Speaker 3Welcome back to Giddy Up, boys. Great to catch up with Dean Evans from Winning Edge Investments, winningedgeinvestments.com, professional betting education, tips and ratings so you can treat your betting like an investment. Well, Woven was great for us there last week for the Dean Evans followers. And let's hope we can continue on his terrific form for one of the biggest days of the year, if not the biggest. It's Caulfield Cup Day in Everest Day. Hello to you, Dino. Good morning, Gareth. How are you going? And geez. That first race, too, last week, a forced march. It was a big effort at $14.
Speaker 4Yeah, charged home down the outside. Just ran out of time. Couldn't get there in time, but it was a big run. It was good value each way, Beth. And it's pretty handy horse.
Speaker 3Let's get your insights, mate, for some of these feature races. We'll start off with the Caulfield Cup. Bet $3.65. It's Cosmic Crusader at $5. Saran at $8. It's Wine Dark Sea, now equal third favourite with St. George. Both at $8.50. And Vajar at $11. Half Yours, $13. Royal Supremacy, $15. The Euphrates and Jujica Bow, yet to get a start at both $15. She's a Hustler, $17. Starford at $21. I hope he wins at 20-1. And then Treasure of the Moment at $26. And Kingswood, who was excellent last week, at $26, along with Kings Valley. Who wins the Caulfield Cup, Dean?
Speaker 4Yeah, look, obviously, really interesting Caulfield Cup with a lot of the chances drawn. Wide. I'm taking a set against the Naturalism form. It just didn't sort of rate well enough on the times for me. It's the likes of St. George and Saran. I'll be betting around. And Cosmic Crusader back on a dry track and drawing $17, although he rates really well. You know, also, again, just having to bet around him at the price. I do think the best of the internationals is Wine Dark Sea. Obviously, a shocker draw there out in $19. But they're talking about getting cut of it. It's just the way I see it. The map, if the Euphrates doesn't get a run, then I think they have to push forward on Wine Dark Sea and see if they can lead. Because otherwise, he could get posted. But he's a really high-quality horse. Beat Dubai on a pretty comfortably at-weight parade last start. And if he gets luck in the running, I think Wine Dark Sea, hard to beat. And probably the only other rods I'd be interested in backing at the price is Royal Supremacy. He's just, you know, he's settling much, much better than last year. He was a pretty immature type of horse last year and yet managed to win a Metropolitan. And then. Only get beat two and a half lengths in the Caulfield Cup. So, you know, I think as a more seasoned six-year-old now, Royal Supremacy profiles really well. And she's a hustler of the best value. I think Ruffy finally getting back onto sort of a dry track. Her dry track runs have been really good. She's just had no luck. She's either been on bog-heavy tracks or she's sort of been, you know, chasing the pride of Jenny. Or, you know, just hasn't really had the right sort of profile. And she's probably the other one I think at value who's going to get a really nice run in transit.
Speaker 3So, wine, dark sea, Royal Supremacy and the best Ruffy. She's a hustler in the Caulfield Cup for Dean Evans. And then we go to the St. Leger. Another race you want to have a look at. Race four tomorrow. A couple of key scratchings here. Anthra Side and Juju Cabot come out. So, the favourite So You Are is at $3. Bella Montana at $6. Klondike at $6.50. And then the Budgie Smuggler at $6.50. And Piggyback at $9. At the Bass Can at $11. New look. It's a $12 chance. Sam Hawkins at $17 here. Who do you like in this race?
Speaker 4Yeah, look, I just think there's a lot of stays here out of four. You know, Klondike's in the market, but it's second up off a 440-day break. Piggyback, the Budgie Smuggler, Sam Hawkins are all not going that well. Bella Montana hasn't been able to win a week at the company. You've got So You Are there. He's been winning, but it's sort of beating the B graders and C graders really. And the one I thought that was valued around $11 each way was out of Baskin. And, you know, it doesn't win out of turn. But I thought his run in the Metrop was really good. He got well back and ran past, you know, the likes of Solar Spain and Deacon. He ran a better race than Green Spaces. He's in the Caulfield Cup. He was hitting the line really well. He gets Zach Burton here, which is a huge, huge positive jockey change for any rider, really. Although, you know, it's been a while since we've seen at a Baskin win. He loves the soft conditions. He's sort of been around the money. Mark and some of these really good racers recently, you know, Moonee Valley Gold Cups and Sydney Cups. He's sort of been in the minor placings. And he was just the one that was running home. And I thought of each way odds at around $11 in the field of just out-of-form stayers. He might be the one that bobs up.
Speaker 3There you go. And the OTI colours with Zach Burton riding for O'Shane Charlton. So, Ather Baskin in the St. Ledger. And now we'll have a look at the feature race, the Everest. And we've bet $3.65. He's $1.50 carrying rising. Tempted $5. Jimmy Starr, $15. Jolly Starr, $16. Ninja, $17. Blue Door, $29. Headwall has had some backing at a price that's halved its quote now from $61 to $31. Giga Kick, $40 to $1. Spicy Martini, $40 to $1. And then Angel Capital at $61. Savvy Halley at $100 to $1. And Cabela's at $150 to $1.
Speaker 4Yeah, look, we follow Jimmy Starr. This prep, he's just tried like a superstar all prep. And he was just so impressive in the Manicato. I looked at his run in the Everest last year. He was three wide, no cover on a really dry track. He only got beaten sort of 1.3 lengths by carrying rising there. He gets his preferred wet conditions here. And I think he's going even better this year with that Manicato win. So, I thought Jimmy Starr was a really great each-way bet. I was also really impressed with Ninja. He trialed, another that trialed really, really well. And I tipped him. And here, you know, the group two missile first up. And then he just had no luck second up. He was four wide, no cover. And that trial, you know, I've got to follow the trials. And he was just really good there against Kalyan Rising. And, you know, we're obviously betting against a champion. It's not a race where you're going to totally unload when you've been against a champion. But he's got that, you know, heavy or very soft conditions to contend with. We're guessing a bit with him in terms of how he's going to handle that. And I just think there's a couple of horses. There are Jimmy Starr and Ninja that are high quality, will handle the wet track. And, you know, if Kalyan's wheels are spinning a little bit, then you're certainly getting huge odds about a couple of very, very high quality sprinters.
Speaker 3That is fascinating. A couple of the judges are taking on Kalyan Rising tomorrow. So, what price do you think he'll start?
Speaker 4It probably ends up, depends on what the track sort of ends up. If it remains heavy, then I think he, you know, gets towards, $1.80, $1.90. If it's softish, then, you know, maybe $1.70, $1.80 type thing. But I think, I think it really depends on how that track's drying and how horses in the early race would perform. If it seems like the type of day where real wet trackers are winning, then people would take a set against him. But if it seems like most horses are getting through it okay,
Speaker 3then I guess they come for him again. In the Silver Eagle Race 8, this is the other race you want to touch on there at Randwick. Skyhook 290. AWAC 320 Decorum, $8, and then Plaintiff at $12. Platinum Pantheon, the Kiwi, at $15 here, Dean.
Speaker 4Yeah, look, Skyhook is a horse we've followed ever since he was a two-year-old. He's always trawled really, really nicely, trawled brilliantly before this prep. And we're backing him in both his V.O. marks and Shannon Stakes' wins where he's been really dominant. But the interesting thing about Skyhook is he's even better on a rain-affected track. It's probably surprised me how well, how well he's run on really bone-drys in his first two runs, but he absolutely loves a rain-affected track, and that probably negatively impacts those rivals, including Baywalk. So I think Skyhook is extremely hard to beat here, maps beautifully, and just looks really difficult to beat. I thought the one at value horse that also just looked like a really high-quality trawler and was going to have a really good prep was Plaintiff. First up, sort of had to run against the bars. Had to hook wide. Was only beaten sort of less than a length by Savi Halley, who runs in the Everest, and Lazzuro, who then bolted in at its next run. And then she just sort of got stuck on the fence, I think, there for a while in the premiere. The fence was off that day. Track was a bit gluggy, and she didn't handle it. But she has won, you know, a PGA Bell Group 3 on a wet track before Plaintiff. And so I thought there was one to sort of jump out of the ground at double-figure odds. It was Plaintiff, but Skyhook certainly very, very hard to beat.
Speaker 3And then you've got a Friday fill-up for us at Launceston Race 3 tonight.
Speaker 4Yeah. There's a horse here at pretty good each way odds around $6.50 called Warrior Smile. He was early on, he ran for the Hayes brothers and he was running well at sort of Saturday Metro and listed level. And then he just went off the boil and he's gone to Tasmania. He's trained by John Blacker now and it's having his first run for him. And he's run sort of plus 4.3 lengths above standard last 600 in his first trial and plus 9.8 last 600 in his second trial. He's only beaten a neck by the odds on favourite in this race and trialled just as well as it. So I thought he matched really well here from an inside gate. Should get a good run and like backing these horses when they trial well off their first run for a new train. That's a Warrior Smile each way. Hopefully he can give us a nice healthy bank to get stuck into Saturday.
Speaker 3Jeez, I love that. He's a great trainer, Johnny Blacker. Warrior Smile, $6 each way all day at Launceston, race three, number two. The former Lindsay Park train galloper. Dean, you're flying at the moment, mate. We appreciate your time as always on Giddy Up and enjoy tomorrow.
Speaker 4Yeah, thanks. And thanks for having me. Yeah, you can listen. We'll be hearing an ad popping up in the next couple of weeks for a competition that we'll be running to win a couple of tickets to the marquee worth around $3,000 on Stakes Day, Champions Day. Okay. How good is that? And ownership in Vauban and whatever he runs in in November. So that'll be, we'll be hearing that shortly.
Speaker 3Love that, mate. Thanks for your time, Dino. Cheers, Gareth. There's Dean Evans from Winning Edge Investments. We'll take a break. Nick Ashman to join me next.
