It is not our only result of the day, but it is the most shocking and it is the most important and it is the, uh, the best game. Big Ev, I will start with you because it's only fair. Indiana 13, Ohio State 10, what are your thoughts? Uh, we got out, we got outcoached. I mean, we got beat. We just got beat. We got served a big fat slice of humble pie. Um, that was, if we were going to lose, that was the way I envisioned it. Like I knew the defense would get tortured because we just didn't score. Uh, I underrated Indiana's defense immensely. Like I saw the physicality in the Oregon game. They were definitely better than last year, but, um, not their defense has beat us today. Um, yeah, I mean, I mean, I, it's crazy because they obviously, they go down, they get the touchdown and take the lead. Great throw, great catch. Um, we drive down inside the 20 twice, get no points. I hated the both third and one calls. Didn't really understand it. Hated the QB sneak with Sam. Like I, I just, he didn't really run it much all year. And then they kick it the second time, which I, I had the thought in my head before, after the third down play, I was like, we're not going to kick this. Like he hasn't kicked this all year. Like we go for it every time he does it. We miss. I think the gambling got the football gods responded accordingly to such a pussy field goal attempt. That was, um, we got what we deserved period. That was day pissed on his leg. He, he was, he was pussy day today. That's what happens. A flat out, a flat out coaching disaster from Ryan day in the second half of that football game. Um, just again, uh, a lot of credit, a lot of, uh, attention will go in the fourth down call sneaking from on fourth and a yard and a half kicking the field goal. When you're at fourth and one, uh, the third down calls were absolutely goddamn atrocious. Bo Jackson was running the football at will, especially on the second drive. The second drive was, it was such a grown man drive. It was 14 plays. It was 80, 90 yards. And it was everything about what sets Ohio state apart and makes them tough. And then Ryan day just pissed it away and just said, fuck it. They're going to do it. They're They tried this cute ass pass on third down saying he had the running back, by the way, if he throws it anyway, uh, T Bob, everybody all year with good reason said Ohio state, there's a gap between them and everybody else. Well, not only does that gap not exist, Indiana has now beaten them. And Indiana is the number one team in the country going to this cost for all playoff. Yeah. Uh, look, I, I, I feel, uh, pretty vindicated in my read on this game. A lot of people trying to act like Indiana was still the cute story where that they were last year. And they were really better than people gave them credit for last year. And somehow they were again better than people gave them credit for coming into this game. We said it like statistically what they did over the course of a big 10 season was not just a function of schedule and it was not fluky. And it was a very close game. Did you barely evenly matched teams? It's not like Indiana just thought out better than Ohio state, but the entire point was to the right there with them. And then if you play these games, things go. Game flow matters. And, and, and what was one of the, uh, the areas that we highlighted specifically on the episode the other day. Oh, it was a bit surprised to learn that Indiana's red zone touchdown percentage in terms of touchdowns allowed defensively was even better than that of Ohio state best league. Well, Ohio state makes to the red zone four times. They come away with one touchdown. They have to turn around downs, miss field goal, absolutely choke job there and make a field goal. Um, this Indiana team's just legitimate. Like they got fucking guys all over the field defense. Offensively, I mean, they lose Omar Cooper jr. At the very beginning of this game, they don't miss a beat and, and the toughness from saying toughness from Mendoza. He, you want to talk about a guy who isn't flipping afraid Fernando Mendoza attacking all night long, willing to throw the deep ball against that excellent secondary, uh, the third and eight fade touchdown to Surratt, the third and five deep ball to Charlie B from Nashville, Tennessee. To keep the final drive going. That was a fun football game. Well played by two elite teams. Look forward to watching both of these teams in the playoffs. Then Liam, you talked about, um, the Andrew Luck interview, you know, uh, uh, giving you, uh, emotion and love the Mendoza postgame interview is what I love about sports. So fucking much, man. He was so sincere and so happy in this cynical age in which we live. Shout out to all the Indiana Hoosiers fan. There is no better audio in sports history. Uh, I believe you were, I don't remember T-Bob being on it as much as he just claimed to be, but I believe you were also on Indiana possibly winning this game, right? Yeah, no. I mean, I, I said, I, I agree with you, Brandon. I thought I was the only one that said it was going to be close, but I will say I'll push back a little bit. Now, first and foremost, Ev, I feel the same way as Brandon, but it doesn't matter. Ev, you will be fine. You'll be in the playoff. You're going to be fine. Like this is not an anti Ohio state thing, but I did, I had to text Lukey and I felt bad. I didn't know he was sick. And I said, I know you're Ohio state fan. And I'm so sorry that I have to do this to you, but can you please tell me when my rant about Indiana, not having a gap between them and Ohio state was that Mark Cuban, like, because I need it like right now, because on November 4th, I sat here and I was crazy and I was dropping every FOM I possibly could. But I sat there and I was like, why are we saying that the gap is so big between Ohio state and Indiana when Indiana is dominating when they have now they played Penn state really close, obviously. And I said, maybe it is a little bit bigger, but I sat here. So you said, everybody said that I sat here and I was like, why are we all of a sudden saying that this Indiana team is so far beneath Ohio state? We saw that tonight. Now they play again, Ohio state beats him. It wouldn't surprise me. This is not like an Ohio state versus Indiana. Who's the better team. But tonight proved what I tried to say all season, which is, I don't understand where that narrative came from. Watching the way Indiana has played all year. I I'll just say where I think it came from. I think it came from my belief that Ohio state was a much better football team. Uh, and when Indiana, Indiana didn't look great at Iowa, Indiana didn't look great at Penn state. And I thought to myself, when they get against Ohio state, boy, if they can't handle the physicality of Penn state, Iowa, look the fuck out. And Indiana walked out there tonight and said, fuck you, Brandon Walker, which they've done a lot of in the last couple of years, by the way, they've, they've done a lot of, uh, fuck you, Brandon walkers. But I, yeah, I, I certainly call me a Mr. Gap because I thought there was a huge gap between these two teams. I thought Julian saying would play better, uh, in a tight game. I thought Ohio state's offensive line could protect Julian saying better. I thought Ryan day would his brain wouldn't absolutely malfunction. Liam, you're the only guy who hasn't talked yet. So, uh, please you, you were with me as far as how unbeatable you thought Ohio state was coming to this game. And then they got beat. Yeah. I, I I'm a big time doofus idiot is what it is. Uh, obviously I, I think that there's a lot of takeaways from this game. I think once again, the most impressive thing Indiana does week to week when they're playing college football games on Saturday is the pressure that they're bringing defensively and how they're doing it with creativity off the edge and getting to the quarterback. They really made things difficult for say, and, and their game. And like two, like their coverage is so dang good downfield that saying does have time and still can't get anything going. But the, the, The pressure that they bring off the edge is just very difficult to deal with. They, for lack of a better word, I can't really think all too well right now, they assaulted Ohio State's offensive line. They got after it in the run game, rushed defense again. They did a very good job. Lamar Bojack, Bo Lamar Jack still plays a solid game. But Indiana's defense stands tall. You guys already talked about Ohio State's play calling on short yardage was absolutely apparent. The way to put it is Ryan Day reverted to the Ryan Day of old. Ryan Day two years ago where he's trying to galaxy brain everything to completely outsmart and catch the defense off guard. I don't know why he reverted to the turtle in the shell today. I don't understand it. Big time props to Kurt Cignetti, another excellent coach game by him. Ev, I have a question for you. Because after you guys beat Michigan and handled them and it was like, okay, got that monkey off the back, Ryan Day learned his lesson last year. There were moments tonight, and like we said, he got outcoached. He just flat out got outcoached by Kurt Cignetti. And there were just moments where I'm watching the game and it's like, so this isn't necessarily like a rivalry game problem that he has. This just like lives somewhere in his brain. And I don't know how from an Ohio State fan, like when you're watching it, that has to be frustrating because you have all the talent in the world. You know how good this offense is. You know how good this defense is. And he just can't get out of his own way. Regardless, every single season, there's one game where he does this. Yeah, I mean, as far as the play calling, I mean, Brian Hartline calls the plays now. So that's where it's like, even like the bad play calls, like that's like Hartline's calling the plays. Like Day did not call those plays. I mean, the field goal is obviously 100% his decision. And I think that was maybe the most apparent, like just terrible one of all. The third and one calls were both bad. I don't know. I just don't, I don't understand. Like the defense played well, I thought overall. Like, I mean, Mendoza, I mean, they made some unbelievable plays. I mean, that big throw at the end of the game, even two, just to kind of like put it away, basically leave us with really like no real shot to go tie the game. But yeah, I mean, the field goal was really the worst thing by him. They took out Thick Bull in the second half and the offensive line played a lot better. They were moving the ball in the run game too, way more than they were in the first half. But yeah, I mean, no, he just got out coached. There's no like, I mean, I think he got out coached, but like, are we making too much of it? Like, I don't know. I feel like everybody's trying to have it both ways. Like we're trying to say, okay, no, Indiana's way better than we thought. And, and, and they're, they're, they're as good as Ohio state, but Ryan day sucks. And he fucking blew this game. I mean, it's kicker, Mr. 27 yard field goal. Like, I'm not saying he is above criticism, but it's not the starting point. The starting point is that Indiana has the talent to run with this team. Last year, they did not. It was so clear. We talked about it the other day. They spent the entire off season, upgrading the offensive line. First and foremost, they held up against any elite Ohio state pass rush for the most part. And we talked about it the other day, the defense had 103 tiffles coming into this game. Second place in the big 10 was like 83. This has been a team that all year long has performed at this level. I don't blame Ryan day for this. He ran into a bad-ass team and a bad-ass coach. That's why I wanted to point out that. That's why I wanted to point out. He wasn't the one calling the plays. Like, I don't think it's like all on him. I just hate that he kicked the field goal, obviously. But first of all, the reason I asked the question was because we're looking at a team or again, I said, Indiana was right there with them all year. So I've definitely never said that they aren't as good. My question was, is because when you look at why Ohio state lost this game, there were things they did in this game. They've not done all year making the decisions that he made. You didn't see him make that all year. You didn't see them run up against a defense like they did. So the question is, is, is Kurt Cignetti out coaching Ryan day, a real, a real reason they lost this game or is it just a part of the storyline? That's why I was asking. I'm not trying to have it both ways. Liam mentioned it, the coverage, even in the secondary, all of these things play into it. But when you look at the narrative of this game, Ryan day did not coach the way that he's coached all season. He did not. Because they ran into a team that was on their level. Right. But that's the thing. They won a national title last year. So it's easy to like, you don't, we thought he got the monkey off of his back and he wouldn't be scared of the coaches on the other sideline. This was a very even game. Gameplay between two very good teams, probably maybe the two best teams in the country. It was a very even game. But the reason I lean on talking about Ryan day so much T Bob is Ohio state drove the ball down twice in the second half in a very tight game. And it comes down to the itches. It comes down to the choices. It comes down to everything. And tonight he made the wrong choice every single time. So these are two even teams. And at the end of the day, one of them's holding a trophy and one of them's not. And the reason the one is holding the, the trophy is because the other coach melted down in this situation. Now I, I, the kicker misses the kick, right? And it was a terrible decision to kick that and everything. But even, even if Ryan day, even if Ohio state makes that kick, Ryan day has just given Indiana a tie game with two minutes and 51 seconds left. They were going to go down and kick a field goal. Like, like in the end, I felt the second that kicker came on the field, Ryan day said, we're going to lose this football game. And I'm the one that's going to do it. That's what I felt. I felt, a thousand percent agree. And also Indiana missed a field goal or in earlier in the game too. So they should have even been up more, but Ryan day making the decisions that he did consistently throughout this game was not consistent with what he did last year. Other than Michigan. Hold on. Hold on. We've got chaos in Charlotte. Oh, wow. I wasn't even watching it. It is. No, that's, that's a touchdown. I mean, there's not even a reason to review it. Well, I mean, he's out of bounds. So there's a reason for you, but, I think he's out for the who's he's out of bounds. But if they just rule, if they, if they rule, he was pushed out. Did the ref throw his hat? He was tied. It's tied. Kick the extra point. So it doesn't matter. The ref threw his hat. He's good to go. Right. In that, the hat's there and you get pushed out. Uh, throwing the hat is he went out, right? I thought throwing the hat means he got pushed out legally. He threw the hat instead of the flag. Uh, well, it's not a flag until he touches the ball though. Uh, okay. I, I, for whatever reason, I thought if you get pushed out, you throw the hat and maybe you just throw the hat every time. I think the hat, the hat is like, Oh, he's out. We need to talk about that in a second. That's why that makes sense. Uh, all right. So we'll have to agree to disagree on this Ryan day front. Shut up though. I mean, do you think he coached? He did a good job tonight relative to, to who he is and what Ohio state is. I just think it's too much acting. Nobody's nobody's poop. Poo in Indiana. You're trying to wipe. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. I don't think anybody's poo poo in Indiana. I just think it's acting like this is too much of a one-sided affair. And that if Ryan did like that, it was all in Ryan days to decide the outcome. It was in his hands and only his agency mattered, but he fucked it up. I get what you're saying about losing like a high leverage moments in the margins, but Ohio state won those early on. Indiana got to pick it, turn into a field goal. How state got to pick it, turn it to a touchdown. Indiana missed field goal. How's it made their first? Go ahead. Go ahead. I'll just talk later. Go ahead. Two teams showed up tonight. Two defenses showed up tonight. Two defenses were amazing. It comes down to very, very, very, very minute and small moments. And Ryan day made sure he failed every time it was on him. And that's for a national championship caliber coach. And I think just winning coach. I think you should expect more than that. That's all. That's that's why it's like the nitpicking of how close this game was. Like you couldn't look at one, one phase of the game and say, Indiana or Ohio state was just leaps and bounds better. But when you do start to look at, at everything that happened, the coaching decisions made on the Indiana sideline versus the Ohio state sideline were different. And that's why we're allowed to pick that apart because he did win a national title last year. And when he did try to coach against, like, it was like he was coaching out of his own brain tonight. Again, we've seen him do that against Michigan in the past. I didn't expect to see that tonight after we thought he got the monkey off his back. Well, let's hand out some flowers. Fernando Mendoza, baby. Absolutely not. Let's hand out the flowers to the coach. Kurt Cignetti was hired from JMU two seasons ago, two off seasons ago. There was no reason to believe at the time. It was the greatest hire in the history of college football. There was no reason to believe he was going to go to the worst place, the worst program in college ball history. And within less than two seasons, have them at number one in the country, going to the playoff after beating the defending national champ. There's no, there was no reason to believe it. That's what he has done. And last year, he takes them to the playoff this year, not only taking them to the playoff, but taking them in with a big set of nuts, swinging off the truck saying, by the way, we're here to fucking win at this time. That's what Kurt Cignetti has done. Big F. I know you just lost to him, but it's almost like you just got, you lose to Michigan. You're like, fuck them. You lose to a person. Eddie, you almost got to tip your hat. Like, God damn, they've come a long way. No, I mean, that's why I'm, I'm not made like they beat us. They beat us. And especially, I'm sure a lot. I mean, a lot of the same guys from last year, I'm sure they've been stewing on that one for a year plus now, but we've just been kind of riding along, happy, just getting wins and winning pretty easily and get them, get the Michigan monkey off our back. I mean, no, what he's it's, I mean, it's the greatest, like two year, like turn around. I mean, just whatever you want to call it, like in the history of college football. I mean, they were the losing his team in college. they're going to go into the playoff as the number one seed. They won the big 10. I mean, they incredible. I mean, it's, it's incredibly what he's done is on. It's like on, there's nothing really to compare it to. Like it's, it's that incredible what he's done. There's nothing to compare it to. Um, we do have the ACC championship game, which is either for Virginia to get in the playoffs or Duke to force a conversation with JMU. We will be live tomorrow morning at 11 central when this playoff gets announced. So we're, I don't think we're going to take much time tonight and have the discussions about Alabama getting in BYU, getting in stuff like that. Uh, Hey, with Ohio state losing an A and M hovering around that six line, you know, you, you two might be headed towards a showdown. I don't know. I know I've thought about it, but that's a future us problem. It's a future us problem. Okay. But the, the, I mean, Oh, Ohio state will definitely get that. Get the, uh, you know, get, get a buy, no doubt. But I didn't think there was going to be much movement at all in the, you know, the top. What? Six, seven. There may be, but I think it's pretty clear. We're going to have number one, Indiana, number two, Georgia, number three, Ohio state or three Texas tech and four Ohio state or Texas tech. Like that's the, that's, those are the two spots that I guess they could juggle a little bit. Um, I don't know if they massage it due to matchups or whatever, but anyway, let's talk about Georgia who. Indiana's got the head. Indiana's got the headlines tonight. Indiana's, uh, just had the biggest win in the history of their school. Georgia got a big monkey off their back and they are walking into this playoff as they're playing as well as they played in a couple of years. Now they have been quietly just killers down the stretch T Bob and, uh, much can be said about Alabama and Kalen DeBoer and, and, and are they in, or are they out? Well, Georgia, Georgia made a big statement today. Yeah. It's, uh, every now and then. I feel like you watch a game and you kind of kick yourself because it appears so obvious with the benefit of hindsight. And in this one, uh, I, I just feel like Kirby smart was due like this idea that we had all accepted that he had an Alabama problem and not a Nick Saban problem. Uh, it was, it was an idea that I believe was too cute for its own good. Like DeBoer got him twice. Don't get me wrong, including in Georgia, which was crazy, but DeBoer is a damn good coach as well. And then Alabama is a good team. Uh, but the idea that he was just going to get it like three times in a row in that building, that's an incredibly heavy lift for DeBoer. And you saw today. And then plus Brandon, again, bit of it of hindsight, you go and you look at Alabama, how they finished season, maybe even Ty Simpson specifically. It hasn't looked good lately. Right. Uh, after the big Tennessee win in which you had the major turnover that kind of decided that game, you struggled at South Carolina, struggling tells you you lost Oklahoma, whatever, Eastern Illinois struggled against Auburn. Like. Ty Simpson's up in himself. This Bama team hasn't been itself. And this is a motivated UGA team that maybe outside of tech has been in pretty damn good form. So bottom line, Kirby smart, had a Nick Saban problem, not an Alabama problem. Monkey office back SEC championship and Georgia looking, uh, very solid. I don't, I don't think they're quite as good as the two teams you saw in the big 10 championship, but they are capable of beating them. But Georgia looking very solid today. What's wrong, Brandon. I'm just trying to figure out what to do with Ohio state. Now. I, I, Ohio state is very, very, very fucking good. They beat Texas to open the season 14 to seven. Their schedule was fucking awful tonight. They got in a rock fight and Ryan day kind of stubbed his toe a couple of times, but Indiana is good too. So they were right there with them. But like, is Georgia as good as Indiana? And Ohio state, I, I, I don't know the answer to that question. I'm going to have to really, I'm going to have to pray about this. I'm going to have to pray about it and meditate on it because like Ohio state, I, and listen, I, I have credibility here. Somebody who's not doubted Ohio state at all, but I really think you got to think about saying, like Sam kind of looked here in the headlights a little bit last tonight when they heated his ass up. He was fluttering some balls there in the second. I'm just saying this was a team with zero questions six hours ago. Now there's questions and Georgia, Georgia looks like they've got their shit together. So I don't know if I would say they're not as good as Indiana and Ohio state. I think the defenses are all on par with one another. All three. Great. Uh, I think Georgia doesn't have the skill positions that Ohio state and Indiana has. Well, Georgia skill positions, but branch look good branch branch out of that good play at the end, but I don't think they have it overall. See, like I would have said coming in today that Georgia didn't have the defense. This was Georgia's best defense. I thought by far of the season, like this was a different Georgia defense. And I saw a year. I thought that's like I said, I thought the gap that they had was like, Oh, like they don't have the defense that Ohio state has. That'll be the difference. Their defense played that way today. Like they're, they're right there. Like they're definitely, I watched that game was okay. Like put a pin in that, like they're, they're playing their best ball at the right time. They've been clutch all year, but it seems like they've really started to dominate the waning weeks of the season. No, I'm Georgia's definitely right there for sure. Well, they also, did you see that? Did they, they also stopped the best offense in the country. Did nobody see this? Well, four blank faces. Okay. No, just for, okay. Read Twitter one time. This motherfucker, uh, this motherfucking quarterback for Alabama, this fucking quarterback, uh, came out after the game said, I still think we're the best offense in the country. No, you're not. He looked so bad. Uh, no, I mean, I think, you know, and we do this every year. It's like, what's the one? You don't want to see going into the playoff that other than like the one or two seed. And I feel like going into this, it's like, you know, it's Georgia, it's Georgia. And to me, the big 10 championship obviously was a Heisman trophy on the line. Who's going to win the big 10. And then also who's not going to have to play Georgia. If it matches up, it's like, who's going to avoid them longer because Georgia is that team to me. And I agree with Ev that their defense had kind of looked shaky. Their offenses looked pretty good. And now you look at the way that they played. And I mean, and, and also Alabama just did not play well at all. So it wasn't even just Georgia. I mean, Georgia deserves the flowers for sure. Alabama looks like shit. Um, but yeah, I, I would put Georgia right there with Ohio state and Indiana immediately. Minus three rush yards. Oh shit. Dookie, uh, Georgia, Georgia finishes with minus three rush yards brand with only three sacks, which, so not an insane, like, I mean, they probably rushed for like, like 20 yards maybe in this entire game, Alabama did. And I know Alabama struggled to run the ball all season long, but they, they had, they had the good night against sovereign. Um, they were good in the first game against Georgia and that's why they had success. They ran it well in Athens and went 13 to 19 on third down tonight. Couldn't run it for shit. But that's the way that these former Alabama players are looking at this team right now, because it's like, not only did they get their doors blown off by Georgia, they just aren't playing the Alabama brand of football that these guys are used to playing. opportunities to go pay pay players they hired a texas coach and said we're gonna we're gonna invest everything we got into winning in football and they poured it in man and they went out and bought a You still have had a very, very mediocre Duke team in, but 99 times out of 100, like, this is an anomaly. And it's year two, and it's an anomaly. And we're all cognizant of that. They lost their first playoff game as 24-point favorites. At home, starting quarterback Cole Payton was four of 12, gets hurt up seven with under two minutes to go. They blow the game. Tommy Rittenhouse threw five interceptions and still won the game. They out-totaled North Dakota State by, like, what, 400 yards. It doesn't make sense. It's one of the biggest upsets in college football postseason history. Illinois State, the Redbirds, the boys from normal Illinois pull off the most unnormal upset we'll see all year. Ooh, nice. Casey, who lost the week? Uh, I think it's Alabama fans. I think, I mean, we'll see what happens tomorrow, but as of right now, I do feel like if you're not a Tuscaloosa person or you're not Greg Sankey, uh, you're, you're saying Alabama should be left out of the playoff and to go into a championship weekend as the brand of Alabama and know that there's an entire voice out there saying, like, fuck that, leave him out. You lost the weekend. Who lost the week? I think it's probably BYU. Um, I mean, they're not going to get in the playoff. I think it's definitely, they have a strong argument. It's unfair to lose to a top four team in the country twice, handle business otherwise and not get in.
