College Football Week 4 Picks: Texas-Tennessee, Michigan-Iowa, Oregon-USC  & more

Giant week of picks and previews, and this is a week that will certainly educate us, yes, for one, but also it's going to start paving the road towards the CFP. This is a monster weekend in college football. We start to actually find out about some of these teams that have gone through a weaker slate of non-conference games, so can't wait to get into this. Let's jump right in. I'm going to be in Ohio State in Columbus for the Illinois-Ohio State game. I'm going to be in Ohio State for the Illinois-Ohio State game. And just real quick, obviously, I'm not going to give a pick in this game. A couple of things that I'm excited or want to see, that run game for Ohio State, what is this run game for Ohio State going to look like for Ryan Day? He's touched on it during the course of the week. He's been asked about it. I've talked about it on every one of my shows. What are they doing in short yardage, and specifically from the backfield. Legend Bay left that game last week with a bit of a, I think it was an ankle. They like Jacoby Jackson, the transfer from Florida. Bo Jackson, what is he giving them? They need to find out. They need to find out what's going on. They need to find somebody that can execute in short yardage, and more specifically, make somebody miss at the second level. The job of a great running back is to be a plus running back. I've talked about this before at times. A plus running back is always going to gain more yards than what the offensive line allows, or blocks for. So if it's blocks for four, which is a pretty good job by the offensive line, the running back gains six, gains eight. A plus running back. And right now, they need to find that in their backfield, and we'll see if they can do that. Jeremiah Smith's on his march towards 3,000 career yards. Could get it in this ball game. He's got 30 touchdowns in just, what, 32 games in his career, which is ridiculous. And then a bunch of guys got catches last week to try to solidify that two and three spot in their wide receiver core. Chris Henry, Brock Boyd, Devin McEwen, Brandon Innes, those guys. Defensively, they're going to continue to try to find their depth. And then on the Illinois side, just a couple of guys that obviously have been playing really well. Caden Houser, their quarterback, I like him on film. As I've been studying this game, he gives you a lot. Transfers in from ECU, and they've got Colin Dixon on the outside. And Colin Dixon has been filling up the stat sheet. So far this year, 25 catches, 367 yards, seven touchdowns. So they've got some guys and pieces on the outside. The O-line is banged up. We'll see if they can protect Houser. And then defensively, they've changed their scheme. Now, they were wildly successful. A couple of years ago, you remember, I believe it was the 23 or 24 season, one of those two. Gosh, it's all running together. But Ryan Walters was their defensive coordinator, and they're actually the number one defense in the country. Aaron Henry ended up being a guy that they promoted from within. When Ryan went to Purdue, they ran the same scheme. They have changed that now, and that scheme is totally different. They've changed philosophies on defense, and they've gone to the 3-3-5 defense. That 3-3-5 was famous. And made famous by Iowa State. They play a lot of coverage, a lot of drop eight. It's not necessarily a defense that is expected to get after the quarterback. So it could be a little bit tougher sledding for Julian Sane in that passing game for Ohio State. But that's what I'll be looking for in that one. That's big noon Saturday. Gus, Jenny, and I will be there. We're kicking at noon from the shoe as Illinois takes on Ohio State. We move on. How about Texas, Tennessee? This is a monster game, and I loved our episode that came out yesterday on Wednesday. You need to go back and check that out. Subscribe to the show. You can comment down below. But we talked about these teams that were not inside of the top 10 that have a clean path, a good path, or a possible path towards the CFP. Remember, last year, seven teams of the 12 CFP teams were outside of the top 10. At this moment, going into week four, is Tennessee one of those teams this year? They're 14th in the country, and they get the number one ranked Texas Longhorns in this week in Neyland. That's where I'm going to start, because home teams have been great in these big matchup-style games so far this year. Last week, Louisville. Last week, Ole Miss. Texas at home. It's a thing. Guys, it's a thing. It is very difficult to go on the field. It's a thing. It's a thing. It's a thing. To go on the road and play well, first and foremost, because these are still just young men that are trying to execute intricate schemes for each of these teams. But it's also the emotion that the home team can play with, right? And we see this every week. We saw that with Ole Miss. Ole Miss played so much better last week at the line of scrimmage than what they probably are. More on that in a little bit. And Texas, last year, did not play well on the road. They just didn't. They went two and three on the road, two wins coming in overtime against Kentucky and Mississippi State. They lost to Ohio State, lost to Georgia, and they also lost to Florida. And that was not a great Florida team a year ago. Home field matters, and I think it matters in this one. This is always one of the best environments in all of college football, right, Miss Becky? Woo! Miss Becky out there in Tennessee, you know what I'm talking about. Texas on the road last year couldn't run the football, couldn't protect the quarterback. That was what their problem was. Now, you know, you could say they played better in the second half of the season, there's no doubt, but they were running it for 2.6 yards per carry on the road, and they gave up 18 sacks in those five games. That's a problem, and a clear path for potentially Tennessee to make life difficult on Arch Manning in that Texas offense. Now, Arch has not lit it on fire this year. Listen, that last quarter and a half, if you want to call it that, those last three drives against Ohio State, he was excellent. More gritty than excellent, but he got the job done. Outside of that, guys, and I know that this is a contrarian take, and no one wants to have it, Arch has not been that impressive. I know we all want him to be impressive because of the last name, but he's got to take the next step, and the next step for him is playing well on the road, anticipating throws. Let's go back to the list I was talking about on Monday when I was talking about with Trinidad Chambliss. As a quarterback, if you're a quarterback, you can rely on the passing game, even if you don't have a run game. There's a possibility that that happens. Now, I will say this. I think Texas is a lot better at the line of scrimmage and specifically running the football than they were a year ago. If that shows up for them in this game against Tennessee, then everything's going to be fine, and Arch is going to be out there, and he'll have a good game. On the flip side, I think it's a must for Tennessee. It's vital for Tennessee. They've done a great job of it thus far, running the football, protecting their young quarterback. Remember, Faison Brandon is just a young pup in this game, and this is going to be his first real action of real SEC-quality level play. Can they control the ground game? Can they continue to run the football? They've been one of the best in the country. They ran it for 300 yards on Georgia Tech, and if they do that, then he's not going to be asked to be Superman. He doesn't have to put a cape on his back in a setting in which he's totally unfamiliar. That's a huge key for Tennessee. Now, against that defense for Texas, I want you to be aware of a couple of things. Texas up front under Will Muschamp, their defensive coordinator, they love to play what I would consider to be a high-risk, high-reward style of play. The technique that they use is that they like to get upfield, and they like to attack the gaps in the offensive line. When you do that, you create negatives. Think about it. Last year, they do this. They do this well. UCLA is doing it well right now. You can attack and create negatives, so there's a lot of runs, any plays that go for negative one, zero, and one yard. The problem is it's also a high-risk defense, so you get the reward of the negative plays, but then you can create seams for a running game, and we saw this against Ohio State. I wouldn't say Ohio State ran it great against Texas, but there were moments when they were able to pop a run for a first down, a second down, a third down, and a third down, and so on. So, it's a lot of runs when you can get upfield and outside of your gap, and then you can get a trap. You can do a lot of different things from a run perspective and get it done. Can Tennessee do that against this defensive line for Texas? I think that's going to be interesting. I do find it interesting, Arch going back to Tennessee, a manning in Knoxville, in Neyland Stadium. That's always fun. He was born after Peyton was at Tennessee, so it's not like he's going to be super familiar. So we'll see. And then the last thing, guys, is Colin Simmons. He did leave last week with an injury. It's perceived, at least from what Sark said, that it's precautionary, but he didn't play late in that game. I'm sure it was precautionary against UTSA, but it's just something to pay attention to because he would play a huge role in this game in his ability to get after the quarterback and make life uncomfortable for Faison Brandon. Ultimately, I'm going to go back to this home road deal because Texas, I do believe, is better suited this year to play on the road. I don't think they're going to play great. I don't think they're going to blow out Tennessee. In fact, you're looking at this spread. Texas is favored. By four and a half, I think Texas wins late. They've got that grittiness to them now. Now they know that they can. They can go potentially on the road and play well in the fourth quarter. I think Arch gets it done late. They win this game 30-27, but I'm going to take the four and a half for Tennessee because, again, in these big games, what we've seen this year, home team plays well with the energy and emotion of the crowd. Big one in the big house. As Iowa comes, into Ann Arbor to face Michigan. Iowa and Michigan both on that list from yesterday's show. These teams that are not in the top 10 that could make a run. The winner of this game is set up to put themselves on that path to potentially go to the college football playoff. So a massive game in the big 10, just like we talked about with Texas and Tennessee. If Tennessee wins that game, they've got a very clear path towards the college football playoff. And the same can be said about this game. This just feels, guys, like a low-scoring slugfest, doesn't it? It's a low-scoring slugfest. It's got to, at this point. It's got to. Both defenses are very good, although they do it very different ways schematically. It's hard for me to see how Iowa is going to be able to throw the ball in this game. We saw how good Michigan's defense can be, really in every game, but namely that game against Oklahoma, which was not a great offense. And I know Mateer struggled, and then they've since struggled against New Mexico, but they just had no ability to create an explosive play or gain separation. They have Isaiah Cetanian, so can Iowa throw the football? I want you to pay attention to the tight end for Iowa, not just because it's Iowa, but because that's the best matchup. If you're looking at the Michigan defense, you're seeing a lot of man coverage. I think it's going to be almost impossible to throw it against their corners. They play with three of them, Smith Snowden, Jair Hill, and Zeke Berry. These guys are excellent cover men, so where do you have to attack against man coverage? Number one, you've got to run the football effectively. Number two, you've got to run run action pass, not necessarily play action pass. What's the difference, Joel? Let me explain. Run action pass is when you have a full run action and a fake, and then the quarterback is going to escape outside of the pocket. You have layered routes, and then it's one, two, three. It's a progression red quarterback outside of the pocket, so there's not an actual protection being blocked by the offensive line. In fact, the coaching point is reach and run gap and a half. So that's run action pass. So what it does, is it puts the linebackers in conflict, and then you boot out of it. You get outside of the pocket, and you get a tight end dragging, and it's very difficult for linebackers specifically to cover. Play action pass is different than that. That's when you're going to give a hard downhill fake, and then set up as a quarterback in the pocket. So you're actually blocking a protection. There are hots. There are different adjustments that you've got to make up front. You've got to know where the mic is. You can't just aimlessly reach and run gap and a half. So play action is different than run action. Iowa needs to sit in the run action pass on Saturday and get the ball to their tight end. DJ Von Ami. He's a very good player. Again, pronunciations are not my strong suit. Tony Diaz has been their best player on the outside. I don't think he's going to win a whole lot on the outside. So if you're looking for the ways that Iowa can not just run the football to succeed, but get the ball down the field, I think it's got to be the tight end, the tight end matchup, the run action pass. They're evergreen, not specific to any week in college football and check things out. Now for the Michigan's offense in this game, I think this is actually a really bad matchup for Michigan's offense. Because of the style of defense that Iowa utilizes, which is heavy zone, they're not going to get upfield, they're not going to necessarily attack unless it's third down, and then they'll get creative with the blitz structure. But you're going to see a lot of quarters coverage, low safeties. Again, go and check out these Understanding Football videos. Quarters coverage, low safeties, eyes in the backfield, zone coverage. That's difficult for a quarterback because the style of run game that Michigan likes to use, which was what Utah liked to use, likes to use misdirection. A lot of RPOs, heavy, you know, like jet run fake and then quarterback power. So you're trying to get some lateral movement and stretch in the defense and then attack the seams. Much more doable, I would say, if you're facing a team that likes to run man coverage or brackets. When the linebackers are constantly looking different direction, you can get movement. But Iowa kind of sits there and they let you do what you do and then they rally up, make the tackle. When that happens, it puts a lot of stress on the offense because all the eyes are in the backfield. It puts a lot of stress on the quarterback. I think Bryce Underwood is going to be under some stress in this one. They create tight windows with that zone coverage. They thrive on tips and overthrows. So if I'm Michigan, I do not have a heavy middle-of-the-field passing game against this Iowa defense. I just wouldn't do it. I know a lot of their RPOs like to go over the middle of the field. Those safeties are going to be sitting there, eyes on the backfield. They know their run fit, but they also know the passing structure behind them. I think that would be a dangerous area to be throwing the football if you were Michigan. Michigan could be without their left tackle, Andrew Sprague, this week. We'll see what they're going to be able to do. Can they run it against Iowa? I think field position and turnovers are going to be the key in this game. Michigan's favored by five and a half. I think Michigan wins a low-scoring affair. I could see this being a field goal fest. 13 to 10, think field position. I'm going to take the five and a half for Iowa and I'm going to say Michigan wins 13-10, but Iowa, I'll take the five and a half. Five and a half. Ole Miss, Florida. This is going to be a fantastic game. Florida is favored by three and a half. Most interesting line so far of the season. I think Vegas is trying to tell us something. Yes, they're trying to get bets even on both sides and they know everyone's going to be in on Ole Miss, in particular after that emotional win for Ole Miss last week. I just don't think that there's any way, guys, having played the game and covered the game now for my entire career. I might eat my words here. I don't see a. I don't see a scenario where Ole Miss plays well. They were way too high. There's got to be a come down from what Ole Miss is going to give us this week. I think Vegas is trying to tell us that. I think we should expect that. The line hasn't moved, by the way. So, they're saving grace as they have Trinidad-Chambers. You see, Florida can run the football. Jaden Baugh is excellent. I think he's one of the best, if not the best, backs in the country. Meanwhile, a guy that's also in that conversation, Keewon Lacey, looks like he's probably not available. It looks like he sprained his AC joint. It looks like he sprained his shoulder. He's going to probably play during the course of the season. It's going to be difficult. Every hit is going to hurt. I dealt with the same thing as a right-handed quarterback. I blew out my right shoulder, played through the rest of the season. It was difficult. Every hit, you could feel it. It was tough to sleep. All these different. He's going to be dealing with that for the remainder of the season. I don't see. I don't see how he's going to be available this week. If he is available, I don't know if he's going to be as effective as he was able to be in last year's game. He went for over 220 against Florida in last year's game, but this is a different Florida team. It just is. I love what Summerall is doing. I don't know if Florida's defense is great, but I do know that they can run the football. And LSU proved in the second half that you can run the ball at that Ole Miss defense. It's what allowed the Tigers to come back in that game and tie it up, is because they were able to run the ball. So, you get it. an emotional letdown, you get a team that can run the football. It's at Florida. We know how tough it is to, to win on the road, to play on the road. And with all that being said, listen, I can't bet against him. I can't, I just, I want to, everything in me wants to say, this is a Florida win. And they're going to cover the three and a half. I think that they're up for most of the game, maybe by multiple possessions. And I think late that guy, number six, Trinidad Chambliss throws a cape on his back and brings them all the way back. Why? Because that's what he does in the fourth quarter. Go check out the numbers from our episode on Monday. Go back, listen to it. He's exceptional. I have to take, I have to take him. Everything in me wants to take Florida. I'm going to be, I'm going to look up. We're all going to look up. It's going to be 21 to three at some point. And guess what? He's still there. I'm taking Ole Miss. Gosh, they're going to steal it. They're going to steal it in the fourth quarter. He's going to be amazing. It's going to be 35, 31 Ole Miss. And I already hate the pick. Let's move on. Oregon, USC. Oregon is favored by three and a half on the road. I have to wonder myself right now, was last week a classic look ahead game for Lincoln Riley? Lincoln Riley and USC, or is it just further evidence of what we kind of know USC to be? They don't travel East very well and they don't play very solid defense. Okay. So that's a trend. That's a trend. Then you have to ask yourself, well, was it an anomaly at Oklahoma state for Oregon? Or was that just cause for real concern about their program? Well, see, that's not a trend. Now you could say it's a trend based on the way that they played against Boise state, but I do think Boise state is, is a lot better. And they actually came back and played fine. Could we be worried about Oregon? That's a possibility, but history suggests that they've got more wins in the last few years than, than almost anybody in college football. They get better every single year. They've been in the top eight every single year. They've been in the CFP all these years. They won the big 10 championship. I don't have that track record right now for Lincoln Riley and USC. I don't. What I do have a track record of is that they play really well at home. Really well at home. That is a trend. That is a different team at home than when they have to travel 3000 miles and go out to New Jersey and play Rutgers. And we should know that by the way, Oregon does not play their best on the road. That doesn't mean that they haven't won games. They won at Penn state and a whiteout. But you think about it, they were in a close game against Iowa. They lost a couple of years ago at Washington, like Wisconsin. They struggled in a weird game against Wisconsin on the road. So now they're on the road in a place in which Lincoln Riley and USC are playing. which Lincoln Riley and USC normally plays well. I'm concerned about some of the injuries that USC has. They need Jakeem Stewart back on the defensive line. So which pattern is going to ultimately win out here? Am I really worried about Oregon, or do I kind of know under the surface, yeah, this is probably USC? See, I think this is probably USC. Now we've got evidence that this defense is not vastly improved. I know they got the pick six against Rutgers, but folks, I don't love it. So I think Oregon goes down there and gets the win. Oregon wins this game 45-42, but I'm going to take USC in the points. I think it could be close. I don't know if I trust either team right now. I think it's a high-scoring affair. I think Maiava plays well. I think USC runs the ball well because that defensive line for Oregon is not playing up to their potential. So Oregon wins the game 45-42, and I'm taking the points with USC. But Oklahoma and Georgia, I think this is when we finally realize, like, yep, OU is not going to be very good. This is what we were concerned about in the offseason. They had Michigan. If they lost that game, they had Georgia and Texas coming up. This team is going to be two and three. I don't know if Georgia is going to be all that explosive. I've got an inkling, though, that this team is better than we all anticipated them to be. They're running the football well. They've got a great secondary. Yeah, Stockton is playing well. They're throwing a lot of things at the line of scrimmage. They have not played anybody, but Oklahoma is struggling. Last year, I kept bringing up this main concern for Oklahoma, which was the running backs' yards-per-carry number. They were 120th last year in running back yards-per-carry. This year, you would think that would have improved. They faced UTEP and New Mexico. Yeah, they faced Michigan, but they're 126th in yards-per-carry from the running back. This offense is not very good at all. John Mateer has regressed. If they don't get an explosive play, there's no chance for them to move the football down the field. They're not getting that explosive play against Georgia. Georgia's secondary and Michigan's secondary are very similar. Some of the best secondaries in the entire country. David Stone hurt his knee in practice on Monday. Don't love that at all, at all. Georgia's going to win this game. I think that after this week, we're going to look up and be like, okay, Georgia, that team is very, very good. They're going to win this one 24-10. They cover the 13-and-a-half. There's no question in my mind, and Oklahoma is headed for 2-and-3. College football season is almost here, and if you're like me, this is the best time of year. Desperately need a victory, okay? LSU is favored by 8.5. They're at home. I liked the fight that LSU showed in the second half. You've got to understand, that's an easy game to kind of fold up shop, and they didn't. And they came back, and the offensive line played well in the second half. Levitt played better, although his play has got to be better. They ran the ball well. Dylan Jones now has 100 yards against Clemson and against Ole Miss. I'm concerned that they don't have their tight end trade as green. So who does Levitt have to throw to? Winnie Watkins, who transferred in with Lane from Ole Miss. He's kind of their next leading receiver. Levitt, let me just sit with Levitt for a second. He's got to calm down. He and his opposing quarterback in this game, Marcel Reed, top three in the country in quarterback scrambles, and it's way too quick. You can hear, or not hear, I should say, you can kind of tell that Lane, several times, during the course of the game, Levitt comes off the field, and he's like, hey, man, calm down. Like, relax. Get through your reads. Know what you're looking at. There are times when it's just like, snap, look, run. And when he runs, and he gets agitated in the pocket, he runs to contact. Not a recipe for success. That has to improve. Has to improve for LSU. But they do the right things. Their defense is something that I believe in. I think that's a very good defense. I think they can run. They can run the football. And I think he will continue to get better as they continue to coach him at the quarterback position. Meanwhile, I think A&M is off to a rough start. There are things to like for LSU. I am really struggling finding the things that I like about this A&M team. Now, you can make the argument, if you're wearing the Aggie ring, and you're swaying, well, Joel, we scored 50 and 48 in our two games. Our offense is fine. OU scored over 50 against UTEP. That doesn't mean their offense is fine. But we did it against Arizona State. On 250 yards of total offense, do you realize that there was a defensive score, and the defense put them in a short field two more times? The 48 points that A&M scored against Arizona State is a mirage. That offense is struggling right now. They lost a wide receiver to an injury. Terry Bussey puts more pressure on Mario Craver and Isaiah Horton. Their run game has been average. Marcel Reed has got to get better. They were replacing an offensive coordinator, Colin Kline, left to be the head coach at Kansas State. Now you've got an offensive coordinator. Reed is under 60% completion percentage, not getting anything downfield. And then you look up, and you're like, hold on a second. What's one of the best metrics we have for rating what an offense is? It's yards per play. I don't think it gets talked about enough. It's not really total yardage. It's yards per play. That tells me exactly how good of an offense you really are. Texas A&M, in yards per play, 115th in the country. They're not gaining yards on the road in Baton Rouge against LSU's defense. I do not see it. I do not see it at all. I think OU and A&M are now going to be prime examples of what we see of early top 10 teams that are going to be falling outside of the top 10 and maybe even outside of the top 25 overall. A&M was in there at one point, lose to Kentucky. I think that they lose this game. LSU is going to cover the 8.5 because A&M can't play offense. LSU wins this one 31-14. They bounce back. They get themselves right. Their schedule opens up a little bit after this, and so they clearly still have a path to the college football playoff. But after this loss and their remaining schedule, you start to wonder what A&M actually is this year. And I don't love it. I don't love it. Last game that we'll talk about, Missouri at Mississippi State. I wanted to get to Mississippi State because I love Kamario Taylor. Cowbells are going to be out with this one. They're going to be all lit up in Starkville, and I love it. You bet. I really like Kamario Taylor. I think he's excellent. I've talked about him now for a couple of weeks. I think this is a huge moment for him. Now, their defense, Zach Arnett's defense for Mississippi State, they also went to that 3-3-5 defense. It makes teams earn their way down the field. Iowa State went to that because in the old Big 12, everyone was just taking massive shots, throwing the ball way down the field and playing with hyper speed tempo volume. That's kind of where the SEC has gone. This is not a bad philosophical change to go to this defense if you're Mississippi State. Make the opponent earn their way down the field. Allow your quarterback to go and play well. Missouri didn't play well last week against Troy. Against Troy, they were struggling that. Now, a week after an emotional win over Kansas in the border war, but they benefited from punt return, two short fields. Missouri doesn't have Ahmad Hardy right now, and that's a problem. Jamal Roberts has been okay, yes, but they don't have their real guy at this point. Mississippi State is favored by 5.5. I think Mississippi State kind of announces like, hey, we're here. I love the changes on defense. Our quarterback is outstanding, Kamario Taylor. I like Mississippi State in this game. I think that they win this one 27-17, and they cover the 5.5 at home. Again, emotional night. I think that they're going to be rowdy and ready to go. It's back. We're back. This is kind of back to those Dan Mullen, Dak Prescott. Do you remember, guys, the very first college football playoff rankings ever put out? Ever. In what was that, 14? Had to be 14. Mississippi State. You're going to get a little feel of that. I think that Arch gets it done late, but give me the 4.5 for Tennessee. I think Michigan wins on this game with Iowa, but I'm going to take the 5.5 there. That's a close game. I've got like 13-10. I hate this pick. I would fade this if I were you, but I have to to stay intellectually honest. I love Trinidad Chambliss. Here we go again. Hate this. Ole Miss wins as a dog against Florida. Hate it. Fade it, but that's what we're going to do. We're going to live with that one. Georgia wins big over Oklahoma. They're covering the 13.5. USC, they cover the 3.5. I think Oregon wins close, so Georgia has that win. LSU wins. They cover the 8.5 over A&M. A&M can't play offense. And Mississippi State, you're going to want more cowbell in the track.
