Clinton McDonald - Everlasting Grace is Ready to Make a Statement on Debut

Trainer Clinton McDonald joins the program to preview his weekend runners, focusing first on an unnamed two-year-old filly set to contest the Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. Purchased for $200,000 at the Easter Sales with Sue Olive's family, the filly caught the eye of McDonald, Shane McGrath, and Dave at the sale. She showed promise in Melbourne before being sent to Sydney, with Jay Mac engaged to ride. McDonald explains he moved her north partly to avoid clashing three stablemates in the Maribyrnong Trial, and the trip also provides valuable practice for a potential Golden Slipper campaign. He describes her as an understated filly who goes through her gears rather than possessing cheap speed, similar in type to Sugi and Strident. Her autumn path, including the Blue Diamond and Slipper, will be mapped out after Saturday's run. McDonald also discusses two Flemington runners: Coretto, a Derby prospect beaten three lengths by favorite Leopold, and Nicotria in the Edward Manifold Stakes, whom he rates a genuine each-way chance on the wet track en route to the Thousand Guineas and Oaks. He plans to attend Randwick to meet owner Sue Olive for the first time.

Speaker 2she was we bought her from the east of sales and sue holly for the family uh purpose there and uh she's a failure that really stood out we bought her off and uh shane mcgrath myself and and and dave saw her and fell in love with her and uh as you do you buy them and uh hope that they can be fast and uh you know we think she is and uh she's done everything right leading into the
Speaker 1race so she was fast in melbourne and then you brought her up to sydney for these trials and you got jay mac on board how did that all
Speaker 2happen well i had a couple of nice horses down here that we thought would get to the maribyrnong trial and i just thought i don't want to run three against each other so and and shane is sort of being big on me trying to get horses up to sydney for the gym crack and for the breeder saying you know it's sort of one of those races you can get up there and be successful uh yeah it helps uh your brand so we thought she's the perfect filly uh i spoke to sue olive about it and uh she was all all for it the owner and uh you know she likes an adventure she's she's a trainer and a horsewoman herself so i think it was a great idea and i said you know gives us practice for the slipper so uh we liked it and uh we're hoping that she can be good enough on saturday and then good enough to
Speaker 1beautiful well what type of filly is she is she like a big filly or is she just a neat two-year-old who'll continue to improve
Speaker 2she's very similar to my other two fillies hey sugi and strident you know she's very understated um she just goes about a business she's not she's not cheap speed um she's a filly that can sort of you know go through her gears and do everything correctly um i haven't pushed her at all obviously you know we've asked a little bit of it to travel up to sydney but we do a lot of our work at gold but all my horses get broken at gold so we've got a lot of work at alban and uh get trained pre-trained there through lucy and tim martin and uh so they've had a lot of practice up that way and um you know to her to go up there and cope uh it hasn't been a big deal for us so um we're excited by her she gives us you know she gives us the same type of the other fillies and uh we're hoping she can prove us right
Speaker 1on saturday and is it just here for a run uh or have you got a bit of petrol in the tank here for a prep in sydney the next couple of weeks yeah no
Speaker 2the thing with it is there's a fair break in between and that's the decision we'll make after the race in what direction we go with her and what's the best for her to you know obviously all we're worrying about is the autumn um that's where we want to get with her uh to a blue diamond and to a slipper so how is the best for her is what the decision will be all right

Speaker 1and your other runner in race four tomorrow in the uh i shouldn't say tomorrow but saturday in the edward manifold you've got uh is it uh nicotria going around
Speaker 2yeah that's the one yep uh she's a lovely filly this um i think she is a very good feeling i think she's sort of going towards a thousand guineas and then onto a weightful oaks um she'll love the wet track and uh i think she's a really good each way bet this filly um she's a filly that's always shown as good promise uh she beat a horse of kira mars the other day it was very unlucky uh last saturday with james james mack on um and uh i think she'll run very
Speaker 1well 23 bucks to win six dollars the place so i was going to ask you for a a bit are we backing it sounds like we're going to back this filly and we have something
Speaker 2on the two-year-old well i'd go uh two-year-old the winner needs to place and then all up you won't get too far
