholas because there was Nicholas, Faldo, Gary Player.
Speaker 5And obviously balls have gotten better.
Speaker 6Yeah, technology, that's all, that's all sport, but like, I don't know, I just think, I think, I think it's an old person thing, to be honest. Like it's just easy to say, oh, back in my day, things were so much different. Yeah, maybe. People just don't want to come to the, come with the times.
Speaker 5There's always going to be a recency bias in the younger generation and us, and there's always going to be a bias in them that think their jockeys were the best. But yeah, it's hard to imagine a better jockey than, um, well then the career that JMAC has had. JMAC could finish with 200 group ones. More. Yeah. A hundred percent. Uh, race number five, the Damien Oliver. And speaking of another goat, Warnie, Shane Warn is at the top of betting the Spin King $5.50 from Pericles. Jesus, we've, this is a miss. This is a miss lads. It went up $16. It's now $6.50. Second favorite, Persian Spirit's been 10 into $6.50, Privateye $8, Steparty $8.50 for King Rick McIntosh and King Zephyr. The jewel acceptor is $9. Shout out to Rick and the crew. Yeah. Good luck boys. But this is, this is tough, bot.
Speaker 7Absolutely spewing that I missed the price on, um, Pericles. He's finally got to,
Speaker 5he's finally got to
Speaker 7$1,400. Just an absolute miss and a half. Cannot believe it. What was he all in? Oh, not all in it.
Speaker 6He opened. He wasn't that big all in, was he? No, he wasn't that big all in. He opened $7.11, was he? $7.11 maybe, yeah. Cause we were trying to figure out who JMAC was going to ride the other day. He might've been $8 even, $8 or $11. Yeah, cause Privateye was about, uh. Like Braden. How'd
Speaker 5you open Pericles $16?
Speaker 6Let's not talk. Let's not talk about that.
Speaker 7That's Squibb. Ah, miss.
Speaker 6Anyway. Good boost this week for us on the multi, hopefully. He should be counting his lucky stars. We've lost the last eight or something.
Speaker 7Yeah. We're still up though. We'll get those stats later.
Speaker 6But hey, don't let the truth get in the way. We won a good, we won a good price this week. Good story. Not a good truth.
Speaker 7Very hard race. This race is always, it's always a great race, this one. It's, um, a good collection of. Is it? $1,400. Yeah, it's a great race. Betting race. Um.
Speaker 6Just a bunch of horses that all like to take turns.
Speaker 7Yep. The best. Ah, look, I couldn't, I couldn't probably have a bet in this race.
Speaker 6A few one-game types in this race.
Speaker 7Ooh. It's the party, if anything.
Speaker 5This race sucks. I went looking for a Persian Spirit. He's probably getting into a, at the right price now, even a bit short. Warnie's been very good, but barrier one just goes me up. Go down the page like.
Speaker 6We're not cheering. We're not cheering for Persian Spirit because he's our one-game horse next year. Once they finally get on his head, 1,200 meters wet tracks, he's go. Are you having a bet? Absolutely not. All right, let's just cheer on Step Hardy then. Yep. Go, Rick. Going to W, he's going to WA.
Speaker 5There you go. Gold Rush may be a good, good bet. Railway as well. Railway, Gold Rush, yep. Yep. We are now getting into the quarter time race six coming up at Flemington. There's only nine on this card, so the quarter is races six to nine. 69 for you, Nicker. Um, we do just have some news that is filtered through on.
Speaker 6You're not old enough to know. You're not old enough to understand it, so sorry.
Speaker 5Who, bot or me?
Speaker 6Both of you.
Speaker 5On the Twittersphere, or X, as Elon has now named it. Stuff you, Elon. It sounded much better as Twitter. And, uh. His Tesla's just stopped in the middle of the road after you said that. Big friend of the show. Trent Mason Elder has reported Godolphin gelding Pericles will stay in Sydney to contest the Russell Bolting Stakes on Saturday. He's also accepting the group to the Damien Oliver at Flemington. Dylan Gibbons will ride him in the 1,300 meter. Group two at Randwick.
Speaker 7So, well, I'm happy that I missed the price. Cause if I had $17, I would not be happy.
Speaker 5That, that is flattening for all those news for the, all those that have taken the price 17 into $6, 50, a huge early go. And now you've lost your early odds. You get your money back, but it doesn't, it doesn't, it's too painful. It doesn't cut it. No. Race number six on cool. More studs. State's day is the group. I'm free to do that again.
Speaker 7The group one for the
Speaker 5three-year-old down the straight is the cool more I knew I'd get bought with that on the next episode has been $3 50 at the $3 80, but he still is the best back runner with bet three, six, five. You can get $4 25 with a bet boost. I will say races four to six, you get your 25% winnings plus boost. And then also in Sydney races, one to six is your 25% plus version. And that'll come online. As of Thursday, St. Goddard has been $6 50 into $4 40. Jeez. Each third up, he gets the blinkers on for Chris Waller, who's won this race on a number of occasions. Think Switzerland, think Home Affairs, help me out. Think anyone else. Japanisma, the gelding.
Speaker 7No, it was a mare. Oh, was it a gelding?
Speaker 5Was it a mare or was it a gelding?
Speaker 7That's a good question. Maybe I always thought it was a mare because it wore pink colors, but it might have been a gelding.
Speaker 6Let's just go hashtag recency bias, 10 tires in Switzerland.
Speaker 7Boom. Yeah. Japanisme.
Speaker 5Oh, this is going to do my head in. I like to go for Japanisme. It was a gelding. I was right.
Speaker 7I always thought it was a, must have thought it was a filly because it wore pink colors. It was an Exosphere that year that it beat?
Speaker 5Sunlight won a cool one, did she not?
Speaker 7Yeah, she won a cool one.
Speaker 5We're going down Japanisma. It beat Kina Ray, Counterattack, Exosphere. Exosphere. Mogador, Delcello. It used to run against Red Kirk Warrior and Nature Strip a couple of times, I reckon, way back when. Anyway. Anyway, snooze fest. So Tono Glow is the filly looking to knock off the boys. She's $5. Natural Fling, also another filly, $6.50. Pembrey is $11, and she's been kept fresh for this. Paradoxium, $17, and Under Focus, $19. Now, the first thing I sort of notice when I look at this Coolmore bot is that a lot of the speed is drawn more towards the outside. Paradoxium in $13. Natural Fling, $8. Pembrey in $9. And maybe even Steel Will will go forward from $10. And that's probably not a bad thing for the next episode, drawn $14 of $14, given they've all drawn on his side. So hopefully they're coming down the middle to the outside.
Speaker 7Yeah, I think he's the favorite. He has to be favorite, I think, in my view. Anyway, he comes off the best last start rating, and just the way he did it and everything about him just suggests that he's going to improve a length or two. And he just seems like. He's just like a Coolmore winner. And, yeah, I cannot price him bigger than 2-1. And you're almost getting 3-1. So he's a great bet. I think Goddard is, you know, in recent times it's been you have three runs and then you peak in the Coolmore. But I just don't get the same, you know, the way that Tentaris came into the race, the way that Switzerland came into the race. I just don't get that same sort of impression. And from him, he just doesn't seem like he's going to explode here. I just think the next episode is the one. And, yeah, I make him bet a 280 chance. And I'm really excited about him. I was actually quite excited to see what price Pembrey would go up because I thought she was excellent first up and then had a slow recovery last time, wasn't great. Put away since and jumped out nicely. And then it goes up $11. I've got it $11. I thought I was going to be, you know, backing it 30-1, because it was off a poor run against Mayer's last start. I feel he's last start. But, you know, right price. The other one I don't mind is Mbube, who was excellent through the 4-2 section. Big price for Lloyd Kenwell. Billy Egan, he's doing some things right at the moment in big races. Yeah, the next episode for me, the main bet, though, he's just a Coolmore winner. You know, he just seems like it. He's not yet. Throw the form book out the window. He just seems like a horse. We may as well not run him.
Speaker 5We may as well not run him and just give the award to the next episode.
Speaker 7He just seems like a horse that would win a Coolmore. And, you know, I think he'll improve two lengths based on that, especially if the rain comes. You know, he won first up in testing conditions. No issue. Now he's second up here, 28 days between runs. Ma, aren't they flying at the moment? Oh, my goodness. You cannot stop them. They are. They are. So, yeah, the next episode for me, he's a really nice bet.
Speaker 5And for me as well. I've taken the $4.25 with the boost. The price would bet $3.65. It is an outstanding price given he was $2.50, $2.80 all in for a large majority of the lead up to this race. You know, first up, we had that little query around whether he wasn't quite trialing and jumping out as well as he did in previous preparations. But he put those sort of worries to bed very quickly. He ran the fastest final 200 meters of the entire meeting running down the natural fling. And he's now 2 for 2 on heavy wet track so far. So that should be no issue if the rain does come. I think he's drawn on the right side. And I think a horse like potentially Sotono Glow, well, she might be drawn on the wrong side, having drawn barrier four away from the main speed. And I think drawing where the speed is could be detrimental to where the best lanes are. So I'm keen on the next episode. St. Gothard and Sotono Glow. Yeah, they can be a danger. But I just think he's going to be a good race. He's getting out to a very backable price. Pembrey, as Bot alluded to, she's definitely best fresh. And that's why they've given her the 53 days between runs. But the market knows it.
Speaker 6Two chances. The next episode deserves to be favorite. Looks the one to beat. I don't think there's any disputing that. He's going to come on. enormously from that first up run. But I labelled this horse the best colt, three-year-old colt, and I don't know if I'm ready to completely forget about him just yet, and that's number five, St. Gothard. The blinkers are on. This is the race. This is the race that Waller always does this with. Just when you want to ride off his horses, they find something on grand final day up the straight in this race. So I think the next episode could be the best horse in this race, but I'm not ready to give up on St. Gothard yet. I think they're the only two winning chances. If my girlfriend, the natural fling, does me dirty here, I'll be proper flat. But I think the two colts are going to rise to the top. I think the way the race is going to be run, they're both going to handle a bit of cut in the track. I just see the speed on the two big colts locking horns at the clock tower, and we've got a grandstand finish. I hope that St. Gothard's there in the fight, but it wouldn't also surprise me very much if the next episode's Tentaurus-like just bolts through, puts a margin on him. This is a race where the dominant horse can stand up and really put a hole in his opposition, and it wouldn't surprise me if that was the next episode. I think it'll be a tight finish if it's St. Gothard. I don't think he's going to reel out a Switzerland type, because I just think the next episode's too good, and he's got too much improvement from first up to be belted. But I think it's a two-bet play, and I think he'll win on the race. I think these two horses are clearly the two best, and the next episode he could be a freak. He could just be panels better than them, but I'm not ready to give up on St. Gothard just yet.
Speaker 5Yeah, but just a quick word on Sotono Glow, who has been awesome this preparation. Where do you see her sort of chances laying? Nine bucks. Yeah, I
Speaker 7think she's a really nice filly, but I just don't see the massive improvement. I could be wrong. She's a really nice filly, but I'll make her $9.
Speaker 5Okay. Well, it is bot's time to shine now, because it is Victoria Derby time. On Derby Day. On Derby Day.
Speaker 7Yeah, thank you.
Speaker 5I will refrain. For the main race. 2,500 meters, group one for the three-year-olds. Racing Victoria, anyone, Asian Patent Committee, anyone out there listening to this podcast, we have to keep this race at 2,500 meters. I'm not as much of a traditionalist as bot in many regards, but if you put this race back to 2,000 meters and put $5 million on it, you can kiss your three-year-olds goodbye in the Cox Plate going forward. We've already been robbed of the four-year-olds in a Cox Plate with the Golden Eagle. And this would be just more self-sabotage. We do not need two versions of the Spring Champion in the space of two weeks. So just keep the Derby to the staying trip. And I think the majority of people will be happy. Stormy Marco, our $4.80 favorite in from $5.50 from Cormier. $6.50 into five. So they're back in both of the Sydney ciders. True Rebel's $8.50. He was $4.50 in and just about favorite for this race at one stage. King Snits is $12.00. And Machete, a bit of support for the Kieran Maag gallopage. But $15.00 into $13.00. He's also got Vallis and Skewer at $15.00 as well. But you think this is a race in two.
Speaker 7I mean, these two horses have been my Derby horses since the JJ Atkins. I'm not trying to like-- but I've said it to you and I've said it to everyone. I think these two horses have been the two Derby horses since the JJ. They were in the Spring Champion. I was praying that both of them would be here on Derby Day. We've taken the double.
Speaker 6We've taken these two into Proxima Deo.
Speaker 5We've still got good prices. Don't worry about that.
Speaker 6No, I don't have a good price Proxima Deo thanks to Yellow Rising.
Speaker 7Yeah, look, I just think they're just-- the Sydney form is so much better. The Victorian form has just been so, so bad. And these two-- like, it was probably an average to slightly better than average Spring Champion. Komiya made the pace up on speed. and he's just going to be there again. Some of the main dangers, Stormy Marco, True Rebel, Machete, True Tone, these horses, they're drawn wide, and the 2,500-meter start at Flemington is one that can be difficult because they turn so quickly. They've only got about 100 meters to the first turn, so you have to really make a decision where are you going to go forward or are you going to go back before the gates even open? So it can be tricky, and the races can be won and lost, literally in the first sort of 50 meters of a race. So I think Cormier, he strides like a derby horse. The reason these horses have been my derby horses for so long is they've been racing in 1,400-meter and 1,600-meter races since they were two, and they've always had the stride as if they were going to be mile-and-a-half horses. They're bred to run over this distance. Cormier's by Maurice. His mom won an Oaks and was an excellent run in the Caulfield Cup in 2017, and Stormy Marco from an Irish family by Wooden Bassett. You know, Wooden Bassett in Australia is a sprinting sire, but overseas in Ireland where they breed to that, he gets herdless, so there's no issue there. And I just think they're just so much better, and I find this race really hard to price because if I'm pricing legitimately, I'd mark about six to four each too. I think the price you're getting for these two, you can back them both. I've backed Cormier at much bigger prices, and if Cormier wins, good luck getting me back here. Tops off, Bart. I'll do laps around Flemington.
Speaker 5Can you do a World Cup Aloysius celebration in the Flemington members?
Speaker 7I might get kicked out, but it might be worth it. You might see it. I love the Derby so much, and if they ruin it by Rice, you've got to bet $2,000. $2,000, it'll just ruin it. I heard somewhere that it's the third most wagered upon race in Australia. It's just madness, and this race is so great, and it's honestly my favorite race. I love looking at these horses since they're two to three, getting to a mile and a half. They're here now. These are the two. If one of them doesn't win, I'll be cast.
Speaker 5Get the tissues out, Nico. He's going to blow his load over here. He's going to need more than that.
Speaker 7I'm going to make a comment, and I want to get this on record. I could make myself look completely stupid. Hierarchy, who's to all the top of the market, I think he's a sprinter miler. He can't win, basically. He's $13. I would be so surprised. He's a little horse, and he just drives like a sprinter miler. If he wins the Derby and stays a while, I would be surprised. I make him much bigger than the price he is. Blame the place.
Speaker 5I'm backing those two horses as well. The number one and the number two, Stormy Marco and Cormier. We've backed them in the futures at really nice prices, double figures. If you want to try and get involved in some of these early prices, I do have a tipping app called the Six Day Racing, and you can find it on the Apple App Store or on the Google Play Store for your Android phones. I reckon we're going to be in for a beauty this week, and I'm hoping one of these horses can win the Derby. I love the fact that one of them is going to be on speed, doing his own thing. Taking luck out of the equation, and that is Cormier, drawn low with Jamie Mott, who I think is just a gun booking for a horse like this. And Stormy Marco, well, he'll get back from the wide gate, and he'll be just finishing off the best of just about all of them here. They both ran quite well on the Spring Champion. They both profile like stays, as Bott has said, and their ratings are just a little bit better than the Victorians.
Speaker 6Niko? Yeah, I think the two Sydney horses are the two horses to beat, but, um. Yeah, I don't need to blabber on about it anymore. Bott's covered it all, and, um. Yeah, like, I've taken a position early on Cormier. Not quite the price that everyone else took, but I still took a good position this morning that I'm really happy with, and, um. I'll get involved with Stormy Marco at some point, but, yeah, I think it's only two winning chances.
Speaker 5Yep. Race number eight is the Empire Rose Group One for the Phillies and Mares. I cheekily might have tweeted something. That this, you could get away with calling this the Benchmark 100, maybe outside a few horses. It's not a very strong edition of the Empire Rose, let's be honest. The race has probably been riddled and marred by other feature racing going on, especially north of the border, but, nonetheless, we've got a good favourite in Lady Shenandoah, $2.40 from Surf and Bird. Thank goodness she's backing up here, $4.20. Probably makes the race a little bit better, like the Sydney horses going to the Derby makes that race. Concord Connie, $8.50 into $7.50. Idle Fly has been a drifter. $7.50 out to $9.00, gets Mark Zahra, and unleashing is $10.00. Look, I think they're just going to go an average sort of tempo here with Pillow Fight and Surf and Bird setting up the speed. I think J-Mac is going to try to go forward on Lady Shenandoah and either look for that 1-1 position that we know he loves or maybe get two back and two off the fence. And she's just clearly, head and shoulders, the best horse in this race. She won a Tour. Back last start with just about the top weight in the race, 58 kilos as a mare. It's not easy to do. Only good horses do that. She got the gap. She shot through. She beat Changing Colours, Welcome to the Show, and Mornie. Welcome to the Show since Ramwell. Changing Colours has gone to the paddock. And 1,600 metres is just clearly this horse's optimal trip. They sort of messed around, as Waller can often do, at the sprinting trips for too long. But she's got back out to a mile, and this is just clearly her go. She is the best bet of the day, and possibly the best bet of the carnival. And at set weights, she's just thrown in. If this was a handicap, she'd be giving them 10 to 15 kilos as a 116-rater. Surfing Bird was good last week. I just think $4.20 is way too short. The two horses I've saved on at big odds early is I got $17 for Idle Flyer, who potentially isn't going at her best this preparation, but she was three-wide no-cover. She can be an improver on the backup. And Concord Connie I took $9 for. Also. She's just completely untapped. And getting back to a big track finally, she can run on very well. I think bias and just not handling those tight tracks, Caulfield and Mornington just isn't her thing, and she'll be a big improver here. Just don't know if it's good enough to beat the lady.
Speaker 6Nico? Well, I got my wish. Oh, you got him sacked. I got him sacked. Charlotte listened. Don't. What? Sometimes if you don't ask, you'll never receive. I asked, and I fucking got it. So, bang. Are you happy with Willow? Yep. I think she can beat Lady Shenandoah.
Speaker 5There you go.
Speaker 6I think Lady Shenandoah deserves to be favorite. The confidence-boosting win that she shouldn't have got last time will either spur her on, and she'll just go and win this race again.
Speaker 5What do you mean shouldn't have got?
Speaker 6Oh, well. I think you've.
Speaker 5She was very much a deserving winner. She just wasn't a popular result.
Speaker 8Poor old Changing Colors. She shouldn't have. She shouldn't have taken that gap. J-Max shouldn't have done that. J-Max shouldn't have given her a 15 out of 10.
Speaker 6Changing Colors was stiff. Nico was stiff. Oh, boy. There wasn't any. Yeah, anyway. Yeah, I think I've thought for a long time Con Corn Codding is a group on horse, and I think she gets a perfect opportunity to win a glorified group one on the weekend. I think if Lady Shenandoah is all she's got to beat, as good as Lady Shenandoah has been, she's no world beater. And this is a great race for Concord Connie. So I think there's two winning chances. I'm going to stick fat with my girl Connie. Willow's on. And I'll be having something on Lady Shenandoah as well. Two-bet play. But I'll be cheering Connie. Like no other. She owes me this horse. I've been balls deep twice this preparation, and I've had my balls squeezed and not given back. Jesus. It's almost a galley hopper. So I've felt galley pose beat.
Speaker 5Yeah, I wouldn't cry poor if Charlotte Littlefield and Concord Connie got the win here. I just think it's. They've got the task at hand, don't they, Bob?
Speaker 7Yeah. I mean, she was beat by a purse and pro first half. I mean. Now we're hopefully
Speaker 6going to be ridden properly. I know. I know. I know. I know.
Speaker 7I know. We're okay. I know. That's in the past, and I know she's very, very good. And this is a good opportunity for her. I just think Lady Shenandoah should be shorter. I'm surprised she's not shorter. Yeah, I mean, fourth up, she's, you know.
Speaker 5Then don't be a coward. I'm not. I'm not being a coward.
Speaker 7I'm going to back Lady Shenandoah if the hot price holds. And I'm also going to back Salty Pearl, who was really, really good on top of the pace in the Tour Act, because they went really, really fast and stuck on really well. Gets an excellent opportunity here. I think it's a little bit too big at 20 to 1.
Speaker 5Beautiful. So Salty Pearl and Lady Shenandoah for you. Connie and Lady Shenandoah for Nico. And I'm mostly Lady Shenandoah, but I've got a saver on the 10 and the 2 as well. Race number 9 is the Asahi Super Dry Sprint. Asahi! Flying for fun, our $2.80 favourite in from $3.40 from Bridal Waltz, $5. JJ's Mistruth, $10. They trade the blinkers for visors, which are pretty much the same. just with slits in them. In Karuna, $10, and Nafar has been $15 into $13, a little bit of support there. Now, my starting point with this race is it is race nine on the program. We've got a lot of rain forecast for Saturday. If this gets into the really soft range, like soft seven, proper testing track, my main angle in this race is to be against Flying for Fun, who every time she has been on a track rated worse than a soft seven, I believe it is, she has failed twice on genuine wet grounds. She just doesn't accelerate as well on it. On a dry track, she's got a ripping turn of foot, and she'll just about round these up. But if this is wet, I do think a horse like Bridal Waltz can bounce back, ridden better. She's $5. I think she's going to start shorter than $5, and maybe just looking around the edges, I might have another bet on possibly an Inca Runa or maybe a Gigi's Mistrue for who we know handles soft tracks. I'm not exactly sure what my second bet will be yet, but Bridal Waltz gets her opportunity to bounce back. I don't think the race tempos and race shapes have been suiting her, and I think a soft track, a testing 1100 down the straight with the 55, she does get a big opportunity to bounce back, and a lot of punters will drop off her.
Speaker 7I think generosity is a big price. Big price. Mark Zara rides just, you know, she's been relatively playing this preparation, but she's. She's an excellent horse for the price she is, and look, I agree with Ben. I think flying for fun's a little bit short. Jamek in the last, maybe? I don't know. Yeah, I think it's a bit short. I think Bridal Waltz is entitled to be shorter than what she is, and 450 is my price for Bridal Waltz, and she was playing last. I think it just went too slow. It's hard, really, to make many excuses for her.
Speaker 5She's probably not quite going her best.
Speaker 7She's probably not, but, I mean, she was. Excellent two-back. I mean, at that rating, winning this, you know, beaten by Point Barrow, who's an excellent mare. Yeah, I'll probably back Bridal Waltz and have something on generosity. All right, I might take the $5 right now. She just can't start that price.
Speaker 5Nico? Don't know. Don't know? Happy to move on? Yeah. All right. Let's move on. We're going to go up to Sydney. I think we're only doing. Let me just check what you've sent. We're only doing the two races in Sydney. The first of those is the Russell-Balding Stakes, and just a quick weather. Let me just get a quick Randwick weather update. We could have a little bit of rain at Randwick on Saturday as well. They're sort of each way betting at the moment. It's 27 degrees, but an 80% chance of 1 to 10. Who knows how much that actually comes. Sydney, because it's a coastal town, I think they mess it up even more in Sydney because those storm. Those storms come over, and they're a lot more unpredictable than Melbourne, I'd say. Race number seven is the Russell-Balding Stakes. Currently, the track is a soft five, and the rail's in the true position. 1,300-meter group two race. Jimmy Starr, $4.20 from Headwall, $4.60. Ninja, $5.00. Headley Grange, 10s. Grafter Burners, God bless him. He got the Sydney Stakes win for us. He's $10.00, and Cabalas is $13.00. Also, Pericles at 17, who we've learned, is running here. I think this is an easy, easy one. I'm back in two horses that come out of the Everest, and neither of them are Jimmy Starr. My main angle in this race is just to be against Jimmy. He's on the outside barrier here in barrier 16, or one from the inside. He's a horse who can be slow away. If Ethan Brown goes forward, it is Ethan Brown's only ride for the day. If he tries to go forward, he could be cooked. Three wide, four wide, no cover. And if Jimmy is slow away, or if they elect to go back, I just think he could get into an impossible, impossible position to win. So, I got $5.00 for Headwall, and $5.50 for Ninja earlier. Headwall was one of the great runs in the Everest, and this horse is just absolutely flying this preparation. You never would have thought that he'd come back from an injury break. He's been excellent, and his ratings match that as well. The one query with him is whether he stays a strong 1,300. A lot of his good form, he's over those really shorter sprinting trips, but I'm keen on Headwall, and I'm also on Ninja. Ninja, who, this horse can definitely offset that barrier 13 and roll forward with Tommy Berry. And I think he, there is a position for him in the first four or five in the run, and he was excellent in the Everest as well, and he's probably, you know, one of his biggest wins to date was over 1,300. So, I'm keen on the Dutch bet, Headwall, Ninja.
Speaker 6Niko? Yeah, I didn't really have a fair opinion in the race. I thought it was pretty hard. But yeah, I thought Ninja would be hard to beat, but I don't know whether I really wanted to get involved, to be honest.
Speaker 5Okay. Just about the richest race in Australia, for first place prize money anyway, is the Golden Eagle. $10 million for the four-year-olds. Gee, it's certainly hurt a few other races around it, but we can't deny that it is a good race, and it has attracted one of the best mares, not only in Australia, but the world. And she's an alibi. She's our $1.85 favorite from Bayvacht. He's $7. Autumn Boy is $9. Skyhook is $7. He's drawn really wide, $12. And the really interesting runner is Amazing Journey, 16 out to 21. Apocalyptic, 21 was too good for Tacorum last time around, is 26 as well. Niko, the interesting thing with this race is obviously she's alibi was beaten, not disgraced last time in the Might and Power. They ran track record time. I don't know how Land Legend put in a performance like that to beat her, but now she's coming off a brutally run 2,000, three weeks, back to a 1,500.
Speaker 6Won't be a problem. I think I've got on good authority that she's come through the run perfectly fine, and there's no reason to doubt her. I think she is a superior animal to these. This is not a very good race. She's simply better than them. She's drawn the perfect barrier, and we don't have Land Legend here to worry about, so we're all sweet. Simple as that. It's as simple as that. She'll win. She's a great bet. She's home. Hashtag she's home.
Speaker 5I tend to agree. I've backed her at better than even money earlier today with 365 with the boost price. She actually got to $1.95, and then she touched $2. It didn't last long, but bet 365. We're the only bookmaker who bet $2 at one stage today. She's now into $1.85 across the board. She comes into barrier five after we've had a few scratchings today. Baron Gary and Federalist come out, and I just think she's going to be way too good. She's got a. a clear ratings edge on these. Bayvox can run well. I thought he was a little bit disappointing, to be completely honest, last time. At $1,300, yeah, maybe he's better at $1,400, $1,500. I just think the mayor's going to round him up, and Autumn Boy, he'll run well. He'll probably run second to her yet again. This will be the fifth time if they were able to run the one-two yet again. She's alibi. Look, the gray up is she's gone from a really fast run $2,000 back to the $1,500, and sometimes that can take the sprint out of horses' legs, and they're a little bit dour. It's probably a better setup to remain at 2,000 meters, but with good horses, I just think you can ignore that a little bit when they've got such a dominant edge on their opposition, and that's what she's got. She's the second-best horse in Australia, potentially behind Autumn Glow. Tempted is in that conversation as well. All three of them are mayors, and I think she's going to bolt in here, and I think she's at a very good price. She'll be my biggest bet on Saturday. Bott, anything to say about the Golden Eagle?
Speaker 7I hope she's alibi. Smashes them. Yeah.
Speaker 5I think she will. Simple as that. Nico, give us your quick WA set.
Speaker 6The two races, it's a great betting card in WA, and I haven't had time to do it all just yet, but we'll just touch on the two features. Oh, there is prices out. What? That can't be right. Hold on a second. Race nine is the Asian Bow Stakes. That can't be right.
Speaker 5What? Playing a sweets price?
Speaker 6No, Bonjoy's price. Why is she $9? She's four from six, third up.
Speaker 5Second up. She's only. The weight. It's the weight. That's why. It's a handicap or whatever it is.
Speaker 6I still think that's a bit big. I'm hot and high clearly on top, even money, but Bonjoy's a dumb price at $9. Get her to $11. Fuck me. $12 even, yeah. Wild. Bonjoy should be second favorite. Yeah. I think it's an easy two-bet play. You're back hot and high. You save Bonjoy. And then race 10, I think Rockfest looks a certainty in the last. I don't know what type of price we're going to get. But this horse, second up. Four-year-old, sorry. This horse pissed in first up. Pretty dominantly. Gets Holly Donald's. He gets the claim one and a half off.
Speaker 5Should get black odds at least.
Speaker 6Yeah. Around that even money mark. Should be good. But I'm pretty staggered. Bonjoy's price is what she is. Geez, I had my heart in my throat when I launched last time. She nearly beat King of Light. So she's going very well. She's been a very good horse to us, Bonjoy. She'd get a spot on the poster wall at the shrine at my house.
Speaker 5Hot and high is an interesting one because her ratings probably don't, like her SPs, probably out sort of shine. her figures but she just keeps getting the job done like a lot of her wins are very narrow margins
Speaker 6she's just a winner but um she was completely off the game she was gone at the top of the straight last time yeah nah she's she's she's just a good racehorse there's um there's a lot of good good young horses in w8 at the moment they're um here to think that two of their better horses are over here like imagine if smooth chino and cosmic crusader were there for the whole pinnacles like
Speaker 5have you that replay of um horse in the emilia's jewel colors winning last week the sprint race
Speaker 6bassett hound bassett hound the way that you should have seen me carry on like this spot we were absolutely tanked after the races but back to the apartment just before we went out i carried on like you haven't seen before it was a dollar forty oh yeah we had to crack it much better than a dollar forty yeah i said i said something along the lines of top of the straight go on bassett fetch him we were like we were roaring at home and i just like i was there in front of the tv and i was like i was like throwing the ball like don't bassett fetch fetch carrying them carry gone that's
Speaker 1some of the worst gear
Speaker 6i've ever heard it was just one of those ones that you had to be there now that i've brought it up you can ask zachary and you can ask bishop oh yeah it was a great win and bassett he went and got his ball he deserves he deserves to be favorite for the quokka uh for the quokka for the winter bottom uh if i just hope it doesn't all come too soon for him
Speaker 5but um the way that the way that he came around the ascot straight and the way that patrick harvey was sitting on him he looks so much like joker's grin like his action looks so much like joker's grin just towels over him nice big holes i've already
Speaker 6made one outlandish statement for tonight so i won't make another but well he's better awesome it could be that's it could be better than he could be
Speaker 5that's probably not as outlandish
Speaker 6joker should have left never left wa well
Speaker 5he's a very good horse but just what's happened over in the east is just so just abort and send him home it's just it just makes it just set him up i mean he's had some injury problems i don't i don't think they've got him right but it just breaks your heart yeah to rip him off the trainers over in wa sending him to wallah and for what's happened i don't i
Speaker 6don't know it leaves a bad taste in the mouth yeah but bassett he's a very exciting horse yeah give him strength and he loves
Speaker 5to get his ball i've got a bit of 13 dollars in the winter bottom so i'll be i'll be throwing the ball at the tv as well yeah podcast multi-time brother um a couple of stats we've had about 20 podcast multis podcast multis so if you spend a hundred dollars on every podcast multi yeah your return would be two thousand eight hundred and forty dollars correct so we are up eight hundred and forty dollars profit on turnover of forty two percent we've only hit four out of twenty but it just shows that the prices we're getting we only
Speaker 6need to hit one yeah yeah when you go through and you look at the prices like what i said is the usually six eight dollars yeah yeah you know and we could probably add up all the total prices that we've had we'll go through it now while we're here um let's just bring it up so and look look we're
Speaker 5not we're not making excuses we know the podcast multi in recent weeks has been house
Speaker 6hundred percent like it hasn't but if you if you just follow it every week hasn't won the last seven weeks yeah which is terrible hundred percent but we hate it but a lot of the hatred towards us well not towards us but towards the podcast multi is people that chop and change yeah and pick when they take it so you've got to commit to it and take it every week blindly because if you have you're in front
Speaker 5it's like the sen track top four multi you've got to take it every week to be
Speaker 6in front yeah so you know collective one one week was a uh a ten dollar forty multi collect one week was six dollars thirty one week was four dollars twelve and the other one was you know better than eight dollars so a big price yeah but you look at so the last seven weeks that the podcast multi is lost we've gone six dollars seventy five twelve dollars eighteen six dollars seventy five five to eighty five six eighty two seven forty seven six seventy six so you know you stick with us stick with us it's not like we're having uh short prices you're getting you're getting a good you're getting a good price with the multi um and it's not going to win every week and that's just that's just how it is so um yeah just going to stick fat and it's a marathon not a sprint
Speaker 5so leg one of the podcast
Speaker 6multi you are with leg uh leg one for me is race two number one regular ambition beautiful is uh is one of the better bets of the carnival for me so um yeah i just think she's she's well placed 400 meters if tricky mickey can just get his head right we're uh we'll be lining up to collecting and uh and playing the music so fingers crossed that can happen um otherwise could be tears i didn't i didn't leave after the first after high school got beat last week but i really wanted to you shouldn't have said that that was just stupid i really did and the boys said you can't go and watch me and

Speaker 6Shout out to Jen. She'll be listening. Please come through. Jen Salem, shout out. Please give us some tickets. I'm finding it hard to believe our Call of the Cards sold out. Anyone that's ever been to Crown Palladium, that's a big fucking room. There must be a lot of people going. Yeah. Because that's a big room and it should be impossible to sell out.
Speaker 5They'd be giving all the international guys free ticketing and there's so many of them this year.
Speaker 6Well, we're on the world stage, so cough them over. Level five. But, yes, if we don't go to Call of the Card, we'll definitely be going to the Rising Sun Hotel in Calcutta for Gareth and Milo and the Giddy Up crew. So shout out to them, the greatest pub in the whole entire world. Come down and have a beer with us. Ben and I will be there. Yeah, it's always a great night there. So, yeah, if we're not at Call of the Card, we'll definitely be there. So we might even do a little video at the Rising Sun, Ben, and just post, like, little tips or something.
Speaker 5Yeah. Ryan, who does Chris Waller think he is sending three colts for the Carbine Club this year? Where's his future Group 1 filly? He usually has for this race that I can blindly bet. Yeah, that's good gear. What are some of the ones that have been? Fangirl. Aliana. Panova. Panova last year.
Speaker 7Colding won it. Yeah. That's not a filly. Yeah, well, he was pretty good and he won it. There's a couple others, but I'm.
Speaker 5Pink Pingu? Pink Pingu? Uh, Dowling. Regal Ambition, Lady Shenandoah, She's Alibi, Who Lets Me Down. I don't think any of them. I think they're all going to win. Oh, wait. Found, uh, this is Punters and Beers. Keen for a Cup Day catch up with the lads. Top two seeds currently for the Cup each. Expecting bot for a stride length explanation for it. And also found Nico's truck and it's a picture of the, uh, the old Armour Guard. There you go. Plenty of Armour Guard photos getting around.
Speaker 7They're still there. Um, point of. Law will be favorite and if he's not, I'll back him. Um, I'm not going to say what I'm going to say.
Speaker 6Uh, I don't know.
Speaker 7I don't even know what the field will be. Um, I haven't looked mate, um, it's RB day's priority now.
Speaker 5Yep. Um, plenty of people asking Nico, uh, Nathan Dippy, congrats boys. Well-deserved for the numbers you're doing. Let's hope that Nico has a, is it Zyrtec or Zyrtec? Is that the, is that the info? Is that the info?
Speaker 6That I have Clarence on Zyrtec is what the other high fever one is.
Speaker 5Those tablets that you should be taking off.
Speaker 6I love how these little smart asses, I don't fucking swallow them like lollies every day. Overdose. How much better am I? How much better am I today? Yeah. I get five or six days where I get properly bent over with my hay fever. Yeah, okay. Like, I don't help myself with my day job, but, yeah, I get hay fever worse than most. And hay fever at the moment is really bad. Yeah. So it's just part and parcel of life. You just got to deal with these type of things. Yeah. Bot couldn't handle it.
Speaker 5Riley Holes, coming to Perth for the carnival at all, question mark, best time of the year? Oh, I would love to be. I reckon we've got to go over for the quokka. We were talking to.
Speaker 6When's the quokka date?
Speaker 5What's his name? He came on our podcast. Lockie Taylor. Lockie Taylor, yeah, yeah. I think it's in April sometime.
Speaker 6We could make April work. I really wanted to try and make this end of the year work, but it's just not going to align. But we could go to the quokka. The pinnacles this year are going to be so good because, like, you know, Basset Hound. And I really wanted to get over there because it'll be Western Empire's. I would have thought that type of stuff, like, but it's just not going to work. But definitely, definitely want to get to WA at some point. Yeah. And whether it'll be for, it'll be in carnival time.
Speaker 5Yeah. Will Smith. How can I word this question? You'll get what I mean.
Speaker 6I can ask her to be a wicked place.
Speaker 5Do any of you lads press the pink button on the yellow app?
Speaker 7Nah, not, not really. I'd like, I'm more of a backer than a. I'm not a layer.
Speaker 5A pinker. A pinker, pinker. Okay. You're not a layer, are you? Sometimes. Not as much as. You don't mind a little place back in. I've had a place lay for a little while. A little place lay. But no, it's not really our thing. You've got to have big pockets like Jack O'Olden to be laying horses. It's all price sensitive. But you've got to, like, if you want to make a couple grand or like a grand laying a horse, you've got to, you've got to put up like three or four if you're laying something at $4. Like that's just, that's big balls territory.
Speaker 6I would just prefer if. You know, what you saw on that app was what was real. Like, take, show me the, show me the real price. Don't show me the price, less commission. It's just a blurred line to me. Like, just show me the facts. Yeah, I agree with that. It becomes, it becomes way too complex for the person who doesn't understand it. Like I don't understand, I don't understand and I can't comprehend how the in-play stuff works and the laying off, the laying off, you know, backing, laying, all that type of stuff. It's just very complex. And I would like to think that I've got some idea in the wagering landscape. So for the bloke that has no idea that this was the layoff on one multi. Yeah. It's a fucking mind.
Speaker 5Let's get through a couple more quickly. Multichaser, how does it feel to be the most popular and most listened to racing podcast in Australia? And by quite a bit might add, no other racing podcast has anywhere near 200 reviews on Spotify. I've been listening since episode one. Wow. Wow. That is a big statement. I don't think we're quite number one, but I think we're up there in the popularity stakes. We do have 200 reviews, like the five star reviews. We're on 4.9.
Speaker 7I was the one star.
Speaker 5Oh, did you give us a one?
Speaker 7Did you? Probably.
Speaker 5There's probably a couple that gave us a one and most are giving us five. I think two units have about 250. Look, they've been around a little bit longer than us, but we're creeping up the ranks for sure. I don't know why he's listened to us, but. It beats me.
Speaker 6Why would you not want to hear my voice? Why would you?
Speaker 7Fuck up. No, I'm talking about all of us, not just you, but mainly you.
Speaker 5Bailey Green, is the horse is the new sweet Caroline, which is the new Hells Bells? You laughed at me when I said this. Every time a song is sung before a race and you don't get the result, it's the Hells Bells.
Speaker 7It's like a model taking a photo with a horse. It's just anytime they sing a song, you just don't have a bit.
Speaker 5Do we have the Hells Bells there? Do we have the Hells Bells there, Jono? Somewhere? Anyway, sweet Caroline and the horses. They were no good before the Everest and the Cox Plate, but it is where it is. Jack Jonas says, keen to meet you boys this week in coming. 11 lunatics coming from Newey, which is Newcastle. Huge. Look out. Carter Wilson, how drunk was Benny when he sent you out seven and a half units on Global Goal three minutes before the race? Oh, she wasn't drunk at all.
Speaker 617 and a half, yeah. Seven and a half. Oh, so you said 17 and a half. No. Seven and a half.
Speaker 5That's a normal, that's a normal bet for me at $3. That's a really big swig, yeah. Look, I don't, I don't, I don't do unit betting to a bankroll. So if you're listening to this and you're wondering like seven units, massive, massive bets, it's a big bet, but it's not like, it's not crazy, crazy big. I was just trying to get the same result out of Global Goal that I'd got out of Stormy Marco. Unfortunately, I had second, third and fourth, including future bets. So that was a strip out the spring champions. So it was a Cox plate. Lucas Wayman, where is the best place to look at ratings and times?
Speaker 7Form King, in my opinion.
Speaker 5It's not the best place to look at times. Let's be honest. I think it is. Easily. It just compares the benchmark. It doesn't give you raw times.
Speaker 7Yeah. Oh, you have to hold it down. Yeah. I mean, I mean, why would you want raw times anyway?
Speaker 5Wait, what do you mean you have to hold it down?
Speaker 7Like you hover over it and you can look at the raw time. But, um, I mean, raw times are, I mean, mean nothing. Unless you're putting them against a par.
Speaker 5This, this might be news to me. What you were just saying. Look. You hover over the thing. Show me, show me what you mean. All right. Um, just keep talking. All right. Um, Rich, Mitch Riddle, uh, run through brick walls on, on Saturday morning. The intro could honestly be the best things I've ever listened to. It makes me want to run through the brick walls.
Speaker 7Yeah. It's contentious.
Speaker 5The, the, the intro is a contentious topic right now because Spotify keeps taking. Our podcast down because of the intro song, because of the Foo Fighters intro. It wasn't a problem for three or four years. Nico. We've always had the same intro. Spotify did take down some of our podcasts for using copyright music at the end of the episode, but this is different.
Speaker 7So hold on, hover over it. See, there's the sectional time there.
Speaker 5I never did it. I never knew that. So I've just learned something new on form King. Anyway, that's good to know. Ben's going to be a sectionals. The. No, well, yeah, baby, no, it is. It is good to know, but I prefer looking at times on punting form, but I agree form King is a much better product. Um, so yeah, hopefully if anyone knows how it's not as
Speaker 6good as my matrix database, that's for sure.
Speaker 5If anyone knows how we can get the copyright to be gone on the intro, then please let us know. Cause we don't want to lose you in show. We're happy. Just posting. Yeah. If you want to get the copyright to the episode, if it gets deleted, it gets to lead a lot of the time it's, it doesn't get deleted until one or two weeks later. So everyone still gets the opportunity to listen to it anyway. So it's not the biggest deal of all time. No, a scan is, is it finally upon his weekend? Plus will you boys be at Florence in this Saturday?
Speaker 7Yes. And yes, yes.
Speaker 5And yes, you coming huge. All three of us are there. Um, Bailey Kelly, is it actually achievable to be a profitable punter these days without selling a service? Yes, it is. It is getting hard.
Speaker 7I bought. Well, that's why people still bet. It feels like a dig at Ben.
Speaker 5It is a dig at me. A hundred percent. It is a dig at me. I have spent so much money into building my app. You'd be surprised. I haven't taken out much money from it. I'm constantly putting more money into it to make the app better. But, um, People wouldn't say that side of it. If you're having a dig at me, this is the first losing year I've had in about five years. So please jog on. Please jog on and give me a spell. Um, Max Lohan, hate to rub Salton again. What was the figure for Kayang rising, winning and Benny? I'm still off.
Speaker 6Well, I know six here, right?
Speaker 5What was the, what was the,
Speaker 6I know six, one Oh six, it was one Oh six flat.
Speaker 5She ran one Oh six. Um, Kayang rising ran one Oh 6.8 last year and about one Oh five this year. So he clearly regressed Nick stone. Is it true that Nick and bought kiss after the show? Oh my God, they're so good. Ruben Evans, Benny, when are you getting a Lindemann tattoo? Um, that's true. He has absolutely been one of mine and scared of needles. Yeah. They're not really my thing. I don't actually have one. Do you, you don't have one either. How do you know you've got a couple?
Speaker 6Yeah, I've got seven.
Speaker 5Yeah. Nice. Uh, Jack card. Hey boys, staying at crown this weekend. Any advice for winning on the tables?
Speaker 6Cheers. Yeah. Don't play. Don't play on the table with fuckwits. Serious. Don't plan. Just, you gotta be very selective about this. You gotta just have a browse either play on the table. If, if you know what you're doing, you just need to, you'll know what I'm saying. Just go, go and have a bit of a sauce because I was there. Who was I there last weekend? And if you're on the wrong table with people that don't know table etiquette or just playing dead, then it's, it's just. It's a recipe for disaster. So you've got to suss, you've got to suss some water and just have a look what's going on. Just don't go. My advice is don't,
Speaker 5don't play blackjack plus where the dealer doesn't bust on 22, which is just the biggest bullshit I've ever heard. And also the roulette where there's three greens on the table. There's this zero double zero. I just found out about this last week, mate, they're finding more and more ways to make the market percentage bigger and make your winning chances on what is meant to be a 50, 50 game. Small.
Speaker 6Wild That shows you how long I hadn't played the tables for There's three greens on the table now I went to a roulette table and I'm like Why is there three greens?
Speaker 5Three greens They look to me like how
Speaker 6long have you since you've been here
Speaker 5So basically if you're betting red or black You're not getting 50-50 You're getting like 40, like 44% or 43% or something now It's just crazy A couple more before we wrap up Lincoln Morgan, what's with trainers not running their horses at their best distances? Attica, Pericles, etc Or you can add Aliana to that list You can add Ole Dancer to that list The list goes on It just shits me to pieces Aliana should be a dual Caulfield Cup winner in my opinion And the last one is from Ed Causton Who is the son of Troy Causton So share that to the Malua team They actually tune in very much And they hold on to the things we say And they use them in promo videos against us There we go
Speaker 6I've seen some of those What are they going to use against us now?
Speaker 5That's good stuff though Remember when we bagged Barrick Hill? Ended up on the flyer
Speaker 7That was awesome that video
Speaker 5It was used as a Bennett Racing promotion What are we in the gun for now? Nothing He says we'll bot making a special appearance at the ABH Ascot Vale Hotel Post the races on Saturday
Speaker 7I can do, yeah You don't want to have to be with Barney though
Speaker 5Isn't Benny Allen playing at Anglers after Saturday? Yeah, I don't venture over to those places I might be going to Anglers, I'll see
Speaker 7Where does he want me to go? Ascot Vale? Ascot Vale Hotel? That's where everyone goes Let's wrap up
Speaker 5the podcast here It's been a long one, 1 hour 40 But it's been a good one It is clearly one of the biggest days of the year Get your black and white sorted And we'll see you out there Cheers punters You win some, you lose more For free and confidential support

Summary:

FAQs

The Cox Plate is a major Australian weight-for-age race, traditionally held at Moonee Valley but run at Flemington this year. The hosts discussed how the venue change affected the atmosphere and whether Cosmic Crusader would have won at Moonee Valley.

Cosmic Crusader won the Cox Plate after a fast early tempo caused the race to flip, with horses from the back finishing first through fifth. The hosts noted he was the fittest horse and appreciated the strong lead speed.

The hosts strongly favour the two Sydney colts, Stormy Marco and Cormier, believing the Sydney form is superior to the Victorian form. They suggest backing both and expect one of them to win.

Lady Shenandoah in the Empire Rose Stakes is their best bet, described as head and shoulders above the field at set weights. They note she would be giving 10-15 kilos if it were a handicap.

They strongly favour She's A Liar, calling her a superior animal who should win easily despite stepping back from 2,000m to 1,500m. They consider her the second-best horse in Australia.

The podcast multi is a weekly multi-bet the hosts put together. Over about 20 multis they are up 42% profit on turnover despite only hitting four, showing the value of their prices.
