College Football Week 3 Picks: Will Lane Kiffin & LSU win in his return to Ole Miss?

Florida State is in a panic right now panic freefall doesn't look good Mississippi State might be better than we all realize in fact they are better than we all realize and They're certainly better than the AP voters realize nobody knows all miss better than Lane Kiffon He knows where all the skeletons are buried in the game plans Hey, welcome in to the program. I hopefully got a little heat on the sheet We got it going a little bit last week not a great opening week But last week we were three and two against the spread so now we're 500 for the year now as we the hope is the hope Is that as we learn more about these teams? We get a little bit better, right? So last week three and two so here we go. I've got six games that I'm going to pick of all all also quickly preview the game That I'll be at I'll be in Columbus on Saturday a book eyes face Kent State their first time on the field Obviously since that loss and a disastrous one in terms of that Epic collapse in the fourth quarter last week against Texas some things to watch out for in that game if you're a Buckeye fan and you're listening I think they want to try to establish who is the second option behind Jeremiah Smith, right? That's something to watch for in particular in this game What guy can make plays consistently so what guy can Julian saying trust because what we saw in the second half Against Texas is that there were guys open and you could tell Julian was hesitant to go that direction and he forced the ball to Jeremiah Smith so the trust between saying and whoever develops as kind of the number two option at Ohio State that's going to be big and that's where A game like this comes in a huge and then defensively here's all I would say is that map patricia is a smart guy And he's going to build a structure that he feels like is suited to the players that he has and I think that that's a learning process that is Still ongoing so that's something I'll be watching where does he play some of these guys on defense? What structures do they play and what can they really rely on when push comes to shove and one thing one thing that you're gonna Absolutely see they're gonna try to play ball control offense, right? I mean all those snaps the volume of snaps in the fourth quarter in the heat against Texas really took its toll on them So that's the game that I'll be at a big noon Saturday Gus Ginny and I on the call in the shoe Let's get to some of these other games monster game in the SEC as LSU is on the road at Ole Miss and no one's thinking about LSU on the road at Ole Miss. It's just Kiffin's return Kiffin is going back and this is going to be Bunkers and while the atmosphere is gonna be crazy outside of that Here's the thing guys nobody knows Ole Miss better than Lane Kiffin So as much as you're gonna hear like I don't know if they can overcome this man This is gonna be too difficult to overcome. I actually believe in my heart of hearts that LSU has a massive advantage in this game nobody knows Everything about Ole Miss more so than Lane Kiffin. He knows Pete Golding He knows the structures that Pete's gonna struggle with on the defensive side. He knows Chambliss better than the Ole Miss coaching staff knows Chambliss like that's a massive advantage He knows where all the skeletons are buried in the game plans and when he has that Nobody builds better game plans to take advantage of those types of scenarios. No one does it better than Lane Kiffin so like I Get it people could be like can they really go in there and win? Yeah, I think that they can and the reason is because schematically on the field and game plan wise LSU has a giant advantage in this game and no one's gonna talk about it that way No, no one Kiffin is a master at designing plays getting guys open You don't think that he's gonna have something that is specifically designed for a Pete Golding defense in the first five plays He's gonna want to try to take the crowd right out of it right away He knows what they're gonna try to do. He knows the blitzes that Pete likes to run He knows what hurts those blitzes. He knows the weakness of every single thing that Pete's gonna try to do on defense You don't think that's an advantage for Lane Kiffin. I think it's a massive advantage for Lane Kiffin Now the question becomes on the field what version of Sam Levitt do we get well version? Do we get the version that we saw against Clemson who was electric through the ball well? But most importantly ran the ball effectively explosive out of the backfield as a quarterback Or do we get the guy that turned it over three times against La Tech right if he can if he can avoid the turnovers Then LSU is obviously gonna be in a great spot Meanwhile, you've got Shambles on the other side and listen man. I love Trinidad Shambles this guy I kept saying it what didn't I say this? I think I said it after the Louisville game If you gave me one series and you said you had to score It's two minutes. You're down six. You've got to go put the ball in the end zone I think in all of college football. I think I would take Trinidad Shambles because he gives you so much He can go above the X's and O's when the defense is right. He can still make them wrong He's got a great arm You know he's a great leader because of everything that he did last year after Lane left them in the dust and and went to Baton Rouge He kept that locker room together along with Pete Golding, but like he did he's the leader. He's the captain I can't say enough positive things about Trinidad Shambles Here's the problem nobody knows him better than Lane Kiffin nobody nobody you can even look there and you know like John David Baker is OC does John David Baker no Trinidad Shambles better than Lane Kiffin the answer is no The answer is no so he's gonna know exactly what Trinidad likes because remember every one of these games last year that he went out They're and started for Lane guess what Lane likes to do and I've been in these meetings Lane is as open a book as anybody I've sit I've sat sat In his Friday meetings. I remember at Oklahoma. He brought FAU into Oklahoma He took FAU to Ohio State called both of those games and I'm afraid it Friday I was in the hotel for production meetings and he was like hey Do you want to be part of our meetings like come on in to our coaches meeting now granted it was awkward But Lane is gonna be Lane so I would go in there and I I saw him Essentially submit to what his quarterback liked and didn't like so he's done that with Chambles You you don't think he knows what Chambles likes what he struggles with massive advantage for LSU in that regard massive I do know what I'm gonna get from Chambles I think Lane knows what he's gonna get from Chambles and because of that look for a defensive structure From Baker and that LSU defense that is gonna try to force Chambles to beat him from the pocket Not allow him to get outside to play that that explosive style of football that he is so capable of playing because that's where he can really hurt you That's where he hurt Louisville. They've got a lot of speed on the outside. There's no doubt They have not gotten Kiwan Lacey going a little bit. I know Lane's gonna be ready for that He knows exactly how to how to stop that And listen that defense for LSU. I think that's actually probably the strength of the team I know everyone's gonna talk about Lane and love it and and all this I think the defense is exceptional for LSU They've got dudes umen Mielin the Ole Miss transfer he leads college football with five sacks with weeks a lot of talent I think LSU actually goes in and wins the game. We've seen them knock off big opponents Did you see them done it on the road went down and beat Miami a year ago. This is a monster monster game I think the winner of this game ultimately plays Miami for the ACC championship two great quarterbacks And one that we knew about very experienced Kevin Jennings who's kind of a chambeless light at SMU And then how about Lincoln keenholds who transfers in from Ohio State and has been outstanding for Brahms and Louisville In fact, these two guys are one and two in the country right now in total offense per game Jennings is averaging over 400 Keenholds at three seventy five. I love this one. I really do and I think Louisville learned a lot about themself in that Ole Miss game They almost knocked Ole Miss off. That's a good football team Louisville. But I think SMU is also Incredibly talented the game against Florida State was way closer than it should have been and it was all turnovers And that's the only thing that scares me about SMU because there's one thing that that Kevin Jennings struggles with and it's turnovers It's a decision here or there. I witnessed it firsthand in the holiday they played great in the first half he comes out in the second half and through a couple of inexplicable picks in that game and allowed Arizona to come back. Now they ultimately won the game but it was kind of like where did that throw come from and even retlashley and I talked about that he was like yeah I just like I don't know we got to knock that off there was a few of those turnovers against Florida State the only reason Florida states in that game. If they can play clean and I know it's a big if I know it's a big if but he's so experienced I think that they're better and more talented than Louisville and that's a good Louisville team. I just think that SMU and retlashley have something you look at what they've done against the ACC over the last couple of years. I believe they're 15 and two against the ACC in the last couple of years. I'm concerned about what I saw from Louisville's defense in that game against Ole Miss they gave up 38 points in that game and so what am I going to go. I've got to take the dog in this one I know listen they're on the road I get it I get it but I just if Jennings stays clean SMU wins the game outright I'm getting two and a half I've got to take it I think that they win the game outright 31 27 and what's going to be an amazing game retlashley and SMU put themselves in a driver's seat to potentially go and play for an ACC championship. Good one on Friday night on Fox by the way a big 12 kind of tilt ranked match up in the big 12 is Houston goes to Texas Tech Houston's 22 in the country Texas Tech 13 in the country tech is favored by 7 and a half. Listen these these weeknight games really tough to win on the road as as a weeknight road opponent. The environment tends to be just a little bit different a little bit more electric and in this one Houston is is the less talented team. So you're telling me that I can have a great environment behind the more talented team I get that seven and a half. I want to lay those seven and a half. I really do joy McGuire is an excellent coach and here's the one thing that I do know about joy McGuire is he's going to look at his first two games with this tech team and he's going to realize they were unconvincing and he can coach him hard this week. I didn't think they looked great in either of their two games Abelene Christian and Oregon State in fact both of these teams Houston also played Oregon State both of these teams got lit up through the air by Oregon State gave up a ton of passing yards. Meanwhile for Houston, Willie Fritz has done an excellent job. I like their quarterback Connor Weigman. Mackay Hughes is a huge add to their run game. Remember he was with Fritz I think back at two lane. Then Hughes went to Oregon and then transferred back and now he's back with Fritz but his third school now at Houston and then Amari Thomas is one of the best receivers in the big 12. There's just something about this Texas tech and their talent and what they think that they can be and now they get a big 12 games. So we're done with the preseason. It's kind of like preseason and regular season for Texas tech. This is a team that on paper is one of the more talented teams in the country. They replenish the defensive side of the football. They've got some stuff on offense and Joey is a heck of a coach and now they've got that atmosphere on a Friday night again on Fox. Make sure to tune in tune in. I like tech to cover. They've got seven they've given seven and a half. I think they went at 3423. Yeah, I like that. Tech to win big environment on Friday night. How about Florida State at Alabama? Florida State is in a panic right now. Panic. Freeful. Doesn't look good. Their program is is athletic department is massively in debt. They just fired their athletic director. It's the same athletic director that gave Mike Norvell is huge contract extension a couple of years ago. You look at the rest of their schedule and they've got banger after banger. It's like, I don't see how he gets past the Miami game. I really don't. And meanwhile, Alabama, I feel like something clicked last week against Kentucky. Now, I know Bama fans were were a bit anxious in that first half. Russell throws the pick six. You know, can't run the football again. And it's like, oh my gosh, are we really going to be in a game with Kentucky? But if you step back and you actually look at that game, what did you notice about this Bama team? Their defense is dominant. Defense didn't really give up much at all to Wellstein's group and Kentucky. And then something happened in that second half. Ryan Grubb stuck to the run game. Kalen DeBoer ran the football. And they they ran it for over six a carry and 150 yards in an SEC game on the road. They buried Kentucky in the second half. To me, that's a moment. You see, there are times as a team when you work really hard and you're emphasizing certain things and it just doesn't materialize on the field. But when it does materialize on the field, that that is a huge moment for the confidence of your team and more specifically for the confidence of a young quarterback. Kalen Russell now doesn't have to be Superman. He doesn't. And maybe he was trying to be that at times. But now he knows like, okay, hold on. I can just orchestrate the offense. I can run the offense. I know my defense is terrific. Maybe we can run the football a little bit. And now his ability can be showcased. Now he can throw. He's a very clean quarterback. I like what I see from him. He's explosive as a runner. He can throw the ball while he throws it accurately. Like I like everything about Kalen Russell. And now you get the Florida State team in here. They're on a bit of a free fall right now. The only reason that gaming against SMU was close was the turnovers and the mistakes that SMU made. The only reason SMU should have beat him by 20, 24 in that game. And FSU struggles to throw it. They're not going to be able to run the football against that defense. You might be thinking to yourself like, well, couldn't they just have a little bit of a letdown. They win an SEC game. Bam off. I'm speaking of and now Florida State comes to town in a free fall. Couldn't they kind of sleepwalk? No. They lost to Florida State last year. You don't think they're going to be motivated? I think they're going to be motivated. I know 19 and a half is a big number. Give them give them 19 and a half. Bama wins this one 38 10. They cover the 19 and a half. I think that one's an easy one for me. I think that again, they unlock some things in that run game. Another good one in the SEC Florida at Auburn, Florida is favored by two and a half in this one on the road. Couple of new coaches, guys are trying to rebuild their program. John Summeral brought in Buster Falkner as his OC. He was at Georgia Tech. And then they brought in Aaron Filo, a quarterback who has been pretty good. Summeral did a really nice job of keeping and retaining some of the talent that Florida had. I think Namely, Namely, Jaden Baw. So clearly they've got some buy in there. So there were some recruits and some guys there that stuck with Florida. And that's a credit to John Summeral. Meanwhile, Alex Goulish on the other side, he's trying to have a similar rebuild with Auburn. He brought in his quarterback, Byron Brown from South Florida. Auburn played Baylor in week one. That was a really good game. Baylor had a two point play to try to win the game. Auburn stops some great goal line stand right there in terms of a two point play. But here's what scares me about Auburn is that their offensive line in that game against Baylor did not protect very well. Brown was sack five times. So like, do we think that Florida is going to have a better front seven than Baylor? And my answer would be yes. Now, they haven't lit it up from a stat sheet perspective. But this is just going to be me banking on the fact that John Summeral kept the talent there and they're going to be able to get after the quarterback. So in my estimation, even on the road, I know Jordan Harris a tough place to play. I think Florida is a more talented team. I think it's, it's an easier rebuild for Summeral than it is Goulish because Auburn has been in like, I mean, it's been turnover after turnover there. And maybe you could say the same about Florida. And that makes it a bit of a hard game to pick. But I'm going to say Florida covers the two and a half. And they win this one 20 to 17 at Jordan hair. So, you know, I'm going to give the two and a half. And I'm going to go with John Summeral and Florida. And I think they get a huge SEC win on the road. Another SEC game, Mississippi State at South Carolina. The reason I want to talk about this is that South Carolina is favored by three and a half. And I don't understand it. This is a great quarterback matchup. First of all, you've got LaNora Sellas for sellers for South Carolina. He could be a star, I think he's got that talent. But then you've got like the real breakout star. And I talked about this yesterday. He's a guy I'm so excited about. Camario Taylor. Camario Taylor is huge. He's 230 pounds. He's over 63. He's got a cannon for an arm. They just hammered Minnesota on the road. I know they've got to go right back on the road. And typically teams don't play great and back-to-back road games. But that was a confidence builder for them going on the road, playing a tough gritty Minnesota team. Their defense didn't give up an offensive touchdown. Taylor was sensational. Like Mississippi State might be better than we all realize. In fact, they are better than we all realize. And they're certainly better than the AP voters realize. They should be a ranked team at this point. Based on what they do, you put any other uniform on them. And they are ranked right now. Again, the AP poll continues to prove why we should disregard it always, always. And one of those facts is that Mississippi State is not ranked. Now South Carolina, they played Kent State and an FCS team. So we don't really know what they are yet. I expect and kind of want a shootout in this game. I think it would be fun. I would be I think it would be awesome to watch Camario Taylor and sellers kind of go after in the back and forth game. Again, it's tough to win on the on the road back-to-back. But I'm going to take the three and a half because I feel like Mississippi State is underrated. I think they're better than South Carolina. I've got them winning outright on the road 3430. So I'm going to take those three and a half right there with Mississippi State. Let's recap those picks as we have. And we got six picks this week. We we went deep on the picks this week. I've got LSU winning that game on the road. I'm going to give the two and a half overall miss. SMU is a dog on the road. I'm going to take the two and a half. I think they win outright. Tech at home on a Friday night. I'll give the seven and a half over Houston. I think that they get right. Bama should win big over Florida State. Florida State's in a free fall. That's a panic right now for Florida State. Coaches wondering where their realtor is and so on and so forth. Bama unlocked the run game. I'm going to give the 19 and a half and go with the tide. Florida. I'm going to give the two and a half. I think they win on the road at Auburn. Now, listen, you could talk me into going opposite of that, but I'm going to stick with Florida. I like John Summer all a lot. And then Mississippi State. I think they're one of the more underrated programs right now in college football. And Camario Taylor might be the most underrated player in college football. I'm getting three and a half against South Carolina. I'll take it. I'll take it. I'll take it.
