DANTE VS VERGIL WAS PEAK?! Devil May Cry Season 2 REVIEW!
104m 13s
The panel opens by celebrating the return of "Devil May Cry" season two on Netflix, with host Dr. Jace and co-hosts Grandmaster, Toasty, and Dr. Mondo. Grandmaster admits he hasn't finished the first game, having been distracted by the Switch 2, but enjoys the show more than the games. The group agrees season two surpasses season one, offering a tighter narrative centered on the brothers Dante and Virgil, whose tragic relationship drives the emotional weight. They praise the improved animation from Studio Mir, noting smoother action sequences and better CGI, particularly in the Dante-versus-Virgil fights, which they call the series' defining moments. The villain Arius is criticized as predictable and less compelling than the White Rabbit from season one, but the expanded lore—including Mundus's role in Eva's death and the ambiguous nature of Sparda—adds depth. The soundtrack is highlighted as a strength, with tracks like "Bodies" and "Afterlife" enhancing key scenes, though the absence of a strong intro theme is a minor gripe. The panel also discusses the Dante and Lady romance, which they find well-executed, and the voice cast, including Robbie Daymond as Virgil and Keith David as Luke. They rate the season highly, with scores ranging from 8.5 to 9.1, and express anticipation for season three, hoping for more focus on Mary's quest against the Jester and potential appearances from Nero. Overall, they see the show as a successful adaptation that honors the games' essence while forging its own path.
[MUSIC] >> There once was a man named Gold Roger, who was king of the pirates. He had fame, power, and wealth beyond your wildest dreams. Before they hung up from the gallows, these were the final words you said. >> Our perspective is yours for the taking, but you'll have to join us first. We left everything we debated at the Uncle Table. >> Ever since, pirates from all over the world set sail for the Grand Line, searching for the Uncle Table, the table that will make their dreams come true. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, everyone. That is the voice of your Uncle host, Dr. Jace attorney. And we return yet again to the demon realm, Makai. This time with season two of Devil May Cry, love it or hate it. Dante's here to stay, baby, with Netflix. And everyone knows Netflix can do no wrong with adaptations. I'm looking at you, Avatar, the last airbender coming out next month. But here we are with season two of Devil May Cry folks. And we got a lot to say, both the good and the bad with the Virgil and Mundis and Arius and Argus Sacks. There's a lot to deep dive into this one. But with me, as always, as fellow Yonko Grandmaster, who? Grandmaster, I know when you watched season one of Devil May Cry, you ended that stream by saying, I'm going to play all the Devil May Cry games. I'm a major fan now, I'm going to start with Devil May Cry one, play Devil May Cry two, three, four, five, even the reboot. It's been a year, it's been a year, where are you right now in your Devil May Cry journey? >> I bought the one through three HD packet, or whatever on the PlayStation Network. I think I'm like 80% done with number one. >> You're still in the first game? >> Absolutely. >> Did you get stuck? Where'd you get stuck? Did you get lost? >> Switch two came out, took up majority of my time. >> Oh, the Mario and Zelda's, I guess. >> Yeah, yeah, and Donkey Kong's. So Dante had to take a back seat, but you know what, it's fine. >> I think I enjoy the show more than the game. So I'm okay so far, having just been more of a fan of the show. I'm okay. >> Okay, I guess so, but. >> Jackpot! >> Reference is wow, actually, you don't know that reference, never mind. >> With me, as well, our fellow Supernovas, Toasty and Dr. Mondo, have you guys been, it's been a while, it's been a while. >> It's been a while indeed, all good, all good over here. Like excited to be here and talk about Devil May Cry season two. It was just the action-packed roller coaster. >> It has, Toasty, I know I had to bug you to watch season two. >> Leslie, she's been so busy playing the Yo-Yo game like I was talking to you guys before. >> That's how I get to go into that. >> Right, so yeah, like all of the shows are falling behind, like so, but I didn't enjoy this show. But I do need to catch up on the other shows, including stuff like before you, which I need to see. >> [LAUGH] >> What are you doing this? >> No need for you. >> He would rather watch you for ya. >> No, you could watch it if you don't need to catch up on the boys, to be fair. >> That too. >> You have to give that to me, that's what's still in our stuff. >> I watched three episodes and I stopped because I got bored. So yeah. >> No, that's, that's bloody. >> Devil May Cry, Euphoria, the boys, you see how my hand is off screen. That's the gap. >> Come on, I'm not bad. >> I'll make that call by myself. >> We could circle back, we could circle back. That's my face. >> Nice, nice. >> Well, Grandmaster, take us away on this journey. >> God, you're making me, I'm not a real fan, I don't want to do this, I don't want to do it. I don't want to talk about the world, I don't want to do this. >> I will do it, I just thought the true fan who's been making all this Devil May Cry content for the past week had more to say, but fine, fine, I will open up this journey. >> I will. >> Dr. Mondo and I see, look, how about this, you're here with the animated series. And Dr. Mondo, myself and Toasty and I, we are connoisseurs of the finer things. We enjoyed the Devil May Cry franchise as a video game. So as a show runner, guide us through the show. And then if you have questions, if you have concerns, comparisons, we can walk you through it. We can tell you what's different, if this is ass, it's good. We can criticize it. >> Well, I would like to find, fine, I would like to then start this off. First of all saying, season two is really good, season two is really good. It's a good sophomore, follow up to season one, I dare say it might be better than season one. I think I just like the focus of this one. For sure, I like the focus on Dante and ladies relationship. Dante and Virgil, actually Virgil was probably the, I think he might have stole the season of anything. But for sure, season two feels a little more focused than season one. And I think per how the season ends, definitely excited to see where it goes next. And, come kind of sad about how it ended. >> Did you cry? >> I didn't cry, but I'm over here when you think about the complexities of what's going on in the head of Virgil. And how Dante might be feeling about it all. I'm like, damn, that's really sad. You know, I can't leave my brother again. I just got you back Virgil, don't leave me again. >> How much did you cry? >> Again, I didn't cry. But there's a lot of empathy going around in this season. Ladies talking about, we're just two tortured kids that found each other. And we see the pain in one another. Dante, you got to let go of the pain. I'm like, my gosh, this is what we've been, Enzo was mentioned in this season. I was like, I didn't think we're going to get an Enzo mentioned. >> References. >> It's not about references, it's about attacking the heartstrings in the right places. So I've very much enjoyed season two like that. Where do you all stand as far as, is it a good follow up to season one? Where are y'all at? >> I definitely enjoyed it, definitely enjoyed it. I think it does have those moments, those emotional moments. And I think it's like, I'm very liberal with a lot of these adaptations in the sense of when they adopt the source material. Because I know some fans, they're like, they made these changes and so forth. I actually like when they sometimes kind of deviate from the source material, because it gives them that originality. And it lets you put that mark on it. And they do, it's like they give it its own flavor without losing the essence. And this show, I think, a great job. >> Yeah, plus the fights are ridiculous, the fights are ridiculous. >> The fights have improved. >> Studio Moore has improved significantly, I think. >> No, yeah, for sure. I mean, I think when you have, like you said, I think Virgil stole the show like he always does. >> That's typical Virgil. >> Yes, he is the storm that is approaching as he always is. >> Yeah, no, I think this season was way more focused. Because that was the thing that was missing with season one. I still like season one, but I get why some people didn't really drive with season one. It was kind of all over the place, a little muddy here and there. You were wondering what kind of store, were they telling a political story about demon immigration coming into the real world? What's really going on here? Once they focus on the brothers in season two, and that dynamic, also with lady. Because now I think lady is a lot better in this season than she was in season one. They were hitting it on all fronts. I liked it. There were some people that I saw online that were pissed over the smallest things. They were pissed at Virgil getting Yamato his sword from Mondis. And they're like, my God, Mondis does not give Virgil Yamato. I hate this, I hate this show. And I'm like, dude, I mean, I'm sure there's a law reason why he gets it from someone else or wherever he gets Yamato from. I really don't care, but for the purposes of the show, it's a purpose. >> It works. >> It works, I don't know, I don't know. Toasty being really quiet over there. I bet he wants something different. Oh my God, I should've known. I like this adaptation, you know? It's the same thing with the Castlevania TV show. It's different sometimes from the source material, but I enjoy it.
it. What it does is good enough for me. And yeah, the games are, I guess if you're a big kind of the games, you can argue. Oh, I don't want this because the game I'm blah, blah, blah. I don't really care for that because for example, I like the DMC game. Oh, God. There was a DMC review. The reboot. The reboot. They're gonna cook you in the comments. They can cook me all they want. They won't do anything because to me, like, I'm gonna judge it by myself, like I judge DMC by myself. And it was an enjoyable series. Like for me, the fights are amazing. I said it before multiple shows. Like for me, when I watch a show, especially a show like this, I like to see the bloody animation. Like, so I like the gourd effect. The gourd was well done. Yes, the gourd does work in certain things. Like, obviously, like, can you imagine there was no blood in this? It looked dumb. And they did a, the animation looks smooth. And obviously, studio murder, like, I can't forget what they were. And so I looked it up. And I was like, oh, that's right. They also did that. I'm a tour animated movie that I got leaked. That was amazing that I watched that I have. Well, I don't have it, by the way. So don't come up to me. But you don't know things like this. So the animation was like, I like it. And I'm looking forward to their next show. So there's that too. Yeah, no, if we could get Devil May Cry season three next year, that would be great. No, it's not even Devil May Cry season three. I'm actually looking up to see what other shows the studio is doing. Oh, studio murder. Yes, studio murder, because obviously, they're doing like my adventures with Superman. That's a good one. X-Men, 97. X-Men, 97. They did ring lantern show. They did rise with the man hunters. No, I'm doing a green lantern. Oh, they're doing something. Oh, yes, they're doing my adventures with Green Lantern. Oh, that's right. That's right. It's a spinoff of my adventures of Superman. They're also doing a Witcher movie. It's called Witcher sirens of the deep. Well, yeah, they're also doing something else called Gosu, GOSU, it's a manoa that I read like years ago. They're going to Gosu adaptation. Yes, they are. So that wouldn't be Z tier. So that one's going to be good. That one's probably going to be good. Oh, I'm excited about that too. Another one they've done. I think they did Star Wars vision. They've they've done a Star Wars vision. Yep. Oh, you mean the multiple colors, I get a new anthology. Yeah, yeah. They're track records speaks for itself. Yeah. And I do think with Devil May Cry, it hasn't proved. I know last time we talked about the show, some of the CGI was kind of wonky. Yeah. I think it's still not perfect, but it's simply better this time around. Like the double triggers look pretty good. I would say they look a lot better. Yeah. I noticed there were a lot of scenes and season one where like like Dante on the motorcycle on the highway. A lot of that was CGI. The demons and those and some of those fights were CGI. The red and the blue one. Specifically, I remember. Right. But now they they really limited it to like, I saw some demons in the background have it at one point, but it was barely noticeable. And then the double triggers still have it, but it's improved. Like you can barely tell in season two that they have 3D animation. It's really smooth. It's very smooth. Like all the action sequences, they're very, very smooth. Yeah. I mean, shoot. Let's have what we continue with the action bits, because if I had to pick the best action bit, I guess I'd have to give it to the Dante versus Virgil moments of the show, right? Those are the best scenes. This is what defines the series for the most part is Dante and Virgil. Everyone wants to see Dante. Well, everyone wants to see Virgil and everyone wants to see Dante, like, you know, clash heads with him, clash blades, um, and any game they appear in. And if that if that didn't work, if they somehow fumbled the bag doing Dante versus Virgil in this season, then you really know there's no hope for this series. Because how do you fumble the most hype moment in the franchise? Hell, there's probably going to be multiple hype moments if the series keeps going past season two. This is not the last time these guys are going to fight. They're going to keep fighting. Oh, boy. Cause I mean, uh, specifically on top of the clean animation of this one, because they did twice. They fought twice. Uh, you know, there's a lot of emotion in these fights. Like, um, and I'm over here watching like specifically the first one. And I'm like, man, it's on site, you know, haven't seen your brother in X amount of years and he's, you don't want to talk Virgil. You don't want to talk to your brother. You just like out of my way, Dante or out of my way, little brother. And I'm over here thinking, what, what siblings are like this, um, in fiction. Uh, I'm over here comparing is Dante and Virgil. The next best, like, pair of just like sibling rivalry. Uh, I wanted you to throw out some sibling rivalries that could rival that of Dante and Virgil. Okay. Okay. Okay. Zula and Zuko hands down. Is that what you wanted to say? That's a great one. That is a great one. And I'm glad I didn't say it. Well, not a, uh, not a rivalry in itself, but Sasuke Tachi. That's on site. Oh, it was on site at one point. At one point. Yeah. I feel that's a good one. I feel that's great. So that's why you like this. It reminded you of things you're already familiar with. Hold up, Dr. Jase. Give us one. Give us a sibling rivalry. I was thinking of Sasuke and Tachi. He already said it. Dr. Mundo said it. Come up with a better one or another one. There's not a lot of a sibling rival reason. I don't know. There's none in you. Haka show. There's none in bleach. Um, none of that. See, it's fun though when you think about it because it is. Oh, set show Meru in a Yasha. Boom. No one watches it. That's the one. I mean, yeah. You guys are watching a Yasha. Yeah. I, I haven't, but I know of that one. I do know of it. That was a good one. That was a good one. Yeah. Um, but yeah, no, I just, um, I was, I, it's something about sibling rivalries that kind of add a nice little layer, especially when they come in to blows with one another. So I found that super fun. Just to watch as far as, you know, uh, I said, how many good movie or TV show scenes have a very prominent scene, uh, at the Lincoln Memorial. And I was like, it was Forrest Gump when he reunited with Jenny. It was, um, planet of the apes were Mark Wahlberg saw the ape on Lincoln's head. But now Dante and Virgil have topped it. Nothing else matters as all that matters is Dante and Virgil versus each other at the Lincoln Memorial. Oh my god. Then they cut off Lincoln's head. I know they damaged it. I know they damaged that monument, but who cares? Right. It destroyed it. Yeah. That's what I can rebuild it. It's easy. I just, I, I just find it funny because now I'm going to associate like, when next time I go to DC, I'll be like, well, I'm gonna stand in front of Lincoln. I'm doing. Virgil. Fall. Hell yeah. You're gonna side with the monster that killed me. I do think though, the majors stand out point between if we were to put their relationship to fight scenes, um, when they had that, uh, Kakashi Obito moment where they're flashback into that, uh, sparring match they had. Oh, like, the set, like, the last fight is so good. This reminds me of Naruto. Oh, it's okay, though, because I need Sean, I need Sean. Car clearly is drawing influence and inspiration. Hands down. Funny enough, there are some scenes where he just straight up copy pace, like certain sequences. Um, like, uh, clearly, there's references to the Obito and Kakashi, uh, fight. There's a blatant copy, like a copy pace scene where when Dante has Ebony and Ivory for the first time and he's spinning them on his like fingers, that whole sequence shot for shot is taken from like an actual live action, uh, I think YouTube video or, or, or, or Corio person and people, yes, yeah, no, shot for shot. It is not like, wow, he was inspired, but it's shot for shot. The same, same camera angles, same movements, everything. I still think those things don't, but nah, that's cool, because he's doing the same thing the boondocks used to do when the boondocks used to come when the boom, oh, when the boondocks copy pace Naruto. Boondocks is also studio bird. That is funny. That's that is fun. I wonder if they, wait, studio mer animated all of boondocks. Yes. Wow, so okay, including the later seasons. Yes, yes, studio mer is
So they are known for pulling things from either videos or anime and saying, "You know what? Let's just put a skin on this." That is a director's choice. That is a director's choice. And it's fine. It's fine. Only you don't notice that. It's fine, but call him out on it. I don't people praise that boondocks scene where they're fighting all the old people and people are like, "Oh my god, this is so awesome." They copied when Sasuke Fadi tochi or Ruchi Maru in the forest of death. And people love that scene, but people shit on Adi when he copy and paste this gun twirling scene. I don't know. Is it a studio murder in Japanese studio also? Korean. Korean? Yeah. Yeah. They are in their bag. Adi is fine because if he's doing that, I'm okay with it. I also like the fact and I 100% think this. Adi was someone who grew up with them, YouTube, AMVs, because the musical choices for some of these fight scenes are so good. They're all these fight sequences. They're so freaking good. Who had the best needle trap for a fight sequence? I only only one comes to mine as far as a fight sequence with music to it. I only got one that tops my list and it was bodies. The bodies. It's the floor. Oh, that was in the song. Yes, yes. Was it a WWE song also back in the day? I don't doubt it. I didn't watch WWE. Never mind. You didn't have a childhood. Yeah. So it was like the track list was CU and hell. Papa Roach. Oh, that one was good because of what that came up between them a lot of times. Yes. And that was when they were fighting. Bazooka, Casey Edwards and Amira Elfaki getting away with murder. Like I think it was a power glove remix Papa Roach again. And also like the remix like a remix of meet me in the afterlife. After life, I freaking love that song. Oh, after life was good. Okay. The first season though. Oh, and they brought it back though. They brought it back. But it's like a remix. But like from the first season. It's amazing. It's the girl she sings high pitch. She's like. That's that's Evan Essence. After life is Evan Essence. Oh, that's the song. Is that the original song for the show? Okay. Yeah. Yeah. From the first season like where you see the like the white rabbits backstory. That's the song that comes on. Yes. Okay. And that's that's Amy Lee from Evan. That's Evan Essence. Ah. Yes. Do you feel like the musical soundtrack popped off more in season two compared to season one? Yes. I notice it more. And see. I didn't. If you noticed it, I want to know what you guys think. Do you think it's worth the sacrifice of not having a a bomb ass intro like season one had? Yeah. We need the intro. We need the intro. Do you remember it? What do you do? Do you all remember the intro? Let biscuit. Let biscuit. Yeah. Stand up. Stand up. No. What you're going to do now. Season one has skimmed the answer. You skipped the season one intro. Tell me this. No, wait. You know what the season one intro is. No. No, no, no. I skipped this season intro because I was on the time. No, no, no, season two. 'Cause Dr. Chase texts me yesterday. Oh, you're going to be on them. I'm like, I've been watching the episode. But season one, like you, you remember the intro, right? Yes. I remember the intro. Because I don't, I don't know the one for season two. I'm really skipped. There is none. There really is no intro. I mean, there's, there's an intro. There's an intro. I mean, there's an animated intro, but it's not like. It's not an opening. It's not opening, right? I didn't miss anything. Yeah, no, that's what we're saying. You're not missing out on anything. That's, that's my problem. Oh, it seems to good. Yeah. So do you want, are you okay with them sacrificing a bomb ass intro to have a bomb ass soundtrack throughout the season? Yes. Obviously, like, how many times can you listen to the same intro multiple times? That intro is great. No, no. That's false. If you like the intro, look it up on YouTube. Look it up on YouTube and download it onto your computer. And listen to it on your own free time. There are some episode music are better. There is something about when your episode starts. And then it is, like, it leaves on a time. And you see the skip intro and you've clessed. I never skipped that. I always have that shit play. Season one, you don't skip season two. I'm okay if you skip it, but season one. Little biscuit. What do you mean by we? Nintendo Wii? Did I quote? Did I quote? Did I quote? I don't know if I quoted. The point is we don't skip. I said, yes, we do skip. Not for season one. You should not have. But season two, I won't judge you because season two, I felt, was lacking. There's, there's only several areas where I think season two was lacking. And I'll start up. Well, we already been talking about the intros. And I'll go ahead and say it right here. I miss the white rabbit. The white rabbit was cool. He was a cool villain. Yeah. Aris is weakest. I don't like Aris. How dare you? How dare you come on the scene and look like a villain and then end up being the villain. Boring. Boring. Okay, you know what? That's fair. Like it's one of those things where if you're reading, I guess, the comedy manga. And obviously this guy's the main character and this is the villain. And, you know, surprise, surprise, those are the villains. It makes you wonder like all the, all the cocktail parties he went to looking like the way he looked. Aris. And then people are like shaking his hand like, yeah, there's nothing wrong with this guy. And he looks evil. His eyes. His eyes. His skin is gray. His skin is literally gray. It's not even white. He might have a skin condition. I think at this point, you know, you can't judge people for their medical condition. I agree. I agree with Grandmaster. Like the white rabbit has like an overarching villain. It's, it's better. It's like I love the white rabbit. Yeah. He's completely evil. I can evil. Well, he also has a lawyer. The white rabbit has layers. Yeah. Like he would like, you know, he was a villain that was created. Not even. It's like he wasn't like purely evil. It's like he was created and then ended up being kind of like psychotic and all that kind of stuff. But, you know, again, that episode of the white rabbit and his backstory. That episode was a 10 out of 10 in the first season. Oh my gosh. Yeah. I might go back and rewatch that one. That one was really good. Yeah. Actually, do we know if suit or murder like the way they're doing every season? Are they the one writing the episode or do they have the source material shipped off from somebody else? So Adi, Adi and Alex Larson. I think are the headwriters and then Kelly McDonald Shakira Presley are also listed as the writers. But with that said, and I said this last year when we did season one, because the way it ended, obviously Virgil came on the scene. And then season two was announced for next year. I said, I said, I'm pretty sure they did both of these seasons in one batch. Yeah. And Netflix ordered them, they ordered a total of 16 episodes and then they split it up into two seasons. That's why we were able to get them so quick. But I feel like this season, like the second half at least the animation, everything is so much better. Why would they not do that with the first season? You see who starts off that badly and then this like it's obvious that this season animation is way better. Like there is obviously that's what I asked about if there was I guess a different writer anything because I feel like this season is written better. The animation is better even the music in between like the episode and the episodes are better fit better. It felt like this was produced by two different group of people written. I think they probably just listened to what people had issues with with season one and they didn't like just rewrite season two to fit those needs, but like they amended certain things. So like they did better music choices. And I mean, you think they went back and edited everything like edited some portion out. I mean, I don't think they edited a portion out. They just kind of adapted like like they knew what they were going to do, but then I don't mean edited out. I mean, like do you think they went back since grandmaster initially said he believed it was done like or you said you said it was all done at once as one.
block. Do you believe that for daready had season two ready and they're like, oh snap, let's go back and you know change a couple music. Let's clean up the animation. Do you think they did that? Oh, no, no. I don't think they did that. I don't think I don't know Grandmaster thinks that. I think what they did was they didn't just have it all ready like everything done and then they just cut it in half and then released one early. I think they had season one ready and they've had like just random numbers. 60 to 70% done of season two that they're already working on when season one comes out. And then by the time they they're hearing the reception of season one, they're like, okay, okay, okay, let's let's like go back and make some minor changes. They send the writers and animators back to the sweatshop. Yes. I think with regards to how this story is flowing season one is like set up season because you know the white rabbits are not here, but he's named dropped and his actions are mentioned throughout this season, you know. He gave Virgil gave him his blood. He's got direct ties to Mary's storyline and whatnot. And then there's you know, inklings of you know his motivations like they play straight into Mary's conflict this season as far as what are we doing just running around shooting up these demons? Like there are people out here just trying to survive and we're calling them demon hell spawns. And so, um, I definitely think the order was. Oh, no, no, no Senator Baines. No, that's not what they are. I mean, Senator Ben, that spawn from hell. Okay, Senator Baines. Quack's like a dog. It's a duck. I miss Kevin Connolly. This was God's plan. I miss Kevin Conroy. I do miss Kevin Connolly. Uh, his his absence was noticed. I have no idea what that is. I'm going to be. He doesn't know anyone. He doesn't know. He's just like, wow, pretty colors. No, no, no, no, no, no. Y'all know that every time we do this, you're supposed to be the encyclopedia. I don't pay attention to writers and directors. Kevin Connolly is the one name you should know. You talk a lot of cannons. You talk about him all the time with me every time you mentioned. Kevin, every time you mentioned, there's a conwakes. I'll Carolina. Every time you mentioned the Arkham series, you should think Kevin Conroy. Wasn't he the worst of Batman? Yes. Yes. I think I was Kevin Bacon. Never mind. Well, there you go. Roll credits. That was a joke. Oh, it wasn't. No, it wasn't. No, it wasn't. It was not. Uh, but yeah, I think seasonal one ultimately is a lot more set up. And then I think their big plans were to get Virgil into the fray and then really start moving the story because from here on out, you know, Virgil, uh, we, uh, Makai will invade Earth with me as its king. I thought that was cool. I don't know. I don't know what to think because I'm a weird Virgil. What about your mother? My mother was weak. What were the signs of? No, that was, that was a cool. Oh, some people were pissed with that too. You're kidding. What? Yes, because don't always, don't always says, we are the sons of Sparta to Virgil all the time in the games in the games. Okay. The context of this story with his, their ties to their mother and how much they love their mother. It makes sense. Why he says the sons of me mean, but they also love their mom in the game. It was universal that they were sad about what happened to the mom. So I think it when it came to like their lineage and what is causing them to clash in the, in the, in the context of the games, Dante always acknowledges themselves and so does Virgil. The sons of Sparta. That's what they always say. But I, I, I understand that and that's fine in the context of the games. Here, though, they, they established that there is a clear motherly son connection with both Virgil and Ava and Dante and Ava. And when it finally culminates in that fight against Argus X, I like like an, an, an episode seven. I like that that Dante said were the sons of Ava. It makes sense. Embracing his humanity. I don't know. That's, he's embracing his humanity. Yeah. And like they still like, and they still keep kind of like a core personality trait or just like ideology of Virgil that it's kind of like power is what is kind of like the most, what's the most important? Because Virgil, the like he is like the death of his mom. He blames it to a certain degree is like I wasn't strong enough. So it's like in order for you to avoid pain, you have to have power. And might it, and might is right. That's like, that's Virgil's mentality. And it's like his own way of like having the guilt from the past and justifying his current actions. It's like poetry at rhymes. I don't understand how people can hear that. I think it's left over animosity from season one. Like like people already hated season one. And they're coming into season two, wanting to hate it even like, oh my god, look, they even did. They even changed this Dante says sons of Ava. And now Ebony and Ivory, they hate it Ebony and Ivory because now he has to reload the pistols to put bullets in them. When in the games, it's unlimited because it's like demon bullets or whatever. I'm like listen, I okay. There was never a part in the show where like Dante's like, I'm out of ammo. I can't shoot Ebony and Ivory anymore. It's just for show, man. I mean, I don't know. I don't know. I'm just having fun with the show. I'm having fun. And maybe it's because, you know, I'm not so well versed in the games. Uh, I thought it was fine when he, when the designer gave him Ebony and Ivory. I thought that was fine. I thought the sons. I thought the sons of Ava was a nice cool kind of, let's flip this on them. You know, we don't know Sparta. We actually don't know him. We only know what's ever been told of us, but we do know our mother that we can share. We are the sons of Ava. Do not diminish her name. Uh, I like what the series has given us so far. I am not mad about anything. Uh, you know, I know people last season were mad saying, you know, oh, it's, uh, it's another dimension versus actual hell and, you know, heaven on earth. And I'm like, I think that's cool that you have some characters that believe it's hell. And I like how there's this idea that maybe it is another dimension. I think that makes for a better story. You know, it does because it shows like, I mean, this imagined it had happened in real life. If something like that works, it happened. Even if it was proven to be another dimension, a large group of people would still believe that it is hell because they represent what is hell. Exactly. Exactly. They're just giving us the POV of some average people, not the main character like in the game. Obviously, the main character knows another dimension people, but the average human walking around, if you see a Wayne monster with bats and, you know, like weird flying powers and stuff like that, you're going to think it's a demon. They have bat wings. They have fangs. The size of your head. They got scorpion tails. Oh my god. They have horns. You have a dude that looks like a freaking clown of all things. A demonic clown. Yeah. A demonic clown, which I feel like I need a joke. Listen, listen, I feel like an 80. Arkham. Wow. Oh my god. His name's Arkham. Oh my god. Oh, no, this is why you liked it. Wait. No, hold up. Wait. Um, first things first. I thought that when they jump when they show the jester and then they showed like Mary's flashback, not before the big reveal. I was like, oh, they kind of have the same nose. Mary's dad. They have heterochromia. Okay. Wait. Okay. Wait. Wait. Wait. Give me a moment. Wait a minute. It's not the same person. So then I rewatched it ahead of this podcast and I looked at their eyes and I was like, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Here we was like, oh my god. It was right there the whole time. I felt really stupid. Yeah. Even though like I think in the first episode, they really told you that we should tell her about her lineage. And then I think the next thing is, yes, Virgil and the jester. Yeah. Um, so I do need to ask, um, because I don't know how big Mary is in the game. But I think I did see a, uh, a, like a, a splice rule of like the first three games. The jester is from the game, right? Jester is from devil make
And he's Mary's father in that too. Mary's father, yes, Mary is from Devil May Cry 3. Oh, okay. And the whole story with her and Arkham and everything is, is from Devil May Cry 3. So, uh, funny enough, they pull a lot from a lot of the games here. They're pulling from DMC 1, 2, 3. Um, actually really mainly those. DMC 1 with like Mondis, DMC 2 with Aureus and Argus Axe. Oh, oh, he's from number two. He's from number two, which I mean, I, I know you mentioned you did not like Aureus, uh, which is fine. I, I get it, but he's just not as compelling as the rabbit. Understandable. Um, I like that they use them as the main villain here because he comes. He comes on a game that many consider to be the black sheep of the franchise. I don't care what, uh, revisionist historian says to me about the Devil May Cry 2 is a misunderstood masterpiece. Now, no, Devil May Cry 2 is terrible. It is terrible. And it is asked. And it will always be about to get killed in the comments. No, but the comments are going to agree with me. What? But, but you always know there's this one person in there that's like, no, I think it was misunderstood because I think the gunplay was actually very, uh, compelling back then. I love just mashing the shoot button to kill everything in the game and not using any of my blades. I love that part about the game. No, no, I will not accept any contrary and opinions on it. Um, but yes, he's from Argus Axe and Aureus are from those games. And, you know, the story wasn't that good in that game, the gameplay wasn't that good. So I like that they took those characters and they're like, you know what, there's potential here. Uh, it was a missed opportunity. Let's do something with them in the context of the show. Uh, so I, I liked, I liked that they took them and did something with them that he was not as compelling as the white rabbit. But the fact that they were here and I think they even added more backstory to Aureus. Like, is that the, yeah, is that the same his kind of multiple lifetimes and he killed his drunk father. I was being him. Okay, maybe that's all added. I, I think that's new. I think that's new. But, but him wanting to resurrect Argus Axe, like that is from the games. But everything with the abusive dad and, and growing up. And that's what I, I guess that's what made him evil. Well, uh, Argus Axe found him in his, you know, his very low moment in life. Right. Right. Uh, fueled that need for a might is right. You know, if you had power, maybe you would not have, uh, you know, uh, been. Been subjected to that. So again, the Virgil mentality, uh, which don't get me wrong. Uh, like, he's a good villain. Um, like, I enjoyed watching him. I just find it narratively boring that like you. I mean, when Dante first met him, he's like, hey, aren't you the guy who's got all those secret cloning experiments and like, uh, bio. Uh, like arm mechanic stuff. And he's like, ah, just rumors. Dante don't believe in all that stuff. And then he's got the clone army of his daughter. And he gets a biodynamic cybernetic arm. And I was like, Dante called it. Dante called it. He did. He was on to some. Should have just listened to him. Who voices Arias. Arias is voiced by our favorite Graham McTavish, who also is your boy from the original Castlevania. Uh, Teppish Dracula. Oh, Dracula. Oh, yeah. Yeah, his, his voice was very familiar. Yeah, I think I think I think Sean Karl likes him, you know. Keep using him. I don't blame him. Yeah, no, no, he's good. The voice acting is superb in this shot. I don't think. Oh, oh, you know, who does, um, Virgil, right? Ah, no, I don't. Oh, oh, okay. His name's Rob Robbie Damon. Appreciate it. Robbie Damon. He's um, Fushiguro. Oh, I don't listen to the English dub of JJK. I know. You watch English dubs. Oh, my gosh. What's wrong? JJK. English dub is good. Don't start. Don't start. Full stop. Full stop. I mean, I rather watch the original content to experience how it was meant to be. You know, that's how you explain art. That was meant to be. You know what? This is terrible. Well, y'all should put some respect on Robbie Damon. He is very good. He's done a lot. He has done a lot. He sure has. JJK for sure being the most like big, recent thing of late. But um, no, he's good. He's definitely worth knowing. Oh, he was, um, he's, wow, he's been in a lot of different animals. Yeah, he was. He's been in anything good. He was old and he's been in. He's been in. Re zero. Attack on Titan. Attack on Titan. He's been in. A lot of the fate series. I know what you're doing. He's got a lot of big credits. He's got a lot of good credits. He's worth knowing. Oh, he's one piece. He's Kizuki, uh, Kozuki Odin in the crunchy girl dub. Oh, jeez. Yeah. I really have to listen to anime dubs to really know. Oh, this is annoying. I thought this is going to be a big thing. Wow. Wow. Some titles. Whatever. Fine. Did we all recognize, uh, Luke in, uh, the Morgan Freeman in the garden house mansion. Yeah. I did not care for his character. But that is Keith David. Who did? Oh, David. David. Goliath from Gargoyles. Can you give him something like actually like that he could do? Gargoyles. What cartoon is that? Like that? Everyone remembers that. No, no. I know you know about it. But like, you see how it didn't click to you. That was his most prominent voice actor. Okay. Okay. Okay. I know he's stuff. The president. The president from Rick and Morty. Yes. You could have said that. You could have just said that. But let me, let me choose the most of the Marvel. Not, not, not, not many people may know or may have seen. Like, it's like, isn't that guy? Isn't the president also getting his own show at Rick and Morty? I have no idea. I think I did read something about it. It's, it's the equivalent of telling someone. Did you know Jim Carey voiced this character? And you're talking to someone that, that doesn't know who Jim Carey is. And then Grandmaster's choice to give you an example is, Oh, you know, the movie 13. And you're like, the movie 13. What? What? Right. Right. No one knows. No one knows that garbage ass horror movie. That Jim Carey wasn't in. You need to stop. Gargoyles is what put Keith David on in the voice acting role. So don't even try it. Okay. To be fair, I recognize his voice. He does have a deep voice. Yes. Okay. Yeah. That's a good one too. I haven't watched has been. I forgot his name of the character, but he's like the cat. I've seen one episode. He's speaking of cats. He's the cat. Basically. I need to watch the small one. Yeah. Yeah. I was trying to take. I was like, yeah. Yeah. He's also the cat in a. Yeah. Coraline. Oh, damn. Well, he's Dr. Faciliate. Prince is in the frog. Are you ready? That guy. Either way. He's the president and Rick and Morty, you know, for the average people out there. I think it's fine. It's fine. You don't know Jim Carey from 13. It's fine. It's my favorite role. So I'll put him on the map. Mr. Proper's Penguins. Come on. You want to see that movie? He's character gave us our one of our best moments with Dante and Lady hanging out with little Maddie Matilda. Oh, I was going to say. That was cute. Yeah. Yeah, I was because I was going to say it's like one of their best moments. Wait, you mean like when they literally were just like screwing around for five hours while the guy was trying to break the freaking arcana? Yes. Yes. And the game was a later boy. He's talking about when they clapped. They clapped cheeks. That's what he's talking about. I was not referring to that. You didn't even think they did it. And I was like, they for sure. I don't think they did it. They did it. They did not. And the reason why the reason why is because after that second kiss in the room. When they cut back to Dante, he's putting his cloak on without any, you know, clothes. Right. But you do not see Lady put on her clothes back. Because he didn't want to sexualize her. What do you mean? Well, showing that she's putting her clothes back on. They said we could do it for Dante. We don't need to do it for her. No, I don't think they did. Yeah. I mean, I agree. I think they did it. Dante got it in.
you want him to get it in. That's you're like, come on, come on, man, come on, get it, boy, get it. That's what lady wanted. Oh, she wanted it. They both wanted it. They both wanted it. Are you talking for women? I am not. What a misunderstanding. I'm just saying, I like their relationship. Is this relationship in the game or is this exclusive to the series series? It's exclusive to the series. Like there's like tongue. It's like cat and mouse type of stuff in the game. Like witty banter. Yeah. Like, oh, will he? Will she never know? And Dante never like commits. Like he has, he has lady and he has Trish. Those are her. Trish is awkward though. Trish is in the first game, right? She's in the first game without spoilers because some people don't know why Trish is a little awkward. But those are the two ladies that are like side by side with Dante and you're like, oh, which one? Which one does he want? But never like why not? Right. Right. Why not? You know, why commit to one when you can have both. So, so when the lady and Dante thing happened, did the like game fans? Oh, they were past. They were. They were. They were. They were. They were living. Anything that deviated from the games in any way, it was an immediate reaction of like, this is a bad choice. This is terrible, which is rather funny because I feel like it's, it's a little, it's a little bit of hypocrisy where you have the sonic live action films that do not copy the games one for one. They just take elements of the games and they tell me and they put it together in a way that makes sense and it's a literal adaptation. Yes. Tell me, was it in Sonic Adventure 2 where Sonic had a father figure that he looked up to and he acted like a child with? You're right. I forgot that terrible choice, terrible choice. They, the spirit of Sonic the Hedgehog is felt in those live action films. Whether or not they change certain things to fit the narrative, the spirit is there. Same thing here. I, so what? Lady and Dante kiss. And the context of this show it made sense. There was a lot of tension since season one. They, you knew she was like, oh, you're, you don't want to let me stop. Let me stop. Let me stop. That tension from season one, I'm like, no, no, no, no, I, I know what you're doing. I, I buy with it. I like it. And also, I like the fact that they're just both kind of awkward. Like when Dante went in for that third kiss, like right before the fight with Argus X. All the final fight. Yes, he didn't realize Mary was like not in the moment with them. And he's like, oh, right. Another right time. I like that. He's stupid. He's stupid. Yes, that was funny. That I like them together. I also like, you know, kind of Mary's resolve at the very end where she's like, Dante, you're the best of humanity. I'm the worst of it. And she can't like absolve herself of, you know, and it's also like you can like, not run away from your problems, but like shove them in like somewhere else. I have to face it head on. So it's like, I'm not going to be able to live with myself until I face this head on. And she says she's, she's got to go kill the source. She's, she's going to kill her dad, which I mean, it goes. So this kind of leads into devil may cry three a little bit because don't make cry. Three is centered around this. Like gesture and Virgil, they're working together to what was it, Dr. Mondo, like open of a portal to hell. I think, yeah, I think it's like a tower or something. A tower, right. The tower that will open. I think the demon world realm. Yeah. Yeah. I think that that would open it back up to, like to the, like to our world. Okay. Something like that. Yeah. Virgil's evil plan is he has to work with gesture to accomplish his evil plan in DMC three. So a lot of a lot of this setup looks like it's going to lead into more DMC three stuff. And that's more Dante versus Virgil. Yeah. Instance. But how sad it is. I'm not, no, but that's literally almost like it's the entire devil may cry series. I need Virgil to come back. I do not understand. One, I thought it was a really good reveal with regards to Mundus. Um, you know, Mundus being the one that sent the goons to kill evil. But you were surprised by that. I mean, not as okay. So I think they wrote this kind of well because like I said, Aryus is clearly a villain, right. But he definitely has plenty to gain to tell Virgil. Hey, Mundus actually killed your mother, not me, you know, it's very easy for him to say that. And that'd be like, well, he's lying. He's just trying to get Virgil off his back. You know, um, so that I think they played that well because it's a slide of hand. He was telling the truth. Uh, Mundus is a piece of shit. Um, you know, and oh, my God, the torture they put young Virgil. Oh, God, the scene where he's getting lit on fire, like, he was weak. Oh, my God. I feel like that was a family guy skit or something. Like when Stewie lights Brian. Yes. Oh, my God. Yes. With the blame thrower. Yeah. Well, then because he borrowed the money from him. Yes. Yes. That's what that's. It was just constant. They were just burning his skin off. They said, wait till he heals. Burn him again. And meanwhile, I'm over here like, what kind of life is Dante living right now? Eating pizza, you know, Enzo, taking him to hooker lounges. I was like, poor Virgil. One of me, I'm like, I guess I get it. I guess why I get why he's so vengeful and hurt all the time because Jesus, look what they put him through. Uh, he got taken away. Not well, his whole life is a lie. You know, Mondis kills his mother. His brother runs away. And then he's left to torture. And then the dude who rescues him, he's like, Hey, I rescued you. I didn't put you in these change. That was that dude over there. Meanwhile, he turns and goes, obviously evil guy does evil stuff. So I do think they played that really well. But I'm also over here like, so okay, he's gonna kill Mondis. And then he still wants revenge on the earth. Why? Why? Because the earth is weak. And if earth was not weak, his mom would have not died. He wants to purge himself all weakness. Like as Virgil. And for him, like him being part human is weak. So it's like, it's like, he, he absolutely hates that he is human, like part human. Like to a certain degree, Dante, I think it's like, he does not like that he's like part demon. But I think Dante does like a slightly better job at like accepting, okay, I'm like, you know, I'm half and half, then Virgil. Like Virgil is like very attuned to his demonic side. And his human side is a is a constant reminder of his weakness that he couldn't prevent his mom's death. Yeah, gosh. It's the same trauma, but two different answers that they came to. Yeah. And that's like, and that is to a certain degree, like the entire thing of Virgil like in the Devil May Cry, like franchise. Like, it's only there was a therapist. And literally, talk out these traumas. It's like the last Devil May Cry game, five actually splits that, splits both the human and the demon part. They quite literally do that. I need to play DMC five again. I honestly don't remember. Yeah, I don't. They talk about the Virgil court. Yeah, it's like V and Urizin. Yeah, I don't think he played at DLC. I think he won't be playing the base game. No, that is the base game. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's the base game. We're getting lost. Grandmasters here, like, I mean, I know, I know only he didn't take a year to do 80 percent of one game. I know a little bit about DMC five. I forgot how I, I know Virgil has a, you're most likely, you're most likely said, I am not going to play this. They're going to forget I was playing this game. Let me go on YouTube and look up the cut scene. I was making a video back when we were making season one videos and I did pull some cut scenes from Devon.
may cry five. I don't remember his son's name. I know he's a playable character. Oh, and I knew this too because Johnny Young Bosch played him, right? Johnny Johnny. I don't know what you're talking about. Johnny Young Bosch. I don't know who Johnny did. They don't know who Johnny Young Bosch is. Who's that? Who's that? Yeah, whatever, whatever. I like where it's heading. I really did feel something when, you know, the last words Virgil said to Dante were, "Do you think if our places were traded, would our lives be the same?" I just like it. Is this Naruto and Sasuke again? No, it's not about Naruto and Sasuke. They literally say that when they fight at the Kage summit, when Naruto and Sasuke fight, Sasuke will be different if our roles were reversed. That's all he saw. That's all you saw. Wow, this is so good. I didn't attribute to Naruto and Sasuke, but I thought it was good. I thought it was good. It was corny, obviously. That's fine. It's like, Adi Shankar is trying to live out his 2000s action romcom. He's done a lot of generic stuff in here. It's okay. Generic Slop. You can tell he's eating it up on you. I am eating it up because we grew up in the 2000s. It's okay. So you cried when Virgil sent Dante flying and then the Dante looked back at him and an image of baby Virgil appeared and he's still smiling. Did you cry? I didn't cry, but I definitely let me stop. He was not paying attention. He's just like the episode playing in the background. Listen, listen. I definitely felt those emotions. I thought they did a really good job with their dynamic. So if you played a game, you would have seen that day. No, if I played a game, I would have been mad at every fucking thing in this show. No, we played all the game. I waited. I would have been like the other people. I wouldn't have been stupid. You wouldn't have been stupid then. That's what you would have been. I would have been the Virgil of this extreme reactions to the show. Y'all are acting like Dante's. That's funny because y'all are weak. But yeah, I'm trying to think of we missed anything. Clone Bird Lady was whatever. She was annoying. I'm glad she finally got shot by the little girl. I don't know if she was supposed to be like a play off of that other red-headed lady from Devil May Cry 2. Do you guys know Toasty, Dr. Mondo, Lucia? Lucia? It's been like a long ass time. Okay. Okay. I don't remember. We can look it up again to see if she looked memorable. Oh, I see what you're talking about. Yes, you're right. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, it's Lucia. Yeah, you're right. It's exactly that. I don't remember exactly what her mythos was, honestly. And I don't know if she's supposed to be in this series at all. Yeah, no, she is. She's not. No, apparently, she was in season one. It appeared in season one. Lucia appeared in season one. According to the week, first, Lucia make a smoke. Primero and season one as one of the team and hunt to track the captain. Oh, she did appear in season one. It was like at the end, at the end of season one, where, um, yeah, no, no, no, no, I don't remember her. She was just in the background. It was a blink and you miss it because from what I remember, she didn't say anything. Yeah, I think you might be right. Yeah, yeah, here she is. Yeah. She appears in season. Oh, wait, wait, wait, Lucia and she appear as separate characters and Netflix version, the first of she makes a small camp. Okay. Yeah, only season one. Only season one. Okay. Yeah. Well, I guess, um, yeah, she doesn't appear. Oh, what's up with the dude Tom for dark comb, the football player. I don't know what they were trying to do with this. Okay. I think he was supposed to be just a dumb, committed character, just like, um, with some sort of the Mortal Kombat. No, you're throwing the Mortal Kombat game to have the main character. The guy was the actor. Johnny, Johnny, who doesn't look like Johnny H, I feel like he's supposed to be that derivative of Johnny H, like, where he's supposed to be obviously out of place, but he's just there. He's just somehow surviving like a cockroach. Yeah, looting that. No, I mean, and it's like the only one from dark comb that has like some, some semblance of a conscience or that he is in like, yeah, fully brainwashed. Right, right. No, I can see it. I mean, I, I, Audi had definitely played a lot of these games that we played growing up. Um, I imagine he played Metal Gear Solid as well. And there's a character named Johnny in the Metal Gear Solid franchise. And he's like a bumbling character throughout the games that he is somehow surviving. And like, like, he, he is a background character with like no agency or whatever. And then he becomes someone that like kind of saves the day at the end of the Metal Gear Solid series. Um, but he's like a bumbling idiot. He's just like, you know, stumbling and barely surviving through, through the games. Um, I, I thought Johnny here, or right, his name was Johnny, Tom, Tom, Tom, I thought Tom here in the series was supposed to be a play on that because he was just, he was just bumbling through. He shot the president by accident. Yeah. Or the, the president might have needed to go. Uh, you know, he, he sold out, he sold out, uh, them to freaking Mondis. Yeah, I have to do what you need to do to surrender. He has to secure it. Yeah, he had a negotiation with terrorists. That's what we do. Sometimes you do. He had to secure his second term in office. Yeah, he secured it. All right. All from his grave. There was, there were some factors that he did not predict what happened. No, definitely not. Um, um, and shoot, I guess I'm trying to think as far as anything else worth mentioning from season two. I think we covered all the big stuff. Yeah. Yeah. I think we did. Yeah. I mean, did you like the, um, like seeing some of the flashbacks with Mondis, Arcasax and Sparta, like the demon backstory, which you don't see a lot of this in the games either. That's another point of contention. People get pissed about. It's essentially not shown. It's intentionally not shown in the games because you're, you as the player need to imagine those scenarios. And you know, the game tell you what you see. That is so dumb. That is just to be adding extra detail. You should be happy about this. It's like reading a comic and they release an extra comic on the side just to tell you what more happened. Like, for example, like, yeah, like on, like, on, on all that stuff. It's just like, yeah, exactly. It's expansion. Like, for example, like, again, out of context, like attack and titans, all of the giant titans, because they're rumbling at the end, apparently the author released a comic leader on to say that after Aaron died, they reverted it back to human and they got slaughtered by the survivor as revenge. It's little extra details. I like those. You see, because it was something that we released like a couple of years ago. And the only reason I know that is because something I recommended to me on YouTube and I went down the rabbit hole and I was like, oh, he released a short explaining that all of the rumbling titans got slaughtered later on because people, the survivors are like, you killed us. So we're gonna kill you now. So it shows the cycle continue. That's extra detail. Same thing with this. People can complain all they want. I don't care. And again, it's like, this is like why, like, I'm very liberal when it comes to adaptations because I think it's like, as long as the essence of whatever it is that you're adapting remains and that I know for a fact that this was like, in this case, this is Devil May Cry. This is Devil May Cry. The essence of Devil May Cry is there. Like, as long as that remains and that obviously you put some like very important, there's some very important things you cannot change. Like, you can't change that Dante and Virgil are brothers. Like, that's what I'm gonna tell you. It's okay to add stuff, but not remove. Like, there's like, there's certain things that it's like, you can't change. But there's a lot of things you can change. There's a lot of things that you can take liberty. And like, not everything needs to go in the order that the games went. You can incorporate everything that you incorporate in all the games, just in a different order. It's like, and in a way that makes more cinematic sense from like a TV perspective. Because what makes sense in a game perspective doesn't always translate to TV. And I think it's like, I think they did well in this series doing that. I think actually to your point, Dr. Mondo, I see what you're saying, because what they did here in Devil May Cry and based on all that you all have said, obviously they crafted and created a world that pays homage to some of the original stories.
but they tell a story that makes sense and is cohesive enough and is executed in a way that, you know, is still quality. And it makes me think about actually Dr. Chase mentioned it earlier, the Netflix last airbender series Avatar, because that is a show where they tried to somewhat do a double. I actually know, I almost wish they did a double made cry route because what they chose to add and remove in their final product. It makes sense. It makes no sense. It's annoyingly bad and it's execution as well. So I almost wish they kind of just said the double made cry route kept a lot of the essence the same, which is not hard to do. But give us a cohesive story that still makes sense. Again, it's like you don't need to make a carbon copy. You can make it original. You can put your flavor into it. Keep the essence overall. But you know, expand on it because it's like, if I want a copy of certain thing, I'll just play the game again. It's like, what the hell? Or just watch the cutscenes or watch the cutscenes. It's like, give me something that makes sense. It's like, amazing. Ah, this is an expansion of the game. And like where the game doesn't go into death. Oh, you can go, you can go into that. An example, prime example of this last of a series season one, like the bill, the bill, the bill, the like a third episode. Yep, that episode. That episode is pretty much a pure original episode where they expanded on something that the game does not expand at all. It was the couple. Yeah, the couple. Remember the gay guy from the last of us. Parks and Rick from Parks and Rick. Yeah, I forgot about these guys. Yeah. And it's like that is possibly one of the best episodes of that entire season. Yeah, no, I would say go back to the. I wasn't saying that goes to the point where we say before it's OK to add exactly that you can add and expand the universe just don't change the universe. That's a difference. Exactly. So you have a tour change because I will tour stories linear by introducing characters before certain time happen. It messes up the timeline with later episodes or at least the way it was in the. Well, the series. I mean, we should. You guys liked the Mondays and Argus sacks and start a back story. Did you like it? Yes, yes. Yes, I like added detail. I like the, um, what is the word, um, lack of a better word or the ambiguity with sparta. I don't know what to believe right now. Oh, do you actually care for his family? Right. Did he, did he love his sons? Did he love Eva? Was it just like let me, you know, get my willy wet in the human world? Damn, able. And then, you know, go back. I like this ambiguity because I feel it will be further explored. I don't even know what sparta is dead. I don't know where he is. You know what's funny? Even in the games, you don't really know he's alive or dead or not. I think it's implied that he's dead. You just, you know, you never see it. It's left open in case of future games. Right. It's left purposefully ambiguous, but for the purpose of the show, you know, for it to be interesting. I feel like you do have to explore like, did he actually care for his kids? I liked the scene with Dante where he's like yelling at Virgil. And he's like, Virgil, how can you side with Mondis? Dad loved us. And then Virgil's like, mom said dad loved us. We never got to be with dad. Yeah. And I was like, um, daddy wasn't there. Daddy. Daddy. No goals. Daddy wasn't there. Maybe the mom had stuck on central. Right. Maybe I think for the purposes of a show, that is worth exploring. I actually look forward to season three. Well, they touch on many layers. Oh, 100%. I would love to see kind of Mondis made Eva for the first time. I would imagine maybe if Sparta's alive, he could come back into play. I was going to say we see Nero. You probably only liked it because he reminded you of. He doesn't know of full metal alchemist. All gone. Oh, wow. Wow. His dad left like a full metal alchemist. The owner. Wow. Yeah. Homeheim did lead. And then the mom died. Wow. I love this series. They remind me of so much. But actually, now that you mentioned it, young Dante and Virgil kind of look like Alfonso and Edward. Oh, there you go. Wait, I was once an editor for full metal. Oh, I didn't watch that show. Oh, my god. Okay. That's fine. For every bad, for every good game, I don't watch. There's a good show you haven't watched. I was watching severe shows like 10, 10. Yeah. It's just funny because everything that you say that you like, I feel like, I know it's referencing something. And that's why he likes it. Naruto and Sasuke. Kakashi and Obi-to. Listen, you can have a reference. It's about execution. Devil May Cry has not missed on its execution yet. So it has my investment. I am invested in this. I 100% want to season three. Will you finish the first game by season three? I could technically. I could go. I could go play it right after this. You know, you actually. And that's what happened. Well, that's what happened last time. It was us talking about it. And I was like, let me go play the game. So. I might just. I'm actually going to replay it too. I think I might just go start Devil May Cry 2 and read up on. Where I left off on Devil May Cry 2. Well, I forgot all the gameplay. So I'll have to replay it. No, I'm going to lose against the final boss. I got to say like Adi Shankar. Like he does good in this type of stuff. Yeah, people need to lay off Adi Shankar. No, he does great. Like Captain laser hawk. Captain laser hawk. That's right. Like he does a good job in this. You know what? I'm going to say because y'all mentioned it's like, oh, like, oh, it's Metal Gear Solid. Give us a Metal Gear Solid. Oh God. If he did a Metal Gear Solid anime. That'd be great. His, his Assassin's Creed show is coming out. He's doing Assassin's Creed. Wait. I know Netflix is animation. It is. I know there's an animated one. His name is on this. I'm on his page right here. Adi Shankar. What is his role? Is he like supporting role directly? Just executive producer this time around. Which, I mean, usually when he's attached. When he's attached like that. Because like, same thing with Captain laser hawk. I think he was. Oh, it's like it's the. Oh, wait. Oh, wait. Do we know what's the setting for the Assassin's Creed? I don't think so. No, he's no longer attached. Oh, he's not. Never mind. No longer attached. He probably saw the writing. He probably saw the writing and saw Ubisoft was wasting money. Again, it's it. I am out of here. No, it's fine. Okay. But yeah. You know what? Adi Shankar. Give us a Metal Gear Solid out of me. I'm not. I actually would like to see a Metal Gear Solid. Yeah. Metal Gear Solid. A series from him. Or Metal Gear Solid. Real quick. Is he does. Does he have a thing with Capcom? It seems like Castlevania. No, Castlevania's Konami. Which is also Metal Gear Solid. Okay. And then Captain laser hawk though had some Capcom. No, Captain laser hawk had Ubisoft. He's been getting a lot of the game company like doing some stuff like. Yes. Video. Like Far Cry. Rayman. Rainbow six. Totally. Or you know, he can do a resident evil. Well, they did mention raccoon city in season one. Yeah. Maybe that's on the table. Yeah. But then this time around when Dante and Lady were. You know, doing dress up. Didn't Dante put on a Charlie? Yeah, he did put on Charlie. Yeah. Yeah. Is raccoon city supposed to be in the same universe as the MC? Or in in the context of this show, it's mentioned raccoon city is mentioned. But not as far as I'm aware, like no, Devil May Cry is not in the same universe as resident evil. But Devil May Cry one did start off as a resident evil game before getting retooled into Devil May Cry. I remember he told me the one that like the game that Devil May Cry. The people think a lot of times is like in the same universe sometimes because it's very similar, but they're different companies. Bayonetta. Oh, that's right. Yeah. Like we already talked about. Inzo. Yeah. Right. Bayonetta. Like is the one that like a lot of people think it's in the same because it literally it can easily blend. But they're different companies. That's not a good
You should play Graham master now let's say now listen now listen out of Sean car wants to if I really want to piss some people off He could throw a bayonetta bayonetta in the next oh my god Oh, he could mash and then she can come in and say we have a friend in common. I'm looking for who killed in so Actually would be cool. I would watch the bayonetta on me the bayonetta is there is I think there's like a movie I know there's I think there's a bayonetta there is an anime there is an anime movie. Yeah, like the early 2010s late 2000 Little that doesn't say same like devil may cry devil may cry had an anime like in the late late 2000 Which was terrible. Oh, something's like it Don't miss a month, but actually before I forget did y'all like Luke and in Maddie? Did y'all like them? I like them. You like them? Okay? All right, oh sign with them for me. I was like Yeah, it was a scatter boy. She says the seed that scene was funny, but the characters themselves did you care? Okay, I will say Maddie felt random like I thought that was an Easter egg for fans like is she in the games at all No, she's an original character. I think she's retooled from the devil may cry anime I think there was another little girl in that anime that don't say like helped out a little bit I think her name was Maddie or some other variation of the word Maddie But yeah, the way the way she came on the scene. I was like is this for somebody? I feel like they're doing this for somebody right for for the most part. She is an original character but Luke and as far as I'm aware is an original character and I didn't care for him. I love Keith David, but I didn't care for Luke and see and that makes me think in you know The next season or later on we will have more flashbacks because he cannot just say you're just like your father, you know Wait, he can't just Huh? Wait, more flashbacks with Luke in or oh yeah, yeah flashbacks with Luke in and sparta because he named he says, you know You knew my dad. You should have told me a long time ago. That would have saved so much time Like that makes me think we will get more Sparta flashbacks and we'll probably say I think you're just gonna I just need to be flashback between blue kin and sparta, but you know, we're not gonna get detailed or No, no, I think like, you know, Luke and will be in the flashbacks. He's dead and he's not angel It's a it's about Sparta's human Travels on earth like we'll see Sparta meet Luke and we'll see Sparta meet Eva like I don't think they would just casually let us know That they know each other and then not give us anything other than that they knew each other. I just realized Sparta look his human form looks like home and time Which also I was like because I remember they showed a little bit of it, but they don't really emphasize his human appearance Which is also like a brief and yeah, there's like a brief glimpse of it Which I didn't know what to make of it, so Yeah Right, right No, I mean I like I mean with one little they did show I like seeing Um the flashbacks with the demons like Mondis and the the coup with Argus X like Mondis is an asshole himself, but he's like Argus X you gotta go you gotta go you're worse than me Uh, so I don't know I like that there's like tears of like villainy and even in the world of Makai or hell They're like y'all dog you're going too far with this Like wait, no, we're we're demon dog he's gonna dictator It's like him or hating us. I mean, I feel that I feel that's usually how it goes is One dictator thinks they can be better than the other one, right? Yes one one is one is the saturday much Yes, or are you know one dictator Starts losing their edge and their most loyal night is like hey Uh, get it together. I'm gonna Off you real quick, you know backstop him. Yeah So which is technically what's part of it did uh to uh Mondis To a degree Or so Mondis said yeah, he did that he did that because he's my most loyal night I'm like, I don't know about that someone's lying. I don't trust Mondis I like the enemy trust demons To me, they're not demons. They're just from Makai You're trying to humanize the Zeeman Grandmaster Yeah, thank you senator bane Um, but um unless y'all got anything else um Did we cover all the big stuff I think so yeah, no, we saw the devil triggers. We saw Yamato and I oh we saw the sparta sword turn into um Oh this the brown splitting Well, it's all look that a little bit last season, right? ability to Split the realm. I think so open the open the open the rift Wasn't I like at the end of the last episode? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, I'm excited. I'm excited to see where they take it. Yeah We will see where they take it um because they covered I mean, I don't know if Mondis will be like the next I mean, they're clearly building up for Mondis Unless Virgil kills him He's not gonna kill them. There's you know by if Virgil and Dante together could not kill a weakened There was absolutely Along the side by Mondis there is no way in hell That Virgil alone Is gonna beat Mondis No way in a Kai. You said no way in hell. No way in a Kai Semantics Um here. Okay, let me ask y'all this if you could Per next season if you could have one song be featured as the background to a fight scene Uh, and we'll love them to add the DMC five songs Oh, the devil trigger song the dev oh well they had it in this uh in this season already pull my devil trigger They can add it. Was that what he said we do things better with music I don't I really don't remember this scene that it was literally it played for like a total of like 10 seconds Um, but the song tells you talking about pull my devil trigger That they did technically play it but I I love that song so I'll let them play it again Because that's what makes the game so that at least even with the fifth game is the music Um, I want them to play uh in the end From damn you I was just about to say Lincoln Park as well. I was gonna say uh They can put Lincoln Park Any like any Hybrid Theory or Meteora Lincoln Park and we're gonna be good. I said if they could play lying lying from you by Lincoln Park um, which one is that? I'm lying to pen the truth the more I push You're pulling away because I'm lying my way from yeah They just play nickel back. I just got one some good nickel back to be good Nickel back breaking the habit Breaking the habit they put breaking the habit and I'm good Um the artist for that Lincoln Park If they did a can you take me higher Why why do you know the song because it sounds something silly like Dante's having like some Major like heavenly moment. I don't know Um What's the other one toasty you you said you wanted nickel back Look at this photograph Every time it makes me laugh Dante showing the locket to Virgil I'm telling you nickel back is beats your music People will learn to appreciate nickel back who will be in our 80s eating tapioca say y'all remember nickel back It's good. No, they put rock they put rock star from nickel back I'm through with standing line This might be a stretch, but maybe they could do some black eyepiece like where's the love Since he's 2000 They need to put like rock music it needs to be rock. I think I think for comedic purposes if they did something like where's the love like like in the dress Of scene where they're or or well, no, I'm thinking like maybe the Hellspawns are coming down and killing people and then you hear Justin Tipper like people killing people dying No, that's too much. I cannot I expect some good needle drops nonetheless We'll see we'll see uh don't know when season three is coming out likely next year we need a confirmation I don't know there's because like what right now the way they ended it
Season one ended on like a very intentional cliffhanger like oh, there's Virgil. We clearly have to have a season two But with season three Where it ended right now like is a good like like breaking point like they could take a break if they wanted to even though There's definitely still more to tell I disagree with that. This is such a complicated complex show if they take a break It's gonna go. It's gonna be a hard to go back into the show. No, no I mean like in terms of do they already have a season three ready for next year I I don't think they do Compared to where they were with seasons one and two because he's a lot better open up the sweatshots I would like for season three to come out. I don't know invincible take take a couple notes here. They're released in seasons every year That's a different. That's a different story. It's a completely different story. Yeah, no, no, no Same thing because American studios are mediocre. We can't it can't be a discussion before Invisible cannot be compared to this the the animation is It's a better and it also inventables budget half of it goes to their star power. So They keep you see this forward to have decent animation, but you see that's the difference between a studio that cares about the reputation And I got it. I just want to meet up with different stars The invisible studio It's just full of clouds Listen that was that the story of invincible is great. I will say that the writing is really good The lighting is really good, but it's hammered down by the constant vibes Like you know the aim this celebrity that keeps showing up, which is annoying. I rather have Johnny from down the street We can really read be a voice actor. We didn't see another Johnny young Bosch whatever else No, yeah, I was gonna say don't say Johnny from down the street Meanwhile Johnny Young Bosch is here killing it as Dante But you see no, but like that's the thing like I'm like this studio Remember like those are the kind of studio that everyone should be supporting obviously They release two season back to back year after year and instead of the quality going down to improve and they're doing like other projects at the same time Yeah, there's this one like they're doing the my adventures with Superman. They're doing this show they I don't know what they're cooking over there in Korea But they're already Quinn show. They did the Harley Quinn show We could be here. There's no there's no way they did the Harley Quinn. They did the Harley Quinn show Yeah, the Harley Quinn show a moving like this. I mean, it's a comedy, but that red The Harley Quinn show is apps. It's an absolute gem. There's no way. I've seen it now I'm all caught up on Harley Quinn. We've talked about this on the pond. Yeah, oh wow Yeah, studio mayor Harley Quinn That is crazy and those are animation services for 3 and 4 so I don't know that means they're doing everything but season 3 No, they might not be doing everything, but they're still giving some hand in all of those works and well only season three and four I mean, yeah, those are not the best seasons, but they were so enjoyed. Why enjoy it? Well, the Harley Quinn never has like an animation problem though, you know, right probably because they have good people right? He's working on it instead of hiring a bunch of heineless celebrity. They're eating up the function. They did Toasty's favorite seasons of young justice outsiders and phantoms No, they oh my gosh. Did they not do the original that? Yes, they didn't do the original. Okay, so funny enough But we can have a whole another pod talking about studio mayor Yeah, like the animation went down between seasons two and three of young justice like significantly. I don't know what happened, but Studio mayor. This is not a W young justice. It's not a W for them. I don't blame them. I blame maybe they came and clean up the mess. I was already there. They did their best Maybe the sample I feel like there's their B or C team could probably do a better job than most First team and American studios all I say is this they provided some work on the Avatar Ang movie Which was amazing. I'm gonna leave it at that. That's that's where they need to be put in more of their effort Avatar studio Nothing we all watched it right I have no I have a okay, I don't have I don't have it double-made cry the season 8.5 Bit maybe yeah 8.5 I think it's fair Last season I think I gave last season an eight So this see this season was just 0.5 better than season one Yeah, I still I still needed to I think we're on it. I think we're still in a hard-to-sauce game moments I think I think I think if you give me a white rap a white rabbit ask villain Who Virgil is not necessarily a villain, but he's the more complicated antagonist this time around? So I think I sub out are is for Some of more complex like the white rabbit. I think I'm sold but everything else again. We're on a upward Movement I can't wait to see whatever happens between Mary and the Jester as well That shall be interesting I give it a nine. I think it's like my my only like gripe With it is similar to Grandmasters. I didn't Love Aryas. I preferred the white rabbit and like that I think was like the only gripe I had with the season Yeah, because animation the animation is better than last season like the The fights are better than last season. I think the Virgil Dante dynamic is great Lady is great. I Will say the soundtrack is still amazing, but season one still has afterlife After life like that song I played it on repeat. I don't know how many times And also the like damn the opening theme the opening theme the opening theme of season one was like damn that was so good I never skipped it. We can't give it a nine till they fixed that opening No, but like I give it a nine because like the like what keeps it from a 10 is That like yeah, the opening theme song and like mostly kind of like the villain It's like that's pretty much what keeps it from a 10 for me because I Thoroughly enjoyed it No, that's fair. That's fair I'm in the same Yeah, it's it's a nine. It's a nine for me I didn't vibe with Luke and in Maddie. I felt like they were just like plot devices to I got a chant here for eight hours Dante wall. You go clap lady in the room. I have prepped for you It's I don't know some weird original characters, but I love Dante and Virgil They were great animation was great. I love the back stories showing more of like Mundis and Argus X I wish they had an intro. I wish I had a proper intro with music But what's that song pray pray like hell pray like hell the theme of the song. Oh, is that is that is that the theme? I didn't know you're gonna pray like hell. Oh, oh, that's played in the show. Okay, right, right. I love that song. That's on Yeah, that's good. Great. It's good. Yeah, it's a nine. I mean, this is good. This is good. They keep this dynamic moving forward They're they're in good hands. They're in good hands Because I'll give it a 9.1. I fully do this such a better job in the first season What are you IGN 2017 IGM? Like what are you? What are you? 9.01 slightly better than Anyway, I give it a 9.1 It's way better than the first season. I feel like the story was easier to follow I don't know about you guys the first season. It was good. Don't get me wrong. The villain was better At a hard time watching every episode back to back. I feel like it didn't flow properly, you know, like It was just a bunch of bumps and curves like the story did not flow well And this one I feel like the story was written better Which is why I asked you guys at the beginning and they were the one in charge of it because I want to know the date switch You know writers or what happened. People can improve. I mean, yeah, that's a good sign. Unlike a lot of American studios. They're improving So I'm happy with it and I guess in terms of intro. I don't care for the intro. I don't know what you guys do
And if the angel back and watch that one again, the intro, I will, I will. But if the intro was similar to the DMC five and true, I would never skip it. I can promise you guys that what the devil. I know you haven't yet. Yeah, just to open. Remember with the one they were in the mean event or the I guess the van. Yes. And the character and the lady and that entire intro, the music, the shooting, like the slow motion, DMC five intro. If there is something like that, I will never skip it. Because every time I play that again, I never skip the intro. I really watch it multiple times, which is awesome. And Grandmaster don't look it up because it will spoil the story for you. So can you stop looking it up because I can see it in your eyes. You're searching it up right now. I'm currently not, but I'm tempted. Yeah, it's the rabbit hole. Honestly, just go play DMC five and then go play the first one in reverse. I will. If I play the best version of a game, it's going to be really hard for me to play the earlier versions. You're never going to play it over your versions. I'm already playing one. I'll just go start to one with the last time you played it. It's been probably a year. I told you the switch two came out and took over. That wasn't the reason why he already stopped playing the game before. No, that's not the anime. And the anime came out in April of last year. The switch did not come out until June. Okay, yeah. Grandmaster to yourself. It took you two months to finish a game that takes three hours to beat. It didn't take me. He didn't realize he wasn't going to play it in dose. I know there were some moments where he did call me. Instead, he was stuck on the first boss, the spider boss. Yeah, there were sometimes, yeah, I had to take a break because I was ready to throw the controller. Wait, this is coming from the person who's still in the first part of horizon. For a bit on the first part, I'm like, if I need to pull up, I'll pull up the percentage. I'll screenshot it and show it to you. Yeah, you need to play Sekiro, by the way, unscreened battle. Sekiro, Elden Ring, Liza, P, you got to play those games. Yeah, we need to happen tomorrow. We need to keep it up with the game to play right now. I'm going to put in DMC to start with the best one. You'll like that one. Actually, you know what? No, just played DMC, the remake. No, I'm not that. No, I don't have it. It's unrelated to the rest of the series. I have one through three. No, no, no, no, no, no, you don't understand. DMC, the remake is unrelated to the rest of the game. It's a separate universe. I think I actually, no, I watch the cutscene of it, but I played him in PlayStation Heroes, PlayStation All Stars. Yeah, that was the Dante and that one. Yeah. Well, I think that wraps up our thoughts here at the Young Go Table for Devil May Cry season two. Let us know what you all think down in the comments section wherever you're listening to us on whether it be Apple podcasts, YouTube, Spotify, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok at the Young Go Table. And we'll catch you on the next one. I'm your Yonko host, Dr. Jason Terny, fellow Yonko Grandmaster Hoop and Supernova's Toasty And Dr. Mondo, uh, Grandmaster likes to end these on something stupid. Jackpot, uh, thing the season one intro is easy. Go.

Summary:
1, and express anticipation for season three, hoping for more focus on Mary's quest against the Jester and potential appearances from Nero. Overall, they see the show as a successful adaptation that honors the games' essence while forging its own path.
FAQs
The panel generally agrees season two is better than season one, with improved focus, animation, and emotional depth, particularly around Dante and Virgil's relationship. It received high ratings, with most giving it a 9 out of 10.
The show deviates from the games by reordering events and adding original content, but it keeps the essence of the franchise. The panel appreciates this approach, as it allows for a cohesive story that expands on the universe without being a carbon copy.
Main criticisms included the lack of a memorable intro theme compared to season one and the villain Arius being less compelling than the White Rabbit from season one. Some also disliked the inclusion of certain original characters like Luke and Maddie.
Virgil is voiced by Robbie Daymond, Arius by Graham McTavish, and Luke is voiced by Keith David. The voice acting was praised as superb throughout the season.
In the show, Dante says 'sons of Ava' instead of 'sons of Sparta' to honor their mother, which fits the story's emphasis on their maternal connection. This change was accepted by the panel as it makes sense within the context of the series.
The panel expects a season three, likely next year, as the story has set up future conflicts, including Mary's quest against her father and the ongoing threat of Mundus. The ending leaves room for continuation.
