College Football Chaos with Mike Ryan Ruiz, FPI Madness & A Raiders Reality Check
58m 19s
The transcript blends a film review of *The Mosquito Bowl*, a story of four football players who enlisted in the Marines after Pearl Harbor, with an in-depth analysis of the NFL’s Week 6 games. The host critiques the current state of NFL kicking, emphasizing the overreliance on a single, highly skilled kicker like Harrison Mevis, despite the existence of many capable alternatives. He argues that the quality and consistency of kickers have improved dramatically, especially when compared to past decades, and questions the elitism in the position. The discussion also includes fan picks for key matchups, such as the Cowboys-Packers game and the Texans-Jaguars London clash, with debates on defensive strength and team momentum. In college football, the host highlights Indiana’s rising strength and the potential for a pivotal Miami-Notre Dame showdown in the national championship picture. He also critiques the college football FPI rankings, arguing they reward teams for playing strong opponents rather than reflecting true performance. The segment concludes with a broader commentary on fairness in sports, especially in how talent and opportunity are distributed, and calls for more balanced, transparent systems in both professional and college football.
The Mosquito Bowl is the incredible true story of four college football stars who
walked away from NFL careers after Pearl Harbor to enlist in the Marines. From
Friday Night Lights director Peter Berg and starring Nicholas Gallatin, Bill
Skarsgård, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis comes a story of brotherhood and
sacrifice. Four men who traded the gridiron for the battlefield. The Mosquito
Bowl in theaters October 30th. My fellow football Americans I come to you at a
critical moment and I don't just mean for my head after another do-it-myself
haircut. We may be living in the last days of the Buck Eggman broadcast booth.
Let's make the most of it shall we? For them. Also we do happen to have some big
NFL week six games to go over. Where better to settle some AFC South hash than
the UK. The Texans got up the schneid last week but now need a win against the
London Jaguars if they still want to win.
I want to have a shot at winning the division. Got the Micah Parsons Bowl in
Lambeau. The Cleveland Browns are playing the Cleveland Browns. One of them
cleverly disguised as purple birds. The Eagles are desperate so the Panthers
coming to town off a bye no less is kind of scary right? Saturday's got the
Heisman frontrunner visiting the defending national champions in
Bloomington while the Catholic crew from Indiana is visiting Mormon country. It's
time to destroy all the stale narratives like we're Kelly Clarkson in a Brooklyn
tchotchke shop. Before we dig into what's going on in the NFL, let's take a look at
what's going on in the NFL.
Week six though, it's getting chilly in here. Oh, that's what it is. It's presented
by Jägermeister. Serve it cold or don't serve it at all. Jägermeister, damn that's
cold for more. Visit Jägermeister.com, drink responsibly. What a year it's been for kicking
right? World Cup and summertime giving way to pro football kickers regularly now making
60 yarders this autumn. That said, my strict no-jive policy does require me to point out
this week has been a rough one in kicking related news. Hollywood celebrity Selma Blair
got arrested.
A few days ago for kicking a nurse on a plane and then a man of a certain carriage named
Harrison Mevis chunked it up in more ways than one in the Rams Monday night football
loss. Let's set Selma aside and focus on Mevis. Poor fella is out now replaced by Blake
Groupie. So I hate to kick a kicker when he's down. And to be fair, it's not Harrison Mevis
his fault. He's Harrison Mevis. It's Sean McVay's fault for employing a guy who can't
reach the crossbar from 50. Kicking is rangy these days. And I don't just mean that as
an evaluation of distance.
I mean, kicker swinging games and seasons is nothing new this millennium. Harbaugh's
Ravens run a playoff relevance hinged to an outsized degree on Justin Tucker. And while
I don't know whatever happened to that particular class act, the kickers of this era are just
playing better than their forefathers. They're not just regularly making them from greater
distances. They're more accurate than they used to be. And they're not just playing better
than they've ever been before.
Dig, 8 of the top 10 most accurate guys ever are in the league right now. Kids, trust me,
the quality of kicking has not always been so strong, which is strange considering it's
a sport with the word foot in it. In the 60s, kicking was done head on by position players
in square-toed shoes. My favorite example, the original golden boy Paul Hornig of the
Packers, Heisman winner, NFL MVP, run, catch, throw, he could do it all. Except for kicking,
which was his come to Jesus.
Or come to touchdown Jesus. In fact, in 1964, Vince Lombardi had Hornig try 38 field goals.
Hornig made 12, coincidentally or otherwise. 1964 was Hornig's last year as the Packers
kicker. Then in the 70s, the European sidewinders arrived. Tiny imports with hard-to-spell surnames.
And as Garo Yapremian highlighted in Super Bowl VII, they had never used their hands,
any of them. They were completely unfamiliar with them. In the 80s, things got even weirder.
When some dorks took off one shoe,
and one sock, presumably from the same side, to do it barefoot. That's not okay on the airplane,
and that's not okay on the football field. These barefoot advocates said it gave them a better
feel. But my question was always, wasn't any advantage gained offset when it got chilly outside?
Shame the devil if it snowed. Now though, the quality of your kicker can and does provide a
massive edge. And yes, most of them literally outkicked the game's intended strategies.
So we need to raise the standard and make it a little harder.
That's why I've proposed completing the rectangle by putting a crossbar across the top to connect the
goalposts. Or maybe position players should have to go back to doing it. Or maybe we should force
them to go back to head-on kicks like God intended. Ooh wait, head-on barefoot kickers. Or maybe this
is the best idea of all. We replicate Mivas 32 times over. Think about it. While you do, let's start the show.
Yes, hi and hello my fellow football Americans. Welcome to NFL Week 6. Welcome to Football America
presented by DraftKings Sports. Available in 50 states. Which, if my math is correct, that's all
of them. Welcome to episode 91. We have much to talk about. Real quick though, let's take a little
bit. We just talked about Mivas a little there, so let's finish off the Monday night football game
because it was a grand one. We're going to talk about Mivas 32 times over. Think about it. While you
How are you Gino Fuentes? Joined down in Miami behind the glass by 10-Day Tony. Tony Kaladeud.
Make sure you're checking out his sub stack. 10daytony.substack.com. Is that right? That's it.
That's it baby. Check it out. And then, wouldn't you know it, he's showing his face once again to
the world. It's Buddy Badowski. Gino, what a game on Monday night, right? That was football crack
everybody. That was the best game of the year. The second half was the best game of the year.
I think it was six straight touchdowns before we got to overtime. I didn't want it to end. When they
were blocking field goals and stuff in overtime, I was like, yeah, let's end it a tie. I don't care.
This is great. I want to play it all the way to the end. It does sort of put the Rams in a tough
spot though. You know, they really do. I predicted before that game that they were about to go on a
run. I still think they have a shot to win the next three here, but nevertheless, that was a
that was a bad loss. And like I said there, Tony, it's really weird. What is the math on Sean McVay
the apparent genius in every other way doing on purpose running Meevis out there? It's not like
there aren't 32 human beings that can kick the ball through the post better than that cat, right?
Yeah. And I was listening to the post game press conference for Sean. He was saying like, yeah,
we got it. I got to be better there. We're going to take a long look at what we got going on in
special teams. And that's the, that was Monday night. So I started looking, I was like, man,
is Meevis going to be around? And then wouldn't you know it, like the ax fell down guillotine out
and it is odd for a guy to be around.
It is odd for a guy who's so sharp on basically every facet of the game and every facet of who
he's got on his team that place kicker such an important role is kind of left to chance.
It's so strange. I mean, I said 15 years ago, how is it possible in a world of 8 billion people
that we can't find 32 human beings to play halfway decent QB, but it then transferred at some point
because I think we're okay at QB. We're worse off at kicker because of the vast range. Like I say,
between the best and Meevis, what are we doing? We are not doing bad at kicker. We are just so
elitist at this point that if you're a 95, if you miss anything, if you can't reach the goalpost
from 50 yards, like the big fat guy out in LA couldn't, then that's, then you're terrible.
You're the worst kicker of all time. It's crazy where we've gotten with kicking, isn't it?
Yes. That, well, that's the point. When, when you see 20 guys, at least out there making them from
55 and doing it regularly, it's a weird thing to do. It's a weird thing to do. It's a weird thing
to give up, to not investigate. We have, we, uh, have we turned over every stone and it's not just
in the U S you can get soccer players from everywhere. I mean, they ever been, uh, you ever
see that at my high school, I remember the soccer guys would come up after practice and they would
walk through the football field and they would stop off and kick field goals. And every random
high school soccer player was good. Could make 45 yarders with the greatest of ease. And that
was forever ago in the year of the Lord, 2026, it cannot be that hard that you have to throw a fat
guy named Meevis out under the field, especially when you're Sean McVay and considered to be one of
the great rosters of all time. Yeah. Except for the fat guy, you have kick in the ball, but anyway,
group a in and a goodbye to Meevis. We'll miss you. Let's get into it now. Shall we? Oh,
before we do, we have Mike Ryan coming up. It's a big week in college football and we have to make
our picks, but Gino it's episode number 91. What player wore that uniform number best?
Well, we got a loaded number here. Surprisingly, it's all defensive ends and defensive tackles. We
got Fletcher Cox. We got Justin Tuck. Uh, present day we have Trey Hendrickson. Uh, if you want to go
NHL, I don't want to steal buddy's thunder here. Go ahead, buddy. Yeah. I mean, Sergey Fedorov,
Dave and Steven Samkos, but the one I'm looking at on the list here that you missed, you know,
it's cam wake. Yeah. How much fun can we get to him when I was coming of age? Like that was
the guy for the dolphins was at least we could fall back on. We had cam wake and, and remember
that one where him and a Dominican Sue crunched the jets quarterback. It was like a, it was either
a Thursday night or a Monday night game.
And they just crunched them. And I was like, God, we have a defense like in Dominican Sue and can't
wake into the quarterback real quick. We do have one NBA notable. And of course, Dennis Rodman,
the worm. Yeah, that's right. Um, Fedorov, I have to say just roughly, I don't have my proper list,
but he's gotta be comfortably in my top 10 best players I've ever watched in the NHL. All right,
let's get to picks, picks, picks as we jump into NFL week six, and then we'll do a little college
football at the end. Like I say, with Mike,
where do we stand right now in our enduring? Um, we, we pick one favorite every week.
an over under and an underdog that we like on behalf of draft king sports buddy where are the
standings so far this year so we've got an interesting thing that we have to deal with
here because tony was out last week and so are we just gonna give tony are we just gonna give
tony a big fat zero i get i get one one and a half i think why for that no just cuz you know
has he been at 50 till that point tony was had five points going into that week so five of 12
so five or five of five of 12 yeah we make three picks every week in four weeks so far so you had
five points anyway okay last week davo you nailed it you were three and oh last week you had the
texans minus seven and a half you had the lions and cardinals over 54 and a half you had the
you had the ravens plus three and a half as an underdog i told you i'm like i'm like neo in the
matrix or his girlfriend up on the roof when she can't fly the helicopter like she doesn't know
when she walks out there that's like me walking in the football season but then it's like well
let me let me just uh ingest some information like she did like
now it's october dave's ready to roll i i don't imagine i'm gonna miss many if any picks the rest
of the way it took you some time to get rolling gino got rolling as well he went two and a half
and one off an oh and three week he nailed the giants plus three and a half the dolphins
crunch we don't have time to read everybody's individual sorry gino went two and one and then
it was a bad week for your boy i went oh and three so dave you have now taken the lead on the season
you have eight points i have seven gino's got six and tony will figure out what to do with you
eventually you've got five points right now running up the back so tony you're gonna have to make up
for it maybe gino's out a week or i'm out a week or something so we'll figure it out as the season
goes on
all right here's what i'll start us off with our favorite for this week it's a giant number i have
advocated for the last uh three years to avoid any double digit favorite in the nfl i have updated
that as i always say outdated narratives need to be pushed aside in favor of what's fresh
and as it turns out the last three years double digit favorites in the nfl have covered it at
about a 60 percent rate and better than what it was three years ago
it was i think it was like 57 percent in the last two years it's been over 60 anyway i'm taking the
rams in the spot that they have to have it 12 and a half is a giant number and yet i'm going to roll
with that one against the bum cardinals the rams understand the situation and i do think that
after that that bummer of a monday night i think they show up and take care of business against
arizona tony how say you i'm going to take the carolina panthers as my favorite small right now
the news just uh broke a little while ago when we were recording this that jalen hertz was out
so i'm going to take carolina minus one and a half i like wow listen that number like you say is is
going to change before sunday quite a bit there and you know we've it's been a conversation that
we've been having you and me tony specifically about those panthers the defense is good bryce
something about a good team off off on a buy we don't want to buy them and we do want to buy the
eagles but man i could absolutely buy the eagles i'm going to take carolina minus one and a half
the panthers really um given the the eagles another gut punch in a series of gut punches
gino how say you i'm going to go ahead and take the stealers here um i think the dallas cowboys
defense was just that bad uh against the undrafted rookie quarterback for the the bucks uh and your
boy aaron rogers has thrown nine touchdowns in three games dave so i think two and a half points
is easy enough to overcome great episode earlier in the week we talked to todd haley and jared
bailey about aaron rogers and jared bailey and jared bailey about aaron rogers and jared bailey
i mean to me it just seems pretty straightforward the three wins that they have or in fact the three
bad defenses in this run that aaron rogers has had of throwing three touchdown passes
three weeks in a row you know bottom bottom third in pass rush win rate and the two teams that they
that aaron rogers has not done well against are in the top 10 in pass rush win where they look at
where the bucks are 10th right now so we'll see what happens i do think jaylen daniels another
week of film now for the steve
healers to study probably slows him down a little bit but i wouldn't be surprised if he runs around
on them a little bit um buddy how say you i'm gonna take the bears minus one and a half at
the falcons all signs point to caleb williams returning this week which will obviously be a
huge boost for the bears offense they were fine without them i mean they won two of the games
obviously they had to stinker against green bay last week and i'm just still not a huge believer
in what the falcons are doing quite yet especially if michael pennix is either going to be hobbled
or not playing in this game
and they have to turn to tua or even worse options uh back there so give me the bears
minus one and a half in atlanta one uniform note back to geno's pick the steelers are going to be
forced to wear their black jerseys i understand because it's still sort of warm in tampa and so
advantage buccaneers i think i don't know if that really has any impact on anything my total that
intrigues me this week the jets and pats both have top six scoring defenses ergo under 43 and a half
uh buddy how say you i'm gonna go back to tampa as well and i'm going to take the steelers and
buccaneers over 39 and a half both these teams have gone over this number in three of their
five games the steelers have scored 24 plus in three straight games give me that total i know
it's really low and it's really kind of scary but give me the steelers and bucks over 39 and a half
i was that numbers dropped actually over the course of the week um i was really looking at
going under on that one uh tony
how say you i'm gonna take atlanta chicago over the return of caleb williams last time that he was
uh not in a monsoon they scored 60 points falcons i think are on the track of getting
better offensively i think panics is still a bit dominant on drake london as as his main target
but i like that uh 51 and a half i'm gonna say that's gonna be a 60 plus uh point total there
so i'm gonna go over gina uh the rams and cardinals are at 51 and a half i'm gonna go over i
think the rams can get them there themselves but if they don't um jacoby brissett loves some garbage
time they he eats it all up right at the end of the game he won me a fantasy week last week
so um i'm gonna go over on rams and cardinals my dog i'm taking the falcons at home against
the aforementioned bears how about that one tony how's your response to that i i don't i don't hate
that uh whatsoever uh i'm gonna take the commies plus seven and a half against the uh against the
49ers on monday night i think with the embarrassment and
uh i'm gonna take the 49ers on monday night i think with the embarrassment and
everybody zeroing in on dan quinn and his job and jaden daniels and his decision making they're
gonna get back stefan diggs i don't think they win but i think they keep it close give me a
touchdown and a half for the commies buddy quick uh i'm gonna take the giants plus one and a half
against the saints i'm done picking the saints i've done it too many times
yeah the jets burned me one too many times and then they go out there and uh take care of
business gina i'm with buddy on this one i'm taking the giants jamis is dealing he's gonna be
alone at the top of the division because jalen hurts as we said is out and so i don't think the
eagles can survive that so all right there you go there's your picks picks picks for the week
moving on then we're looking for the team as we move on to little caesars let me make sure i have
it i'm holding it right oh wow look at that box little caesars yes i made that box i know about
little caesars and we're looking right now for the team or teams who we reckon will have the
we can help out anybody still in their survivor pool anybody who enjoys a nice blowout it's time
for stress-free sunday delivered as i say by little caesars the official pizza sponsor of the nfl right
now score two faves just for you with detroit style slices and sticks for only four dollars
99 cents only at little caesars officially delicious i should mention because i'm vain
30 in one on the year and spiritually i'm really 4-0 because when i picked again when i picked the
whip the chargers they kind of sort of did it ended up landing right on the number this week
i'm going with the colts as they say and i don't know who they are but the colt laying seven to the
titans um and if you like them to win outright like them up to seven that's where the number is
i'm taking the indianapolis colts here after their loss to the steelers on the banks of the
three rivers um last week i'm gonna stay away from the panthers and eagles and like i said
say i really don't have a feel for jay jaylen daniels against the steelers defense those are
my two uh stay aways um in terms of feeling uh feeling strongly about the outcome there so let's
move on shall we to the three most important games ever of the week and if you can only watch
three games on sunday these are those at number three bills raiders vegas i don't look i can't
call them vegas i i like calling the raiders oakland
but i can't call them vegas and that's a missed i i miss being able to do that either way
the raiders are plus five and a half total is 53 and a half afl afl style shootout upcoming here i
think the bills stuck around the west coast after the rams game to reduce the travel a little bit
um the raiders are now despite the early season pass rush bottom third against the past the bills
are real efficient at throwing it around and the guy who does that throwing primarily as it happens
runs it around real good too i'm gonna take the bills to cover this one tony how say you i like
that too
Raiders have been an interesting team this year
where defensively they had some really good moments,
and then offensively, Kirk Cousins throwing 12 touchdowns.
I just don't think they have enough firepower offensively
to keep up with Josh Allen.
Even though we saw Josh Allen throw the ball 19 times against the Rams,
they really choked him out in the middle of the field.
So I thought that was an interesting little ploy.
Bills' defense in their secondary, still not good enough to be where
I think the Bills should be, but I'm going to take the Bills here too.
Buddy.
Yeah, I think the free fall for the Raiders back down to earth,
kind of back down, I still think they're better than we thought
they were going to be coming into the year,
but they were never the team that was 3-0 at the beginning of the season,
and I think we kind of saw that completed last week against the Patriots.
The Bills are rolling.
Whatever you want to say about them with the defensive issues
and a bounce goes their way last game.
They're going to really very easily be the losers of two straight.
Absolutely, 100%, and like I said, the bounces go their way, right?
They block a kick.
They run the fat guy out there, and they block a kick.
Sean McVay all of a sudden doesn't act like Sean McVay,
doesn't really try and kill off the game,
and the Bills end up with a win last week.
But I just think they're too much for the Raiders.
Give me the Bills, 34-21.
Gina.
Well, I'm going to take the Bills here at 35-21, but real quick,
I want to point out something about Brock Bowers.
Tony brought this up before that they're pretty much using him as a wide receiver.
In terms of fantasy scoring,
if you made him, let's go PPR here.
If you made him a wide receiver, he'd be the wide receiver four.
Actually, the wide receiver three.
If you made him a running back, he'd be the running back four.
If you made him a QB, he'd be the QB seven if you want to do super flex.
He is a monster.
He might score all three of those touchdowns that I just said.
Genting might be out.
That might even mean more Brock Bowers.
He's fun to watch, man.
That being said, Bills win, 35-21.
By the way, I didn't give you my score.
28-21 as well.
I have the Bills winning that one in Vegas.
It matters with the Raiders if you buy them or the West not already belonging to the Chiefs at this point.
The Chiefs have a chance to really, I mean, if the Chargers aren't finished already,
then they have a chance to really, really, really finish the Chargers.
Laying eight and a half in Arrowhead, 42 and a half is the total.
It's funny.
Another thing that I have sort of abided by,
even in the dynastic,
run of the Chiefs is at Arrowhead,
they haven't necessarily had a great knack of covering at home.
And the thing everybody does talk about a lot
is that Andy Reid is 22-5 coming off the bye.
He's lost two of the last three.
And they haven't really been great at covering at home the last couple of years.
They're 2-5 when favored by seven or more the last two seasons.
All that being said, I'm going against those numbers.
I'm going to take it.
The old one, two, the old rope-a-dope.
I just wanted to give you all the information.
You do you.
At number two on the most important games ever of the week,
it's the Cowboys, it's the Packers, it's the Micah Parsons Bowl.
Micah will obviously be watching in street clothes.
You know the thing about the unstoppable force and the immovable object?
This isn't that.
America's legend team has the worst.
The worst rushing defense.
But the Packers are dead last in rushing the football.
Dallas has the better QB efficiency numbers.
And specifically on third down.
So Prescott moves the chains in big spots.
Dallas wins the shootout.
By the way, I should also note that the Cool Cats, my fantasy team,
traded DK Metcalf for George Pickens.
People love to hear about your fantasy teams.
I just did that one.
The Cowboys.
A mid-show trade.
Update for two former, for a Steelers receiver for a former Steelers receiver.
Okay, well I did it with, does it matter I did it with Jon Hamm?
Hollywood's Jon Hamm?
Okay, now you got me.
Hold on, now you got me.
You got George Pickens from Jon Hamm?
That's right.
Oh my gosh.
To go along with Dak Prescott.
DK Metcalf's been lost at sea for six months.
What are you talking about?
Well, I also have CeeDee Lamb and I have Dak Prescott.
Advantage damage.
Oh, just the triple stack.
Advantage Dallas here.
34-31.
Buddy, who's your pick here?
I'm going to go against you, Dave.
I'm going to take, you talked about stoppable forces and movable objects, right?
That Dallas defense is certainly a movable object.
And I think we saw the Packers offense break out in a big way last week against the Bears.
This game is in Lambeau.
Give me the Packers here.
I love what I'm seeing from Jordan Love, especially last game.
I think he'll just carve up that secondary for the Dallas Cowboys.
I'm going to take, in a shootout, in a close one, Packers 35-31.
I like that.
I like that Buddy said.
He thinks that the Chargers had a big offensive day.
Like, I think we all thought that.
They did have a big one there.
Tony, how's CeeDee?
I'm going to go echo everything that Buddy said.
The Dallas burn unit, that is the secondary of the Dallas Cowboys.
Derron Bland and everybody, third-degree burns all over the field.
Give me the tandem of Watson and Golden still running around the secondary.
By the way, DK Metcalf, former pal of Joey Porter Jr., he has an ankle injury.
After he had the back injury.
And then he got, he threw up on himself, apparently, last Thursday night.
So, we'll see whether or not, if Joey Porter ever wears the star on the side of his helmet on game day.
Gino, how say you?
Well, the Packers' solution to not being able to run the ball was to just stop running the ball.
Yeah.
And now they just bomb away on every single play.
Does anybody remember that Week 2 game from last year where Russell Wilson was just throwing deep ball after deep ball?
Yeah, against Dallas.
I think you could see a lot, a similar game this time around.
38-35 is my score.
Jordan Love and the Packers.
Come out on top.
All right.
And number one, let's travel across the Atlantic.
Big game in the AFC South in London Town.
The Jags stayed there.
I don't know how much that matters.
But, you know, a trip to the UK is not equivalent to a trip down under.
But, for what it's worth, Houston is making that trip this week.
And, like I say, Jacksonville has already been there for a matter of days.
If it is a factor, then I guess that is a strike against the Texans.
On the plus side, Marv Harrison Jr. is going to be out there for them.
The Jags' left tackle is out.
I'm pretty sure Anton Harrison ill-timed when you're going up against the Texans' pass rush.
But the time is always ill for a team that can't run the ball, and the Texans cannot do that.
Woody Marks is going to get all the totes this week.
Like we've been saying, though, the Jags' run defense and the defense in general is real good, specifically third against the run.
So, we can assume.
C.J. Stroud's going to have to win it.
He won't.
Jags, 24-18, Geno.
How say you?
I'm going to—that whole left tackle situation has me a bit perturbed.
I'm going to go 21-17, Houston, with a couple deep balls from C.J. Stroud to Marvin Harrison mixed in.
I think that—I think you nailed it, Dave.
I think the story is the Texans' inability to run the ball.
The Jags haven't allowed a 100-yard rusher in what feels like 600 years.
And forcing C.J. Stroud to have forced chemistry with Marvin Harrison Jr. after we haven't seen that for a long time is going to be tough.
I'm going to take the Jags.
And, Buddy?
I am going to go with the Texans here, Dave.
I just think this team needs this win so badly.
Like, they finally got off the schneid.
They got in the win column last week against the Titans.
And this team, they need it way more than the Jaguars.
And I just feel like if they get this win, it will really jumpstart their season.
Remember, they started 0-3 last year, still made the playoffs, and won a playoff game.
So, I think they'll kind of do something similar here.
And I think this is where they get off and really take off in their season.
Give me the Texans 23-20.
Wow.
You know, I know it's rudimentary sort of opining, but it is true.
When a team needs it in the NFL and the other kind of doesn't, the team that needs it tends to win.
I think the Jags understand.
I think the Jags understand what's at stake here and how they could put the Texans away right now in mid-October.
And I think they will do that.
All right.
You know what?
Their game's on Saturday in addition to the game's on Sunday.
Let's talk about some of those with one of our favorites, Mike Ryan.

contest availability varies by state all right he's the big star of kane's insight and an enduring
big straw stirring around the drink called the dan lebitard show in a pinch or in his own lane
it's our old pal mike ryan what's the poop fella how are you mike ryan in a pinch yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah yeah better than pat ryan remember pat ryan when he would back up uh ken o'brien in the
80s no no you know i don't know i don't you were a uh you were a brown fan yes you were a brown
fan way back when um pre-deshaun watson you know before we talk some college football which is what
i really want to dig in on with you isn't it i think it's one of the stories that we don't talk
nearly enough about there are only 32 nfl brands
and one of them resides in baltimore but we all know or should intellectually acknowledge that
they're in fact the cleveland browns and i don't know what that team is in cleveland but it ain't
the cleveland browns because they moved 20 years ago right yeah but they they they inherited all
the uh all the sadness and the misery and the losing and it was actually quite and it's the
and every all the principal players agreed that the history stays with cleveland um i i was young
but why but it's we i used to praise i used to say art modell the one nice thing he did
was leave the browns brand behind in cleveland but now with some distance from it it's super weird
because it like i say all the ass they left the helmets but they took ozzy newsom and everything
else they took ray lewis they took many other things to baltimore with them i think those are
more valuable you remember
when johnny unitas died and the ravens had a tribute to johnny unitas that one was wild
do you remember when the baltimore colts won the cfl no you don't remember this no in the 1990s
yes in the 1990s the cfl had american teams and the baltimore colts were were well were they the
colts or they were like the mustangs or they were a horse they were horse adjacent yeah they were
more stallions baltimore stallions right 1994 and 1995 seasons
they were stallions
the baltimore stallions i believe this is true won the great cup let me see yes in 95 they won
the great cup and their jerseys look just like the cowboys they were tapping into the colts
orlando too wasn't there in the cfl that that rings a bell either way i've said it before i'll
say it again the predators i understand the canadian football fans will be upset by this
but they'll have to get used to it they need to go and people will tell you oh no the canadian field
preceded the nfl field
the 55 yards and all that okay what's done is done we the nfl has won now you have to become
the minor league of the nfl cfl it'll be great it'll make you way more relevant all right let's
talk college football they are actually making more changes to make it more like america and
the canadians are pretty peeved i also we don't have time to get sidetracked again i do want to
talk drip drill in just a second football north america i think here's a bold here's a bold
statement i think the canadian football league's uniforms round about like 1978 might be the best
collection of football uniforms in the history of people but we don't have time for that we don't
now your miami hurricanes host a former relevant pro college football team the uh the the florida
state seminoles whereas my team the indiana hoosiers one of my two teams hosts um ohio state
let's dig in on both of those but i do want to let you know
i am rooting for i think for a miami notre dame national championship game how say you
i'm rooting for miami to be in the national championship game for sure i really care who
the opponent is although the that would miami notre dame because of the cfp storyline last year
this is one of the hottest rivalries in the sport right now and i i think that we're going to build
a crescendo to november 7th i anticipate both teams being undefeated that's what i hope for
because i want miami to go to the national championship game and i'm rooting for miami
and i think that we're going to build a crescendo to november 7th i think that we're going to build a
that miami schedule you play who you play right but you can certainly poke holes in miami schedule
though i'm a big believer in the deacons of mass destruction at wake forest i think they're running
a good program over there but i watch too much talk from you about the wake because that was
their only halfway wake is good team it's a good team wake is good have you been watching the deacs
or no dave i yes i've watched i've watched the deacs i have deacons but mike ryan trying to make
a case for how how good they are it's a right wind
with me i think it is loco that's really what i want to talk with you about is specifically the
fpi and how insane it is and how whether people want to um acknowledge the reality or not it is
swinging some of the conversation at least and who's going to wind up in the in that final 12
teams first of all what happens if ohio state loses to indiana on saturday i mean that would
be their second loss obviously this should be the scenario that every college football fan roots for
number one if you're going to win the game you're going to win the game you're going to win the game
you're not a buckeye i mean we're used to seeing them in the conversation we're annoyed with it we
want it to end right but ohio state already has that one loss a loss that at the time like you
can understand bad quarter you're going up against a loaded texas team but now texas looks funny in
the light that's a bad oklahoma team that they just lost to if and i do anticipate indiana winning
this game i think indiana is i i on your behalf i'm upset at how indiana is being covered it's
because nobody knew how good northwestern was
they got beat up in that game a little bit at nebraska i know everyone wants to make fun of
matt rule but that's as good as they've looked in those games matt rule usually falls in on his face
they look game it was 17-6 at one point that's the first time indiana's trailed in like a year
yeah and they battled back in that game and showed toughness they got two first round wide receivers
a great running back room the backup came in and he looked even he looked like clinton portis
they're good along the defensive line they're linebackers they're linebackers they're linebackers
are super smart the secondary is not as good as it was last year but that's okay the quarterback
everybody will point to that yes he's not fernando mendoza but hoover can make a lot of throws thrown
a pick yet hoover can make a lot of throws and he's been pretty clutch for them i don't understand
why this line is three and a half dave i would have this at pickham this is in bloomington i
don't think we've seen the best football from indiana it is wild to me that the line is what
it is especially when they got an active defensive line and saying it's a different quarterback when
i think you land on exactly the chance that the hoosiers have in this one by the way hoover
coming in the the book on him was he can get a little loose and and make some throws that are
a little too risque and like gino says he's clean so far this year with the ints um but specifically
and it's bizarre for anybody who's paid attention to anyone who isn't who's in the big 10 who isn't
ohio state or michigan that any other big 10 team is going to be a little loose and make some throws
would have an advantage at the line of scrimmage but that's exactly for all the signetti stuff the
advantage they have is they can rush the passer and as you say julian saying becomes different
most qbs do but he becomes way worse when you do get to him and ohio state probably does not have
the same ability to get after hoover i i don't think it's implausible that the hoosiers win this
game and if they do if they do win this one um it does create a crazy situation which is
ohio state will benefit because indiana will move up with a win and that is what you what you're
talking about with them benefiting ohio state from losing to texas the double whammy is that
even if you play a good game you ascend alabama is better today than they were last week i think
in the fbi because they play georgia i don't understand the math of this participating
against a good team it's like
um if if i hit on margot robbie and she laughs in my face do i get credit do i get credit she
digs you man like no nobody i don't get any bang out of that right literally or figuratively in the
box where it says you made her laugh i was gonna say it's an attempt in the box yeah you made her
laugh now she might have been laughing at you but you made her laugh and the right that's a good
analogy isn't it the cfb committee attempted this can't parse that i don't understand the fbi it is
a metric that they use to decide who's going to win the game and i don't understand the fbi it is a
college football playoff teams somebody please explain to me how there is a pre-season fbi
well aren't all pre-season rankings just based off of paper rosters but fbi like i think the
the gambit here is with fbi is that it's some sort of advanced metric right that takes a lot of things
that into account that play out through the course of the year i again i ask you if that's the case
right metrics how the hell is there a pre-season fbi and how was 50 of it sec yeah well exactly
i i'm stuck on my uh my good analogy there margot robbie she throws a drink in my face the fbi goes
like you stole her heart man you made her remote you made her feel but missouri and you know our
pal major randy social meat who participates on the show on occasion and is a mizzou diehard he
concedes that it's weird you know that missouri has moved up in the rankings which i would get
three weeks ago
but then they they they didn't upset florida who is a real team they exposed
Florida and then they did the same to A&M but Missouri still moves up because we decided in
July that A&M was a good team which by the way is another story altogether you know at least Texas
is in the top five on occasion what do those A&M boosters that give millions of that's the most
well-funded team in the country isn't it A&M and they never they never come close to a national
championship but Missouri beats those two teams and somehow they benefit from it even though we
all see with our eyes that those two teams aren't anything special right you just admit it you just
said it they beat two teams like the Gators were ranked in the top 10 at the time and obviously
we've seen the Gators are not what we all thought they were at the time but they still won that game
they kicked our ass Austin Simmons is a very good quarterback how's that different from what Wake
did to Louisville what I'm saying is how's it different those are two wins they moved up in
the rankings because they won two games Louisville was ranked Wake exposes Louisville Louisville falls
off the same way that Florida fell off Wake doesn't get the benefit of that
doubt they don't get the top 25 now yeah but it took like three weeks to tilt that windmill
it's ridiculous and how is LSU ranked how that's a good question well how does Tennessee move up
Arkansas sucks look at the FPI right now you can get yourself real upset at the fact that in the
FPI the power rankings are and again I my my assumption is I don't understand math or how
computers work obviously but it sure looks to me like you benefit from just participating against
good teams that they are so desperate for you to schedule good teams which by the way people can
get upset about what Indiana is doing in the future they had no ability to alter their schedule
before this year after they win the national championship say oh they're they're dodging
good teams they're cowards like that's not how the scheduling works like there wasn't an ability
to drop in a good team but it also seems to me that Oregon in part because of its brand they're
they're not going to be able to get a good team and they're not going to be able to get a good team
and UCLA Oregon that might have been a play-in game for UCLA because they're operating inside of a big
conference and like Indiana showed us two years ago you can get a convenient schedule inside that
big conference and get rewarded for it that they had to win that game they did they may very very
well be a CFP team but you watch that game you're like man I don't think any of these teams are good
but that's what an expanded CFP is going for the teams that we're talking about with an expanded 24
team field that nobody wants
that's still going to get pushed through is Northwestern Nebraska Oregon LSU these are teams
that would make the CFP or be right around that they'd be on the bubble this cannot stand Wake
Forest would also be right on the bubble they'd be they'd be locked in firmly we were we were
bouncing it around talking about it before you arrived Mike and it's the equivalent of
if the NFL were making playoff decisions based on what the thoughts were
in July right now you would be talking about like I know the record ain't great but we got to put
the Texans and Chargers in here I mean they're they're those are good teams we decided that a
couple months ago and the results to this point can't alter that that's the quality losses for
the Chargers they've they've played really good teams and some of those games have been tight
they're only going to lose more good game more quality losses to more good teams a resume if
they rattle off two in a row we're going to rank the Chargers yeah I mean that is legitimately
how it would go basically we have to do our version of wait we have to do like the college
football FPI as it applies to the NFL to divine who would be in the playoffs based on that system
or that measure I assume you have no concerns about the Canes going up against the Knowles
this weekend right I do not Mike Norvell has done well in game plans that are designed to
try to slow Miami the last couple of years there were individual moments in that game where you're
like I didn't think FSU played that poorly here like that I trusted their game plan
remember last year they did kind of put a late scare into Miami though Miami was firmly in
control of that game what I am looking for is for that to not happen anymore I don't want to Mike
Norvell to scheme his way into muddying this thing up and fall inside that number we have about a
dozen five-star recruits in the house that place is going to be insane parking has been sold out
for two weeks I want an insane Asylum that is putting on a show for its prize recruits there and
I want to end Mike
Norvell and that's what I hope happens boy that was a crazy era were you lucid as a football fan
when Florida State just could not make a kick to beat Miami because it was lucid like and often
present I was not lucid at that point yeah um are you worried about one thing you can't be
worried about is Miami going to the playoff they are as much a lock as anybody out there
this side of Notre Dame at least um I what I mean Notre Dame would have to beat him by
four touchdowns for them to be ruled out of the playoffs and even then or they could lose a dumb
one if they lose a dumb one and get smashed by Notre Dame uh then miss out on the ACC Championship
I guess they the thing is like they can lose a dumb one get blown out by Notre Dame and they'll
still have an opportunity to make the ACC and probably would be still firmly favored to do so
so I I think I saw like a a metric who knows how they do these things but the most likely CFP team
that they handicapped was Miami at 95 which is an astronomical number before Halloween yeah
um are you concerned about the individual award specifically the Heisman it feels to me at least
like it didn't happen at USC when you had Bush and Leinert um any concern though that uh Tony and
Mensah can cancel each other out when the vote goes down no no although Malachi Tony's he's been on for
it's been unfortunate he's been out of a lot of second halves he had the injury at Wake he still
caught like a touchdown with a pulled muscle on his abdomen but they've taken three touchdowns
away from Malachi Tony coincidentally they've also taken some touchdowns away from their immense if
that's the case too but he found a way to distribute the ball to to others I think it's
way too early to to consider that I think right now Jeremiah Smith is the worthy Heisman leader
the way that they're spamming him it's actually pretty telling I don't trust that running game
for Ohio State uh like
Ohio State knows exactly what they're doing getting the ball in the hands of Jeremiah Smith
he's the cheat code and I think if anybody can do it at the position he can but for me
we'll see how this college football season shapes out but I fully anticipate Notre
Dame Miami being a number one versus number two game of the century type of moment and
if that's the case then it's all there for the taking for CJ Carr Malachi Tony and Darien Mensah
yeah and by the way don't be a prisoner of the moment everybody I know it looks like Jeremiah
Smith is a lock now for the Heisman given the last few weeks and I don't I I should mention
the Buckeyes um best shot at this is I don't think the Hoosier secondary necessarily is great and if
they can get the ball in Smith's hands he'll probably wreck him and maybe ascend even higher
in the in his Heisman odds um but one bad game in a big spot can remove that shine that is on
Jeremiah Smith right now and then maybe Mentzer or Tony jumps in there um
first things last Thursday night football and it was a glorious uniform matchup that brings us to
this edition of drip drill oh two fashionistas one name Mike Ryan the other name Dave Damoshek
let's dig in on what we saw what our eyes drank in there the Seahawks throwbacks the Broncos
throwbacks your review and where do those rank among all available NFL uniform matchups the rare
home set versus home set in works because orange is essentially a lighter color the way that the
Lakers wear gold at home this visually popped the silver helmets the the blue tops those blue shells
it was it was an absolute delight the turf popping uh on Thursday night football just an incredible
uniform matchup and it sets the bar really high but Dave we got a tremendous week especially in
the pros when it comes to uniform matchups and arguably
maybe the very best that the sport has to offer yep Sunday night you know what let's Institute the
drip drill matchup of the week what would take the top spot for you on the weekend since what were
past Thursday night well look the Chargers have some options right we got we got Chargers Chiefs
which is uh one of our favorite uniform clashes that the sport has but too much too much though
with the with the powder blue yeah pants the the Chargers have been disappointing in that they miss
opportunities um to really make the clashes pop and I don't like that they schedule their mat their
uniforms like well in advance so for me the the matchup of the weekend Cowboys Packers um we we've
mentioned this before as it pertains to the Steelers or Niners while we have individual
problems with the lack of consistency of the overall aesthetic of the Dallas Cowboys they
provide a contrast to some of the game's great Legacy uniforms and we're going to see that in
full effect against the Green Bay Packers
you have to say I I like that you know which one is sort of sneaky if you
haven't considered the update to the Titans it's going to be a throwback to the old AFC
central days oilers and browns you get the browns and uh and uh wait who's wait the titans who do
the colts colts spiro didi's undoubtedly on the call to no it's a fox spiro let's see what do we
got here on cbs gotta be bills raiders pittsburgh tampa bay no no he can't possibly be he's got to
be bills raiders no bills raiders we're the jigs the jigs they're in london the jigs are in london
bobby w bobby dubs it's a little cute to do i i mean obviously i like it the home jerseys
obviously as somebody who reinstituted the ucla and usc home jerseys against one another way back
and well you're welcome um i like i like that but it's a little bit of a cheat to both do your
throwbacks and both wear
you're welcome um i like i like that but it's a little bit of a cheat to both do your throwbacks
and both wear you're welcome um i like i like that but it's a little bit of a cheat to both do your
home jerseys the best one available is the one that we just saw it's the chiefs and the raiders
it just would be better if it were on the infield in uh in oakland instead of under a dome how say
you you're the only one pining for uh some infield dirt oh i love it i like better yet if it rains
that's the only thing i was gonna say those muddy games if you watch old like photos of marino playing
bledsoe at joe robbie stadium with the infield dirt there and it caking on the white tops of the
amy dolphins his first game back from the sorry mike his first game back from the achilles he was
playing on the dirt infield at pro player stadium or whatever the old patriot like the early 90s
patriot set when they uh unveiled their new look which i know that uh dave's a big pat the patriot
guy that too bad they did all their winning with the uh the new version of that spiro on jets
patriots by the way this week oh the jets the jets the pets the pets covered that one already
but the patriots should go back to those
i mean they look so nice no i don't think so i don't think so they should because that tom brady
won all those super bowls with that that should be an era that is unique in new england history
by the way in 50 years when you open up the record book to find out about those early uh 21st century
patriots you'll look to see all their deeds and instead they'll just be a big black stain over
the whole thing because they're cheats who carried aaron hernandez and otherwise all right mike ryan
it came from my soul came from my heart mike ryan you're the tops fella thanks for the time
best wishes to the canes enjoy your football weekend fella thank you for having me on the
program um sorry that pitt lost to bill belichick and took away uh took away another ranked matchup
and possibly another ranked win which is why we are all fans of the deacons of mass destruction
but let me just tell you something very quickly it affords me and i have uh met with my with my
pittsburgh brain trust to confirm that this is the case for all of us
what it allows us is we probably would have lost to miami and handily and probably lost another one
or three along the way but now we can say yeah if heinschel didn't get hurt we would have run the
table we would have we would have been these years indiana and now we just say like the football gods
frowned on that idea because they're curmudgeons otherwise we would have been right as rain and
now i'm gonna i'm gonna celebrate a championship for the rest of my life as though it already
happened you see next week throwback uniforms for the university of miami it's the turn of the
century look
celebrating panthers yeah celebrating 25 years of the greatest college football team of all time
but that's a topic for next week's football america thank you so much for having me on the show
it's a great mike ryan everybody thanks fellow my fellow football americans i know i'm not telling

never mention 28 to 3 in atlanta
never leave a folding table unattended in buffalo and the most important rule of all
always serve jagermeister ice cold on game day zero degrees fahrenheit drinking cold or don't
drink it at all jagermeister damn that's cold drink responsibly jagermeister liquor 35 alcohol
by volume imported by masked jagermeister u.s white plains new york
all right there he goes before we wrap it up what's everybody else think about that
iu ohio state game tony how say you uh it's tough because when you when i look at the best player on
the field it's jeremiah smith and i don't know how indiana's secondary is going to match up with him
do you double him do you calvin johnson punt runner double cover him everywhere i just feel like
there's a little bit too much offensive firepower for that hookup between uh julian saying and and
jeremiah smith do i sound like a hater dave no i think that's exactly right it's funny though
because i do feel i feel bad picking against indiana smith and i don't know how indiana's
all the time though well in rudimentary terms obviously the pass rush if it's good enough can
can marginalize the mediocre to poor quality of the secondary and so i think that's what it comes
down to is can can the hoosiers pass rush get to say and and affect him and not allow him to stand
back there and deliver throws to jeremiah smith more than um a couple of times over the course of
the 60 minutes buddy yeah dave everybody keeps doing this thing where they keep doubting indiana
they did it all last season
all the way to the national championship game as they go up against as they go up against uh
different brands you know these big brands these big names ohio state miami oregon and they just
took them all out and this same thing here man this one's in bloomington i'm riding with the
hoosiers i think this is still arguably the best team in the country um they're right up there
with georgia in my opinion and i think they're going to take down ohio state because as we've
seen sig has these guys ready for these big games they're not afraid of these big games anymore
and i think they keep on rolling and get they should be the number two if they lose if they
win this game they should be the number one or number two team in the country end of story
that's it well that's interesting and it would be fascinating to see just objectively what would
happen to ohio state the rest of the season if a team that was as highly ranked as they were even
after the texas game how far they would plummet and what they would have to do to get back in i
assume run the table all right looking forward to that looking forward to all of nfl week six
we appreciate you joining us um i'm
on behalf of the fellas we'll be back on the other side of the football weekend to try and make sense
of it for you 12 30 p.m eastern we will go live right after the dan lebitard show be there and
until then thanks so much my fellow football americans it's been a thin slice of heaven

Summary:

Critics argue that the NFL has prioritized elite performers like Mevis over more viable options, and that the lack of competition and depth in kickers is a sign of declining standards.
