Crucial KS Senate Race, Elon's $366M Midterm Spree, Trump Weighs Firing Guilfoyle: AM Update 10/13

The Kansas Senate race has dramatically shifted from a foregone Republican victory to a closely contested race, fueled by new polling and rising national concerns over economic and political instability. Democrat Adam Hamilton, a centrist pastor, is gaining traction by positioning himself as a reformer against Trump-era policies like tariffs and healthcare costs, while former governors have endorsed him over the incumbent, Roger Marshall. Marshall, however, faces criticism for aligning too closely with President Trump and for labeling Hamilton as “too liberal” or “woke,” which resonates poorly in conservative Kansas. Meanwhile, Elon Musk is quietly channeling over $300 million into Republican campaigns, especially in Texas, through targeted voter operations, marking a significant political investment despite limited public involvement. On the national stage, Sean Diddy Combs has been reported to have left prison under medical care after a head injury, and Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, is under intense scrutiny due to multiple allegations of improper financial exchanges, inappropriate conduct, and a hostile work environment at the embassy. These developments reflect broader political tensions, with voters increasingly seeking alternatives to entrenched leadership, and with major figures using influence, money, and personal narratives to shape the political landscape.

Democrats making a major investment in the Kansas. Senate race as new polling shows incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall locked in a tight contest against Democrat Adam Hamilton. According to CNN, Senate Majority PAC, that's the leading super PAC supporting Democrat Senate candidates, committing $5 million to the race, while Republicans are spending nearly $10 million on advertising to defend Marshall's seat in this red state. The spending coming after a recent New York Times poll finding Marshall and Hamilton tied at $14. Among likely voters. The prediction market, Kalshi, meantime, showing a somewhat different picture, with traders pricing the Republican Marshall's chances of winning at 61% compared to 39% for Hamilton. However, just two months ago, Marshall's chances of victory were at more than 80%, showing the trajectory of this race. Give our sponsor Kalshi a try by using code Megan Kelly or clicking the link in the description. All new users get $25 free. Trade $25. It's fun. The Cook Political Report also moving the race from lean Republican to toss up last week in a state that has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1932. Kansas now joins Texas, Alaska, and Iowa on a growing list of traditionally Republican states where Democrats are investing in hopes of picking up Senate seats come November. President Trump winning Kansas by 16 points in 2024, though the New York Times poll finding 55%. Of likely voters there disapprove of his job performance. Now, Democrats hoping to benefit from an unconventional candidate in Adam Hamilton, a prominent Methodist pastor leading a Kansas City area megachurch serving approximately 24,000 members. Hamilton, a registered Republican until February of this year before launching his Senate campaign as a Democrat in April. Now describing himself as an independent minded Democrat. Hamilton making a point of distancing himself from. The party's national leadership. The candidate telling CNN he would not support Chuck Schumer as Senate leader, while his campaign reportedly rejected an offer from a sitting Democrat senator to campaign on his behalf. Hamilton also picking up support from prominent Republicans in Kansas, including former governors Mike Hayden and Bill Graves, both of whom have endorsed the Democrat over Marshall. The two former governors accuse Senator Marshall of putting national Republican politics ahead of the interests of Kansas voters. Senator Marshall, meanwhile, pushing back on Hamilton's claims of political independence, accusing his Democrat opponent of misleading voters about his longstanding support for Dems. In an ex post yesterday, Mr. Marshall calling Hamilton, quote, the ultimate snake oil salesman, pointing to his past donations to Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. The senator also highlighting Hamilton's recent comments on ABC News, in which the candidate acknowledged that Obama inspired him politically. Nearly. Two decades ago. We spoke with Kansas reflector politics reporter Tim Carpenter, who recently served as a media panelist during a debate between Marshall and Hamilton at the Kansas State Fair. Carpenter offering his assessment of the political environment and describing what he observed firsthand during the debate. I think that the national political environment where you have President Trump advocating for policies that are actually detrimental to much of rural Kansas tariffs, war. Few. And then general consumer concerns have raised the idea that maybe a U.S. Senator, Roger Marshall, who has been a very, very loyal to the president, might be the wrong person at this time. I was part of a panel of journalists who threw questions at the these two U.S. Senate candidates at a debate at the state fair recently, and the crowd was noticeably more irritated with the incumbent, Senator Marshall, than it was. The challenger, Mr. Hamilton. So this is an unexpected event, but maybe natural national issues and maybe the demeanor of of the current U.S. senator have have triggered this. Carpenter also pointing to economic concerns facing rural Kansas, describing how Hamilton is positioning himself as the alternative to the incumbent. You can always follow the money. The economy is rocked in Kansas. Rural economy is in terrible shape. And you have. In Adam Hamilton, a centrist. His campaign is completely and utterly built around being a centrist and trying to dissolve some of the hostility and craziness that comes out of Washington, D.C. And so that's really at the core of his message. Let's let's get rid of the chaos. Let's get rid of some of these tariffs that Trump imposed. There's issues with health care costs. And I just think all of these things that can be understood by. Conservatives, independent and Democratic voters are what's resonating here. And they don't believe that Roger Marshall, as he has endorsed much of the president's agenda, has done much to push back on those issues. Carpenter also weighing in on Marshall's attacks on Democrat Hamilton and how they're playing with Kansas voters. One of the things that Marshall has said from the beginning is that the Hamilton, who's the leader of a very large church, is too. Woke, he's too liberal and define woke. I mean, help people understand that one of the thing about this, you got to remember, is that a Democrat in in Kansas is not a California Democrat or a New York Democrat is pretty conservative state and even Democrats have a real conservative streak. So when Roger Marshall says that Hamilton is a socialist, people don't even know how to relate to that. I mean, a socialist really are. Do they exist in Kansas? Elon Musk quietly pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into Republican efforts to hold on to Congress, despite taking a much less visible role in this year's midterm elections. According to The New York Times, the billionaire donating more than two hundred and seventy six million dollars or in Elon's world, lunch money to Republican political groups since July alone and more than three hundred and sixty six million during the two thousand twenty five to twenty six cycle, making him. And by far the largest known donor in the midterms, the largest contribution going to the Senate Leadership Fund. That's the leading super PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates, which received one hundred and fifty eight million from Musk over the summer. Musk also directing more than seventy six million to America PAC, the political organization he established during the twenty four presidential election to help turn out Republican voters. The three hundred and sixty six million from Musk surpassing the roughly two hundred and ninety million he spent. Helping elect President Trump and other Republicans in twenty twenty four. The spending marking a dramatic reversal from May of last year when Musk publicly declared he intended to significantly scale back his political contributions. Despite spending more than ever, Musk largely staying out of the spotlight this election cycle. The Times reporting the world's richest man has taken a more hands off approach to his political operation, focusing on his businesses and leaving much of the day to day decision making. To his advisers, a notable departure from twenty twenty four when Musk regularly appeared alongside President Trump and personally campaigned for Republican candidates. candidates. The two men appearing to have repaired their relationship following their highly publicized falling out last year, attending several events together in recent weeks. Texas emerging as a major focus of Musk's political spending, particularly the closely watched Senate race between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Tallarico. New York Times political reporter Theodore Schleifer explaining to MSNOW yesterday why the billionaire is concentrating so much attention on his adopted home state. This year, he is kind of spending the most, it seems, in Texas, the state where he lives, the state where he has extensive business interests. It's the state where he appears the most animated by at least the Democratic candidate. Musk donated $10 million to the super PAC behind Ken Paxton, James Tallarico's opponent. But essentially, the geography may be different than in 2024, but a lot of the tactics are the same. People may remember Musk was placing a huge emphasis on registering voters. He was carrying these big oversized checks that he would hand out for up to a million dollars to people who signed a petition that he was circulating. A lot of this is the same. There are some things that are different. Elon is not as involved personally in kind of what he's doing compared to 2024. But a lot of this rhymes with what we saw two years ago. Mark Halperin reporting Musk and his advisors are considering spending an additional $50 to $200 million in Texas alone between now and Election Day. According to four sources who spoke to Halperin, that money would support an extensive voter turnout operation, TV advertising, and a digital campaign. Coming up, Sean Diddy Combs leaving the big house in an ambulance after a medical operation. Emergency. And Kimberly Guilfoyle facing new scrutiny over her conduct as U.S. ambassador to Greece. As President Trump makes clear, he is, quote, not happy. Veterans Day is coming up, and Birch Gold Group is commemorating it with something I think you're going to really appreciate. The Associated Press reporting Sunday that President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are very angry over recent allegations and could make a decision about Guilfoyle's future sometime this week. President Trump addressing the reports yesterday evening outside the White House. One senior U.S. official telling the AP Secretary Rubio is particularly upset following his visit to Athens last week, during which Guilfoyle was arrested. Guilfoyle accompanied him to several events and greeted him with a hug, even as the allegations against her continued to mount. The New York Post also reporting Guilfoyle is now on what one source close to the White House describes as, quote, very thin ice. The latest controversy stemming from a new Wall Street Journal investigation detailing the former Fox News host's relationships with wealthy Greek businessman who allegedly financed her luxury travel and attempts to secure a high-profile dinner invitation, creating controversy. Conflicts of interest. The Journal obtaining an audio recording of Guilfoyle speaking to an American businessman at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, back in January, while attempting to secure an invitation to an exclusive dinner honoring Eric Trump. Guilfoyle reportedly promising the businessman lucrative opportunities if he helped her gain entry, telling him, quote, I'm going to make you a lot of fucking money. The ambassador also expressing outrage that she had been excluded from the guest list insisting the event's organizer should be showing her considerably more respect. Guilfoyle ultimately attending the dinner after securing a last-minute invitation. The same recording also reportedly capturing Guilfoyle discussing her extensive travels with two prominent Greek businessmen, among them Alexandros Exarhou, the CEO of construction giant Aktor Group. The Journal previously reporting Guilfoyle had encouraged several European governments to purchase billions of dollars in natural gas, through Exarhou's company. His private jet then took her to Davos, raising questions about her involvement in advancing his business interests, possibly in exchange for personal benefits. The recording also revealing Guilfoyle's close relationship with Greek shipping magnate Nicholas Tsakos, who she said was arranging her transportation to Paris for his wife's fashion show. According to the Journal, the magnate also covering Guilfoyle's accommodations at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel George V during that trip. The report follows earlier revelations from the Journal about Guilfoyle's alleged efforts to persuade a Trump donor to cover $100,000 of her American Express bill ahead of her Senate confirmation hearing. The ambassador allegedly offering in exchange to use her political connections to help said donor resolve personal legal and financial problems. Guilfoyle's attorneys dispute the allegations, maintaining the money represented outstanding payments for speaking engagements and public appearances arranged before her nomination, which the donor denies. The controversy also extending to Guilfoyle's management of the American Embassy in Athens. The Daily Mail reporting last week that embassy employees had accused Guilfoyle of creating a hostile work environment, including allegedly berating staff members and threatening their jobs. Guilfoyle's representatives rejecting suggestions she violated any ethics rules. A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Athens telling the Wall Street Journal that Guilfoyle has complied with State Department requirements governing gifts and financial disclosures while dismissing the allegations as unsubstantiated distractions from her diplomatic work. According to the Wall Street Journal, the State Department's inspector general is investigating the allegations. And that'll do it for your AM update. I'm Megyn Kelly.
