Decoding internet culture in India with Anurag Minus Verma
68m 12s
The podcast discusses how internet culture in India has transformed from a limited, elite experience to an always-on, mass phenomenon. It starts with memories of dial-up connections and cybercafes, where platforms like Orkut provided simple dopamine boosts through scraps and testimonials. The shift to mobile data, particularly after Jio, democratized access, making the internet a necessity for entertainment and survival. This change empowered small-town creators and introduced new content like reels, which often reflect and amplify caste dynamics. The conversation explores how caste is mobilized online through songs and reels, with influencers like Elvish Yadav using their caste identity as a brand. These influencers hold immense aspirational power, despite controversies such as Yadav's arrest for snake venom use. The discussion also covers the rise of memes as a cheap, effective communication tool, now essential for political parties to engage youth. Examples include the use of memes in the US Trump campaign and by Indian parties like Congress and AAP, illustrating how internet culture shapes political discourse and social hierarchies in contemporary India.
Hi, welcome to another episode of Scroll Ideas with me, Shoeb Daniel. Scroll Ideas is scrolls long form interview podcasts where every episode will take an idea that Indians are debating and discussing and unpack it with a brainy guest. For this episode I have with me, Anrag. Anrag is a multimedia artist. He does a lot of things. He's a writer, he's a satirist, he's a filmmaker and he's writing a book on Internet culture in India and that's what we're here to discuss. Hi, Anrag. Thank you, thank you Shoeb. Thank you for inviting me or scroll code. I'm reading since many, many years and I've been fan of scroll the articles which are published in scrolls, so I always wanted to be here. It's your old age scroll. It's my old age scroll. Right. So Anrag, when my first computer came to me, I remember that my dad had an internet pack for 50 hours and he used to get the internet pack and I had to dial up. I used to get a call and I used to dial up to the internet and I used to be there for half an hour. I used to log off and say, "I don't want to buy more internet." That's how I used to do it. But now it has completely changed. People are online all the time. I am online all the time. What does it do to a person to be online all the time? Yeah, if you look at the history of it, there was a dial up connection which was connected to BSNL. BSNL was considered a very good internet service provider. I remember when someone called me, I used to be a speaker. I used to do this sound. I used to do something like that. And at that time you couldn't use the phone. So that sound, that means the speaker was first to know that it was a sound and then the phone was to come. And that time, if I remember correctly, the internet was like a window to the outside world, especially in the small towns where we were using it. So mainly for the games, for movies and for some people, for a pornography content, which was the major thing that so people used to use it. And that's how the whole concept of the cybercaface which opened up at that time. So many cybercafins that became a culture to go to the cybercaface and use it for 30 minutes. So use it for one hour. Because half in our slot slot, maybe APCA they used to write number or 30 minutes, one hour or one hour or one hour. And those were also some kind of a lovers place also because those were the close spaces and you know lovers also used to access it. So that was kind of a OU of that generation. So cybercafe internet in that sense played not just the love in terms of the cybercafe and meeting a lover, but also finding love on internet in that time. So if you remember Yahuchat was very big thing. ASL, ASL, ASL is the same. ASL is basically age, sex and location. All the Gen Zs, oh for Gen Zs. So anybody who used to use it, they would first start with ASL, question marks. ASL was age, sex and location. So that's how it used to happen at that time. And then obviously, Orkut came, Orkut was very popular in two countries. One was Brazil and one was India. A lot of combination. Very interesting. And invented by Turkish man. So Orkut was super popular. And in Orkut, if you remember, there was a concept of scraps. Scraps is where you know, kind of a messenger if you can say. And then there was a very interesting concept of two very pith, khuja methi, pith khuja, which was known as testimonials. So basically testimonials was, for example, if I'm friend with the show, then I would write a testimonial for him. Like, shrewayb is a very good person and his behavior is so good and everything. And there was a testimonial. And everybody, oh, you are my testimonial. So it was a big thing that you got testimonial. And then you got a testimonial. Which was, if you remember, in the 12th class, there was a concept of scrapbooks. As a farewell, there is a scrapbook in our hands. And everyone is talking to us and saying something to us. Something good is happening in our hands. What is our favorite food? And all of a sudden, we have to write it. Favorite or anything else. So we were very good at writing it. We used to have a very good ego boost up. So the concept of the ego boost up is the internet. I think it is a very central, like it feeds into our narcissism. So, it was based on that. But in so many bits, you will get testimonial for two or three months. You will get scrap. That means, it was in two or three days. One or two days. Yes, it was like that. So, the dopamines used to use it. That was so low and so, it was very low. Then, it was declined from one or two days. You were on Facebook and then you got the internet connection. I was in the post-geo. So, you were in the dopamines. You were in the dopamines. The ego was a huge role of the film. The film was very expensive. Like the airtell and everything. I don't know why it was so expensive. That you could use it in such a day. The whole life was completely free. So, after that, I will talk about the point of the point of the film. What happened? But in terms of your first question, psychologically, the point of the film was that you had to get the notification. Before, I had an email. I was on the sound of the song. So, the email is basically a sense of hope. We think that the email has something to do with me. We always think that the email will take us away of the misery of the existence. We are currently that one sound. But, it was obviously something. Many times, we get the wrong idea that you got a lottery and you were going to pay 5-100 dollars. But, yes. So, the dopamines that is more than today, it is so much that the whole rush is so much and it is endless. So, it is a pleasure machine which is making people very sad. Wow, that is a great point. In fact, I was reading, this is highly engineered. How did you get the dopamines rush? I mean, there are the smartest minds, Harvard, Columbia, and other than that, what is the meaning of the show? How did you get the name? Right. Explain to us. So, basically, when GO came, it completely like democratized kind of the internet. Everybody could now be on the internet. What was an elite thing in some ways became a mass thing. Mass thing and not just social media that hold what's up for all these things. It took with her. Tech Talk was popular at that time. It was popular at that time because we were going to become a government. The US is also considering banning it. So, India's example was given to the Indian government. But, in this way, there were a lot of apps on that time. And, the user who never saw the internet, or even had to take something from the internet, didn't even have that. And especially Facebook, I think Facebook is the most popular. There was a lot of popular tech talk on Facebook. I will talk about the demographic. Then obviously, tech talk, like the one in reals, then it started with reals. So, the reals initially, it was not able to understand the reals. So, it was very sanitized. And if you look at early reals, I had written an article why in-stereal are murder to modern day casteism. People who have taken a lot of blame, they are very good at it. People who have been in a lot of articles, as a review, as a paper, when they write it, they refer it. You have started doing that. People are very vulnerable to such such a reals. It's a very sanitized version. If you look at the insta reel, if you look who are the influencers on Instagram, at that time, at that time. At that time, at that time. In 2020, it was 1999, and that same reals, and that same low fire, that same aesthetic lighting, something that was not included in the internet. But whatever it is, the aesthetic lighting, just like Instagram, or English, but when we look at the Instagram, which is the algorithm, or the team of India, they are also vulnerable. If we look at the boss, it's a boring thing. When we look at the Instagram, there are influencers in the second section, there are no influencers. The tech tool was originally a system, so that the influencers, like this, this is the influencers, there are no influencers. And if you look at the content, then the overall content is not good. Or if you look at the small town, the creators, they are not good. There are no creators like this. In English, the English songs were trended. All the English songs were trended. Now, my parents were also trended. They were also trended. What not? So, in India, they changed their own song. And now, it became a big thing. So, I forward the original question. What was it? No, how is geochanged? This is not the whole thing. Everything is happening. You can access it easily. And Indian, I think, their survival mechanism is very interesting. Any technology that seems to be something to us.
Tho a sa uska bhi hata sa kta hai ki demo monetization ke baad ju internet ki compulsion ho ga ki it bhi ke m a compulsion, if it is not just you doing it for entertainment, but aap ko business chalana hai yaa, aap ko kui yaa ka sa bhi wala bhi yaa, aap ko bhi thoda vaad internet sa majnai baad hai yaa aap na internet chalanai, kli tra aay ko compulsion bhi ban ga. So it is not just ki majhi gaar nahi, maadhi a compulsion kaay saoga it bhi ke m a part of culture aap ko ske bhi na you can't survive aap bhi thu jis jis jis tra ki hai. Allo patani Rajasthan jasi jago baad path pe internet ban gara ita, wo bada viyada. But in general abh majnai lia ka internet ke bina, we can think of our world, we can think about. So one thing that I wanted to jump over what you said, this article that you wrote, a cast and reels. So obviously even before internet came Indians had a certain thing about religion, cast, love, this is that. So how is the internet changing, if you know let's take cast, let's jump up on cast and we'll go to the other things later. How is this always on internet, how is internet culture changing, how Indians you cast, how is it not changing it? As a kuch majla paa sa bhi change. There's no answer to that to be honest. Because internet kuch maa di ek te to humme ek, badi hi centralize tare kya sa di ek te. Chou ke ye khawari baad badi mis te ke jis aim internet kut di ek te. For example, TV wo umstudi hir na jhatin to tv go abh izili studi garsak te, okeh kya ohape, baara baar abh jitne vi channel hai, so dosu channel hai, ong ko aap sa joud ke, ong ka ek pattern banaak ki, say, this is TV. This is TV. This is TV. And this is how it operates. Cinema okat na hai, itne ni filmi releas o te, ong ka dataap ne li kaal e yug ng say. Internet is not a centralized medium ki, hot chea sa kei mo. And this is what it means, this is what it means, this is what it means, this is what it means, this is what it means, this is what it means. So, if I say this as a consumption or a consumption or a consumption or a consumption or a consumption or a consumption, then it is actually a real problem. So, cast is the main thing, we can see in this. So, the conversation started when the cast, the people who were in the internet, cast a particular circle in the past, so that is a angle. The second angle is that cast is a supremacism for the cast. I mean on this thing, I want to say, for example, now people will go to the website and they will be able to do round table. Yes. So, the person who taught me that if I was not learning, I would not have learnt, I would not have learnt, so that collection of information was there, that Kufi put forward, that put together was incredible. So, that is what started the first database, the articles of the cast, so that started the round table. Obviously, if I have a cast of a conversation, then I will see that I will put up a website, I will write a call on the scroll, I will write a call on the scroll, I will write a call on the wire, I will write a print, that is what happened now. It was not in that time, so round table in India was like a pioneer, it made a way, it made a way. So, if you look at that progress and that circle, there is a lot of cast, cast, collect, reentie cast, collect, there are a lot of work. But there is also a lot of cast mobilization through reels, so, like Elvish Yadav, Chattis Baraadri, this and that, how does that work? Yes, Elvish Yadav and all the many influencers are from NCR, they have a lot of cast specific, like Elvish Yadav's Yadav brand. So, if you don't have a group of people, you don't have to be a group of people, Yadav is brand, that means, it is the whole system, you have to stay down, Yadav. So, Yadav has a very important currency in the form of brand, so if you look at it from the bottom, basically, this is a 7th grade fight. So, the intermediaries that are cast, you can't be technically in this, but 7th grade is an open space. Cast can claim, meaning, it is claiming it, Gujar is claiming it, Yadav is claiming it, which is a bit unmanjored and the mahi is very big. But anyways, so, like this, cast specific things, so, the Yadav, who make their songs, Yadav brand and Gujar, you can see, Gujar is so many songs, Gujar is no more than Gujar, Gujar is a huge area, Gujar is a place where you can go to the center. So, Gujar is a digital technology creator, you have taken the cast, from the songs, from the reals, he has put the traffic jam on the internet. So, he has done the internet, because they are very desperately, that's their way of arriving, that we have arrived in the social structure. The espiritual ladder, the espiritual ladder, and the digital mythology, basically, basically, they use digital, creating a new form of mythology, like, Chard, Gujar, Yadav, everything else, everything else, everything else, it is also a place where you can go to the streets, and do the jattav. And the other cast, but, I don't think they have that much, I am just trying to do a cast in the digital medium, from the songs, the reals, that how they can rise up in the ladder, so this is also happening in everything, so, the matter of NCR, I am also saying the matter, because, it is a matter of the matter, it is a matter of the matter, so, this is the Chattis Bihladri, he has made it, that Chattis Bihladri, I don't know exactly, but, Chattis cast, so, Chattis cast, is that, our brother is going to be there, and everyone is going to be there, so, this brother is the keyword, because, the people who are fighting, they say, our brother is going to be there, so, they are reminding us, that, he is going to be there, because, this is, for the definition, he is going to fight, so, he is going to be there, Chattis Bihladri, in fact, it is very interesting, that Chattis Bihladri, when he was in the reservation of the Jat, when he was in the queue of the Vailen, he had been in the Jat reservation, so, it was the Jat, and that time he was in the queue, so, he was fighting in the queue of the Vailen,

Different so one Jodhung Garvey the political parties when they are jumping into this space around I think two or three weeks back Prime Minister Modi did a felicitation of influencers. Yes, yes. And very interesting Ushme Modi in a Bhashan which is rare. He just spoke to the influencers and said that they praised Modi. Yes. So it was a genius bit of sort of marketing that Modi did through these influencers. And so now these are so important that even the Prime Minister of India needs their help to win the next election. OBE and basically democratically you can see that situation is a little dangerous if you think you are giving a quality of the possibility of creating the mainstream creator. So that is the end. You can get a hand from Modi and you can get a hand from the office. You can get a video as well. So basically the mainstream is the biggest fear of the world. The world is a big mix of influencers and India. Which is strongly a culture and debate in the US. Where podcasts are being used for the current politics. And there are influencers and there are comedians and there are comedians and there are bulls. There are bulls. There are bulls. There are influencers and there are bulls. There are bulls. There are bulls. There are bulls. There are bulls. There are bulls. Abhi Chaly.

Progressive section are in that sense very much lazy on internet. Jog in general, we also have a 5 years of age in this channel. Jai newali yara baliyo utta. One thing that I wanted to jump of here is that obviously, what you're saying is, you know, an obvious fact that the right is huge on the internet. It is the hegemonic force, the dominant force. But one thing that I've seen coming back to the round table discussion is that the internet because it is so again what you said is so distributed. With the central cheese knee here, that it also allows space even in a small way for small, you know, to use a word minority ideology to come up. So, it could be cast. Another I think one that has made a lot of influences, you know, just gender ideology. The fact that especially in the west, especially in the west, things like queerness and so on, they have become matter of fact, at least in some circles on the internet. In a way that I don't think was true when I was growing up and there was no internet. So, that time it was still a very niche ideology. You had to go to a specific space and then you could, you know, enact out your queerness and so on and so forth. To some extent I think it was also true for language. So, I have seen that the things that are being made on the internet are not possible. I am just saying that I am being heard by the language of the language. Can you hear me? I will have to say it, it will be a good day. I am not able to hear the language of the language. The language of the language is very good. Is this also true? This is the haryan v queerness. All these small things that didn't get mainstream highlight. You know, you know, educating people about caste that round table did. Is that, does internet culture also give a space to that? Yes, this way, all the micro-ideology in terms of internet, culture, ideology is all the same. But, every thing that is being made on the internet is made on the small circles. So, that is what you want to find. You will see the internet. You have made everything in your life. And this is what the mainstream influence is. What is that? What is the, for example, when you started, when you started, round table made up, made up beachhead. And then, I think, we were all forced to follow. Like, these things, obviously there were other things. It wasn't just round table per se. But, round table was a big part of that. So, does it, even in a small way, does it, like, go through the culture? It can, because, especially in Twitter, it is what I am important. There are many discursions in the news channel. So, first of all, let's go to the news channel. It was a little bit interesting. Now, it is over. There is news, it is all about media, TV, etc. So, there were all these things, but if I talk about anticaast, then, if there are some things that are aligned with the movement, then, For example, when a court gave a decision, that we will dilute the SCST Act. So, it was a whole country movement. And, the first time, it was believed that, Twitter and Facebook were through, where, they mobilized this thing. So, I have actually done a story on this also, which was very interesting, because, when, when, when, when, the protestant, first, the protestant, this is also true, shine back to some extent, the SCST Act is in the moment. So, you should have done a song, because, a leader said that tomorrow, we will meet in the song, and, then, when we go to work, then, please, give it to us. Now, what is the process of making a group on WhatsApp? And, and they, there was a huge, forgetting, it happened on a specific day, there was a huge movement against the SCST Act. And, against the dilution, and the, it actually, first of all, back. It was a huge movement, a huge movement, a whole world, and, then, we should have done it for the next day. So, this way, many times, it was said that, some people had changed their society, some people had told, that, we should talk about it, I had forgotten his name, mint, and, then, I should have called him. So, the next time, I should have told him, so, basically, this way, there are some particular things, which, I think, especially, or, see, that too, recently, in Muslim, in some video, there was a viral, there was a lot of news, so, I don't know what that was, because, I had come to know. So, I had seen a lot of our people, who had heard about the hate speech, I had heard about it, and, then, I had heard about it. So, through, it means, now, everything, everything, is very, very different, but, some extreme cases, it does, carry forward the conversation. So, that's why, even, let's look at the case, the case, the case, the case, the social media, the social media, the journalists, who were covering it, the people were sharing it. So, when the case, the case, the first thing, they didn't even say,

What is causing this? Is this some like lonely epidemic? They have no one to talk to, Internet is their best friend, what is happening? Internet is the only way they talk. Now, like sharing the basic human is that if you have something with you, something good, bad, bad, you tell someone. It starts from the start, whether you are sharing your pain or something. You are sad, you are telling me. So when it was the first time that I was like this, like I was watching my mom, my grandma or my sister, every third time, I was talking to her on the phone. And she is sharing her things. What happened? The day was gone. But, what is the difference between what you are sharing with your grandma? What is the difference between your mother and sister? What is the difference between mother and sister? Let's talk about taxi drivers. There are 5 stories. There are 5 stories about the world. There are 5 stories about taxi drivers. The most interesting thing is that it is the best experience. There is a motivational speaker in this. Because I realize that I have connections with people.
Neha mixing speed massa less compared to west west I want to dig into what you are saying right now how is the internet changed how indians love obviously there are obvious examples like hinge and whatever tinder literally apps made for dating but what you are saying is that you can make connections when you have these connections eventually it will not be romantic how does that is Instagram a dating app nowadays any app is a dating app if you are a bashi you are a dating app link in below if you are dating then in internet it is not that simple you are popular India's largest love story is PUBG SEMA is the name of the SEMA Sachin Sachin Sachin and their love story PUBG no hinge no tinder PUBG you have eaten in the comments biggest modern love story Indian love story because the borders are crossed like Sony Mahiwal there are many types of internet only these are many there was omega which was a very popular site which was closed there was a lot of space for the owners randomly used to match people randomly used to match people so they are very different from random matching so they are completely connected because lovelessness is the only thing that is connected to each other so if you start like internet like Facebook like social media so the same thing was that when Facebook was initially it was made for a dating app it was made for a tourism tool it was made for a girl it was a hot or not so the internet the things that is built is part of dating so all these things are connected to lovelessness and loneliness so there is a lot of connection that you are looking at loneliness because no one will get me who will end my pain you will end my pain you will end my pain you will end your pain you will end your pain you will end your pain you will end your pain but that is a different thing that is a different thing you might meet someone so this is the first dating app it is a very different tool initially when I saw the first time I saw the girl in the small town there was a girl she used to talk about the girl she used to talk about the girl she used to talk about the girl and then she used to talk about the girl she used to talk about the girl she used to talk about the girl and especially in India society where connections build up male-female there is a lot of difficulty especially cast-tywide if society is strong cast-based, religion, etc so all the filters so the dating app is a tool promise that you can be international in that sense, India, and I think you can feel international, so that you promise, you will only know that it ends, you get a good rhythm and that's a different way to go together. I think one thing has happened at least maybe in small circles, dating has become mainstreamized. So I think in my generation and even maybe Gen Z I think at least in our circles Ketumara Gelfand by a friend is seen to be quote unquote normal. But I think in my parent generation it was a radical thing. My families have loved marriages, it was very hard to get married or with a young age, it was not like a normal thing. So I think even in my parent generation most marriages were a range marriage. So one thing has happened, I want to end, sorry you say something. Even in my generation like if I look at my college days and all that time engineering college days when I used to study, that time love was not that common like 14 February, go to Bajrang Dalik protest, you will be closed. Once I almost got attacked that we were sitting there for 14 February, they hit the sheep, many of them were in the village, where was the village? The main main village was central area, where they were, and where were the people. I was also going to the village.

ORE beginningsина ti生íd but she is Ms fourth Ella She was to the Facebook page spoke only 1979 Banjo Videos Podcasts today or in general the right wing that is speaking as you know the endruted sense of the pair of two levels go down to our society's morality. That is a thing. And in fact, it is such a dirty thing that today I see that a girl from a Twitter dance video. I am saying that she is a young girl who is doing this. And when she does this, she is a professional dancer. That is what is new. And she is a popularist. This is a thing that is becoming popular. And this is going to become nuclear when AI and deepfakes are all coming. I am going to end off with the last question. This has been a fascinating discussion. We have largely concentrated on young people, some of our ages. I want to change that a bit. And I also want you to unpack how internet culture is affecting older people like boomers, 50 plus I will give you one example from my life. So, you have locked on Shuruwa and we can even discuss this fascinating thing. We got my nani a tablet for the first time. And my nani is quite well connected to the world. She reads a lot of news. She watches a lot of news. She reads a lot of novels in Bingooli but she is very well connected. And she has a tablet and unfortunately the first thing that she has been a remarkable intelligent woman is that she became a SSR. She is completely a YouTuber. She became this absolute raising SSR. And she believed, I mean I cannot blame her because she had no filter. She had no defense. She believed all the conspiracy theories. And there was no check. YouTube just feeds you these, once you take one step and then it just pulls you in, sucks you in. And she is like 82. So, give you an example. And how is this impacting older people? What is your view? What do you see in your life as your role as a creator? I mean generally I have seen that in a social media, in general, in towns, I have seen people in my ass, in japur, even in internet, maybe it is true. So, this was interesting. When a congressman was on a TV, he called me when he was on a TV. He said that Narendra Modi has been declared the most stupid Prime Minister of the world. So, he asked me what is his opinion. He said, we have seen it on Google. We have seen it on Google. So, he said that if you search Google, you will find out that if you search Google, you will find out that there is no error. So, he also had information about Google. He said that Google is something. And Google is an authority. He said that it is true. That is something. He said that if you want to tell me something, Anurag, a Supreme Court judgment has just been cut. He has used it as mentioned on Google.com and it is a judgment. So, just to give you how big this issue is, right. That is what we call the snake. 99% of Indians are idiots. So, there is a card, so there is one thing. But in general, you can see the people of Boulder. You can see the card through. They think that the Internet is an authority that is published. They know that the user generated things in the Internet is basically Google. Google is an authority that is being said by the press. Google is saying that Google is not saying anything. Google will be doing whatever they want to do. So, he said that Jaynu will be studying in Delhi. He said that he is not an international. And he said that he is an international. He said that he is talking on YouTube. He said that he is not 100% convinced or so. But he has a lot of data in his mind. That he is an international. Anybody can know that the basic education of the Internet is that the Internet is navigated or what is done. It has to be thought of. All of them have to be thought of. If it is a ruling party, it benefits the whole misinformation campaign. They are a master of it in terms of information bombardment. Now how to solve it? How to solve the misinformation? There are many fact checkers. They are not at that level. Anyone who is watching someone at home or checking the fact check, he is not doing anything. The Twitter has done a little bit of the thing. You can put the fact check on the tweet or the other tweet. But the community is very small. The misinformation in the society is very real. And because of this, there are many problems in the narrative building. So I think critical thinking is very important. We have seen it from the society that we are seeing critically. And we are seeing it from the perspective of the people. But at least you have a critical viewpoint of things. Whatever is there, I have not been to anything. Whatever it is. I have seen it from the perspective of everything. Critical thinking is in our perspective. If we think about it, how to get it? Critical thinking is important. We are not going to give our information by this. That is the question. Thank you so much, Anurag. This was a fascinating, fascinating discussion on internet, culture in India. And no better person than Anurag to help unpack it. Go check out Anurag's work in case in the off-chance that you have in trend. Wait for his book on internet culture.
