here talking about old stories what was your childhood like growing up in brooklyn my childhood growing up in brooklyn it was kind of normal okay good but not like school was kind of mean like i got bullied in school why um i don't know i think well i think when i was younger i used to brag a lot in school it's like a defense mechanism yeah like because i got weirdly like bullied for being dark-skinned in school i'm like i literally go to a black school they'd be like yeah you fucking like if dogs like if a black dog walked by they'd be like Look at Justine like walking by like and I would wear like like all black. I was like kind of emo in school and like so I wore like black high top converses and they were like, but you're a big ass fucking feet and like well and I was like I've been this height since I was like in school. So they would just like say things like and like bully me and I was like where I had braces like whatever. And so in my defense because like my like I kind of like grew up in the industry. My mom's a lawyer. So like I'd go on to like Jamaica or I'd be like in Miami with my mom while she was working and I'd get darker. Like I get tan and then they do be like you're black as fuck like blah blah blah and I'm just like well, I was just in Miami for New Year's. Where the fuck were you? Yeah, like and so like that. So it was like I would I was like you were it wasn't like I wanted to do that, but it was like it was your defense mechanism. Yeah, I was just like well making fun of you. You were like, well, yeah, like no, it was so bad guys. Like one time in middle school. I'm like it was so sad. Like I was in the locker room in middle school like after gym and this girl took my clothes shit. That's what you see. You see movies. No, it was like like it was like that. Like she literally took my clothes and I was like just in the locker room naked. And then what do you do? Just like in the locker room. So then I don't know. I don't even remember how I got out of the situation. No, I'm not like was I crying? Yeah, because I was like, what did I do? Like I it wasn't like I was just I don't know what it was. It's scary. And like anytime something happened, my mom would come up to the school and like be yelling at people like even in elementary school, like for some reason in elementary school, some like these they wanted to say that I was pregnant. I was like. In third grade. Wait, that's crazy. Check the fuck out. And so they're like they were like spreading a rumor around school that I was pregnant. And so my mom comes up to school and curses the little boy out that was like saying that I was pregnant. And then she got scared to piss your mom off. No, she got banned from the school. Your mom? Yeah, she couldn't pick me up from school anymore. From like coming so much? Yeah, she couldn't come on the school grounds. So she yelled at the boy. Your mom was a lawyer. Is a lawyer. Yeah. Still is. Still is. Because my mom didn't play that. She was just like, you said what? Yeah. So school wasn't really like my thing. Well, I dropped out. Did you do college or in high school? No. So I got homeschooled for the last two years of high school because I also got bullied in high school. What? It was like, I don't know why I was always getting bullied. Justine. Like these girls. I can even see that now knowing you. I'm like, how could you ever? No, it's so weird because like I watch these K dramas now and they're always about like getting bullied in school. And I'm like, that was me like getting bullied because the teachers never did anything about it. It was like weird. That's crazy though. Like this girl took my phone and like texted me. Cause I got like a tattoo in my lip when I was 15 because I went to an art school and like some of the kids in school did tattoos and I'm just like, I got a smiley face in my lip. So then someone stole my phone during gym, texted my mom from my phone and was like, your daughter's a whore. She got her boyfriend's name tatted in her lip. Shut the, Justine. It was like, it was full. Like it was like actually a movie. Like, and so my mom, I can't find my phone. I had a Blackberry. I can't find my phone. I had one of those. Me too. Can't find my phone. I'm just like, what the fuck? What the fuck's going on? Freaking out. My mom, she like picks me up from school that day and she's like, we're driving in the car and she's like, do you have a tattoo? And I'm like, no, what are you talking about? Like, that's crazy. Why would I have a tattoo? I'm 15. And she's like, do you have a tattoo in your lip of your boyfriend's name? Cause who the fuck is your boyfriend? And I was like, and I was dating like this boy who didn't go to my school, who was like a gangbanger. Oh my gosh. Kind of. I don't know. I don't know. We're in like high school. I don't even know if he was like a real gangbanger. Gang member or banger? Same thing. Isn't that like a gangbanger? Like multiple people having sex. Gang bang. Like she got gang banged. Isn't that like multiple people have sex with someone? Who are you dating, girl? How old were you? Vic, no, that's not what, I mean, yes, that is what that means, but. You said he's a gangbanger. No, like gangbanger. Like, you know, they talk, I'll be outside with my gang gang. You were just talking about gangbanger. You were just talking about how your mom is an entertainment lawyer. So what was success? What did success look like in your household? And when did you realize that your upbringing wasn't typically like a normal situation? I don't know what like normal really means. I think it's like, like sometimes I see people like, like people call me like a nepo baby. And I'm like, like for me, a nepo baby is like someone who comes from like a famous like parent, like in a famous family or like someone who like comes from the person that like made Bic pens. You know what I'm saying? But it's like, I guess, yes, my mom like is an entertainment attorney. So it like, it helped me, but it also like kind of opened some doors. It opened some doors, but it also was like, it made people look at me being like, oh, that's like her daughter. Like, yeah. Like, you know, like I had to kind of like figure things out in my own space, which is what Tumblr helped me do. And then people started to like, take me seriously. I guess success in my household. Like my mom was a single mother. So like I lived with her and she was always working. Like my aunt was like taking care of me a lot of the time. Like when my mom would like be working late hours or have to like travel, cause she was bringing, she was like working hard to make sure that I never like struggled. She just wanted to make sure I had everything that was like perfect, but she was like working so much. So you always on a vacation. She just wanted me to have like an amazing life. And then I wanted to be an artist. Always, always like from the day I was born, I wanted to be an artist. Like I was like, I feel like I came out. I don't know. My mom was so fly growing up. Like she had all the red bottoms and I was just like, Oh, my mom is lit. And I always used to be, she says, no, what's her shoe size? She's a seven. What are you? 39. No, she said she didn't want to say nine. She said 39. Me and sauce are the same size and I'm going to say it before she does. Yes, I did lose her shoes. Oh yeah. She lost her boots. No, my hands. My heels. No, that other bitch lost my boots. Yes. Yeah, there's bitches out here stealing boots. So beware, beware. Justine stole my shoes. But yeah, it was just like my mom taught me like to always hustle and never take no for an answer and to just keep like going for my dreams. Like she was a part of my career for such a long time. We don't work together anymore, but she's still like giving me advice. And like, it's just great to have her like our relationship as mother and daughter so much better. Now that you don't work together, that we don't work together because I feel like before we just like consistently talking about work to the point that I was like, we never got to like hang out as mother and daughter because that was just what it was since I was like 16. Right. And so now I can be like, Mom, like, you're not going to believe it. I just went on a date and this boy is like, blah, blah, blah. And she's like, girl, tell me why this boy is blah, blah, blah. And it's just so nice that we have that relationship now. But I also like if I'm just like, hey, like this is happening. Like, what do you think about this? And she's like, hey, like, I know you didn't ask for my opinion. But like, blah, blah, blah, you should do this. And it's just nice to get the advice, but also have the mother daughter bond that I feel like was lost during the time, the times of us like working together. Yeah. Because she's such she's such a boss and she's so locked in. And so like everything that we did, like if I was like, Mom, like, I really don't want to do this. She's like, well, this is what's good for your career. She was like locked in like full momager. And I'm just like, so some some parts of it like made me sad because I'm just like, I just want my mom. Yeah. Yeah. Does she rep anyone that we might? I know at the moment. No, she actually has gone into the cannabis business. Shut up. Yeah. Which I'm really I'm so it's my business. Hello. Well, speaking about being young and working with your mom, you also met with a lot of labels when you were younger. Do you think that you wish you waited or do you think that going through everything you went through with labels kind of shaped where you are and what you've built now? I feel like everything that I have gone through in my career has. Made me the artist and the woman that I am today and through like the rejection or the ups and the downs and the rollercoasters that I've gone through, I feel like I understand the industry better if I was just like a like a new artist today, like I probably would have fallen for like bad deals that people have offered me like before I just signed to Warner, you know, like they were when I was like looking to like sign again after being independent for three years. I was just like, do you guys think I'm stupid? Right. Like you guys think I just woke up today and decided to be like an artist and like you're putting this contract in front of my face like you're like, actually, I've been through this. Yeah. And like, you know that I've been through this. So actually, it's just like disrespect. Right. Right. And then I finally found like a great home with Warner and they're so supportive and it's just been an amazing experience because sometimes being at labels is like not a favorite thing like for an artist to do unless you're like huge. Yeah. Like, you know, like and even still like we know some people who still like go through shit with their labels, you know, and it's just like labels. It's a business. Yeah. It's a business. So that's why I don't take shelf. Like, yeah, you can get shelved or they'll like give certain things to other people. Yeah. I mean, we're just we're also just in a day and age where as an artist, you have to fight for yourself more than anything ever. Like there's not really artist development like there was back in the days where they like sign an artist and they put all this money behind them. Like you, you really have to like just do shit on your own and get shit like popping on your own. And then they're like, which is also the annoying that thing of TikTok. I mean, I always know it, but also a pro. No, for some people. Sometimes. No, I don't actually know. It can be a pro, but it's like, but I always think of the story of like Frank Ocean, you know, it's like what you guys probably don't know. I'm about to put you on. I don't know. Tell me. Well, it's just like he was he was going under like another name and he then changed his name. Yeah. Lonnie. And then he changed his name to Frank Ocean, like started putting out like music and mixtapes. And then the label was like labels are trying to sign. to find him and he was like, I'm already signed to you i think that's the story but but she's like don't quote me actually now that i said i think you want maybe i don't know i think that's correct but it's just like you know what i'm saying like labels like there's also what i love about being with warner is like they don't have that many artists yeah like they have a lot of artists but they like they're very like focused on like the people that they have and they pay attention and so it's really nice i'm actually meeting with my anrs the other day shout out my anrs i love them that's amazing i guess you kind of just said that but was there ever a moment that you felt like no one's gonna build this for me so i'm gonna do it on my own oh yeah i mean in the like separation of like getting a new team after like parting ways with my mom i was kind of just like fuck i've never done this without her before like how right like how where do i even begin and i feel like it was the first time in my life that i actually felt like an adult which is crazy because i'm grown but i was because i felt like my mom was like my mom so she was like taking care of everything and i was like i feel like i need to do this on my own if i fail i feel by myself yeah and so i started taking like meetings literally by myself no one else with me just like meetings by myself walking into like labels offices like managers like everything and i'm just like with lawyers i'm just asking friends being like hey can do you know these people like set me up with them like blah blah and i'm like i'm being like the most vulnerable i've ever been in my life i'm like hey like i know i've been in this industry a long time this and that i'm hungry this is my this is what i want to do this is the direction that i want to go in i'm switching my sound like if you fuck with it then you fuck with it if you don't just tell me straight up like i don't need you to sugarcoat anything like i don't i'm not begging anyone to fuck with me like i know what i have and i know who i am yeah and if you see that then you do and if you don't then cool i'll go to somebody else but like i wasn't like i said like like what i learned from my mother i'm not taking no for an answer yeah and i just like was tunnel vision with everything and i don't know how but i built a team around me like a lawyer a manager this that business manager i'm like i look like when i sit with my team now we look back from like the moment when i had nothing literally like nothing like zero dollars in my pocket like didn't know what to do like my friends are helping me like guys like help i'm just like wow i've come so far from that moment which is about like two years ago now right it's just like it's exciting whereas like some people in my position they would feel defeated and like want to give up on being like i don't know what to do i don't know what to do i don't know
