Cox Plate Day Preview

The Racing Previews podcast opens with reflections on The Everest, where the world's top-rated sprinter Ka Ying Rising was defeated by Tempted. The panel analyses the ride from Purton, concluding the horse simply wasn't good enough on the day and may not have handled the ground or the turn. Tempted's rating of 105.9 is slightly down on her Premier Stakes effort but confirms her status as Australia's best sprinter. The hosts also criticise the World Pool tote for failing to update live prices quickly enough, with Tempted's odds showing $15.50 at the 200-metre mark before flashing $8 at the post. The discussion moves to Gavin Bedggood's Caulfield Cup win with Kingswood, with one host celebrating on camera, and the controversial stewards' ruling on the race incident that claimed a horse's life. The panel also reviews Autumn Glow's King Charles Stakes victory and the strong on-pace bias at Caulfield. Attention then turns to Cox Plate week at Flemington, covering the barrier draw, key contenders including Sir Delius, Aliana, War Woven, Birdman, and the backing-up pair Cosmic Crusader and Ceolwulf. The hosts debate whether the three-year-olds can measure up and consider Birdman's chances under a fast tempo. They preview the full Flemington card race by race, nominating Ice Cool and Lindemann as best bets, before answering listener questions on racing bucket lists, memorable punting losses, and AI's future role in form analysis.

Speaker 5G'day punters Welcome back to another episode of the Racing Previews podcast. As you can tell, we are very much up and about for Cox Plate Week after Everest weekend. The best horse in the world gets beaten and my five-figure collection has not come in. We live in a world where we can't win. We live to fight another day. I think there's still a. Barely living, barely fighting. Nah, if you don't laugh, you'll cry. And I'll tell you what, I've cried. I've done plenty of that too. I think there's still a part of my heart at the hundred metre line at Randwick, but we'll get straight into it. Right next to where mine is,
Speaker 6where Nature's Shrimp could be.
Speaker 5The Everest was won by 10, last week, fellas. She's run to a rating of 105.9, which is slightly down on her Premier Stakes performance. Obviously, Koeing Rising has rated a long way down on his Hong Kong form and even on his form of last year. At the top of the straight, it looked like he was going to run dead set closer to last than first. He didn't handle the turn at all well. Neither did I. Look, I don't have too many problems with the ride from Purton. They were going very quick, early. He lobbed. Look, he was wide early, but they weren't going around a turn yet. He found a three wide with cover position eventually. He popped off. He gave the horse his chance. He wasn't good enough at the end of the day, Nico.
Speaker 6Yeah, there wasn't anything wrong with the ride. That was just the way they had to go. They, I thought initially that, uh, why not just push forward and just keep burning, but then obviously once you dissect the race and we get all the data and the evidence back, they, they were going. A solid clip. And, um, yeah, I just don't think he was confident in the ground. I don't think he handled the bend. And like, that was pretty evident. Like if he trusted the ground, maybe he does work him up outside and burn him on the speed, knowing that he can work hard for 1200 meters of wind. But at the end of the day, he probably has three legs on tempted. He's gone to his worst. He's gone to her number. He's been beaten by a bee's dick. And that's probably fair to say. That's where the three links is. He's regressed from his number. Yeah. I think he's run to hers. And at this, at this level, like it's not like he's been beaten by a hack. He's been beaten by our best sprinter and you've got to try and take the emotion out of it as hard as that is. Um, yeah, I didn't like, I didn't like seeing, I didn't like being beat by my favorite horse, but, um, anyway, that's, that's racy. Unfortunately, as, as much as we like to say it, as much as people like to hear that, you know, it's probably, it's probably a good reminder that nothing is a moral in racing. As much as I like to sit here and say, this is a certainty. No, no, nothing is a moral in racing.
Speaker 5We've seen she's alibi.
Speaker 7There's three things that are certain in life. Well, death taxes. Yeah. And? Birth.
Speaker 6Yeah, you're a moral to get born, you're a moral to die, you're a moral to pay Zacks. There you go. But what did you, you make of it?
Speaker 5We've seen a couple of really short price favorites go down now this spring, $1.30 for she's alibi and the might and power, $1.05 for Cain rising in the world pool. I'll get to that in a second, but what'd you make of the race? Oh, it was a fun race to watch.
Speaker 8Oh yeah, brilliant. It's easy for me to say. You didn't have a dog in the race. You didn't have a dog in the fight. Well, I obviously wanted Cain rising to win for you too. Did you? Of course I did. It doesn't fucking sound like it. Of course, of course I did. But I'm just saying as a racing fan, it was fun. Oh yeah, correct. But it wasn't fun seeing you guys lose. I hate to say that, but I would have loved to see him win by, come out and win by five or six lengths, but unfortunately it wasn't to be, and he'll go back to Hong Kong for champions day and- He'll win by 10. Yeah. So I'd love to see- What's the go?
Speaker 5What's the go? Do you think he's just, he's just not the same horse? In Australia, traveling, acclimatization-
Speaker 8I don't know. I'm the wrong person to ask about these things. I'm not, I'm not completely sure for whatever reason. I mean, we've only seen him here twice, like it's a very small sample size, but he has
Speaker 6been- It's a big enough sample size. Yeah. It's a big enough sample size now.
Speaker 8It's, um, it's, it's, he's obviously not as good and, and you know, that's, that's typical of horses anywhere that, that travel, um, you know, on a plane and have to settle into a very different environment, obviously Hong Kong is a, is completely different to what Canterbury would be for Kying Rising and, um, he mustn't, well, for, at least for racing, I've seen a couple of photos of him just, um, smashing some grass and stuff like that. He looked like he loved it out there at Canterbury, but, uh, unfortunately for racing, it doesn't seem to be- He's banned, he's banned from the grass paddocks now.
Speaker 5Maybe he loves it too much.
Speaker 8Yeah. Well, maybe. I'm not sure, but he, he was beaten and that, and that's that, but, um, hopefully he comes
Speaker 5back next year. It's full credit to Tempted. Hopefully she goes, wins a champion sprint on champion's day and then can go to Royal Ascot next year.
Speaker 6Oh. And beat champions though, I swear to God.
Speaker 5And win a Jubilee.
Speaker 6Yeah. That would be a big dagger. Um. I can see, I can see how this script goes. I can see how this script goes.
Speaker 5I wonder if they change things up with Kying Rising this year.
Speaker 6They have to, Ben.
Speaker 5They have to. Bring him over a little bit earlier. Yep. Run him in the shorts. Yep. Get him, get him rock hard fit because both times he's come over here, he just hasn't
Speaker 6been a- Well, we can't say that he wasn't rock hard fit. He's, he's run the hands off the fucking clock before he's come here.
Speaker 5Yeah. But then five minutes, 10 minutes before the jump, like. Yeah. Some yard analysts that we do respect were saying he's not, he's, he doesn't look as good attempted. Yeah.
Speaker 6So that's what I'm saying. Like to run that time that he ran in Hong Kong, and I know you can't just say, well, Hong Kong's is, Hong Kong's that, whatever. Like he, something, something happens from when he goes from Hong Kong to here. So yeah, I would love to put my finger on it, but I sort of just kind of want to move
Speaker 5on. Yeah. So a couple minutes out before the jump.
Speaker 6Yeah. A couple of minutes before the jump.
Speaker 5So a couple of minutes before the jump.
Speaker 6Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah. So. That's, that's a question mark.
Speaker 5Yeah. Yeah. That's a question mark. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 6Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 8Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 5Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 6Yeah. Yeah. I've got going on for a big result.
Speaker 5And mind you, I've marked in my 100 cent market, I marked Cain rising a dollar 60, I marked tempted $6. On the Whirlpool, he's a dollar 05 and tempted is $16 and 10 cents right before they're about to jump. So I'm like, this is, this is a massive over. I obviously have to save on tempted given I've got a really good result for Cain rising going. I have a few hundred on tempted. I'm going to go with $1. odds the fluctuations need to be updating way way quicker than they currently do because we can't have tempted if a fixed odds price can
Speaker 6fluctuate immediately why does the tote not
Speaker 5i mean it's a world pool so there's betting from offshore there's betting everywhere but there has to be a better way you cannot have the everest on and tempted's live price showing $15.50 as she's hit the front of the 200 and then as she goes past the finishing post it's eight dollars yeah it is just an absolute crock of shit and we need to get
Speaker 6better at that yeah can we stop talking about this race you know
Speaker 5rant over tempted you are australia's best sprinter hands down hopefully you win the champion sprint as well oh if she doesn't canadian rising you were beaten but gee he was bloody brave and i think um you know
Speaker 6what actually hurts the most how close you got yes that but people saying that they admire him more after he's lost oh fuck off dead set i don't need to hear that rot yeah the other big
Speaker 5victory on the day was the caulfield cup won by gavin bedge good friend of the show so gav well done you've won the caulfield cup on kingswood and if anyone was watching the screens live on channel seven or on racing.com they dead set would have thought this man in the studio was
Speaker 6he i'll look at me was
Speaker 5either a part owner or the assistant trainer now i've gone back onto gavin bedge good's profile on racing.com and i just wanted to check that will alford wasn't there in training in partnership will full credit for training the caulfield cup winner
Speaker 8thank you very much guys it's a privilege um yeah no no no no i mean i've watched i've watched the video back a couple times and i'm obviously hanging on to the coattails and i was it was a bit of a hard tag i was getting cat back a bit of a hard yeah i know and it was a little bit one-sided but i you know i i told him i don't
Speaker 6know it was a heart attack the heart attack that betty cop when i went and saw him in that game yeah uh who did you play that game parkside yeah it's parkside yeah no no look
Speaker 8i was just i was very excited and i hope i didn't ruin his moment but jeez i was excited and um it's something that i'll remember for the rest of my life and i'm very lucky to um have watched the race with him obviously me and gavin are good mates so um yeah look i'm i'm so lucky for that i'm yeah i don't know and you didn't
Speaker 5bother to tell us he was going to lob fifth in the run the punters got left in the dark the racing previews punters
Speaker 6not even the racing previews punters well the racing previews panel i
Speaker 8i spoke to gav during the week i was like we were speaking about tactics earlier on if you're not involved and he he said he was you know he made the decision he was going to be ridden conservatively because he was worried about the um mile and a half obviously and um uh you know i mean everyone knows the change of tactics rule is a bit of a joke but um so let me let me just clear this up are
Speaker 5you saying that you single-handedly won gav the corfield no that's not what i'm not telling him to go forward that's not
Speaker 8what i did at all no that was was all all gavin gavin he sounds like a lot of patty on my own back here i didn't do anything no i had nothing to do with it i was just lucky enough to be there with gavin gavin we watched it together and i was um you know i gave him a hard tag and uh i was very happy for him you know like did you no i'm good um um yeah like i remember watching the moya stakes and when he won his first group one and i'm so happy for him then and i was so lucky to watch i think i was on
Speaker 5camera with him that
Speaker 8yeah yeah um but not as long as you and uh i have a habit of getting on the tv and i promise i don't mean to it just happens no you do don't don't sit there bullshit well i i i just i just get caught in the moment and i'm not you just coincidentally end up there yeah well it wasn't my fault kingsville won the cocks plate was it the cocks plate i mean the um yeah so i i mean it's something i remember for the rest of my life and i'm very lucky and i hope i didn't ruin gav's moment i think i think on saturday night
Speaker 5you might have had a gutful to be fair and you said i'd had a gutful of him
Speaker 8you said gav was going to
Speaker 5come on the podcast yeah i did forget it right yeah
Speaker 8no we can do that well apparently kingswood's um thinking going to the hong kong vars which will be um something interesting so is that what
Speaker 5kingswood is thinking is he well yeah that's
Speaker 8fuck it up gav i think gav said the plan was uh zipping classic and then onto the hong kong vars uh potentially so i might have to book tickets to hong kong so i can get my face on tv again there you go what a world oh yeah just lucky well
Speaker 6we should touch on the rest of the race
Speaker 8yeah we should talk about that it's yeah yeah i think you should tragically obviously i hope
Speaker 6i think um i think the stewards had an opportunity to make a point here and i felt like they haven't who was in the wrong though i believe rachel king and james johnson it wasn't their fault their horses lost
Speaker 8their footing they become unbalanced and it was just an accident
Speaker 6so a racing accident a horse has lost its life there's no nothing to see here what just because just because unfortunately yeah just because there was an accident you can have a car accident and someone's still still to blame and someone's still held responsible yeah so how is it any different well i
Speaker 8mean there's no there's no need to be pointing fingers it's um just a tragedy i'm
Speaker 6not i'm not coming for james or rachel here but i find it baffling how that there's nothing to see here a horse has lost its life we're lucky that another horse didn't lose its life we're very lucky that two jockeys have come out of this unharmed yeah and the stewards are saying that's okay that's what they're saying here that's okay
Speaker 8well i mean there's no need to rub them out if there was no obvious wrongdoing it was just that there was an unfortunate incident i think it's a good debate i think it's a good debate i think i think i think it was i
Speaker 5think it was weak as piss looking at the overhead i think green spaces is the horse that causes the most yes uh most interference yeah he shifts in so you can't and then james is going for that run on king's valley it shuts and then they all just came in half yours goes down and then it's really sad i hope her wins um goes down as well and uh she's unfortunately lost her life so obviously thoughts with all the connections we're bloody lucky not to lose the the uh the caulfield cup and melbourne cup winner of last year as well yeah i just think
Speaker 6it's very um very convenient that there's nothing to see here but anyway well you know interesting
Speaker 5the car accident sort of analogy is an interesting one because it's like you are right well it's no different
Speaker 6when there is a car accident it's
Speaker 5always someone's fault like if you run up the back of someone even if they broke hard in front of you it's your fault so
Speaker 6how is it any different it's not and i'm right but anyway
Speaker 5they are they are animals they're unpredictable
Speaker 6yeah so are humans but it's it's it's it's it's a good chat just because you have a car accident in the middle of the freeway is that you're unpretty yeah you're predicting what other people are doing it's no different
Speaker 5what other what other good performances uh did you find at caulfield on saturday um calvary girl won really well um yeah
Speaker 8dry track no problem no of course not um she yeah she's just a fast horse she her issue is that she's i think she's just a thousand meter horse um through and through and she's um nothing wrong yeah nothing wrong with that of course and obviously there's only two thousand meter group one races on the australian calendar so there's her options are pretty limited to to get that group one and obviously she ran second in the moyer stakes and i think that's where she'll be predominantly campaigned she's a really good horse she started her campaign in a benchmark 70 and ran second at the start of this campaign and um she's ended up running a second in a moyer and and now winning the um the henley home sprint which is a group two race so uh tom david's done an excellent job with her and i think he'll continue to do caulfield sprint yeah whatever it's called and um a thousand guineas sadly dan said kieran marge is this race um certainly dancer and ice lady went to the front and got a pretty easy time of it look they didn't go very fast and um obviously the the people that do kieran marge tactics are very good at what they do we were saying i i think even this this spring they've just got it so right on just about every single occasion they're so good at what they do and uh they owned this race they knew the track pattern um and uh you look look yeah i mean how do their
Speaker 5horses keep finding three four lengths
Speaker 8they're just they're just very well managed stuff it they're just very well managed horses and they're able to keep them going and they're very well conditioned and i don't think saintly dancer will be the best horse out of this race i think that's regal ambition uh is regal ambition do we know if she's she's going to the vanity the vanity is 1400 meters absolute fucking seat so i i thought they might go push on to 2000 meters oh thank god for the lot okay so she's going back to 14 i i think she's a mile mile to mile and a quarter horse so that's a little bit interesting but
Speaker 6i hope you mark her positively negatively in the vanity because i think sure she did
Speaker 8well yeah she's a really nice horse and um she tracked into it like she was going to win yeah i i think it was just a case that that the track was favorite horses up and in yeah what'd you what'd you make of the track well it was
Speaker 5it's the most biased track at corfew we've seen for a little
Speaker 8bit yeah it was um back to its old tricks was uh quite an advantage to be toward the rail and i'm tracked into it like it was gonna win yeah yeah um like i had
Speaker 5caught connie in the last and i knew i i knew my bet was absolutely cast that shadow bar was
Speaker 8probably gonna win well shadow bar had a a really good time of it um went an even speed a bit but the horses that were sort of between Shadavar and Concord Corny were little bits of quite a roadblock. And I think Concord Corny, I think if you're going to follow a horse out of the meeting, it's Concord Corny. I think wherever she goes next start, I think she's going to be a one to five.
Speaker 5Get her to a big track shot. 1,600 metres of Flemington, please.
Speaker 8With a new jockey. Will she be able to get into the Empire Rose? Probably not. Probably not.
Speaker 5Well, it depends if it's a full field. If it's not a full field, she gets in form. Needs a new jockey. Jet's not the man. Yeah. Jet's not in the top 20 in Victoria.
Speaker 6Exactly right. So big track, new jockey, half a brain. No, don't say that. Half a brain of tactics can win.
Speaker 5Look, all the chat during the week, and I think it's been the most overplayed thing of all time. And look, I probably contribute to it a little bit, like with the weather reports saying it's raining. They had 100 mils of rain. Dave Funt has the track speed. The chute racing is a good four. That's bullshit. And the circle racing is a good 4.6 to 4.8.
Speaker 6Well, that's not right.
Speaker 5That's just what the time's saying. Yeah, but when it's like a, I think with these track speeds, when it's like a good, a genuine, really firm track, it's firmer than this. So this is, I would say it raced like a genuine soft five all day. Yeah. Yeah. Which is. It's, it just goes to show with these really good tracks, Randwick and Florentin, when they don't have rain on race day, and it's a warm day and a little bit of wind, they never, they never race heavy. Randwick and Florentin, if it's sunny on the day, even if they've had rain in the lead up, if they get 24 hours of clear blue skies and sunshine, it's almost certainly never going to race in the heavy range. So I thought that was a terrific job by them. We've already gone through the Everest, Graftonburn, as was a good winner of the Sydney Stakes. He ran to around 99 weight for age. It was a, it was a good result and a terrific ride. And, um, apocalyptic. Like I thought I had this race by the balls, the Silver Eagle backing Skyhook and Bay Valks, both at over the odds over what they started. And, um, she's got herself out of the wheelchair. And the other big performance bot was, um, was Autumn Glow beating Che Wolf and the King Charles. That race just always looked like it was going to set up well for her. Didn't it? Yeah.
Speaker 8I mean, she was pretty much always going to win that race. As soon as they went a hundred meters, she just got into a perfect spot and was much too good for them. How good was Just Folk running into third? That was awesome. What an amazing placement to get him there. And, um, yeah.
Speaker 5I mean, he's probably, he has been probably a beneficiary of Prada Jenny scratching during the week, but who cares?
Speaker 8That's not their problem. They've picked up however much money they did. Obviously it's a pretty poor for how many, however many, however, much money the King Charles is worth, but to have six horses in it and the, the first two peel off and win by however much they won by five links or whatever it was, but, um, I'm sure that doesn't concern the connections of third, fourth, and fifth.
Speaker 5So, and for Che Wolf, this is not a, this is not a hard run, is it? Like it's a good, good platform to back up.
Speaker 8Yeah. Yeah. I I'd say that's probably half the reason they did back up. They are backing up into the Cox plate, which is good. It's good to see him because he's, he's an extra. Um, sort of a element into the Cox plates. It's a, it's a good Cox plate, isn't it? It's a good Cox plate.
Speaker 5It could have been like a great Cox plate. If you had autumn glow, she's alibi autumn boy.
Speaker 8Yeah. I mean, it's, um, it's, it's not a, it's not a Cox plate where you have the top line talent of, you know, like a, a Winx or a VS sustainer, but it's, um, it's a Cox plate where there's, there's six, six or six or so horses that can win the race and which makes it, and they're all coming through pretty, um, different, um, form lines, which, you know, make, makes it a really, really good betting race and, uh, the betting will be fierce. Obviously we've got the three-year-olds, two, three-year-olds, which, um, makes it even better with the 49 kilos. So I'd say it's a, it's an excellent Cox plate from a betting point of view, even if it's not, um, a classic one.
Speaker 5And we'll get to the Cox plate more in depth very soon. Look, I must admit the race being at Florence in this year, the card isn't the strongest Cox plate card I've ever seen. I'm a lit and look the weekend gone past. Coming off that such a high, given the quality of racing to this, it's just not exciting me, this Cox plate at Flemington.
Speaker 6I'm still depressed, man.
Speaker 5And maybe some, maybe some of that is making, is the reason why I'm not quite as excited, but Flemington haven't given this a whole lot of love. They're not opening the birdcage. They're not opening the, aren't they? No, they're keeping, they're keeping like, what do they call the birdcage? And what's the other one? The car parks, the nursery. Yeah. None of that'll be open because it's not cup week. Get ready for me next week. And, and Moonee Valley are probably, they're probably lower on budget at the moment, lower on staff because they're in a rebuilding phase. So I just feel like the, the buildup to the Cox plate this year is just not what it usually is.
Speaker 8Maybe. I don't pay attention to that stuff. So you're probably right. No, I'd stick to my little bubble. All right. Have you boys sent me your races or what? Nick has, I haven't. I'll just. Can you please do all right now? Well, we're starting race one. That's the best bet of the day is.
Speaker 5All right. Um.
Speaker 6That's just what I needed, bot, to just chime in and have the same best as me.
Speaker 5Oh, hello. The good, the good thing. I'm, I'm really happy that Liam O'Keefe has given this meeting good respect and he's going rail true for the Cox plate day. And then he's still going to be rail true or maybe two meters for Derby day next weekend. It would have been.
Speaker 6There's enough circumference that they'll be right.
Speaker 5Yeah. A hundred percent. But it would have been. Well, remember what Caulfield did for Moonee Valley's Manicato day. They had it out.
Speaker 8Yeah. 10. More.
Speaker 5It was
Speaker 8like 13, 14 because of what
Speaker 5happened the week before. Yeah. Anyway, we're going to be rail true, true, or maybe even true two over the next two Saturdays, which is exactly what you want to see. Starting race number one. It is the Imperatories sprint. The open handicap thousand meters. Uh, it's usually a race one. There she was on Cox plate day. It's either. It was always either this race or. Um, the two year old, the English, English banner, which got taken off Moonee Valley. What a show. Ice cools. He had $2, 10 favorite in from $2, 50. Breed them all or bread them all is $5. It's a slight drifter spy wire, $5, 50 point and shoot 650 and way to the stars $13. But there is a speed on speed in this race, as you would expect for the husband handicap.
Speaker 8There is. And it's, it's fitting. I think there's a horse called point and shoot here because Nico, I'm pretty sure Nico did the point. And shoot for ice cool. He was the best bit of the day there at Flemington in the opener. This horses, uh, uh, his best ratings have been over a thousand meters. Every time he stepped past it, he's failed. Uh, he gets so well in, in this race with the way he gets, and there's a bit of pace on. He comes through a rating, uh, their last star where he wasn't his absolute peak, but he's going to run to it on Saturday. And I think he's just perfectly well in with Damien lane aboard. And, uh, I think he'll run a rating that the others can't. Uh, ice cool in the first rate, the best, the first race is the best better the day for me.
Speaker 7Beautiful. Nico, you agree?
Speaker 6I agree. I think, uh, this horse has got an abundance of ability and he still doesn't really have too much of an idea of what he's doing, but he's doing enough to win. And I think he'll win again on Saturday. I think 53 and a half kilos barrier, eight Damien lane. There's some second hand whippersnappers in this race that'll go like school cats.
Speaker 5Some second hand whippersnappers. Let's unpack that a little bit more.
Speaker 6What are the, what do they do? They go hard and they crash. Wow. It's exactly what some of these horses are going to do. Go hard and stop. And he'll sit just behind, smoke the pipe and go whoosh. There you go. The old whippersnappers, the old, uh, this horse will be winning the best bet of the day. The old Benson and Hedges. Um, there could be tears. It's not often you see Damien Lane, um,
Speaker 5get down to 54 kilos. I think he's riding half a kilo over here. This horse has either won his race as well, or he's shut the bed. He's got eight starts for five wins and the times he hasn't won, he sort of spat the dummy a little bit. But a lot of those have been over 1100 or 12. He's unbeaten at the thousand meters. And I think he'll enjoy it. He's just getting a good speed to aim at. So I am keen on him as well. He's, he's always been a horse who's produced some pretty good ratings. And he did that again last start, despite only winning by a narrow margin, but he did beat good enough horses. So he gets in so well at the weights and I'm happy to be with him. So there you go. We're starting Cox Plate Day with an absolute bang. What could possibly go wrong? But you need to send me your races, brother.
Speaker 8All right. Well, um, can we, I'll just do race by race, but I'll do it. Oh, no, no.
Speaker 5Race number two, the red anchor, 1200 meter group three, three-year-olds, Barracks 440, Valeroso fives, Payton $5, Bugsy 550.
Speaker 8Barracks is a horse that is progressing all of the time. He's running two races where it's been, uh, fast early and slow late. I think he's a really well placed to improve. He's been well backed early. He's third up on the quick backup. I think he's the one to find, um, Payton gets J-Mac for the first time. I got too far back. last time around on but uh look in this race i'm going to probably look to back barracks valeroso is another one that won really well in a maiden last time i backed it first up i can't believe it lost but uh barracks is the one that i'm most likely to back in this race a really interesting horse regal harry who's on debut here pretty uh confident placement by clayton douglas looks a nice horse at the trials but yeah as i said barracks is the the one to find for me on the
Speaker 5quick backup he is on the quick backup and that was a quite a fast tempo on saturday at caulfield is there any any dramas with that no i mean i'll trust kiri ma he's doing a couple things right at the moment yeah he is mafiano 40 to 1 one of many results that didn't go the punters way on saturday the mooney valley vase is race number three over the 2040 meters i love how they have kept these races to 2040 even though they are being run at flemington oh it's good true rebel our 2.30 favorite from joely $4.80 it's been a bit of a drifter today so has salan $5.50 hierarchy $9 and written empire has been 15 into 10 for jmac yeah look i think
Speaker 8true rebels very obviously the the one to beat but i think it looks a little bit short um at its current price salan was really good in the thousand guineas last start obviously still a maiden but um obviously there might be some concern getting out to a mile and a quarter but um i think it'll sit a little bit closer and i i think it's probably a little bit too big at its current price joely was really good last up behind um it was a boy it was a super important no sorry it was the edward manifold that's right uh saintly dancer obviously kicked away but it was good behind it and hierarchy's next best but um look i do think hierarchy is probably going to be best over a mile and uh might have to go back from the the awkward barrier so uh a true rebel the obvious um right favorite but i think salan is probably potentially the the bet in that race but um i'm not too keen on on that race in particular beautiful
Speaker 5the other thing that we should mention before we go to our next race is that we do have really hot weather coming up in melbourne this week thursday 30 degrees clear friday 30 degrees and clear however there is a band of rain coming saturday 27 degrees but they've said a 90 chance and we're recording here on a on a wednesday night a 90 chance of three to 20 millimeters of rain so that could land anywhere in between we're thinking we will get some rain on race day but that's a little bit tricky just sort of deciphering what track we're going to be on exactly but hopefully it's um it's not too bad and maybe a soft five soft six at worst race number four is the crockett stakes listed for our three-year-old phillies a real $3.60 in favor was a good winner on debut from cheyenne $3.80 surely flemington down the straight is going to suit her a lot more than around a bend where she was getting too far back angels fury $4.40 cannington $6.50 in jacaranda is $11 uh aroused who
Speaker 8nick coined erect last week uh one it's made and really really nice so it looks like a really nice horse i think it's the one i want to be with um i think it's one that might continue to firm obviously cheyenne carries uh the early two-year-old form that's uh proved to be not particularly very good um and angel fury is another one it looks a bit short at its current price it's always looked like a horse that will um improve from the rating that it's run but it is uh sort of implying that it has so uh i think aroused but on the maiden figure obviously it's a mate it comes out of a maiden but it won it really nicely and um it's it's one that i'm interested in caddington one of maiden at kyneton really really well last 200 meters there was off the charts it's only getting quicker you don't see those very often where it's um actually quickening through the line at the raw sectional splits um yeah look it's a really nice horse but i think aroused is the one to find in that race i think it's going to start a clear favorite what do
Speaker 5you think cheyenne she did run the fastest last 400 in that scarborough stag she got a long way back she did a few things wrong surely she is better set up here yeah that
Speaker 8that race with the scarborough stakes was uh very on pace dominated it was a race that wasn't run particularly fast and the track was racing really fast that day so i i think um one two uh one two three five or something were first four and run in that race and um it was toward the back of the field but you obviously flemington will will help that but i think she does need to improve quite a lot to justify her price as favorite obviously you know it's funny that like you know i'm tipping a horse that's off a maiden but um coming off a maiden doesn't have to you know the the gap between you know that that form between a maiden or a really good maiden winner isn't particularly high and i think morale is one that's going to continue to progress and i think it's a really nice feeling
Speaker 6beautiful
Speaker 7there you go nico anything for you yeah
Speaker 6i really like aroused i think uh should be awfully happy to have a good bet on her and i'll uh i'll save on shawian sweet
Speaker 5let's move on to race five and i think this is a race where i will be getting involved in it is the mckeown stakes group two to be run down the straight um some fun facts about this race the mckeown stakes used to be the main lead up for the moya stakes and it used to be run over a thousand meters much much earlier in the campaign uh in the spring i should say but the mooney valley racing club we did move our program around and i say we because i did used to work there um so pretty much revolve around the everest so they got a better manicato field so this race was put onto cox plate day they the car line stakes is now the only main lead up to the moya and that whole sprinting program got moved forward so if you're wondering why this is a wait for age group two on cox plate day that you don't remember in the past it is because it wasn't there previously and the distance has changed extra galactic our 2.60 favorite from jigsaw three dollars smooth chino six dollars fifty in from seven dollars gee you probably should have beat skybird if uh galati party wrote it out but it probably wasn't really his fault ray magnerio eight dollars fifty in mazu is eleven dollars nicole let you go first well i think extra
Speaker 6galactic is the horse that will win this race i think she has the most upside i think jigsaw has been winning his races around a bend and kicking off that bend he won't have that here and i think she's just primed ready to go i think she'll love the straight james mcdonald sticks and i think it's a great a great setup for her to to go on to to better races um this is not a group one she deserves one um but who knows maybe the group one ambition down the straights going to be a little bit harder now with a few horses going to the champion sprint but she's a very very good horse and um i don't think anyone needs you know there's no no denying that everyone knows that she's a good horse so uh yeah that's um she deserves to win and hopefully that's
Speaker 5yep she is a very good man there's no there's no denying that and she's um she's almost surprised me a little bit this preparation i wasn't sure about that sort of south australian form but she she's proven that she is well up to group one standard here in australia or even sort of just that rung below that the elite horses especially in sydney but i'm still going to back jigsaw look i know his straight track flemington form on what we've seen so far isn't great but i don't think he was in this form it's a different life i don't yeah i don't think he was in this form when he was going down the straight previously in some of those races i think he stretched out to 1400 maybe even a mile yeah
Speaker 8edward manifold was his last run at flemington yeah which is over a mile
Speaker 5a mile and he's not a miler he's a he's a very very fast sprinter he's found a new lease on life his ratings right now are just that little bit ahead of extra galactic look she might be the one who's better suited by the straight she might be the one with the better turn of foot who who just camps behind him and goes past him however we we're yet to see her down the straight yet either so there's no there's no um hard on evidence that that she will be more suited to the straight than him smooth chino deserves to be the third favorite but i just think mazu and jigsaw are going to go forward they're going to control the tempo here and i think jigsaw is just going to be too good again and go nine in a row is it bot
Speaker 8nine yeah he's actually funny he's making his third ever start down the straight the last time he ran down the straight was in the gil guy three years ago uh in october i star patrol beat him and triple missile was second and then before that ran it was back in 2021 where ranch hand uh won the race in the poseidon stakes and ingratiating was second obviously ran in the paris lane and the and the uh the chester manifold um but yeah look i think he's um i think he should be favorite uh in this race i think that he's got the right you know he's run better figures and what extra galactic has and i think extra galactic is improving we can see that in her ratings she's on an upward trajectory but i think jigsaw is going to be forward and control the race and um i just think you should be favored and that's not to say he should be a bet i think he's about the right price but um yeah look i i think jigsaw is the the right favorite in the race and i if he if he starts 350 i'd be very interested in backing you beautiful i
Speaker 5don't know if we're quite going to get that price but boy he's three three dollars three dollars ten yeah with our friends three dollars with our friends i don't think three dollars ten is actually a real price with our friends nico i think it goes straight from three to three dollars three dollars three dollars three dollars three dollars three dollars
Speaker 6$3.20. Yeah, I think it is. Yeah. Not a real price.
Speaker 5All right. Race number six is the Keota Stud Mile, which is a group to race set weights and penalties. This is the Crystal Mile, if you're wondering what the registered name is. And yet again, it is a race that has changed a little bit in recent years. It was run under wait-for-age conditions for many years, but the Moonee Valley Racing Club, we were sick of getting such small fields, five-horse fields, six-horse fields. So we changed to set weights and penalties to get a bigger field, and that's exactly what they've got here. Surf and Bird, $2.70, and favorite from Buckaroo, $7.50. Evaporate, $8.50. He also is accepted in Sydney. They could be heading that way. I'm not 100% sure just yet. Another wheel is $9.00. Von Hawke, $15.00, who won this race last year, I believe.
Speaker 8One of the last two years.
Speaker 5He's one of the last two years.
Speaker 8There you go. Or maybe he was second the year before. He might have been second the year before.
Speaker 5It doesn't ring a bell these months twice. On display is $15.00. Who do you like here?
Speaker 8Look, this race is really tricky because I think Surf and Bird's the right favorite, but much too short. She's the box ticker. She's actually unbeaten over further than 1,400 meters. She's beaten at 14, but over further. She's unbeaten at the ball. Yeah, unbeaten at the mile. But she's just very short. This is a good collection of horses, obviously, that might be a little bit maligned. They're not going to run to their peak. But I think if some of them do run to their peak, I think they can knock her off. She's a horse that's improving. Obviously, over the mile, she's best, but she seems quite vulnerable as a $2.70 shot, would you say, with our Bet365 friends? It's a disgusting price, isn't it? Yeah, it's way too short. Look, I'd love to back Buckaroo just because it's funky. James McDonald rides. I thought he was excellent first up in the Mems. He was fine in the Underwood and then was just beaten on a really rain-affected track in testing conditions in the Turnbull last start. Back to a mile. He's shown that he's adept over a mile, and he's a fair price. He was second in the Cox Plate last year, and if he's here in one piece and can run to something like his best form, I think he's very capable of knocking this field off. For Roche, he's the other one that I thought was a little bit interesting. Obviously, he posted wide last start in the Tourac and might be able to show a bit of speed here and get into a better position. It's a horse that thrives on. On good speed, and especially at over a mile, it's a really nice horse. I think the price undersells how good for Roche he is. Obviously, he won the Australian Guineas at this track in course and distance.
Speaker 5He did, too. Another bot is a horse that he's growing me up, another Will. He was excellent two starts back in the Maccabi Diva, ran a rating of over 100 here, track and trip, and then last start, he was pretty bad in that Prodigy race, which didn't rate good at all.
Speaker 8Yeah, I think I've got a handle on another Will, and I could be completely wrong, but I think that he runs really well in races that there's not much pressure in, because obviously, there's a reason why he had quite a time away from racing, and he might not be able to go through the pain barrier like he quite used to in races that are slowly run, and he's up on pace, and he can sprint where he doesn't have to quite go through the pain barrier, but we've seen in races where the pace is good, and he's actually being tested. He can't quite do it anymore, so maybe, obviously, I think there's going to be a little bit of pace in this race, and he might not be one to go through the pain barrier like the others can. There you go. Nico, do you have any thoughts on the Crystal Mile this year?
Speaker 6No thoughts for me.
Speaker 5It is the first leg of the quaddie, being only a nine-race card this year. This card has lost the JRA Cup. It's lost the English Banner to Flamington, and I think one other race might have been the Phillies Classic. It's not on this card this year, but they've put it on another date. So that is races one to six, and obviously, with Bet365 this week, they'll be doing their stake back off in races one, two, and three at Flamington. If you miss the winner, you'll get a bonus bet back. Make sure you do opt-in and activate that one, and they'll be doing the 25% winnings plus boost on races four to six, and they'll also be doing Randwick one to six, I believe. Second leg of the quaddie is the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. Time-honoured. 2,500 metres, set weights and penalties, and I say time-honoured because the Cox Plate is actually not the oldest race of the Moonee Valley Racing Club. It is actually the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. It is very, very old. I think it's about 160 years old or something. So they've been running this for a very, very long time. Almost as old as you've been. Yeah, not quite. I'll tell you what. After Sunday in Sydney, I felt all of 160 years old.
Speaker 6Yeah. There we go.
Speaker 5Juju Keebo, our $6 equal favourite with Pinhole and Atherwolf. So three sharing that first line of betting. Do note that we have had an early scratching here. So you are, who was a good winner of the St. Ledger on the weekend, has come out. So they're probably thinking they're chancing their arm at getting a Melbourne Cup start rather than coming here to get his rating up. They must think that he has a good chance of getting. King Pedro, $6.50 from Point of Law, $8.50. He won the Geelong Cup today. Very, very impressive winner. He will not be running here. I wouldn't have thought. Kizilar is $8.50. I don't know how you say that, Joseph O'Brien, runner's name, but it's been well supported. Mr. Monaco, $11. The Euphrates is $13. He won't be running here. I don't think he ran today. And Kings Valley, $13 as well. So, but this is a race where the complexion of it and also the market could change a fair bit before Saturday.
Speaker 8Yeah. Look, look, a few runners at the top of the market won't be running in this race. So it's a. It's a watch and see sort of race. But I do think there's a bet. And I think it's out the wolf. I think they went too slow. I think last start for him. And I think he can roll forward from the outside drawer. And yeah, I really like I've marked him $5 and, you know, I have a good, you know, in my market now, I have a good opinion of the Euphrates and Point of Law in this race. So they'll come out and put a little bit more percentage in into out the wolf. And I think, yeah, I think he's the bet in the race. I think pinhole, he won really well in the Herbert Power. And I know, I do. I know I do say, I think he's one of us. Australia's best hopes of winning the Melbourne Cup. I'm obviously now Point of Law probably is, you know, international, but now trained by Kieran Maher. But I do think he's a bit short in this race. Juju Kibo probably goes back from the drawer. I don't know what they do with him. He's a horse that can show speed, but potentially he's going to be restrained to the root of the field. Look, I think out the wolf is the one to beat in this race. And I marked him $5 and obviously that price will shorten with the scratchings. But I think. I think, um, he's, he's a runner. You can back early. I think I really like out the wolf in this race.
Speaker 5I think he's probably the best horse in the race. I know Juju Kibo was pretty good for him last start, but there's things probably didn't quite work out for him. Hopefully. Are you thinking they roll forward from that? I think so.
Speaker 8I think they have to.
Speaker 5If they do, then he will have a big advantage on Juju Kibo. And I think a good chance to turn the tables. He's clearly one of the horses to beat, but I thought King Pedro's first up run was fantastic in the hill stakes. He finished off. Um, not too dissimilar to the winner in attrition and, um, getting up to the 2400 meters. I know he's only second up here, but he only had a slight lead up between that busy campaign last time around. And I just think he, he gets all map favors from barrier to again, if he, if he can just begin well with Damien Lane going on board, who's a massive booking for him. So I could have something on Athol Wolf, but King Pedro is a horse I've got a lot of respect for, and he's potentially on top for me in this race, Nicka.
Speaker 6It's a great edition of the race. Um, it's a very hard race to dissect. I don't have a firm opinion in the race at the moment. There's too many horses I can back. Um, yeah, so I haven't left it. It's going to be hard enough to try and work out what horses are going to the quality, let alone trying to pick it on top selection in the race.
Speaker 5It's a good quality leg. It's definitely a good quality leg.
Speaker 6It's a great quality leg if you get it.
Speaker 5Like I feel with these races, I'm like, there's a good chance. And I'm going to back the winner at $7 or there's a good chance where I could have something in the quality at $26 and that's my.
Speaker 6Yeah, but the race is going to have so many scratchings like Omni-Man, that's out, Euphrates out.
Speaker 5Nicka, you sound worse than me, and I know I've had a big weekend in Sydney, you sound like absolute shit.
Speaker 6Yes, this is Ben, this is literally my life. Like I've got the worst hay fever of anyone that you would ever meet, an actual hay fever.
Speaker 5Oh, geez. There you go.
Speaker 6Look at me.
Speaker 5I'm fucked. You look like shit and sound like shit.
Speaker 6Yeah, but I still just soldier up and just turn up for you guys. There you go. There you go. And the punters out there that love listening to my dribble.
Speaker 5These eyes are watering up in the studio here. I'm on Struggle Street. I was losing my voice yesterday a little bit. I had to chuck out the Alibaba. I had to say goodbye, man. You and me, we've had a good weekend, but I need my voice. Oh, geez. Race number eight. Race number eight is the Cox Plate. Of course it is. It is Australia's great, wait for it, Australia's best race, I would say. And it is run over 2,040 meters. Group one. And there's been a bit doing in this market today. Sir Delius is our current $4.40 favorite from Aliana, $4.60. War woven, $4.80. He did touch favorite for a little bit. There was quite a bit of money that went on him at around midday today. Cosmic Crusader backing up from the Caulfield Cup. That's so good. $7.50. And Chairwolf backing up from the King Charles $8. Big, big hat tip to these trainers for backing these horses up in a race like this. I think if you don't have Cosmic Crusader, you don't have Chairwolf, this race all of a sudden isn't quite looking as good. Birdman 12s, Blind Rays 15, and St. George is 23. Look, the big thing with the Cox Platebot, one of the big things is on the Tuesday, the barrier draw is unlike any other race in Australia. The connections get chosen at random to come up to the stage and they get to pick their own barriers and Land Legend, their connections came up first and they went, bang, we want barrier 12 of 12.
Speaker 8That was awesome. And it's the right barrier. It is the perfect option for them because he is a horse obviously that needs to get rolling. Yeah, they'll roll forward and drawn directly inside him for the same stable is Light Infantry Man, who's going to do the exact same thing, build and roll across and set a really fast
Speaker 5tempo. Yeah, we would be absolutely shocked if this wasn't fast run. That barrier draw. There were two interesting selections, both wallahorses. There was barrier one and barrier five available when the connections of Birdman went up. I thought they were going to choose five.
Speaker 8Everyone probably did.
Speaker 5They chose one, which I was thinking, well, if you're a little bit slow away, like I know that the field's going to be strong out. I was just surprised they drew one for him. It left five open for Sir Delius, which is just the most perfect gate for him ever. And then there was nine and 10 and 11 available. When Aliana went up, connections of Aliana, and they didn't choose nine, they chose 10.
Speaker 8Yeah. I mean, I sort of, in a weird way, I get why they chose one for Birdman. Like I'm putting myself in their shoes and I think, I think what they think is he's vulnerable in a really fast, uh, 2000 meters.
Speaker 5So just save all the ground.
Speaker 8I think that's, I think that's what they were thinking. Yeah. Um, I sort of disagree with that though. You know, I think, I think what you're going to hear throughout the week is Birdman. Birdman is, is really vulnerable in these really fast 2000 meter races. And I think, I think there's probably some truth to it, but like I go back and look at the, um, the Underwood and that race wasn't slow at all. They went quite fast there. It wasn't slow. I mean, it wasn't breakneck speed, but it wasn't slow by any means.
Speaker 5Um, I think it just needs a well-timed ride. Like the one that J-Mac gave him when he won the Durman cup, I believe it was. Yeah. That was, that was pride of Jenny in that. Yeah. I don't know if it was as fast as like say the Australian cup.
Speaker 8No, but I, I just think, um, I think, I think what the, the, the really fast pace angle with Birdman might be a little bit overplayed and, you know, you look at his price now with our friends at Bet365, was it $13, $14 or something like that? Look, yeah. I mean, he's, he's one of the runners I'll be backing in the race. I'll go, I guess I'll state my case, but Birdman is, is one of the ones I'll be backing. Look, I think he's good enough to win a typical Cox plate, but that Underwood win was, was really, really good belted cosmic crusader. And he came out and won the Turnbull stakes, uh, the next. Obviously it was disappointing in the, in the Corfo stakes, but he, he wasn't the only one there. And I think there's a case to be made that, you know, Chris Waller is a, is if not one of the best, if not the best, the, uh, of conditioner of horses. And yeah, there's every chance that he laid off him, um, that last start because he knew he had him, had him primed for the Cox plate. And, um, you know, he, he had that down run third up and he's going to be absolutely ready to be there fourth up in the Cox plate. And, um. Yeah, look, I think he's a little bit big. I think he's more than capable of winning a typical Cox plate. And I think this, this is a typical Cox plate, even though there's, there's six of them, six or seven of them that could realistically win it in any given year. Um, I think he's, he's won and I think he's undersold at the odds. I think the right favorite is Sir Delius. I think, um, you know, you look at his profile third up, he spikes, you know, first up, second up, and there might be some discussion that he's, he's not going quite as well this year, but you look back in his prior to preparations in Australia, he was, um. Um, you know, I'm not gonna go through every run, but he was, he was pretty much similar to where he's been this campaign. It's just in different sort of, uh, scenarios, like he might've been running on, but he's pretty much run the same two numbers and he gets third up and he just spikes and he hits that number. And I think, you know, people look at that last run where he was well beaten and it might've been, it might've looked like a really suitable scenario, but. It was a really fast testing race on, on, in testing conditions, and he might've just been ready for that. And I think he's going to be there. I think he's going to be there.
Speaker 6when they could meet Autumn Glow. I think he will be up in this race to his neck. So they're the three horses that I think are the winning chances. I think the three-year-olds will go pop. Albeit, I think Blind Rays is a better winning chance than War Woven. I think I'll still die on the hill that Blind Rays was a bigger run last start than War Woven. Cosmic Crusader, I'm happy to put at Pensarim. I think it's an afterthought. You can't go through many dogfights, and he's well into a preparation now. Yeah, and Birdman, I think he's a question in a strong 2000.
Speaker 5Have they got this all wrong? Opinion, have they got this all wrong with Cosmic Crusader? I know it's easy to say after the fact. He ran really well in the Caulfield Cup, but he didn't win. If he was mine, I would have gone straight to a Cox fight. In the Turnbull, he's just smacked up two of his biggest rivals, Eliana and Sir Delius. I would have gone straight to a Cox fight. Have they pulled the wrong rein?
Speaker 8No, I don't think so. Worth having a crack, definitely. Why not? If he won the Caulfield Cup, you'd be.
Speaker 6You're speaking to someone who thinks they should race every second day.
Speaker 5It's commendable. It's commendable running in all these races. It's what Bob does. I'm not even just saying this in hindsight. I'm saying, I said this after the Turnbull, that I was surprised that they were going to go to the Caulfield Cup after winning a Turnbull so dominantly.
Speaker 8Yeah, I just think, why not have a crack? That's what they're doing. I mean, if you're running in both races, you're off one, you know.
Speaker 5You might, but it might have hurt his chances running last week.
Speaker 8Maybe. It might enhance his chances.
Speaker 6Maybe. I doubt it. Could also gut him for future preparations. He can't just keep going to the dog fight.
Speaker 5It is the Cox fight. It is Australia's best wait for age race. We want a trifecta in order. For me, I'm Sir Delius, Eliana, Cheyenne Wolfe.
Speaker 6Sir Delius, Cheyenne Wolfe, Eliana.
Speaker 8Sir Delius, Eliana, Woven. There you go.
Speaker 5You beauty. Hopefully, we only need those four in the quaddie then. Race number nine is the Tezio over 2,040 meters, and Soverato is our $5.50 favorite. Down on 54 kilos for Waller. It's been well backed in from seven. From two down to screed, $7.50 the top weight. Perfect 10, also $7.50. Panova's been 12 into nine, and Chocolates has been 12 into 10. My best each way better the day comes up here in two down to screed. Look, she's got to carry the 60 kilos here, no mean feet, but she's unbeaten, three out of three, when she's got to the 2,000 meters. I thought her run in the Tourac was excellent. She was finishing off fast in good sectionals for the step-up in-trip to the 2,000 meters here, and the last time we saw her 2,000 meters at Flemington, she beat a horse named Land Legend, who has obviously won the might and power, and who's going around in a Cox Plate. So from barrier 10, I think Declan Bates will roll forward, get a nice enough position on the map. Mid-field at worst with a little bit of cover, and I just think $8 is just too big a price here, Bot.
Speaker 8Yeah, backing two horses, two down to screed, completely agree. She's been looking for 2,000 meters for a while now. Her peak is over 2,000 meters. She's a 2,000-meter horse. I've been saying she's the matriarch horse for forever. Here she is in the Tezio, similar race, course and distance, maybe an extra 40 meters, but that won't hurt her. Silverado's the other one, third up. She was excellent from the rear of the field. Taken back from a wide barrier last time, I started at Randwick, and now we'll be able to settle a lot closer. It looks like it's improved as a four-year-old, and yeah, I'm going to back those two for a good result, and yeah, I really like those two. I think they should be shorter than what they are.
Speaker 5Beautiful. I was looking at Ben Iscari's tips. A judge I do have great respect for, and he's really keen on that double bet play as well. Nico, anything? No, nothing for me. All right. A summary of best bets just quickly, Bot, while I load up Randwick for you.
Speaker 8I really like Ice Cool in the first race. I've marked it about $2.10. I think it's really well in under the weights, and its best runs have been over 1,000 metres. I think it's, yeah, really well in, and I think it'll continue to shorten and start a clear favourite. And what else? I'm backing Sidelius and Birdman in the Cox Plate. Really like the double Silverado and two down to Screet near Tezio, and I don't know. There's a couple other ones, but you've been listening.
Speaker 6And Nico? Race one, Ice Cool. Race four, backing Arouz, saving Cheyenne. Race five, Extra Galactic. And then, obviously, Sidelius with Cheyenne Wolf in the Cox Plate.
Speaker 5And for me, I'm race one, Ice Cool. I am race number five, Jigsaw. Race number seven, I'm Atherwolf and King Pedro, potentially. Race number eight, Sidelius, my main bet. Aliana, just a smaller result. And race nine, my best value of the day is the top weight in two down to Screet. I think I'm buying my own at Randwick, Nico. You're not keen to get.
Speaker 6Oh, yeah, I'm backing.
Speaker 5Lindemann. Oh, just Lindemann? Yeah. I've got a couple bets. The first of those we're going to start in is race number six, and it is the Craven Plate. 1,800 metres, and this race is run under weight-free conditions. Lindemann, $2.40 from Tom Kitten, $3.20. We've then got Alias, $7.50. Plymouth, $7.50. And Vivier has been 10 into nine. This is the best bet of the entire day, I think, Lindemann. I think Nashua Willer, look, he's a jockey. He gets things so right so often, but I just don't think he got it quite right in the hill stakes. I think he went a little bit too slow. He allowed those horses behind him to be close enough to him who have very good turn of foot. One of those was a Trishan who always peaks fourth up. And I just think he went. He didn't use the horse's absolute A1 strengths, and you can tell from the margin spread that he might not have gone fast enough because there was only two and a half lengths separating second to sixth in that run. I think he is going to. He's going to take up the lead here. Alias is going to sit second, and he just needs to gradually increase the tempo as he has done in previous times. And if Lindemann can improve on his rating last start, which was 99.3, which is well down on what he usually performs around Rose Hill and Randwick at this sort of distance range once he's fit, I just think he's going to be much too tough to run down. So Tom Kitten, he's probably some danger. He's going well enough, but Lindemann's $2.40. I think I couldn't get him above even money.
Speaker 6Yeah, I agree. I think Lindemann's a cracking bet, and I think he'll win. Nash to redeem himself after last time.
Speaker 5Beautiful. Race number seven is the Spring Champion Stakes. Why the hell is it on Cox Plate Day? You might have to ask PVL that. It's a group on for the three-year-olds. Look, there's probably only one or two that would be even considered for a Cox Plate this year in a race like this. Maybe there's none. However, there has been some years where a race like this is going to steal a really good three-year-old away from the Cox Plate, and that is annoying. Global Gold, $2.90 in favour. She was really good winning the flight stakes from Proxima Dea is $6. Won that bunch finish to remain unbeaten. $6. Scarole, $7. Stormy Marco, $7.50. And Cormier is $9. As mentioned, there just wasn't much at all between some of those two. One of those horses last time around, that was in the gloaming stakes over 1,800 metres. I think only half a length separated first to fifth over the line. And I think there's a clear bet here, and it is Global Gold who brings the different form lines. She was too good for the fillies in that flight stakes, and she just looks like she's got Steyr written all over for her, all over. And every year, John Sargent has a progressive filly who gets to 2,000 metres, who gets to the oaks, and this looks like the one this year. She was fortunate to get the good tempo to aim at last time around. Tommy Berry set a decent enough clip on Queen's Gamble out in front. Look, it was still weak, but at least the margin spread allowed her to really build up her revs into the race. And I just think her getting to the 2,000 metres, she's going to improve out of sight. So Global Gold is a bet. I think she's probably a touch skin at $2.90. I'd love a bit better than that. And a futures bet that I've had on for some time is Steyr. Stormy Marco, who was fifth last start somehow, even though he was only beaten half a length. And he's another one that I think will really improve up to the 2,000. Any thoughts, Nico? No, no opinion from me.
Speaker 8I think Cormier and Stormy Marco are my two derby. I hope more than anything that they'd back up in the derby because I think those two have been the derby horses for me for so, so long. And if they're not there on derby day, I will be very upset. Also, Mind Games is one that I've had an eye on for a while. It's had no luck last start. At Newcastle, one really well first up. It's only had the three starts, been heavily supported in early markets. I think out of anything in this race, I think it's most likely to back up into the derby and I give it a huge chance. But I really hope that Cormier and Stormy Marco back up in the derby, particularly Cormier. I think he's desperate for a mile and a half.
Speaker 5Beautiful. There you go. They don't do it often, do they?
Speaker 8I know. And the connections, Paul Massara and Leah Gavran, I mean, Paul Massara, namely, he seems like a conservative sort of bloke. So I hope they back up, but I don't think they will. But I really do hope they do.
Speaker 5Race number eight is the invitation. You've got to be invited. The Phillies and Mayors, 1400 metre group to Lazura. $3.40 for our favourite, yeah? Gee, it's not a bad price for the class runner in the race. From Gerringong, $4.20. the $4, she was really, really tough winning on Caulfield Cup Day. Three wide, no cover of the journey. Verona Rose is $7.50. Idle Flyer, $8.00. Can she find some of her better form? And Perfumist is $8.50. Look, I think with Perfumist here and maybe Asgarda, there's going to be a little bit of speed. And I think Lazura can just go back, find maybe a midfield position, hopefully get one off the fence. If she's in that three wide running line, that should be fine. And I just think $3.40 is a very, very backable price for what is clearly the best horse in the race. This is a horse who went around odds on last start. The money for this horse in that Golden Pendant was just completely off the map. I think she was north of $2 into $1.80, $1.70 at the jump. Might have even got shorter at one stage. And she killed them. She was too good for Verona Rose, who she meets again here. Her Randwick form is decent. Her Rose Hill form is even better. And I just think $3.40 is a really good price. And Gerringong, as tough and as brave as she was this last start, she's got to improve a little bit to come up to Lazura's level. Any other thoughts here, lads? No. No. It's the 1AWA.
Speaker 7Jesus, you are gone. This is like, I don't want, jeez. Do you want to send me home? I do. You sound terrible. I feel horrible. You need to blow your nose out. Oh, it's not even that. Throw tissues at him. It's not even that.
Speaker 5What is your bet in WA? Basset Hound will just win again. Is it staying at $1,000 or $11,000?
Speaker 6Yeah, staying at $1,000. It doesn't matter. We'll just win again.
Speaker 5What race is it? Seven. Beautiful. Race seven? Yeah. Or is it? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Race number seven. No odds yet with our friends at Beth365. And there's also, Beatty's also going around as well. First up in race number nine, and that's in the Belgravia. Yeah. All right. We're going not too bad for time. It is podcast multi-time. Given Nico's voice is absolutely cast.
Speaker 6You can say it, Bob.
Speaker 5But I'll let you go with our first leg in the podcast multi.
Speaker 8Yeah, I really like Ice Cool. I think it's really well in under the weights. And every time it's been over 1,000 meters, it's run really, really well. Every time it's stepped past 1,000 meters, it's failed. This is a perfect opportunity down the Flemington Strait. Good enough speed for it to sit behind. And I think it'll start closer to even money than the current price now. So Ice Cool, the best bet of the day for me at Flemington.
Speaker 5And the best bet of the day for me comes up at Randwick in race number six in the Craven Plate. I think Lindemann is just an outstanding price to bounce back here. Look, I think Nash got it a little bit wrong last time in the hill stakes. He just went a little bit too slow in front. I think here he can just really increase the tempo, stretch the field out, put a few lengths on Tom Kitten around the corner. And I think he'll be a little bit too good. He started odds on last time around. And we're getting a really, really backable price to go again. He was beaten but far from disgrace last time. And the fact that there was only two lengths between sort of second and sixth would suggest that the lead speed. And the compressed margins, they were just too, too slow. Let's get on to some listener questions. And the first is from Steven Power, racing blogger of all people. My man. Can you ask Nick what he'd prefer? A winning multi at the Cox Plate or a night out with Blogsy? No betting. I'll tell you what, you're not well enough equipped for a night out right now.
Speaker 6Oh, fuck off. I could back to something. I would want a night out with Blogsy before any winning multi. There you go. I've been lucky enough to have the privilege of both. They'll take a night with Blogsy over anything.
Speaker 5Victor Alcaraz, why 2,040 metres and not 2,000 metres in Flemington? Because Cox Plate, bruh. It's just a traditional Cox Plate distance that they wanted to keep, obviously. Krista Castor, best to worst, where would you prefer to see carrying rising next overseas start? The Alcoys in Dubai? No. The QE2 at Royal Ascot? I don't know how to say that. The Taka Masuka Kinnan at Japan? I don't know how to actually say that, so I apologise. The sprint race in Japan or just win the Everest again?
Speaker 8Just win the Everest again, I don't know. I mean, I don't care. I mean, maybe go to Japan and just belt them because that'd be fun.
Speaker 5I mean, if I had to choose where I'd want to see carrying rising win next start overseas, it would be at Royal Ascot. It would be amazing to see him just shut up the. The Poms over there. I don't think it's going to happen, though. I'd rather him shut up the Japanese.
Speaker 8Well, not the Japanese, the other one, the coat, tail hanger on honourers of the Japanese.
Speaker 6That's rich. Yeah, I know.
Speaker 5He clearly loves rock hard ground, so going to Japan or even Dubai probably makes sense.
Speaker 8Yeah, it'd be fun.
Speaker 5Brayden Dixon, hey boys, thoughts on the. Thoughts on. With the Cox Plate at Flemington, what will happen with the track? Rail position, potential rain next week, not looking hopeful later in the carnival with the additional meeting. I mean, Flemington is just such a good track that I think it'll handle it. Yeah, it'll be fun. But if we do have a lot of rain on Saturday, by the time we get to Champions Day, it might be a severely worn track. So I think it's a good point. And that is actually the other reason why there's only. There's only nine races at Flemington this Saturday rather than what there usually is 10 at Flemington because they're just trying to preserve that track a little bit. So they've told Mini Valley only a nine race card. Trackside Trav, okay boys, question for the podcast. What horse, event or race is number one on the bucket list outside of Australia?
Speaker 8I'd love to go to Royal Ascot. That'd be fun. Yeah, probably Royal Ascot. Or actually, no, Cheltenham. Yeah, the Cheltenham Festival.
Speaker 5Royal Ascot is probably number one on my list that I haven't been to. Hong Kong International Day and that whole week is just something you just have to tick off and you have to go to the Jockey Challenge, International Jockey Challenge at Happy Valley on a Wednesday night. That is just an amazing week. And I just got lucky that I got to see Golden 60, Romantic Warrior and Lucky Swain all win on the same day. Kentucky Derby, probably the other one that comes to mind. You don't care?
Speaker 6It doesn't do much for me. I'd like to go see a good jumps meeting overseas. Cheltenham. Maybe Cheltenham. You've got to go to Cheltenham at some stage. Maybe Aintree. Yeah.
Speaker 5One of them. Yeah. But maybe even Japan Cup at some stage. But Hong Kong, you've just got to get there at some stage. It's so good. Matthew Rose, Mug Punter. The Mug Punter is telling you War Woven is immoral. Oh, hello. There you go. He's got a very close association with the Bjorn Baker stable. Rowan Greger, has everyone recovered from Kaling Rising? Is the Rising Street coming to an end? No, we haven't. We have not at all. Mr. Always Right. Two dimes, great fellas. Tell me how she loses. The weight won't stop her. Fourth up, 2,000 metres at Flemington is a wet dream. $9 bet up. Oh, we agree. Hope so. We do agree. So, fingers absolutely crossed there. Lee, Hong Kong Racing Model. Question for the podcast. Attrition ran fourth in last year's Cox Plate and Mitch Friedman says he's going even better now. Yet, he's $51. Biggest overs in the field? Or is the market right to leave him out? And our mate, Brett Norton, who owns a share in Attrition says, formalness will tell you he's hard to catch because he builds into his prep. But when the stakes are high, the boss has him ready. 11 starts in $1 million plus races for eight top four finishes. Now, that is a great start for Attrition. A high pressure Cox Plate should suit him perfectly. Hashtag extremely biased listener. That's a fantastic start.
Speaker 6Hopefully, he runs well for better of the team.
Speaker 5I'd love nothing more than for Attrition to, to run really well again. If he won the Cox Plate, it would knock my socks off. I'll be honest, but I'll tell you what, he's been a bloody ripper horse for Brett and co. He's won two hill stakes. He's won a tour act. He's been a ripper. And he's defined the odds on many occasions. Going down the page, Bailey Green is sweet Caroline, the new Hell's Bells.
Speaker 6That's a good comment. Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 5Nah, come on. We've had, we've had some, some good Everest where it's been sweet Caroline into a good result. And we've got it so far.
Speaker 8Like the, I mean, like, oh, that just looks awesome. Yeah. You get the old people on like the miserable people on Twitter, just saying, look at these looks so cringe and like, oh, come on guys. It looks like the best thing ever.
Speaker 5Mate. It's so good being there.
Speaker 8Yeah. It's like bunch of 20 to 28, 20, like, you know, 30 year olds, just belting out sweet Caroline. Like it's what racing needs. It is, it is, it is the best race. The only thing you need to do now is just convince these people to come every Saturday. And then, and then you've in the sports fine.
Speaker 5But the Everest day is clear. Like it's not even, it's, it's, it's the, it's the number one race day in Sydney. And I put it out.
Speaker 6It's the best phrase daily.
Speaker 5It's so good. And I put out a tweet saying Renwick is my favorite race course to, to attend. And I'm not, I'm not saying, I'm not saying Renwick is a better race course in Flemington. I'm not saying the surface is better. I'm just saying my personal view, I love going to Ram week. more than even Flemington, but just because Some of the views that you can watch the races from that old member stand and see the whole straight, you're so much closer to the action than, say, a Flemington. And I just love that it's not too big and not too small. Yeah, I agree. And there's just so many different, like, good joints that you can sit and have a beer at. Rosa, when is the stride length data making a return? Surely it gets run in the Groupon races. What? Any stride length stuff to say in the Cox Plate about horses?
Speaker 8Oh, I guess I think Warwoven or Stay Mile and a Quarter is no issue.
Speaker 5Tell you what, I'm not striding very well right now. Mate, you are absolutely fucking cast. Price tag punts best at Moorfield. Thanks, lads. Sorry, mate, we haven't done the Moorfield form. Bailey, Jigsaw, Winterbottom likelihood?
Speaker 8Yep. I think that's the plan, isn't it?
Speaker 5Yeah, it'll go there. I think that is the plan. There was some talk of Hong Kong. I don't even know if he's still nominated for that, but I think he's going Winterbottom. Connor, last week you said you had a feeling it was going to be a big race. It was a punter's weekend. It was a strip out. Benny, can you please say this weekend is going to be shit or something? Well, to be fair, Connor, I have said I'm not looking forward to this weekend, and I haven't said anything about it being a punter's weekend, so hopefully there is a bit of reverse psychology there, mate. Yeah, unfortunately, there was some horses last week that underperformed that we thought were going to run better, but at the end of the day, another stride with Kane rising, and it certainly would have changed my. Not only my day, it would have changed my whole spring. Um, I had him going for a large collect, so I'm feeling the pain like everyone. Uh, boys, was Kane rising's loss the biggest slash most devastating loss of your punting careers? If not, what was? Oh, not, I didn't, I didn't back it. It wasn't for you, but, well. Frigila hurt. Yeah, it did after telling everyone I was an odds on chance.
Speaker 8Yeah. Well, I mean, yeah.
Speaker 5Yeah, whatever. Hey, you win some.
Speaker 8You lose more.
Speaker 5You lose more. That carry hurt. Was that the number one?
Speaker 6Fucking ice pen. I reckon one.
Speaker 5No, no. What a fucking dumb question. The number one ever, though.
Speaker 7Oh, no. I reckon Nature Strip. Nature Strip's probably your number one ever.
Speaker 6Yeah, just pick which Nature Strip one you want to go. One, two, three, or four. For me, like. There's been four Nature Strips.
Speaker 5I reckon Nature. Nature Strips. I reckon Nature Strip hurt me more as well, because I was in a position here where I could save a little bit, but.
Speaker 6He was my favorite ever horseman, and I saw him four times live, had him going for substantial collects four times, and he never won.
Speaker 5Yeah. Nah, my worst one, my worst two, both Romantic Warrior, the two overseas. The two overseas where he just got nutted in the Dubai turf by that Japanese horse. What was the name, Bot? Don't know. And then when he got beaten by Forever Young on the dirt, where he kicked for home and looked like he was home.
Speaker 6Got beat by fucking Soul Rush.
Speaker 5Yeah, he got beat by Soul Rush. That was the one in the Dubai turf, and then he got beat by Forever Young as well. Yeah. And both starts, he looked like he was home.
Speaker 6You've got, you can have a pick. You can have Nature Strip four times, you can have K-Rising, and you can have Noonday Gun. Take your pick. Yeah. Shove the knife at me. There's a load of gun. Noonday Gun. Yeah. Well named. Yeah.
Speaker 5Those Romantic Warrior ones hurt even more because I either stayed up late to watch them or I woke up in the middle of the night to get up and then like was served that. And just, I was, I just couldn't go back to sleep. At least on the weekend, I had money on Tempted thinking I was about to get $16 on the tote because that's what the price was before it jumped. So when she crossed the line, it wasn't, it was, it was like, damn, like K-Rising hasn't won, but at least, at least I've had like 300 bucks on it. At $16 and I've got five grand back. Yeah. And then the $8 flashes up on the tote board and it's just like, are you bloody serious? Anyway. Uh, Apache bro. What is the most annoying noise in racing media? Uncle Wayne clearing his throat.
Speaker 8Excuse me. Right next to me.
Speaker 5A hundred times a show or Nico clearing his nose a hundred times a show.
Speaker 6Definitely me. Yeah.
Speaker 5You, yeah. You're pretty bad right now. Teddy Brooks. How much percent of Kingswood? Does. Does bot have.
Speaker 8Hmm. Uh, none.
Speaker 5Well, how much did you have on the weekend?
Speaker 8I didn't even back it. No, I was just happy for my mate. My mate won the Caulfield cup.
Speaker 7I was happy for it. You're a fucking flea.
Speaker 8Yeah, I know. I knew the answer to that, but I just wanted everyone to hear it.
Speaker 5Jack Jonas. Would you have autumn glow favorite in the Cox plate field and would she win it?
Speaker 8Yes. And maybe.
Speaker 5She would be favored in this Cox plate field. Yeah. She would be favorite. No, she wouldn't win. I don't think she'd win it based off what the brutal tempo that she didn't fail, uh, was able to sustain in the, in the autumn. How many more we got? Jack Jenkins. Not a question, but a statement. Aliana just has to start in the cup. Those are all of the Twitter ones. And I'll just go over to Instagram and I'll pick out some of the best ones here. Um, I'm not staying on right now, but Connor, Connor Rochacoli. Please touch on bot and being with Gav after Kingswood win. Unsure on the backstory.
Speaker 6We've already touched on that.
Speaker 8Gav's just a good friend of mine and I was, um, I, you know, I went to watch the race with him cause you know, uh, we were talking about the race and we went in there together and we, I didn't, you know, we didn't expect to win obviously. And, um, I just found myself next to him and celebrating with him, giving him the hard tag when Kingswood won. Um, you know, just very lucky, very lucky. There you go.
Speaker 5Harry Watts. What's the best place to watch the races from at Flemington? It's the Hillsborough. Hill stand for sure. I think, or even the, the old member stand near the glass out there, but the hill stand, you can see the whole straight. Um, Guy Dolphin. Will there ever be a Cox plate as good as 2019 with all these useless Sydney races? That probably wasn't even the best one, the Lees-Grochere one, but, um, yeah, it is annoying. It is very annoying. Coop's Irwin. Has there ever been a bigger fall off than, um, Antino $3 in a Cox plate and then retirement six months later? Uh, that has been a big, big, big drop off. Wild. Coop's Irwin, Nico, what's your favorite niche Cox plate moment? Um, do you have one? A Cox plate memory that is a little bit out of the norm.
Speaker 6Alamos was pretty good. It wasn't, it wasn't really out of the norm. I think my favorite one. State of rest was good to me. That was in COVID.
Speaker 5My favorite one has to be like that, that, that 10 seconds where I thought Mr. Brightside won. No, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry guys. But for me, it was the difference in thousands and thousands of dollars. I thought Mr. Brightside won and then when, when Romantic Warrior got called.
Speaker 6I'm going to say state of rest because I backed him. We backed him at what? 50? 50 to one. Yeah. And then Animo because I loved him.
Speaker 5Yeah. Chingy Fong. Why is there a debate? Getterian Darby distance, but not the Oaks. Also attempt to best sprinter in the world.
Speaker 6No, she's not the best sprinter in the world. I don't know.
Speaker 8I guess it's the same thing. She was the best horse of the day.
Speaker 5She's not the best sprinter in the world. I think she's a, she's number two or number three. Dane Winley. Benny, do you need a shoulder to lean on after Saturday? It was a sad day. Yes. Just drink your sorrows away. That's exactly what Caelan Marshall has said. Uh, Jakey Weggs.
Speaker 6No shoulder for me.
Speaker 5No, no for you. Coyne Rising got beat because Bot wore the silk. I'm the Moz. You are the Moz. Heidi, uh, Heidi Midali. When's the Armour Guard truck coming back?
Speaker 6Armour Guard's staying away for a while.
Speaker 5Champions Day, I reckon. Uh, Caleb, shout out to Ben for saying Saturday will be a punter's day. Yeah, no worries. Hopefully you had a good day. Just because I say it's going to be a punter's day, doesn't mean that you are either going to have a bad day or a good day. Yeah. I'm sure if you.
Speaker 6It's a bit like what you call the horse of moral.
Speaker 5Yeah. It's just like, you just want someone to blame for, um, uh, you know, your own bets that you have responsibility for. Uh, Isaac Birrell, have any of you used AI in your form slash punting? How do you think this will be used in the future?
Speaker 8No, I haven't. But, um, I don't know.
Speaker 5Well, is expected rating some form of AI or not really?
Speaker 8Well, it's just the database. It's just, I mean, it's just using what the, the, um, the starting price was and, you know, the likely winning standard. So. Um, from
Speaker 6what I've heard, people that do use AI. It's going to become more and more prevalent. It just, it just helps them. It saves them time. Yeah. More than anything. If you can input the right data into your system, it can make things quicker. Yeah. And it can just highlight things that you might have missed.
Speaker 5Yeah. Last question from Bailey Kelly. If you could own one horse, uh, one racehorse from tonight currently, who and why? Um, take it. Ownership of one racehorse that's currently racing. Who would you pick? Oh, it's the same question. You must've just asked it to us. If you could own one racehorse from tonight who is currently racing, who and why? Hmm. Delius. So Delius, just cause it's going to win the Cox plate, hopefully. I hope so. And it's also still a stallion. So there's a bit of it after racing. Nico. Um. Um.
Speaker 6I, I would probably say, oh, well, if, uh.
Speaker 5I'm going to go with the next episode because I think he's a very good favorite for the cool mall. And if he wins that, he's already a very expensive call to begin with. He's by I'm invincible out of Hummer Hummer, isn't he? Yeah. And if he wins that, he's going to be worth a gazillion dollars. I'd have Ombudsman. Ombudsman. There you go. A very good one in Europe. All right. That is our, our Cox plate podcast. It was a bit of a pox plate last week, but hopefully we can find the winner of the Cox plate this week. Nico is struggling. He's hanging on for absolute dear life, but hopefully you aren't this Saturday. Hopefully you back plenty of winners and let's turn it all around punters. Last week, maybe not the best week of all time,
Speaker 6but if our school gets beat, I'm done. We've got,
Speaker 5we've got a Cox plate coming up. We've then got Derby day and then we've got champions day. And hopefully there's morals galore. You win some, you lose more for free and confidential support. Visit gambling, help online, www.patreon.com.au.

Podcast Summary

Key Points:

  1. The Racing Previews podcast reviews The Everest, where favourite Ka Ying Rising was beaten by Tempted, who rated 105.9 and is now considered Australia's best sprinter.
  2. The panel criticises the World Pool tote for slow price fluctuations, noting Tempted's live odds showed $15.50 as she hit the front before flashing $8 at the post.
  3. Gavin Bedggood won the Caulfield Cup with Kingswood, with the co-host celebrating alongside him on camera, and Kingswood may target the Hong Kong Vase next.

Summary:

FAQs

The Cox Plate is Australia's great weight-for-age race, run over 2,040 metres. This year it is being held at Flemington rather than its usual Moonee Valley home.

The 2,040-metre distance is the traditional Cox Plate trip, and organisers wanted to keep it for the race even though it is being run at Flemington.

Ka Ying Rising was beaten by Tempted in The Everest, rating well below his Hong Kong form. He didn't handle the turn or the ground well, and the panel noted he may not be the same horse when travelling to Australia.

Kingswood won the Caulfield Cup for trainer Gavin Bedggood. The plan is reportedly the Zipping Classic and then potentially the Hong Kong Vase.

The main best bet was Ice Cool in race one at Flemington. Other picks included Lindemann in the Craven Plate at Randwick, Sir Delius in the Cox Plate, and Two Down To Screed as a value bet in the Tezio.

Connections are chosen at random to pick their own barriers on stage. Land Legend's connections chose barrier 12, while Sir Delius landed the ideal gate of five.
