You devote two months of your life to Solomon. Nothing comes out of it, like, you don't see nothing. It'll come, it'll come, I believe. Yeah, we got to be optimistic. And it's really good. Yup, so I'm here for a couple of days to rehearse, and then shoot it, you know? How different is the music video set compared to a TV or film set? I think I've done a music video before, but I don't remember where it was. I feel like it depends on who you have running it. There's some people who take too many shots, too much coverage, and you just exhaust it to a dance shot after a dance shot. And then there's some people who know how to really maximize it, and you get it done in and out. So it really just depends, but I love both, you know? Well, you haven't started filming the video I hear yet. Not yet, but we have rehearsal, and I know we have like three to four different set ups, and it'll be, it'll be no problem. It was tough, but I did it when we did it all in one day, but I don't know, I don't know how many set ups. It was like a whole, it was like, so it was a whole like day, a movie. Like I shot like a mini movie in, in, in the day, it was basically like girl next door, these two girls moving next door. MGK and Wiz are roommates, they see a move in, and they're trying to get their attention all day long. Yeah. Oh, nice, cute. Yeah, I was fun. I like more of like a cinematic than, than just like, yeah. So yeah, that, that, that'd be so cool. But so what do you see for me? What do you see for me? I would need to hear the project get that. I would need to hear the project kind of, because that's kind of where I get my inspiration from. Melissa, my darling. Please, I would, I would love to. But yeah, I'm kind of curious, like what, what do you kind of gravitate towards when you are doing music? Because obviously you act, you have an acting background. What do you gravitate towards more when like, a director is a pitching an idea or like, do you like to dance and do choreography? Do you like to do more of a, or of a film type video? I'm kind of curious about that. I like both. I like to follow where the song leads and where it takes. It's really about where the song tells you to go. A lot of, sometimes I love the narrative, you know, cinematic plots. Sometimes I love like the full boom cat pop star kind of thing. So it really just depends, you know, give it both to them, have variety. I like that. So when you started, when you started, what did you start music or did you start acting first? Acting. Acting first. And so you were in Atlanta and you and your sister what you just got like an agent when you were younger or what was kind of like the first. Yeah, we had. So like my very first audition, I went in for this role of Lily, which was younger Beyonce and fighting temptations. I got the part I just turned four when we started shooting. And it was pretty cool. I know. From there, I was three and a half. I booked it. You've been doing it. July, like top of July after I just turned four. Yeah, you've been doing it. So season after that, like Tyler Perry, things like that. So it just happened and then sister and I, we started singing, like we started at our Spelman summer camp. And from there, we just started singing around Atlanta. And boom, that's how it was. And that's how it progressed. And it's funny because a lot of people think, like, we started music first and then got into acting, like, oh, you're, they're the singers who want to act, but it was actually vice versa, which is really funny. But music is my love. You like it more than acting? I love acting. I love acting. Don't get me wrong. Especially as I'm getting older, like, I'm finding it to be very therapeutic. You know, and you have so much bottled inside, but you just kind of keep it tucked. Do certain characters, you can let it out. Exactly. And it's so freeing. It's a little scary once you let it kind of take control, your emotions. But after it, it's very therapeutic and freeing. You've got to let it. Yeah. And like with music, you have to be more put together, like more, like, boom, you know, but with acting, there's the beauty and the rawness. And like, they're looking crazy. So I love both of you. The thing about, and you could tell me if I'm wrong, this is a question for you. Like, I feel like with music, you're kind of putting your own, like, your own lyrics are like, oh, this guy fucking cheated or this, not at least with the character in acting. You can kind of hide behind someone else's lines. Do you feel like it's a little more vulnerable being, like, like, making a song as opposed to just being in a movie? That's very true and a really good point that you touched on. Yeah, because I produce and write and engineer all my stuff. So it's really just my whole spirit exposed, you know, in my most vulnerable state. But also there have been some times, you know, a couple roles where people, I can hide behind the character, but people don't know that those are things that Chloe is hiding. So it is safer to know you can just blame it on the character that is so true and have some sort of, like, a mask almost, but you still got to be vulnerable. Yeah. You got to do, like, weird shit in front of 40 people on set is like, yeah, you know, it's like it's, I don't know. I feel like it's a different type of vulnerability, but at the end of the day, like, in both fields, you got to be, like, very vulnerable. Yeah. Especially acting. What up, y'all. So, so when did you start seeing some movement, Chloe, like when, okay, you booked that thing, but like, obviously like we know people don't realize just because you're on TV or just because you're this, they think you're rich and they think you, you got fame and you have everything like, I know people who are on shows are occurring that are just still working at a restaurant. You know what I mean? So like, when did you start seeing some movement where like, hey, you were getting offered stuff, be like, you know, deals and like, I'm just kind of curious when you guys felt like you're like, okay, cool. - Oh, honey. I don't even allow myself to feel like that now. - That's great. - You know exactly what I'm talking about. - It's very humble. Very, very humble. - But it's like a lot of times people will see you in certain places or see you doing certain things and think that's like you're, I made it. But this industry is hell. - Bro, yeah, I'll tell you for free, you made it. (laughing) - Well, I mean, you know, I, when I feel like I've made it is, you know, I have different goals and aspirations I have set for myself. I definitely am very proud of myself. And I know younger Chloe would be like, she's doing it. She's doing what I always wanted to do. But I still have so many more things to goals and places to reach. But I just want to become a better version of myself every day. But it's so funny when people are like, "Oh, you made it. You're a celebrity. You're a this." But it's like, it's just another job. And I try so hard not to get caught up in that because the same people kissing your ass are the same people who will talk the most. It's about you when you're having a bad day. So you really kind of have to remind yourself what's real and what's not. And it helps so much like me telling myself, "Okay, this is my job. I'm clocking in." And then I'm clocking out. But I always ask people this. I know you've had at least a couple of these moments. Like, what is like a moment that you experienced or someone that you met? And then you're like, "Hey, I'm really here. I'm at this point of my life now. I'm really doing it." I mean, you just said you don't really feel like that. But it has to be at least one moment. I think there's been moments where it'll validate my existence and talent. I can say that. I think when I was working closely with Timberland and he was telling me how great my ear is and how wonderful my pen is and my complimenting my gift as a producer and a writer, that kind of spun me for a loop because he has such a phenomenal ear. And he has been such an inspiration to me. So to see that he recognizes and see something within my artistry, even things that have nothing to do with my external. But here, that really made me think, "I must be good at what I do." I mean, hearing that from Timberland, that's because he's one of the goats. Oh, yeah, that's, yeah, for sure. Definitely got to feel that way. Yeah, I stepped back and I said, "Wait a minute. Wait." I'm actually pretty good at this. Or if there's times where you'll hear certain songs that have been inspired by something you did or things like that and it's like, "Wait, if I wasn't good, that wouldn't have happened." Yeah, moments like that. That's a good moment. Yeah. That's a cool time. What was your first series regular, Chloe? I played jazz in Grownish for four or five years. Yeah, alongside my sister who played Sky and we were twins. Even though we're not twins in real life. Cool. It must be fun. It was fun. That's why. They wrote all the lines where we were talking over each other, but we do that in real life. Yeah, do it anyway. It was really easy. It was probably easy. That was it for the six. And yeah, it was both 100 for the same amount of time, right? Five years. Except the last season. She went off to do Little Mermaid. Okay. So I held us down during COVID. Okay, okay. That's fine. That's probably the most natural job we've ever had to do. Yeah. And we had our friends on there. It was really easy. Yeah. You shot that while at Disney? Uh-huh. Uh-huh. That's the cool thing. Like it's a go to the lot shooting on the Disney lot with your sister. How is it working with her? Do you guys fight a little bit? Like my little brother cuts our clips for this podcast. And I put his head through a wall three times a week. So I'm curious what it's like working with your sister every day. Do you have you guys had fights or is it all like awesome? Of course we have fights. I mean, I would be fake as heck to be like, oh, no. Yeah. We are peaceful. But that's the thing when you are creating. You already have to bear your soul and be vulnerable. Right. But you also have to be honest, especially when you're collaborating. Like, you have to speak up for what you want. And I think it's easy for us to do that with each other. We both communicate in different ways. I'm more like, oh, you know, Halley's more blunt is the cancer aries. But it was really funny when we were younger. Like, we make fun of this all the time. I thought I was raiding Simone and she to girls. Like, I took it seriously as doing our covers. And Halley would always laugh at me because I'd be like, no, we have to get it right. I was so freaking serious. But it's just great to see like where we have progressed. And how we are continuing to grow individually. And together in our synergy, it's really dope to witness. So what was your guys's process? Like, you'd get the script for the episode and like, um, it would come in. And then you know, you'd have to shoot these scenes the next day. Would you two like run lines with each other at night? Or would you do it solo? And then go to work the next day? Would you just go to work and do it in the makeup trailer? Like, I'm kind of be honest. I want you to be 100% honest. We would just go to work and do it in the makeup. And like, I learned my lines in the trailer. I don't know if it's my ADHD. I will go over the script and everything. My mind will not lock the lines in until that morning. Because it's like, okay, under pressure. Under pressure. There's been so many nightmares I've had where it's been me on set. And I go up. And find out all the camera crew. And then you know it though. But you know it though. Yes. It'd be like that for me too. Like, I could read, I could read a scene by myself a million times a day before. And it's just like, I don't know. Like, it never like registers in my brain. And then I go to, and I go to set, see him, we were running like two, three times. And then it's like, it's locked in. But by myself, I don't know. I don't know what's wrong with my brain. It's not us though. Everybody. Because then we'll have scenes with the greats. And we're doing rehearsal. And they're like, oh, I don't know that. What's my lines line? And I'd be like, I'm good then. I'm good then. I mean, it'd be a different process for everybody. Like for me, I don't know. I can't do the, read it a million times. Because I'll read it a million times and still remember it. But like, like I said with me and this guy, I read it three times with him. And we got it locked in. And we just built from that. Yeah. What kind of memory do you have, Chloe? Is it like visual or do you have to hear it? Ooh, a little bit of both. I'm such like a sonics girl. But then also when I think of the pictures in my head, it helps as well. And I like to, now what I like to do, I like to literally see it painted in my head. And once I do that, then everything kind of flows the lines flow, the emotions flow. Because I'm actually living through that moment in the scene. I'm kind of curious. What is it like with music? Like obviously you have 15 songs on an album that come out. Do you memorize the whole, like do you already know the lyrics? Like when you have to go perform? Have you ever forgot lyrics? Like I'm kind of curious how that works too. Oh yeah, I forget lyrics all the time. The ones that I wrote all by myself. After I record them, you know, they stay on my notes app. And I don't really revisit them again. When it's time to perform, it's like I'm teaching myself a brand new song. So when did you start? Did you start? Well, no, I just, you started singing first before producing, no? Yeah. How do you like producing? I love it. I'm such a nerd. I get to like, nerd out. And I'm, maybe it's the Virgo rising. I'm a little bit of a control free. And sometimes me explaining it to people isn't enough. You gotta do it yourself. Like this. I want the drums to hit like this. Yeah. I want the bass going too. Yeah. And my notes are very, very, very specific. I will have like 15 mix basses. Yeah. And I will specifically time mark her each note. I mean, hey, you got to do what you got to do to get what you want. I'm one of those. Producing is fun. What do you use to make your beats? Logic. Logic five. I'm a logic gal. Fire. I tried to use logic before. What do you use? I use FL and I used to, I used to use something called studio one. Mm-hmm. But I like FL the most. And I used to use reason like when I first started. But I started on reason two. Yeah. But like I felt like I was very limited on reason. Me too. And then I started using FL studio. I started doing like just like shit that I actually wanted to do. Yeah. FL studio is like, it's my baby. I got to get back on it. I was like, my thing. So after a reason, then I went on Pro Tools. And this one, they had the inbox. You know, they have the I lock. But this is when they had that big old inbox. My inbox crashed. I had like 30 projects on there. I couldn't get access to them. You lost all of them. Yeah, because the inbox crashed. And you couldn't open Pro Tools without the inbox. Like how you need the I lock to open up the stuff. Nope. I said screw you Pro Tools. I'm never using you again. I came right there. So it's like, you know, the go to DAW is Pro Tools here in the States. But the go to DAW in UK is logic. Really? Yeah. Recording, producing. For everything? Yeah. That's right. So I feel so seen. So you got it. That's fine. I did not know that. I did not know that it was like too different. I know for sure. I'm like, I love being an actor because like my dream, like, right, is to be Justin Bieber, right? It's like the most good thing. But as an actor, like you can do it for like a project for three, four months and then be like, okay, cool. I did it. So my friend, I did a movie Ma with him and Sabrina Carpenter. Yeah.
