Dr. Twin, long distance calling, Carmemoy. And yes. But we're kicking off with a track from Frank Coducci. His latest album, Sheeple, came out earlier this week. And the track I've got lined up for you's cold and limits are freedom. I run the seas around the world, looking for more freedom. Each and every day I fool around and enjoy myself. (upbeat music) Frank Carducci and the Fantastic Squad from their latest album, Sheeple, which came out officially on the 10th of April, but they did have an album launch on the 8th of April at WoodjaBelieve the legendary Kevin Club in Liverpool. Couldn't make it myself, but I gather a good number of you did. If you've never seen Frank Live, you do not know what you're missing. Surely one of the most entertaining acts on the Prog scene at this moment in time. They'll be playing at Winters End on Saturday. Obviously by the time you hear this, they'll have already played, but they are doing a tour and I think we're going to see them on June the 4th at the Robin, but an incredible band and what a performer. Love Frank, love that band. On the same day that Frank's album came out, Sheeple saw the release of the third album from a band called Realisee, R-E-A-L-I-S-E-A, Realisee. They're from the Netherlands because they're their third album. It's called Scratch and the truck I've got lined up for you. It's called Out of My Mind. It's called Tarot. And obviously it's a concept album based around the Tarot card. Yes, that wonderful thing that can predict the future, tell you all about yourself, your soul, your spirit, and anything else you wish to know if you believe that kind of thing. And if you enjoy the band renaissance, you're going to absolutely love this album. A lot of orchestra going on in there. There's a lot of hidden depths. And Christina's voice just, well, is just the best I've ever heard. You will absolutely love it. From their latest album, that was strength. Hope you enjoyed that. Now, I think there must be some kind of cosmic significance about April the 10th, because the next three tracks are all instrumental. And the first two came out on, you believe, April the 10th. And the third one comes out this coming week on the 15th. Our first track comes from long, distant calling from Germany. Their latest album, The Phantom Void, came out two days ago. On the mystical April the 10th. And the track from that particular album is called Not Turn-All. And then following up with that, we have Richard Barbieri, who some of you will know was originally with the band Japan, who later become the, what you would call the sound engineer, I would say, on the porcupine tree albums, an absolutely incredible synthesis. His latest album, Haunting's Came Out, would you believe on April the 10th? And off that particular album, I've got a track lined up for you called Traveler. And then to finish our trio of instrumental's, we're off over to Germany for a band called Notillus. Their album A Castle Full of Secrets is due at this coming week. And if you've got tickets to see the band on their fourth coming UK tour, you will be very disappointed to know, unless you probably already know, that the tour has been postponed, because Mr Steve Hale has to have an operation. Or as had one, and is in convalescence. I'm not a hundred percent sure. The press release was not exactly forthcoming with all the information. All I know is that the tour has been postponed. So if you've got tickets to see Yes this year, it's going to be postponed till next year. But, but the good news is they have a new album coming out. Now, if you listen to the John Davison interview, a few weeks ago, you may recall the remension they have a new album coming out, but he couldn't tell me anymore, because it was top secret, and he was under oath to keep it a secret. Well, two days ago, would you believe on the 10th of April, they released a track from their fourth coming album, the track called Aurora, and the album's called Aurora. It's the title track, and I've got it for you now. The woman is a legend, love it a bit, hope you enjoyed your time with her. But now within this part of the show, I've got a lot to pile in before the end, including our current band of the moons. But we kicked off with Canadian band Crownlands. Now you may have thought it was Greta van Fleet. And who could blame you for thinking that? But their new album Apocalypse comes out on May the 15th. I did play the title track from it a few weeks ago. I hope you enjoyed that. There's a very obvious rush influence going on with this band. And the fact they come from Caledir as well, what can I say? It was inevitable. Well, early this week I had the pleasure of speaking to the guys. And I've got that interview for you now. Now we did it over Zoom. And Zoom has been a bit of a bitch in that it kept freezing. So we had to keep reestablishing the connection. But I've managed to cobble the interview together by chopping and changing and cutting and pasting and so on. So I hope it makes sense. But a lovely couple of guys and as I say in the interview I would dearly love to get them over to the UK because they are a force to be reckoned with. Okay, so we'll have the interview and I'll catch you on the other side. Okay guys, well I've got the distinct pleasure today of speaking to a band that I've known about for a couple of years. But you may not have heard of but they're certainly making waves in the prog world. I'm talking to Kevin and Cody from Crownland. How are you doing guys? Great man. Thanks for having us. No problem at all. Now obviously I've been aware of you guys. I can say for a couple of years but some of our listeners may not have come across you. Do you want to give us a potty of history of how you guys got together? And obviously came up with the name and the fact that you both multi instrumentalists? Thanks, yeah, I'll give it to Kevin. Wow, all right. This never happens. I don't know what to say. So yeah, so we're Crownlands. We're a progressive rock duo from originally from Osho, Ontario, which is an interesting automotive town. And basically we met, I crashed on addition years ago, hanging out with just a good buddy of mine who was an amazing guitar player. He was auditioning for a band. Cody was playing drums and at the time. And so I cheekily showed up and stole the gig from my buddy. I didn't even play guitar at the time. I was mostly a bass player and a keyboard player. But Cody and I got along really well. And then we, you know, that band didn't quite work out. I ended up touring with this other artist. And this guy Tim really took me under his wing and showed me how to make it in the music industry. Because he had had a lot of success to the point where he had bought an a condo just with the proceeds of playing music. And I was, how do you do this? Still haven't quite figured that one out yet. But, but you know, I was able to kind of learn as much as I could from my good friend. And then I came back with all of these visions in my head and I pulled Cody into a jam session. And I was like, this is it. Man, this is, this is, you know, we got to do this for, you know, full on. And Cody and I jumped into both feet and God, 10 years later, we're still doing it. Sometimes I wonder, how are we getting away with this? Particularly on the last tour we just did was fantastic. We had done an evening with a theater tour in Canada. So first time headlining doing saucy theaters across our province. And it was just amazing. You know, we did this three hour show with three distinctly different sets. And it just grew in evolve in such a way. And it feels like finally 10 years into it. We're finally actualizing a lot of the visions and the dreams that we had at the very beginning. And even though, you know, to quote our own music from the oracle, yeah, we've come a long way. It's still so far yet to go. But it feels like finally this band is turning a bit of a page. Because as you say, Steve, you know, we've, we've certainly, you know, made a larger impact in the Prague world than we ever had hoped to. And we've never had hoped to in the mainstream rock world because I think cynically, you know, we started the band, issuing a lot of the Prague influence that we had. And we pushed into a lot more of the radio rock. Simple kind of beer commercial music that was really popular at the time. And we achieved a little bit of success in radio playing. And we were signed to Universal Music Canada over the success of a band like Red of End Fleet, right? And every five to 10 years that happens, right? One band explodes. Then the major label signed 10 or 12 other bands. No. And we were finally allowed to do what we wanted to do. And we went down to National and re-recorded context, we're the part one with Nick Raskylinets. And that was Universal making a concession because we had originally recorded that eight minutes song with Terry Brown. And they were like, this sounds too retro. It doesn't quite work. And the concession was we go and work with someone to make it a little bit more modern and crispy. All of a sudden making space progressive rock music we got onto the Rolling Stone and we received a lot of attention from people that were into the music and that was a big aha moment and then of course we leave even further into that with fearless and put out an 18-minute song and promptly were dropped from universal and so it was not the success that we had hoped the way that Rush did with 2112 in 1976 as you know progressive rock does not work as well in 2023 as it did in 1976 however we followed our muse we followed our hearts and yeah and and now we have seemed to have landed on our feet now that we are with inside out music and they've given us the confidence and the courage to tread forward with you know the ritual records and the apocalypse record and you know we've been able to lean into the lore the storytelling the world building that we've always wanted to and played the kind of music that we want to and even though the audience for it is much smaller and more niche it just feels like we finally are able to yeah able to do exactly what we want to do and again we'll figure out the money later but here we are we are surviving the rent is getting paid and we are playing 20-minute songs about dragons and outer space so we're doing all right Steve Excellent obviously you signed with inside out as you say June last year would you say that was a major step in you know achieving what you were trying to do yeah absolutely I mean they are tapped into the whole community and they helped us get on this beautiful cruise cruise to the edge and meeting them there was fantastic and it really felt like we're cemented in the prox fear now for real yeah because we've always been like one of those crossover bands where if we play especially in Canada right where it's just kind of a wasteland of very beige middle of the road rock music and whenever you go on you know whenever you go and play a festival it's very much like you know here's the scenery can on the dock otter's core kind of stuff and then we show up and we're the weirdest thing on the bill whereas at cruise to the edge we were very much the more yeah the more accessible side of the Prague world where you know because we come from obviously coating that we love Osiric tentacles and gentle giant however I think a lot of our musical aspirations do kind of like total line between the the more esoteric and the more accessible and we are we you know we are definitely more of like the rush side of Prague where we are a sucker for a good chorus just as of much whiz we are big suckers for the crazy middle eight where everything's in seven you know yeah and try to strike that balance you always yeah I mean the obvious link is rush you know anybody hearing you for the first time it's like well these guys are totally inspired by rush we just say they are your biggest inspiration yeah I would say for sure without a doubt they're the biggest influence on our music and they always really have been but we've only really have to do it since context fearless part one which ironically we've written before first album anyways and our label and our at you know it was like oh this isn't right for you guys and I'm like I think it is we have to do the thing and we played our dues and we got our chance to do it and it felt right because I've listened to the new album a few times and I hear a lot going on here rush oh yeah Greta van Fleet with the vocals and obviously Zeppelin you know there's a lot of retro going on in there and I know that a lot of proggers you know they tend to sort of stay tuned to the old 70s 80s vibe and is that what you're trying to jump into yeah man I mean I really love like the old school 70s vibe it's like to me it's my favorite Kev loves the 80s vibe so together we make a good blend of the two loves of those sides it's remarkable how those two decades are so significantly different in terms of like musical production aesthetic and they their shadows still loom over everything modern where absolutely there's our kind of those interesting like the opposed camps of 70s versus 80s oh for sure I mean I'm a big sucker for 80s Prague you know I love I love me some Abacab and you know and drama and you know and like I love how our windows yeah I love all of it however I definitely favor toward the 70s vibe yeah yeah it's no longer progressive rock Steve it's just regressive rock it is right it's true we've got a guy who comes to our festival who's I think mid to late 20s and he's a total proghead so I was talking to him and he said his dad played him foxtrot when he was six and I said that is absolutely amazing and we were at a festival in September last year and he was there with his dad and I went up to him and I went man all you you know you've basically generated the next level of Prague you know we've got the next generation of Prague you know and we need bands like you guys you know to keep it alive because you know the time on it's bands you know they're all sort of but they've been nasty they they're getting on a bit now I mean they've just had the yes tour of the UK because Steve Aves I mean an operation you know and I think that all becoming of a certain age and I think the fact that we've got you guys we've got bands like District 97 dim gray you know kairos you know that's the next generation of Prague I think right thanks yeah I agree I think you're missing hallis in that in that list of fantastic bands wearing the prod torch obviously you know the hey kin is great wobbler of course but they've been around a lot of time chronicles of father robin are fantastic I mean and Jean de Poitrine obviously they're more in the the math rock thing but again it's just you know there's a lot of really great music coming out brass camel fantastic band also for Canada more in the zappa gentle giant sphere of just wild fungalade and Prague that doesn't take itself too seriously there's a lot of really great really great music obviously blood incantation if you're into the heavier thing and that's the coolest part about it is that's just what we know there's so much more under the crust under the the the surface the crust yeah it's amazing what would you what would you what would you first uh you'd be proud you know how did you actually they're like that guy it was I'd fuck struck when he was sick yeah I got a similar I got a similar story so my dad is a drummer as well and he introduced me to rush like before I could even walk in super cool so he used to play like um he used to play rush he used to play like 2112 on the drum kit in the basement and I was like a baby sitting on my butt in the basement just watching him play with your protection and then it blew my mind and from that point I was obsessed with rush rush is like a household family name in the house and um and just drumming in general he inspired me to play drums and also get into Prague and from that point on I would only listen to rush into high school and I was I was so picked on as a kid because I literally was just I would refuse to listen to other shit other than like I would listen to the classic rock station and the car and stuff but when I was putting on a record it was only rush all the time yeah well I've never really been hip of the you know and I think you know growing up you know hats off to you for standing by your guns you know when you know everyone else was probably into Metallica and Pantena well they were like rapping pop and stuff and I was like screw you guys I like rush good for you but I got 2112 and here we are you know they're coming back to do their comeback tour and I think every single day to stalled out you know it's crazy it's crazy so what does that tell you you know the world is hungry for progressive rock absolutely now you've recently done it completely the tour which I think finished last Monday when you two would come in ahead you that go lovely great man it was the first first tour with no logistical nightmares because you know we've toured with Greta van fleet we've toured with kiss we've toured with primus we've done our own headlining stuff every single time we go on tour there's some kind of absolute insanity that befalls the band as I'm sure you know it's like you just look at spinal top right and all the chaos that happens all of that is true and then some of the absolute wild shit that happens on the road and luckily that was the You know, this was the first time where nothing crazy really happened. It was a success through and through. The shows were sold great. The merch sales were amazing. We played, I think the best that we have ever. It's the first time doing evening with shows. So we open up for ourselves in disguise, which is a bit from. There it is. We're so, you know, it was really fun. Just to kind of try on all these different, these different things. You drew a guitar tech in an inflatable dragon suit. And we slayed, yeah, and we slayed him during these three. Epic dragon ballads. So that was really fun. You know, it was very theatrical production. We brought in all these set pieces and we did a multiple costume changes. It was just the first time we were able to really bring this vision to life. And our manager, you know, our manager, Oli, who's been with us for the better part of like nine years, sent us a really lovely note where, you know, he was really nice for him to kind of see in the audience. The reaction that everything got, but also for him to kind of see our vision finally come to life, where, you know, being a band, playing this kind of music, usually the best kind of break you can get as a support act. And again, as I said, we've done that we've done the circuit with all of these huge bands playing arenas. And, you know, you drive for eight hours, you set up for two hours and you play for half an hour, and then you tear down for two hours and drive for another eight hours. And that's touring. And so it was just so nice to be able to do like a full three hour production and actually play a bigger chunk of our music. And, um, yeah, it was just really, it was a really great tour. And I think the band, the band is Cody and I, but the band, the band is fired up. We're very excited. You know, yeah, we all are. Yeah. You know, Cody and I will go into rehearsing and be like, okay, now just the two of us, but like really what will mean is life will just do like a tarant vocals just to get like the top line, right? They're like, okay, we'll bring the other guys in and then Cody will play the drums and I'll play it. Like the bass part in the keyboard parts. And it's like, um, like walk out the door. Yeah, but yeah, but there is, you know, um, difference there. There is a great thing to be said though, right? You know, if the song works with just the vocals and guitar, then you know, it's a good song. And I think we, we put into that a lot on this record. But anyways, I digress. The tour was amazing, Steve. I love every minute of it. It felt great. Everyone wore multiple hats, you know, uh, Graham, our front of house guy also was doing monitors. Even came up and played percussion with us in disguise in the wizard row, played drums on the way to song when Cody came out front. Everyone's pulling multiple, multiple duties, you know, because that's reality of playing progressive rock. You know, like I, um, I was doing production management tour management and managing all the merch. And it felt great, you know, that feeling of like you can't take a breath until the show is over and that feeling of, um, there's a reason why we, you know, like to get the, uh, why we multi instant, we're multi, why exactly is it? How do you keep the bad thoughts away? It's so busy. Obviously, when you record the albums, obviously, just the two of you, there's obviously multi tracking and so on. Yeah, yeah. When you recorded the albums, did you ever think that you'd have to go out live and tell the hell are we going to do this? Yeah, for sure. But like, there was every time, like, yeah, there was like a concerted, like, effort to be like, you know what? This time, we're not going to worry about what we're going to do live. This album is going to live forever. And this is, this is the album. We're going to figure it out. We're going to make an arrangement for two people. We're going to play it with our buddies. So like, just throw, throw everything in the kitchen, and make it as cool as possible because the art comes first, you know, like with our past records, we were super concerned. Me, especially, it to be like, hey, we need to pull this off live. So know this, know this. We have to like, reign it in, but for apocalypse, we were like, screw it. We're just going to make wicked music and we're going to figure it out. Yeah, I think the art's better for. Yeah, exactly. The album lasts forever, but the band line up and change. With the new album, Apocalypse, which is due out on May the 15th, you release the title track on February the 6th, which is somewhat of an epic, was there was a particular reason for really, you know, releasing the longest track on the album. Yeah, statement piece, baby. Yeah, declaration of intent, you know, and that's, that's why we're here. We're here to make epics, baby. Yeah, it's like, it's like, here's the big song. Dig into it, chew on it, listen to the, read the lyrics, listen to it a thousand times. Actually, give it attention because if it came out with the rest of the record, statistically, people aren't going to listen to it as much. It's just going to get glossed over. And because it's the name of the record, we want people to listen to it first and foremost. And it also was like, hey, here's our first big Prague record with inside out. Boom, there you go. Excellent. Now going back to touring, you've just completed a tour of Canada. Is there any intention to take it anywhere else like the UK? The will is there. It's almost like what, tell you what Steve, you got any rich uncles who can get us a $10,000. Because that's really, that's really where we're at, man. Playing progressive rock is not a money making endeavor. And every time you go on tour outside of your country, it's usually about a $20,000 loss. And, you know, it's really hard to justify that to, you know, because everyone on our team, managers, labels, touring doesn't build fans anymore the way it used to. And even like five or six years ago before COVID, it was like, it was how you still built a band. And even more, it's very much like a vanity project. It's like, oh, look at me. I can burn money and have fun and bring my friends on vacation vibe. And just because people can't afford to go out and see shows anymore, right? Like it's just a completely different economy of what it was before COVID. And the live music industry is struggling hard, especially at the level that we're at of like the 300 to 500 cab clubs and soft seat theaters. It just doesn't really work. And I don't know, Steve, I mean, we want to do it. But it's just just applying that significant investment into it. And obviously we want to, but we're going to, yeah, we're going to be trying to do it. So, yeah, I think we're going to, I think we're going to try and do a UK run, Europe run. And so, I think we're going to be able to do it. And so, yeah, I think we're going to be able to do it. even in the profit park and it's just about investing that initial. Yeah. And in those initial losses and being willing to play those clubs for loss and eventually the audience will hopefully, you know, the word of mouth spreads and so on it goes. And so many bans these days are hedging their bets and pushing for online virality of, you know, embracing Instagram TikTok, Spotify, YouTube as a way to hopefully get from 500 pounds of show to 2,000 pounds of show and then all of a sudden their first tour is already successful and so I do understand, you know, that's where everyone on our team is urging us to kind of push into there and not embark on a foolish money losing tour but we love it so much, Steve, it's like you become a musician because you want to play, you know, if you want to play music you want to play music live, right? And there's something about the magic that happens out of show that just can't be recreated any other way and when you commune with an audience and everyone is, you know, perceiving the art as the art is being created is a really special thing that I think live only live music can do. Does that make any sense, Steve? Where? Absolutely. You know, to hear a record it's been curated and articulated over the course of many months. You look at a movie and it's, you know, it's the perfect result of years of work, whereas live music is being created and perceived at exactly the same time and no other art, maybe theater I guess, but again, like any of the live arts is just such a special thing and I think that's being lost a lot these days where people just aren't going out to perceive live music the way they used to and as such live music is not being celebrated the way it's. Oh, don't fucking believe this. All of this trickery and people are expecting a certain kind of perfection out of the art that they see because they can only afford to maybe go out to see one or two shows a year and they want it to be perfect and I think that, you know, the imperfections need to be celebrated and that's why we want we got to do it. Yeah. Actressaio audience is younger or older or middle-aged? Our audience is definitely older. Our audience is 99% people who saw yes at Madison Square Gardens in 1974. Wow. You know, like. But that's, but that's Spotify. People don't, people don't listen to, but our Spotify numbers are tiny anyways. Don't look at that. Look at the people who actually come to our shows. Yeah. Yeah. Kev, I think Zoom's been an absolute bitch today, so I think we'll have to draw it to an end unfortunately, but thank you very much for your time. It's been absolutely wonderful.
