Corey Munce - Gerringong Can Make a Statement in the Nivison

Toby Edmonds joined the program to discuss Spicy Martini securing the English spot in the TAB Everest. He explained that talks had been ongoing, particularly between Holly and Sebastian since Stradbroke time, and the deal was completed last week before becoming public on Saturday. Edmonds said Spicy Martini deserves her place after winning the Jewel and the Crown in Queensland, running well in the Stradbroke, and finishing a tough second in the Dermot 10,000. He believes her participation is important for Queensland racing and is pleased by forecasts for rain in Sydney, since she prefers some give in the track and is a good wet tracker. After her last run, she returned home to the Gold Coast for close management by the stable’s farriers and vets, and she has been ticking over well, with a gallop at Eagle Farm planned for Saturday. Edmonds hopes she can be ridden patiently to use her turn of foot. He also noted she was a very cheap online purchase and that her long-term owners are excited, even though one initially opposed targeting the race. While acknowledging top rivals like Ka Ying Rising will be hard to beat, he feels wet conditions could bring Spicy Martini right into contention.

English
Speaker 1Toby Edmonds, he got the call, no doubt, well it might have been a couple of weeks ago, it might have been in the works for a little while, about Spicy Martini getting to the Tab Everest to represent the English spot. It's a great synergy, with it being an online purchase quite cheap, and he joins me right now. Morning, Toby.
Speaker 2Morning, Dave. How are you going?
Speaker 1Very good. When did you find out that this could be a possibility?
Speaker 2I've been talking for a little bit. It sort of became common news on Saturday, I think it was, went public, so yeah, we've been talking for a little bit, Holly's been talking to Sebastian since Stradbroke time, so she's been in the mix since then, and happily got the deal done during last week, which
Speaker 1was fantastic. I think, and I've said this to a few people, I think it's really important for Queensland racing, that Spicy Martini is in this race. It's especially, you know, a mare that has won, you know, the Jewel and the Crown in Queensland, being the Stradbroke, her run on the 10,000 was very good, where she's got some, you know, good form there, so she deserves her spot, and I guess as well, you must be now looking at this long-range forecast, and seeing that there is quite a bit of rain expected in Sydney next week, which would be music to your ears.
Speaker 2Yeah, so, um, the track's quite firm around, well, I don't know how firm it was, it actually warped. It was beautiful, I walked it on a Friday before she ran, and it had a great garret grass cover, but I think it just firmed up with a hot day, sort of, that we had, like a 30-degree day, it firmed up late in the day, so it was pretty firm for her the other day. She does like to get a toe in it, so any rain's appreciated, so I wouldn't like it at 10, but certainly, certainly anything under that's fine.
Speaker 1Okay, so, and I guess, just, what do you do with it between now and then, is it keeping her in the 10,000? She's keeping her in the cotton wool, she's no doubt on the Gold Coast, when does she come down to Sydney? Or is she back, or is she in Sydney after that run?
Speaker 2No, no, no, no, no, we brought her home, so it's quite important that we have, you know, the farriers and the vets and the right people that manage her the whole time through looking at her, so it's just a bit difficult being away from home, to be fair, but, no, we got her home on a Sunday, she travelled home, and she spent a couple of days at the farm, she's been back in the stable. She's been back since the last Thursday, or Thursday before, sorry, and, yeah, she's ticking over well, she just gallops, she galloped last Saturday morning on the course proper here at the Gold Coast, and she heads up to Eagle Farm for a gallop on Saturday in between races, I'm not sure which race, but we'll find that out today, I think, but, yeah, she's going well, really well.
Speaker 1You've been involved with the race before, but it's a little bit different now to what it was when it first started, and when you were involved, and it's grown. You should be very proud, you and the team, and Taylor, that she's there.
Speaker 2We are, you know, she's been a very honest filly all the way through, and she progressed each preparation, so she's built on a record, obviously got the group one level when we asked her for that effort, and that's what she does, she seems to, every time we ask her, you know, especially the other day, that was probably the hardest sprint race she's been against. You know, Jolly Star, those other things, obviously she hasn't been tempted or any of those ones yet, or the Good Horse, but every time we've asked her for that extra effort, she's always been able to perform well. We tested her in the Dermot 10,000 at Wait for Age with the view to running in this race, obviously, and she ran a really tough second. I don't think we've actually been able to ride her where she needs to be ridden, but I'm confident that she's going to do well. I'm confident that every day she'll be ridden, you know, sort of second half, where she can sort of use a turn of foot, which she has, I know there's others in the race with a turn of foot as well, but she's certainly got one, if she's ridden in that way, as she did in her second trial back this time through.
Speaker 1And for those that don't know the story, she was a very, very cheap purchase online, and your ownership group, they've been a little long-term client, so they're going to really enjoy themselves this next week, they're going to lap up every moment.
Speaker 2And that's what we've sort of, how we sold it to them, you know, probably not going to get a horse that's going to be able to run in an Everest or compete, so, you know, there was a bit contentious sort of getting it over the line, a couple of, one of the clients didn't really want to go there, but the other, the rest of them did, which was sort of got the percentage in that favour, especially with Kayeen rising there. She's always, it's going to be awfully hard to beat. But, you know, the wet track might just hold a few of them back. I know Tempted handles the ground. Ninja was really good in the trial yesterday on the softish ground. He's a good wet tracker. But this filly's also a very good wet tracker, so, you know, that brings us right into the race if that happens.
Speaker 1Really good to chat with you. Toby, how's the rest of the stable going there at the Gold Coast?
Speaker 2Yeah, pretty good. I don't have a big team now. We've got 20 in work, or 25 or something, but we've got a lot going on. We've been ticking over pretty good. A couple of runs this afternoon that are chances, so looking forward to the day.
Speaker 1Can we have a bet?
Speaker 2Today, one's very short, so you can do what you like there. The other one's about seven or eight bucks, but he's a chance. Maybe just a tad short for him, but he'll be getting home at the right end of the race.
Speaker 1That's race six, number seven, Minto Prince, who's currently $7 and $2. And then your other runner is in race seven, King of Minto, who's $1.35.
Speaker 2Yeah, he's a bit short, but happy if he wins.
Speaker 1What about placing to win? Minto Prince to place, and even money into King of Minto to win.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's probably good all up, yeah. $2.70, $2.70. Yep, you'd love that.
Speaker 1Yeah, something on that.
Speaker 2When he all goes.
Speaker 1Well, mate, did you get some of the $2.70 King of Minto, or is it their scratchings?
Speaker 2No, it opened up short yesterday, I feel.
Speaker 1It opened $2.70.
Speaker 2Yep. Oh, I did it?
Speaker 1Okay. Yeah, King of Minto, $2.70 to $1.35. All right. Someone's got your price. Someone's let rip. Someone's got your price, Toby. Hey, see you next week.
Speaker 2Thanks, David. Cheers, mate.
