I know that there has been a lot of despair around the Dolphins for a long time, but I legitimately have never seen it like this, where hope is lost before the season has even started, and Dolphin bars all over towns, as have nobody in it. Because everybody knows that the team is terrible, and it's a big victory when your field goal team is only down eight at the half against San Francisco, where you're just clearly overmatched and you don't have a professional football team to rival the other NFL teams. Yesterday was a really rough watch. Like, I didn't feel that way week one. Like, you know, all right, I'm entertained here. They're in the game. Yesterday was very, very tough. They have nothing going for them. Defense is on the field. Like, they were scoring touchdowns every single time they had the ball, San Francisco. Well, Brock Purdy was incredible yesterday. Like, that first and foremost. But what do you expect from the Dolphins? Like, you're saying it's tough, but you know what the outcome's going to be. They're going to lose. You just got to see how Malik Willis plays. Yeah, but here's the thing, though, Tony, OK? Yes, you know they're bad. But all over that league, teams you know are bad, all of a sudden the Titans are keeping it close when they're playing against the Eagles. All over that league, nobody's so bad. I mean, yeah. You got what Atlanta does yesterday when they throw their fourth-string quarterback out there. But generally speaking, you have a chance in a salary-capped sport to keep some of these games close unless you're playing the 49ers and they have 54 pro bowlers or pro bowl appearances and you've got the one pro bowl selection on your active roster. Yeah, I thought yesterday was really tough to watch. And if you go up and if you go back and look at the Dolphins' one-win season, Cam Cameron's year, they lost a lot of close games. A lot of close games. We might be watching the worst Dolphin team of all time. Even the one they won was close. Camarillo into the end zone for the 80-yard scale. Like, that was it. And it was like a four-point game. I expect them to keep some of the games close at home, but that's not saying much. Jeremy, give me some of those Purdy stats because they didn't even throw to Kittle in the first half and then they started throwing to him in the second half. He just runs around uncovered. All game. Purdy completed all 10 of his downfield pass attempts, which is 10-plus air yards against the Dolphins. It was 211 yards and a touchdown on those. It's the most completions without an incompletion by a quarterback on downfield passes since 2021 when Carson went in. It's like watching a good college team against a really bad college team and the good team just does whatever they want. All right. Since he's talking about completions, let's move it to the team, the professional team locally. That actually has a chance to do something this year. The University of Miami plays Wake Forest and I fell in love with the super Hispanic Wake Forest combination of Lopez to Hernandez. What a revelation that was when we're warming up and I see Gio Lopez and I'm like, okay, I like that name. His best receiver, Carlos Hernandez. And I'm like, I know seven Carlos Hernandez's. Yeah. Put it on the poll at Levitard Show. Are there seven Carlos Hernandez's in every Miami classroom? Uh, the thing that I wanted to talk about here though, and I want to set the expectations off the top because I don't want people to hear from me in a game where their quarterback completes his first 24 passes, something that sounds overly critical. So let's just set the bar at the way that we're talking about the hurricanes this year is as if they're fixed. And because of their schedule, the only two games where you're expecting the possibility of a loss are Notre Dame. Notre Dame and the ACC championship game, because their schedule is pretty easy and everyone can see watching them. That's a really professional offense. They have at least when Malachi Tony is healthy and moving around, but there were a lot of things that happened in that game says, uh, with that as the standard, with the understanding that you're expecting to be in the playoffs, it would be a wild disappointment if you are not one of the 12 best teams in the country. So the starting point. On this, I don't want to be overly critical when they're three and oh, when you're winning a conference game on the road by double digits, uh, wake forest offense is good, but some of the things that happened in that game, the clock management at the end of the first half, all of the, uh, injuries, the way that the second half had them after completing 24 straight passes, going for fewer than a hundred yards in the second half and fewer than like 15 in the fourth quarter, they just totally dried up. And that game was there for the taking for wake forest. Like there it's a 13 point game, but you could have seen a momentum swing where if wake forest makes a play or two, you're on your heels at the end of the game, backpedaling. Cause you went for a 54 yard field goal to try and make it a 16 point game instead of a 13 point game. And there was just some stuff in that game that a good opponent, a good opponent is going to take you down there. And most concerning, I would say to you, as, as you get ready to face car against Notre Dame in a really hostile environment, is that the way that they have to get pressure is by blitzing and they did it a ton and they did it well, but they can't get the pressure with four anymore. Are they, are they, it doesn't seem like they can in that game, get the pressure that they needed with four. Mike, what were your thoughts on what it is that you saw? I actually thought the edge rushers got going a little bit more and yeah, they did bring added pressure and you started seeing Thornton in that Keontae Scott, uh, role Keontae Scott showing you that he can do it in the NFL, by the way, he's just an elite blitzer. Thornton, a few people are as good as Keontae Scott, but Thornton's good enough there, uh, to help. Lightfoot got going a little bit, Wilson made impact plays and Wilson's been a bit of a frustrating watch. So that's been good. Moten went down early with a shoulder injury, came back in. Moten battled through injury all, all the last season. They're going to be different. You had Mesidor and Bain. That was the best pass rushing duo in Miami history. Corey Atherman is not a Bain merchant. He's not a Mesidor merchant. We can dial up, uh, pressures. But these are all domino effects too, because when you send extra numbers, you're going to stretch your secondary. And right now I saw a game in which a team was wearing losing cornerback one, cornerback two, running back one, running back two, wide receiver three, and your wide receiver one, your all world Heisman candidate has a muscular issue and you're limiting his reps and you essentially have them out there as a decoy. That is a recipe for disaster on a spooky Friday night. I don't think Wake is bad. I think Miami really respected Wake. They're good at offense. Yeah. I think Miami, well, no, their defensive line is also pretty active. That was one of the things that I noticed like entering the game. Miami's interior line is what concerns me the most outside of the injuries, which are just crazy. We were fortunate last year. This year, it's nuts. The interior line and the fact that young guys that you project to be an answer along that line, aren't getting the snaps yet. I trust Alex Mirabal and Mario Cristobal to figure that out. But you saw right there. I mean, I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to lie. So, the Canes have weak spots. was excellent in practice and could have helped but he was not good in that locker room not a good cultural fit you hated to see someone like that go i do think guys as the season goes on they'll develop but really concerning i mean these are lengthy injuries marty brown is always a forgotten guy in that backfield but he makes huge plays and when you follow up fletcher with marty brown who's a load who can do things in the receiving game that's a that's a luxury that you had your depth has got to get tested right now i think you can navigate all of them though what's happening in the secondary is tough but that second half dan that was sobering that was that was really unfortunate just three three yard screens like nothing was beyond the line of scrimmage we had as soon as tony i i didn't think that the offense would be so fragile and flimsy as a foundation that as soon as tony's stomach hurts a little bit malaki uh the offense went just totally into the toilet you imagine you tell a kid hey i'm sorry we just traded you to x school and then the kid's like yeah but that school doesn't have the classes that i need to take for my major i don't care tough you know try me to cincinnati i like trading for a recruit to be named later so it's like it ultimately um is like hey hey give us this pass rusher but we're so good at recruiting we'll get you at least a four star next year that we're going to recruit for your school not our school lofton also got nicked up that that was as bad as i've seen this miami offense operate for an extended period of time since tyler van dyke was here that was that was just nuts mike obviously the interior defensive line or offensive line is an issue it felt like their defensive line was living in the backfield but doesn't that give you actually like a bump for mensa who in the pressure in a muddy pocket was absolutely just amazing he has great poise that first half was tremendous in that wake forest is elite at limiting explosive plays and where dairy mensa is much different than cam ward is he won't go big play hunting he'll take what the defense gives him he's more than happy doing that and he did so at an acc record 35 of straight completion clip you want to sweeten the deal a little bit how about how about i give you some cash considerations on top of your nil program how about that two preferred walk-ons just to be clear on what happened in that game because they will see offense is better than this and their secondary is a problem uh foley going six catches for 120 yards and one touchdown uh that guy had one catch all of last year and didn't have a catch this season like that guy was running around through your secondary when he's not going to get a catch this season not an impact receiver for them and uh what happened there is uh concerning when you're looking at it through the context of a 13 point win against wake forest on the road isn't good enough when you have championship expectations and this is what happened in the first half okay and it was surprising to me to hear it because dana boyle is on the sidelines and in the first half when mensa has gone 20 for 20 they come out of the locker room and dana boyle says uh wake forest coach jack dickard says he's really happy with his defense and i'm like wait a minute like and he was yeah they were limiting the explosives but but he was 20 for the quarterback was 20 for 20 it's a record and they're coming out of the halftime and the sideline report is wake forest's coach is really happy with their defense when they didn't cause any incompletion and uh you saw and were concerned as well i would imagine mike that mensa and the offense ceased looking like that the moment that tony stretched for that ball and seemed to hurt his oblique the moment that tony was limited and by the way rest assured that tony is going to have multiple games this year where he throws deep because they're going to try and win him the heisman the way that travis hunter won the heisman with plays that are versatile as opposed to just being a wide receiver i'm guaranteeing you that there will be a tony touchdown pass this season and i'm guaranteeing you that they will often throw the ball with tony because they're going to try and get those plays uh for him uh but mike where were you concerned with uh the second half when you say you're invoking van dyke like it was yeah it was brutal but it was also by design and i know that's frustrating to hear especially when they made that really it was an aggravating call it was it's an iq test you don't kick a 54 yard field goal in that spot you go for you go for the fourth down there i you don't make a two-score Naturally, they missed it. But in talking to people, Miami had immense respect for Wake Forest and their staff. And what played out on the screen was a banged-up team. Lofton also got hurt there. That was just trying to get that over the line and trusted their defense to make the plays that the defense, in their defense, did make. I know it got – Miami was always in control, but it was always a play away from being tight butthole time. We're on the road here, spooky ACC Friday. But Miami put it on their defense to win the game, and they did. Coach tells you, hey, we just traded you to BYU. Kid's like, I'm not Mormon. You are now. Where's that? That's obviously something that I was not expecting. Because I believe their wide receiver room. I believe that Cam Ward didn't have this receiver room. And I believe that Carson Beck did not have this receiver room. And I just. I just didn't think it would go from 24 straight completions to a second half where you've got less than 100 yards in a fourth quarter where you've got less than 20. Well, you mentioned the receiver room. Big part of that. Lofton. Marty Brown. Mark Fletcher. Josh Moore. Josh Moore caught a touchdown the last two weeks. Josh Moore's now done. That's a guy that was ascending to wide receiver three status. He's gone. Your wide receiver one wasn't there. Your running back one. Running back two. And tight end one. There was a lot going on against Miami. Which is why they made the decision like, let's just survive. Let's just survive this one and get out of here. I've had this as your first six UM observations, Dan. Nine through four. I know we don't like the injuries. Obviously, that's not something that can be taken in any kind of positive way. But I also kind of felt like after the game, you know, you look at the Canes schedule. Are they ever going to be tested? Like, is it a good thing? Are they ever going to play on a Saturday? Is it a good thing that they're going to play Notre Dame and they haven't played any tight games yet? And I felt like, all right, there's probably coaches on the side. There's a lot of staff who liked what happened in the second half because you get to now yell at your kids. You get to yell at them and you get to watch the film and you get to coach them up. And it's like, all right, we're not as good as you think that we are. Like, coaches like that kind of thing. It was sobering because at halftime where you're like, wait, you're really entertaining. Is Mensah going to have more touchdowns and completions this season? Because they always say what the gulf is before the game and the gulf increases. Because he throws for seven touchdowns and the ball never hits the floor over there. To be clear. on those 24 straight completions he's doing some really good things it's not just because it's being made super easy for him he's off his back foot he's rolling away from people he's throwing to covered people like if you're not watching the game and you're just reading 24 straight completions you're thinking that the advantages are making that so that he's accurate but you've got amazing advantages as well that's not what was happening there he was under duress he makes more reads than carson beck does he he has the faith in his lower body really calm incredible poise uh certainly much more poise than carson beck has been and where he has some good cam ward elements he doesn't have cam ward's arm and cam ward's arm is basically why cam ward wouldn't really go through the progressions all that much was locked in on wide receiver one saw what was available underneath wouldn't take it would keep going to number one that's how essentially georgia tech beat miami in that game when cam was less than 100 so darian mensah is a perfect quarterback for this system and we can a variety of ways however when you start losing high-end talents you lose some of that versatility and it leads you to be a little scared by the way watch notre dame a little bit too they got their own problems they were one of a few i think they're one of two fbs programs that has yet to rattle off a 20-yard run that first half was also concerning i love that freeman though continually tries in his own territory fake punts on 4th and 15 and 4th and 20 fake double reverse punts in his own territory i do enjoy it that he's doing that the marty brown injury was so gruesome they wouldn't show it again on television they did us all a favor and that was that was a great run concluding a yard before the end zone and when it happened like i didn't think anything of it like i was like all right he's short you know at the one we'll run him again that's it and then it's like all right we can't we came back from break yeah we can't show it to you it's so bad i was like what the hell happened does open the door for jordan jordan lyle to crack this rotation jordan lyle has basically become a myth it's something that is whispered about on message boards that this is one of the more talented people in the world and i think that's what's going to happen in the running backs we've ever seen a green tree that was number three by the way i've got 43 other observations uh remaining uh in the nfl and college football basket but we're staying with um for just a second dana boyle also reported i don't know if you guys saw this um i i would be made very happy if all of the sideline reporters did this dana boyle just said flatly pay the teachers like they said she said teachers are underpaid and that we need to pay the teachers and i was really happy about that also i was happy to see that motore is still out there uh just jacking people up knocking them out making them fumble also made me laugh when they said he's in his eighth year his his eighth is eighth year you feel a little bad when a 30 year old man's doing that to a 19 year old that part feels a little unfair i had to rewind it i was like wait what how many years it didn't result in a fumble they took the fumble away but the hit didn't go away it's because it's because you're watching your uncle tackling you at thanksgiving it's like watching it's like watching devin lloyd go through your fourth grade class and hit somebody he was good yeah he was uh speaking of that game nfl observation number 43 exclusive to this show unique to this show uh i miss darren waller ageless wonder if you need an out route for six yards and a touchdown you know who to call are the panthers good or the falcons just that bad no guys uh bryce young might be a good quarterback i think the panthers are okay yeah i think they're okay they might be all right uh put it on the poll are the panthers okay the other panthers the ones that we have locally that are defending champions they're a little bit better than okay look at that smile on roy's face i can't even tell dan you wouldn't believe how quick the dolphins moved off of the big tv in the zaslo mansion family room when the panther pre-season game started get the hell off of my television dolphins we're watching panther hockey i watched that entire game roy i loved it and you know what let me tell you something i'm a major sucker for nostalgia i am i i loved seeing radko gudis back out there in a panther sweaty number six now all right for those of you who are looking for number seven that belongs to my guy dimitri kulikov gudis is now number six same pairing though with dimitri i loved seeing the butcher that big look at beautiful hairy man right there with that beard i love that yeah nice i want to couch just by saying the carolina hurricanes pretty much who gives a master their ahl team and the prospects but yeah whatever got brady out there you see when brady stood up for barkov how about that someone someone hit barkov in the corner dan and brady kachuk's like uh-uh and brady fought that guy gordie howe hat trick last night man two goals and assist in that fight yep that's right what a night barky's back out there doing his thing marky's back out there doing his thing marky's back out there doing his thing markstrom a little bit less playing with the puck in the crease okay i could do without that you got some time to turn that around but overall the panthers last night that was fun seeing my boys those beautiful men skating around that was the one thing that i really noticed about last night's game was the amount of times that marksman played the puck i mean a lot more than sergey brodsky would have played but seeing seeing uh alexander barkoff on that break even reese the net he just shot it from the slide on the break i felt great watching my boys out there that was wonderful dan honestly can't believe that i live in a time in a city where a panthers preseason game is knocking off the dolphins off of zaz couldn't change it fast enough i just can't believe that that's the place that i live the space that we occupy as a show that uh you know i'm going to continue to call them the defending champions because they didn't have the title taken from them they were injured i mean technically they just played the defending champions but yes you're absolutely right come on there's there's a lot on the line for this season for the panthers there really is i am very very excited for the start of this season tony you know that moment at a party or a tailgate where everything just sort of clicks i know well it's usually when i show up everybody goes crazy yeah you usually take all the credit for it but it's because tony usually walks in with queer walking like this yeah yeah yeah cuervo is a thing that turns hanging out into this is the night it has that effect on people it does you usually take the credit for it but again it's a thing that it's the cuervo effect it's like that moment in a big game where everyone in the crowd just starts standing up hooting that off the ground world rar three colon our group chat has a pretty good feeling about this one this is the dan levitar show i will tell you something else that i noticed from the uh university of miami football game that number zero exciting to me uh yeah they're going to be some number problems with some of these lists i suspect actually let me do number 42 from the nfl list real quick here number 42 on my nfl list of unique observations only seen here exclusively on this show is less taylor swift yeah yeah suficiente bata that team that was that was fun to watch the chiefs yeah yeah but from the um game uh and they do this better in college than they do in the pros they do replay better in college than they do in the pros there was a 27 yard play they didn't have the camera angle on it and they didn't get a camera angle that showed uh clearly whether somebody's foot was in or out of bounds but they didn't get a camera angle on it and they didn't get a camera but they took you right into that referee's room and gave you total total transparency on everything that was happening there and i know they've been doing this now for a couple of years but they do it better than they do it in the pros they do it better the nfl does it one way but it's not this transparency where you're like don't you're you're listening to these guys and you're getting exactly how it is that they're discussing it and you're getting a transparency that is welcome there and and and also super interesting i feel like they're also going to really lean into it now the rest of the season because of what happened with Michigan and Western Michigan. I think they're going to take you in there as much as possible. The observations that I have are not just NFL observations. They're also collegiate observations. So number 41 on this list of my observations from football that are unique and big and specific to this show, FSU is now 0-10 in its last 10 road games with seven losses by double digits. That is brutal. Like, Florida has fixed some things. FSU has not. Gators might be good. And FSU? Like, FSU was up 21-6, I think it was, you know, at one point there in the second quarter and just got murdered in the second half. Gators' offense is really, really good. And Jaden Ball has run the damn ball. We're going to find out for sure this weekend about the Gators. They're playing Ole Miss. And Gators' schedule is crazy the next five weeks. But, man, FSU. I heard them say on the telecast that he's the best running back in the nation, but I heard that on six different telecasts. I heard that on six. There were six different telecasts where I heard somebody called the best running back in the nation. So who's the best running back in the nation? What is the actual answer to that question? One of the best running backs in all of football. But it wasn't one of the best. As good as anyone in football. It wasn't as good as anyone, and it wasn't one of the best. All six of the telecasts had that's the best running back in college football. So there was a game. I'm trying to remember which game it was where I heard the announcer refer to a tight end who looked like he was also in his eighth year as an old rusty truck as a compliment. Meant it as a compliment. You can trust him. You can trust him. Put it on the poll, please, at Levitard Show. Is calling the tight end an old rusty truck a compliment? How can a school, how can a program like FSU go multiple years, without winning a road game? Since 2024. I think they went 2-10 in 2024. They've gone 0-10 in their last 10 road games. And it's not just not winning road games. Seven of the losses are by double digits. This is a premier franchise. This is a franchise that was 13 or 14 or 1. What is it? In 2023? And we have not seen in that sport a collapse that goes that quickly to that. Where you go from we lose one game all season, if our quarterback doesn't hurt, we would have been playing for the championship, too. We're 2-10 the next season and then can't get up off the ground. It's actually been happening in college football. TCU's totally fallen off since making it to a national. No, but they were a runner-up. They made it to a championship game. They got to the dance.
