The podcast discusses the disparity between traditional French language teaching and the actual spoken language in daily life. Dialogues on greetings in various contexts are analyzed, highlighting differences between formal and informal language use. The host critiques formal expressions like "How do you call yourself?" and suggests more natural alternatives. For example, in informal conversations, "moi c'est" is proposed as a more common way to introduce oneself than "je m'appelle". Similarly, using "salut" instead of "bonjour" among friends is recommended for a more natural interaction. The podcast also provides insights into dialogues at a bakery, pointing out formal phrases like "que voulez-vous?" and suggesting friendlier alternatives such as "que désirez-vous?". Overall, the episode aims to help learners understand and speak French more naturally by comparing textbook language to authentic spoken French.

[Music] Welcome to this new episode of Olala French Podcast. The podcast that allows you to improve your French as well as better understand the French, the French and the French as well as their culture. Serve yourself a good cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate and let's go. Do you find that there is a huge difference between the French that you have learned in a traditional school and the French that you have heard speak in France? Often the French that you learn in the manuals of traditional French is not close to the one we speak in real life. This is why today we are going to compare conversations of manuals of traditional French to what a native French would really say. Before you start, download your gift. I offer you my free e-book, master the spoken French. This e-book will help you better understand the French when they speak in oral. You can find the link in the description. Let's take a look at the first dialogue on the greetings in French. Good evening, Marie. Um, what's your name? My name is Jacques. Ah yes, what's new, Jacques? Not much. So see you tomorrow, Marie. See you next time, Jacques. Well, first of all, what I found weird in this dialogue is the "How do you call yourself?" Well, we don't have the context, but it seems weird to me to form it this way. If we forgot the name of someone, we will say "Excuse me, can you remember your name?" I have a hole in my memory. It's still more polite and natural than "How do you call yourself?" Rather, "Excuse me, can you remember your name?" I have a hole in my memory. To give your name in a common context, rather informal, we will generally say "moi c'est", "moi c'est Jacques", for example. It's more natural than "je m'appelle", "moi c'est ma nom", "moi c'est Jacques". So, next dialogue, always on the greetings in French, but in a formal way this time. Hello, how do you call yourself? My name is Jean-Paul Lambert. And you? I am Marc Bernard. Enchanté, enchanté. So the question "how do you call yourself?" is a question with a very formal version. But it's true that it is not very used in the oral, even in a formal context. It is much more used in writing, always in a formal context. So in a formal context, always, but in a more natural way, I would say "Comment vous vous appelez?" "Comment vous vous appelez?" "Où, quel est votre prénom?" "Quel est votre prénom?" "Moi je suis Marc Bernard." It's not too used, I would say, even in a formal context or a formal one. As I said earlier, it's more natural to say "moi c'est". "Moi c'est Marc Bernard." Or more formally, "je m'appelle Marc Bernard." But once again, it's not a very used formula, it's more natural to say "moi c'est". So next dialogue, a conversation between friends. "A bientôt." "A demain, bonne journée."
